A NOTE FROM THE DEAN OF BU COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS
I WANT TO GO ‘ROUND THE RINK, THE RINK.
Forty years ago in 1984, Jason Alexander (CFA’81) sang these words as The Rink premiered on Broadway with Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli co-starring and Truman Capote in the audience.
Similar to Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along , which also starred Mr. Alexander, The Rink was ahead of its time. Thankfully, a brilliant team of artists led by director Gregg Wiggans (CFA’25) has assembled to breathe new life into this modern classic.
Many of us of a certain age look back with fondness on the roller rinks of our youth. Rather than watching social media videos on a loop (since the core components—cell phones, internet—had yet to be invented), we skated in circles. Music played. Sometimes the rink would go dark, illuminated only by colored lights refracting off a disco ball. It was magical.
I am glad you are here. We built this theatre for you.

A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE DIRECTOR
WELCOME TO THE RINK!
One of the things we do well at the School of Theatre is rediscovering work that time, as it has rolled on, has seemingly forgotten.
In The Rink, this creative team has worked to bring the story of Anna and Angel and the deteriorating roller rink they call home back to neon-hued life. Penned by Terrence McNally, and the estimable team of John Kander and Fred Ebb, The Rink is a story of memory and homecoming, and does what most great theatre does, which is to invite us into a world perhaps unfamiliar, but through the very real struggles of its characters, also feels all too knowable.
In this particular musical, we watch as parent and child try to reconnect after the ravages of life have torn them apart. I am also thrilled by this team’s attention to storytelling and its commitment to inviting and immersing its audiences into the spellbinding world McNally, Kander, and Ebb created nearly four decades ago. Equally exciting is that Mr. Kander, in re-examining this musical, did what all theatre writers do until the pen or keyboard is yanked away, which is to re-read, re-imagine, and re-write. What a gift for SOT to be able to engage in “new” work in this way.
As always, thank you for sharing this experience with us.
Kirsten Greenidge Director, School of Theatre
