he DarkRoom is multi-layered rapid prototyping and production program that involves a multifaceted approach to research & development, on-demand board production and custom race board production. The principle of the DarkRoom program is to develop, hone and refine our products at a much quicker pace allowing BOTE to remain at the forefront of innovation in the SUP industry. The DarkRoom provides our engineers and product developers with a playground for experimenting with advanced materials and production techniques in a controlled environment. Physically, the DarkRoom occupies close to 15,000sqft of space in our Ft. Walton Beach corporate campus. Spread throughout the space are some of the latest and greatest computer controlled machinery, highlighted by a 18’ 4-axis CNC mill and 3-D Plastic Printers.

The DarkRoom isn’t just a space; its a project with a purpose. Design ~ Each new board design that works it’s way through the Darkroom, begins with an idea born from a combination of necessity, curiosity and customer feedback. Using the latest CAD based software allows our lead designer, Corey Cooper, to rapidly explore and manipulate board shapes with extreme precision. Materials ~ In the darkroom we are constantly experimenting with custom materials to produce our boards. Always looking for lighter, stronger and more environmentally sustainable materials to improve product performance. We work closely with materials manufacturers to explore the various strengths and weakness of a variety of materials compositions and weaves.

Technology ~ The star of the DarkRoom is undoubtedly the shaping machine. The machine is a 4-Axis CNC Mill with a 17’ capacity. Built in collaboration with Mike Ewaliko from Precision Shapers, the custom machine is equipped to handle all of our radical deck cutouts, nose shapes, and bottom contours. With an accuracy of 1mm, there are really no limits to the complexity of our designs. DarkRoom Evolution ~ Prototype experiments are tested extensively and the design is painstakingly refined until a final production quality shape is attained. We call these final designs DarkRoom Evolution as their shape was born of the sweat and tears which are poured into every BOTE board design crafted in the depths of the DarkRoom. verglades National Park is a vast and deserted waterway, stretching over 734-square miles of Southern Florida. A tapestry of mangroves, small islands, rivers and deltas create a maze of exploration opportunities. But the abundant and sometimes dangerous wildlife can make for a downright challenging traverse via standup board.

Late last fall, Corey Cooper, Sean Murphy, Clint Brown and Ethan Luppert hatched what the casual observer might kindly call a spur-of-the-moment plan to paddle 100 miles of the Everglades Wilderness Waterway in seven days through river, swamp and open ocean. But unexpected cold weather kicked their schedule into overdrive, as they pushed through in a soul-crushing four. Despite the lack of preparation, the paddlers endured a test of mental and physical stability to become perhaps the first group to tackle the water trail. This is the story of their self-inflicted suffering.

SO I PADDLE OVER TO THIS FINGER DOCK DOWN FROM THE BOAT LAUNCH, GET OFF THE BOARD AND A 14-FOOT CROCODILE IS LYING ON THE BOAT RAMP. No water means no paddling and no beer

OTE Boards was born in 2009 and began collaboration with SweetWater in 2012. SweetWater raised over $100,000 last year through local and national efforts with their “Save our Water” campaign, and BOTE is excited to help the cause. For the past year, SweetWater, BOTE, and the Waterkeeper Alliance have been working on a collaboration to raise money and awareness for the Waterkeeper Alliance. The platform is a kick-ass, one of a kind (well, one of a few hundred), SweetWater Tie-dyed Lowrider BOTE Boards. The partnership makes perfect sense. BOTE makes paddleboards that are used on the water, SweetWater makes beer from the water and the Waterkeeper Alliance strives to protect the water...we clearly have a lot in common, and honestly should have teamed up a lot sooner! The goal is to raise proceeds by selling these unique boards, so people can continue to enjoy them on their local waters. With 10% of every board sold, we expect to contribute close to $20,000, which will add to SweetWater’s annual campaign goal of more than $150,000 in 2015. ”BOTE Boards and SweetWater Brewing Company are two of the best partners any group could ask for, we are thrilled for their continued support and we can’t wait to see the special edition Waterkeeper Alliance boards from BOTE/SweetWater on waterways around the country this year,” said Marc Yaggi, executive director of Waterkeeper Alliance. “While these groups sure know how to have fun, they are just as serious as we are about the need to protect swimmable, fishable and drinkable water, a necessary component of a day of paddling and of course great beers!” After the project was in place, it was time to get some content to promote it! To launch this collaboration, cold weather be damned, BOTE Boards snatched up photographer Sean Murphy and took a road trip to the SweetWater Brewery in Atlanta, GA because no water, means no paddling and (gasp!) no beer.

