Chair, Canadian Angus Foundation
Welcome to Building the Legacy 7! The vision of the Building the Legacy concept was to allow the Foundation to build monetarily. With the prosperity of the Foundation, it in turn would use the funds to provide opportunities for our youth, young breeders and membership to grow in the areas of leadership, marketing, networking, husbandry, genetic improvement and to learn about developing tools to enhance Angus production. The vision also includes the importance of preserving our Angus history. By fostering these areas it was felt we would ensure our Angus history is not lost and we would keep Angus as the breed of choice for the commercial beef sector and the end users for years to come. The vision is being realized and we have been able to support initiatives, scholarships, travel bursaries and learning opportunities. Through your benevolent giving of donated livestock, semen, embryos, items and experiences and the purchasing of the auction offerings, we at the Foundation have been able to put together a great suite of opportunities for our Angus membership. Thank you to the dedicated team who has worked throughout the year to bring you the 2018 offering of the “Legacy Sale”. We also extend a humble thank you to all of the past and present donors and those who have purchased items over the past years and/or plan to support Building the Legacy. Thank you to the BC Angus Association for their dedication and planning of this Canadian Angus Convention in Comox and providing the Canadian Angus Foundation with an opportunity to once again host the Building the Legacy fundraiser auction. “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams

Canadian Angus Foundation
Welcome to the Canadian Angus Foundation’s Building the Legacy fundraiser auction 7. The Foundation is something that as a Canadian Angus member I am very proud of. The Foundation has provided support and opportunities for many outstanding Junior members since its creation. Throughout my time on the Foundation board, I have had the privilege to judge some of the applicants for some of the awards given and have always been extremely impressed by our Junior members. The passion they have for the Canadian Angus Association and agriculture industry is amazing, and I am glad that we can support these individuals through the Foundation. None of this would be possible without the support of breeders and industry partners. Your generous donations are helping many young people achieve their goals and make an impact in the agriculture industry. Our youth are our future and the dedication and support given not only by those who donate but also the buyers, sales staff, and all of those involved, will ensure their continued success. Thank you and I hope to see you in Comox.
Brett Wildman
President, Canadian Angus Association
Welcome to your “Building the Legacy 7” fundraiser auction sale. This event, through its donors, bidders and buyers, is a true testament to the generosity of Angus breeders that ensures the future of our Canadian Angus Foundation and its objectives. “BtL” has grown to become an annual Canadian Angus highlight as it supports our membership on the whole through our Junior program, research and development, member education and preserving our rich Canadian Angus history. I must express great appreciation to our Foundation Board and our staff for their dedication and commitment to ensure the success of this fundraiser and its impact on our future. Please enjoy this sale catalogue and its offerings, recognizing the great generosity and commitment of every donor and consider how you can contribute to YOUR Canadian Angus Foundation. I think the donations represent “the BEST of the BEST” and the only way to make it even better is by YOU participating! Thank you very much.

Crescent Creek
Your pick of Crescent Creek Angus’ entire 2018-born heifer calves From one of Canada’s Heritage Angus herds, you get your choice of their entire 2018 heifer calf crop! This is one of those rare opportunities that come around as rarely as finding gold on a fishing trip. To celebrate their 65th anniversary with Angus cattle (purebreds came a few years later), the Olynyk family, one of our Canadian Angus ‘royal’ families—awarded their 50-Year Heritage Award in 2005—are giving you a ‘chance of a lifetime’!
Rosebud 115F
From Wes: “We find it an exciting opportunity to get a chance to select from the heart of a program known for strong cow families. The strength of our program does not revolve around AI sires but rather strong walking bulls representing prolific cow families. We believe the strength of many herds is the result of such walking bulls. Our program offers outcross pedigrees that could very well be valuable in establishing the next great one. The offering is the culmination of 65 years of breeding purebred Angus cattle. The traits this maternal breed is known for have led to our breeding philosophy.” Terms The choice of any WOS or DTZ tattoo (does not include our kids’ tattoos) calendar year heifer calf. Choice to be made by October 1, 2018, preferably on a warm fall day, so one can enjoy a steak supper and refreshments. This year’s selection will be from one of the largest heifer offerings we’ve ever had. Popular AI bulls include: • MAR Innovation 251 • EF Commando 1366 • PA Fortitude 2500 • HA Counselor 5118
Vintage AI sires:
• LT Bandwagon 3105 • OGL Battlecry 427
Queen Ruth 14W
Popular walking bulls:
• Chapman Memento 3589 • HA Outside 5161, who is a paternal brother to HA Cowboy Up • Crescent Creek Entrepreneur 105A, a Rito 707 grandson • Crescent Creek Fortune 169C, a Stevenson Fortune 425C grandson • Crescent Creek Alternative 516, SITZ Alliance 6595 grandson • S McCoy 373 • Canadian-sired Fleury Bardolene 115B
Whether you are a brand new breeder who wants to capitalize on one of our nation’s strongest programs for genetic leadership, an established program wanting to acquire a long soughtafter cow family, or perhaps even a ‘retired’ cattleman or woman who wants to support our Foundation but don’t prefer to manage a great female yourself, Crescent Creek offers to keep the female at the farm free of charge for the duration of her life. All resulting offspring will be revenue shared at 50% with no expense to the buyer. Even if she lives to be 20, Wes and family will look after her for you. You can visit her whenever you like, come to the bull and female sale every spring to watch her calf sell, and collect your 50% share of the revenue her offspring raises. Canadian Angus is so honoured and thrilled that the Olynyk family is making this donation. In Canadian Angus history, the Crescent Creek prefix has adorned the very best females our breed has on offer, decade after decade. When you consider the extraordinary genetic foundation in the pedigrees of this cow herd, this donation lets you invest in a foundation female that will take your program “to the next level”.

Redrich
One of our bedrock principles is to never ask an Angus producer with Junior-aged children for a ‘Pickof-the-Herd Heifer Calf’ donation. Since these Juniors want to be competitive, I believe they want to pick ‘the best’ from their families’ herd. But I am learning that the benevolence of our members, and their commitment to our Canadian Angus Foundation, supersedes their remaining Juniors getting to pick ‘the best’. Last year, the Liebreich family offered that their ‘FIRST PICK’ be a Foundation donation and this year, the Dietrich family of Redrich Farms at Forestburg, AB is doing the very same. The Dietrich family is one of our nation’s most active, talented and committed Angus breeders. Every year their herd gets stronger with a focus on performance and growth while never losing sight of the value of the Angus Cow. With a hallmark bull like Red Wilbar Longitude 646Y (2013 National Champion (Farmfair), Agribition Champion; RBC Supreme Champion (Agribition); Angus.net World Champion Angus Bull; Red Angus Show Bull of the Year) having such a profound impact in their herd, siring another breed-leader in Red Redrich Aftershock 238A (2015 National & Supreme Champion (Lloydminster); Olds Champion; Farmfair Supreme Champion; Agribition Champion & RBC Supreme Top 10 Finalist; Angus.net World Champion Angus Bull; Red Angus Show Bull of the Year), the Redrich program just keeps getting better and better.

Here you will see some of the maternal mavens from which daughters can be selected. Please make the selection before August 15th to allow Lexi to have her pick for 4-H, plus Redrich often consigns to sales like Red Round-Up and Northern Select. And maybe don’t select on Saturday, July 28th. That is a very big day for the Dietrich family as Shania officially becomes one of them as Ty brings a special young lady into the Redrich fold. And don’t be surprised if Mama T has to quickly depart if you’re there anytime in July because the eldest Dietrich progeny, Katelyn, and husband Ryan are expecting the FIRST next-generation for Redrich.

