Welcome to the 3rd Annual Southwest Showcase Simmental Bull Sale. I want to congratulate this group of six Simmental seed stock producers for identifying a need and addressing it. This southwest area is one of the largest producers of commercial beef cattle in Western Canada and there really was not a Simmental bull sale addressing their needs. The Southwest Showcase breeders produce bulls right in their commercial customers backyard. They develop, feed and present them in a manner their neighbours and customers can relate to. The potential herd bulls are sired by either proven walking herd bulls or AI sires that are proven breed leaders. As in the first and second sale, the consignors will bring you bulls selected from the top of their bull pens. I urge you to visit with these hands on producers about your herd bull needs. They will be happy to show you the bulls on offer as well as the cow herd if you desire. Gary Rairdan and myself will be very familiar with the bulls on offer and would be happy to assist you in any way you require. We will be available at Heartland in Swift Current the day before the sale and, as always, welcome your calls. If you are unable to attend we would be honoured to represent your needs in a professional and confidential manner. - Brian Bouchard

EPD Explanation

EPDs are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a useful tool in selection. EPDs incorporate the individual animal with its averaged ancestry performance. EPDs do not compare across cattle breeds, they are individually based per breed. EPDs indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. Use them for guidance in the direction you want your herd to go.

EDN Simmentals

Welcome to our Third Annual Sale. We would like to thank everyone who helped make last year’s sale such a great success. We would like to express our appreciation to all buyers and bidders of our bulls. For over 40 years we have been selling bulls and working to breed hardy, trouble free cattle. We believe very strongly in building around cow families that have proven themselves to be superior. Some of these families are the 52C Red Bear daughter that was very reliable and at 16 years of age still had perfect feet & udder. Two full sisters by Americana, 29G & 10E whose influence is always seen in the bull pen and when we select replacement heifers. The 68D Blue Print cow that mysteriously shows up in the pedigree of many of the good ones. 46Z, a Universe daughter, was part of the early foundation of our herd. We have retained most of the daughters and many of the sons from these families. We have done some line breeding of these families with good results. We are pleased with the group of bulls we have to offer. Of 124 born, only 75 were retained as bulls and 21 of those were selected for this sale. We present them as we would like to buy them, not over fed, no feet trimmed, semen tested and ready to breed cows. We stand behind our bulls, and have backup bulls available, so if any problems arise please do not hesitate to call. Our cow herd receives Pyramid 5FP before breeding. All calves have received 2 shots of Pyramid 5FP, Presponse SQ, Seven Way Somnus and Ivomec. We welcome your calls or visits, any time, any day, to view the bulls at the farm.

Wide load coming through! Our top selling black at last year’s sale was also Red Texas x Dream On, selling to Town View Farms. Texan is every bit as good. He packs a lot of meat and muscle on his moderate frame with a ton of capacity to convert forage. Very sound structurally and so fluid in his movement. Unlimited potential, don’t miss him. His dam is a really good, easy fleshing cow that is one of those trouble free cows. She has an outstanding daughter retained. We woud like to reserve the right to draw semen for use in our herd.

