The Foundation is governed by a board of directors who are heavily involved in the Simmental industry and who have a vested interest in educating youth, developing leadership, and encouraging young people to be a part of the agriculture industry.

Testimonials about the YCSA Program

The YCS program was my door to the Simmental breed. As a young person the welcoming breeders and families at the provincial and national YCS shows were what got me involved in the breed. The friendships and "As one of the very early members of the Saskatchewan YCS, there opportunities made are a few things that stand out for me. One being the friendship's that because of the YCS program are ones that were started then and still continue today. Back then the standing last a lifetime. Now that our kids President was invited to the Saskatchewan Simmental Association board meetings, I remember the first one and how nervous I was the are old enough to participate in the YCS night before knowing that I would be seated beside all of these very program, we get to see it from another important Simmental Breeders. Then to top it off I was asked what I aspect. The excitement and thought about one of the discussion topics . WOW. One more thing , involvement in the Simmental breed thanks to does anyone remember the Donkey up in the Queensbury at Agribi- the YCS program is still exactly the same. Garth Rancier tion. Thanks it was a great experience." Marlin LeBlanc

The Young Canadian Simmental program is one that I will always be thankful to have been a part of. Not only did it allow me to grow my cattle knowledge and skills, but my time spent as President on the Provincial and National boards was extremely valuable. Looking back my biggest take away from the program is the friendships that I was able to create with other Simmental breeders & YCSA members across Canada. Those are memories that you just don't forget. Having been a part of the YCSA program will always be a highlight for me, and now I look forward each year to seeing the next generation of Simmental youth. Stacy Young

Testimonials about the YCSA Program

Hi my name is Bobbi-Gayle Hosegood and I am owner of Yellow Rose Cattle. I am very proud and honoured to of been asked to talk about my experience of the YCS program. I became a member back in 1982 and not only competed at the shows but was on the Alberta board. The YCS program was very influential in my becoming a Simmental breeder as the knowledge that was forthcoming from fellow members and the support of the Simmental breeders made it very inviting. I feel the YCS program today is very focused on education for the future aswell as how the past has shaped the breed and breeders. The tools that are introduced so the youth can get the most out of the Simmental breed in Agriculture is amazing. The YCS truly helps shape our youth and helps prepare them for the Agricultural Industry as a whole. I am very proud to be an alumni of the program and proud to have my son J.R now in the program. Bobbi-Gayle Hosegood

My name is Ashley Pearson and I grew up showing purebred red & black Simmental cattle with my brother, Duncan, and parents, Merrill & Bev. They continue to operate Pearson Farms at Calmar, AB and the next generation, my sweet nephew Avry, is really loving life on the farm and all his animals. When I look back on my youth I am so thankful for the memories made and the friendships I built while taking part in YCSA events. I was a member of the Alberta YCSA Board and the National YCSA Board. I really enjoyed coordinating the Wild Rose Classic with our board. The organization, budgeting, & public speaking skills I acquired through those events have served me well in my agriculture business career. Participating in the National Classic gave me the opportunity to explore many new towns & cities across Canada and meet new friends along the way. I was even awarded an opportunity to attend the American Junior Simmental Association (AJSA) Show in Kentucky one summer. I loved the adventure of going to a new province or new town every summer for a show and to this day I still have a passion for traveling. I am sure that those experiences also helped me to become more confident and more of an extrovert, which made transitioning from small town high school to big city university that much easier. Matt Bates

2017 Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship Winner

Jessica currently attends West Texas A&M University, completing her Masters of Animal Science, with a specialization in meat science. She grew up on a mixed commercial beef and grain operation, located west of Ponoka, Alberta. Jessica remains actively involved in the agriculture industry, honored as a 2016 Cattlemen’s Young Leader, in addition to volunteering her time with the Classroom Agriculture Program. Jessica was raised through the Alberta 4-H Beef program and competed in Junior Shows across Western Canada. Jessica has grown up around the Simmental breed, and is currently working with Simmental genetics in her Master’s thesis. “Being selected as a recipient of the 2017 Friends of Canadian

My name is Matt Bates and I was raised on a purebred cow-calf operation near Lindsay, Ontario, which forged my passion for beef cattle and the agricultural industry. I am currently in my second year, studying Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph), after completing 4 years of an undergraduate Animal Science degree. I have a particular interest in large animal medicine and reproduction and I hope to pursue these areas as a future career. The opportunities afforded to me through 4-H and junior beef breed organizations have been numerous, and the life lessons that I’ve learned through such have been foundational. Whether it was a junior national show, a leadership conference, an international trip, or a public speaking competition, the friendships and mentorships established along the way reflect the true value of such programs. My words are not enough to express the level of appreciation I have for the people that have contributed to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation, but I hope they can speak to the magnitude of benefits that are created through its’ youth scholarships and programming, and the value of these opportunities to the future of the industry. The FCSF Scholarship will have an immense impact on my academic journey, and I am extremely grateful to those who have made it possible.

Breana McKenzie

2017 Dr. Allan A. Dixon Memorial Scholarship Winner

Breana grew up on a farm near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta where her family raised bison and beef cattle, as well as quarter horses. Her upbringing instilled many important life lessons including the value of a hard day’s work, a great appreciation for life and developed her passion for the care of animals. After high school she began taking a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in order to pursue a career as a veterinarian. Her studies have taken her to the University of Calgary but she continues to hold on to her roots and connections to the agriculture industry through volunteer work and helping out on the family farm.

