The Travelink™ system was designed to get you to your paddling spot more easily and comfortably. By simply clicking in the Travelink™ adjustable carry strap to the latch points in the rail of the board, you remove all weight from your hands and carry the board more safely and ergonomically with your shoulders and back.
The Bucket Rac, a smaller version of the Tackle Rac. The Bucket Rac is designed to wrap around a standard five-gallon bucket or even better, a KULA cooler. Both are great for transporting bait, cast nets, gear and in the KULA’s case - beer and refreshments. This uniquely shaped accessory works perfectly in the front and rear tackle rac receivers on all of our Tackle Rac compatible boards, for securing your stuff and keeping your rods handy.
Another industry first for BOTE, the Tackle Rac effortlessly slides into our compatible boards transforming them into personal expedition and angling watercrafts. Providing 2 rod holders, gear pegs and countless attachment points for 3rd party accessories, the Tackle Rac will keep your gear high, dry and close at hand.
Located in the bow of the board, the Paddle Sheath™ provides paddlers with a convenient place to quickly store their paddle to free up hands for other activities. Once the blade of the paddle has been inserted into the Paddle Sheath™ slot, it can be infinitely adjusted to any left or right angle.
The convenience of having a place to “stash” your keys or hold your beer is undeniable. With the BOTE Stashpod, this special place now resides in your board. Watertight storage, an integrated bottle opener and a place for your favorite beverage; the Stashpod is the ultimate lifestyle addition.
Completely redesigned to be the most comfortable grab handle found on any paddle board. No more numb fingers or weak leverage while transporting your board.
The paddle strap is an integrated channel on the side of the board and accompanying bungee straps that allow for quick and easy storage of your paddle when not in use.
The “B”- logo texture is heat embossed, which is the process of heat stamping the grip texture directly onto the deck pad. This process seals the foam, eliminating water absorption, making the boards lighter and faster than with traditional deck pads. The texture also provides incredible grip and comfort.
Stakeout holes are integrated into select BOTE boards. These thruholes are openings from the deck through to the bottom of the board. By utilizing a “stake” into the mud or sand, your board can stay anchored in place. The stakeout holes can also be used to protect your board from theft by running a cable lock through the hole and securely locking.
Adjustable bungee straps allow quick and easy storage of extra gear and are available on most of our board models.
Conveniently located cooler tie downs allow you to strap a cooler (or anything really) to the deck of your board keeping things secure when waters get rough.
Connexsup is an accessory mounting system. Developed by the SUP think tank, Connexsup was inspired by the need for a simple solution to mounting accessories to the deck of a board. This is a universal mount that functions as an interface between the deck of a BOTE board and the ever expanding accessory market.

AN HD ADVENTURE
T
he BOTE team recently took a trip down south to visit lands inhabited by Florida’s most notorious residents… gators. We were invited to get up close and personal with these apex predators at our friend’s alligator farm located in the heart of Florida’s swampland. Paddle boards and alligator’s? We’re in. Located in Arcadia, FL, the gator farm is owned and operated by Robert and Robin Albritton of Black Water Leather Company. This couple have dedicated their lives to collecting eggs and managing alligators from numerous properties statewide. While the Albritton’s farm produces alligator meat and leathers for the global marketplace, the surprising result of their operation is that it has actually helped boost the alligator population in Florida. Working with biologists, the Albrittons spend countless hours scouring the swampland by helicopter searching for viable nesting sites. After careful evaluation and hours of paperwork, Robert and Robin are able to go out and collect eggs from the nesting sites. A caravan of trucks, airboats, paddle boards, and ATVs set out into wetlands for days at a time, collecting eggs, and camping in the woods until the job is done.

It’s common knowledge that alligator eggs and alligator hatchlings have natural predators and are a targeted food source by animals such as raccoons and bears. However, what most people don’t know is that their biggest enemy is, in fact, full-grown alligators. When Robert and Robin harvest eggs from a nesting site, they only retrieve 50% of the eggs, leaving the others behind to grow naturally. The result is that the survival rate of those left behind actually increases. How is this possible? Ultimately, by reducing the number of eggs from a particular region there are fewer hatchlings. Competition for food is reduced as well as the number of hatchlings that reach maturity in the wild. With fewer adult alligators around, a greater percentage of the next batch of eggs will hatch and grow. The final outcome is a healthier breeding operation and a lowered risk of livestock loss for local Florida ranchers. Eggs that are harvested are shuttled back to an incubator where they are kept in favorable conditions until they hatch and grow to harvest size. Once harvested, the skins go to tanneries and are made into fine leather goods. The meat is packaged at state licensed facilities and supplied to local restaurants and residents. It was awesome to get a glimpse into this seldom seen world of alligator farming, to get up close and personal with these awesome creatures and to see how our paddle boards are being used as part of a commercial operation. We left this trip with a whole new respect for the animal and the people that work with them on a daily basis. Enjoy the photos from our excursion. | www.boteboard.com/gatorville

