FOCUS ON SUMMER RESIDENCIES & WORKSHOPS

ime is one of the most valuable things we can have, and there never seems to be enough. It’s what enables us to focus on our work, to dedicate ourselves to the projects that drive us. How many times have you found yourself saying “If I just had a few more hours in the day…” Here lies the beauty of residencies and workshops: they allow you to step away from the day to day and kindle the latent talent we oftentimes neglect to nurture. “Self care” became a bit of a buzzword in 2019, synonymous with exercise and clean eating. Yes what if self care looked like diving deep into a skill, exploring a craft you’ve always wanted to try or visiting a location that pushes you to consider life from a new vantage point? In the new year, Art New England encourages you to think about the skills you could grow and master if you just had the time. Maybe

it’s bookmaking, improvisational painting, furniture design or blacksmithing, or that project you keep picking up and putting down as life demands other things. And then take the plunge—whether you apply to a quiet poetry retreat in a rustic carriage house or a balmy getaway to a wildlife reserve in the Florida Keys, allow yourself to make time for your art and your craft in 2020. For inspiration in this new year, this column includes a selection of live-work residencies, immersive programs and workshops offered across the country. All that’s left to do is imagine yourself on one (or two, or three) and commit to dedicating time to the work that drives you.

Alaska Chulitna Lodge Wilderness Retreat Mid-May through December

Residency application deadline: January 15 Chulitna Lodge, a wilderness retreat center located within Lake Clark National Park, Alaska, is a unique getaway for artists. At Chulitna, log cabins and yurts function as sleeping quarters and studio spaces. The retreat also has a library, a full wood-shop and a large shared studio space, however, most resident artists are drawn to Chulitna for its ample access to the outdoors. Chulitna’s residency season runs from May 20–October 5. Residencies are open to artists of all mediums including visual arts, performance arts, music, research and writing. Artists may be awarded a full fellowship (room and board and travel stipend) or partial fellowship (room and board) which allows them to stay at the wilderness retreat for six weeks. For paying residents ($800/week for shared cabin; $1,300/ week for private cabin), one- to two- week residencies are available. This residency is ideal for