The sire, EDN Sprout 48S, was retained as a backup bull, but has become an important part of our program. Here is an eye appealing April 1 son of EDN Vico 40U, our Homo Polled calving ease bull that sired our top selling bull last year going to Camden Cattle Co. 209Y stacks up very well against the older bulls. The first things you will notice are the deep red color, heavy hair coat and easy going nature which comes with all Vico calves. EDN Vico 40 U scored 9 out of 10 for docility on his Igenity test. Don’t overlook him because of his age. Testicles are developing well. His dam is a daughter of EDN Red Nugget, a direct son of the 52C cow. His Grand Dam, a Big Sky daughter was one of Amanda’s 4-H projects as a yearling. At 11 years old she is still a completely sound cornerstone of our herd that always brings in a top calf. 219Y is our youngest on offer, but in my opinion this bull has a lot of potential. A loose made, easy fleshing bull with a deep quarter and flank. He moves out effortlessly and tracks perfectly on faultless feet and legs. Dog guiet and real nice haircoat. EPD’s at 9.0 for C.E. and 10.6 for milk. His dam carries the genetics of 3 top cow families, 52C, 29G and 68D. She is a moderate, low maintenance cow that is flawless. Two daughters have gone into the herd and her first son went to Byron Thomas as a top seller at our 2010 sale. She is one of the reasons that we are so high on EDN Punch daughters. Look for more Punch daughters in our black section. His sire was purchased from Erixon Simmentals as the top selling bull at the Advantage Sale. He stems from Bob’s favorite cow family. Here is a calf we have had our eye on since birth. After much deliberation we have decided to offer him for sale. Built like a tank, full of meat and muscle on a moderate frame. He has huge testicles, awesome disposition and moves out well on flawless feet and legs. You need to see this bull out on cement, you can’t build a more perfect foot. 125Y will pay big dividends to his new owner. EDN Minnie 46M was another of Amanda’s 4-H projects as a heifer and Champion at the local show. She has developed into an awesome trouble free cow. Last year’s calf was one of the top sellers going to Oklahoma. We woud like to reserve the right to draw semen for in herd use.

Star is one wide load in the black division. Probably the biggest topped calf in our pen and that width extends from front to back right down over his butt to his hocks. A straight black calf with a white star on his forehead. His dam also has that white star on her face, and is an easy doing front pasture cow that has two daughters retained. His 12 year old Grand Dam, a Metro X Universe daughter, is still producing and completely sound. She is also the Grand Dam of 120Y (Lot 13). Homozygous Polled Heterozygous Black

Another really docile, completely sound bull, that can really get out and move. Nicely balanced EPD’s right across the board. You will want all the daughters for replacements. CDP Russian has earned his spot in our bull battery with the calves he has produced, both red and black and his desirable phenotype. A son was a high seller last year to Oklahoma. Welcome to the 3rd Annual Southwest Sale. We would like to start off by saying thank you to last year’s bidders and especially our buyers Goehring Ranch and Spring Lake Colony. Our goals are simple - raise moderate, easy doing cattle that excel at calving ease and press the scales come weaning. We will calve out 55 black Simmental and SimAngus this year and utilize walking herd bulls, A.I., and embryo transfer to improve the quality and consistency of our herd. We feel Simmental is the best choice to use on your British based cow herd providing that extra boost in your calf crop. If you have any questions on the bulls in the sale, feel free to give us a call and we encourage you to come by and see the dams and extended family to these bulls. Buying a herd sire is the biggest impact that you will have on your herd and knowing the background will help you make the right choice.

His sire was a bull we purchased from Scissor Creek Simmentals some years back and is one of the best sires we have ever used. His dam is a stylish, moderate, tidy uddered Trademark daughter going back to some top cow makers such as Powerstroke, Wally, and Houdini. kelara farms Welcome to the third annual Southwest Showcase bull sale. We are excited to be part of the livestock industry. With the cattle numbers being low and the demand for slaughter cows and bulls very high; we have seen better pricing for the high quality of product that our commercial customers are producing. Keeping this in mind, now is the time to replace your old herd bulls with newer genetics. Our bulls are good, honest, practical bulls raised with the commercial buyer in mind. There is no creep in their ration, and their weaning weights are produced only by their mothers. Kelly has said more than once that “the cows better be able to do it - or we are in trouble”. Due to the very wet spring we did not get the cows and calves out to pasture until late June. With this in mind, the bulls did not get weaned until October, and were only on hay until December when we introduced them to their grain ration. We realize that they might be a bit “green”, but we refuse to push them to make them look good just for sale day, as these bulls have to last! Docility, calving ease, calf vigour, weaning weights and soundness are our genetic priorities to the commercial buyer. Please feel free to give us a call. We look forward to talking to you about our program, and how these bulls will work for you!