T
he United States uses around 34 billion gallons of fresh water every day—whether that be for irrigation purposes or hydration, water is an eminent part of everyday life. However, in the past couple of years, there has been an influx of water problems all around the United States. Between the drought emergency in California, concerns over fracking and its effects on ground water, and the Oyster crisis in Apalachicola, Florida, there is no shortage of concern when it comes to our water. In an effort to raise money and awareness for a cause that affects us in such a large magnitude, BOTE, and SweetWater Brewing Company out of Atlanta, Georgia has teamed up again this year to help the Waterkeeper Alliance. The Waterkeeper Alliance is a non-profit company whose mission over the last 50 years is to defend their communities against anyone who threatens their right to clean water and to protect the world’s waterways.Today, theWaterkeeper Alliance is the world’s fastest growing environment movement, boasting over 270 Waterkeeper Organizations worldwide. BOTE Boards began working with SweetWater in 2012 and 2015, SweetWater asked BOTE to get on board with helping raise awareness for the Waterkeeper Alliance. To Corey Cooper, BOTE owner, and CEO, the partnership made perfect sense--BOTE makes paddle boards that are used on the water, SweetWater makes beer from the water, and the Waterkeeper Alliance strives to protect the water. It was clear that all three entities have a lot in common. And just like that, a collaborative platform was born. BOTE raised over $20,000 last year through local and national efforts with SweetWater’s “Save our Water” campaign, and we are extremely excited to help the cause again this year. Both of our industries, standup paddle boarding, and beer, depend on clean water. “Throughout the country, several of our retailers’ sales have been adversely affected by the health of their local water systems,” says Cooper. Since the end of last year’s campaign, BOTE and SweetWater have been working on a new collaboration to raise money and awareness for our waters. The focus of this year’s project is the ChattahoocheeApalachicola River which is being affected by man-made water restrictions and causing damaging effects

“Ultimately, this trip helped us understand that resources that seem so abundant, like Apalachicola oysters or fresh water, are often teetering on the edge of collapse for completely preventable reasons” - COREY COOPER / CEO BOTE BOARDS to the health of the Apalachicola Bay where some of the country’s most delicious oysters are harvested. The oysters that grow in this bay depend on the fresh water from the river to survive, and the oystermen and women who fish these waters, and their entire way of life, depend on healthy oyster beds. “In the last ten years, countless oyster men in Apalachicola have lost their jobs due to lack of clean water from the Apalachicola River -- a critical ingredient for growing some of the best tasting oysters in the United States,” says Cooper. In an effort to raise awareness for this cause, a small team from BOTE decided to paddle the Apalachicola River and get up close and personal with the controversy surrounding this important watershed. The team traveled three days and two nights spending every moment on the water to attempt to gain some insight of the environment and the vein that connects Georgia to Florida. Beginning at the Chattahoochee river basin, they paddled out to the dam locke to witness the water flow into BOTE’s native state. Staring at the booming water being shed from the locke, the crew realized how important this dam is to thousands of people as a source of fresh water, food, transportation and enjoyment. As they set forth downstream, camping on the banks, and paddling for the next couple of days, the realization of how eminent clean water is to everyday living had never been more apparent. “Ultimately, this trip helped us understand that resources that seem so abundant, like Apalachicola oysters or fresh water, are often teetering on the edge of collapse for completely preventable reasons,” says Cooper. | www.boteboard.com/abm-apalach

A RACKHAM ADVENTURE
T
hirty-six miles off the coast of Belize City, Belize lies a fly fisherman’s dream destination. Cayo Frances Farm and Fly is a small fly fishing camp located on the leeward side of Ambergris Caye that works with some of the best fishing guides on the island and is stacked with paddle boards and skiffs to explore the surrounding waters. It’s owner, Jeff Spiegel, was gracious enough to house the BOTE team for a couple of days and give them a preview of the camp and some epic spots on the Island. Jeff has not always been in the hospitality business—he started out running a punk rock record label, but after years of the hustle and bustle decided to move to Belize and teach himself how to be a chef. Now, having lived there for 14 years, Jeff decided it was time to open his own fly fishing camp and expose people to all the island has to offer. “Belize is incredibly unique—it’s a tiny country with a ton of diversity. In a place like Ambergris Caye, the windward side has the beaches, the reef, and is now a bustling tourist town. The leeward side, on the other hand, has nothing. It is completely concentrated on flats fishing— Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, and Snook—so I decided to make it the type of place that people visiting San Pedro can get away from town and fish with some of the best guides we have,” says Jeff.

