Boston MedFlight is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1985 that provides critical care medical transport by air to Nantucket’s sickest patients, those facing life-threatening illness or injury who require emergency transfer to a mainland Level One trauma center or other highly-specialized medical care. Each year Boston MedFlight transports over 400 patients from Nantucket alone, as many as five per day in the summer, and provides $1 million annually in free and unreimbursed care to Nantucket patients in need who are uninsured or under-insured.
Entering the Boston MedFlight Fleet in January 2023 – Cessna Citation CJ4 While the majority of Boston MedFlight patient transports from Nantucket are conducted by helicopter, having fixed-wing (airplane) capability represents an essential resource when weather conditions dictate (such as dense fog or icing), or for longer distance transports. Boston MedFlight’s new jet replaces a Beechcraft King Air 200 turboprop airplane, thus increasing range, speed, ride comfort and advanced technology. The Cessna Citation CJ4 Twin-Engine Jet has a cruising speed of 460 mph, and a range of 1,500 miles. Boston MedFlight’s new jet will join our fleet of air and ground vehicles, which includes five twin-engine helicopters, and eight critical care ground ambulances. Every Boston MedFlight vehicle is outfitted with medical equipment and technology to serve as a mobile intensive care unit. As with every transport we conduct, patients flown by jet are cared for by an expert clinical team consisting of a Boston MedFlight critical care nurse and critical care paramedic, who utilize advanced medical technology and capabilities, including mechanical ventilation, neonatal transport isolette, mechanical circulatory assist devices, blood and plasma transfusion, transvenous pacemaker, and extensive medication formulary. All Boston MedFlight Pilots-in-Command are licensed as Airline Transport Pilots (the FAA’s highest pilot certification) and have no less than 3,000 flight hours, including extensive instrument flying experience. These experience standards far exceed the industry average and assure consistently safe operations in all flight regimes.
The Opportunity Total cost of the jet is $9 million, including medical configuration. As a nonprofit, we are seeking leadership support to fund this key investment in the Boston MedFlight fleet and our transport capabilities for Nantucket patients in need. Sponsorship and naming opportunities are available, including displaying a donor’s name on the jet (in recognition of a gift of $1 million+), or on all 14 air and ground vehicles in the Boston MedFlight fleet (in recognition of a gift $5 million+).