FINAL DESTINATION: SweetWater Brewery’s 18th Anniversary Party. Our buds Doug Wright and Steve Farace, at SweetWater, suggested we make the trip up and shoot all of our video and stills during their biggest party of the year, the anniversary party. It’s been an annual tradition that originated as a Better Late than Never Christmas party, turned Birthday, turned Anniversary celebration that basically ends up being a bigass party at the brewery with 3000 of their fans and friends. It was the perfect setting. WHY: To obtain bad ass content. SweetWater Brewery is based in Atlanta, GA is one of the biggest and best small breweries in the Southeast, if not the entire country. This is a bad ass project, and bad ass content was imperative for the collaboration, and everyone agreed that getting up close and personal shots in the brewery, would be one of the coolest ways to showcase the partnership. Not to mention the surrounding culture that Atlanta has to offer. ROAD TRIPPING: 331 miles We left BOTE Headquarters at the crack of dawn, and were making great time, but Sean Murphy will never pass up an adventure shoot opportunity. We pulled over in Opp, Alabama for a frigid impromptu paddle on Lake Frank Jackson. It was cold, but cool. We arrived in Atlanta on Friday and went straight to the brewery where Doug Wright, Director of Merchandising at SweetWater, welcomed the BOTE crew to the brewery with a beer, open arms, and the freedom to take over the brewery in order to get the content we truly needed to make sure this project goes looks as spectacular as the organization that it supports. We decided to first do a walking/informational tour without gear so we could get our bearings, and ideas to set-up some shots. So with our gear left behind, we began and sensory overload commenced. Millions of gallons of beer, oompa loompas, and the high pitch hum of glass beer bottles being filled, capped, labeled, and boxed at 100 miles an hour to start! We immediately run and gather our equipment, got some killer shots of the board in the brewery, (and on top of the brewery) and most importantly, met the cool people responsible for making such fine beer...and collectively probably drank 100 beers! The rest of Friday was a blur- Did we actually go to the Clermont Lounge… before 10PM? Yikes! Doug, who is also heading the collaboration project for SweetWater says, “The quality that Corey and the BOTE team put not only into the design of their boards but also into the way they present the brand is undeniable. The boards are beautiful. Period. And the function on the water is unparalleled whether touring, fishing, or just paddling for fun. At SweetWater we hang our hats on the quality of our brand. We believe that our brews need in the freshest, tastiest way possible. Likewise, the way our brand is perceived in market or used on a piece of merchandise must match the same commitment to quality. BOTE boards clearly shares this value therefore partnering on a high impact piece like the collaboration board was an obvious choice. Luckily we get to use this beautiful board to raise money for an organization like the Waterkeeper Alliance, so our common resource (water) is continued to be cared for.”

IT WAS 37 DEGREES: Way down yonder on the Chattahoochee! Our vision for Saturday was to hook up with the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) to get some cool pics and video of the whole gang paddling our sweet boards on the Chattahoochee. To begin Saturday’s journey, we headed to the brewery, where SweetWater was awesome to let us store our boards with the brews, and again, Doug was naturally waiting with beers. Before the first sip was even taken, SLAM! Our keys were locked in the van! So beers were put down, the locksmiths were called, after an hour waiting we finally headed towards Morgan Falls.The CRK was there waiting for us and Bonus! The CRK brought their official Riverkeeper boat to literally add some “vroom” to our shoot! It was overcast, cold, and by cold- it did snow the day before… but we hiked up our big girl pants and paddled out on the Chattahoochee. Sean and his shenanigans brought us to a half underwater marsh of mud and poo… literally, and got us to participate in some ridiculous stunts that were sure to make for killer content. Before the shoot was over, Sean proved no lack of commitment having immersed himself in icy water to get the perfect shots. THEY SAY IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY: SweetWater Brewery! Sunday was the big bash. We got a late start thanks to two days of free beers, but still managed to be early to the party. To say we made an entrance, would be a HUGE understatement. Sean, along with our videographers decided it would be a great idea to get footage arriving to the brewery with everyone causing a scene while hanging out of windows and riding on the side of The Mule...a little scary but just more commitment from the BOTE team to get the perfect shot! After about 17 circles around the brewery, we finally made it in. With a packed house, beer flowing, and The Revivalists on stage; the sold out party, was a party to not be forgotten. If you do the math- when you know how to brew awesome beer, you know how to throw an awesome party! SweetWater was more than welcoming and accommodating, they made us feel like we were at home and ensured that we had a killer time and were able to get the shots and content we envisioned for this project. We couldn’t have asked for more… really we couldn’t have asked for any more beers. SweetWater would not let us move into the brewery, so we were forced to abandon ship at 5AM, in the rain, the following morning with massive hangovers, which made for a super not awesome 5 hour ride home back to the office.Thanks SweetWater!

