Resolution: Travel in 2012!
“T
o my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” —Bill Bryson I always loved Bill Bryson’s observation about travel. The idea of seeing with fresh eyes is so alluring and exciting that most of us never tire of visiting new places. So, in that spirit, this issue of CLUBMail offers more “eye-opening” destinations than ever!
The reason for all this variety is you! While our trips have always placed a premium on value and economy, recently, many of our members have asked about travel experiences that require a bit more time, feature more ambitious itineraries, and offer multiple departures. That set us in motion to find a “Preferred Provider”—a travel company that could match our high standards, and arrange top-drawer trips to a wide variety of unique destinations. It turned out that such a company was right under our nose—Collette Vacations. I am pleased to announce our new Travel Club Select category—more choices, more departures and, for the most part, longer trips. (For all the details and more than 25 new destinations, see page 61!) I’ve left the best for last. Because of our new partnership, Collette Vacations is extending a special invitation to our members to join their tour of Cuba this April. Talk about seeing with “fresh eyes!” Take a look at the information at the bottom of this page. If you love to travel, then you’re holding a dream catalog in your hands. Enjoy!

Broadway’s New Romantic Musical
Three-time Grammy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Harry Connick, Jr. plays Dr. Mark Bruckner, a successful psychiatrist consumed with his work and the memory of his deceased wife—until a chance encounter with a new patient opens doors he never imagined existed. This re-imagined Burton Lane/Alan Jay Lerner musical is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), who teams with acclaimed writer Peter Parnell to bring an entrancing, new romantic twist to one of Broadway’s most beautiful scores, which includes “Come Back To Me,” “Too Late Now,” and of course, the hit title song.

are you know someone who’s C hances accompanied The Travel Club on a holiday
to this exclusive stretch of Italian coastline. And, when asked about the area, the adjectives start to flow: picturesque, charming, breathtaking, stunning. We guarantee they weren’t exaggerating—yet why not find out for yourself? Steeped in legend, the Amalfi Coast may have been home to the sirens of Greek mythology, calling to travelers like Homer’s Odysseus to stop and linger. Perhaps it’s the lure of the sirens that entices visitors to this coast, yet perhaps this is simply the Italy that many travelers dream about—50 miles of pure paradise. Your stay is in Maiori, boasting the “widest and nicest beach on the coast.” You’ll be treated to a guided tour of the excavations at Pompeii followed by a winery visit, a full-day visit to the magical isle of Capri and a full-day excursion devoted solely to Sorrento (including lunch) and Amalfi. The next day you’ll travel, via motorboat, to Positano where you’ll have the entire day to explore on your own.

For the first time, The Travel Club offers this delightful combination of Italian and Swiss charm. In Baveno, a popular resort on Lake Maggiore flanked by cypress trees, dotted with villas and beloved by Winston Churchill and Queen Victoria, you’ll enjoy accommodations directly on the lakefront in a converted 18th-century villa. During excursions to Isola Bella, quiet and secluded Lake Orta and romantic Bellagio on Lake Como, you’ll visit elegant palaces, terraced gardens and cobblestoned medieval squares while wandering along lakeside promenades. You’ll have some time to browse along the famous Via Nassa in Lugano, Switzerland, see the highlights of Milan in a half-day tour and visit Castello Masnago, a castle-cum-art museum featuring architecture from the 12th–15th centuries, amazing frescoes as well as contemporary art. his new destination for The Travel Club pairs one of our favorites—Sorrento —with one on the top of our wish list—the Borghi, Tuscany’s famed medieval villages. The “road less traveled” leads us off the beaten path to the enchanting Borghi, small Tuscan communities which are, for the most part, insulated from tourists. We’ll stay in Anghiari, rated one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Outside its 12th and 13th century fortified walls, the countryside around Anghiari seems untouched—dotted with monasteries and archaeological sites. Inside, you’ll be charmed by small squares, artisan shops, towers and churches. You’ll enjoy visits to San Sepolcro, birthplace of painter Piero della Francesca and the first pasta factory in Italy; and ancient Monterchi, a hilltown whose name means the Mount of Hercules. A visit to the Hermitage of Montecasale and the famous cathedral in Orvieto, along with stops at a textile factory, ancient oil press and a pasta factory, complete our Tuscan exploration. As the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is a lovely, relaxed resort sitting on a cliff ’s ledge above the Mediterranean. Sorrentine legends mention Greek gods, heroes and mermaids. History reveals that at least one Roman emperor made his home here while countless artists and writers have sought inspiration among its olive and lemon groves. You’ll be inspired with day trips along La Costiera Amalfitana and an excursion to the Isle of Capri.