Jeff has been building Cayo Frances Farm and Fly now for a year and a half. The farm itself is filled with the native Chaya plant and is situated on land that 1300 years ago, more people lived on than do presently, making it rich in history. “This is pretty much the last developed property until you hit Mexico. This camp is truly one of the most unique spots in the country,” explains Jeff. Not to mention the incredible food that is cooked for you throughout your stay! Steps away from the campsite is some of the clearest water you will ever see, filled with endless fly fishing possibilities. Depending on how skinny you want to get or how far you want to travel, Jeff has the camp equipped with multiple BOTE boards and skiffs to take out.“Nothing is going to give you more freedom and better access to the waters than paddle boards,” says Jeff. The BOTE team found it efficient for long distance trips, to trail a board behind the skiff, getting you out farther, but enabling you to explore skinnier and more concealed waters. With the help of Jeff’s fishing guides, our team visited some of the best fishing spots Belize had to offer and did not ever leave empty handed. “The fishery here is world class, but it is not easy—there are probably few places as rewarding to fish,” explains Jeff. After spending a week with Jeff, our team was sold on living the small island life and could not wait to visit Belize again. Corey Cooper, BOTE owner, and CEO, states, “Although the town of San Pedro is an amazing spot to see, filled with authentic foods, locals, and buildings, nothing compares to the camp, team, and fishing that Jeff has going on at Cayo Frances.”

NEVER QUIT TO MOST, PADDLING EVERY DAY THROUGH GRUELING WINDS AND WAVES OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR MONTHS, 3,500 MILES FROM TEXAS TO NEW YORK, SOUNDS LIKE A DEATH WISH. TO JOSH COLLINS, IT SOUNDS LIKE A NEW BEGINNING.
Part 1. Josh is a Special Operations combat Veteran with multiple rotations to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia, along with numerous other deployments around the globe in support of the War on Terror. Moreover, Josh is a wounded warrior with seven documented traumatic brain injuries (TBI) with loss of consciousness - four from explosive blasts, two by parachute landing falls, and one more from combative training. After he retired in December of 2008, Josh continued to support the military as a contractor both stateside and abroad. It was during an elite Special Operations training exercise in 2013 that he sustained another major concussion, complete with fractured nose, ribs, and cervical spine compression, putting him over the edge. “I couldn’t function through the day without extreme headaches, fatigue, and disorientation. I never had problems psychologically until I had problems with my head from the TBI’s. It’s like this: If a record is skipping, it could be that it is scratched (PTSD), or that the record player itself has a broken/cracked needle (TBI). The combination of TBI and PTSD exacerbates both issues. The VA has a much easier time diagnosing PTSD because the environment and horrors of combat are undeniable, but unlike TBI, they can medicate and call it a day. This is why I began to ‘self-medicate’ heavily with alcohol until I was up to well beyond a bottle of hard liquor a day.” This deathly combination of prescribed meds and alcohol not only tore his family and marriage apart, but it completely turned Josh into a different person.“I did not know my husband anymore,” his wife Tonia stated.“So I did everything I could to bring him and our family back to what we were, and that’s when I found the Task Force Dagger Foundation (TFDF).”