Your pick of Harvest Angus’ entire 2018-born calf crop, OR a ‘Pick-of-the-Herd’ flush Harvest Angus of Prince George, BC is a 15-year-old Black Angus operation run by BC Angus Association President Tom deWaal. Harvest Angus has grown to more than 250 head. Tom has graciously donated the buyer’s pick of ALL 2018-born, non-embryo calves including bulls! The buyer’s pick will have been bred by Tom himself. That may seem like an odd thing to promote, but that’s indicative of Tom’s level of commitment to his customers: he always keeps a few bulls back in his herd and feeds them until they are two-year-olds just in case a customer gets into a jam. He is committed to having a replacement option available for his customers to ensure their satisfaction. That, folks, is dedication and commitment!
Blackbird 145P
You may be familiar with some of Harvest Angus’ standout animals like MICH Envious Blackbird 907W and 2013 Canadian Angus Gold Show All-Star Heifer Calf Champion Harvest Blackbird Lisa 5A. Or how about the cow that Tom describes as the “Queen of Harvest Angus”, HF Blackbird 145P, the 2006 Agribition Supreme Champion? She continues to breed and her daughters and granddaughters are prominent throughout the Harvest Angus herd. Three of her calves have become Canadian Angus Association All Stars—Harvest R Blackbird 3Y, Harvest Tinge 5Y and Harvest Custom Crome 2Y. The Moon family—Jim and Shirley and Tom and Charlotte—are offering you the opportunity to select from their 2018 born Red Angus heifer calves. Red Moon’s heifers are sired by Red Moon Dragon Slayer 10D, Red 3J One of a Kind A228, Red Ringstead Kargo 215U, Red Bieber Roosevelt W384, Red Wilbar Double Deuce 158D and Red Nine Mile Cogan 24C. The Moon’s focus on calving ease, structure, maternal traits, moderate frames, muscle and performance. This focus has created many repeat bull buyers in the province of British Columbia. They change their walking sires every two years to ensure fresh genetics for their customers and in-herd replacements. The farm is located in the central interior of British Columbia with a home town of Vanderhoof. The Moons are the typical rural Canadian family: they take their cattle and their ice hockey seriously. They are a family farm raising functional and sound Red Angus cattle, with particular attention applied to feet, legs and structure in the herd. The Red Moon herd of breeding females are selected for their strong maternal strengths. They use both AI and walking bulls, always searching for the best sires to complement their females.
Moon 38D
We so appreciate the kindness and generosity of the Moon family for making a historic donation of a ‘Pick-of-the-Herd’ to our Canadian Angus Foundation! Their 2018 heifer calves are available for your selection and choosing anytime. They would appreciate it if you could have your decision made by August 1st, as they will be picking their females for the Shade of Autumn sale. PAK 123F - THE calf. Very eye appealing calf that patterns out much like the females in her lineage. Pictured at a month and a half of age and already has the look of a top producing Angus female. This calf is the fifth generation of this female line, with all five generations born and raised in the Speller herd, showing the longevity, consistency, and overall quality these females produce.
PAK Rosebud 75A - Dam of 123F. Carries the soundness and Angus breed characteristics of her dam and granddam. An up and coming five year old cow in our herd, and she has already produced heifer calves that have been sold into purebred herds.
BBT 7D - Sire of PAK 123F. A tremendously long bodied, strong topped bull with excellent feet. This bull is loaded with performance. He is pictured here as a two year old at 2,100 lbs. after being used as a yearling.
PAK 54S - Granddam of PAK 123F on the maternal side—one of the top cows in our herd. Tremendously sound cow that has produced multiple herdsires working on purebred operations. Pictured at seven years of age.
SAD 9G - Great-granddam of PAK 123F on the maternal side. In herd for 16 years and pictured at 13 years of age.
Sealin Creek Ranch is owned and operated by Dan and Janette Speller and family, and is located at Monte Lake, BC. They run approximately 180 head of Black Angus cows, with a strong focus on straight Canadian genetics, which makes their herd incredibly unique. The herd runs on a large, very rugged mountain range in the summer, where they must be able to travel long distances. Because of this, the Speller’s stress structural correctness and high performance in their herd. You will not find longer-sided cows anywhere than at Monte Lake, BC. Canadian Angus is very pleased to have one of our nation’s “Straight Canadian” herds donate Dan’s pick of his deeply bred cow herd to BtL7. The Speller family have been topping female and bull consignment sales for years in B.C., as well as Shane Castle’s “Canadian Legacy” sales series. Back in 2012, Sealin Creek made quite a ‘noise’ in our breed when their bull, Sealin Creek Eric 5Y, was declared the Grand Champion Bull at the BC Angus Gold Show in Armstrong, and then sold in “Canadian Legacy” for $37,000 to Dave and Carol Gray, Marsden, SK. Dan and his family’s Sealin Creek genetics are outcross to most herds in Canada, and I know that Sealin Creek Rosebud PAK 123F will be a great addition to your program!

DMM BLACKBIRD 105A x a sire of Miller Wilson’s choice 1765827

DMM 105A
February 10, 2013
When you balance the currently most notable cow in our country with “Legacy Builder” BtL donors, you can only get our ‘lead off’ embryo donation for 2017, coming to us from the Wilson family of Miller Wilson Angus. This is a package of two embryos. They have not been produced yet but will be this year so are available by this fall or for next winter/spring. Lee and Dawn will chat with you about their sire selections and you will get two. For the past two years in our national Gold Show program, DMM Blackbird 105A has been writing most of the history. She is our 2017 National Champion Female and won Agribition the year before with DMM International 54D, the bull who would become our 2017 All-Star Junior Champion and with semen selling as Lot 341. Every son 105A has borne is a ‘keeper’, and yet look at her! Her flawless phenotype certainly puts her near the top of the all-time ‘best cow’ list from the legendary DMM herd. With a different pedigree (a ¾ outcross!), explosive Milk and Total Maternal EPDs, 105A is definitely one of the best cows in our Angus world and you can access her right here in BtL7. Lee and Dawn and their growing Miller Wilson clan are designated a “Legacy Best Friend” because they have donated to every single one of our seven fundraisers. Their donations this year might just be their most impactful, coming as they are from the Show Female of the Year AND the Show Bull of the Year, who is a son of the Show Female! Before that, however, 169E had been ‘rocking’ the western Canadian Angus Gold Shows ever since Mark purchased her from legendary Canadian Angus herd Young Dale Angus, Carievale, SK. 169E was the Junior Yearling Heifer Reserve Champion at Agribition in 2015, repeating as the 2-year-old Champion in 2016 when she was also the Reserve Grand Champion Female in Brandon. Last year, however, her accomplishments were even higher. She was the Brandon Grand Champion Female and Reserve Mature Cow Champion at Agribition. Her greatest recognition yet, however, was making the RBC Top Ten Females in Regina last fall, cementing her reputation as one of the greatest cows in Canada right now. From outgoing Canadian Director and BtL7 key volunteer Lorraine Sanford comes this very interesting and high-value embryo choice donation. Lorraine and Alan Sanford are Nine Mile Ranch near Quesnel, BC and Lorraine has been very involved in both our fundraiser this year as well as on the BC Angus organizing committee for Convention. 1451Y was Lorraine’s selection from the historic Crowfoot dispersal. The embryos are sired by Red SSS Soldier 365W, the prominent and highly desirable sire bred by Lorraine’s fellow retiring director, our Past President David Sibbald. A resulting offspring and full sibling to his mating, 627D, is pictured above. The alternate choice is the ELITE dam ALOR 417Y who is stacked in such maternal elite-dom I struggle to imagine a more provably lauded pedigree! Her dam, 3N, became ELITE in 2016 and granddam, Red LCC Mattie K1269, was designated ELITE in 2010. That is, if you are counting, three generations of ELITE dams of these embryos! And, mated with the exciting, high performance High Calibre 177C, himself from a 2016-designated ELITE dam, how will these offspring not make the very best daughters possible, or sons to sire the best daughters? Two great choices… how can you go wrong?

Doug has never sold females and doesn’t show much, but in 2010, he had a Heifer Calf Champion with REID 13X, who now has four daughters in the Reid herd, and sired by his own 11U bull, a stud of huge impact on this program. A group of us, including Lee and Dawn Wilson, Lorraine Sanford, Canadian Angus President Elect Trevor Welch, and Duncan and Foundation Chair Cecilie Fleming, were able to see 11U ‘up close and personal’ at the age of almost nine in the pasture right beside Doug and Kate’s house. He is broad-based, free-moving and structurally sound. His musculature and natural fleshing is impressive. He is a genuine calving ease sire with shorter gestation length. His genetic influence runs deep in the Reid Angus program and having his best daughter’s embryos is exciting.

Do you know First Class semen consistently commands $15,000 per dose? And Primo is arguably his greatest son? A solid, superior brood cow and the hottest bull on our continent? Doug Reid is creating a legacy here… for you!

These are also exciting embryos from Rob, Cindy and Jessica Garner of Nordal Angus. Actually, the donor dam is Jessica’s so we truly owe HER for this great donation! Last year, Rob’s semen donation from HA Counselor 5118 brought $250/straw to (former ‘Pick-of-the-Herd Heifer Calf donors) Wilbar (2014) and Eastondale (2017). This year, you can access offspring from a brilliant cow selected out of Enright Farms’ 2015 fall production sale in a choice lot; 10A was Nordal’s pick. As time passes, Robbie’s choice looks wiser and wiser! 10A is a daughter of EXAR Blackbird 5877. Do you know who else this cow has CONNEALY COUNSELOR DAMERON FIRST IMPRESSION produced? How about 2016 Agribition Supreme Champion Bull EF Titan 545? We HA COUNSELOR 5118 EF BLACKBIRD 10A HA EVER LADY 1575 EXAR BLACKBIRD 5877 have semen from him selling as Lot 343! Or perhaps you’ve heard of the 2017 Agribition Grand Champion Bull EF Colossal 520? We have semen selling as Lot BW 1.9 WW 53 YW 91 MM 25 TM 51 Projected EPDs 342 and embryos sired by him as a choice in Lot 332! Obviously, Barry and Sean and the team at Enright Farms think that 5877 is a very, very important cow: she now has 37 registered offspring! And one of the daughters of this benchmark cow is none other than this donor dam, ESE 10A.

