WINTER WINTER 2014

THEATRICAL GEMS AND THIS YEAR’S HOT DESTINATIONS! T
he Boston area is blessed with an astonishing number of first-rate, award-winning theater companies. So, here’s a tip: while this year’s theatrical buzz will include The Phantom of the Opera and The Book of Mormon, don’t overlook some absolute gems like ARTSEmerson’s presentation of Mikhail Baryshnikov in Man in a Case; North Shore Music Theatre’s season-opener, Anything Goes; and SpeakEasy’s production of the cult-favorite Carrie—The Musical. I also recommend the long-awaited new production from the producers of Riverdance, Heartbeat of Home, coming to The Wang Theatre in March. All in all, this will be a terrific year for theater—and, as always, we have the tickets! If theater looks enticing, wait until you see what we’ve planned in travel! How about a Mediterranean cruise starting in Venice and ending with a three-night stay in red-hot Dubrovnik. Or make this your year to visit Rome and join the throngs celebrating our charismatic new Pope Francis, as well as the canonization of two past popes. Then there’s a trip that I researched and planned personally—The Veneto—one of the most beautiful regions of Italy. Speaking of being blessed (see above!), for the first time, we’re offering a spiritual journey to some of the holiest shrines in France. Within the following pages, you’ll find 65 ways to see the world! And, what they all have in common is our personal service, our careful planning and incredible value. It’s your Club—take advantage! And enjoy. TIM MONTGOMERY, PRESIDENT

national parks—our great natural treasures. Each day we’ll experience a new destination, new landscape and new adventure. View the fascinating 800-year-old cliff dwellings lining the canyon walls of Colorado’s Mesa Verde National Park. t may be hundreds of miles from the Pacific Ocean, yet the Spirit of the West lives in South Dakota. This weeklong getaway is a wonderful chance to escape the bustle of modern life and reconnect with our country’s rich history. We’ll witness 2.5 billion years of geological history in a single day via the steep canyons, spires and buttes created by the stark, beautiful environment at Badlands National Park and the 865-foot Devil’s Tower Monument (made famous in Close Encounters of the Third Kind). Of course, excursions to the man-made rock formations of Mount Rushmore and the still-in-progress Crazy Horse Memorial are equally breathtaking. That said, South Dakota is more than just big rocks; we’ll spend three exciting nights in the gold rush town of Deadwood, former residence of true American originals Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. At the Hampton Inn, however, with its 24-hour casino and indoor pool, you won’t be roughing it like they did. The Old West lives on…

THE FLAVORS OF ITALY Emilia Romagna
Saturday, May 3–Sunday, May 11, 2014
T
here are a thousand reasons why we love Italy, but, let’s face it, food is near the top of the list. If you ask an Italian where the best food comes from, he or she will say “from mamma!” If pushed, many will admit, “Of course, there is also Emilia-Romagna.” So, we’re off to Italy’s culinary heart to sample this legendary cuisine and to explore its gemlike cities. The Parmese (from Parma) have a saying: “you eat twice: first at the table, then by talking about it.” We’re sure to do just that during this week-long “feast” that includes two sumptuous lunches—including wine!—at agriturismos (family-run, working farms) where we’ll enjoy the local products and dine on regional specialties. Good food, good atmosphere, good company! Our exploration starts with Parma—cobblestone streets, great shopping, a wonderful choice of restaurants and the stunning Teatro Farnese, one of the most breathtaking sites in all Parma, built entirely out of wood and plaster and painted to resemble expensive marble. Parma’s culinary hits include its Prosciutto di Parma, porcini mushrooms, handmade pasta a n d Parmigiano Reggiano. Next is elegant Bologna—a sophisticated city of porticoes and piazzas and the best food markets. How seriously does Bologna take its food? The chamber of commerce preserves centuries-old recipes to continue the tradition of the best mortadella, tortellini and, of course, Bolognese sauce. Ravenna, famous for its stunning mosaics, has its own food traditions—try piadina—a flatbread made with flour, salt, water and olive oil—Sangiovese (the local wine) and stuffed egg pastas. There are those who argue that Ferrara is the perfect Italian city—as fabulous as Florence—with hidden treasures like the enchanting, moat-encircled castle and delicious dishes like “Cappellacci di Zucca” (a type of ravioli stuffed with pumpkin) and Pasticcio Alla Ferrarese (a delicious meat pie). Lovely cities, food-glorious-food, and a few castles thrown in for good measure!

