THE LEGEND RETURNS W

here did you first see The Phantom of the Opera? Over the years, Show of the Month Club has sent thousands of theatergoers to see the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic—in New York, London, Toronto and Boston. It’s a theatrical experience that transcends time, place and circumstances. I’m thrilled to announce that the Club has already secured its block of orchestra tickets for Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production—making its U.S. premiere right here at The Boston Opera House. Flaunting a new design, new staging and new choreography—all overseen by Mackintosh and Matthew Bourne—you’ll be more captivated than ever by the power of theater. As I write this, Boston is emerging from the shock of the Boston Marathon attack and its aftermath. And while we will never forget these events, I am struck by Boston’s resilience. It’s a city very much rooted in its past, yet among the most forward-looking places in the country. Join us as we, and the world, look at Boston with fresh eyes. Plan a daytrip or come for a weekend! Go to a museum, a ballgame or walk The Freedom Trail. Wherever you go you’ll be reminded that this great experiment called America started right here and that “Boston Strong” captures the spirit of this great city. Let’s not forget theater! There are some great shows scheduled for next season—Million Dollar Quartet (October), Miss Saigon (November), Once (January), Flashdance—The Musical (March), Into the Woods (May) and many more. Check the website for all the details. The Travel Club is introducing several new programs that members have been requesting, including a fabulous Rome trip in September; new warm weather destinations early next winter; a Providence Theater Weekend featuring Ghost The Musical; and a new Ireland program this November. Want to learn more about our travel club or the shows next season? Call us. Want a complete itinerary to help decide which destination to choose? Call us. We’re here to answer your questions and, literally, point you in the right direction! Happy travels! Whether it’s in a theater seat or a 747, we have your tickets!

Tim Montgomery, President Please Note: Due to the anticipated demand for both The Phantom of the Opera and Flashdance—The Musical, early reservations are encouraged. Remember, Club pricing reflects significant savings from ‘day of’ prices.

Adapted from the blockbuster film by its Academy Awardwinning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, Ghost The Musical follows Sam and Molly, a young couple whose relationship takes a shocking turn after Sam’s untimely death. Trapped between two worlds and desperate to communicate with Molly, Sam turns to a storefront psychic (Whoopi Goldberg’s Oscar-winning role) who helps him protect Molly and avenge his death. “A highly entertaining musical that looks set to keep audiences laughing, gasping and sniffing back tears for a long time to come.”—Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph

xplore the secret side of Sicily’s northern coast where we’ll find Campofelice di Roccella and the Fiesta Hotel Garden Beach. Set in a luxuriant garden, the hotel offers a private beach, international cuisine, a wellness center and pool. We’ll visit mountaintop Erice—whose castles stand guard over the sea—and the archaeological site at Segesta— whose ancient Greek temple claims to be the “best-preserved in the world”—before an afternoon spent at the Planeta Winery on the Ulmo Estate. In this landscape—surrounded by vineyards and a wine cellar built next to the 16th-century farmhouse, we’ll enjoy a light lunch and a special tasting. Heading into the Madonie Mountains we’ll stop in the ancient hill-top village of Alimena for a picnic and a taste of fresh-made ricotta before continuing to the hills above Noto. Here we’ll discover another of Sicily’s secrets at the four-star Masseria degli Ulivi, an ancient farming estate complete with a rustic restaurant; woodbeam ceilings; terracotta floors; and outdoor pool. While the main building is classic 19thcentury architecture, the guestrooms are air conditioned with private bath and satellite TV. A full-day excursion brings us first to Siracusa—home to well-preserved Greek and Roman ruins—and the island of Ortigia, the historical heart of Siracusa with charming, narrow lanes, palaces and Baroque churches. The last leg of our discovery brings us to Taormina, perched high above blue seas and adorned with blazing red bougainvillea framing white-washed buildings.

our first journey to mysterious S ince Puglia, The Travel Club has discovered

there’s much more to explore in this southern, sun-soaked region. Join us on this vacation to “the real Italy” as we reveal the art, culture, tradition and cuisine of Puglia. Our holiday begins in beautiful Lecce—“the Rome of the South”—where art is found in its museums and amidst elegant Baroque architecture. We’ll enjoy a guided visit of this “open air exhibition” and an afternoon in the Adriatic seaside town of Otranto. We’ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Trulli of Alberobello—the world-famous picturesque cone-shaped houses, Locorotondo (reminiscent of Jerusalem) for a wine tasting, and the hilltown of Ostuni with its dazzling white-washed buildings. Enjoy the colorful streets and central piazza of Matera, the town famous for its extensive rock dwellings; Castellana Grotte, a fantastic underground “natural temple” and a visit to the Barsento winery for a tasting. Perhaps the most compelling reason to join us this November is that we’ll be treated to three intimate cooking demonstrations in the Tinelli Family’s private Trullo in Alberobello. While not “hands-on” cooking lessons, this amazing personal experience (you may get to stir the pot!) is topped off by a delicious dinner.

¿SABÍA USTED? (DID YOU KNOW?) In Barcelona, people live to eat! A typical day starts with something light, perhaps a cafe con leche with toast or biscuits. Around 11am, it’s time for a ‘real’ breakfast—a sandwich or croissant. Lunch occurs between 2 and 3pm and often consists of a starter, main course and dessert. Supper time is traditionally between 9 and 10pm yet, at times, may be even later. A piece of local advice: make the ‘wait’ between lunch and dinner easier by snacking at a tapas bar at 5:30pm and then again at 7:30pm. You can exercise when you return home!

he most popular Spanish cuisine is tapas—small sample-sized dishes that offer a variety of different and exotic tastes. Consider this tour of Spain to be the travel equivalent—a chance to experience all Spain has to offer in “bite-sized” explorations of its most popular cities. You’ll arrive in Madrid and spend two days touring the heart of España, complete with a guided tour of the Royal Palace and a sidetrip to Spain’s medieval capital, Toledo. Next, you’ll visit the Moorish city of Cordoba, and tour the Mezquita, a glorious 8th-century mosque. From there, you’ll move on to Sevilla, visit Christopher Columbus’ tomb and end your evening with an authentic flamenco dance show. Next, it’s onto Granada to tour the famous Alhambra—an immense hilltop palace—and the Generalife, an ornately laid-out series of flowering gardens, before traveling through the picturesque Spanish countryside to Valencia. You’ll visit the town’s bustling markets and stop at the old Silk Exchange building, lauded as a masterpiece of civil Gothic architecture. Your trip ends in vibrant Barcelona, where you may explore the city on your own. A bit of this, a taste of that—it’s the perfect way to experience the best of Spain!
