SPEAKEASY STAGE COMPANY

Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts 527 Tremont Street, Boston

SIGNIFICANT OTHER

From Joshua Harmon, author Playing: Sept. 10–Oct. 8, 2016 of the hit play Bad Jews, comes a sharply observed new comedy about the challenges of finding love and letting go. Jordan Berman and BFFs Kiki, Lauren, and Vanessa have been inseparable up until now; but as singles’ nights become bachelorette parties, Jordan finds himself increasingly on his own. As these once passionate friendships morph and cool, Jordan starts to worry about his own prospects, embarking on a series of romantic misadventures on a quest to find Mr. Right.

THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS

In this, their final collaboration, Playing: Oct. 22–Nov. 26, 2016 legendary songwriting team John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago) bring to light one of the most infamous events in American history: the shocking true story of nine African American boys jailed in Alabama in 1931 for a crime they did not commit. Featuring a period-specific mix of gospel, jazz, and vaudeville, this audacious musical uses the construct of a minstrel show to tell the harrowing true story that provoked a national outrage and helped launch the American Civil Rights Movement.

HAND TO GOD

Tyrone causes trouble. Tyrone Playing: Jan. 7–Feb. 4, 2017 breaks things. Tyrone wants to hurt people, which is bad news for Jason, because Tyrone is Jason's sock puppet, and he's refusing to go away. Created as a coping mechanism for a shy and introverted teen, Tyrone now battles Jason for the body that they share, and the church's after-school activities program will never be the same. Robert Askins explodes notions of morality, family and possession of all kinds in this vicious and oddly heart-warming comedy about a boy and his right hand.

GRAND CONCOURSE

Called to a life of religious service, Playing: Mar. 4–Apr. 1, 2017 Shelley now struggles to find meaning in her work as the manager of a Bronx soup kitchen. The arrival of Emma, a college dropout looking for a sense of purpose, is at first a welcome addition, but the girl’s erratic behavior soon pushes Shelley to the breaking point, in this compelling drama about the mysteries of faith, forgiveness, and compassion.

THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY

A chance meeting between an ItalianAmerican farm wife and a world weary Playing: May 6–Jun. 3, 2017 photographer leads to a soul-stirring affair in this lush, lyrical musical by the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning team of Marsha Norman ( ‘night, Mother) and Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, Parade, Songs for a New World). Winner of two Tony Awards, this sweeping saga combines thrilling intimacy with near-operatic grandeur for a heart-rending reflection on love, loss, and acceptance.

TRAVELER REVIEWS Amalfi Coast Fall 2015 All of my life I wanted to see Italy. This was a bucket list trip. Our tour guide Alessandra was wonderful and we appreciated her historical information and guidance and, best of all, her choices, such as moving the tour days around to accommodate the best weather. Overall the trip was enchanting, well run, affordable and I would highly recommend this to a friend. —Victoria T. Emerald Isle Escape Fall 2015 Our tour guide, Tony MacCarthy, was fabulous. Great sense of humor, quick wit and very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend the tour! —Jean R.

Amalfi Coast

Christmas in Newport 2015

The Breakers, Newport

I have taken many trips with The Travel Club including Africa, Italy, France and Spain. This was my first domestic destination and I was very satisfied. Club trips are a good value, well-guided and served. Guided tours are interesting and there is still time to explore on one’s own. I plan to continue to travel with The Travel Club and already signed up for next April. —Gerri K.

Amalfi Coast Fall 2015 This trip was AMAZING! Alessandra was also AMAZING and SUBERB! She went above and beyond to meet individual wishes, was a wealth of knowledge, no matter where we visited. Across from our hotel was a long beach that was a sea glass collectors' dream. The bus drivers were stellar. Driving from Maiori to Sorrento with its 1643 hairpin turns. What fabulous memories we made. Thank you! —Mary C. Christmas in Newport 2015 We enjoyed a delightful weekend in Newport! The Viking hotel was just lovely and all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Lots to see and do…the weekend just flew by. —Marie M. Classic Sicily Fall 2015 Great trip! Rosa was a wonderful tour director, very knowledgeable. This was our third Show of the Month Travel Club trip, all excellent, and we look forward to more in the future. —Mary M. Rome and Florence Combo Fall 2015 This trip was something of a bucket-list trip for me because I wanted to see a few things in each city and did not want to have to negotiate the travel logistics on my own. In this instance, I was happy to sign up for a guided tour. The primary benefit of an escorted tour is the opportunity to meet new people and to have company at meals. Companions at dinner is the only thing I miss when I'm going it alone. The fellow travelers I've met on SOMC tours provided some of the most memorable and enjoyable moments of the tours I've joined. In short, I like both solo and group experiences depending on the destination(s). Thank you for providing such memorable and rewarding travel experiences. P.S. Barbara Shaughnessy is the best. Truly... THE BEST. (... and I'm not the only one who thinks that.) —Dennis D.

