F

or artists, residencies and workshops provide welcome new horizons with the space and time to refocus and recharge creative energy. This issue’s feature, “Craft, Chisel, Collect” by Susan Hodara (see page 34), follows three such artists as they delve deep into their respective calling without the distractions of daily life. Each uses the gifts of time, tools, studio space and expert guidance differently—and therein lies the point. A great residency is made to suit the artist, who in turn is able to better pursue his or her raison d’être: to create. Inspired by the artists featured, the following is Art New England’s annual presentation of residencies and workshops for 2018, a trusted source of inspiration for the New Year. Connecticut Lyme Academy Dates: August 6–10 Registration deadlines vary. The Center for the Arts at Lyme offers a series of summer, studio-based workshops with renowned artists on a rural campus just two hours from New York and Boston. Students can work in Lyme’s state-of-the-art studios or en plein air and experience the bucolic lower Connecticut River Valley, known as the birthplace of American impressionism. In 2018, Lyme Academy offers Plein Air Painting With Mark Boedges (August 6–10). The workshop includes plein air painting from observation in scenic locations around Old Lyme, CT, and daily demonstrations by Boedges of his versatile techniques for achieving a high level of realism while painting plein air. Participants will have access to Lyme

Italy International Center for the Arts Dates: May­–October Registration deadlines vary. The International Center for the Arts’ residency program in the Umbrian hill town of Monte Castello offers artists the peace and tranquility of a perfectly preserved medieval walled village, surrounded by spectacular panoramas of the Tiber Valley and surrounding mountains. The residencies include private or shared studio spaces in 14th-century buildings, and accommodations in a former convent (the “Asilo”) or apartments around the village. Non-artist spouses can enjoy cooking classes with expert chefs, or even take a course to receive sommelier certification through the Italian Sommelier Association. Rock Cover is a welcome retreat offering studio space, living arrangements and workshops for artists and writers looking for a peaceful and nurturing environment. The Artist Retreat Space apartments are quiet, live/work one-bedrooms within walking distance of the shore. They have a private stone patio with views of the ocean. An optional studio space is available for renters staying less than three months. Apartments and private studio spaces can be rented by week, month or year. Workshops focus on writing and bookmaking and are available to beginning and practicing artists and writers. Tillman Crane Photography Workshops Dates: March–October Registration deadlines vary. Internationally known photographer and skilled teacher Tillman Crane leads short, week- or weekend-long workshops at a variety of locations across the United States and beyond, for all levels of expertise and camera formats. Enrollment in these intimate courses is often capped at 15 participants or fewer, and workshop themes and locations are carefully curated to be of the utmost photographic interest to participants. Topics for 2018 range from “A Portrait of a Community: Lincolnville, Maine” (June 22–27) to “Spirit of Structure: Tuscany, Italy” (October 6–13). RESIDENCIES RESIDENCIES Goetemann Residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony Dates: June 1–October 30 Application deadline: February 8 Renamed in 2010 in honor of its founder, the respected Gloucester artist and art professor Gordon Goetemann, this residency provides four artists per year with a month-long stay in a livework studio on Rocky Neck’s Madfish Wharf, with access to the rich cultural community of Gloucester, MA. Selected artists demonstrate a high caliber of work, originality and seriousness of purpose. Vermont Vermont Woodworking School Dates and registration deadlines vary. Vermont Woodworking School is housed in a three-story, historic barn turned modern woodworking facility in bucolic northern Vermont. The master craftsmen and women who instruct there teach extensive furnituremaking techniques. Taking a short course is a great way to participate for those who cannot enroll for a full semester, or who want to get a taste of the trade. Workshops and weekend intensives happen all year, with most occurring in the summer. Course offerings for 2018 include intensives in turning, building your own wooden box, an introduction to hand-cut dovetails and more.