he first day I met Tim Blumh the rain was falling in buckets. Tim is a musician, surfer, traveler and an old California soul. He is the lead singer in the band, The Mother Hips, and also plays in his wife’s band, Nicki Blumh and the Gramblers. Once the rain subsided, both bands formed into one to give Fernandina Beach an epic musical performance. Over the next few days, Tim and I surfed and discussed SUPs and his newly found interest in the sport. What came of these talks was a collaboration between BOTE boards and the Gramblers - a paddle board that had the DNA of a traditional surf longboard. The BOTE Grambler was born. Corey Cooper–owner and lead board designer for BOTE– and I spent the next few months working out the details of the Grambler, both in performance and aesthetics. What came out of the endless hours of conversation, prototyping and surf sessions–which I call “research”–was a board that will fill a transitional gap; A board that will surf soulfully in small to medium surf and also be able to move seamlessly into flat water recreational paddling. With the design, shape and graphics package put to bed, we eagerly awaited the final product. In the meantime, a plan was beginning to formulate on how to deliver the first production Grambler to it’s namesake. Every year a music event called the Hipnic goes down in one of the most beautiful and scenic areas in the United States - Big Sur, California. My buddy and music aficionado, Ody Anderson planted an idea to hand deliver the Grambler

to Tim, Nicki and the Gramblers in Big Sur at their signature music festival! I was sold and The Grambler - Out For Delivery / PCH road trip was conceived. I was pretty stoked to say the least. The planning of a surf trip is one of those things in life that ranks up there with a kid’s anticipation of Christmas morning. This trip was no exception and the gear lists, the online recon for camping and surf spots, and all the traveling arrangements were made with the same excitement of ripping into those special gifts from Santa. The first person I contacted for road-trip advice was Sean Murphy. Sean is a world renowned photographer, surfer, and LA local. He became our host and guide and would document the trip with the insane imagery you now see on these pages. Ody Anderson was next to be added to the crew, not only for his hand in concepting this outing, but to add the positive vibe all road trips need. Shane Reynolds, videographer and all around ripper and media bad ass, rounded out our little band of misfits. The day of our trip finally arrived. As we taxied down the runway on our way from east coast to west coast a phrase popped into my head that would define this trip (and be one of the hashtags for our Instagram posts) #eastcoaststylewestcoastsoul - perfect. Sean picked us up from LAX in a large blacked out truck that looked more like a SWAT truck than a daily driver–a BOTE vehicle if there ever was one. We loaded our gear and headed out into the City of Angels to take a look around.

This was my first trip to central California and I wanted to make the most of our short time. After a quick detour to see surf legend Bruno Troadec and acquire one of his Breed single fins, we checked out Venice Beach, Malibu and a few other surf spots looking for some decent waves to wash off the air miles and get acquainted with the west coast waters. Coming from Florida, the first and most obvious difference is the water temperature. Hell, we had been out of wetsuits for a good six weeks and California was just catching her breath after a super solid south swell that had given birth to some kind of freak cold water upwelling. With the water hovering around 50 degrees, it took our breath away. This was in no way Kana Beach. I opted to swim out and do some bodysurfing using the BOTE Jackknife (hand plane) and Shane made a brief paddle out on his shortboard. After a solid few hours of fun waves and a somewhat regulated body temperature, we called it and headed back to the valley for authentic Mexican food and a few cold beers.

