Beyond an exceptional music education, what makes a summer at BUTI unforgettable is the magic of Tanglewood. It’s more than just being on stage at Seiji Ozawa Hall or your earth-shattering lesson with a Boston Symphony Orchestra member. It’s the surround-sound feeling of belonging. It’s coming from the city and seeing green everywhere. It’s the smell of sunset mixed with dewy grass. It’s all of this and more—it’s JOY.

It’s hard to put into words, but whether performing at the Koussevitsky Shed, listening to a BSO world-premiere from the Tanglewood lawn, or meeting your idol for the first time backstage, the magic is there. From the moment you arrive on campus, the seed is planted and will continue to grow long after you leave; it will always be part of you. This captivating feeling is unlike anything else—you have to experience it yourself.

• Academic classes through the lens of a singer in diction and IPA, music theory, music history, movement/acting, and performance skills

• Opera scenes rehearsals and performances

• Masterclasses and guest lectures

• College and career prep seminars aimed at building portfolios, preparing for auditions, and other skills necessary to excel in the field

• Electives in health and wellness and more

• Solo performance opportunities

“BUTI really shaped my voice to be so much better then when I first came there. I had enough knowledge to get in, but the technique, style, and music theory that was taught there really showed me my potential, and called forth a new level of skill for me. Anyone who worked with me from before the summer has said I have improved significantly.

The principles and techniques I learned there shifted my mindset and changed my life for the better! I have truly made lifelong friendships and connections that will change the trajectory of my future for the best. The friends I made there have been the best and closest friends I’ve had in my life. Because everyone is there to make music at a high level, our similarities in mindset lead to friendships forming stronger than ever! All this to say, I truly do love BUTI. I recommend it for everyone who wants to grow not just musically, but mentally as well.

“My summer at BUTI was more than just a musical training program; it also enriched my life experiences. My teachers were knowledgeable about composers of all eras and my classmates were hardworking and supportive. Our masterclasses offered performance opportunities, constructive feedback, opposing opinions, and even a few laughs to make the sessions memorable. The improvisation workshop with Curtis Stewart further honed our musicianship, listening skills, and sense of community.

In addition to our own rehearsals and workshops, we had a lot of freedom to explore the local town and attend concerts and masterclasses held by our faculty, the Tanglewood Music Center, and Tanglewood’s summer festival, including at Seiji Ozawa Music Hall and the Koussevitzky Music Shed. Overall, BUTI offered a glimpse into the life of a college music major, providing a rewarding music experience.

Celebrating Belonging at BUTI

We recognize that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging work spans the life of an organization and transcends administrations. As we build these values into BUTI at the structural and foundational level, we aim to reduce the significant barriers that some students face because of their race, gender, economic status, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and other seen and unseen marginalized identities. Through partnerships, mentorship, scholarship, and relationships, BU Tanglewood Institute empowers young musicians and their educators to dream big and realize those dreams. We here at BUTI have an unwavering belief that musical excellence is everywhere, all around us, and seek to make this step of a student’s journey a safe and achievable one.
