IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO VISIT EUROPE THIS YEAR! Airfares to Europe have gone sky high! So, I shouldn’t have been surprised, recently, when a friend pointed out that the cost of our November trip to Rome was almost less expensive than purchasing the airfare alone! I know that The Travel Club offers the absolute best deals in travel available anywhere, but this little bit of information caught even me off guard! I decided to test his claim and it turned out he was right! Sometimes “too good to be true” is, well, true! A Note About Theater As you know, theater ticket pricing is becoming more and more complex, with demand driving cost, and shows being announced further into the future, so we’ve decided that the best way to provide the best possible service to our members is to offer theater tickets exclusively online. Ordering is easy and confirmations are immediate. Nevertheless, if some of you are unable to order online, we always welcome your call and will take orders over the phone. Don’t overlook the enclosed insert that came with your CLUBMail! It’s a great planning tool for all of the wonderful shows en route to Boston this season. Happy travels—whether on a plane or in a theater seat! Tim Montgomery, President

what our members are saying… CLASSIC TUSCANY APRIL 2012 | “This is one of your best trips offered. Tour Manager Gabriella is excellent, professional and knowledgeable. Tours were fabulous as were meals. Love being a member of the Club.” Peggy C. AMALFI COAST APRIL 2012 | “We had been looking forward to a trip to the Amalfi Coast for several years and this tour exceeded our expectations. Paola, the Tour Manager, played a huge role in bringing the fun to this trip. She is very knowledgeable in all areas of this region and her enthusiasm and vibrant personality made sure all members of the group enjoyed the tour to the fullest.” Donna M. VENICE NOVEMBER 2011 | “I’ve become really fond of your single city deal, probably because I shop price first.” Christine M.

CHRISTMASTIME IN NEWPORT DECEMBER 2011 | “Newport is a great place to visit, but it is especially nice at Christmas. We really enjoyed the culinary tour and some of the great restaurants. Everyone at the Hotel Viking was very friendly and accommodating.” Carol P. ROME AND AMALFI NOVEMBER 2011 | “Again, a wonderful trip and an amazing value for the money. Our guides were wonderful. The staff at the Hotel San Francesco was exemplary. We particularly enjoyed the combination of the city and the countryside in one trip. Great contrast and welcome diversity. Thanks for a great trip. I recommend Show of the Month Club to everyone as all of the trips I’ve done have been great. Keep up the good work.” Jeff P.

NEW YORK WEEKEND OCTOBER 2011 | “This trip was excellent from start to finish. Our Broadway show seats were right up front and the trip down in the executive coach was the best. We loved our day to ourselves. Loved this trip!” Nancy R.

are you know someone who’s C hances accompanied The Travel Club on a holi-

day to this exclusive stretch of Italian coastline. And, when asked about the area, the adjectives start to flow: picturesque, charming, breathtaking, stunning. We guarantee they weren’t exaggerating—yet why not find out for yourself? Steeped in legend, the Amalfi Coast may have been home to the sirens of Greek mythology, calling to travelers like Homer’s Odysseus to stop and linger. Perhaps it’s the lure of the sirens that entices visitors to this coast, yet perhaps this is simply the Italy that many travelers dream about— 50 miles of pure paradise. Your stay is in Maiori, boasting the “widest and nicest beach on the coast.” You’ll be treated to a guided tour of the excavations at Pompeii followed by a winery visit, a full-day visit to the magical isle of Capri and a full-day excursion devoted solely to Sorrento (including lunch) and Amalfi. LAKE COMO and VENICE Thursday, October 4–Friday, October 12, 2012

LAKE COMO

T

his new holiday from The Travel Club combines two magical yet very different destinations. The poet Percy Shelley once said “This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty.” And it’s no surprise that Lake Como is called the beauty queen of the Italian Lakes with its sapphire-colored water backed by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. This palm-lined lake boasts an unlikely Mediterranean climate that has nurtured the spectacular gardens lining its shores. From our accommodations in the old Roman town of Como at the heart of the city directly on the waterfront, we’ll be treated to excursions to Bellagio—one of the most beautiful towns in Italy—and Lugano, Switzerland— cosmopolitan, yet with a “small town” cachet. Timeless and utterly unique, Venice is a 1,500 year-old floating fairy-tale of piazzas, palazzos and basilicas. Breathtaking art fills its museums and churches, and glorious Renaissance facades line its myriad canals. We’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of Piazza San Marco and an excursion to the lagoon islands of Murano (known for Venetian glass), Burano (known for exquisite lace) and Torcello—with its magnificent Byzantine-Italian cathedral dating back to 639 A.D. We’ll still have time to enjoy one of the most important pursuits when in Venice—exploring the thousands of small courtyards, alleyways and bridges that amplify its haunting charm.