in Montana del Oro State Park where Tim and a friend, Bill Quirk, were there to greet us with a smile. Ever the adventurer, Sean whipped out his blow gun to test his marksmanship on some of the aforementioned birds. Tim and Bill’s smile quickly faded into disbelieving frowns. Once Sean was educated on the status of quail in California (State Bird), we took turns firing on a small plastic dinosaur, not as tasty as quail, but far less expensive in the long run. Tents were pitched, hammocks were hung, and fire gazing commenced as we all retired early with the anticipation of a dawn patrol the next morning.

With the truck and trailer loaded down with camping gear, SUPs, and as much liquid sustenance to last us a day or two, we headed north on the 1 towards our first way point, Morro Bay. We looked for places of interest along our route and decided against visiting the Neverland Ranch and opted instead to drive through the small community of Guadalupe looking for the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. This area has been the setting for several films, including Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 Ten Commandments and scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Figured it might be cool to see (and maybe try some sand boarding?). Not so much, unless you like restriction signs that don’t allow you to leave the concrete. In retrospect, maybe the creepy Neverland Ranch would have been a better choice.

One thing I have realized as I creep toward the half century mark is that when it comes to sleeping on the ground, I suck at it. I would rather be rolled down a hill in a tire and pecked by a flock of quail than endure the stiffness and pain from a restless night “sleeping” on the ground. There is no better way to shake off a little joint pain than to jump in the ocean and slide down some waves.

The next morning everyone was stoked to get out and surf. Of course, Tim had dibs on the Grambler…delivering it to Tim was the reason we had made this journey in the first place. We loaded the boards and headed to a spot called Sandspit just south of Morro Rock. It was a fun head high wave and we all spent hours trading boards and loving the way the Grambler flew down the line, was able to be cross stepped, and performed with soul. Our crew had a broad mix of surfing experience and the Grambler allowed everyone from near beginner to experienced long boarders to have a blast.

"What could have turned out to be a complete nightmare turned out to be a killer week with unlimited cool shit happening non-stop. Boards flew off cars, minimal equipment was ruined, lots of farts, a near beat down from locals at one of the surf spots (who knew SUPs and cameras were unwelcome!??), blow darts, humpbacks, hippies, human feces, freezing water, and a ton of laughs. It was rad...but it was no Kana Beach."â&#x20AC;? - SEAN MURPHY

That evening we hiked out on the cliffs to catch the incredible sunset that only the Pacific can offer. Not only did we get a sunset that would have rivaled any painters wildest palette but also spotted a chunky right hand break down below. After watching two lone surfers catch wave after wave, we knew we had to check this out first thing the next day.

the board to Tim, Nicki and the Gramblers. After the oohs and aahs subsided, everyone sat around the fire and talked about how cool it was to merge cultures (surf & music) that people have such an emotional connection to, together, with something as simple as an SUP surf board.

As another dawn cracked, the expectations were high. Out of the parking lot, Sean took the high trail to shoot from a killer vantage and the rest of us took the low trail to the break. With one guy out and another giving us a strange look, we jumped off the rocks and started our paddle out to the point. Being the only one on an SUP and understanding that localism still exists, I figured I had a target on my back. We all stayed off the peak initially to get our bearings and show a little respect to the other guy already in the line-up. I glanced in towards the shore and noticed “stink-eye” hard charging right for me. “Here we go”, I thought, and braced for what would hopefully be only a verbal encounter. To my surprise, he paddled right past me and gave Shane (and his GoPro) a less than warm CA welcome and a run down of all the “local” rules we were breaking - cameras evidently being very high on that list. I believe had they known Sean was high up on the cliff shooting frame after frame, their heads would have exploded. Even though the local cold shoulder was chillier than the water, we all managed to surf some epic beefy swell and left the Dukes to guard their gem.