milia Romagna is a kaleidoscope of wonders from the shores of the Adriatic Riviera to the castles of the countryside. Our accommodations for four nights will be in the resort of Rimini at the Villa Adriatica located on the seaside promenade. The elegant Liberty-style villa—dating back to 1880—offers a pool and Jacuzzi, garden, bar and restaurant. We’ll begin in Bologna, located on the ancient Roman road Via Emilia, and visit its perfectly preserved medieval center during a morning tour and an afternoon on our own. This handsome, redbricked city is home to Europe’s oldest university and has a lively atmosphere. Our excursion to Ravenna highlights the stunning 5th–6th century Byzantine mosaics adorning the walls of its churches and monuments. A pinnacle of civilization in Europe’s Dark Ages, Ravenna now boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Leaving Italy, we’ll travel (30 minutes) to the world’s smallest sovereign state, The Republic of San Marino—24 square miles completely surrounded by Italy; boasting 1,700 years of history; its main square named “Liberty”; and three impressive fortresses dominating the landscape. Be sure to purchase a San Marino postage stamp and have your passport stamped—for a small fee! Departing Rimini, we’ll visit Renaissance-era Ferrara, whose historic center has earned it UNESCO status, before arriving in Padua, a star in both Roman and medieval times. We’ll marvel at the colonnaded old town, and you may wish to view (on your own) Giotto’s remarkable frescoes at the Scrovegni Chapel or the Basilica of Saint Anthony. Our charming accommodations for three nights will be in the historic center of Padua at the Albergo Verdi, close to the market squares. The icing on the cake will be a day in Venice!

The next day is a full day exploration into the majestic Dolomites, a landscape of towering mountains and impossibly tall spires of rock that soar above the green valleys below. Your week also includes visits to Bassano del Grappa, lunch in a castle ruin high above perfect, little Marostica and a visit to Castello di Thiene, the most significant gothic castle in the region. his week-long holiday begins with four days exploring the Borghi, Tuscany’s famed medieval villages, before heading to the coastal resort of Sorrento—the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. The “road less traveled” leads us off the beaten path to these small Tuscan communities which are, for the most part, insulated from tourists. We’ll stay in Anghiari, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Outside its 12th and 13th century fortified walls, the countryside seems untouched by modernity. Inside, you’ll be charmed by small squares, artisan shops, towers and churches. Enjoy visits to San Sepolcro and ancient Monterchi (the Mount of Hercules), the Hermitage of Montecasale and the famous cathedral in Orvieto. Stops at a textile factory and an ancient oil press and pasta factory complete our Tuscan exploration. is dramatic—in every sense of the S icily word. Lying only 80 miles from the coast
of North Africa, Sicily has seen invaders— Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and many more—all attracted to its beauty, fertility and magic. That doesn’t sound all that dramatic, you say? Try this: Sicily is both blessed by the spectacular, turquoise Mediterranean Sea and cursed by volcanoes and earthquakes. Not enough? Quintessentially Italian yet uniquely Sicilian, the island has seen plagues, family vendettas, poverty and prosperity. It has always attracted poets, painters and lovers of beauty. It has mountains and beaches and vineyards; its cities and towns are both ancient and modern. In short—it’s dramatic! Join us this October as we explore Sicily from the storied streets of Palermo to the most famous of all Italian resort towns—Taormina. In between, we’ll visit Marsala and sip wine; spend a day marveling at the Greek temples in Agrigento; wander the streets of Catania; and, finally, discover the charms of Taormina, to this day, a hot spot for the rich and famous. We’ll be treated to an excursion to Mount Etna and have plenty of time to explore on our own. Now that’s dramatic!