NORTHERN ITALY is a gorgeous landscape of deep blue lakes, smart resort towns, ancient villages, fortified castles and lush gardens. Lake Maggiore’s charm and sophistication are the perfect setting for Baveno, a small lake-side resort flanked by cypress trees, dotted with villas and lake-side promenades brimming with café’s and bars overlooking the Borromean Islands. Vatican Museum

THE ANCIENTS WERE RIGHT! Rome is the Eternal City and its 3,000-year heritage is evident on every street of this historic and cultural gem where modern life blends with the antiquities of a lost time. Rome celebrates 2016 with its Jubilee of Mercy as declared by Pope Francis and the doors of all the city’s churches are open to the public including the Holy Door at St. Peter’s. In 2017 we’ll be in Rome for Easter Sunday. We’ve chosen accommodations at the centrally located Hotel Milani, with easy access to public transportation. We’ve included “jump-the-line” tickets for the Vatican Museum. Our independent programs are designed for you to experience Rome on your own, but we have a few suggestions. Don’t miss the Borghese Museum—the art, the gardens and the building are extravagantly beautiful. Head to the Campo dei Fiori outdoor market, buy your wine, bread, cheese and enjoy a picnic at Piazza Navona as you people watch. You’ll discover the treasures of this immense open-air museum go hand-in-hand with Rome’s more modern pleasures—legendary cuisine, cutting-edge fashion and shopping!

INCLUDES

EASTER IN ROME Banks, shops and some restaurants will be closed on Easter Sunday AND Easter Monday. Main tourist sites such as the Coliseum, Roman Forum, Galleria Borghese and other archeological sites and museums keep normal hours. The Pope leads Easter Mass inside Saint Peter’s Basilica. Those who plan to be in Rome for Easter are advised to contact the Chancery offices of their local diocese as far in advance as possible to arrange for tickets.

Rialto Bridge

YOU’VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING QUITE LIKE VENICE! This exotic lagoon city, built on a hundred islands in the Adriatic, is a watery labyrinth of sun-speckled canals and arched bridges, marble palaces, piazzas both massive and tiny, narrow streets and a glorious quay-side promenade…all in a car-free zone! The heart of Venice, Piazza San Marco, looks as perfect as a film set. The iconic Basilica, Doges Palace, Rialto Bridge and Bridge of Sighs are everything you’ve hoped for. Your first cruise (by gondola or vaporetto) down the Grand Canal—the most beautiful “street” in Venice, surrounded by opulent architecture and bustling with water-craft—is an unforgettable experience! You’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of the San Marco area and then it’s time to indulge: visit the marvelous Peggy Guggenheim Collection or Ca’Rezzonico with its 18th-century art and decadent furnishings; wander down mysterious passageways, listen to music in a floodlit square, sip a Bellini at Bar Longhi at Hotel Gritti Palace. No matter where you go, you’ll find history, beauty and romance. “An endlessly seductive charm.”—Rick Steves

RIVER CRUISING IN EUROPE is very popular, but the ships tend to be huge and the itineraries very structured. We wanted something a bit more intimate and relaxed, so we partnered with National Geographic to take you on a brand-new river cruising adventure that opens up one of the world’s greatest places via an inventive itinerary, down fabled waterways, on a small boat designed for and limited to only 22 passengers! Tailor-made for pleasure cruising, the network of rivers and centuries-old canals that crisscross Burgundy, France’s fabled wine-producing département, are simply the best way to explore central France. Life unfolds at a different pace in this pastoral part of the world, and nowhere is that more obvious than from the deck of a piloted river barge (or peniche) that doubles as your floating hotel—and there may be no better way to explore the countryside villages than floating down the Saône River. Drift from one stunning landscape to another, stopping to roam the region’s famous vineyards, ride bikes through its vast forests and indulge in its unforgettable flavors. As the capital of Burgundy’s wine country, Beaune is practically a holy site for oenophiles. Step off your canal boat and take a stroll through this amazingly well-preserved medieval city to investigate its legions of underground wine cellars, gorgeous laneways, and centuries of Roman and Gallic history. At the end of your week, you’ll head for Paris and spend two days rounding-out a unique perspective of France that you’ll treasure for a lifetime. You’re going to love this experience!
