Welcome
to Cape Ann Plein Air 2019! The paint had barely dried on CAPA 2018 before we started planning this years’ event. Cape Ann Plein Air has grown to become the premiere outdoor painting event in New England and for very good reason. This year there is even more planned for the week of October 6–14, with exciting local involvement from businesses across Cape Ann. CAPA Week 2019 offers something for everyone as we welcome participation from Cape Ann businesses to create CAPA Week 2019! Look for promotions, specials and events on the CAPA website. Our Plein Air competition is an opportunity for 40 internationally recognized artists to paint for a week, vying for over $20,000 in awards in the four beautiful communities of Cape Ann: Essex, Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Rockport. Our area has long been a destination for painters and other artists. We view this event as an opportunity for all of Cape Ann—not only our artists, but our business and community leaders as well—to come together to raise awareness of our important art heritage. We have tremendous support from the following sponsors, whose generosity and commitment to the arts made this year a reality: Diamond Sponsor Engel and Volkers By The Sea; Platinum Sponsors Applied Materials, Brookwood Financial, Stephen & Jill Bell and Beauport Hotel and Hospitality; Gold Sponsor The Dusky Fund of ECCF; Silver Sponsors Cape Ann Savings Bank, William & Ann Kneisel/The Kneisel Foundation and Bazel General Contracting; The Rotary Clubs of Cape Ann; and our many Friends of Cape Ann Plein Air for their kind donations and support. Our artist awards are made possible by the very generous donations from local businesses and patrons of the arts. We’d also like to thank the many arts organizations and galleries for hosting events during the week, including Charles Fine Arts, Cape Ann Museum, North Shore Art Association, Rockport Art Association and Museum, Essex Shipbuilding Museum and the Historic New England properties of the Beauport Museum, Cogswell’s Grant and Coolidge Point. An important aspect of attracting competing and juried artists who travel from all over the United States and beyond is the tremendous support from Cape Ann residents who open their homes to the artists for the week, creating lifelong friendships and ensuring that our artists feel welcomed and comfortable. We want to thank our housing hosts! Because of the strong collaboration between the arts, businesses including restaurants and shops, cultural groups and galleries and residents, all of Cape Ann deserves credit for making Cape Ann Plein Air Week 2019 possible. Thank you for your enthusiasm and participation on every level. Please visit CapeAnnPleinAir.com for news about the week as well as updates on the artists. Susan Gould Coviello Project Manager

Rockport Art Association & Museum
I
n the late 18th and 19th centuries, artists began frequenting the shores of Cape Ann, mesmerized by the quality of light and the endless subject matter to be found. In 1921, a group led by Aldro T. Hibbard banded together to form an organization to celebrate and support the growing numbers of artists in and around Rockport. Thus was born the Rockport Art Association. With an active and enthusiastic membership, the group purchased the Old Tavern Building at 12 Main Street. This venerable old property included two large barns that provided gallery and function space, barns that have hosted thousands of exhibitions, demonstrations, classes and social events to this day. As years passed, the RAA assembled an extensive collection of Cape Ann art. Our permanent museum collection represents one of the best and most extensive groupings of the works of Cape Ann artists. As the organization has matured, its membership has broadened beyond “traditional” painting to include other artistic mediums. RAA&M members now include photographers, mixed media artists and the recently popular “experimental” artists.

North Shore Arts Association
orth Shore Arts Association (NSAA), a 501(c) (3) non-profit, is a community of artists, art patrons and art lovers, whose mission and goals are deeply rooted in Cape Ann’s cultural history. The peculiar luminosity of the light falling on the water and rocky shores of Cape Ann has attracted such artists as Winslow Homer, Fitz Henry Lane and Edward Hopper. In 1922 the flourishing art colony organized as the North Shore Arts Association of Gloucester and acquired an old warehouse on Pirates Lane, its current and only home, and it is one of Gloucester harbor’s most prominent landmarks. NSAA provides artists with a place to meet, display and refine their art, and to make the appreciation of fine art accessible to all. The Association hosts numerous exhibits of work by members and retrospectives of works by distinguished deceased members. These retrospectives are major curatorial efforts that bring together works from a multitude of private collections and museums, providing a significant contribution to the history of American art. 16 CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR 2019