he ancients were right! Rome is the Eternal City and its 3,000-year heritage is evident on every street of this historic and cultural gem where modern life blends with the antiquities of a lost time. The Pantheon— an architectural wonder of the world—and the awe-inspiring ruins of the Colosseum testify to Rome’s bold Imperial history. The jewels of the Renaissance—St. Peter’s Square and Basilica and a priceless array of treasures— illustrate the artistic awakening begun in the 14th century. Countless piazzas adorned with flowers, majestic palazzo and bubbling fountains whisper the secrets of “la dolce vita.” Our independent programs are designed for you to experience Rome on your own yet we have a few suggestions. Don’t miss the Borghese Museum—the art, the gardens and the building are extravagantly beautiful. Head to the Campo dei Fiori outdoor market at Piazza Navona—buy your wine, bread, cheese and enjoy a picnic as you people watch. Purchase “jump-the-line” tickets for the Vatican Museum and mail your postcards from inside Vatican City for the unique stamps and postmark. If you travel in April you may want to check out the Leonardo da Vinci Machines Exhibit. In June you’ll be able to visit the Rose Garden, near Circus Maximus, for a spectacular display. The treasures of this immense open-air museum go hand-in-hand with Rome’s more tangible pleasures—legendary cuisine, cutting-edge fashion and shopping!

The New York Times recently named Rome one of the top destinations of 2014! Why? As if there weren’t enough reasons to love Rome, Pope Francis, with nearly 3.5 million followers on Twitter, was named the 2013 Person of the Year by TIME Magazine. The Vatican anticipates record attendance during Holy Week, and over a million visitors are expected for the canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II on April 27. (Services commemorating the new saints will happen all year long.) In addition, the restoration of Bernini’s colonnade in St. Peter’s Square will be unveiled and The Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis (a vast ancient Roman cemetery) reopens to the public.

S
ince our first journey to “off-the-beatenpath” Puglia, The Travel Club has discovered there’s so much to explore in this southern, sun-soaked region. Our holiday begins in beautiful Lecce—“the Rome of the South”—where art is found both in museums and in elegant Baroque architecture—and where we’ll enjoy a guided visit of this “open air exhibition.” Spend a day at the seaside in charming Otranto—with its imposing castle, sea-front promenades and Romanesque cathedral—and Gallipoli (“beautiful city”) whose old town center sits on a tiny island connected to the mainland by a 17th century bridge! We’ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Trulli of Alberobello—the worldfamous picturesque cone-shaped houses—and delight in the winding alleys, graceful baroque and rococo palaces, airy piazzas and iron-work balconies in Martina Franca. A full-day excursion starts in the hilltown of Ostuni, called “La Città Bianca” for its blinding white buildings. Don’t miss the 360º panorama of the surrounding countryside and the Adriatic Sea. From here we’ll visit the Barsento Winery—whose cellars are dug into the limestone rock—for a wine tasting accompanied by local dishes, before a visit to Locorotondo, one of Puglia’s prettiest towns. Enjoy the colorful streets and central piazza of Matera, the town famous for its extensive rock dwellings and leading role in a number of films, including The Passion of the Christ. Explore the unique character and charm of this “mostly undiscovered” slice of Italian heaven!

¿SABÍA USTED? (DID YOU KNOW?) In Barcelona, people live to eat! A typical day starts with something light, perhaps a cafe con leche with toast or biscuits. Around 11am, it’s time for a ‘real’ breakfast—a sandwich or croissant. Lunch occurs between 2 and 3pm and often consists of a starter, main course and dessert. Supper time is traditionally between 9 and 10pm yet, at times, may be even later. A piece of local advice: make the ‘wait’ between lunch and dinner easier by snacking at a tapas bar at 5:30pm and then again at 7:30pm. You can exercise when you return home!

