Foreword Welcome to LaBatte Simmentals 39th Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale on Friday, March 1st, 2019 at Johnstone Auction Mart, four miles west of Moose Jaw on #1 highway. Again we would like to thank all the bidders and buyers from our past sales for the continued support and effort you make each year to attend our sale. It is very much appreciated. As I write this foreword in mid January it has really been a nice winter so far, milder temperature than usual and less wind than usual. This really helps the feed piles and makes life a little easier. Calf and cow prices have risen quite a bit in January with the heavy calves bringing almost the same dollars per pound as the lighter calves. Those big, soggy Simmental and Simmental cross calves are bringing a premium and adding extra profit dollars in the commercial people’s pockets. There’s been some changes in our sale again this year as Meadow Acres Farms, our guest consignor for the past five years, have grown their own numbers where they are able to have their own sale on their farm in mid March. The Fornwalds were great guest consignors bringing quality bulls to our sale. They believed in the same values as us, focusing on the commercial industry first, purchasing bulls to better raise the quality and kind the commercial people are looking for. Thanks Dustin, Kirsten, Blair and Laurel for all the hard work you did at our sale and all the best to you in your future endeavors. With that brings our new guest consignor, East Poplar Simmentals, Kyron & Kelsey Manske of Coronach, SK. These young, enthusiastic Simmental breeders purchased fifty cows from us this fall with the option of putting some bulls in our annual bull sale. They will have ten bulls in this year’s sale and will have more in the coming years. Many of you might know Kelsey already as she is the YCSA Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association and does a great job with the young kids coming up in the livestock industry. Kyron worked for me one spring and summer a few years back and was a very good, fun hired man. I’ve known the Manske family for a lot of years and they are good, hard working people. I think they are, and we are for sure, pretty excited having them as our new guest consignor. As for our bull sale offering this year it will consist of 54 thick, meaty, red, black and fullblood bulls. We will be selling our first sons of the $100,000 Wheatland Bentley bull that ourselves, Circle 7, Soderglen and Cowtrax purchased in Wheatland’s 2017 Bull Sale. His progeny are only available at these operations. He’s made our black bull pen the best it’s ever been. Our red pen is headed up by some new genetics also, first sons off our Agribition Champion, Captain Scream. They are thick, meaty, deep sided bulls that will catch your eye. Also the first sons of the R Plus Red Century bull that we purchased with Circle 7 in 2017. In our judgment he was in the top 2-3 red bulls sold that year and are very satisfied with his progeny. Added to the red section SVS Brooks and IPU Red Deputy, the reds are one of the most consistent groups we’ve had. The fullbloods are headed by the French Attack sons, Mr. Adonis sons, Solstice sons and a very good, polled Blueprint son. These fullblood bulls make a great cross with your black and red cows producing those sought after baldy calves. In the open purebred heifer division we will be selling 18 top replacement heifers, red and black. Barry P.S. Grandkids are doing great. They’re all growing like weeds and are full of energy. Brodyn, the oldest, was fifteen years old in November, is six feet tall and a great help around the farm and the cattle. The other boys are into hockey and, get this, “horses”. They’re into 4-H, both grain and beef. The girls are busy with karate and basketball. They brought Grandpa pizza tonight for supper after basketball practice and, of course, we found a little ice cream for dessert. We’re so lucky that they all live so close and go to school in Gladmar as we get to see them quite often.

In-Herd Semen

LaBatte Simmentals & East Poplar Simmentals reserve the right to collect semen on any bull sold through this sale. The semen collection will be at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience. Any semen collected will be for in herd use only.

Delivery

At the buyer’s option and risk, LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals will take purchaser’s bulls home, feed them under their management and deliver them FREE anywhere in the prairie provinces to your nearest central location. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery will take place between April and the middle of May. For bull buyers outside the prairie provinces, bulls will be delivered at a reasonable charge. The bulls are the property of the buyer as soon as they are sold. Therefore, buyers must insure their animals for the time they are at LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals. The heifers will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale.

HOMO POLLED. This Captain Scream son has been a standout since birth. He looked great as a calf, great in the summer and continued on through weaning and still is a standout today. His mother is a solid red Liner 56U cow with a great udder. In last year’s sale her Westcott son sold to the good purebred operation of Pearson Simmentals at Calmar, AB. She also has two sons working in the commercial herds of Frank Arnal, Eastend, SK and Rolling H Farms, Biggar, SK. 83F himself has an excellent body type, long, great rear quarter, is deep bodied, loose hided, big topped and has big testicles. He had an actual weaning weight in early September of 1010lbs. We think a lot of this homo polled herdsire prospect and think he has a great future.