mbria, perhaps from the Italian “ombra” or shadow, has been overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Tuscany. Yet Umbria is just as interesting and breathtaking—and often less crowded. In Spello, “the jewel of Umbria,” our hotel is a restored 18th-century building with medieval origins and is a perfect reflection of the city, offering splendid views and a traditional atmosphere. Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna boast 12th-century churches, Renaissance monuments and Roman origins, as well as the famous Sagrantino of Montefalco wine—and we’ve included a visit to Caprai Estate for a taste of the local grape as well as local specialties. Following a delicious extra-virgin olive oil tasting, you’ll visit Foligno and the 1,000-year-old Benedictine Abbey at Sassovivo. Deruta, with its traditional pottery industry dating back a thousand years, and Todi, first inhabited in 2700 B.C., are charming, old world Italian towns with much to discover in their piazzas and lanes. We’re excited to offer an excursion to vibrant Perugia with its bustling medieval center filled with monuments, cafes and chocolate makers. A highlight is the chocolate historical museum, followed by a visit to a chocolate producer and tasting. As the week winds down you’ll travel to Tuscany and one of the most famous of the old hill towns—Cortona—beautifully depicted in Under the Tuscan Sun. Cortona has it all—art, culture, Roman history, Renaissance architecture and fabulous views from its medieval walls. With rolling hills, lush chestnut groves, ancient hill towns and Roman history, Umbria is indeed the heart of Italy.

ore than 2,700 years old, Rome is a historic, artistic and cultural gem. The ancient Romans gave us the Colosseum, Forum, Circus Maximus, Pantheon, Baths of Caracalla and Catacombs. From the Renaissance came Vatican City, St. Peter’s Square and Basilica as well as a priceless array of art treasures. Countless piazzas, palazzi, fountains and churches establish Rome as one of the world’s most beautiful cities. This holiday includes touring that takes you off the beaten path. You’ll visit the Via Veneto, Porta Pinciana and Borghese Gallery. We’ve included a half-day tour that explores the most beautiful squares and fountains, including Trevi Fountain; Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) and the Barcaccia Fountain; Piazza del Pantheon; and finally, Piazza Navona and the Fountain of the Four Rivers. A new addition to this popular holiday is a chance to unravel Rome’s secrets on an Angels and Demons-inspired guided tour. You’ll visit some of the enigmatic sights mentioned in the Dan Brown novel and learn about the Illuminati and the Four Altars of Science. This holiday offers you a glimpse of Imperial Rome; Rome during the artistic explosion of the Renaissance; and the cafes, street corners and colorful lifestyle of Rome today.

f you’d love to impress your family and friends this holiday season, join us in Tuscany for hands-on cooking lessons complemented by touring and shopping for the best gifts under the tree. Ancient, elegant and charming, Lucca offers all we expect from Italy—amazing food, art and architecture, unique shopping—in an unspoiled setting, highlighted by a centuries-old wall surrounding the city. This jewel of Tuscany is still a well-kept secret and the pace of life here is quite relaxed. Hotel Universo—a 16th-century palazzo across from the Ducal Palace— welcomes us with spectacular views and traditionally decorated rooms with modern amenities. A short walk brings us to Gli Orti di via Elisa in Lucca’s historic center. This trattoria pizzeria offers a simple and traditional style of cooking and we’ll don our aprons and roll up our sleeves with proprietor Samuele. We’ll also enjoy an excursion to Pietrasanta—long considered an international center of art and sculpture; Michelangelo chose marble quarried in the mountains above the town and today, artists’ studios mingle with chic shops in the cobbled alleyways. The icing on this holiday treat is a full-day excursion to Florence with a walking tour and free time.

