Wheatland Cattle Co 2017 Bull Sale

Page 1

From the desk at T Bar... Welcome to the 2017 edition of the Wheatland Cattle Company bull sale. The last part of March has always proven to energize the beef business and more so the Simmental breed, with the hard work and dedication that the Lafrentz family has invested into the industry. The Wheatland name has developed into a household name producing cattle that flat out work. As you study the sale book, you will find the vast amount of cattle that carry the LER prefix showing the genetic strength and the product this family has been assembling for many years. The true testament is the amount of Wheatland bulls that you will find working and building other programs across North America. The foundation of the Wheatland program has always been focused on the cow herd. These bulls are a product of a no-nonsense cow base. The fundamentals are simple, easy fleshing, sound structured females with tidy udders that are big middled while still maintaining look and eye appeal. This has been their recipe for success for many years and continues to be a main focus in growing and improving their own herd as well. This year’s bull pen is arguably the strongest to date. They are big middled, stout, hairy, meat and potatoes type herd bulls that will add value to your own programs through extra pounds to each calf crop, as well as maternal strength in your own replacement pens. They have been developed and maintained with longevity and product ability in mind. Fed in big runs with plenty of exercise and hand fed daily, this group of red and black Simmental, black Angus and Sim/Angus will offer a cross selection of calving ease bulls as well as power bulls to suit any need from purebred, 3/4 bloods to halfbloods. The Wheatland program has always been a highlight of the spring bull sale season. We hope you can join us March 23 and assess what one of the hardest working families in the beef business has been up to this past year, as it will not disappoint the most astute cattleman. Chris, Ben, Ted and myself have been in the bull pens and are very familiar with this program. We can assist you with any selection or absentee bidding requirements with the utmost professionalism you would deserve and expect. For the Wheatland crew,

Shane Michelson

Wheatland Cattle Co. Retains Semen Interest on all bulls in the sale.

Welcome from Wheatland...

