In this paper Both ENDS and our partners from South Africa, Colombia and Indonesia examine the social and environmental impacts of coal mining. These countries are the major sources of coal used in the Dutch energy sector. Coal mining causes amongst others large scale deforestation, acid mine drainage which pollutes fresh water sources and (forced) displacement of communities.
The findings of this report have already been picked up by the media and the Dutch parliament. Together with our partners, Both ENDS is now engaged in a dialogue with Dutch energy companies, the mining industry, labour unions and other NGOs, in an attempt to improve the conditions of people working in, and living around, coal mines.