So, with maternal fame coming her way, Nordal decided to start flushing 10A, and here is the production mated with their new Counselor bull. He was a top seller in Hinman’s record-breaking 2016 sale. His maternal brother sired the $350,000 HA Cowboy Up 5405 who topped that sale, and who we feature as a sire of embryos in Lot 334 as well as his direct semen in Lot 363. Counselor’s dam, 1575, anchors one of Hinman’s strongest cow families. They praise her structural soundness, near-perfect udder and smooth, stylish appearance. Counselor has impressive EPDs and leads the breed in Scrotal and REA. When you find a sire who is Top 10% for growth traits and Milk and still maintains top 25% for BW, that is a ‘curve bending’ sire and that is what Counselor is. Robbie has donated semen on his Red Angus Show Bull of The Year (Lot 338) but when he pondered this set of embryos? I got very excited. I hope you will, too.

99W is sired by Cudlobe In Focus 5S, co-owned by Stevenson Angus Ranch and distributed by ORIgen, Inc. He is an absolute ‘beast’ of the ‘hard right’ in EPD tabulation; if you look at his EPDs on our Herd Book’s bar chart, they not only run to the right but all the way ‘to the right’! He is a calving ease ‘giant’ with explosive growth and carcass numbers. 99W might be the best 5S cow in Canada, and, without a doubt, her 87Z son, product of a mating with G A R New Design 5050, is her best!
87Z, for which possession was sold to Broadview Ranch Ltd., at Duchess, AB in the Cudlobe 2012 bull sale, carries numbers that are very, very impressive. He is in the Top 10% for all economically important traits while still running down the middle on BW and Top 15% for Milk. Based on his offspring lifetime average of 85 lbs actual birth weight on bull calves balanced with 715 lbs 200-day weights and now dozens of sons sold, it’s time to flush his dam! These embryos are by V A R Discovery 2240, 2013 lead-off and high-selling bull for Vintage Angus Ranch. We come to two donated lots (representing three matings!) from that great herd of Angus in central Alberta: Dave and Lynne Longshore’s Bar-E-L Angus. This first donation is making a ‘return’ engagement, having been offered each of the last two years to high acclaim. In 2016 this mating sold to HR Hahn Cattle Co. and Canadian Angus Director Bob Hahn for $1,500/embryo. Last year, it sold to for the same price to retiring Canadian Director Doug Reid, Reid Angus.

And so, Hamilton Farms is back… and even more benevolent, if that’s possible, with two embryo donations and three semen sires! The embryos are very, very special. These two Tibbie donor cows are just incredible and their impact is only beginning.
Tibbie 258W might not have a picture, but you know what she looks like: extremely balanced, feminine, sound and maternal with enough muscle shape, tremendously smooth with a ‘to-die-for’ udder. She is gorgeous fronted and has impressive feet. Her sire is Encore 702, so she is as classy as you make ‘em. To become a donor cow at Hamilton Farms means a lot and, in the past year, 258W made this impressive ‘top cut’.
258W is bred to one of the most exciting semen acquisitions in 2017: Musgrave 316 Stunner. Stunner was praised by many top cattlemen for his outstanding capacity, body dimension and uncompromised structural design. His yearling frame is a 6.3 with a 205-day weight of 874 lbs. and a 365-day weight of 1479 lbs. His young dam sports an ideal udder and a fantastic production record; she is one of the most outstanding cows in the Musgrave program. Stunner exhibited excellent libido during natural service during last fall’s breeding season at TK Angus in Nebraska, and is checking all the boxes so far! Stunner’s pedigree is very unique in comparison to most Canadian genetics, and his phenotype is certainly impressive. It’s a safe bet that you will end up with some ‘stunning’ Tibbie’s out of this cool mating, or some deluxe herd bulls to add to your battery or enhance your bull pen. Hamilton Farms have done the work… now you can ‘cash in’ on their solid, global reputation.

I always get a little wistful when I think of the 2009 World Angus Forum. It was such an incredible event. And for those of us who volunteered to create that spectacle, including working on the WAF Futurity in both 2007 and 2008, it was maybe even more special because those days in July at Spruce Meadows felt like such a climax and a turning point, all at the same time. After six long years ‘in the doldrums’, we re-introduced Canadian Angus to the world. And the globe answered in a very big way by accepting our genetics profoundly. And HF Espionage 24D—maternal brother to embryos a huge part of that was HF Tiger 5T. We got to watch him develop through the Futurity, watch his commanding performance at WAF and through 2009, and watch the world make him a globally popular sire. This donor, Tibbie 102W, is one of his greatest daughters, and a Canadian Angus ELITE dam since 2015. TM 52

But look at the sire of these embryos! Few bulls generated much more ‘buzz’ the last two years than Cowboy Up–the $350,000 record-seller from Hinman Angus for which Rob and Gail own Canadian rights—and his offspring even exceed his hype! Hamilton Farms’ bull sale this spring was dominated by Cowboy Up: top two selling bulls for $34,000 and $32,500 and the top selling heifer for $16,000. I hoped it might happen. Hamilton Farms made it so. Embryos from a great Tibbie cow and maybe the hottest Angus bull on the planet. Right here. For you. In Building the Legacy 7.

The Gibsons of Six Mile have been great supporters of BtL since our second fundraiser. Their two embryo package donations this year perhaps exceed their previous commitment in how much they not only represent their Fir Mountain, SK program, but their genetic leadership of the global Red Angus industry. These are definitely breed-leading embryos sired by the 2017 Agribition Grand Champion Red Angus Bull and a foundation cow who is ‘making her mark’ at Six Mile. This embryo combination was the high seller of Six Mile’s 2017 “Genetic Focus” sale last December with Blairs.Ag. Gloria 87R was a standout pick of the Bar-E-L herd when Six Mile purchased it along with the Allison family. 87R goes back to the original Six Mile “Gloria” cow family and her 2016 bull calf topped Allison’s bull sale last year. Her only three bull calves all sold to seedstock breeders and are working for Dvorak Bros, NE; Leeuwenburg Angus—Coaldale, AB; and T Bar K Ranch—Wawota SK. She is a powerful individual whose dam is sired by the bull who put Bar-E-L ‘on the (Red Angus) map’—Red YY Red Knight 640F—all those years ago.

Going through the Six Mile cow herd is like going through the Hamilton Farms cow herd; each paddock you drive into makes you think you’ve just seen the ‘best’ group of cows. And each successive pasture seems to just keep getting better and better! And, for me, I think the “Lakoto” cow family at the Gibson’s is my favourite. And 35W has to be considered one of their very best, ever. Six Mile lost the sire of these embryos far too young. I remember them showing him in Denver and I thought he was one of the best bulls ‘of the day’, so stout and smooth and correct. Well, New Era made a resurgence last fall when he sired the Reserve Grand Champion Bull at Agribition for Wrights Livestock, Triple L Angus and Blairs West. This bull calf totally rocked and everyone thinks he’s awesome. Further, a New Era daughter was a recent division champion at the Fort Worth Stock Show for the Beck Family of Premier Reds. New Era’s unique pedigree and strong EPD profile matched with Lakoto 35W’s maternal mastery make this mating intriguing. I see profitability in the future of whoever purchases this donation with their dark red and powerful progeny.

