Welcome to the Shades of the Prairies 10th Anniversary Sale. I clearly remember the early discussions, as we were encouraged by the initial consignors, the need for a front-pasture genetics type of sale in this area. Shades has certainly stood the test of time and developed into that first-class event breeders were striving for. Cattle from Shades sales have gone on and become feature cows in some of the leading programs in the country. These frontend females have definitely impacted show strings as well. The 2012 offering will present itself as a group worthy of a 10th Anniversary event. The bred heifers are down right impressive in terms of type and pedigree, carrying services from breed-leading AI sires with exact breeding dates to proven walking herd bulls. The open heifers, from top to bottom, possess as much potential as anything that will be brought to the marketplace this fall. The embryo lots will represent some of the most proven genetics in the Simmental industry. If you want those fancy performance females and front-end bulls for your bull sales, these embryo lots present that opportunity. I want to commend the consignors for the extra effort they have put into the 2012 catalogue. JoAnna has put together one of the quality books of the season for the 2012 Shades event. From everyone at MRL, welcome to the prestigious Shades of the Prairies sale in Brandon. As you may know, we are hosting MRL Herdbuilders 2012 bred heifer and complete dispersal of our spring calving cows at the ranch December 8th featuring about 170 head of bred females. We have committed our feature bred heifers and our time to this sale for 2012. Therefore, we will not have any live lots in Brandon for Shades. With the tremendous group of consignors and cattle at Shades year in and year out, we didn’t want to miss this year’s event, so for 2012 we will be offering a very special lot. We have always dug deep for our Shades consignments but have never offered anything like this. For 2012 we will offer your pick of our entire 2013 heifer calf crop. This will include all of our ET calves born as well as natural calves by any cow in our herd including the lineup of donors, their dams or progeny of them that are pictured here plus several more. The bulls pictured are a sample of the elite sires plus a few more that will be represented in our 2013 calf crop. Most of these sires are exclusive to MRL and the owners only, adding extra value to your pick. You will not be choosing a heifer calf but a donor cow to build a cow herd around to help shape your program over the next several years. You will have the opportunity to pick from over 200 elite heifer calves. Come join us next summer for some MRL hospitality and the opportunity to select our very best. Where do I start to tell you about our little Nibbsy? This is a heifer calf that really shouldn’t be leaving our farm, but we only want to offer our best when we come to town so here she is! Nibbs is an absolute sweetheart and a beautifully-made daughter of the famous Wheatland Red Ace, whose progeny are very productive and continue to dominate the show and sale rings. Nibbs is packed with performance as her beautifully-uddered, moderate-framed 4 year old dam weaned her off of native pasture weighing 727lbs without any creep feed. Shis is long, has a strong topline, and great muscle shape and thickness all in a very feminine package. Nibbs will develop a beautiful udder and will raise calves that will push down hard on the scale in the fall. With a disposition like no other, she will make an excellent addition to anyone’s herd. The Hossier Daughter out of the high selling female at Shades last year purchased by ourselves, Swan Lake Farms, and Bouchard Livestock. We don’t normally sell open heifers at Shades but after discussion with our partners felt that it might be all right to do so rather than try to agree on what to breed her to, etc, etc. 13Z possesses many of the traits we all breed for - depth of body, easy doing, sound structure and a great temperament. The Hossier bull is known for exceptional females. Combine that with this young lady coming from an awesome mother that is settling in as a consistent donor, lends a lot of predictability to this heifer’s ability to do the same.

An Enticer daughter from our 51N Bodybuilder cow that has sent two other daughters to Shades that were high sellers, going to Double Bar D Farms and to Come As U R Simmentals. Like her maternal sisters, 75Y is sound in her make up, easy doing, and super broody with lots of eye appeal and appears to be setting down a real good udder. We don’t sell a lot of females at this sale, but we do try to bring out some of our best and this good heifer is an example of just that. Icing on this deal is she is bred early to Red Western, the Beef Maker son, that we own jointly with McMillen Ranching, a bull that will definitely leave his mark on the breed. Buy with confidence as there is some real value in this female and for sure in this mating. We use Odin with great success as a calving ease bull on heifers and were pleased at how well they developed after birth. His first sons were very well received at our bull sale last spring, with 6 head averaging $5700 and as his daughters begin to mature, we can certainly see potential in them also. 6Y is very smooth made, eye appealing, good footed and sound structured. She carries plenty of width over her top and down through her hip. Lots of maternal strength in this pedigree coming from her excellent uddered Red Rock dam and stemming back to one of the best Fleckvieh cows we ever owned. Being bred early to the Red Homo Polled Lock ‘n Load son out of the great Rush cow that came out of the Remington Dispersal last fall doesn’t hurt this package either. Pounce on the competition with your Predator. An opportunity like this is very rare. We have selected 3 top heifer calves to share from our herd to go into the top of someone else’s herd. These three ¾ sisters are all daughters of Wheatland Predator 922W and out of elite Wheatland PTO 540R cows. The Braveheart cow impressed us so much with her first calf that we flushed her before we bred her back for her second natural calf. What a right decision that turned out to be. She gave us five heifer calves out of the flush and what a great set of flush sisters they have grown to be. This heifer has a broody look and is long spined and stout, square in her hip and thick all the way to the ground. Welcome to the Shades of the Prairies Sale! We are a family farm and ranch operation located near the beautiful Birdtail Valley at Solsgirth, MB. The farm entails 9,000 acres of crop land, hay and pasture. From this base we run our cow herd of 550 purebred cows. We were at odds about putting this offering into the Shades Sale but it is such an elite sale that we decided to offer something special. On December 18 we are hosting our annual female production sale in Virden where we will be offering fullblood, red and black genetics. SALE TERMS & CONDITIONS The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should the purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale, together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any any cattle will be released. The owers, Bouchard Livestock Ltd. and sale staff have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment and/or who has not made prior credit arrangements prior to the sale with the owners and/or Sale Management. BID - Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. DISPUTES - In cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. ANNOUNCEMENTS from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - The proper Registration of Recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made. SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but Sale Management or Seller assumes no risk. Exenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instruction when making settlement. GUARANTEE - All animals will carry standard breeding guarantee as specified by the applicable Canadian breed Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchased price of the animal. EXCEPTION TO GUARANTEE - In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. In the cases of bulls, they are guaranteed to breed naturally according to applicable Canadian breed Association guarantee, but no guarantee is given that semen from any bull will freeze. HEALTH - It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into his province or state. Bouchard Livestock Ltd assumes no responsibility for the health status of any animal in the sale. ACCIDENTS - Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Sale Management, auctioneer, or Association assumes any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or loss of property. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS - The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and the terms and conditions of this sale do not cover obligations of the two parties connected thereto.
