AUTHORS & TALKS LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON AUTHOR OF SHOUT @ MAIN Wednesday, April 3, 7 p.m., Canyon Theater Laurie Halse Anderson is a New York Times bestselling author whose writing spans young readers, teens, and new adults. Combined, her books have sold more than eight million copies. She has been twice nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Two of her books, Speak and Chains, were National Book Award finalists, and Chains was short-listed for the prestigious Carnegie Medal. Laurie was selected by the American Library Association for the 2009 Margaret A. Learn to play the ancient and mysterious board game known as Go. Developed 4000 years ago in China, the rules are so simple they can be taught in a few minutes–but it can take a lifetime to master the game. Go boards are provided and take-home sets made of cardboard are available for free. Ages 5+.

Join us for some hands on fun, and learn about the importance of citizen science and active citizen science projects in the area. Get inspired to join an existing citizen science effort and help with research projects here in Boulder! Ages 5+.

RUBBER STAMPS & POTATO PRINT PATTERNS @ MAIN Sunday, April 28, 2–3 p.m., Mt. Sanitas Room Make your mark on paper and on cloth! Carve your own rubber stamps to decorate a bookmark, and then use potatoes to print shapes onto a bandana that you can take home. Ages 7+.

When it’s too cold to play outside, try jumping rope inside. Use a long elastic loop instead of a twirling rope, and make the jumps as challenging as you wish! Ages 7+. 3

Animal Farm | Sunday, March 3, 1 p.m. (75 min.) Directed by Joy Batchelor and John Halas, featuring the voices of Gordon Heath and Maurice Denham (U.K.—1954). In this animated adaption of George Orwell’s classic dystopia fashioned after the formation of the U.S.S.R. and the dictatorship of Josef Stalin, the animals of a farm, oppressed by the cruelty and inefficiency of their masters, take over only to find tyrants among themselves.

Return to Oz | Sunday, April 7, 1 p.m. (113 min.) Directed by Walter Murch, featuring Fairuz Balk, Nicol Williamson, Piper Laurie (1985). Dorothy Gale, recovering from the ordeal of the tornado is taken by her Aunt Em to a doctor that treats her delusional depression and acute insomnia with electroshock treatments. Rescued by a mysterious girl, she is lead back to the Land of Oz. Based on later Oz novels by L. Frank Baum.

THURSDAY CINEMA Popeye | Thursday February 28, 7 p.m. (114 min.) Family Viewing Directed by Robert Altman, featuring Robin Williams, Shelly Duval, Ray Walston (1980). This live-action portrayal traces Popeye as he sails to the seaside village of Sweethaven to find the father that abandoned him. There he meets Olive Oyl and her family, including Cofather Cole and brother Castor. He nurtures a baby left on his doorstep that he names Swee’pea. Based on the cartoon characters of Elzie Crisler Segar.

Mondo Hollywood | Thursday March 14, Film starts at 7 p.m. (120 min.) Local Filmmakers’ Showcase—Film Social with Filmmaker starts at 6 p.m. Directed by Robert Cohen, featuring Margaretta Ramsey, Dale Davis, Jay Sebring, Bbby Beausoliel (1967). Take a trip back to L.A. of the 1960’s in this surreal documentary and meet the wild and creative characters from wouldbe vampire actors to Shriners, celebs, surfers, hairdressers and cross-dressers inhabiting the city in 1966. Robert Carl Cohen, the film’s strangely youthful 88 year-old director who fled to Boulder in the 1990s, introduces this rare theatrical presentation of his psychedelic cult classic. Join the filmmaker for a 1960s party at 6 p.m. Please dress in 1960s period fashion!

The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! | Thursday, March 28, 7 p.m. (126 min.) Family Viewing Directed by Norman Jewison, featuring Alan Arkin, Carl Reiner, Eva Marie Saint, Theodor Bikel, Jonathan Winters (1966). A Soviet submarine runs aground on the fictional Gloucester Island, Massachusetts trying to get a view of America, seeking help from a vacationing TV writer and the local police chief, who suspect they are not Norwegians, as they say. Based on the novel “The Out-Islanders” by Nathaniel Benchley.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors | Thursday, April 11, 7 p.m.