And how about Blairs.Ag Cattle Co.? This is a major contributor to our Canadian Angus fraternity in genetic influence and leadership. Moreover, they are important ‘players’ in the whole of Canadian agriculture. And, on a more local level, they are a “Legacy Best Friend” who, along with Miller Wilson Angus and Alta Genetics, have donated to each and every one of our “Building the Legacy” Canadian Angus Foundation fundraisers.
How about the embryos? The dam came from Wildcat Creek and they thought she was “one of the best, if not the best animal” they ever sold. She has ‘stop you in your tracks’ phenotype and pasture presence with a design that defines perfection. She offers as much breeding flexibility as anything Wildcat bred. And they knew a thing or two about the cow family as she is a maternal sister to the bull they purchased out of the Soo Line Cattle Co. dispersal for all the money, Red Cockburn Ribeye 308U. 367Z matings have proven popular in the United States with TWG Tommy Jack 166A and Damar Trump C512. Signature has made his mark as one of the most impressive Red Angus sires in North America. This dark red 2016 Agribition Grand Champion Bull features an amazing combination of size, mass, quality and athleticism. He transmits this power and phenotype to his popular progeny that have become widely successful in the sale ring and show arena. Semen is now extremely limited on this outstanding sire and there may NEVER be semen available in Canada ever again. Don’t miss this opportunity to add the exclusive Signature influence to your program. How about those Riders? Regardless of where you are from in Canada, we all cheer for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. If they are not our first choice, they are, for almost everyone, our second choice. And when they play here in Alberta, whether in Edmonton or, maybe more notably, in Calgary, the Rider ‘green’ permeates the stadiums in almost equal measure to the local boys. So the opportunity to attend a Riders game with Blairs.Ag, a true Saskatchewan agriculture independent business success story, will be special. They will also put you up for the night in style and, since you HAVE to eat, they are taking you to one of the best places in western Canada to dine: The Diplomat. Their beef is outstanding, but so is everything else. And please let me give you a tip that was given to me by none other than Doug Henderson, a dining expert and connoisseur if ever we knew one: when at The Diplomat, you must… you simply MUST… order the Cherries Jubilee. It WILL change your life. So Blake will give you all the Riders home dates for the year and you take your pick. And how about Blairs.Ag Cattle Co.? Blairs.Ag have definitely ‘upped their game’ this year by not only donating a great embryo package, but by creating ‘an event’, and experience for two of you to participate in and enjoy. I suggest making a full day of it and going out to Lanigan (and other points in the area!) to check out the herd, including the donor dam facility. There are many impressive cows in this family operation and you will enjoy seeing them. Then, head to Regina for dinner, a football game and an overnight stay, not necessarily all in that order. Should you get to be hosted by Blake MacMillan and Kevin Blair, well, let me just say that the hosting will be first rate, memorable and so, so much fun! Thanks, Blairs.Ag! Clint and the Morasch family of Lazy MC Angus at Bassano, AB are known for their outstanding genetics focused on commercial cattle producers, their hard work and their generosity. We are so honoured to have them back in BtL7 with two important Red Angus sires. The first, Tradition, is codonated by Nordal Farms, who had about as notable a fall last year in the show ring as anyone, ever! Tradition 111C has been turning heads since the 2015 “CowGirls” sale where Robbie Garner chose him as his “Pick-of-the-2015-born Bull Calves” for $29,000. Since then, he has been Grand Champion at both Olds Fall Classic Gold shows and, last fall at Farmfair, was declared our National Champion Bull, as well as having sired dozens of calves. Given his 2017 success, he was declared our Show Bull of the Year. His Legacy sire has lived up to everyone’s high expectations. He is sired by Lazy MC’s U.S. National Champion Bull, Red Lazy MC Eye Spy 64Y. Legacy’s dam is a powerful black red-carrier from the famous Sitz “Everelda Entense” cow family. This outstanding herd bull does a tremendous job of adding performance, eye appeal, scrotal size and carcass traits. The first Legacy daughters are in production and are impressive. Legacy was also a show winner but, more importantly, sired high sellers. His EPDs are breed leading as well: top 5% in WW, YW and HPG; top 1% for TM, REA and Marbling. His sons are highly impressive and continue to find strong acceptance in both Canada and the United States. And this is his #1 son. For your selection. Our National Champion Bull.

Hail, hail… the gang’s all here! Pretty much every one of our National Champions and Gold Show ‘All-Star’ winners are presented to you as donations by their owners on these next few pages. Truly, for our Foundation, “our cup runneth over…” And I’m very excited by the number of young sires we have. Like our reigning All-Star Red Angus Bull Calf Champion, Slash 105E. He was also named the Agribition Semex Beef Presidents Classic Champion Red Angus Bull last November. Red Lazy MC Slash 105E is just beginning to write his Angus history. And you get to be an early part of it thanks to this awesome donation. Check out his 18.3” scanned ribeye! If you want to improve our nation’s Red Angus carcass genetics, this is a great sire to progress with. Clint Morasch and his Lazy MC team are one of our nations’ most focused on outcross genetics. They were extremely excited to source Red DKF Razor 55C from the Fettes family at Gladmar, SK. Razor has done an exceptional job in his first breeding season. He is a complete outcross for the Red Angus gene pool and is a heavy muscled sire with excellent balance and overall eye appeal. Both his sons and daughters have outstanding phenotype, hair coats and performance. Slash carries on these traits, and adds more. His dam is a top-side outcross and, on the bottom side, includes one of the greatest Lazy MC bulls ever: Smash 42N. As Lazy MC’s lead off and high selling bull at their sale late last month, he is now co-owned with Slack Farms, South Dakota, who purchased him for $26,500.

The folks at Lorenz Angus are well known for their leadership and community contribution. Richard is a municipal county councillor and Chad is a former Canadian Junior Angus President. He is also an esteemed Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador as well. He has represented us abroad in Argentina and at the first World Angus Forum Youth Team Challenge in New Zealand. And Chad and Becky Domolewski will be getting married in a ‘royal’ Angus wedding just days after BtL7 takes place. They are also great breeders of Angus cattle. And, last fall, Lorenz Unified 17C was declared our National Champion Bull at Farmfair in Edmonton. And it would continue: Top Five Finalist in the Farmfair Supreme Championship and an RBC Top 10 Finalist at Agribition. EVERYONE likes and appreciates this young sire! Co-owned with the Domolewski family, they knew his promise. He was 2015 Reserve Bull Calf Champion in Armstrong, BC and Olds, AB. He was Junior Champion Bull at Farmfair in 2016. 2017 would be his show career climax as our National Champion. Everyone is impressed by his balance of striking natural muscling and extraordinary athleticism; this bull moves like very, very few show bulls ever. And maybe his greatest attribute? His dam, Caroline 1Z. She is the most notable dam at Lorenz, and is one of our newest Canadian Angus designated ELITE dams. This is highly notable because she qualifies by her first four offspring, including their lead-off bull at this spring’s sale. With balanced BW and massive performance EPDs, an impressive phenotype and superior mother, Unified is a rare sire. And I’m thrilled he’s our lead off Black bull in BtL7.

The Reserve National Champion? Our Show Bull of the Year? Look no further because he is here. Right here! That sounds more Dr. Seuss than befits a bull of this magnitude but I wanted something unique to introduce one of the best bulls in Canada today, donated by Glen Gabel/Miller Wilson Angus. As with all great Angus sires, you start with a remarkable dam. Please turn back a few pages and consider the footnotes on Lot 323, our incredible Show Female of the Year, DMM Blackbird 105A. Showing alongside this mama in 2016, they were the Reserve Show Female of the Year; one year later, mother and son each grab this notable Canadian title. And look at International 54D. He’s big. He’s mammothly muscled. He’s got a big, sound foot on him. He moves well. He’s a bull of today because he has the stoutness and rib capacity of 105A and the growth, dimension and mass of his International sire. International’s sire, Harvestor, set the selling standard in 2012 at $275,000. Harvestor’s dam (S A V Emblynette 5483) and full sister traded for $400,000 and $200,000 in 2013. Then, International set the new record by selling for $400,000 in 2013. His dam is now over 10 years of age and is as phenotypically correct as they come. By mating their great 105A cow, complete with deep-seeded breeding strategies inherent in the decades long-running Gumbo Gulch and Southern Ox programs, with the hottest Schaff Angus Valley bull in the world, Lee and Dawn created an impressive genetic combination. Glen Gabel knows it, and is benefitting. And now, you can, too!

Enright Farms (Renfrew, ON), and Bar-E-L Angus (Stettler, AB), are donating 10 straws of EF Colossal 520, the 2017 CWA Grand Champion Bull. You will see below that his maternal brother and fellow Agribition champion is also donated again this year. You will be able to choose from two of the most impressive bulls in our nation with international recognition as Agribition Grand Champions! And, again, please note… these are maternal brothers… and to Lot 328! All hail the 5877 cow! Both are beef machines, both impressed Angus breeders not just coastto-coast across Canada, but throughout the globe as all eyes of the world converge on Regina for what many believe is the greatest exhibition of beef genetics on the planet. The Enright family has won the largest show in Canada two years in a row! And one of our nation’s most astute cattlemen, Dave Longshore, was so impressed with Colossal when he saw him earlier in 2017 that Bar-E-L became a co-owner, leading us to an optional embryo mating for donated Lot 332! Colossal started turning heads when he, like his brother, Titan, the year before, won the Angus Gold Show in Quebec, Expo Boeuf. As soon as he got off the truck at Regina last November, westerners were paying attention to this bull they were hearing so much about. Judge Jack Ward (my counterpart with the American Hereford Association) assessed him the “most complete bull we’ve seen today”, complimenting his superior muscling, extraordinary mobility and perfection of structural soundness”. He was a popular winner and, thanks to the Longshores and Enrights, you can access his genetics in BtL7 on Saturday, June 9th. Many thanks to Enright Farms and Bar-E-L Angus/Enright Farms for this exciting donation.

