REASONS for all SEASONS
Just a 40-minute ride from Boston, we invite you to stop and stay a while. Enjoy a morning beach walk, an afternoon of exploration, a full day of touring, fireside dining, boutique shopping, or an overnight stay with ocean views. We welcome you to Gloucester and Cape Ann all year ‘round!
FALL
Spring daffodils- Stacy Boulevard
SPRING From its earliest days as
a fishing and shipping port to its mid19th century role in the granite industry, to its singular charms of light and sea that have attracted countless artists from the 19th century to the present, Gloucester boasts a rich and varied culture of nationally significant historical, industrial and artistic achievement. We celebrate this light and color with Cape Ann Artisans Spring Studio Tour and daffodils on the Boulevard.
SUMMER
Fresh seafood abounds and the harbor is alive and bustling with schooner sails, harbor and light house tours, and deep-sea fishing. Some of the world’s best whale watching is just off our coast at Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary.
Come visit our enchanting North Shore coastline and experience crisp ocean air, colorful surroundings, and warm hospitality. Some events to note: Trails & Sails, Cape Ann Plein Air, Schooner Festival, Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show, and the Annual Great Brewers Gran Prix Cyclocross Race, Rocky Neck Art Colony strolls, and fireside dining.

WINTER
In the winter, with the fishermen at rest, the pace of life slows to match the region’s calm understated beauty. Yankee Magazine voted Gloucester one of their “Best 5 Winter Ocean Weekends” stating “wintertime waves are mesmerizing, the ocean’s restorative energy a constant. So why not heed the salt water’s call when lodging rates and seashells are the best you’ll find all year? This beloved coastal community has a quieter alter ego worth getting to know.”

The Man at the Wheel © Elizabeth Carey
Gloucester History & Heritage
This eight-foot-tall statue shows a fisherman dressed in oilskins standing clenched at the wheel on the leaning deck of his ship. Positioned so that the fisherman is gazing out over Gloucester Harbor and sculpted with a rough finish to demonstrate the fisherman’s rugged appearance and impending danger.
Six of the most recent names on the tile are those of captain and crew from the Gloucester-based Andrea Gail, the fishing boat made famous in the book and film, The Perfect Storm. Further south on Stacy Boulevard, surrounded by gardens, is the Fishermen’s Wives Memorial. Also looking out to sea, this family group honors the patience and fortitude of families who even today anxiously await their loved ones’ safe return.
Sculpted by artist Leonard Craske and modeled after a local fisherman, the monument was completed in 1925 in honor of Gloucester’s 300th anniversary. The inscription at the base of the statue, from the Bible’s Psalm 107:23, reads: “They That Go Down to The Sea in Ships, 1623-1923”. Circling the monument are plaques with the names of those lost at sea from 1716–2001. Fishermen’s Wives Memorial

7 Rocky Neck Art Colony
America’s oldest continually operating art colony (since 1850), Gloucester has played a vital role in America’s art history. Artists such as Fitz Henry Lane, Winslow Homer, John Sloan, Stuart Davis, and Edward Hopper have all captured the “light” of Gloucester, as our many artists continue to do to this day.

Walk some 3600 acres in Dogtown where trails lead you to some two dozen Babson boulders inscribed with inspiring words, like “Never Try, Never Win”, carved during the Great Depression. Ravenswood Park has ten miles of trails and 600 acres of woodland and swamp areas. Hike a trail to view the harbor or visit the historic swamp magnolias. Thompson Street Reservation boasts 320 acres of trails, boulders, and vernal ponds. Hike the Sunset Mountain trail with its peak views looking out over Cape Ann.
Gloucester is home to many fine sailing vessels, the most iconic of which is Adventure. Built in 1926 in neighboring Essex, she measures 121.6 feet long, 24.5 feet in breadth. An exceptionally fast and able vessel, Adventure was the ultimate evolution of the fishing schooner. She retired from fishing in 1953 and was converted into a windjammer, cruising the coast of Maine until 1988 when she was donated to the city. Adventure is a symbol of Gloucester’s maritime heritage, and having received her passenger certification in 2015, she is again proudly sailing from her home port, along with the schooners Ardelle and Thomas E. Lannon. #`10 Babson Boulders in Dogtown