A T R AV E L L E R A DV E N T U R E
Task Force Dagger Foundation is a United States Army Special Operations Command based organization dedicated to providing assistance to all wounded, ill, or injured members and their families. Established in 2009, TFDF is a federally recognized non-profit foundation that supplies emergency funding to those SOCOM service members and their families who cannot afford the proper care. With their help, Josh was immediately taken to the James A Haley VA Polytrauma Unit in Tampa, FL where he underwent TBI therapy and after three months, was returned to his family where he was able to rebuild his marriage and life. Although Josh was beginning to reconstruct the foundation of his former life, he was still suffering from severe inner ear (vestibular) damage, right eye nerve palsy, and vertigo from a compressed cervical spine at two levels. After receiving more than a dozen surgeries to correct some of these problems,Tonia purchased Josh a stand-up paddleboard in hopes of getting him exercising again. However, Josh quickly found that it helped with more than just his physical fitness. In Josh’s own words, “Standup paddle boarding brought balance back to my life.” Finding solace on the water was a huge achievement for Josh, but he was surprised at how simple of an idea it was that paddle boarding could so easily help his TBI. “When I’m on the water, everything around me stops moving. The horizon holds still because of the subtle movements of the water. It is my sanctuary.” Having departed for many missions in the military, Josh knew he would be departing for one of the most important missions of his civilian life—helping other veterans in need. More than twenty two veterans a day are taking their lives, and this now accounts for more than ten times the number of casualties overseas due to lack of help and over prescribing meds for TBI and PTSD. In an effort to raise awareness of these statistics and help raise money for the foundation that helped save Josh’s life, he came up with a plan to make the longest journey ever paddled. Josh knew this was a huge endeavor and that he would need all the help that he could get. In hopes of finding a standup paddle board company to support his cause, he reached out to BOTE in Fort Walton Beach, FL.“We do everything we can to help our military locally,” says Corey Cooper / BOTE Owner and CEO, “When Josh approached us with his idea seeking a partnership and support, we instantly knew this was something we wanted to be a part of.” After multiple phone conversations with BOTE’s team to discuss board ideas, Josh told his story and everything he went through to re-gain his life, and just like that, Operation Phoenix was born. “We were talking about board designs and how we would like this board to inspire people from all walks of life, when it hit us—The Phoenix rises from the ashes and is stronger than it was before—which is exactly what Josh has done,” states Cooper. To make the process even more interesting, a few days after having asked their Creative Director, Rob McAbee, to create a logo with the phoenix, he returned with an addition that had not been talked about previously. “I’ve also added a little something to the bottom,” said Rob. “‘Noli Desiste’ it means ‘Never Quit,’ ” to which Josh quickly replied with a picture of a tattoo on his arm also transcribing “Never Quit.” Cooper exclaimed, “Every single one of us had chills in that moment that we received the picture of Josh’s tattoo. We knew this was going to be bigger than us.” For the next couple of months, Josh and BOTE worked together to make the boards and prepare for Josh’s expedition that would now be noted as “OPPHX.”
68
The expedition entails a four month long paddle beginning in March from Corpus Christi,TX to New York City, NY with rallies being held along the way. “I want to bring the military families and their surrounding communities together to get them out on boards and raise money for TFDF. BOTE will not only be supplying limited edition ‘Operation Phoenix’ (OPPHX) boards for Josh to take on his four month long paddle, but they will also be supplying the same limited edition boards to be raffled off at the rallies and sold on their website alongside other OPPHX apparel and accessories.A portion of the profit for all OPPHX sales from BOTE will be given to the TFDF.
“I have not quit anything thus far in my life and I’m not looking to start now.” Although Josh will be making this voyage on his own, his hope is that at these rallies, with the support of local SUP companies, people will get out there and join his journey, even if it’s just for a mile. “People don’t realize that anyone can paddle, even if you’ve never stepped foot on a paddle board before. Nothing would make me happier than to see paddling helping other’s with TBI and PTSD too.” When asking Tonia how she feels about the trip she says,“Of course I am worried about Josh—there will be some days that he will be paddling in twenty mile per hour winds and white capping waves— but seeing the passion and purpose that he feels for this cause on a daily basis shows me that this is what he is supposed to be doing.” Success is something that most would find hard to define with this mission—there are many factors that can affect Josh arriving to his final destination—but for Josh “Success for me doesn’t mean making it to New York. Success is raising enough money to save more lives. Even just one life would make this all worth it. But I have not quit anything thus far in my life and I’m not looking to start now.”
TRAVELING THE WHOLE GULF COAST AND EAST COAST ALL AT ONCE WAS LIKE READING A GREAT NOVEL AND THE SEQUEL ALL IN ONE SITTING..
Part 11. THE TOUGHEST STRETCH VA Beach to DC which was 201 miles in 4 days (38,38,55,70 miles respectively), and upstream against the Chesapeake and then the Potomac. The final 70 miles I was delirious until collapsing on a beach landing training site on Quantico. I slept from 0400-0530am and woke up next to a dead Pelican corpse. I drank the last of my water and ate my final sandwich and continued on another 6 hours until a boat found me on the Potomac closing in on DC and gave me water. IRONICALLY, this can be the toughest stretch for any Veteran, and that is in getting the help and care they need out of DC, the government. Instead, it is our citizens who take the greatest care for their soldiers and Veterans, and it’s always been that way.
THE HARDEST The first 45 days – Mentally and physically exhausting as I pushed the limits, and found new breakthroughs. Both my body and mind adapted. I believe the extreme conditions pushed my brain to develop new neuro pathways and healing in the same way that my body adapted to the extreme physical demands of paddling 30-40 and as far as 60 and 70 miles in a single day. The greatest test of this was the 24-hour distance record attempt across Florida bay to Key West (110 miles) on Day 50. Learning to live with Nature – There were many areas that I paddled through at “Pucker Factor 9”.All of the Gulf Coast river ways, bayous, swamps, and ICWs were chock full of Gators who would charge into the water once startled. The West Coast Florida bays had plenty of sharks, and there were always bumps in the night! I minimized my time camping to the “Bear” minimum. The open water bays – I was beached by the wind and storms on 2 bays (Corpus Christie and Pamlico Sound) and pulled out of 2 by safety boat (Apalachicola and Florida Bay). The first time in Corpus Christie on the 1st 3 days made me wonder if I was sane in attempting this along the Gulf Coast. Corpus Christie Bay is where the 2016 wind surfing National championships took place in May this year. The Coast Guard called me off the water early on day 3 when Gale Force winds hit the Bay and after I was blown to shore.
THE BEST The people – All the new friends. Every step of the way I was greeted on the water by supporters, and who quickly became friends. I heard this question so often, “Is there anything you need today?” I quickly began thinking that if the 330M US citizens reached out to the 24 M Vets and asked them this question just once a month, then every Vet in America would be supported in this way every other day! Also, a sense of being uncared for is the common denominator in most suicide notes. This would solve the problem. BOTEBOARD.COM