Enright Farms (Renfrew, ON) are, once again, donating 10 straws of EF Titan 545, the 2016 CWA Grand Champion and RBC Supreme Champion Bull. How impressive is Enright Farms these day, hey? This Ottawa Valley operation is dominating sire production in Canada so we all need to pay attention! Titan was one of the most exciting bulls in Canada in the fall of 2016. We started hearing about him when he was named Supreme Champion Bull at Expo Boeuf in Victoriaville, QC over the Thanksgiving weekend. He made many friends at the National Show in Toronto and then, in Regina, would find his full show ring glory by winning not only the largest Angus show in Canada but, two days later, was further declared the RBC Supreme Champion Bull. He was also our ‘All-Star’ Junior Champion Bull in 2016. This Harvestor son is a dominator! Looking beyond the phenotype and show record, Titan is just as impressive genotypically. His dam’s pedigree includes Lutton. A few years ago, my nephews told me that, from their experience working for Express, the Lutton offspring were among the best they’d ever seen. Titan also shows massive performance, and is an enormous growth leader, top 10% for both WW and YW while maintaining superior Milk and top 15% TM. We all know that Harvestor is all about ‘pressing the scale down’ and so does Titan. If you want to hear me ‘brag’ more about the dam both of these bulls share, please see Lot 328 who is a maternal sister to BOTH Titan and Colossal! The Enrights ensured he was a feature donation in last year’s BtL6 fundraiser, selling for $200/straw to Mackenzie Stout (Stout Simmentals) and Tambri (Brian and Tammi Ribey) and he’s back again this year! Many thanks, Team and Family Enright!

I was excited when Kyle and Brittany (Boss Lake Genetics), Lewis Farms and Miller Wilson Angus committed to this donation. Few bull calves were as popular last fall. In fact, while driving to Amherst, NS for our Canadian Angus Member Engagement Session, I was called by both my mom and niece telling me how impressive this calf is (he had just won Olds Reserve Grand Champion Bull). When I got to see him at our Farmfair National Show, I knew they were right: this calf is important and I’m so grateful and honoured that his semen is donated in BtL7. Boss Lake has been exhibiting very impressive Angus for years now, factoring into our ‘All Star’ calculations many years. Bonafide was close again as he won or advanced from his class every time and was Bull Calf Champion at Agribition. He is one of Pedigree’s greatest Canadian sons. Pedigree was the top selling, record setting bull from the 2015 SAV sale at $1,087,500. He offers the pedigree, phenotype and breed-leading EPD profile to be one of the truly great breeding achievements in Angus history; his lineage is the stuff of a maternal masterpiece. Stunning in his design, Pedigree is stylish, super fronted, long-sided and has a powerful hip. His progeny are proving to have extra length and size. Pedigree is quickly becoming the ‘go to’ sire to add extra pounds and frame score. And Bonafide’s dam? Yeah. That’s a familiar prefix and pedigree. You know it is proven and bomb-proof. What do you think about a bull that Miller Wilson Angus and Lewis Farms want to own? I think you pay attention. He is a ‘Bonafide’ leader.

Jagger 18C is one of Canada’s most decorated bulls in 2017, from a group of enthusiastic owners making their first donation to help “Build the Legacy” of our Foundation. Triple L, Rock Point and J Bar Dee have their second calf crops on the ground and his genetics continue to ‘move like Jagger’ toward progress and profitability. He competed in the National Red Angus Show in Denver this January where he made many friends with his cool pedigree, outstanding performance and deep, cherry red colour. Jagger’s pedigree is filled with greats: Red VGW Game Plan 816, the outcross sire Six Mile brought to Canada to such extraordinary impact; Sakic 832C, one of the most influential Red Angus bulls in Canadian history; Rob Roy, a former American National Champion and his son, Rev, the 2007 Agribition Reserve Grand Champion. Jagger ranks in the top 1% for both Milk and TM, top 20% for WW and top 25% for YW, a balancing act that is rare, especially including top 40% for BW. Throw in top 20% for Marbling and Jagger is a multi-purpose bull with a high degree of utility. Obviously, J Bar Dee and Rock Point knew this, too, making Jagger 18C the second high selling bull for Tetzlaffs in their 2016 8th Annual Impact bull sale. Phenotypically, he’s got those ‘Jagger-like moves’ as well, winning Grand Champion at 2017 Gold Shows in Brandon and Lloydminster. This made Jagger 18C our Runner-Up Show Bull of the Year, and a bull we wanted to pursue for BtL7. Note his dam is a great Moon cow. Please remember the brilliant and incredibly generous ‘Pick of the Herd’ Heifer Calf donation from Red Moon Red Angus featured earlier in this catalogue!

Another of our nation’s great producers is the legendary Remitall program and the Latimer family. And we have them in BtL7 with another great semen donation on their hottest ‘up and coming’ sire, co-owned with Otter Creek Angus, DJ Cook, making his debut as a BtL donor. Decisive 35D was their $27,000 half interest high seller in 2017. Richard reports their 2018 calves are extremely impressive and 35D is ‘decisively’ used extensively again in 2018. His sire, Pioneer, represents decades of disciplined breeding for performance and maternal value while offering the calving ease potential inherent in his pedigree. His calving ease balances really well with the power of Harvestor daughters like 35D’s first calf heifer dam. 115B is a real selling point to 35D, given her cow family influence at Remitall. Ellegra 115B is from Ellegra 719U, the dam of 13 registered offspring including, most notably, Remitall F Prospector 110Z, the Farmfair, Agribition and National Grand Champion Bull who was 2014 Supreme Champion at both Edmonton and Regina. He was their high selling bull in 2013 for $18,000 for half, then resold later the next year for $62,000 to Breed Creek. In his first calf crop, he sired the 2015 Canadian National Champion Bull, Remitall F Boycott 71B. ‘Uncle’ Prospector’s progeny have consistently low birth weights with lots of growth and performance. His daughters are producing and making truly beautiful young females with correct udders. Decisive is impressive in his own right. Farmfair and Agribition Senior Bull Calf Champion in 2015. National Junior Champion at Farmfair last fall. 2017 Grand Champion at Olds. And another year in public in 2018. Why not make this ‘decision’ on 35D’s way up?

A two-time Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Grand Champion Bull?! That is crazy! And we’ve got him on a ‘return engagement’ in BtL7, from Premier Livestock, Hasson Cattle Co. and Clear View Angus. He was our National Champion Bull in 2016, won the Toronto RAWF Supreme, and then repeated as Grand again last fall. When was the last time that happened?! Last year, Check Book brought $100/straw to Norfolk Cattle and we’re thrilled to have him back in 2018. Peter Frijters always finds ‘the great ones’ in his American quests, and his early 2016 search yielded his most influential result yet with Check Book. Found at Wayne and Barb Ohlrich’s OHL Ranch in Norfolk, Nebraska, Check Book continues to build interest and investment since his move to Canada. He has absolutely dominated the show ring since arriving at Peter’s Milverton, ON operation. Check out these results: • Supreme Champion All Breed Bull – 2016 Peterborough Exibition; • Supreme Champion All Breed Bull – 2016 Barrie Fall Fair; • Class Winner and Reserve Junior Champion Bull – 2016 North American International Exposition (Louisville, Kentucky); • Supreme Champion All Breed Bull and National Grand Champion Angus Bull – 2016 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair; • Grand Champion Angus Bull – 2017 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Lutton genetics are noted for soundness balancing explosive muscle, but also catch the extreme maternal prowess of Saugahatchee in the pedigree with all of the style of Freedom 104. Peter knows now to make them as well as how to pick ‘em so the hard part is done. All you have to do to incorporate our 2016 National Champion Bull’s genetics into your herd is dig out your ‘Check Book’ and support BtL7.