Welcome to our 13th annual Bull Sale. Where does time go? Another year has quickly blown by. We were blessed this past year with above average moisture to ensure enough feed for the cows and keep the dugouts full. 2017 certainly looks bright, strengthening markets sure are rewarding to see. Selecting your next herd bull to squeeze out that extra dollar is more important then ever. Customers, friends and everyone who has taken time to show interest in our program, thank you. Without the support of fellow cattlemen, friends, and family there is no us. With bringing the sale home certainly has lead to some hectic moments around the farm, but we couldn’t be happier to have it at home in our own new facility. Still tweaking the off things to make it more comfortable for you and practical for us. It’s sure enjoyable to have the bulls at home in their own comfortable environment and having the bulls mommas close by is sure nice! Every year seems to get more challenging, as I’m sure it does for you too. This past year both boys are away from the farm attending school in Kansas. Riley is finishing his fourth year and will graduate this spring with a degree in Animal Science. He also had a very successful season judging, as they were named the Reserve National Champion Livestock Judging Team in Louisville, Kentucky this fall. We’re awfully excited to have him return home this spring and help lighten the load and contribute to the family operation. Cody will graduate from Hutchinson Community College this spring where he’s earned an associate diploma in Animal Science. He and his team have had a very successful run at judging where they were named Reserve Champions at Louisville, and most recently were named High Point Team in Reasons and High Point Team Overall at the Iowa Beef Expo! We wish them the best of luck this spring. We can’t say enough good things about Livestock judging teams, it has given the boys so many positive experiences and the opportunity to expand and travel throughout the country. We are very passionate about what we do around here as a family and especially as the next generation gears up to take more responsibilities in the day-to-day activities around the farm, preparing for the sale. Our direction and mission has never changed, it’s pretty simple. We strive to raise cattle that are geared for the commercial cattlemen, yet still have the eye appeal and presence to put a show halter on them and be competitive when they go to town! The same cattle that we have been successful with in the show ring are also the cattle that are the backbone to our breeding program. We take great pride in the fact the cattle we show are the same cattle that pay the bills and are functional in the real world. Sure when we go to town they’re in “show shape” but they are the type of cattle that have the structural build and body dimension to work for the commercial cattlemen or seed stock producer. We raise cattle that are functional and convenient, not extreme in any one way. Cows that are only fed hay, no fancy feed wagon or corn silage for these cows. Cows that water out of the river and get plenty of exercise, longevity is a must. Moderate framed, big middle, sound structured cows that have the ability to consume and do what they’re suppose to do; calve, rebreed, look after themselves with minimal resources and raise a big calf to put that extra dollar in your pocket. Cows when analyzed are moderate framed, deep bodied, good uddered females that have the feet and leg structure to last. The bulls are developed in large open paddocks, where exercise is a big part of their day. Eating hay out of a bale feeder and hand fed grain. Bulls that we are extremely proud to put our prefix in front of. Moderate framed, big middled, hairy, big nutted beef bulls that are sound structured with that extra eye appeal are the type we strive for. The profitable kind don’t need to be a frame score bigger, they need to be moderate, low input, sound structured females with the body dimension and fleshing ability to consume limited resources into body condition. We have always prided ourselves on our cow herd and how there “peas in a pod.” You will notice a huge percentage of the bulls and females carry the LER prefix, we feel this only increases consistency and after all it’s all about a breeding program. This will give you the predictability and consistency like no other. As you go through sale catalogues and show results it’s humbling to see the influence our genetics have had with this exciting breed. I know if you read the sale report the average may seem kind of high but we sell awfully good bulls from $4,000 to $7,500 making them affordable to everyone. As doing our job as seed stock producers, we do sell some higher dollar bulls, whichcreates a higher average. The bulls, for 2017 are awfully exciting without a doubt the most uniform, high quality, genetic powerhouses you will find up and down the road. There will also be some new fresh genetics that will be intriguing to everyone. Whether it is purebred Simmental, Sim-Angus, or purebred Angus, there is a bull for everyone at all levels. This group has been developed with you in mind after all it is you who makes it happen. It’s an awfully exciting and innovating time to be in the cattle business and selecting your next herd bull is more crucial as ever. We invite you to join us March 23rd at the farm for our annual sale. Whether it would be to catch up on a visit, have a coffee, or select your next herd sire! Do not hesitate to call if you have any questions about the bulls. Our family is committed to giving you the success that sets you apart. Let March 23rd contribute to your success. See you at the farm,

Vernon, Denise, Riley and Cody-Ray

ps: To all of our American friends, don’t forget the exchange rate, as this year it is really in your favour.

“My experience as a member of the livestock judging team at Hutchinson Community College has been incredible. Not only have I become a better evaluator of livestock, but also have made friendships and connections that will last a lifetime.”

Wyatt Durst, Kansas. “Coming to Hutch I had no clue what I was getting into and what the next 2 years had in store. My experience at HCC has been second to none. The friendships and knowledge I’ve gained will last a life time.”

“It only took one visit to Hutchinson Community College for me to realize it was the place for me. Our livestock judging coach, Ben Williams, has not only guided us to contest success, but he has also presented us with many opportunities and helped us to build relationships that will allow us to become leaders of the industry. I have the utmost respect for him and the program he has built.”

From Wheatland Cattle Co.

Vern and I can’t say enough about the positive impact this excellent Judging program has had on our boys. This program has not only enabled Riley and Cody to become better evaluators of livestock, but it has helped them grow personally as individuals, teaching them discipline, structure, responsibility, public speaking skills, confidence in themselves, and to be a team player. It has been and is exciting to follow the team from contest to contest throughout the United States, we anxiously await the call to hear how the team made out. For us, it also has been a learning experience, we soon learnt that 50 was the number that you wanted to achieve, not a bust--sometimes a top or bottom pair switch could really alter your mark, coming off the floor clean or with the lowest drops was what they always try to achieve and it seems like they keep the stationary stores in business buying steno pads!! We are honestly so impressed with the impact this judging team has had on our family, that we wanted to find a way to say THANK-YOU!!