THE AWE OF IT ALL!
GLOUCESTER WHALE WATCHING © Cape Ann Whale Watch, two images
I get to share their stories with visitors the world over!
Whales bubble net feeding
The size, the grace, the mystery—all of these intrigue and fascinate people who return to Gloucester year after year for their Whale Watching experience. I came whale watching almost 25 years ago as a passenger. On that trip, a humpback whale named Zeppelin swam right under where I was standing on the bow. It was my first whale encounter and I was totally hooked from that day on!
© Jay Frontierro/7 Seas Whale Watch
I was so inspired, I asked about how to work on the boat. I was offered an internship, moved out here from my hometown in Indiana, working my way up to naturalist. It was then that I really began my “new” life—eating, breathing and sleeping whales! I continued my study with a Master’s degree in whale watch education and now, 25 years later,

Jen was just 10 years old when she saw a humpback, Midnight, and her calf. Midnight was teaching her calf flipper slapping for what felt like an hour… that was the whale Jen chose to adopt. A year later when she was back for another visit, Jen shadowed me for the day as a Jr. intern. Jen later wrote me a letter and drew a picture of two humpbacks bubble net feeding. Fast forward to after college. Jen decided to come to Gloucester to work with us. Approaching the end of her internship, it was Jen’s day to call the trip. As we advanced the whales, who is the first whale we come upon? Midnight and her new calf! Jen was so excited! It’s like the circle was complete.
Onboard naturalists work with kids big and small.
Emily was five when her obsession with whales truly began. Her aunt adopted the whale Crystal along with receiving the picture, the book and the stuffed animal. 20+ years later, Emily now reads that same book to her daughter and they make their annual visit from New York to Gloucester for their whale watch excursion. It’s an experience you will never forget. Why not create a memory of your own this summer on a whale watch out of Gloucester. Cynde McInnis
GLOUCESTER’S ANNUAL SCHOONER FESTIVAL
August 31 – September 2, 2018 Stacy Blvd is the best place for viewing Sunday’s Parade of Sail ©Jeffrey Stockman
The schooners return to Gloucester in late summer as we celebrate the 34th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival. Maritime Gloucester will welcome more than 20 schooners to its recently rebuilt Harriet Webster Pier.
The weekend offers a wide range of sights and sounds. Taking place in the harbor and nearby waters of America’s oldest seaport, the Gloucester Schooner Festival honors the major role the fishing schooner – invented here in 1713 – has played in the heritage of Gloucester and the eastern seaboard. Old and new, large and small, a variety of schooners will visit Gloucester Harbor throughout the weekend, delighting all who visit. Gloucester’s beautiful harbor, acclaimed by explorer Samuel de Champlain as “Le Beauport” is the backdrop for a unique mix of modern day and traditional vessels from the age of sail. A spectacular highlight of the Gloucester Schooner Festival is the Parade of Sail on Sunday morning as participating schooners make their way through the harbor and past the breakwater, to the Mayor’s Race starting area off Eastern Point. Regina Piantedosi PA I N T E R - P R O G R E S S I V E A R T An isolationist theme runs through my work. It’s not something I do deliberately, it is in my core - my essence. Recently, my singular boat adrift in an ambiguous background was chosen by the Massachusetts Poetry Society’s cover artwork for the publication “Born to be Lonely”. Its stunning simplicity is a bold statement about our life’s journey and the human condition. My process is a continuum combining Expressionism, Surrealism and Minimalism. Using self-discovered methods I work in encaustic, glass on canvas, mixed media, collage, metal, and metal leaf. See more of my work at www.reginapiantedosi.com
Ann Schlecht SEA GLASS JEWELRY Being a metalsmith and working with fine metals, I quite often incorporate local sea glass and beach stones in my minimalist designs intended for everyday wear. I feel a deep connection with nature and history and like to recycle and repurpose items as well as create from scratch. So many items from long ago have such beauty –I love to use them in my designs. When I was 14 years old my parents gave me a silver napkin ring for Christmas and a few days later my Mom asked, “where did you get that bracelet?” I had cut the napkin ring with kitchen shears and the end result was a beautiful sterling silver cuff. That’s when they signed me up for silversmithing classes! Another love of mine is to collect antique wax seal stamps and make silver and bronze charms with the actual stamps. My jewerly can be found year round at Local Colors and late spring to early fall at my studio/store on Madfish Wharf in Rocky Neck and online at www.thegildedlilystore.com
Sally Seamans TIN CAN SALLY
I use recycled printed tin cans to create whimsical, colorful birds, fish, jewelry, mobiles, collages and more. I often work in multiples, creating installations of flocks of birds, schools of fish and rabbles of butterflies. My favorite installation was a yearlong exhibit ‘Trash Menagerie’ at the Peabody Essex Museum that incorporated 386 tin birds. The sources of my tins are second hand shops, flea markets, yard sales, dumpsters and generous donations. A few examples of the tin containers that I use are biscuit, olive oil, cookie, candy, spice, tea, anchovy, curry, ethnic food and sewing tins. Tin Can Sally is my pseudonym. I am also known as Sally Seamans. My work can be seen at: www.tincansally.net DiscoverGloucester.com 21

