This time of year, cows and hockey seems to be what our lives revolve around. Dad had a wreck last spring and busted a leg up pretty bad but after a surgery, a 2 foot chuck of rebar, some screws and a few months off we are happy to say he’s back in the saddle and back in the seat of the feed truck by 6:30 am every day. (Most days he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.) Most every one reading this will understand what I mean by most days as this farming /ranching gig has its moments but we seem to drive on and there are certainly more good ones than bad. Hats off to hard working cattlemen across North America for supplying the best quality, safest product in the world. This year is a milestone event as it is our 25th Annual Bull Sale and 50th year in the Simmental business and amazingly enough already our 15th year to offer Angus bulls in our event. For 50 years now in the Simmental business we have built cow families, and stacked genetics that work for ourselves and our commercial customers. In 50 years in the business we have never weakened or wandered off track on the type of cattle that work under our ranch conditions which are very similar to the majority of our commercial bull buyer’s operation. We have never based our genetic decision on the show ring or the flavor of the month and have never chased the extremes of any trait in one direction. First and foremost we have always paid close attention to sound structure (without this cattle will not compete under range conditions or in the feedlot). We are now working on our third time around in the alphabet. While working on the catalogue the past couple of years and again this year it is evident where the grey hair comes from as 3 sets of F progeny pop up on the screen 1974, 1996 and 2018 born progeny. From the first ½ blood born at MRL and importation of a couple of full blood cows, we have grown to over 700 purebred cows. Our cowherd is definitely the strength of our program. For 50 years we have had total commitment to strengthening our factory. Under our real world ranching conditions the top cow families continue to surface and are multiplied and the cows that don’t make the grade soon weed themselves out of the herd. Through embryo transplant and persistence it is truly amazing that out of over 700 cows the majority now all go back to a handful of cow families. What you find sale day is pen after pen of uniform bulls. Large sire groups of consistent look a like herdbulls. We are proud that almost every bull on offer is sired by bulls that walk our pastures or feature bulls we have sold and retained semen interest in. We are confident in these sires’ breeding abilities. You won’t see any banners hanging behind them in the pictures but what is behind them is once again elite cow families, proven real world pedigree, sound structure and solid data. We are heavily invested in our herdbull lineup. We guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull capable of passing a semen test by a licensed vet within 14 months of age. All bulls over 12 months of age will be semen tested as satisfactory by Sale Day. Should any MRL bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value and quality or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another MRL bull. We carry a good supply of backup bulls and will make sure you have bull power to get your cows bred. If you have a problem, notify us immediately, because we’re not happy until you are satified with your MRL bull.

SIGHT UNSEEN PROGRAM
We would love to have you join us for our annual Bull Sale at the ranch. If you can not, this program has worked well for many busy cattlemen unable to make it to our sale. With families and a bunch of cows ourselves, we realize that with hockey, 4-H, chores, frozen water bowls, cows calving and everything else it is sometimes hard to be everywhere you want to be on certain days. Each and every year we sell more bulls through this program from clean across the country to next door neighbors. The program is simple. Call us in advance (preferably a week or so) before the sale to discuss your cowherd, breeding objectives and herd bull requirements. From what we gather from talking to you about your program, we can fit you with a herdsire or herd sires with in your price ranges and suited to your needs without you leaving home. The bulls will be personally hand picked by Lee, Dave or Jim. We are a family run operation so the same person helping you pick your bull is the same person who calves, breeds, feeds and lives with these herd bull prospects and their mothers year around. We know our cowherd very well and the genetics strength of each bull on offer. Just the same as you know yours. Almost 50 years in the bull business we have gained a level of trust and integrity with our customers and have had repeat customers buy their bulls here for years and not been to a sale yet. We will get you the best bull for your program as reasonably priced as we can - you have our word on that.

Here are a few details about our operation and why we think an MRL herd sire may work for you.
* Almost 50 years in the bull business. Almost 50 years we have been committed to and stuck to producing Simmental seed stock which Will work well under your commercial conditions. Easy fleshing, structurally sound beef cattle have always been #1 at MRL. *Customer Care. We will make sure you have a bull to breed your cows to. If you run into trouble, give us a call. We will have several insurance bulls at the ranch at all times and will get you a replacement bull as soon as you need one. We also have post sale delivery on offer. For those busy cattlemen unable to make it sale day, we offer a sight unseen buyers program and pre- selection program, as well as several sale consultants to leave an order with. *Quality Not Quantity. Our operation consists of over 700 working females. The 180 bulls on offer have been selected from 350 bull calves, therefore we can be very strict when selecting our offering. The toughest thing about our bull sale will be making up the sale order. Pens full of uniform 1⁄2 and 3⁄4 brothers. * Bull Development. These bulls have been developed on a high roughage, silage, grain and ground straw/hay ration plus minerals. Our objective is to offer you sound breeding bulls ready to go to work and stay working for years to come. “Stuffing” is for the “Christmas Turkey” not “breeding bulls”. All bulls are semen tested prior to the sale so there are no surprises after you buy your herd bull(s).