A very interesting solid black Royal Affair son. Royal Affair has been a great fit to our program, adding all the goodness of the STF Onyx cow family from Silver Towne Farms and Remington Lock n Load. We are very high on our Royal Affair daughters, they make great mothers. They have lots of middle, body dimension, hair and are very nicely uddered. We put a lot of emphasis on udders around here, the females need to have a tightly suspended udder with proper teat size and placement, its just a must!! 614 is super stout, has a ton of body shape and mass. He is super hairy, moves out freely and shows lots of testicular development. His dam is seven and doing a great job, she has another special one at side this year. A maternal brother is working in the very progressive herd of Dieter and Marlene Rucks.

An impressive red baldy son sired by 298Z and mothered by a first calf Royal Affair daughter. The 298Z calves are born very vigorous with a small moderate birth weights, but just give them a couple of weeks, they explode. This red baldy bull is full of power, he is big topped, deep bodied, stout from behind and has great structure. If you study his pedigree you will notice the strength of the cow families behind him. 621D combines some of our best proven genetics, a real opportunity here.

“298Z , WORTH HIS WEIGHT IN GOLD- THE CALVING EASE SPECIALIST “ Vernon We are very happy with our first set of calves off Wheatland Bull 541C. The calving ease has been excellent from both heifers and cows. The calves at a young age are showing lots of growth and are a very stylish consistent group. 541C is out of their Wheatland Bull 298Z, a bull the Lafrentz family is high on for calving ease. He has thrown us consistent birth weights across the board and leaves 95% of the calves with the “chrome” face. We have used many genetics from the Wheatland program but 541C was the first walking bull we purchased. He has not disappointed us and we are excited to use him again even more this year!

Sired by our calving ease bull 298Z, here is a solid black son out of a first calf heifer. One has to admire the completeness of this individual. He is super soft sided, shows all kinds of muscle definition and puts it all together in a very appealing package. Eye appeal is another trait we feel is important in our breeding cattle, but at the same time without sacrificing performance. 631D, will add his softness, muscle and eye appeal to your next calf crop.

One of the first sons of Wheatland Royal Flush to sell! 641D exhibits all of those great qualities of Royal Flush, lots of shape, dimension, muscle mass, softness, great hair, exceptional testicle development and eye appeal. We campaigned Royal Flush, 641D’s sire this past fall at Agribition and were honoured to be named Grand Champion Bull and also a top 10 Finalist in the RBC Beef Supreme. Royal Flush was also exhibited in the yards at Denver this past January, where he drew a lot of positive attention. Royal Flush is owned by JP Cattle Co, it has been great working with them and getting to know them better. 641D’s pedigree is stacked with proven and predictable cow families, what an opportunity here!

His mom 123 is a dark cherry red, moderate framed, sound footed female that has an exceptional udder. 656’s sire Final Affair should only add excitement; his calves have been appreciated for their style and calving ease at birth but still having plenty of performance at weaning time. 656 is a sound footed bull that you’ll appreciate from any angle. Be sure to find him sale day his low birth weight and calving ease should put him on your watch list. A solid, dark red Profit son. Here is a bull that I think you will find intriging--- he is long in his design but shows such great muscle mass and dimension while still being soft sided and real good looking. We used Profit to add some new exciting genetics to our breeding program. Both Riley and Cody have seen Profit and were very impressed with him; he has matured into a great breeding bull that is definitely leaving his mark within the industry. The dam of 660D needs no introduction as she is the mother to Wheatland Circuit Breaker, who himself has left such a positive impact. We are calving out our Circuit Breaker females and couldn’t be more happy. They are great mothers with absolutely beautiful udders, I think the influence of Circuit Breaker will be seen for a long time. 675D is mothered by a moderate, soggy made female, who honestly puts everything into her calves. She is a bull maker and has a track record proving that--- has produced four sons for us that have been in previous sales. This bull comes to you with a different pedigree being sired by Profit and mothered by a WS Route One female, outcross genetics here!! 675D is solid black, smooth and complete in his makeup. He is soft sided just like his maternal brothers and has great body dimension and muscle shape. This bull has great structure and a big foot underneath him, he moves out so free and easy. A great opportunity to add some outcross genetics while still being backed by a very consistent proven cow family. Maternal brothers are working in the good herds of Dieter and Marlene Rucks, Curtis Simmentals, Cory Jorgenson, and Percyview Farms.