Historic New England
n 1910, William Sumner Appleton founded the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, known today as Historic New England. For the next 37 years until his death in November 1947, Appleton continued to lead and inspire this rapidly growing organization. Appleton defined the organization’s purpose; persuaded, charmed and occasionally hectored the membership; raised money (sometimes covering deficits from his own funds); worked without remuneration; established a sound preservation methodology; and guided the organization successfully through two world wars and the Depression. Appleton’s vision evolved over the last century into a thriving heritage organization that now welcomes more than 200,000 visitors each year to historic properties in five New England states. Three properties are featured in demos during Cape Ann Plein Air week: Beauport Sleeper-McCann House in Gloucester, Cogswell’s Grant in Essex and Coolidge Point in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Mark Boedges
A
n up-and-coming artist, Mark Boedges has in a short time amassed numerous awards and shown his work in many galleries. Although art was always a part of his life, Mark came to painting in a more serious manner only during, and immediately after, college. Out of high school he attended the University of Kansas, where he received a degree in philosophy. But by then the painting bug, and in particular painting plein air, had already taken hold. He went back to school to study fine art at the University of Colorado. Preferring a more traditional
approach to painting, Mark left the program after two years to study exclusively from nature. Painting plein air had become his sole focus, and it would remain so for several years. Through this study his skills quickly developed. His first show was in 2003 and it was a great success, nearly selling out. But all artists need mentoring, and realizing that in order to further progress he needed guidance, Mark began to seek out other artists and to attend workshops to learn everything he could about his craft, which he continues to do to this day.

Mitch Baird Mesa, AZ
A
s a representational painter Mitch believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds us. He is devoted to the traditions of the late 19th century artists who looked to the figure and nature for inspiration regarding light, color and design. Seeking out this inspiration, Mitch works directly from life to capture the qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony. He has a strong conviction that great artistic communication depends on good draftsmanship, design and vision. His artistic desire is to “portray a positive visual statement and hope the viewer will experience what I see and in some sense be inspired, uplifted or moved by my painting, whether it is of a small, intimate setting or a grandiose subject. Mitch resides in the desert southwest in Mesa, Arizona. Matt Barber Kennedy Chicago, IL
“F
or almost 30 years I have been drawing and painting ageing machines, tools and buildings. I am particularly fascinated by junctions of materials and by the corrosive relationship between designed objects, patterns of use and the passage of time. My work explores the world that we have built, constructed in layers, adapted over generations, and decaying in pieces. People are conspicuously absent from my paintings, but are always present by implication. Occupants die or move on, they put up signs and go out of business. Children throw stones and touch door frames which get dirty by the handle. Tools are used, bear scars and grow weary with the years of service. Through drawing and painting I am engaged in the archeology of material culture, inspecting, exploring and celebrating physical manifestations of human history. I think of my work as a love song. “I am a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an elected member of Britain’s Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the American Impressionist Society. In 2008, I was awarded the Turner Medal in London for my work. I live and work in Chicago with my wife and family.” matbarberkennedy.com

Zufar Bikbov Oakville, CT
“A
few important events led me to paint outdoors,” recalls Zufar Bikbov. “My father was an engineer and an artist of industrial landscape. Browsing through albums of his watercolors, from his works I learned that any view can be filled with poetry. Physics class in school helped me understand the rules of perspective and reflection in the water. Luckily, in my art school, Plein Air Summer Practice was an obligatory course. Learning a full palette of landscape painting can happen only en plein air. It’s well-known that colors bring emotions to a painting. Paint with color, not just color a canvas!” In Zufar’s awards list are a number of special and top awards at national and regional plein air competitions, including Easton, Laguna, Olmsted, Texas, Cape Ann and Medal of Merit from Kent Art Association in Connecticut. His work was included to American Masters Show 2016 in Salmagundi Art Club in NYC on 5th Avenue. He believes that teaching for a professional artist is as important as a creative process. His online project, confidentartist.com, helps beginners and intermediate level artists gain confidence for going outdoors to paint en plein air, teaching painting and composition skills based on Russian rine art traditions. zufar.com 26 CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR 2019