It was a great afternoon when Tanner and Megan (W Sunrise Angus) donated semen from his $33,000 high selling purchase from Poplar Meadows’ “Northern Alliance Bull Sale”. Executive Decision 5E impressed so many as a calf last fall. Purchasing 5E is a grand “Executive Decision” by Tanner and team, however, because we will learn much more about this outstanding young sire. Thanks to W Sunrise/Poplar Meadows, you can be part of his history. From the day 5E was born, Tanya knew he was destined for stardom. All spring he was the calf everyone noticed and that she took cell phone pictures of… almost daily! Last fall he was Champion Black Angus Bull, then Reserve Grand Champion, in Agribition’s Semex Presidents Classic. His sire is Bar-E-L Natural Law 52Y, whose semen donation in BtL5 brought $650/straw to Brooking Angus Ranch. He is becoming even more sought after because of his impressive daughters. PM Rosebud 77’15, won the Summer Synergy Supreme Championship at Calgary Stampede last July and was named to the RBC Supreme Top 10 in Regina last fall. PM Echo 8’16 was the 2017 Agribition Reserve Grand Champion Female and CWA featured two more division champions sired by him. Executive Decision was developed by a great young cow with a perfect udder and proper feet. His 5X grand dam is a donor and past show cow. This is one of our country’s great young sires. Poplar Meadows has A.I.’d several of their top cows to Executive Decision this spring. Make the ‘decision’ to come along for a great ride… this semen will be available this fall, or for 2019 breeding. CDN-qualified semen will be collected once the 2018 breeding season is done.

Blairs.Ag generated much excitement this spring with the Argentina influence in their “The Pursuit of Excellence” bull sale. Leading the way as Lot 1 was Blair’s Candelero 406D, purchased for $16,500 by Canadian Sires and Greenwood Angus, who are thrilled to share him in BtL7. First, a little about Argentina’s globe-leading beef cattle program… Argentina, with 53.565 million head, is the world’s fifth largest country by cattle population, almost 4½ times Canada. The herd is incredibly efficient, grazing year-round and, as a result, have become very hardy and adaptable to different environments. The Tres Marias program has made the Gutierrez family one of the most notable Angus seedstock producers globally. The team at Blairs.Ag were extremely excited to lead off their 2018 bull sale with 406D who combines the 2012 Palermo Grand Champion Female with the power and performance of Tres Marias 8155 Candelero, known for producing performance, power and bone. Apampado 0401 is the #1 cow in Argentina today—2012 Mother of the Year—and dam of the 2017 Palermo Grand Champion Female! As those who have made the trip to Palermo can attest, the quality of cattle is exceptional and many breeders have waited a long time to experience Argentine genetics in North America. Last fall, Blair’s Surena 402D sold in the Power & Perfection at Agribition for $34,000, its highest selling female. With the uniqueness of pedigree and tremendous maternal capability, these genetics’ time has come in our ‘great white north’. Blairs.Ag has brought them to our continent and to Canada. And Greenwood/Canadian Sires are letting you be part of the Argentine wave! Maybe you should ‘light your way’ with Candelero 406D?

Always in search of strategic acquisitions who are, optimally, outcross, Bryan Willms was in Shelby, MT in March 2017 for the 28th Annual Flesch Farms’ production sale. Bryan selected one of the highest sellers at $13,500 for two-thirds and you have the opportunity to gain from his purchase. Countdown was the lead-off pictured bull for Flesch Farms, quite well known in Canada for exhibiting occasionally at Agribition but doing so every year at the commercially focused Medicine Hat Pen Show every December. They are competitive in that Bull Pen show. Bryan was looking for a bull that would balance easy calving with growth and did he ever find a curve bender! Countdown is a real calving ease herd sire whose offspring, with the first calf crop born easy, are now proving to be growing impressively and rapidly at Dundurn, SK. Countdown is awesome in terms of structure and design, and impressively smooth through his front while being big bodied with great depth and shape of rib. His dam is an impressive young female and the Willms are very happy. Countdown is sired by the $55,000 Connealy Countdown, who ratioed 111 in Connealy’s herd for weaning weight. He was bred to first calf heifers and the calf crops have come easily with low birth weights, but high vigour at birth and are attractive with tremendous capacity. Wilbar put a halter on Countdown twice last fall and he was the Reserve Junior Champion both times, including to the Lot 341 Show Bull of the Year. I think the Countdown is on because you will see him again… and his progeny!

Back in BtL3, Wilbar provided our ‘ultimate’ donation: A ‘Pick-of-theHerd’ Heifer Calf. It sold extremely well and helped establish the culture we benefit from today. The Willms family is back with a couple of semen donations this year of maverick bulls whose best days are certainly yet ahead of them. With Red Pie Specialist 430, they have brought Cockburn Red Angus into our donor circle and we are very excited to have Ward and team as part of the extraordinary group of Canadian Angus members and partners who create so much value and opportunity through their generosity and benevolence to our Foundation. Specialist was added to Cockburn and Wilbar’s herd bull lineup for his outcross genetics and his combination of calving ease and growth. He constantly sires calves that are born easily, yet don’t compromise performance. He has been the most reliable calving ease sire either has ever used. Wilbar reports average birth weights on his bull calves of 78 lbs and 74 lbs for heifers. Specialist sons proved very popular in 2017 and 2018, including Cockburn’s 2017 high seller at $77,500, Red Cockburn Assassin 624D, purchased by Brylor Ranch. 624D was one of the most talked about bulls all of last year and he bred virtually EVERYTHING at Brylor in 2017. Wilbar’s high selling bull this year at $16,000 is another Specialist son. Wilbar and Cockburn are both excited about the first set of daughters that began milking this year, who are attractive, easy-doing females. This would include Wilbar Blackana 50D, the 2017 Reserve Grand Champion Female at Lloydminster’s Gold Show and rocked 4-H and junior shows all year.

Past BtL donors Ter-Ron Farms and U-2 Ranch welcome Allison Farms in as a new donor in 2018 with a very exciting Reckoning son. Reverence was purchased from U-2 in 2016 for $40,000 by Ter-Ron and Bar-E-L and acquired in the Bar-E-L dispersal by Allison Farms. He is the ‘go to’ bull for all owners for calving ease. He carries himself in a proud manner with a real ‘herd bull’ look. Dark in colour, on a real solid foot, with great hair, Reverence is a deeply athletic genetic package. His sons carry these same attributes, and his daughters are proving impressive as yearlings getting bred right now. Reverence is definitely one of Reckoning’s top sons. He offers the same muscle, depth and hair coat with extra calving ease and style. He adds smoothness, length and a good foot. His dam, a maternal sister to Mama’s Boy, clinched the deal when Dave Longshore of Bar-E-L toured the U-2 herd! The Unger family remains super impressed with Reverence progeny and plan on using him more along with one of his top sons. This spring alone, U-2 sold a $35,000 son (DUA 279E) to Genex (3rd high seller), a $22,000 son (DUA 29E) to McMillen Ranching Ltd. (6th high seller), and a $21,000 son (DUA 383E) to Majestic Ranches Ltd. (8th high seller). Ter-Ron’s high selling bull this year was also by Reverence, and sold for $15,500 to Adair Angus, while their high selling heifer was a paternal sister as well, selling for $6,750 to Cactus Coulee Ranch. Reverance’ offspring are obviously in high demand. And he could add this value to your herd just as he has for these outstanding operations!

Speaking of outcross genetics, here is a great example of exactly that within our Red Angus gene pool donated by Brad Chappell and team. And he’s mature, so proven and predictable. Red Minburn Copenhagen 3Y, the $67,000 half interest Masterpiece 2011 high seller, was a big investment but surpassed expectations of his sons and especially his females, who have turned into model Angus cows. After his first two bull sale’s years (2014/2015), Copenhagen had 13 sons working in purebred herds and countless sons in top commercial programs in the country. Sons: 2014: Red U-2 Authentic 139A - $27,000 - Y Coulee Land & Cattle & Brown; Creek Red Angus; - Red U-2 Skoal 27A - $25,000 - Silver Spur Ranch; - Red U-2 Rock Solid 165A - $20,000 - KBJ Round Farms & Aspen View Angus; Red Pacific Maverick 0A - $20,000 - Peacock Red Angus, Covington, Texas; Red U-2 Copenhagen 114A - $16,000 - Lloyd & Donna Ross; Red U-2 Copenhagen 108A - $16,000 - Ian & Anja Mitchell; 2015: Red U-2 Sniper 23B - $20,000 - Golden Sunset Red Angus; Paternal grandsons: 2016: Red U-2 Authority 262C - $30,000 - Weber Red Angus, Wagner, South Dakota; Sons of daughters: 2017: Red U-2 Malbec 195D - $46,000 - Genex Cooperative, Inc., Shawano, WI; Red U-2 Rendition 340D - $25,000 - Bayou Creek; 2018: Red U2 Blue Collar 295E - $76,000 ½ interest - Rust Mountain, Mercer, ND. As Eminem rapped all those years ago… “Guess who’s back?/Back again?” Can you “Believe” it? Well, you can, because Richmond Ranch is just THAT generous, and this time, we have a full TEN straws donated to BtL7 of one of the greatest bulls currently in Canada, now with 377 offspring after his first two calving seasons. Richmond Ranch lives by the impressive motto: “Where Quality Is Not A Goal—It’s A Standard”. When you consider the pursuit Jim and Tiffany have shown in their quest for the best Angus genetics, it’s easy to see they are shooting to maintain those very high standards for their young and very much growing Angus operation. I consider Richmond Ranch Canada’s most influential Limousin seedstock producer so their laser focus on Angus, both Red and Black, couldn’t be more exciting. Three years ago our Angus world rocked at Richmond’s $146,000 purchase of Believe. In 2016, our high-selling semen was Richmond’s donation of three straws for $750/straw. Last year, the opportunity was repeated with two packages of three, and they sold for $525 and $500 to Hextall Livestock and Van Esse Livestock. Now that Believe is the third most popular Canadian sire (189 registered calves in 2017), perhaps the demand has cooled, but there are still Angus breeders who ‘believe’ he can help them. When you consider his offspring, you know the promise of his picture is providing solid proof of his pedigree. What else would you expect with genetics coming from an outfit like Young Dale at Carievale, SK? The Youngs are definitely among the world’s most reputable Angus breeders.