Terms - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. We reserve the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should any purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, we reserve full power to resell the animal to the best advantage either publicly or privately without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. Disputes - Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decisionin such matter is final. Purchaser’s Risk - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. We strongly recommend the purchaser insure their purchase(s) at time of purchase. Announcements - Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements. Certificate of Registry - A registration/recordation certificate issued by the Canadian Simmental Association.Canadian Angus Association and duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer of each animal after settlement has been made. Our red pen for 2019 is filled with consistency from end to end and everything our customers have come to expect and more. The Capone and Whiskeys have been the talk of the barn the past couple years and they are for sure every bit as strong this year and will be affordable for commercial cattlemen. Fresh new genetics for our repeat customers this year by R Plus Venom, a proven $50,000 sire we were fortunate to acquire and fits nicely in our breeding program. He is consistent moderate birth, growth and maternal. As well as a large group by the Rust 18C sire that will turn some heads. They are plum stout, big ribbed and super sound made. The BBS Load M Up sire first sons will sell and will garner some attention. Long, stout and packed full of performance. He will be a valuable breeding piece moving forward. This may be a bold statement, but this fella may be the most intriguing red herd bull prospect we have raised to date. Phenotypically he is hard to fault. He is totally balanced. From every angle, sound to the ground and can really travel, and has that big time presence and herdbull head and look that sets the great ones apart. On paper he is really impressive! His dam is powerful and may have been the best heifer we calved last spring. Her grandam is the 632P female who is a maternal sister of our 470U donor and the 863S donor who is also the dam to the 477U donor here at MRL. The Missile pen of bulls last year were an impressive bunch for sure but in I’m telling you, don’t miss the group for 2019 as they are even stronger. I’m not sure we have used a black sire that is as consistent. Low birth, ideal frame and pound the scale down. 2 years running they would be our heavyweight sire group in both the bull and heifer pens. This fella just might be my pick of the group! His picture doesn’t do him justice but with limited time for pictures and 500 cows getting in full swing calving you will have to come see him in person to get a handle on how complete he really is. His dam is one of our most prolific Black Edition daughters and if you’ve followed our program at all there are big shoes to fill. We have not been in the Angus seedstock business for as long as we have the Simmental business but as it doesn’t seem that long, 2019 will be the 15th year to offer Angus bulls in our event. We were lucky to start with a tremendous group of cows and have used the same no-nonsense approach as with the Simmental growing our herd by multiplying our most elite cow families and investing a huge amount of time and money In herdbull selection. We are honoured to have raised bulls selling to some of the premiere breeders in the breed as well as sires for more than 1 stud that have gone on to be elite breeding bulls in the business. Our main focus has been to supply elite calving ease and performance sires for our commercial customers. The benefits from the Simm/Angus cross is undeniable and offer our customers an opportunity to select elite herdbulls in both breeds at our sale, one day. We are excited about this group of Angus bulls for 2019. Led off by the first sons by the $75,000 Cockburn Assassin sire, they are an impressive group. Outcross pedigreed, moderate bw and tons of length and muscle shape. A couple of big time herdbulls in this group. A dozen sons of the $102,000 U2 Renown sire will headline the performance bulls and are a must-see group with an abundance of hip and muscle. We’re calving the first Renown daughters this winter. They are beautiful, tidy uddered, powerful made young females. Calving ease heifer bulls by the exciting outcross Razor, generator, Redeem and MRL 98D bulls will lead out the red yearlings. The group of black bulls are for sure the stoutest, most consistent group we have ever offered with breed leading genetics. A couple of red carrier bulls in this group that are pretty intriguing. The coming 2 year olds will be the last major group of Lazy MC Forum sons we will offer. We lost Forum this summer and believe he was the ideal Angus sire. Oozing with Angus character, muscle shape and overall balance. His calving ease credentials are top of the breed, yet his sons display so much shape and substance.
