Welcome from the SAAC President What an exciting year it has been for the Southern Alberta Angus Club. Last year’s futurity brought back 10 heifer entries to the Taber Junior Livestock Classic which were purchased in 2012. Congratulations to Kaitlyn Bolduc, Taber Animal Clinic and Tracy Iwan our top three winners. Last December was the first time we changed our annual meeting to a Christmas supper night, which was well attended including our CAA, CEO and AAA president. It was a very enjoyable evening of information and fellowship by all. Next, our 10th annual golf tournament was a huge success. With 152 golfers and 180 for the supper it was an excellent opportunity for commercial breeders, purebred breeders, and representatives of the industry to mix and mingle. Again, we would like to extend a great thank you to Milliken Farm Supplies for being our corporate sponsor this year and congratulations to Kim Theilen on winning the New Holland Rustler! Our 27th Annual Chinook Classic Angus Sale has the makings of being the best ever. With new consigners, long-time consigners, and consigners that have taken a break and are now back, the quality at this sale is sure to be second to none. I have had the opportunity to personally view a majority of the heifers myself and am very excited with the entries. With the outstanding selection of pedigrees offered for sale here, the Angus industry can only move positively forward. Thank you to Lauron Angus for their generous donation of the heifer this year. What an excellent chance for the winner to pick either a quality red or black heifer. Tickets again will be sold in $10 donations per ticket. If you are unable to attend this sale, but do not want to miss this fantastic opportunity, do not hesitate to give myself, or any board member a call before the sale and we will be sure to get you entered. Again this year we are offering our youth the 10% junior discount. Helping our juniors in purchasing top genetics as offered at this sale is a positive investment in the future of our industry. The cattle will be available for viewing Tuesday night and all day Wednesday. Drop in any time to ask questions or just visit and enjoy some great Angus hospitality from the consigners. Do not hesitate to contact the consigners or myself with any questions regarding the sale. We’ll be sure to see you there! - Doug Domolewski

Welcome from Bouchard Livestock International Welcome to the 27Th Annual Chinook Classic Sale. Since I have been involved in this sale, this year easily has the most interest in terms of consignments and the number of consignors that I have seen to date. The farm visits to select the cattle were very enjoyable and there appeared to be a genuine effort to take the 2013 sale to the highest level possible. Many of us were very pleased with the results of 2012 and, as we all know, every year brings new expectations. The cattle on offer are a very impressive offering with females that will easily fit in many replacement pens. The Junior discount is once again in place and this may be a good place to purchase that Junior show heifer project. I invite all of you to join us for supper and the Chinook Sale on October 23. All of the Bouchard staff will be available to discuss the offerings and your potential Angus cattle needs. We look forward to visiting with you. - Brian Bouchard