The awareness and Resources Raised – I was hoping that if People see if I can step out and deal with this then they can also. Hope. foothold we have made in awareness, and then resourcing assistance for other Special Operations Vets (many who are still active and fighting these wars) for TBI and PTSD.The current system is broken and simply rout with the over-prescription of drugs. There are much better ways. Medicine is a practice, but that doesn’t negate the “Do no harm” oath. I think it is clear that prescriptions drugs are causing harm as the currently over administered. Me – how much greater understanding I now have of my limitations and boundaries with TBI, and just how to continue to make improvements in my cognitive function. I found magic out there on the water, and it changed how I see everything. Tonia – And, as if I needed a reminder in Just how incredibly my beautiful wife Tonia truly is.Who would do what she does in caring for and supporting me. No one may ever know just how tough it was on the road for 5 months and living out of a 240 sf RV and never sleeping the place each night. Most mornings as I would leave, she would still be trying to figure out where we’d be staying next. Sometimes it was a Walmart, but sometimes it was a boat ramp or under a bridge somewhere. She is simply amazing. THE WORST The physical pain and exhaustion – and especially the first 45 days of breakdown and adapting to the intense physical load of paddling 8-14 hours every day. After that, there were 2 more distinct and short periods of extreme fatigue that I had to work through. I would rest as best I could and attempt to manage my pace to back off a little. Unfortunately, the seas and weather get a vote, and most often wouldn’t cooperate with my “Easy” day plan. These were some of the worst days of suffering in my life. The sea can be mercilessly unrelenting. She just doesn’t care, and she changes her attitude without warning. If you don’t have a healthy fear, then it’s easy to wind up just another statistic. Being eaten alive – The bugs. The mosquitos in the Gulf, and the biting flies (especially the Greenheads) on the East Coast.
•
[As a survivor,] my mission is to encourage and inspire other vets – especially those who are facing down the challenge of living with and adapting to TBIs and PTSD.
•
I want these vets to know that there are alternative forms of treatment out there, and groups like Task Force Dagger are there for them and their families.
•
To hell with the stigmas. People need to be aware that our [vets’] missions continue here at home – recovery is perhaps one of the hardest parts of job. Spreading awareness of the challenges we deal with day in and day out – and how hard we and our families work to beat those challenges down – is critical.
•
To the vets reading this: the only person stopping you is you. Never be afraid to lean on your families, lean on your friends, and lean on folks who want to help that’s where Task Force Dagger comes in.Their mission is to help you – wounded or ill – and to be there for your wives, husbands, children and parents.
The fear of failure – I put myself out there publicly to accomplish this mission, but more important than my personal pride was in letting down the hundreds, and then thousands of Vets, or family members of vets who began contacting me to tell me how this was inspiring them, etc….There was a moment of extreme fatigue at near the 40th day that I thought might have been the end. Searching for inspiration, I actually began to see the faces of soldiers and friends in the water from the past as I paddled who hadn’t made it, and that this was the most compelling reason for me to continue.
NOW AND WHAT IS NEXT? Results count. I grew up with this mandate from my mom. Ill continue this fight. We have a long way to go with regard to treatment for TBI.As one who has survived the melee, from multiple Mild TBIs, a host of related brain disorder diagnosis, and most significantly from being over medicated to the point of wanting to end it all, I am here now to advocate for others in their mission of recovery. Recovery from TBI and PTSD needs to be made first without the meds. There is a place for prescription drugs, but right now they are frontline whereas they should be a secondary treatment after all other therapies have been exhausted. After all, with the vet suicide rate what it is, the obvious failure of the current system of treatment, why would anyone prescribe medications with contraindications of suicidal ideation to someone who is already potentially suicidal? | www.boteboard.com/opphx