Lobsters are caught in traps. Look for the colorful buoys floating in the harbor. Each lobsterman has his own colors and patterns to help him easily find and mark his traps.
Lobster is a sustainable local fishery. Look for colorful lobster buoys in the harbor and flat topped lobster boats working the traps. Lobster is always in season—and always delicious.
•
Lobsters are related to insects, crabs and spiders.
•
A female lobster carries her eggs on the underside of her tail for 9-11 months. If an “egger” lobster is caught, she is tagged and returned to the water. Tagged lobsters, if caught again, are returned to the water to preserve the breeding stock.
• A one pound lobster may be between 6 and 9 years old. The record is 44 pounds.
• Lobsters can use the fine hairs on their legs to “smell.”

ESSEX As the birthplace of the fried clam, this picturesque community yields some of the finest seafood on Cape Ann. Whether a cup of clam chowder or a plate of steamed clams, you will not be disappointed. But the quiet town of just over 3,000 residents has much more to offer than great seafood. Antiquing, a premier Essex attraction for generations, remains a favorite pastime for the locals and visitors.Shipbuilding has been part of Essex’s heritage for more than 400 years; some are sailing Cape Ann waterways today. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is a must see to truly appreciate the incredible heritage of this small community. Kayaking or taking a cruise down the Essex River will give you a unique view of the tidal salt marsh as you meander with the river outward Conomo Point and Ipswich Bay. VisitEssexMA.com
MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA
Manchester Harbor
Founded as Jeffrey’s Creek in the mid-1800s, this town is located at the southern end of Cape Ann. “By-The-Sea” was added to the town’s name in 1989 as a means to differentiate the town from Manchester, NH, its larger neighbor to the north. A trip to Singing Beach, aptly named because of how the sand resonates when you walk on it, or Tuck’s Point is worth your time and then some. Beautiful retail shops, restaurants and galleries fill the town of just over 5,000 residents. The Manchester Historical Museum’s Trask House is a must-see to get the complete story of this town known for its beautiful historic architecture. Manchester.MA.US

Gloucester History & Heritage
The Infamous Sea Serpent
Since 1635, there have been sightings of a strange creature swimming in Gloucester Harbor. Hundreds saw it in the early 1800s, but local scientists could not classify it, and local fishermen didn’t recognize it. It was described as 100’ long, as big around as a barrel, with the head of a horse. Apparently peaceful, it was mostly interested in chasing herring. It hasn’t been spotted in the harbor in quite some time.
© Jeffrey M. Stockman
The Greasy Pole
More recent, but equally bizarre, is the annual Greasy Pole contest, in which men walk a slippery pole over the water to capture the flag on the end. Winner gets bragging rights and a chance to walk in Sunday’s Champions round. Everyone gets bruises as they slip, slide and fall 20’ or more into the harbor below. StPetersFiesta.org June 29 - July 1

