W

hether artists are looking for a new community of collaboration and support, or simply need to take a step away from a cluttered schedule, residencies and workshops provide a means to rejuvenate the imagination, reconnect with creative peers, or even completely redirect work in exciting ways. The following is Art New England’s annual presentation of residencies and workshops for 2016. Take a hint from Henry David Thoreau, New England’s original practitioner of the residency retreat, and find your own Walden Pond.

Connecticut

Lyme Academy Artist Residencies and Workshops Dates: August 8–12 Registration opens February 1. The Center for the Arts at Lyme offers a series of summer residences that give adult students a rare opportunity to work with nationally and internationally renowned artists on a rural campus just two hours from New York and Boston. Students can work en plein air and experience the bucolic lower Connecticut River Valley, known as the birthplace of American impressionism. Workshop participants also have access to Lyme’s state-of-the art studios, art store and art library. Students can choose to stay on campus in the fully furnished, air-

Mystic Museum of Art is the premier southeastern Connecticut location for studio-based drawing and painting classes, as well as for classes in other media. Five-week courses and weekend workshops take place in the riverside studios, located in scenic downtown Mystic. Faculty instruction by community and master artists meets the needs of beginners as well as more advanced students. 26 Split Rock Cove Summer Art Workshops Dates: Residency available year round, workshops are ongoing. Along the shore of mid-coast Maine, 26 Split Rock Cove is a welcome retreat offering studio space, living arrangements and workshops for artists and writers looking for a peaceful and

nurturing environment. The workshops focus on writing and bookmaking and are available to beginning and practicing artists and writers. The Artist Retreat Space apartments are quiet, live/ work one-bedrooms within walking distance of the shore. They have a private stone patio with views of the ocean. An optional studio space is available for renters staying less than three months. Haystack Mountain is an international, nonprofit studio program offering a two-week residency program and one- and two-week workshops for craftspeople and visual artists. The Open Studio Residency is designed to foster artistic exploration and provide uninterrupted time to work between six studios: ceramics, fiber, graphics, iron, jewelry, and wood. Artists investigate materials, technology, craft and the creative process on an award-winning campus designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. The Haystack community is comprised of approximately 85 participants, including staff, students

Clay is the core of the Watershed experience, though many artists use their time to explore, contemplate and experiment with various approaches to creating.

Open-concept studios are in a 16,000-squarefoot building once used as a barn and are equipped with standard ceramic equipment such as slab-rollers, mixers, pugmill, wheels, extruder and hotbox. Artists are housed in modern, rustic cabins on Watershed’s upper campus. Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts Dates vary per class. Deadline: First come, first served. Celebrating 340 years of continuous opera-

tion, The Eliot School provides education and inspiration in craftsmanship and creativity. For adults: wood/furniture, fibers/fashion, book/ paper arts, mixed media, and fine arts. For children: after school classes, weekend classes, Summer Program. It also partners with Boston’s public schools, libraries and community centers. 2016 Adult Summer Intensives include “The Artisan’s Table,” a series in which students will create tools for making and serving handmade pasta, culminating in a shared meal at the end of the week. RESIDENCIES RESIDENCIES Fine Arts Work Center Dates: June 12–August 26 The Summer Workshop Program at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA offers over 80 week-long open-enrollment workshops by many of the most respected and renowned writers and artists working today. This year’s 11-week program has expanded to include workshops in filmmaking, performance art, video, and music. Classes include a new master printer series, drawing, oil painting, plein air, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, poetry, fiction, memoir, non-fiction, songwriting, and more. With a commitment to diversity of expression, courses are offered at all levels. The residency culminates in an exhibition of work at the school’s Foster Gallery. Pilchuck Glass School Summer Program Dates: May through September. Pilchuck Glass School is an international center for glass art education. The serene campus in Stanwood, WA, is nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains on a former tree farm. The Summer Education Program is composed of sessions that vary in length and feature an outstanding roster of instructors and artists-in-residence. During each session, applicants may enroll in one of five courses on different glass-related techniques and concepts. Pilchuck’s courses are designed with the understanding that people thrive on creativity and that talents and skills can be cultivated at any stage of life. Atelier de la Rose Artist Residency Dates: March–November. Deadline: Rolling. At Atelier de la Rose artists and writers will have time, space and support to work creatively in the tranquility of a medieval hilltop village. The central courtyard leads to a fully equipped stone-built studio with its own rose garden. A large private terrace opens to panoramic views of the garden and the valley beyond. Next to the studio, an independent guest wing provides on-site accommodation. Easels, trestles, drawing boards, folding chairs, sketching stools and slide projection facilities are provided. On-site meals are available. Optional extras include guided tours to the cave art of Pech Merle and

La Macina di San Cresci offers artists an opportunity to work for an extended period of time (7 to 90 days) in an environment rich in history and surrounded by the Chianti landscape of Tuscany. The relaxed atmosphere and splendid 10th-century building form an exciting combination. La Macina staff work closely with each resident to facilitate the space and collaborative opportunities, and even curator assistance is available.