HOMO POLLED. A dark red Dillinger 80B son out of a first calf Bartender daughter going back to a really good Red Ace cow. This is Brodyn’s bull. His mom and dad gave him the good 121D cow as a heifer calf for all the good work he does on the farm and with the cattle. He can run any piece of equipment on the farm, helps with the cattle, and we think he’s a pretty nice kid too. He’s been rewarded with this good, dark red Dillinger son who should be a calving ease specialist. He’s very smooth made, long bodied and has a really nice uddered Bartender daughter for a mother. He’s in the top 3% of the breed for calving ease EPD, top 5% for birth weight, top 2% for maternal calving ease and top 5% for API.

He was so loose made, deep bodied, great haired and thick quartered. We think this bull will sire some really nice calves with his type, hair coat, moderate 90lb birth weight and style.

They were using him in their heifer pen. 31F is long, smooth, stylish and has a great hair coat like his dad. This bull would throw some excellent replacements and really good steers.

This will be her fifth son selling with her first four going to the good commercial herds of Trevor Jones, SK, Triple T Ranch, SK, Prairie Sky Land & Cattle, SK and La Casse Farms, SK. She has a daughter at Robb Farms and is the grandmother to the Lot 2 (IPU 7F) bull in this year’s sale. This Scream calf is dark red and smooth made and with a nice low 90lb birth weight should be a calving ease bull.

His sire, Black Edition, has been used very successfully on heifers for many years now. We bought 71F’s dam as a bred heifer in McMillen Ranching’s fall 2017 female sale. She was bred Edition and the resulting calf is a very good, moderate framed, thick made, great haired, solid red son. He will be a non-diluter, being out of two black parents which means you can breed black cows to him and you’ll either get red calves or black calves, no grays. This is a bull we liked all summer and still do.

Circle 7 Ranch and ourselves were the runner up bidder on him and we’re very fortunate that Mike Imler let us buy a semen pack in him. We’re very happy with his calves. He calves very good, sires dark red calves and they have some performance. This thick made, dark red, good haired Brooks calf has an excellent set of EPDs and with his 78lb birth weight should be a candidate for the heifer pen.

She just calved a few days ago and has a perfect udder. 72Y is one of the deepest, thickest, easy doing cows in our herd. This Red Century son will pass his great mother’s traits onto his progeny. He will sire an excellent set of male and female progeny – the cowboy kind.

If you remember, he was the $77,000 Sheriff son that sold to Kunkel Simmentals in North Dakota. He has sired some great progeny, both bulls and heifers. In last year’s sale his son, IPU Lieutenant 24E, was our high selling bull going to Hoegl Livestock and Bohrson Marketing for $53,000. His daughters have been high sellers at female production sales in 2018. We are calving his first daughters now and they have beautiful udders, are really feminine, pear shaped, great milking and are going to be some of the elite females in the breed. This Deputy son, 102F, is very impressive, dark red, thick, smooth and stylish. He’ll be easy to find sale day.

When Danny Skeels and myself purchased Precious Thing out of the Prospect Hill dispersal there was one thing I asked for and that was we flush her black at least once. What other choice of a black bull than Springcreek Liner 56U. I was hoping for some females with 56U and Precious Thing, as they would be the start of a new black cow family. Unfortunately we only got one out of the five embryos to stick but the embryo split and the recipient cow had twins, almost identical. These are a special pair of bulls, long, thick, deep, good quartered and they have great dispositions. If I was a commercial breeder, I would buy both of these bulls. They would raise consistent, thick, meaty steers and what a set of heifers for replacements. They’ll work great on traditional cows, red cows and black cows and should throw a large amount of those highly sought after baldy calves.

Durango 118F is the only bull calf we got but he’s pretty special. He has a nice, moderate birth weight of 92lbs, is so smooth made, well balanced, thick and deep, has a perfect hair coat and is structurally very good. Again, he is the kind and type we strive to raise for our purebred and commercial customers. He has a real nice balanced set of EPDs with an API in the top 20% and TI in the top 10%. He also had an actual weaning weight of 1010lbs and ranked #2 against all his contemporaries.