We selected Hemisphere to use in our AI program because of his outstanding performance and carcass numbers. He is a long-bodied, very deep, stout individual. Her dam is one of those cows that always brings home a calf in the top 10%. A smooth, stout, eye-appealing heifer that would be a super addition to any herd. After ten years of production she continues showing a perfect udder, excellent feet, and great condition. 20A was Brian’s first pick of the pen as she stands out in a crowd. Like her dam, this young heifer was designed to work hard and look “dam good” doing it! SOO 55S was a Red Roundup purchase that has really been one of the solid producers that quietly does her job, and brings in the top-end calves every year. If you’ve followed the success of Dwayjo Gladiator 32L, and his elite dam “Dwajo Superior 4H” you’ll see why she’s such a sure shot cow. These were the type of females that made the Soo Line dispersal so successful. On the top side, Lone Stone Pursuit 81W sure complimented this cow. The first bulls sold this spring were the Pursuit sons, admired for their extra growth, bone and dispostion. The 81W’s dominated the pen show at Denver, winning both Champion female and bull pens. Like last year’s Pursuit heifer to Jessica Anderson, this baby has an awesome sweet disposition - maybe she can be your junior project whose progeny will be the kind that will pay your way through college ! She just looks for a pet and “maybe a bag of chips if you got’em”. She has a strong hip as well to complete the package. I have been reluctant to let any Wrangler daughters go as we got a limited amount of semen before he was injured and had to be put down. The first Wrangler daughters have been impressive, with beautiful udders, excellent feet, and raised outstanding calves as first calf heifers. 6Z should go out and be an honest producer bringing in a good calf every year. I didn’t realize till I started writing the footnotes on this heifer calf that she was so closely related to the bred heifer we have in the sale as well. Pretty cool to see that kind of consistency and quality come through in the bulls a guy chooses. Scarlett 3048A is also a direct Endorse 639X daughter. Endorse sold through the SSS bull sale to Brad Arrowsmith and Kenny Forster for $41,000, and we were fortunate enough to pick up the exclusive Canadian semen rights on him. As I write this, I still need to go out and get her out of the pasture, so she maybe a little green for any fall shows, but she has the look of a heifer that you could put a halter on and stand up near the top of any ring you bring her into. If the new owner so wishes, we will throw in 1 straw of Rollin Deep to be used only on this heifer. ADJ ADJ CANADIAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION EPDS BW WT YW BW WW YW MILK TM CE MCE 2.6 55 84 10 37 -2.0 1.5

There’s a lot of performance packed into this heifer’s pedigree. An Endorse 639X daughter out of a Take Notice dam that goes back to our Old Faithfull U2 Wanted bull. Not many bulls are known for producing as good of daughters as they do sons, or vice-versa, but this heifer’s lineage is full of bulls who have done just that. We bought the Canadian semen rights on Endorse 639X because we felt we needed to infuse some power on some of our more maternal bloodlines. Judging from the set of heifers he’s leaving, and the great set of bulls we have by him, he appears to be another bull that can do it all. Throw in the service to the $33,000 Rollin Deep bull and the opportunities are endless.

Rollin Deep is a bull that we think will go out and breed true to his looks. Not many bulls (of any breed) can compete with him when it comes to the “ set of pants “ he has. He was originally a $33000 purchase for ½ interest out of the Bieber Red Angus 2012 bull sale, where we partnered with Silver Spur and brought the bull home to walk the pastures at Thistle Ridge. We expect to have in excess of 50 natural born calves from him next spring. The 1st semen offered for sale on him fetched as high as $350 per straw, both in the US and Canada. A rare and exciting chance to share the “Bess” family comes in this embryo lot. 043 is a big ol’ deep-ribbed, broody, sound, excellent hair-coated performance cow! Her first calf, a carbon copy of her, walked through this very ring last year and was co-top selling lot, going to Mike Hein in Iowa for $5,000. The dam of 043 needs no introduction to the Red fraternity. She was a rare female in that she was the division winner at Agribition as a heifer calf, bred heifer, two year old, and in that year won the “Royal Bank Supreme Beef Female” award. Her daughters are tightly-held posessions, and her sons have averaged over $10,000 most notable being the Semex bulls Detour and Cut Above. On the top side, we only see the consistency strengthened by her sire Divide 8J who is designated ‘elite’. We, along with Minburn Angus, were extremely excited to be able to own this guy in his ‘golden years’. “Cookie” was high selling bull at the Willabar Dispersal at 7 years of age. His progeny also topped most divisions both male and female. There’s so much goodness in 36R. He’s structurally faultless, at 9 years of age, he still moved like a cat, had a big deep-heeled foot that had never been touched. He had large, even testicles, easy fleshing, mellow disposition and eye appeal to burn. Interesting to note that his dam produced to 16 years of age, and his grandam to 15 years of age. What’s also exciting is that he ranks in the top 1% of the breed in weaning and yearling EPD’s and has a +22 for milk ! Late in the breeding season we found out he had a red gene - imagine the possibilities of a Red Dateline bull calf with the proven genetics already built in !
