A SUITE DUO

Star power comes to the Hub February 5–22 when the pre-Broadway run of the revival of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite (refer to listing, page 19) premieres at the historic Emerson Colonial Theatre. Featuring stage and screen luminaries—not to mention real-life romantic partners—Matthew Broderick (pictured, above left) and Sarah Jessica Parker (right), the play centers around the ups and downs of three couples who occupy the same hotel room at New York City’s Plaza Hotel at different times. Directed

by Tony Award-winning actor John Benjamin Hickey (center), this new production is the fi st-ever Broadway revival of Simon’s classic comedy, and the fi st revival of any of the beloved playwright’s works since his death in 2018. And Plaza Suite is actually no stranger to Boston—it had its world premiere at the Colonial in 1968.

THE PUCK STOPS HERE

For the 68th time, the annual Beanpot hockey tournament (refer to listing, page 18) once again makes Boston the center of the men’s college hockey universe for two nights as four traditional rivals—the Boston University Terriers, the Boston College Eagles, the Harvard University Crimson and the Northeastern University Huskies—take the ice at the TD Garden. The fi st round on February 3 matches defending champions Northeastern versus Harvard at 5 p.m., while the nightcap features B.C. and B.U. at 8 p.m. The winners of those games vie for the silver trophy—and city bragging rights—a week later at 7:30 p.m., while third place is determined in a consolation game that afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

DANCE DANCE EVOLUTION

The Boston Ballet’s fi st production of the new year, rEVOLUTION (refer to listing, page 16), highlights three giants who, as the title suggests, revolutionized 20th century dance by contributing elements of modernism to classical movements. No choreographer has had more of an impact on ballet in the past 100 years than George Balanchine, who is represented by 1957’s Agon, a classic collaboration with composer Igor Stravinsky. Glass Pieces, a 1983 work by Jerome Robbins that features the music of Philip Glass, follows, while the groundbreaking In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated—a 1987 piece by William Forsythe, one of today’s most innovative dance masters who is in the midst of a multi-year partnership with the company—closes a sure-to-be-thrilling evening of dance at the Citizens Bank Opera House beginning February 27.

A legendary local photographer is the focus of a new exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts (refer to listing, page 22) beginning February 8 when Elsa Dorfman: Me and My Camera makes its debut. The Cambridge-based artist is widely known for her portraits of both renowned figu es—such as poet and personal friend Allen Ginsberg—and everyday folks, yet this display features images where Dorfman has turned the lens of her rare, 20x24 Polaroid camera on herself. About 20 pictures taken over the course of 40 years are included, along with early black-and-white work done for her groundbreaking 1974 book Elsa’s Housebook: A Woman’s Photojournal, which photographically chronicles her close circle of friends, Ginsberg included. A companion exhibit that also explores artists’ depictions of themselves—Personal Space: Self-Portraits on Paper, which showcases prints and drawings by Käthe Kollwitz, Jim Dine, Robert Rauschenberg and more—is on display nearby.

AHOY, BOSTON!

For the nautically inclined, there’s no bigger event in the Boston area this winter than the annual New England Boat Show (refer to listing, page 18), which returns to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center February 8–16. Browse the latest vessels and equipment while also treating the family to such fun activities as building toy boats, salt water fishing demon trations and, believe it or not, paddleboating on an indoor miniature lake. There are areas to inquire about careers in the marine industry, as well as the latest information for boaters of all levels at the Discover Boating Experience. Completed in 1902 and on the National Register of Historic Places, this white marble Georgian revival tower commemorates the 1776 victory by George Washington’s Continental Army, which drove the British from Boston Harbor when they positioned an array of cannons near this site.

This haunting memorial features six luminous glass towers etched with the six million prisoner numbers of those who perished in the Holocaust.