hile many of us are more familiar with the French Riviera, lesser known yet equally exquisite is the Tuscan Riviera. This charming Travel Club holiday pairs the highlights of beautiful Tuscany with accommodations in Forte dei Marmi, an exclusive beach resort. A port for marble quarried in Carrara in Roman times, its wide sandy beach and the dramatic backdrop of the Alpi Apuane lured the Fiat tycoons in the 1920s and today it can be called the “East Hampton of Italy.” The family-owned Hotel Paradiso al Mare is just one hundred yards from the beach and has a lovely large garden with swimming pool. There are certain places not to be missed when in Tuscany and we’ve included medieval Lucca and stunning Pisa; in exclusive Portofino you’ll visit Castello Brown and delight in its gardens and breathtaking views; your day in Florence includes a walking tour and free time to explore. In Carrara you’ll vist the quarry Michelangelo favored for his marble and see artists’ studios in Pietrasanta.

Lake Como and Venice Thursday, October 4–Friday, October 12, 2012
Lake Como
T
his new holiday from The Travel Club combines two magical yet very different destinations from the top of our travel “short list.” Percy Shelley said “This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty.” And it’s no surprise that Lake Como is called the beauty queen of the Italian Lakes with its sapphire-colored water backed by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. This palm-lined lake boasts an unlikely Mediterranean climate that has nurtured the spectacular gardens lining its shores. From our accommodations in the old Roman town of Como at the heart of the city directly on the waterfront, we’ll be treated to excursions to Bellagio—often named the most beautiful town in Italy—and Lugano, Switzerland— cosmopolitan, yet with the cachet of a small town. Truman Capote said “Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go.” Timeless and utterly unique, Venice is a 1,500 year-old fairy-tale floating city of piazzas, palazzos and basilicas. Breathtaking art fills its museums and churches, and glorious Renaissance facades line its myriad canals. We’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of Piazza San Marco and an excursion to the lagoon islands of Murano (known for Venetian glass), Burano (known for exquisite lace) and Torcello—with its magnificent ByzantineItalian cathedral dating back to 639 A.D. We’ll still have time to enjoy one of the most important pursuits when in Venice—exploring the thousands of small courtyards, alleyways and bridges that amplify its haunting charm.

mbria, perhaps from the Italian “ombra” or shadow, has been overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Tuscany. Yet Umbria is just as interesting and breathtaking—and often less crowded. In Spello, “the jewel of Umbria,” our hotel is a restored 18th-century building with medieval origins and is a perfect reflection of the city, offering splendid views and a traditional atmosphere. Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna boast 12th-century churches, Renaissance monuments and Roman origins, as well as the famous Sagrantino of Montefalco wine—and we’ve included a visit to Caprai Estate for a taste of the local grape as well as local specialties. Following a delicious extra-virgin olive oil tasting, you’ll visit Foligno and the 1,000-yearold Benedictine Abbey at Sassovivo. Deruta, with its traditional pottery industry dating back a thousand years, and Todi, first inhabited in 2700 B.C., are charming, old world Italian towns with much to discover in their piazzas and lanes. We’re excited to offer an excursion to vibrant Perugia with its bustling medieval center filled with monuments, cafes and chocolate makers. A highlight is the chocolate historical museum, followed by a visit to a chocolate producer and tasting. As the week winds down you’ll travel to Tuscany and one of the most famous of the old hill towns—Cortona—beautifully depicted in Under the Tuscan Sun. Cortona has it all—art, culture, Roman history, Renaissance architecture and fabulous views from its medieval walls. With rolling hills, lush chestnut groves, ancient hill towns and Roman history, Umbria is indeed the heart of Italy.

ying only 80 miles from the North African coast, Sicily has survived countless invaders—Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and many more—all attracted to its beauty, fertility and magic. Quintessentially Italian yet uniquely Sicilian, the region’s mountains, beaches and vineyards have attracted poets, painters and lovers of beauty. This fall we’ll explore Sicily from the storied streets of Palermo to the most famous of all Italian resort towns—Taormina—before ending our holiday with two nights in la bella Roma.