A GRAMBLER ADVENTURE
Words by
T
he first day I met Tim Blumh the rain was falling in buckets. Tim is a musician, surfer, traveler and an old California soul. He is the lead singer in the band, The Mother Hips, and also plays in his wife’s band, Nicki Blumh and the Gramblers. Once the rain subsided, both bands formed into one to give Fernandina Beach an epic musical performance. Over the next few days, Tim and I surfed and discussed SUPs and his newly found interest in the sport. What came of these talks was a collaboration between BOTE boards and the Gramblers - a paddle board that had the DNA of a traditional surf longboard. The BOTE Grambler was born. Corey Cooper–owner and lead board designer for BOTE– and I spent the next few months working out the details of the Grambler, both in performance and aesthetics. What came out of the endless hours of conversation, prototyping and surf sessions–which I call “research”–was a board that will fill a transitional gap; A board that will surf soulfully in small to medium surf and also be able to move seamlessly into flat water recreational paddling. With the design, shape and graphics package put to bed, we eagerly awaited the final product. In the meantime, a plan was beginning to formulate on how to deliver the first production Grambler to it’s namesake. Every year a music event called the Hipnic goes down in one of the most beautiful and scenic areas in the United States - Big Sur, California. My buddy and music aficionado, Ody Anderson planted an idea to hand deliver the Grambler to Tim, Nicki
Rob McAbee
and the Gramblers in Big Sur at their signature music festival! I was sold and The Grambler - Out For Delivery / PCH road trip was conceived. I was pretty stoked to say the least. The planning of a surf trip is one of those things in life that ranks up there with a kid’s anticipation of Christmas morning. This trip was no exception and the gear lists, the online recon for camping and surf spots, and all the traveling arrangements were made with the same excitement of ripping into those special gifts from Santa. The first person I contacted for road-trip advice was Sean Murphy. Sean is a world renowned photographer, surfer, and LA local. He became our host and guide and would document the trip with the insane imagery you now see on these pages. Ody Anderson was next to be added to the crew, not only for his hand in concepting this outing, but to add the positive vibe all road trips need. Shane Reynolds, videographer and all around ripper and media bad ass, rounded out our little band of misfits. The day of our trip finally arrived. As we taxied down the runway on our way from east coast to west coast a phrase popped into my head that would define this trip (and be one of the hashtags for our Instagram posts) #eastcoaststylewestcoastsoul - perfect. Sean picked us up from LAX in a large blacked out truck that looked more like a SWAT truck than a daily driver–a BOTE vehicle if there ever was one. We loaded our gear and headed out into the City of Angels to take a look around.

