BOSTON UNIVERSITY OCTOBER 20 - NOVEMBER 6, 2022 LET THE RIGHT ONE IN BY JACK THORNE DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER V. EDWARDS ACTORS’ SHAKESPEARE PROJECT IN COLLABORATION WITH BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF THEATRE

A NOTE FROM THE DEAN

Iam thrilled to welcome you to Let The Right One In, an exciting, professional collaboration between Actors’ Shakespeare Project and CFA School of Theatre.

There is something compelling about gothic tales, the stories of vampires and the living dead. Their popular emergence occurred in the 19th century amidst the collision of “old” and “new” ways of living. The character of the sinister foreigner eager to corrupt “pure” lines served as a metaphor reflecting the anxieties certain folks had about living in an increasingly diverse, integrated society. Dr. Frankenstein’s creation symbolized the worry that humankind might use technology to play God and create life where it should not exist (which is also the story line of Jurassic Park).

There is a compelling psychological dimension within these tales and beneath the blood and gore. It is for this reason that gothic themes continue to inform contemporary storytelling, especially young adult dystopian novels. The character types have proven wonderfully pliable. In one story, the ‘monster’ is the misunderstood outsider. In another, the evil waiting outside one’s door. Sometimes both.

We learn a bit more about ourselves by attending to these stories and having an audience with a vampire.

A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE DIRECTOR

What is the live theatre experience today? After two years of uncertainty and fear we start to enter again into the collaboration about how we tell our stories on stage.

This particular play has a very contemporary journey, starting as a film, then winding its way to the theatre. When I first encountered the story, I found it haunting. This arresting story about loneliness and longing resonates in a way that will motivate conversations and linger in your memory.

Live theatre is experienced on many different sensory levels. We have the play we hear, the one we see, and the one that makes us feel. Theatre is an overall experience of a shared gasp, or a discovered sigh, that keeps us coming back through the doors to refresh our creative souls. An entire audience of people with silenced and tucked-away devices is one of the most radical and transgressive acts of today’s society.

Thank you for joining this revolution of live and devoted art-making.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

…Ah...let the right one slip in Slip in Slip in

And when at last it does I’d say you were within your rights to bite The right one and say, “what kept you so long?” “What kept you so long? ” Oh… - Morrissey lyrics from “Let The Right One Slip In”

John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Let The Right One In, inspired by Morrissey’s song above, has been adapted into several versions: two films, an upcoming television series, a comic book, and a play.

The legacy of the novel has excited horror lovers throughout the world, and Jack Thorne’s stage adaptation holds true to the promise of unnerving eerieness.

I read the play several years ago, and was moved by this simple yet harrowing vampire tale. Amidst the play introducing us to moments of heinousness on stage, we are given a glimpse into the life of a young boy, Oskar, trying to navigate ignorance and brutality. Yet, the brutality he fears is not just what audiences have grown accustomed to in the usual vampire tales - an undead dark figure that comes at night to drain our protagonist of their blood - but the otherizing, bullying, and neglect that he receives from his community - children, teachers and parents. Our vampire, Eli, is an uplifting and dark presence in Oskar’s life. So at its heart, this play is a coming-of-age story about two lonely souls on the fringes who find each other, and realize they can create a life together, though one is 12 years old, and one is 200 years old trapped in the body of a 12-year-old. What a lovely and creepy premise, giving us a taste of the monstrosity of humans and the humanity of monsters.

Oh, and did I mention there is quite a bit of blood?

I hope you will be unnerved and enjoy the show.