Last year the Liebreich famiy of Merit Cattle Co.—Radville, SK—provided our highest selling donation with their ‘Pick-of-the-Herd’ Heifer Calf, $15,000 to Poplar Meadows of Houston, BC. The Liebreich’s actually approached us about making this donation because they believe so strongly in the Foundation’s objectives. They return this year with another exclusive and distinctive donation. Riley Lafrentz, a great friend of the Liebreich family, found Range Boss in Kansas. He wondered if they would be interested in this unique breeding bull. He checks a lot of boxes. He’s got a great look and presence about him. He’s long bodied, deep sided and easy fleshing, with great hair, good scrotal and feet and a second-to-none disposition. The Pride cow family at Bar S is a cornerstone of their operation. His structure is impeccable and he consistently stamps his progeny with sons and daughters equally in demand, including at their bull sale again this year. His bulls are greatly accepted, highlighted by Merit Sting, selling to Double F for $52,000 half interest in the Masterpiece Sale at Agribition last November. A daughter, Merit Flora 6078 is a popular many-time champion: Weyburn Regional Grand Champion Female, Showdown Champion Owned Female, and Reserve Grand Champion Female at Lloydminster Stockade Round-Up Gold Show. It was another daughter that Tanya selected last year as her ‘Pick of the Herd ‘ choice. His first daughters calved this spring and display impeccable udder structure. Range Boss is poised to become the next generation foundation sire at Merit. They have never sold any semen to purebred breeders and they won’t be offering any more this spring. And you can build on this very foundation! You can… be… the BOSS!

Justamere South Dakota 833C is a unique bull for BtL7 and we’re glad to have the Fox family and Justamere Farms Ltd. along with partners Still Meadows and 8 C’s Cattle Co. as new donors. When he sold in Justamere’s “21st Annual” bull sale, Jon suggested that, “This bull is worth a good look. He is extremely long bodied, wide across his top, very sound and agile; he also has a tremendous hair coat. We think he has unlimited potential as a herd sire. His mother is a successful show female out of another successful show female! Also, he was halter broke in two days and has a great temperament which is very important.” He is a big, massive breeding machine sired by Mohnen South Dakota. His sire’s WW is in the top 2%, YW is the top 4% and TM is top 5%. Moving into his carcass merit, however, his Marbling is also top 4%, impressive given the explosive muscle of the bull. As you might expect, however, his Carcass Weight is in the Top 20%, so you know you are going to get pounds of performance and pounds of beef from South Dakota. 833C carries his daddy’s genes in spades. And yet, look at his picture. Don’t you see style? And balance? Isn’t his profile very, very impressive? Others thoughts so, too, since, as a yearling, he was the IPE Grand Champion Bull in Armstrong, BC, and their Supreme Champion. Later that year, he was Reserve Grand Champion at the Olds Gold Show and Junior Champion at Farmfair. Last year, as a mature 2-year-old, he was Senior Champion at Lloydminster. And I think this picture truly shows all his glory, taken in Denver last January.

A new acquisition for Bouchard Livestock, we are proud to offer this growth beast in BtL7. He was bred by Marda Farms in Lodi, WI and is now coowned with folks in Montana, Colorado and Wyoming. His AAA EPDs are an absolute dream: top 1% for WW, YW, Ribeye and the $Weaning and $Feedlot value index. Top 2% for the Carcass Weight and the $Beef value index. A double-digit CED EPD puts him in the top 20% where he also is evaluated for Scrotal, Milk and Fat. Blacksmith 683 was the $24,000 high selling bull in the 2017 National Western Angus Bull Sale where he combined fabulous pedigree, phenotype, and individual performance blending some of the most sought-after genetics in our breed. Deep in his ribcage and thick across his rump, the eye appealing son of a past Connealy top-selling yearling had a birth weight of 70 pounds and an adjusted 205 day weight of 986 pounds for a weaning ratio of 125 as highest weaning weight bull in his ET contemporary group backed by an exceptional genomic profile. His dam is a Ten X daughter out of a full sister to the $110,000 S A V Resource 1441. His foundation third dam, S A V Blackcap Mary 4136, is the all-time highest income producing donor in the S A V program. He is Top Dollar Angus—qualified. For low birth, high growth, superior phenotype and cutting-edge data this is a knockout, exciting new genetic option for the future.

Retiring Canadian Angus Board member Lorraine Sanford has ‘dug deep’ into her tank and offers some very rare semen that is seldom available for public auction. Lorraine has been a solid supporter of the BtL fundraiser since its inception and is making three very serious donations this year, including these two semen lots, the first of which may never be offered again. No matter how hard people shook the tree, they did not uproot Nexus as the top Red Angus semen sale bull at ORIGen for six consecutive years, limited now by availability. This soggy, high-capacity beef machine transmits performance, muscle and eye appeal to his progeny. Nexus is big topped, shapey, has loads of eye appeal and tremendous feet and legs with an excellent disposition. He was Grand Champion at the Iowa, Minnesota and Tulsa State Fairs after surprising everyone by becoming the high selling bull in the 2012 Silveiras bull sale in California, the first time a Red outsold all the Black bulls in one of the elite and most successful seedstock programs in the U.S. Red Silveiras Mission Nexus is the undisputed EPD ‘king’ of Red Angus. When I talked about ‘hard right’ back in Cudlobe’s donated Lot 329, Nexus is the ‘hard right’ of Red EPDs with only CED, MCE, Fat and Stayability skewing to the left. This is why those in pursuit of optimal carcass data do so with Nexus. There may not be a bull in any beef breed that has accomplished more diverse success with national champion daughters, sons that command top dollar in volume at rancher bull sales and harvest progeny with documented superior end product excellence.

Nine Mile Ranch runs about 80 purebred Angus alongside a commercial herd. The purebred and commercial cattle all perform under the same working conditions and thrive in BC’s bush range. This is no easy feat! Alan and Lorraine’s children and grandchildren are the 5th and 6th generations at Nine Mile Ranch, so this family knows something about legacies. Speaking of legacies, with Lorraine retiring from the Canadian Angus Board after two consecutive terms of service, we greatly appreciate the parting gifts (Lots 326, 358 and 359) from her family to help build the future of our Foundation. Canadian Angus history was made in December 2013 when Crowfoot Cattle Co.’s complete dispersal saw Moonshine 8081U sell for $46,000 to Genex/Ole Farms. Since then, 830 offspring have been registered to him and he has the 18th highest number of producing offspring among contemporary Canadian-bred sires. He turned 10 last January, and he still had 42 offspring registered last year. And why not? With his accuracies now in the range of 90%+, 8180U is in the top 1% Red Angus sire for WW and YW, top 3% for Carcass Weight and top 5% for Ribeye. He does this while remaining in the top 35% for BW. There is still great value and influence in this decade-old sire. Did you know that 8081U was a heifer’s first calf? How about that his most famous son, XO Crowfoot 0102X, born in his first calf crop, has 817 registered offspring and will exceed his sire’s progeny count this year as 2017’s sixth most popular Canadian sire? It’s never too late to invest in a classic and 8081U is certainly that!