We’ve been using Wheatland genetics in our herd for many years. We are very happy with the quality of the females that we’ve raised out of these bulls. They are sound footed and good uddered. We’ve also been very satisfied with the growth and shape of our feeder calves. The Wheatland bulls definitely add some thickness to their offspring. They’ve proven to be an excellent cross on our Hereford-Angus cows. Sourcing great bulls is important to us. Dealing with great people is more important. That is why the Lafrentz’s are one of the families we continue to do business with. Every year, it’s a pleasure to look through their bull pen. The bulls are very consistent. The quality is high.

Revenue

677D Polled

wheatland red ace 747t wheatland lady 727 t

Revenue is one of the most unique beef bulls we have been able to produce to date in the history of Wheatland. Phenotypically and genetically he covers all the bases. Every spring the talk is where’s the next outcross herd bull? Well Revenue brings some of the freshest most sought after genetics to the table. His sire Profit the $400,000 bull from Hartman Cattle Company is sure leaving his mark his grandsire WS Pilgrim is now deceased and semen has became a very high demand. Pilgrim will go down as one of the great breeding bulls in the Simmental business. Revenue’s mom 935W can be described as moderate framed, beautiful uddered female that offers so much angularity and style. Take note on the bottom side of his pedigree he stems back to 902J and 917J, two of the most influential cows on the farm. You will admire revenue for his power and performance coupled with his outstanding hair coat and testicle development, but his style and presence positions him in his own category. What makes us just as excited is the way he is built in his skeleton, not only is he big footed but he has the right shape to his foot while being stout boned and clean jointed. He moves effortless! Study him on paper and you will appreciate his balanced genetic profile. I’d say it would be worth the drive to study him for yourself. He exhibits the power and performance that we are all after, but his unmatched presence and structure position that puts him in his own league. I’d say it’s time to capitalize on this genetic powerhouse we are certainly going to use him extensively in our program. Vern may have said it best, “after 45 years of breeding Simmental cattle, Revenue ranks is one of the most exciting bulls our family has had the chance to breed.” It’s time to make an awfully big revenue.

In 2012 we purchased our first Wheatland bulls for our commercial herd. Over the past four years we have been very impressed with the genetic influence the bulls have had on every stage of the production cycle. The calves are fast growing and noticeable in the pasture. The feeders are top gainers and it shows on the sales receipt. We have kept many structurally sound replacement heifers which have turned out to be excellent cows. The influence is obvious and consistent and we are very pleased with the direction our cow herd is going and improving. With confidence in the results we have since purchased two more bulls in the 2016 sale and are excited to have more of the Wheatland stamp working for us. We are thankful to the Lafrentz family for their dedication and hard work. The Wheatland Cattle Company are sure to be a part of our future.

One of the most interesting specimens to be around the farm here! This powerful eye appealing herd bull was the Reserve Champion Junior Bull Calf at Agribition where he sure made a lot of friends. He also was a member of the Denver bulls where he was one of the most talked about bulls in the yards! His power and look certainly draw you in but what sets him apart is his structure. Big footed, stout boned and awesome jointed with the ideal set to his hock, he just floats!! Benefit brings a total outcross pedigree to the table, his mom SL60 is a power source female that has had many bulls in the sale and daughters working in the herd. We though so much of her she has now entered the donor program. She herself has also been pointed out for her power and dimension. It would be a challenge to find a cow with better feet that what she has! Not only genetically is he something very special but this one’s structure and eye appeal don’t come along every day! If you want to put a halter on Benefit and campaign him he’ll stand the heat!! I would say it would be a Benefit to add him to your program!