The drive north on the PCH is one that everyone should have on their bucket-list. If the PCH is the main artery of scenic CA, then Big Sur is the heart. We arrived at Fernwood campground in Big Sur, the site of the Hipnic, to find a super chill crowd of music fans, hippies and good vibes. This was the time and place we had planned, designed and traveled to be a part of. The culmination of surf and music lifestyle–and the Grambler–was at the center. With Tim already having surfed the Grambler, we still had to unveil and present the board “officially.” With a fire in the pit and guitars throwing tunes in the air, we introduced

This was a music festival after all, and it was time for the band to play. Day gave in to night and the rest of the evening was filled with great music and dancing, old and new friends, and a brand new board–the Grambler– resting easily under the California moon. As we sat there, listening to the music, Ody leans over to me and says “We ought to do this trip again next year.” I ’m way ahead of you buddy. Way ahead. Gramble on.

They were all extremely glad to donate their valuable time and participate in this project. The final participant in the project was Maddeline Voas. Maddeline was one of the recipients of the aide provided by SOWF and understands, from first-hand experience, just how important the SOWF can be in time of need. Maddeline and her family have relied heavily on the SOWF for moral and financial support since her father was killed in Afghanistan five years ago. With the help and support of SOWF, Maddeline was able to attend college and graduated with a bachelors degree within 3 years. She is currently working towards her masters in Anthropology.

The production for the board begins with a rough cut from a block of foam. This is done with the help of a CAD driven software application working in conjunction with a custom CNC machine which physically carves the rough shape out of the foam block. Once the rough shape is created, it has to be hand hewn into a smooth and functional shape. Danny was responsible for sanding the rough blank into its final shape in preparation for lamination. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a messy process but he jumped right in.

Cody was responsible for applying the graphics, covering the board with fiberglass and adding a resin coating to the fiberglass. This step of the process is what gives the board its strength by bonding epoxy resin with fiberglass and allowing the resin to dry into a rock hard shell over the foam core.

Once the resin has hardened the board must be sanded to a smooth finish and holes cut for inserts such as fin boxes and Tackle Rac receivers. Sanding is one the most difficult and time consuming parts of the process so Matt had his hands full.

The final step to produce the paddle board is painting and finishing. For this we enlisted Maddeline Voas, one of the beneficiaries of the SOWF. This young lady is a living testament to the value that SOWF provide to the families of fallen soldiers and said she was proud to participate in this project. Fearless, Madeline jumped right into the process first taping off areas of the board to prevent over spray during the painting process. Then she put on the coveralls and went into the paint booth to put the final coat of paint on the board.

arlier this year, I came across a photo from the Dead Lakes in Wewahitchka, Florida, and I immediately knew that I would have to visit at some point. It’s a twohour drive from my home in the Panhandle of Florida, and a complete 180 from my regular scenery. Everything I’ve seen made the place look like a cross between Jurassic Park and a scene from The Lord of the Rings. I just needed to find the time to go paddle it. At BOTE, we had been diligently designing a board suited for the journeyman and explorer. When it came time to do some testing for our new board, the Traveller, I knew exactly where I wanted to go. The Dead Lakes seemed like a perfect fit. With two kids and a business to run, it is sometimes hard to get away for even a day. My husband Corey and I loaded up the SUV early one morning and headed toward the Dead Lakes. We took the scenic coastline most of the way before having to veer north. Once in town, we made a quick pit stop at a market to pick up some essentials like water, snacks and beer before heading out on the lake. For me, going to a new place for the first time is always a little nerve racking. Maybe it’s the mother in me, but about a million questions run through my head: “Is there public parking? A boat ramp? Do I need a permit?” Thankfully, the businesswoman in me did her homework and there was plenty of parking and a fully functioning launch site. My nerves turned into excitement for what was to come. Pictures of the Dead Lakes did not do it justice.The uniqueness and beauty can only be truly realized and felt in person. It was quite the change from the white-sugar sand beaches and emerald green and blue waters that I’m used to, but a welcome one. I lost cell coverage somewhere along the way, but it was killer to not be constantly buzzed with emails and calls. I was able to focus on the things that were directly around me. There were huge waterlogged cypress trees, giant catfish skulls and hand-size spiders everywhere. Other than the Dead Lakes,Wewahitchka is known for Tupelo honey, and the buzzing sound from the bees is very much present. It’s almost like a living white noise machine. Getting boards from the top of our SUV to the water used to be somewhat of a hassle, but the Traveller features our new Travelink™system. With a few simple clicks and little effort, my