Welcome to the third South West Showcase bull sale. Our family has lived here in the Cypress Hills since 1909 and has been raising Simmental cattle since 1971. Ryan and Julie are the fifth generation to have lived and worked on our ranch. We run a mature cow herd of 350 cows plus bred heifers. We only retain 25 bulls so the selection process starts as soon as they are born. Our cattle are selected for low maintenance and “do it on their own” traits. With cowherds getting larger and many people having off-farm jobs to help pay the bills, we realize these are the type of bulls that our commercial customers need. We sell only a small number of females every year through the Agribition and Simsational sales where many of these females have gone on to be feature cows for their new owners. This year our bulls will be ultrasounded and that information will be available at sale time or you can contact us before the sale. Thank you to all who attended last year’s sale and we hope to see you back again this year. If you have any questions about the bulls, please feel free to call Don or Ryan any time.

X-T SIMMENTALS This pen of bulls, due to their age, were purposely held over to sell as long yearlings. Now with an extra year of age, they will go home and breed more cows with less trouble. These bulls are ready for bigger pastures where they have to really get out and hunt down the cows. These bulls were turned out on native pasture from May 1 until late October when they were brought back in to start on feed. They have been fed a light grain ration this winter as we want them to go out and work for your for years.

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Southwest Showcase Bull Sale. Some years it just so happens that a lot of your best producers have bull calves. Last year was that year for us, so this year’s bull sale offering is very exciting to say the least! It was such a joy to tour the pasture last summer with this set of bulls on their dams. We think we’ve provided some good bulls for your appraisal at this sale, many of whom are out of AI Sires whose availability is limited in Canada. One AI Sire that you will recognize in many of our pedigrees is TCF/RCC Temptation GJ640, whose progeny have been well received across Canada, and for good reason. “Temptation” is one of those bulls that sires high performing bulls and exceptional females. We select all our AI sires based on their ability to produce both excellent females and bull calves, with a balance of calving ease and performance. Many of the bulls have been Igenity Profiled, Polled and Color tested. To view Igenity profiles, scotals, pictures of the bulls’ Dams, Sires, relatives, and more, please visit our website at www.boundaryranch.ca. Give us a call or stop by anytime and we’ll be happy to show you around the bull pen and our cow herd. Thank you to Bouchard Livestock for the excellent job they do with the sales management. A big thank you to all those who have supported our program in the past. We look forward to seeing you all sale day!

This guy is a tank plain and simple. Long as a freight train and extra wide, 9Y will definitely be adding some serious pounds to any calf crop. He was easily the highest Indexing red bull for WW, YW, ADG, and WPDA. His EPDs rank in the top 2%, 4%, & 15% for YW, WW, & MCE respectively. He’s sired by the infamous “Temptation” bull who’s known for his tremendous offspring and who’s semen is no longer available in Canada. His Dam has produced an excellent ¾ brother to 9Y selling to Diamond K Cattle Co. and an awesome “Silk Tassel” female who was also bred Temptation and wouldn’t you know it, her heifer is right at the top of the replacement pen. 9Y has big testicles and is overall a very attractive individual; he was voted Cattlemen’s Choice Champion Bull at the Medicine Hat Pen Show in December. 9Y is too tempting to pass up!

Backed by his powerful “Crocket” AI sire and the potent “Reggie” family genetics, 68Y should be one of the great ones. Magnum 10Y is a big, deep, dark red bull with lots of bone. We purchased his dam because she is a maternal sister to Reggie 110R, a cow that has done so much for us and who also has a bull that sells as Lot 54 (68Y). Ms Spice has done an excellent job on her first calf, and 10Y carries a lot of the trademark characteristics of a “Reggie calf” so we’re sure he’ll be a great find for any prospective cattlemen. 1Y is a very smooth bull sired by the calving ease bull Bravado that has worked so well here. Bravado calves are typically born early and 1Y definitely fits the mold with a 272 day gestation. 1Y was weaned with the Angus calves so he was only getting 2.5 lbs of barley until mid-December, but now that he’s with the sale bulls he’s really catching up. With low EPDs and a BW of 77 lbs., 1Y should work well on heifers. Inconclusive Polled Test - Scurred

This blaze face calf will really catch your eye on sale day. Long bodied, smooth shouldered with lots of eye appeal. He is a son of the new Red Bull who has left an impressive first set of calves, and mothered by a very consistent Robin Hood cow. Our Robin Hood cows are all the same - good uddered, feminine and their production is second to none.