A solid dark red Profit son, who just puts it all together in a very complete package. We can’t say enough good things about our Profit calves; we are very impressed with them!! 6139D has herd bull written all over him; he has such a good strong head, a quality we feel great breeding bulls need to possess. He has great lines about him, strong topped and so very soft sided. You have to admire the muscle shape and pattern he has and the great hip he possesses. He is mothered by an outstanding Golden Opportunity female, that is always found on pasture tours, she is huge bodied, sound and has a deadly udder. 6139D, blends so smooth from his shoulder into his fore rib, tack on his balance and quality look from the side, he sure won’t be missed sale day.

Here is a powerfully made, young black herdsire that carries some new genetics to his pedigree. His sire, was a bull that we bought from Beshears Simmentals. You can see how well he and 729 clicked, it just worked!! He is mothered by a hard working, super proven Top Gun female, who has had a great impact on our program. 6141 is a long made, very deep bodied individual who shows all kinds of muscle shape and mass. He is one stout guy!! A bull with a great look, great hair and lots of testicle development. An opportunity to purchase some outcross genetics!

6143D without a doubt will be one of the coolest 3/4 blood bulls to sell this season. A solid black Profit son that just grabs your attention no matter where he is in the pen; he has style and look to burn, it’s endless!! He is mothered by a truly beautiful, big bodied, elegant F1 female who has a superb udder. This individual is so super soft sided, but yet has so much mass and dimension to him. He is built awesome from the ground up, big footed with great bone, he flexes out so freely on the move. The other great attribute this bull has is that he has inches of that long good straight hair, that just stands off of his body, you gotta love it!! We feel 6143 will have a very positive impact within the beef industry. If your looking for a bull with the qualities that were mentioned above, make sure you find 6143, you won’t want to miss this one!

A moderate made very complete Royal Affair son. You will notice he is a fair bit younger than the other bulls, but don’t overlook him because of his age. 6146D has a great look about him; he is smooth made from front to back with a little extra length throughout his front end. A big hipped, soft made bull that has excellent testicle development and loads of really good hair. In studying his pedigree you will find it is weighted heavily with proven and predictable cow families.

This is the youngest bull in this year’s offering, but one we are very proud to have bred and raised. Here is a bull that shows a tremendous amount of body shape and muscle expression. He is good footed, moves real well and has lots of testicle development. Mothered by a very solid, great producing half blood female.

695 D, is a super complete, long deep bodied bull that will catch your eye. He is hairy, stout and sound. This bull certainly has a cool look about him and he is proud, two traits we feel are very important when selecting your next herd bull! He is backed by a no miss dam, who always does a great job-- she is a moderate, big middled female, that is very easy to look at. We were impressed with the Cash Flow calves, they come easy with a lot of vigour. Give them a couple of weeks and they just exploded, you have to appreciate growth like that! Here is a very complete package, that will offer a lot of great attributes to his offspring. Strong, proven pedigree!!

Cash Flow has been admired by many for his moderation and power! This big nutted herd bull is really bold ribbed and deep sided coupled with an awesome muscle shape. He’s the kind you’ll want to keep every replacement out of! His sire KR Cash Flow certainly has been used in a lot of progressive angus operations around the country and they have caught the eye of many sharp cattlemen for their calving ease but explosive growth from that point on. He is unique in his make up, a definite herd changer—a trend setter!! 6113, has a ton of great hair and the most docile disposition. His mother is considered the ideal angus cow, moderate framed, great uddered and very feminine all in a structurally correct package. Be sure to find this tank sale day! If you want to keep replacement females and build a herd, here’s your bull!