Our accommodations for four nights will be in the resort of Rimini at the Villa Adriatica located on the seaside promenade. The elegant Libertystyle villa—dating back to 1880—offers a pool and Jacuzzi, garden, bar and restaurant. We’ll begin in Bologna, located on the ancient Roman road Via Emilia, and visit its perfectly preserved medieval center. This handsome, red-bricked city is home to Europe’s oldest university and has a lively atmosphere. Be sure to tuck away your checkbook before our next stop at the Lamborghini Museum in nearby Sant’Agata! Our excursion to Ravenna highlights the stunning 5th–6th century Byzantine mosaics adorning the walls of its churches and monuments. A pinnacle of civilization in Europe’s Dark Ages, Ravenna now boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Leaving Italy, we’ll travel (30 minutes) to the world’s smallest sovereign state, The Republic of San Marino—24 square miles; completely surrounded by Italy; 1,700 years of history; a main square named “Liberty”; and three impressive fortresses dominating the landscape. Be sure to purchase a San Marino postage stamp and have your passport stamped—for a small fee! Departing Rimini, we’ll visit Renaissance-era Ferrara, whose historic center has earned it UNESCO status, before arriving in Padua, a star in both Roman and medieval times. We’ll marvel at the colonnaded old town, and you may wish to view (on your own) Giotto’s remarkable frescoes at the Scrovegni Chapel or the Basilica of Saint Anthony. Our charming accommodations will be in the historic center of Padua at the Albergo Verdi, close to the market squares. The icing on the cake will be stylish Venice!

OSSUARY IN KUTNA HORA

PRAGUE CASTLE

P

rague is an old and glorious city with history carved into every cobblestone of its narrow streets. In 1992 Prague’s historic center became listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register. Known as “the Mother of Cities”—the oldest, the most beautiful or the richest city—Prague is one of a few European capitals whose architecture has remained unmarred by war for the last 600 years. As a result, the preserved city center offers an uninterrupted array of buildings from thousand-year old Romanesque rotundas to ornate Art Deco mansions. Enjoy a walking tour of Prague Castle, the largest castle area in the world with three courtyards and magnificent buildings. In the old Jewish Quarter, you’ll see the remains of the former Jewish ghetto and the overturned gravestones in the second oldest cemetery in Europe. Venturing into the Czech countryside, you’ll visit Karlovy Vary, a beautiful spa town located in Western Bohemia and a scene stealer in the recent James Bond film, Casino Royale. Be sure to stroll its magnificent riverside promenade. In Kutna Hora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll visit the spectacular Gothic Cathedral of Saint Barbara dating back to 1368 and the Sedlec Ossuary or “bone church” in which the skeletal remains of up to 40,000 people have been arranged into decorative shapes. The quintessential Bohemian capital, Prague draws an international crowd of art lovers, culture enthusiasts and, of course, romantics.

adrid—often called “the most Spanish of Spain’s cities” and Marbella—whose motto is “A Way of Life”— create a wonderful combination for this March getaway. An astonishing array of museums and art galleries add to Madrid’s sophisticated style, while a vibrant nightlife and astounding variety of restaurants make Madrid the queen of living the good life. During our stay we’ll enjoy a panoramic tour and a full-day excursion to Toledo, “the city of the three cultures”—Christian, Jewish and Arabic. This spectacular World Heritage City has a mix of artistic styles where synagogues, mosques and churches nestle together in the narrow streets. A favorite destination for the rich and famous, Marbella’s miles-long coastline of sunny beaches makes it one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular resorts with a 10-mile long boardwalk teeming with coffee shops, cafes and bars. The city’s old-world charm is found in its old town. The Moorish “casco antiguo” is full of narrow white-washed streets, old churches and squares, shops, galleries, bars and bistros and at its heart is Orange Square, dating back to 1485 and full of flowers and orange trees. We’ll embark on a full-day tour including free time in Puerto Banus—a lovely marina area surrounded by trendy boutiques, cozy outdoor cafés, and lively nightclubs—and an excursion to Malaga for a tour of the old town and La Alcazaba, an 11th-century hilltop Arab fortress whose Citadel is one of the best preserved Arab structures in Andalucia, with more than 100 towers, three palaces and several gardens.

This week-long tour showcases three American cities known as musical Meccas for fans of blues, jazz and country music. Your vacation begins in New Orleans, the “Jazz Capital of the World” and home to such landmarks as St. Louis Cathedral and the bustling French Quarter— where you’ll take in a live jazz revue, learn to cook New Orleans-style and view beautiful Gothic mansions. In Memphis, you’ll dine on world-famous Beale Street, and listen as local musicians rhapsodize about Memphis’ blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll history, before donning your blue suede shoes and touring Graceland, the 14-acre estate of the King, Elvis Presley. Finally, go a little bit country as you wrap up your trip in Nashville where you’ll take in a show at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, tour historic RCA Studio B where Elvis, Dolly Parton and others recorded, and explore the Country Music Hall of Fame. Don’t miss this opportunity to surround yourself with the sweet sounds and songs of the South.
