As brothers, Eric and Evan Geiselman grew up doing pretty much everything together. Having parents that fostered a life on the water from a very young age, a father who shapes surf boards and a mother who also surfs, it almost seems pre-ordained that these guys would end up accomplished watermen.
Nowadays, these professional surfers, working two different circuits, barely see each other. Usually just passing each other in the air as they travel from place to place. So vacation for these guys is at home, spending time with family and each other. We were lucky enough to catch up with them during a brief stint at their home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Music, fishing, golf, skateboarding. There’s not a lot that these guys aren’t good at. With as much natural born talent that they have, these guys still work their asses off and never take it for granted. In December 2015, Eric took a nasty spill at Hawaii’s Bonzai Pipeline where he nearly lost his life, so they have reason, more than most, to be grateful for the time they get to spend together. At the end of the day, no matter how appealing jet setting around the world as a pro surfer may seem, there’s one thing in life that makes it all worth while... family. And for these guys, no matter how far away their professional lives take them, their favorite place will always be “at home, with my brother.”

Few fish can match a tarpon’s acrobatics, strength and stamina. With skills that have evolved over millions of years while surviving a range of drastic climate changes, the mighty silver king can stem the strongest tides, elude fearless predators and overtake hapless prey with ease. However, widespread changes in their populations and movements signal significant issues throughout the coastal landscape of Florida and beyond. With a focus on protecting essential and historical tarpon fisheries before it is too late, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, and Florida Outdoor Experience set out to Florida’s Nature Coast for an expedition tagging tarpon not only for our enjoyment, but for those generations to come. Our crew for this foray comprised a group with an array of backgrounds including Dr. Aaron Adams of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, Chris Wittman of Captains for Clean Water, photographer extraordinaire Sean Murphy, creative genius Rob McAbee of BOTE, accomplished angler Heather Harkavy, Gray Drummond, Owner of Florida Outdoor Experience, and the radiant Captain Lacey Kelly who serves as Operations Manager at the FOE headquarters in Chiefland. Coinciding with the region’s epic migration of spawning tarpon where fish eclipsing 150 pounds attract anglers from far and wide, we set out with the ultimate arsenal of shallow drafting inshore platforms to navigate the tongue-twisting waterways that make this region an inshore angler’s paradise. But we were not after the world-record class tarpon that were feeding on the famed Chassahowitzka flats where Captain Steve Kilpatrick guided angler James Holland to the fi rst 200-poundplus tarpon ever caught on fly. Rather, we were focused on catching, implanting acoustic tags, and releasing 20 to 50-pound tarpon, which are the future of the fishery, to help determine potential spawning site changes and how freshwater flow into area waters might influence coastal migrations.

The best-laid plans are usually started by sketching on a napkin. When Jeff Spiegel and Corey Cooper sat down on a balmy Belizean night to discuss world peace, this was what they came up with... the BOTE House Belize. Now, the double occupancy cabana won't solve the issue of world peace, but it is certainly a place where peace can be found. Bonefish, permit and tarpon too! Located at Cayo Frances Farm & Fly, on the north end of Ambergris Caye in Belize, the BOTE House Belize was designed to allow anyone to come experience this unique environment and atmosphere. As well, the incredible fishing opportunities and culinary magic of Chef Spiegel. The construction of the BOTE House “was simple but not easy.” All materials had to be ferried from San Pedro roughly 12 miles by boat. The furniture was hand built in San Pedro utilizing locally sourced raw materials and also delivered by boat. The BOTE House Belize will be available for anyone to utilize. As a brand, BOTE feels that this place and the experiences and unique adventures you can find here are what it’s all about. It’s why we do what we do and provide the type of products we do. “We are not a board, a t-shirt, a hat... we are BOTE.”

Magda spent the majority of her teen and college years in a pool trying to become the best distance swimmer possible. She knows when to put her head down, focus, and just go. Although she fell short of her Olympic dreams, the lessons from the pool have permeated through the course of her life, from being fitness-focused to family-centered. It’s hard work ... but all worth it in the end. 58

Swimming also helped drive her career—to appreciate any successes but also be able to move on from any failures. It taught her that nothing comes easy. The competiveness and the never-give-up attitude helped her get through the early tough days of entrepreneurship when a lot of people would have quit. Being able to focus on the big picture and not letting the negatives get you down helped her to move on quickly. “Magda is one tough son-of-a-gun.”

Like most women, Magda juggles kids, being a wife, and working, but she manages to wake up early and fit in time for herself. Biking, swimming, and paddling are a mental break that allow her to momentarily be free of other responsibilities, so she can come back to them and manage it all with a clear mind and energy throughout the day. Her kids aren’t left out of her routine though. They’re incorporated so they’ll learn the value of taking care of themselves and working hard to succeed. By example,
she wants them to be good people, productive members of society, and to know that a work ethic pays off in the long-term. As a mom, wife, and business owner, she knows how important it is to work hard and stay in shape for all of her roles in life.

