THE ULTIMATE FAMILY VACATION 2018 promises to set a record for world-wide leisure travel, driven in part by the continuing popularity of European river cruises, the growing appeal of solo traveling, and now the demand for multi-generational vacations. These are vacations where the kids can enjoy supervised, kid-only activities while mom and dad luxuriate at the spa, grandpa plays golf and Aunt Sally and grandma go shopping. Later, at dinner under the stars, everyone can share their adventures and make plans to do it again tomorrow! It’s Paradise! But where is this paradise? Club Med. Yes, Club Med, still one of the world’s leading resort companies. Of course, Club Med is ideal for singles and couples too, but we loved their concept of family trips so much that we entered into an agreement to offer our members several of their best Caribbean, Mexican and Bahamas properties plus their famous Sandpiper Bay resort in Florida. Here’s the best part: These world-class destinations are all-inclusive. That means hotel, taxes and gratuities, meals (the food is legendary), snacks and open bar, activities and entertainment, are all included! It’s everything you need for a vacation that brings families together for the experience of a lifetime! You’ll find the details in our special 10-page section in this issue of CLUBMail. Don’t wait, just pick your dates and we’ll do the rest. Happy travels in the New Year! Tim Montgomery President

THE HUMANS Playing: March 13–25, 2018 Order by: February 10, 2018 Stephen Karam’s The Humans is an uproarious, hopeful, and heartbreaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter’s apartment in Lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan’s deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare. Our modern age of anxiety is keenly observed, with humor and compassion, in this new American classic that won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play.

SPEAKEASY STAGE COMPANY

Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts 527 Tremont Street, Boston

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Playing: Jan. 12–Feb. 10, 2018 Based on the Academy Award-winning film, Shakespeare In Love tells the story of young Will Shakespeare, who is suffering a severe case of writer’s block as the deadline fast approaches to deliver his new play, Romeo and Ethel, The Pirate’s Daughter. Enter Viola, a headstrong noblewoman and admirer of Will’s, who disguises herself as a boy so she can skirt the law and appear (as a girl) in his play. But when the playwright and his muse fall in love, the plot undergoes some surprising rewrites. Mistaken identities, courtly intrigue, and backstage bickering are all part of the fun in this raucous romantic comedy of errors that reminds us that all the world’s a stage and love is unrehearsed.

EVERY BRILLIANT THING Playing: Mar. 2–31, 2018 1. Ice cream 2. Water fights 3. Staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV. These are just a few items on a list of things worth living for compiled by a young girl trying to ease her mother’s depression at the start of the charming and miraculous new play Every Brilliant Thing. Through adulthood, as the list grows, she learns the deep significance the list has on her own life, as she goes to college, falls in love, and builds a home. A tribute to the irrepressible resilience inside all of us and the capacity to find delight in the everyday, Every Brilliant Thing is a very funny and moving new play that enlists members of the audience to help tell its story.

ALLEGIANCE Playing: May 4–Jun. 2, 2018 Inspired by the true childhood experience of TV/film actor and social media icon George Takei (Mr. Sulu on “Star Trek”), Allegiance tells the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended when they and 120,000 other Japanese-Americans are forced to leave their homes following the events at Pearl Harbor. Sam Kimura seeks to prove his patriotism by fighting for his country in the war, but sister Kei fiercely protests the government’s treatment of her people. An uplifting testament to the power of the human spirit, Allegiance follows the Kimuras as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves. SpeakEasy Stage is proud to breathe new life into Allegiance by presenting the East Coast regional premiere of an intimate version of this important musical.

We’ll witness 2.5 billion years of geological history in a single day via the steep canyons, spires and buttes created by the stark, beautiful environment of the Badlands and the 865 foot Devils Tower Monument (made famous in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”). Excursions to the man-made rock formations of Mount Rushmore and the still-inprogress Crazy Horse Memorial are equally breathtaking. Spend three exciting nights in the gold rush town of Deadwood, former residence of true American originals Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. The Amalfi Coast is beautiful, romantic and dramatic and the Club has become justly famous for our tour of the best of the best. Home-base is a charming hotel in Maiori with its long, wide beach. From there we’ll set out on a new adventure each day—a guided tour of the excavations at Pompeii followed by a winery visit; a full-day visit to the magical and glamorous isle of Capri; an excursion to Sorrento where we'll have a pizza-making lesson followed by lunch and a limoncello tasting, an exploration of Amalfi and Ravello with lunch. The next day we'll travel by motorboat to the village that seems to tumble into the blue sea—Positano—where we'll enjoy lunch and have the whole day to explore on our own.

Trevi Fountain, Rome

THE ANCIENTS WERE RIGHT! Rome is the Eternal City and its 3,000-year heritage is evident on every street of this historic and cultural gem where modern life blends with the antiquities of a lost time. Join us for a week in Rome and enjoy three days of touring and three days to explore on our own from our centrally located Hotel Medici accommodations. Explore St. Peter's Square and Basilica with “jump-the-line” tickets for the Vatican Museum, followed by a panoramic coach tour. Enjoy excursions to hilltop Tivoli—including guided tours of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Villa Adriana, the sprawling estate of Emperor Hadrian, and the 16th-century Villa d'Este, a Renaissance villa famous for its landscaped gardens and lavish fountains—and the Castelli Romani wine district where we'll visit the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo—the beloved summer residence of many Popes. Both excursions include lunch with wine. As you explore Rome on your own, we have a few suggestions: Don't miss the Borghese Museum—the art, the gardens and the building are extravagantly beautiful. Head to the Campo dei Fiori outdoor market, buy your wine, bread, cheese and enjoy a picnic at Piazza Navona as you people watch. You'll discover the treasures of this immense open-air museum go hand-in-hand with Rome's more modern pleasures—legendary cuisine, cutting-edge fashion and shopping!

TRIPADVISOR HOTEL REVIEW

Hotel Medici, October 2017— Ideal hotel for great city break in Rome! Well situated on a quiet street. There are numerous attractive restaurants in the vicinity, and an excellent pizzeria right next door. The hotel was attractive, and the room we stayed in was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good. There was also a very nice little courtyard to sit in. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and helpful with regard to enquiries and reservations. We would definitely return to Hotel Medici on our next visit to Rome.

Champ-Élysées

“PARIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA.” — AUDREY HEPBURN. Hundreds of Club members have traveled to Paris with us over the years and this Travel Club classic remains one of the best values in travel today! We'll stay in a quiet street of the 16th arrondissement, in the heart of Paris, at the four-star Hotel Victor Hugo Paris Kleber, in strolling distance to the Place du Trocadero, the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysees, and the Arc de Triomphe. Often compared to NYC's Upper East Side, the posh 16th is elegant residential neighborhoods with pretty art-deco architecture, world-class museums and fine restaurants. Located on the right bank between Boulogne-Billancourt and the Arc de Triomphe, the 16th includes the vast wooded area of Bois de Boulogne and we'll enjoy the wide tree-lined boulevards, neighborhood bistros, elegant gardens and vintage boutiques of this area. Note: While the Eiffel Tower is located in the 7th arrondissement, the 16th lays claim to some of the most impressive views of it. The best outlook is from Jardins du Trocadéro—it offers some of the best views of this famous landmark as well as striking panoramas of the city—for some of the best head to the terrace bar at Hotel Raphael.
