JAIPUR LITERATURE FESTIVAL (JLF) 5th Annual ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival Colorado Each Other’s Stories: September 21–22, 2019 @ Main Library ZEE JLF Colorado is a Festival of world literature, ideas, and inspiring experiences for adults, teens, and families. An uplifting celebration of the mind and heart, dozens of writers, thinkers and artists from Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe will take part in provocative conversations, performances and workshops about life, society, the arts, economics, equity, freedom, and the care of our planet. Delight in the joy of connecting with your local and global community and make some memories with us for the fifth year running! THURSDAY CINEMA American Rebel: The Dean Reed Story | Thursday, August 8, 7 p.m. (93 min.) Local Filmmakers’ Showcase Directed by Will Roberts, featuring Dean Reed, Renate Blume (1985). The story of Colorado-born international film and rock superstar Dean Reed, sometimes known as the Red Elvis. This 1985 biographical motion picture was shot in the USA, Chile, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Russia and the Middle East. In German, Spanish and Russian with subtitles.

Hot Summer (Heißer Sommer) | Thursday, August 22, 5 p.m. (91 min.) Directed by Joachim Hasler (East Germany–1968). In this teen musical (a kind of East German Grease ), a group of girls from Leipzig are heading for the Baltic coast, where an obnoxious group of boys from KarlMarx-Stadt intrude on their holiday. CLIMATE RIBBON @ MAIN July 3–August 28, Arapahoe Ramp The Climate Ribbon is a global interactive story-sharing ritual for climate hope and healing. The power of the project is rooted in a very simple yet profound question: what do you love and hope to never lose to climate chaos? Come add your story.

“FARMING IN BOULDER 1859 TO THE PRESENT” @ CARNEGIE August 1–September 10 The City of Boulder was founded as a supply town for hard rock miners in the mountains and agricultural farmers on the plains. In the 1860s hay, wheat, cattle, pumpkins, corn, and sugar beets were some of the first crops raised in the valley. Stop by the Carnegie Library to learn more about the farms that used dot the landscape and what Boulder County is doing with these historic farms today. Check historicboulder.org for an associated program on agriculture that will take place at the Carnegie Library.

UNDER- & OVERSTORIES @ MAIN August 9–September 29, Canyon Gallery NEST (Nature, Environment, Science & Technology) Studio for the Arts proudly presents work at the intersection of science and art. With more than twenty exhibitors, this collection of work addresses the paradox of scale held within the microscopic and the cosmic, the single-celled organism and the ecosystemic. Film screening on September 26, 5–6 p.m. in Canyon Theater, followed by gallery reception from 6–8 p.m.

“A PASSAGE FROM INDIA” @ MAIN September 1–30, Arapahoe Ramp This exhibition includes paintings by artist Jyotsna Raj, some created before she came to live in the United States, all reflecting the beauty and traditions of India, including folk art and ancient miniatures.

JOHNNY APPLESEED WAS HERE! APPLE TREES OF BOULDER @ CARNEGIE September 12–October 31 In the 1860s, Boulder farmers determined that the foothills had a perfect climate for growing a variety of fruits. Marinus Smith experimented growing apples on his property in town, while William Wolfe grew apples in north Boulder. The Batchelder Ranch (where Chautauqua is now) also had an apple orchard. Stop by Carnegie Library and learn about the history of apple trees in Boulder with the AppleSeedProject.org. Check historicboulder.org for an associated program on Boulder's apple trees that will take place at the Carnegie Library.

JAPANESE IKEBANA – FALL FLOWER SHOW @ MAIN October 4–6, Canyon Gallery Explore the world of Japanese Ikebana in this culturally significant exhibition of over 50 works of floral art. Paired with the flower arrangements will be Japanese scroll paintings from the National Museum Collection. Demonstration on Japanese Ikebana from 1:30–3 p.m. Sunday October 6, 2019 in the Canyon Theater.

“STREET WISE” @ MAIN October 11–December 1, Canyon Gallery Street Wise will show culturally inspired street artwork from diverse perspectives reflecting our current social, political, environmental climate through the eyes of artists. The project will include both work inside the gallery and outside street installations throughout the City of Boulder, as well as workshops and community events. Curated by Leah Brenner Clack.