To many, yoga is a form of exercising. To others, yoga is a lifestyle ďŹ lled with morals to live by on a day-to-day basis. In an effort to bring together a group of people to learn and practice the virtues of yoga all while being immersed in nature, BOTE Ambassador TJ Mangrum put together a retreat in Cape San Blas, FL.
WE EXISTED IN A SWEET BUBBLE OF AHIMSA. WE REVELED IN OUR PERSONAL POWER AND ABUNDANT SELF-AWARENESS TJ MANGRUM
A couple of months ago, I was brainstorming an idea that had been on my mind for quite some time. Yoga retreats these days tend to be incredibly expensive with overwhelming travel. To most, this is not feasible monetarily or time-wise. Which is when a light bulb went off—we have so many amazing state and national parks within driving distance in the South East, so why not create a legitimately affordable and accessible yoga/
SUP retreat? And this is where the retreat began to take fruition. When I first considered what I wanted a retreat to be besides being affordable and accessible, I also wanted to leave the lightest “foot print” in our state parks, as possible. I wanted to offer people space to breathe and exist in nature. I believe, for many of us, experiencing BOTEBOARD.COM/AHIMSA

nature in direct support of us can be foreign. Living solely on the support of the raw ground beneath us isn’t something most people are often able to experience. To be in nature and experience the sun at mid-day and the stars in the evening, can only help with our awareness of how we daily interact with nature and our environment. I know that when I spend even an hour in the woods or on the water not only do I feel more abundant, but I also recharge my consciousness. I recharge my awareness and appreciation for a part of our world that can be ignored as we travel on paved roads to enter cement buildings filled with artificial lights. After some research and deliberation, I had found the perfect park. Cape San Blas was calling my name. I mean, c’mon! Cape San Blas is spectacular! Not to mention its campgrounds are magical. I then approached Corey at BOTE asking if we could borrow boards to lessen the costs. Without hesitation he said YES. Inexpensive travel: check. Inexpensive shelter: check. Boards: check! Once I had the boards and destination lined up, I collected the most amazing group of Yoga teachers to facilitate this project with me. Jessica McChesney (everything outdoor/ nature loving guru), Erik Brownsword (spreadsheet/love/ Harry Potter enthusiast), Charlie Graham (life enthusiast), Elizabeth Ocheltree (spirituality enthusiast). We planned

out every detail of the construction of our retreat. Through their enthusiasm and hard work, we were able to collect donations for food from Patagonia and Suja, as well as Lara Bars to munch on throughout the weekend. These donations helped create an even lower cost for the retreat which enabled us to donate over 50% of our profits to charity. We donated directly back to St Joseph’s Peninsula State Park as well as Cultivate Union, a charity for yoga education. We gave back to what gave to us. During our three day retreat we practiced land yoga on the beach, SUP yoga in the bay, beautiful story time by the fire, meditation on the beach at sunrise, stargazing and meditation under the New-moon at night, SUP adventures around the peninsula, a ceremonial fire celebration, and ate AMAZING yummy food. All under the umbrella theme of Ahimsa. Ahimsa is a principle term used in the yoga community that means non-violence. Non-violence to anything; nature, others, the Self, etc. We spoke of treating others and ourselves with compassion, grace, and understanding. We asked campers to recognize the vocabulary they use within their own thoughts and how they choose to speak
to themselves; to understand and practice Ahimsa in whatever medium they were able. This retreat was a surreal experience for me. I authentically feel as though all of the people, all of the support, all of the magic was deliberate. Everything fell into place with ease and positive, purposeful work. People felt impacted by their personal experience. Whether they were on adventures through the woods and on the water or reclined on the beach and resting in hammocks, people lived on this retreat. We existed in a sweet bubble of Ahimsa. We reveled in our personal power and abundant self-awareness. I cannot describe to you the visceral joy I feel by just stepping back into the memory of our celebratory fire ceremony. Or the comradery I felt during breakfast with fresh faces and stories about cushioned toilet seats. I will forever cherish the memory of this experience. I will forever have slots in my heart designated for each soul we shared space with on this trip. I will forever be humbly grateful to BOTE and Patagonia for their help. And I will never be able to thank the people who helped me create and facilitate this retreat adequately. So... let’s do it again!

Recently we lost one of the pioneers of our brand, Bob Brown, and his wife Meredith to a tragic car accident as they were headed on a family vacation. Bob was one of our Marketing Executives and was instrumental in bringing all of the images and videos to life through our web and digital environment. If you’ve witnessed any of our marketing content over the years, you can bet Bob was behind it. Bob would always joke and call himself “the robot” of BOTE, but he was much, much more than that. He was a mentor, a co-worker, a technician, a comedian, a husband, a friend, and a brother. BOTE wouldn’t be what it is today without Bob. As a family at BOTE, we mourn the loss of Bob and Meredith. They were two shiny souls who set the high-water mark for human greatness. They will both be sorely missed and never replaced. There was much more to Bob than work, too much to contain with words. But in short, Bob was BOTE...and BOTE is Bob. We miss you and love you both.