board goes on my shoulder, my hands are free to carry my gear and I’m on the water, ready to paddle the lakes that I longed to explore. While I’m not afraid of many things, I am terrified of sharks and alligators (funny, considering my choice of hobbies). And while I respect both creatures and know that we are in their environment, I still can’t help but freeze up if I encounter one. As we were putting in, a group of men were having lunch at the picnic tables by the launch. This probably wasn’t their first time visiting the lakes. They were there to do some bass fishing (the Dead Lakes are the No. 1 place for bass fishing in the state of Florida), and they kindly reminded me to watch out for the gators. They had confirmed my fears that there are gators in the lakes, but I got a little relief when they said it was nothing in comparison to some of the other lakes they’d been to. Thankfully I quickly forgot about the chance encounter of a gator and was pulled into the beauty of the scenery on the Dead Lakes. Our gear for the day included large bags containing hammocks, a change of clothes, water, snacks and, of course, beer. Who doesn’t paddle with beer? Lugging around a bunch of gear on the deck of your board can be a small pain in the ass! Of course, this was part of the testing. If we were going to design a board to fit adventurers and travelers, then it had to hold gear, and comfortably. On this day, we were the test subjects, and we had lots of beer! We paddled the whole day and covered as much ground as we could. We had no clue where we were going. Behind every bend there was a new patch of trees to explore. Each and every tree trunk looked different, and each was its own piece of art. Waterlogged, swollen, dead, submerged, infested with spiders and all totally surreal. There is something about paddling into the unknown that opens your mind and brings out the best experiences. You don’t feel every paddle stroke. You become numb to any distance you travel, mostly because your mind is occupied with processing all the beautiful scenery and trying to figure out where you’re going. The main channel at the Dead Lakes is deep and clean of stumps and debris, so while staying in it, we were able to paddle without the worry of catching a fin on a hidden

stump. And trust me, this place is a hidden-stump city. I was wearing a GPS watch at the request of one of the board designers. They specified that I paddle some in open water to obtain some speed data on the board. Needless to say, I was extremely cautious… did I mention alligators? After making our way down the channel, we discovered an area of tree canopies. This is where the true beauty of the Dead Lakes is. There really is no other way to be able to navigate into the canopies but on a paddleboard. For all I know, we could have been the first people to enter some of them.

Around mid afternoon it started sprinkling (that’s what we call a light rain in the South) so we made a stop under the cypress canopy. We hung our hammocks to have a place to relax. Having little sun and being slightly damp, it became chilly, so we started a stump fire and hung out for a few hours. Hidden from anyone who passed, the mood was surreal. It made me not want to leave and go back to civilization. A few boats passed, only a few feet from us, but had no clue we were there. We were completely hidden from reality. It was the first time in the last few years that Corey and I had gotten a chance to get away from everything and relax on the water for the day. However, my short attention span got the best of me and I was itching to see more. So before long we packed up the hammock, put out the fire and headed farther into the lakes to see what else was out there. I kept trying to go farther and farther, because I was dying to see all of the secrets the Dead Lakes holds. While there was still more to be paddled, we had to face reality and get back to the launch site and the kiddos. Before turning around we got some last-minute playtime on the boards. The sun had started to peek out and warm us a little so I

decided to do a little risky swimming… and get my heart rate up from reptile fear! We made it back to the launch, pulled the Travellers from the water (the boards and the people!) and headed back to load up the SUV. Getting on the road before dark allowed us to see some of the back road scenery while re-entering civilization. Something tells me that no matter how many times I go back to the Dead Lakes, I’ll always discover something new. The Dead Lakes is honestly one of the coolest paddles we’ve ever done. In total, we only covered about eight miles, but we did it in leisure and became fully captivated by our surroundings. With my busy schedule, traveling becomes harder and harder, and day trips are all I can squeeze in. The Traveller was built for just that: travel. I have every intention of finding more of these hidden spots that I can travel to and conquer in a day. I’ve lived on the beach for close to 10 years now, and I am making it a goal to visit a new place each year that is not directly on the coastline.
