A PEEK AT THE PAST

Taking the Mystery Out of Boston History

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE PLAZA W

hile officially unveiled in the 1970s, the expansive Christian Science Plaza in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood has origins that date back to the late 19th century.

Consisting of several buildings and a grand open space that form the headquarters of the Church of Christ, Scientist, this still-evolving area continues to welcome visitors from all over the world.

The Church, founded by New Hampshire native Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 and based on the teachings in her 1875 book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, initially established its presence in Boston with the opening of the first Christian Science reading room in 1888, which was followed by the completion of the Romanesque-style Mother Church (refer to listing, page 43) in the city’s Fenway neighborhood in 1894. The burgeoning plaza’s footprint was expanded in 1906 when the monumental, Byzantine-style Church Extension opened its doors right next to the growing religion’s original house of worship.

Although Eddy passed away in 1910, the Church’s campus continued its growth, adding such buildings as the one housing The Christian Science Publishing Society—now home to the Mary Baker Eddy Library (refer to listing, page 23) and its landmark Mapparium—from 1932–34.

Nearly four decades later, the plaza we know today began to take shape with an expansion plan that included a 28-story administration edifice, a 525-foot-long colonnade, a popular spray fountain and a massive reflecting pool, all designed with the help of I.M. Pei & Partners.

An extensive, multi-year renovation and reconstruction of the Christian Science Plaza is currently underway, including a now-rebuilt reflecting pool. See the progress for yourself at the 14th annual Opening Our Doors Festival (refer to listing, page 20) on October 14, a Fenway-wide arts celebration centered around the plaza that begins at 10 a.m., offering a parade, live music and dance performances, all for free. —Scott Roberto

FENWAY FREE FOR ALL

Now in its 18th year, the Fenway Alliance’s Opening Our Doors Festival (refer to listing, page 20) once again brings free cultural events to one of Boston’s most vibrant neighborhoods on October 14 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Centered around the Christian Science Plaza, the day of festivities begins with a New Orleans-style parade, music, poetry, dance and even free cupcakes. Other performances take place throughout the area along with art demonstrations, tours, a Japanese tea ceremony and indoor kite flying, while open houses take place at such famed neighborhood institutions as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (refer to listing, page 22) and the Museum of Fine Arts (refer to listing, page 23).

A NEW LOOK AT NUBIA

A fresh look at an often-overlooked civilization unfolds on October 13 at the Museum of Fine Arts (refer to listing, page 23) in the new exhibit Ancient Nubia Now, which explores the fascinating kingdom that flourished in the land south of ancient Egypt through the display of more than 400 objects spanning Nubia’s millennia-long existence. Many artifacts in the show were unearthed in the early 20th century by a joint expedition by the Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard University, yet due to the richness and breadth of this world-class collection, some treasures are just now making their public debuts. Marvel at dazzling jewelry, majestic statuary, a still-untranslated inscription and more while learning of Nubia’s glorious past and the reasons its legacy is not more widely celebrated.

A SQUARE DEAL

If you haven’t heard of the beloved cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants, then perhaps you’ve been living, much like the aforementioned fictional sea creature, in a pineapple under the sea since his television debut in 1999.

For fans in the Hub, there is now more than just reruns to keep our funnybones from getting brittle as the awardwinning Broadway sensation The SpongeBob Musical (refer to listing, page 21) makes its local premiere from October 15–27 at the Boch Center’s Wang Theatre. Join SpongeBob and compatriots Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and the rest of the denizens of Bikini Bottom as they belt out tunes by some of the greatest songwriters on land or sea—including Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith—live on stage in what is sure to be an extravaganza of sound, color and unbridled energy to delight young and old alike.

LIVING WITH ART

Beginning October 17, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (refer to listing, page 22) celebrates one of its most successful programs with the exhibit In the Company of Artists: 25 Years of Artists-in-Residence.

Of the nearly 100 creators who have participated over the years, this display shines a spotlight on pieces created by seven outstanding female artists who briefly lived and worked at the museum, drawing inspiration from its hallowed halls, just as many artists—including the renowned John Singer Sargent, considered the Gardner’s first artist-in-residence—and performers did in the institution’s earliest days at the behest of Isabella Stewart Gardner herself. Other works from past participants are also interspersed throughout the museum’s halls, further enriching viewers’ experience.

A REAL PAGE TURNER

Centered around Copley Square, the Boston Book Festival (refer to listing, page 19) returns to the Hub October 19, presenting appearances by dozens of renowned writers and publishing professionals from across the nation and globe at Back Bay venues that include the Boston Public Library (refer to listing, page 42) and the Old South Church. This year, the event has expanded its parameters, offering a second day of activities in Dudley Square in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood on October 20.