FRESH FROZEN Local inventor Clarence Birdseye perfected frozen fish in his waterfront factory. He packaged fresh fish in cardboard boxes then flash froze the box. After fish, he turned his attention to produce, building a ‘veggie cannon’ to quick freeze peas and carrots. Birdseye then had to persuade grocery stores to install freezers, and build refrigerated trucks to transport the product. His innovations forever changed the way we shop and eat.

FIRST SETTLERS Gloucester was settled in 1623 by a mixed group of Puritans, fishermen and farmers from England. After a couple of years the Puritans and farmers moved on to found nearby Salem, where the soil was better for crops. Only the fishermen stayed.

While foodies around the globe have embraced the “Farm to Table” concept, here in Gloucester we’ve put our own perspective on sourcing local, natural, responsibly harvested, under-utilized species and in-season seafood cuisine. You are likely familiar with the phrase: ‘Ocean to Table’…we call our model
BAIT TO PLATE There is nothing more delicious than seared tuna hooked the day before…a steamy bucket of clams harvested from the Essex River a few hours ago…or a boiled lobster caught off Magnolia earlier in the day. It just doesn’t get any better than the freshest seafood from Gloucester’s shore. To help make your way around our 400-year-old port of Gloucester from a culinary concept, we’ve assembled a collection of restaurants, tours, attractions, museums and activities - mostly on or 54

near the water, where you’ll enjoy a truly wholesome seafood experience. This is a “self-guided” Discover Gloucester Seafood Trail encouraging you to check out the listings and customize your specific trail to suit your interests. There’s so much to discover here in Gloucester about our seafood and maritime industry… we expect you’ll learn something new, indulge in our fresh seafood delicacies, and have fun along the way! Since 1623, the people of Gloucester have created wealth from its relationship to the ocean and its proximity to some of the greatest fishing grounds in the world. Today, that narrative continues to evolve in response to a changing ocean, new technologies and emerging marketplaces. Through it all, Gloucester remains a proud and active American fishing port. We hope you get a “taste” of that during your stay in Gloucester.

LOBSTERS are brought in by lobstermen, from traps marked with colorful buoys which you can see dotting the coastline. CLAMMERS set out in small open boats at low tide. They use forks to dig in the mudflats for clams. DRAGGERS, with their nets coiled on huge spools at their vessel sterns, head out to deeper water in search of ground fish, such as cod, halibut and haddock. TRAWLERS, the largest vessels in the harbor, go out for several days at a time and harvest huge amounts of mackerel and herring. TUNA BOATS follow the old ways with hook and rod, and SWORDFISHERMEN long line, helped by some high tech assistance. All bring their catch back to port, where it is recorded, sold, processed and trucked to local restaurants and markets or flown to distant lands, either fresh or frozen.

GLOUCESTER FRESH SEAFOOD
Gloucester Fresh supports “America’s oldest fishing port” by bringing new attention to the many fish markets available that supply local fresh seafood. The program helps local fishermen, some of whom are fifth and sixth generation, and markets that have a long tradition of providing quality fresh fish, shellfish and value-added seafood products. The fishing industry has been an integral part of the Gloucester community since 1623. Since then, the city has taken significant steps to promote sustainable seafood both regionally and nationally. The “Gloucester Fresh Restaurant Membership Program” is an innovative initiative designed to connect Gloucester fishing companies directly with restaurants in the region. This collaboration highlights the world-class seafood and dining experience available in the City of Gloucester and Cape Ann region by using Gloucester Fresh branding and promotions. The City of Gloucester developed this program at the request of eager restauranteurs interested in providing their customers with the best local seafood.