hroughout history, pilgrims have journeyed to sacred places searching for solace, healing and enlightenment. On this, The Club’s first “spiritual journey,” we’ll follow in their footsteps. Our week begins in Lourdes, the most-visited shrine in France, where, in 1858, The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette and spoke “I am the Immaculate Conception.” We’ll celebrate Mass, take a special walking tour, and visit the baths plus participate in the Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, the Blessing of the Sick and the Torchlight Procession. The next day, we’re free to visit the sacred Grotto. Then we’re off to Paris! Our visit begins with Mass at the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal where, in 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure. We may view her incorrupt body later in the day. A Paris sightseeing tour is included. Next day, we’ll visit the exquisite Palace at Versailles, as well as the magnificent 13th-century cathedral in Chartres. In Lisieux, we’ll tour the home of St. Therese, visit the Basilica built in her honor, and see the ancient Cathedral of St. Peter. Our journey concludes through the picturesque Loire Valley to Nevers. At the Convent of St. Gildard we’ll see St. Bernadette’s incorrupt body in repose, preserved since her death in 1879 in a crystal coffin. We have included the opportunity to participate in Holy Mass daily. 46

Once a warren of artists’ studios and swinging cafés, this neighborhood takes you back to the café society of the early 20th century and is perfect for strolling, dining, and shopping in the Galeries Lafayette Montparnasse.

ruth be told, aside from that little skirmish back in 1775, we Yanks have a genuine affinity for the British. Particularly when it comes to visiting our older relative across the pond. London’s must-see, life-sized postcard stops Big Ben, Tower of London, Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace make a great primer before traveling to scholarly Cambridge and medieval York. Stroll the famous “Shambles” for a faithful picture of the Middle Ages. Visit the amazing fortification of Hadrian’s Wall (built by the Romans in AD 122) before crossing the Border Region into Scotland. Although defiantly not ‘British,’ Edinburgh offers a look back at life centuries past. Wind through England’s picturesque Lake District and spend the evening in the north of Wales with a traditional Welsh dinner and entertainment. Add in Stratford-Upon-Avon (Shakespeare’s birthplace), the Cotswolds (the most beautiful countryside), and Stonehenge (mystical and fascinating) and you’ve got a ‘right proper’ picture of the lovely landscapes of Britain.

70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings Normandy and Paris Thursday, October 23–Saturday, November 1, 2014
J
une 6, 2014 marks the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, the World War II Allied campaign in Normandy that turned the tide of war, leading to eventual Allied victory. Today those 50 miles of Atlantic coastline are home to WWII museums, monuments, cemeteries and battle remains left in tribute to the armies that successfully carried out the largest military operation in history. Here, the soldiers are honored and to see where this act of courage took place is, for many, a dream fulfilled. This new tour commemorates the events that changed our world. We’ll begin in Paris and experience a tour that highlights life in the city during the German occupation through the Liberation. During our four days in Normandy we’ll visit the Memorial Peace Museum and the headquarters of Field Marshall Rommel. Tours of the Landing Beaches brings us to Sword, Juno, Gold, Utah and Omaha Beach, a stop at Pegasus Bridge, the remains of Mulberry Harbour, the Airborne Museum, Pointe du Hoc Ranger Memorial, Omaha Memorial Museum and the U.S. Military Cemetery. Our tour steps back even farther into history with a visit to the astonishing Bayeux Tapestry depicting the conquest of England by William of Normandy in 1066 and the 11th century abbey at Le Mont Saint Michel. This immense abbey—a wonder of the Western World—and the village surrounding it are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. En route to Paris at the conclusion of our holiday we’ll stop in medieval Chartres for a guided visit of the Cathedral—nearly perfectly preserved and a sacred pilgrimage site.

ou know that long list of places you dream of visiting? This holiday includes three of them: Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Start in fairytale Prague—the “city of a thousand spires”— with countless castles and museums as well as beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral and the statuelined Charles Bridge. While you may not want to leave Prague, our next stop may be even more dazzling—sophisticated Vienna—one of the world’s great cultural treasures, called “Europe’s classiest capital,” by Rick Steves, one of America’s leading travel authorities. Enjoy visits to Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephan’s Cathedral and perhaps treat yourself to an optional classical music concert. Then it’s off to Budapest, the “Queen of the Danube,” where you’ll be drawn to the city’s beautiful architecture and magnificent river views. Tour highlights include Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion and a visit to Visegrad (for a magnificent view of the Danube Bend) and the Borzsony Mountains. Relive Renaissance history with a visit to a 14th-century castle where costumed knights recreate the days of chivalry followed by a dinner at the castle restaurant. Three cities, three countries—hundreds of new memories.