133F is a twin full brother to 132F and he was one of the five calves on our Holstein, “Freckles”. She did a great job on all those calves weaning this guy off at 885lbs. This 133F Priority son is really balanced nicely, and is deep and thick. He has an excellent set of EPDs, being in the top 50% in 10 of the 13 categories. He’s in the top 20% for calving ease, top 10% for weaning and yearling weights, the top 30% for API and the top 10% for TI. The baldy cattle are becoming very popular. The order buyers and feedlot operators like these cattle with a little chrome on them knowing there is probably some Simmental influence in them to give them the gain-ability and carcass values they’re looking for. And the baldy replacement females definitely bring a premium.

Having the opportunity to purchase a group of cows from one of the leading herds in Canada and be invited to one of the most anticipated sales of the bull sale season is both a dream and an honour. East Poplar Simmentals may be a new name and fresh faces to some of you so here is a little introduction. The farm is located east of Coronach, SK and we are strictly a cattle operation. In 2006, after many years of using Simmental bulls on our commercial cows, we decided to get into the purebred business. In 2014, Kyron moved back to the farm and took over the cattle operation. Today we run around 130 cows with about 110 being purebreds and the remainder commercials. Until now the bulls were mostly sold off the farm by private treaty. Besides the cattle we have some other enterprises on the go. We do custom swathing and haying, are Gallagher and Stockade dealers and Kelsey is the Program Coordinator for the National Young Canadian Simmental Association. We welcomed our baby girl Embrie into the world last September and are excited to watch her grow up in this business. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s set of bulls is likely one of our most powerful sets to date. We are proud of the bulls we have to offer in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sale and think that there is a selection of bulls which can work in many different operations. We believe in raising bulls backed by strong cow families and that is a common element across all the sire groups this year. To say we are excited about this guy would be an understatement. 802F has been a standout all summer and with a pedigree that reads like his it’s easy to understand why. The guess work is done on this guy being out of the highly proven Pashmenia 403P cow and sired by Lotto. When we purchased these embryos from Barry this was the quality we had in mind. We have two full sisters in the replacement pen and purchased another full sister in the group of cows we recently bought from Labatte’s. A full brother to this guy sold to Westway Farms through this sale a few years back for $15,500 and has been used successfully in their program. Here is a bull we have been impressed with since a calf. He’s a powerful, deep bodied, smooth made bull with a tonne of middle. We lost the Brinks 619D bull due to injury after his first year of service, but the calves we have out of him sure make us wish we had more. A lot of maternal strength behind 808F with the LRX 12Z cow on the top side who has done great things for the Muirhead program, and on the bottom side of the pedigree he comes from one of our best cow families. His dam, EPS 532C, is a moderate framed, easy doing female with a real nice udder and is quickly establishing herself as one of our favorite cows.

The Brinks 619D bull really stamped his calves with the same look and presence about them. This half blood bull is a perfect example of that; big hipped, deep bodied and loads of top. You have to appreciate how smooth shouldered he is and how he transitions into his front end. This guy strides out nicely and has style to burn. Look to 819F to add power to your calf crop while still maintaining some calving ease. The dam of 819F is a smaller framed Angus cow that weaned this guy off at 64.9% of her body weight.

Our last black heifer is a blaze faced, moderate, thick, Priority daughter that was born on Valentine’s Day. Her mother, the Black Attack 247Z cow, has had three progeny go through our bull and female sale. Her first daughter sold to Anwender Simmentals, Radville, SK in the 2015 sale. In 2016 her El Tigre son was one of our high selling bulls going to Hansen Simmental Ranch, ND and in our 2018 sale her El Tigre son sold to our good commercial bull customer Allemand Ranches, SK. Also, East Poplar Simmentals purchased her 2016 El Tigre daughter in their package of cows. Uptown Girl 158F is a really nice, feminine, great haired, pear shaped Priority daughter. These Priority daughters are just calving now and we’re really impressed with them.

She is a beautiful uddered cow and looks very much like her elite donor dam, Pocahontas 68M. In last year’s sale her heifer topped the red division with her Red Deputy daughter selling for $15,000 to KT Ranches, BC. We own this heifer 119F jointly with Bar M Simmentals, Gillette, WY. Jim purchased the 140B cow as a bred heifer at Simmsational for $35,000 and decided to leave her in Canada. Her Westcott daughter is a moderate framed, deep, angular, feminine, broody heifer with a great future ahead of her. You can already see she is going to have a perfect udder like the Pocahontas cow family does.