This was my first trip to central California and I wanted to make the most of our short time. After a quick detour to see surf legend Bruno Troadec and acquire one of his Breed single fins, we checked out Venice Beach, Malibu and a few other surf spots looking for some decent waves to wash off the air miles and get acquainted with the west coast waters. Coming from Florida, the first and most obvious difference is the water temperature. Hell, we had been out of wetsuits for a good six weeks and California was just catching her breath after a super solid south swell that had given birth to some kind of freak cold water upwelling. With the water hovering around 50 degrees, it took our breath away. This was in no way Kana Beach. I opted to swim out and do some bodysurfing using the BOTE Jackknife (hand plane) and Shane made a brief paddle out on his shortboard. After a solid few hours of fun waves and a somewhat regulated body temperature, we called it and headed back to the valley for authentic Mexican food and a few cold beers. With the truck and trailer loaded down with camping gear, SUPs, and as much liquid sustenance to last us a day or two, we headed north on the 1 towards our first way point, Morro Bay.We looked for places of interest along our route and decided against visiting the Neverland Ranch and opted instead to drive through the small community of Guadalupe looking for the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. This area has been the setting for several films, including Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 Ten Commandments and scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Figured it might be cool to see (and maybe try some sand boarding?). Not so much, unless you like restriction signs that don’t allow you to leave the concrete. In retrospect, maybe the creepy Neverland Ranch would have been a better choice. We continued north. As quail scurried out of our path, we pulled into our campsite in Montana del Oro State Park where Tim and a friend, Bill Quirk, were there to greet us with a smile. Ever the adventurer, Sean
82
whipped out his blow gun to test his marksmanship on some of the aforementioned birds. Tim and Bill’s smile quickly faded into disbelieving frowns. Once Sean was educated on the status of quail in California (State Bird), we took turns firing on a small plastic dinosaur, not as tasty as quail, but far less expensive in the long run. Tents were pitched, hammocks were hung, and fire gazing commenced as we all retired early with the anticipation of a dawn patrol the next morning. One thing I have realized as I creep toward the half century mark is that when it comes to sleeping on the ground, I suck at it. I would rather be rolled down a hill in a tire and pecked by a flock of quail than endure the stiffness and pain from a restless night “sleeping” on the ground. There is no better way to shake off a little joint pain than to jump in the ocean and slide down some waves.
Once Sean was educated on the status of quail in California (State Bird), we took turns firing on a small plastic dinosaur The next morning everyone was stoked to get out and surf. Of course, Tim had dibs on the Grambler…delivering it to Tim was the reason we had made this journey in the first place. We loaded the boards and headed to a spot called Sandspit just south of Morro Rock. It was a fun head high wave and we all spent hours trading boards and loving the way the Grambler flew down the line, was able to be cross stepped, and performed with soul. Our crew had a broad mix of surfing experience and the Grambler allowed everyone from near beginner to experienced long boarders to have a blast.

"What could have turned out to be a complete nightmare turned out to be a killer week with unlimited cool shit happening non-stop. Boards flew off cars, minimal equipment was ruined, lots of farts, a near beat down from locals at one of the surf spots (who knew SUPs and cameras were unwelcome!??), blow darts, humpbacks, hippies, human feces, freezing water, and a ton of laughs. It was rad...but it was no Kana Beach." - SEAN MURPHY

That evening we hiked out on the cliffs to catch the incredible sunset that only the Pacific can offer. Not only did we get a sunset that would have rivaled any painters wildest palette but also spotted a chunky right hand break down below. After watching two lone surfers catch wave after wave, we knew we had to check this out first thing the next day. As another dawn cracked, the expectations were high. Out of the parking lot, Sean took the high trail to shoot from a killer vantage and the rest of us took the low trail to the break. With one guy out and another giving us a strange look, we jumped off the rocks and started our paddle out to the point. Being the only one on an SUP and understanding that localism still exists, I figured I had a target on my back. We all stayed off the peak initially to get our bearings and show a little respect to the other guy already in the line-up. I glanced in towards the shore and noticed “stink-eye” hard charging right for me. “Here we go”, I thought, and braced for what would hopefully be only a verbal encounter. To my surprise, he paddled right past me and gave Shane (and his GoPro) a less than warm CA welcome and a run down of all the “local” rules we were breaking - cameras evidently being very high on that list. I believe had they known Sean was high up on the cliff shooting frame after frame, their heads would have exploded. Even though the local cold shoulder was chillier than the water, we all managed to surf some epic beefy swell and left the Dukes to guard their gem.
subsided, everyone sat around the fire and talked about how cool it was to merge cultures (surf & music) that people have such an emotional connection to, together, with something as simple as an SUP surf board.
I GLANCED IN TOWARDS THE SHORE AND NOTICED "STINK-EYE" HARD CHARGING RIGHT FOR ME This was a music festival after all, and it was time for the band to play. Day gave in to night and the rest of the evening was filled with great music and dancing, old and new friends, and a brand new board–the Grambler– resting easily under the California moon. As we sat there, listening to the music, Ody leans over to me and says “We ought to do this trip again next year.” I ’m way ahead of you buddy. Way ahead. Gramble on. | www.boteboard.com/out-for-delivery
The drive north on the PCH is one that everyone should have on their bucket-list. If the PCH is the main artery of scenic CA, then Big Sur is the heart. We arrived at Fernwood campground in Big Sur, the site of the Hipnic, to find a super chill crowd of music fans, hippies and good vibes. This was the time and place we had planned, designed and traveled to be a part of. The culmination of surf and music lifestyle–and the Grambler–was at the center. With Tim already having surfed the Grambler, we still had to unveil and present the board “officially.” With a fire in the pit and guitars throwing tunes in the air, we introduced the board to Tim, Nicki and the Gramblers. After the oohs and aahs