“I
have been painting for 55 years and a professional artist for 39. Art has always been in my blood, although I did flirt with the idea of pursuing a career in law. After escaping that fate, I began to work tirelessly in my pursuit of perfecting the art of painting. In 1980, I moved to Rockport, MA and opened a gallery on Bearskin Neck that is still in operation. I participate in a dozen national plein air events every year where I have been fortunate to receive professional recognition in the form of awards, sales and, most of all, lifelong friendships. Among these recent recognitions are Life on the Farm Award, Easton Plein Air; Stobart Foundation Award, Mystic Maritime Gallery International Exhibition; Texas Ranchland Award and Best Architecture Award, En Plein Air Texas; Third Place in Quick Draw, Easton Plein Air; Third Place in Solomons Island Plein Air; Alden Bryan Gold Medal—Best of Show: “Land and Light” show at Bryan Memorial Gallery; Alden Bryan Award, Academic Artists Association National Juried Exhibition; Award of Merit, Plein Air Southwest, Texas. “S
ince I’ve only been given 100 words or so to answer the big question, “Who am I”, I’ll skip right to the interesting part, my life as a plein air painter. What matters most is not what I’ve done or where I’ve been as an artist, but more importantly how can I unlock the current scene before me, reassemble it on a two dimensional surface in a compelling way that not only is pleasing to the eye, contains elements of good painting, but goes deeper and far more personal. If my painting cannot tell you something about who I am, then I’ve failed.”

alerie Craig has drawn and painted nearly all of her life. Known for her expressive brushwork, Craig believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds us. In 1998, Craig left her career in nursing administration to pursue her passion for painting on a full-time basis. She feels that her best expressions happen when she is on location and can directly sense the mood and atmosphere of a particular scene. Whether painting vast open areas or intimate spaces, “I want my painting to resonate with an idea of a place or history. Although painting is largely an act of intuition, the way a mark is made is as important as the final image…there is a tension between abstraction and intuition, leaving the viewer a chance to react and participate.” In 2018, Valerie received the Marjorie Bradley Memorial Award, American Impressionists Society’s Annual Exhibition. In 2017, Valerie was awarded the Artists’ Choice Award in Ireland’s Art in the Open, Gold Prize in Ireland’s 2013 Art in the Open and Second Prize in Plein Air Magazine’s 2016 Annual Plein Air Salon. Gifted with some innate disposition to create, and fortunate enough to be able to practice hard and learn quickly, making art has been a part of my character since childhood. started painting as a watercolorist, primarily en plein air, in 2011, after nearly 40 years as an architectural illustrator and architect. I’ve been drawing since I was 5 or 6 years old. Architecture was my first love, and has formed the foundation of my understanding of design, composition, freehand drawing, perspective, the built, the natural environment and many other aspects of my professional growth. I became interested in plein air painting in the late ’90s when myself and 50–100 architectural illustrators would spend Saturdays at our annual conventions drawing or painting outside in some great places like San Francisco, Boston, Yellowstone and other venues. In 1997, it was time to start learning more about watercolor and painting in plein air. Since then I’ve taken workshops along the coast of Maine with Carlton Plumber; in the Florida Keys with Jeanne Dobie; in Key West and Catalina Island with Charles Reid; in Victoria, Canada with Alvaro Castagnet; and at the Madeline Island School for Art on Lake Superior with Joseph Zubukvic and Herman Pekel. I’m sure it was both the excellent artists and the locations that hooked me, but either would have convinced me this was the way to paint! So far, I have participated in some 70 plus plein air events all over the country. Professor Aso introduced Eastern aesthetics, calligraphy and sumi painting. Gary quickly graduated to watercolor and found that he could achieve much more subtlety and expressiveness through this temperamental media. “Through the media of watercolor and my process of painting, I find power through brushwork, and subtlety through transparency.” “Watercolor differs from other media in that there is a performance aspect to it. The fine pieces come out in one sitting and very often like a classic performance, something happens, a fusion of mind and subject, an improvisation that cannot be duplicated.”

I have also had several shows at Addison Gilbert Hospital, the Atrium Gallery at Musculoskeletal Center, Peabody; the Beverly Bank; Gloucester Bank; the Bookstore of Gloucester; the Pilates Center, BankGloucester; the Sawyer Free Library; the Wenniger Gallery; the Annisquam Art and Craft Show; the Lone Gull Cafe; and the Bass Rocks Golf Club. “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to paint with Phil Hobbs in Tuscany, the Lake District, U.K., Sardinia and Sicily; Jan Pollard in Sicily; Caleb Stone in Tuscany; and Lori Putnam. My studio is in Rockport, MA. My paintings can also be seen at Dental Associates of Gloucester, the Mayor’s office and the Bass Rocks Golf Club.”