asilicata and Calabria are two of the most interesting, unusual and memorable regions in Italy. Seldom-visited by American travelers, these southern beauties offer mountainous terrain, picturesque towns, warm people and, no surprise, terrific food! Your stay begins in Matera, the town famous for its extensive cave-dwellings, the sassi. (Matera was one of the locations for Mel Gibson’s film The Passion of the Christ.) In 1993, Matera was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for being “the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region.” After three days exploring Basilicata, you’re off to dreamy Amantea, a seaside gem in ancient Calabria. Each day features visits to nearby towns, including a guided tour of medieval Fiumefreddo Bruzio, one of the most beautiful towns in all of Italy. This whirlwind adventure ends with two nights in Reggio Calabria, home to the famous “Bronzi di Riaci” (the Greek bronzes cast in 460–430 BCE currently housed by the Museum Nazionale della Magna Grecia) and includes a stop in chic Tropea.

f you’d love to impress your family and friends this holiday season, join us in Tuscany for hands-on cooking lessons complemented by touring and free time to shop for the best gifts under the tree. Stunning, elegant, ancient and charming, Lucca offers all we expect from Italy—amazing food, art and architecture, unique shopping—in an unspoiled setting, highlighted by a centuries-old wall surrounding the city, that is perfect for strolling. This colorful jewel of Tuscany is still a well-kept secret and the pace of life here is relaxed. Hotel Universo—a 16th-century palazzo across from the Ducal Palace—welcomes us with spectacular views and traditionally decorated rooms with modern amenities. A short walk brings us to Gli Orti di Via Elisa in Lucca’s historic center. This trattoria pizzeria offers a simple, genuine and traditional style of cooking. We’ll don our aprons and roll up our sleeves with proprietor Samuele—followed by lunch! We’ll also enjoy an excursion to Pietrasanta—long considered an international center of art and sculpture; Michelangelo chose marble quarried in the mountains above the town and today, artists’ studios mingle with chic shops in the cobbled alleyways radiating from the central piazza. The icing on this holiday treat is a full-day excursion to Florence with a walking tour and free time.

YOUR WEEK in PARIS

W
hether it’s your first trip to Paris or your twenty-first, this Travel Club classic remains one of the best values in travel today! For this getaway we’ve chosen accommodations in Paris’ eclectic 9th arrondissement on the Right Bank, a stately area well-known for its BelleEpoque department stores and elegant shopping galleries. Called the Grands Boulevards shopping area, this affluent neighborhood located near the Palais Garnier Opera House (in fact, the 9th arrondissement is often called Opéra) is the perfect spot for strolling and window-shopping some of the best boutiques and department stores in Paris. Galeries-Lafayette and Printemps—two of Paris’s largest department stores—also offer fantastic views of Paris from their roof-top terraces. Nearby are numerous Metro stops, the Place Vendome and Place de la Madeleine while the champs-Elysees, Louvre Tuileries Gardens and Rue de Rivoli are about a fifteen minutes’ walk. The area surrounding the hotel is also full of restaurants, shops and bakeries. Although you probably know exactly what you want to see and do, here’s some of our suggestions: The Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, Musée d’Orsay, The Sorbonne and the Latin Quarter, Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysées, Sacre Coeur and Montmartre, Père Lachaise Cemetery and a boat tour on the Seine River.

“I
t’s official: Croatia is hot,” says Rick Steves. Voted Top Destination in the World in 2005 by Lonely Planet and in 2006 by National Geographic Adventure, Croatia is one of Europe’s hidden jewels with five thousand years of history, 1,100 miles of stunning Adriatic Sea coastline and mouth-watering seafood. Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is a walled, medieval city whose romantic Old Town is a traffic-free jumble of cobbled lanes. In bustling, vibrant Split, the abandoned palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, built in 300 A.D., gave the city its medieval beginning and Split’s old-town square stands where the palace courtyard once stood. Narrow alleys offer both fashionable boutiques and galleries. Plitvice Lakes, one of Europe’s most beautiful national parks, was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Sixteen terraced lakes—separated by natural limestone dams and connected by countless waterfalls—are set in a lush mountainous forest. Neighboring Slovenia (along with Croatia) is known as one of Europe’s most pleasant destinations. Capital city Ljubljana boasts a Baroque Old Town, Art Nouveau mansions and cliffside castles. 52

Consider this tour of Spain to be the travel equivalent—a chance to experience all Spain has to offer in “bite-sized” explorations of its most popular cities. On to Granada to tour the famous Alhambra—an immense hilltop palace—and the Generalife, an ornately laid-out series of flowering gardens, before traveling through the picturesque Spanish countryside to Valencia.
