How to live a zero waste lifestyle
—Emma Leavitt
Rebellion is here, my trashy babies! On September 20, millions of protesters across seven continents marched to demand government action on the climate crisis - yours truly included. I suppressed fat salty tears at the Philadelphia Climate Strike, and not just because I was upset about being in Pennsylvania. I was deeply moved by the school-age protesters fighting for their wretched Delaware Valley futures, which will likely involve worsening heat waves, consumption of a meat product called “scrapple,” and regular visits to New Jersey. Bless their hearts!
Flipper with David Yow (Jesus Lizard) Don’t tell me punk is dead. That’s just an excuse WHEN: for folks who don’t wanna get up and get out 10/23 7pm anymore. There’s no doubt that the contemWHERE: porary punk scene in the US and around the Middle East world is still churning out future legends in (All Ages) the making. Look no further than a band like Boston’s Ancient Filth, whose political hardcore HOW MUCH: diatribes are resurfacing this month with a slew $20-25 of shows to confront us with ever present hard truths. Still, Boston seems to be a magnet this month for legends (some would say enigmas). Late 70’s Cali punk progenitors FLIPPER return to Boston’s Middle East on 10/23 with their gladiatorial frontman David Yow in tow. Yow’s scraggly screeching has for decades provided an outlet for those taken in by his scrawls in Scratch Acid and later the Jesus Lizard. If you missed their display at Hassle Fest 7 a couple years back, now's your time to make up lost ground. Also blessing Boston this month are Melvins w/Redd Kross @Paradise, Mike Watt w/Minibeast (ex-Mission of Burma) @ Once, and Stiff Little Fingers @BMH. Boston’s underground is still kicking but sometimes you gotta take the time to revisit those who cleared the path. At the end of the day, age is just a number. —Michael Achille

For those unfamiliar, French punk outfit Avenir produce a blend of discordant, noisy, bass driven avant-rock that conjures visions of hypnotic toe tapping. You can’t help but join in. It’s beautiful and raw. Boston’s AD.UL.T reps the localz and need no introduction. If you’re unfamiliar - check it. PVD’s Towanda and Electric Blankets round out this jittery bill. A lot of times I see the word 'Blockchain' and I roll my eyes, waiting for yet another startup pitch whereby someone tells me their new "Bitcoin Uber replacing AI" will change the way we order food! (sarcasm). Blockchain really just describes a type of database technology for verifying information between lots of people when there's no central database. So take it from me that I'm actually really stoked about a new app called LBRY: a blockchain-based video and media platform! What makes LBRY different from Youtube, is that it’s ‘decentralized’ meaning anyone can upload as long as they’re the ones hosting it. Anyone who watches the video then also assists in hosting that video, so now the burden of hosting is shared between two, so on and so forth. If this sounds a lot like Torrenting, that’s because they operate quite similarly. In practice, LBRY so far appears to offer a safe platform for hosting and viewing media and the roadmap forward looks very promising. Personally, I enjoy watching @TheLinuxGamer and @minutephysics on LBRY, and as is often the case with newer platforms, there are fewer videos than Google’s Youtube. I find that I use LBRY differently from Youtube, however: LBRY feels more relaxed and as a way to keep up with subscriptions, where Youtube feels like a place to search certain videos out. I’m hopeful that more content creators will offer their videos on LBRY, conditional of course on LBRY catching on as a platform. LBRY is available on Linux, Windows, MacOS, Android, and IOS from lbry.com/get.

Viscous Verses Poem The heart, a black grape gushing hidden streams, Streams hidden as the cold farms under sidewalks, Burdened with stones, such as the tallest buildings, Bursts, pops like firecrackers, pops and bursts, When a train chuffs from the station in full flowers, —Or, smoke being the type of dream, great dreams. The heart would also go away in thunder, Admired by throngs, exploding rhetoric!

In 2001, current democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, was busy trying to pass the RAVE act, short for Reducing America’s Vulnerability to Ecstasy. The bill basically sought to drum up fear in order to continue the pointless war on drugs. The bill was passed in 2003 after it morphed into the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act. Under the law, anyone considered a “promoter” could be charged with up to 20 years of jail time and fines of $250,000, if there was found to be drugs being sold at an event they were involved with. However, the definition of a promoter was wider than the legs of a pair of JNCO’s and could include someone merely handing out fliers. His Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 was his launching point for the RAVE Act. This act differentiated the punishment between crack and cocaine, making those who possessed crack subject to far more severe sentences, which disproportionately affected people of color. He believed that eliminating the spaces where people met would eliminate the demand for drugs. He equated raves to crack houses. Clearly Joe never heard of PLUR, Peace Love Unity Respect. The bill that eventually got passed just made raves less safe and many even ceased to exist. To quote mixmag “It ended most attempts toward harm reduction education, drug testing stations, or medical services in many club and rave spaces for nearly a decade. To provide such services, would have shown an awareness and consent toward drug use.” It’s not hard to imagine this sort of bill being extended to any type of music or DIY show. Everything is political. —Zachary Fairbrother
But when it comes, escape is small, the door Creaks, the worms of fear spread veined, the furtive Fugitive, looking backward, sees his Ghost in the mirror, his shameful eyes, his mouth diseased. --Delmore Schwartz Ben Mazer is editing The Collected Poems of Delmore Schwartz for Farrar Straus & Giroux.
My Career My career lay in wait for me in the Square, or was it the other way around? Either way, we somehow managed to miss each other, never made acquaintance. Sometimes I wonder how my career is advancing out there, all alone by itself. --Philip Nikolayev A volume of Philip Nikolayev's Pushkin translations is forthcoming from Littera Press. James M.