This rare Towaw donation comes for the second year. Given the history of this family operation in the development of Red Angus in Canada, when they select a sire the rest of us should likely take note and maybe ‘opt in’, if given opportunity. Wildman’s purchased half interest in Zeppelin in the spring of 2014 from Windy Hill Stock Farm. He was extremely attractive-fronted, good footed, long bodied, big hipped and had that deep red colour that is so popular. Zeppelin gave Towaw a set of calves that pattern very much like him and have impressed breeders both here and down at Smoky Y Red Angus in Kansas. Visitors compliment his progeny’s correctness and muscle shape. Unfortunately, Towaw lost Zep to injury in the summer of 2015; his legacy lives on through progeny only. They collected some semen prior to losing him so Zeppelin has been sampled among the top herds in North America with extremely positive reports. Calves are powerful and growthy with tons of eye appeal and style. His EPDs have continuously improved with more calves born: he is now top 1% for YW & CW & Stay, top 2% for WW and top 3% for TM. His daughters have sound udders and raise top cut calves. One of his first daughters at Towaw won Reserve Junior Champion Female at both 2016 Olds and Edmonton Gold Shows. He also has sons working at Rack, Shiloh, Petherbridge, HR Hahn and Flying K. His packages of semen donated last year brought $450 and $400/straw to Nine Mile Ranch and Peter Estabrooks. And you can join the list and take a ride on this “Zeppelin”!

Hamilton Farms jumped at the chance to purchase this massive stud from Clinton and Guy Laflin (North Camp Angus Ranch) in Denver last January. Always on the lookout for great sires, Rob was impressed by Silver Star’s ease of fleshing, massive, deep muscle pattern and a pedigree that looks very different from their herd and, indeed, many of today’s most heavily used sires. With Active Duty 0010X proving so successful, it made sense to purchase a great son backed by a brilliant dam, and Hamilton Farms made the investment. And are giving a great benefit to BtL7 by first-rate donation. Silver Star was the $45,000 high selling bull of the 2016 Denver bull sale. He epitomizes what the Laflins are trying to produce at North Camp: phenotypically excellent cattle that possess balanced numerical values while producing a consistent product for their customers. His pictureperfect dam, Malsons Jilt 13Z, traces back to the first “Jilt” Clinton’s grandfather purchased in 1956. 13Z was the 2013 NILE Junior Show Grand Champion Female in Billings, MT. Silver Star is co-owned with a group of progressive breeders who sought out his maternal influence and strength as well as his power in design. Early calf reports have been favourable for moderate birth weights and explosive growth through to weaning. Silver Star pushes forward your maternal agenda without giving up muscle or eye appeal. Pugh Farms, the only Canadian syndicate member, had their first calf in January; reports from Edgerton are top notch. Silver Star was the NWSS Senior Champion Bull in Denver this year. Spring possession and one-third semen interest sold to Hamilton Farms/Semex in the Denim & Diamonds sale for $51,000. From them… to you!

BtL 4 featured the first Hot Lotto semen released and it set our semen record: $900/straw to Poplar Meadows; this remains our record for high selling semen. At Bohrson’s “New Year’s Resolution” sale earlier this year, demand had leveled off a bit but still commanded high interest at $285/straw. BSF Hot Lotto 1401 is maybe the most complete son of Cash to date. His tremendous thickness, soundness, bone, foot size and fleshing ability make him exceptional. He was the most popular display bull in Denver at the NWSS in 2015. He is a maternal brother to the two-time Reserve Grand Champion Bull in Denver, BSF Opportunist Z5. Hot Lotto’s presence and unique pedigree dictate popularity among seedstock and commercial breeders alike. He sires progeny that are demanded in all circles of our industry and put money in the pocket of those who use him. Hot Lotto’s dam has proven herself and the entire cow family are terrific producers. The Hot Lotto bulls were very well received in Hamilton Farms’ bull sale last year with three of the top selling bulls going to ST Genetics, Alta Genetics (see Lot 364) and HBH Farms in MB; these three sires averaged over $40,000! The Hot Lotto bulls in Hamilton’s Denver pen were certainly features again this year, proving he is still a hot commodity! Just look at these results from Hamilton’s sale last March: • second high selling bull HF Cloud-9 67E to Poplar Meadows Angus for $32,500; • HF Hidden Figures 53E to Alta Genetics for 20,000; • HF Hot Ticket 38E to Northway Cattle for $19,000; • second high selling heifer HF Rosebud 64E to David H McDougall for $8,500.

He sold in the 2016 Hinman sale for $350,000. When the ‘dust settled’, Hamilton Farms was able to acquire the Canadian semen rights on this powerful prospect. He has an outcross pedigree, and is a high performance, big bodied, wide based, heavy quartered individual, who is simply impressive in his makeup. Cowboy Up is an outlier, a breed changer with incredible growth and performance while still maintaining traditional Angus character. His EPD profile is so impressive: top 1% for WW, YW and CW. His cow family is the definition of maternal performance. A 10% semen interest sold in the 2017 Bases Loaded sale at Coors Field during the NWSS in Denver for $120,000 to a consortium of breeders. The first Cowboy Up heifer calf sold in Canada through the “Power & Perfection” sale last November for $26,000 to Greenwood Angus/3G Cattle Ventures. Her full sister sold in the same sale to Kevin and Joanne Fraser for $18,000. Other progeny have been topping sales in the U.S. and the buzz is just starting with this young herd sire. The first semen offered in Canada was in Bohrson’s latest “New Year’s Resolution” sale where it averaged $625/straw. But this ‘buzz’ became a ROAR when you consider Cowboy Up’s first sales results for Hamilton Farms this spring: he sired eight of the 17 top selling bulls ($14,000+), including the first and second highest selling bulls for $34,000 and $32,500. These eight averaged $21,063. He sired two of the six top selling heifers ($7,000+), including the highest seller at $16,000 and another at $7,000. This isn’t just ‘buzz’; this is a revolution! Maybe you need to “Cowboy Up” and get on board!

Your choice of three (3) official Canadian Angus Wendy Risdale prints
At the celebration of our centennial in 2005, CAA unveiled our ‘first-ever’ official art: two works by Wendy Risdale. 10 years later, with very few of those prints left, we commissioned new ‘official’ art. Today all four of the originals hang on the walls at Angus Central and we are offering you the chance to own a piece of our “Maternal Watch” “Time Out” history in one of the few ‘Master of the Herd’ “Master of the Herd” (Framed canvas) (Framed canvas) (framed & matted) Red Angus prints left from 2005; one of the new Red Angus ‘Time Out’ prints or the new Black Angus ‘Maternal Watch’ print. Master of the Herd is matted and framed. Time Out and Maternal Watch are printed on canvas and framed attractively in rustic dark barnwood. A great addition to any collection… they would look beautiful hanging on your wall.

Collectible plate

These unique Angus Hycroft Pottery memorabilia are trimmed in 22K gold with a rust colour enhanced pattern, featuring an Angus bull as the subject. From the ‘Rob Holowaychuk Collection’ and donated to us by our Foundation Executive Director Belinda Wagner (2017 BMO Women in Agriculture award recipient, by the way!), please see these two special Hycroft plates. Hycroft China Ltd. operated from 1955 until 1989 at the former plant site of Medicine Hat Potteries. Mayor Harry Veiner is credited with taking over the failing operation and producing sanitary ware such as toilets and sinks and their well-known dishes, such as these plates. The plant is now part of The Friends of Medalta world-class museum in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Both plates are in excellent shape. You always had to open the box and unwrap with care around Rob’s house! He scoured the antique shops and garage sales of our country in search of these rare Angus plates, and Belinda is donating the ‘fruits of his search’ in BtL7. In honouring one of our Foundation’s greatest supporters, the memory and meaning of Rob’s appreciation for these collectibles is even more valuable than the plates themselves. Please consider making them part of your Angus collection!

Custom-made quilt

Handmade by Gail Wildman, one of our long-time Red Angus breeders and the original secretary for CRAPS in this 50th year of Red Angus in Canada. Very cool donation we would say. A few of us have been fortunate buyers of this donation at worthy causes in the past, including myself at the 2009 Red Round-Up and Past CAF Chair Sylvia Jackson at the 2016 Building the Legacy. Sylvia chose blues for her color and I was more than pleased with Gail’s choice of autumn colours for mine… isn’t it awesome? Quilting is getting to be very unique art that most of us can only marvel at.

Aberdeen Angus Cow Model No. 1563

Issued 1959–1989
In the summer of 2015, Donna made what we believe is the largest donation of global Angus memorabilia to our national headquarters, Angus Central, with the provision that items be sold over time as a fundraiser for the Canadian Angus Foundation. Our Foundation has long been a preferred charity for JD Farms; John and Donna worked tirelessly to promote the ‘embryo lottery’ that culminated at the 2009 Forum and represented our first major Foundation fundraiser. Donna is excited to see she and John’s collected Angus ‘works’ find new homes in the coming years. This “Beswick” figurine is an antique collectible. They have not been produced since the 1980s and are ‘as scarce as hen’s teeth’. Only in Building the Legacy can you find such items in Canada, thanks to Donna! The figurine will be on display in Comox and the buyer can either take it or we will arrange for delivery to you.