“THE BREEZE IS MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE DO-ALL BOARD. IT HAS SO MANY APPLICATIONS AND YOU CAN TAKE IT ANYWHERE. WHETHER I’M ROLLING IT UP AND THROWING IT ON A PLANE TO THE TROPICS TO CHASE BONEFISH OR STASHING IT IN MY SKIFF TO SLIP UP ON INACCESSIBLE REDS, IT DOES THE TRICK EVERY TIME.” LACEY KELLY / BOTE AMBASSADOR

AN AEROBOTE ADVENTURE
FLOWING FROM WYOMING TO COLORADO, THE GREEN RIVER IS A 730-MILE WINDING WATERSHED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WESTERN WILDERNESS. WHITE WATER RAPIDS AND RIPPING WINDS ARE NOT UNCOMMON ON THE GREEN, MAKING YOUR WATERCRAFT ONE OF YOUR MOST IMPORTANT PIECES OF GEAR.
WORDS AND PHOTOS BY SEAN MURPHY
Until this epic trip, I didn’t know much about Utah except there was a big Mormon community and there was some cool shit to do in Moab. I’m also not a big fly fisherman. That said I wasn’t exactly sure what was about go down during this three-day float trip on the Green River with two guys I’d never met… on paddle boards … with rapids. The lineup was me, a rad video guy named Cavin, Rob McAbee from BOTE, Ian Provo (Bad ass mountaineer, fly fisherman and photographer), and his good buddy Shane who is an insane fly fisherman and local guide. Oh, and my girl Raphye who never really paddled before got thrown into the mix last minute because we were already on a road trip when this gig came in. The trip, like all of our trips, was unpredictable. The fishing was hard for the fly fisherman, but I, on the other hand, was killing it with my spinning gear. I know I know, that’s cheating. Fuck it; I like to catch fish, not impress them. The landscape was insane, and the company was exceptional. One of my favorite things was that Ian and Shane would pull over every thirty minutes to have a smoke and just enjoy the moment. I would hear them say cool shit like “Imagine how many things this tree has been through in it’s lifetime,” or “I could totally see Indian standing on that cliff.” It was nice to be around people who aren’t so stressed out and in a rush that truly enjoy just “being in the moment.” BOTEBOARD.COM

“It was intimidating. Being the first trip down any river with rapids on a paddle board, yeah it was a bit sketchy” Although it was a treat going downstream in a current, there were many challenges. There was a gnarly headwind that when mixed with the currents would flip boards like they were feathers. Rob, unfortunately, took a couple of good beatings and also broke all of his fly rods by the third day. Raphye kept getting stuck in back eddies and would be on the verge of mental collapse. I lost my fin in the first five minutes of our trip and just spun around in circles the entire time on a God Damn fourteen foot board carrying a couple of hundred pounds of gear. When the rapids were too gnarly, the fins would have to be taken out of the boards, and we’d hump everything on land until it was calmer. Cavin and Shane, in rafts, would charge through the rapids without worry. I’d like to mention that there were wildfires going on in various spots and helicopters were banging around picking up tons of water from the river to drop on them. There was a lot of shit going on.
- ROB MCABEE / CREATIVE DIRECTOR BOTE BOARDS
On the third day, we were all just looking for the pull-out spot.We didn’t know exactly where it was or if our cars would be there. See, we paid people we’d never met before to drive our vehicles to our pull-out spot and have them waiting for us.You heard me; we trusted total strangers to not steal our only rides home or just wreck them and leave them in the desert somewhere … like ya do. Anyway, it worked. We found the pullout spot; our trucks were there, and we went and ate cheeseburgers – A much-welcomed meal after such an epic journey. We were all super stoked, and I was especially proud of Raphye for making the trek, never complaining, and not dying. On top of the shit I already knew about Utah (Mormons and Moab), I also now know there’s a small group of kick ass people who inspired me to live in the moment along one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. | www.boteboard.com/westernflow