Michaela Lievre

2017 Dr. Allan A. Dixon Memorial Scholarship Winner

Michaela grew up in a rural area, where she always had an interest in cattle and agriculture. Michaela’s involvement in 4-H was her first exposure to Simmental cattle as her club was heavily influenced by the breed. Her experiences to date have facilitated countless opportunities to network with likeminded people who share her passion for agriculture and those who take pride in their community and heritage. Michaela looks forward to being able to give back to the industry and share her passion. Mackenzie Skeels

2017 Trevor Vance Memorial Scholarship Winner

Growing up with my family at Anchor D Ranch Simmentals just outside of Rimbey has expanded my passion for the rural way of life. My first cow was given to me; from there I have bought, traded, and raised cows, extending my purebred herd to 20 head. I have spent nine years in 4-H, where I have held the positions President, Secretary, and Historian. One of my favorite volunteering events is to cook at the Ronald McDonald House. I have achieved the Alberta 4-H Award of Excellence Platinum Medallion and have the honor of being selected to attend the 2018 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress in Ottawa, ON. I have loved my last three years being a part of the Alberta YCSA board, last year being the Vice President. It has been wonderful to be a part of the National YCSA Cattle Show for the last 5 years, and winning 3 aggregate titles is very humbling. With my 2nd aggregate title, the Canadian Simmental Association sent me to represent the YCSA in Iowa at a 900 head American Junior Simmental cattle show, I look forward to one day being a board member for the National YCSA Board so that I can give back to the association that has given so much to me. Currently I am enrolled in Red Deer Collage in the Media Studies and Professional Communication Coarse. Within this course, I am acquiring the skills to become a successful marketer and spokesperson for agriculture.

Lewis Farms is proud and honoured to donate a black bred heifer in this year’s Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Auction. This donation female selection means a lot to everyone involved at Lewis Farms. We knew we had to put our best foot forward in this selection. Lewis Farms owes a great deal of its success and long term dedication to the Simmental breed and more specifically the Canadian Simmental breeders and commercial supporters of the breed. The female we have selected is LFE Charo 615D. LFE 615D is homozygous polled and heterozygous black. 615D is a member of the recognized and most proven cow family at Lewis Farms. More Charo daughters exist under the LFE prefix than any other cow family. LFE Charo 604G has been the anchor to our black program and can be found 4 generations back in this donation female’s pedigree. High caliber sons from the Charo family include LFE Riddler, LFE Style, and LFE Boardwalk to name a few. 615D represents the first crop of LFE McDavid sired, bred females for sale. Sire LFE McDavid was purchased by Spring Creek Simmentals in the spring of 2016. 615D is bred to LFE Night Hawk and pregnancy tested safe for an early January born calf. LFE Night Hawk is the high selling, homo polled and hetero black calving ease specialist, who was purchased by Bouchard livestock and TSN Simmentals last spring. We look forward to this summer’s AGM and are excited for the Foundation Auction.

After being named the NWSS Junior Grand Champion Female and her first flush producing $106,000 in progeny sales for Griswold, she has gone on to be a very productive donor to build a program around. Most notably her daughter, RF Joy’s Elegance 747E was the dominant heifer calf in Canada in 2017 winning FarmFair Legends of the Fall Grand Champion and National Agribition Heifer Calf Champion as she is one of the most popular Simmental females to be shown in some time. We are offering 3 -#1 embryos out of are LWC Miss Ranger 10B donor and sired by Crossroad Radium. Miss Ranger has done an amazing job, with three daughters to date. She milks very well and keeps a tidy udder while producing pounds. These embryos are sired by the proven Radium bull that produces very well. We implanted 5 of these embryos this spring and are sure they will work when they hit the ground.

After invested in one of the most popular donors at HPF during their 2016 sale and couldn’t be more excited about SS Empriss 302Y after viewing her progeny in the 2017 HPF Dispersal. Since the dispersal, we have had numerous inquiries to sell this outstanding donor as her sons and daughters were in high demand and highly accepted through the sale. As we flushed many cows through the summer, Empriss 302Y was always the one we widened the alley and barely fit through the chute as she has unreal dimension and mass while still being very feminine in her type with a beautiful udder attachment and strong foot. With 4 fresh sire choices to choose from, we feel these genetics can add shear value to any program.

The strength and success of the Flirtin For Certain cow family needs no introduction and was a key factor in our decision to purchase Stimulus. We are really impressed with his first calf crop. They come out easy to an early gestation with a lot of vigour. This past spring we have used Stimulus heavily in our cow herd again but also have bred him to some heifers as we are confident in his calving ease. We have not sold many straws of semen on Stimulus so here is a chance to get in on the ground floor of a great young herd sire. HOMO POLLED/ HOMO BLACK

he National has always been a standout individual with his softness through the middle, his heavy muscle pattern, his large foot, and overall balance and presence. He stems from two of the greatest breeding pieces we have used over the past few years, both LFE Riddler and LFE Violet. The Riddler progeny have been so consistent within our herd, calving with ease, having an early growth curve, females being feminine with great udder attachments, and bulls being masculine and stout, with above size testicles and performance. Our first Riddler daughters are now in production and have superb balance to their udders with nice size teets, are milking heavy, and the type of females you love to analyze. Violet adds in the great Cobra pedigree and type to "The National," and adds her extra fleshing ability, very sound structure, and extension through the front end. Limited semen packages were sold on The National last fall, and this will be the only other semen sold in Canada on him this year. We decided at a young age that The National bull was going to retained in herd for our own use. Not only does he offer a tremendous phenotype and genotype, but check out his EPDS- Top 15% for CE, API, and REA, Top 3% for WW, YW, and MCE, Top 10% for MWWT and CW, and Top 2% for TI! We have not found a black bull that reads like him! He is Homo polled, and Hetero black.