Directed by Sergei Paradjanov, featuring Ivan Mikolaichuk, Larisa Kadochnikova, Tatiana Bestayeva, Spartak Bagashivili (U.S.S.R.—1964). A young boy’s brother is killed and his father murdered and he lives in poverty with his mother. He falls in love with the daughter of his father’s murderer, but their love ends prematurely with her sudden death and he enters a loveless marriage, haunted by tragic memories. Based on Ukranian writer Mikail Kotzyubinsky’s folktales of the Karpati Mountains and set in the nation of the Gutsuls where the Hutzul tribe lived. In Ukranian with subtitles.

3RD TUESDAY LUNCHTIME CONCERTS CU’s ‘On the Rocks’ Acapella Choir Tuesday, February 19, 12–1 p.m. On the Rocks, a CU women’s vocal ensemble specializes in songs that are sung “acappella“, meaning “without instrumental accompaniment”. Their set list includes a wide range of songs ranging from classic jazz to modern pop and R&B, all of which have been arranged by members of our group.

Colcannon Irish Ensemble Tuesday, March 19, 12–1 p.m. Authentic, Joyous Irish Music...traditional with a touch of chamber music and music hall, Colcannon plays Irish music with panache and warmth. Colcannon’s concerts are renowned for their energy, for singer/frontman Mick Bolger’s irrepressible sense of humor and sly wit, and, of course, for the music; music that expresses flights of joy, deep sorrows, and an unquenchable zest for life.

Altius Quartet featuring Hsing-ay Hsu, Piano Tuesday, April 16, 12–1 p.m. Altius Quartet is an ensemble determined to further the art of chamber music through performance, education, and outreach. Deriving their name from the Olympic motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius (Latin for Faster, Higher, Stronger); Altius strives to communicate art to a more diverse audience through community engagement and innovative repertoire. Program includes movements from Brahms’ Piano Quintet, Mozart Concerto K.414- Quintet version by the composer, and Piazzolla’s Libertango.


SPECIAL CONCERT @ MAIN BOULDER PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS ‘MEET THE MAESTRO’ WITH MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, Saturday, March 2, 3 p.m. Join Boulder Philharmonic Music Director Michael Butterman for an inside look at the orchestra! In addition to exploring what happens inside the concert hall, we’ll also see how orchestral music used in movies can help drive the overall story and shape the way we feel about characters and events. From the piccolo to percussion, the endless palette of sounds and textures found in the orchestra makes movies come alive! We’ll learn about the basics of the orchestra and how it functions, as well as the important role that the conductor plays. This concert features ‘8 Songs for a Mad King’, by Peter Maxwell Davies: “A shocking, scandalous, and utterly captivating chamber work for a crazed king and his beloved birds”—with special guest author/poet/artist Serena Chopra. ‘Mostly Mozart’ Sunday, April 14, 2 p.m. Geraldine Walther—viola, David Korevaar—piano & Harumi Rhodes—violin Internationally renowned musicians Geraldine Walther, David Korevaar, and Harumi Rhodes join forces to present an afternoon of ‘Mostly Mozart’. Program includes Mozart’s B flat violin duo for violin and viola, a Mozart Rondo for piano solo, and a Mozart violin and piano sonata.

BARBER SHOPS OF BOULDER @ CARNEGIE

MOUNTAINEERING EQUIPMENT IN BOULDER @ CARNEGIE March 19–April 30, Carnegie Library

Stop by the Carnegie Library to see historic photos of old barber shops from our collections accompanied by unique artifacts from the Museum of Boulder, including a classic barber pole and an antique barber shop chair.

Boulder is associated with many “firsts” in the field of mountaineering equipment. In 1947, LeRoy and Alice Holubar began a mountaineering equipment business that gradually specialized in light, customdesigned equipment for back-packers and rock climbers. It is now part of The North Face. Stop by the Carnegie Library to see historic photographs, catalogs, mountaineering patterns from our collection, as well as historic artifacts from the Museum of Boulder collection.

This show celebrates the work of designers, scientists, artists, engineers, and craftspeople that comprise our maker community. Showcased work will include printed materials, threedimensional objects, kinetic, and interactive projects.

The Boulder Valley School District will once again hold it’s annual K–8 Art exhibit at the Boulder Public Library. Art teachers from all elementary and middle schools will select six pieces of art and honor the student artists who created that art at the reception. All are welcome to enjoy this event which has been an important part of advocating for art in public education over the past decades.

A SLOW FLASH OF LIGHT @ MAIN April 6–May 27, Arapahoe Ramp

Jack Collom (1931-2017) began teaching in poets-in-the-schools programs in the mid-1970s nationwide (and abroad), a practice he continued for the rest of his life. He taught thousands of school children of all grades in Boulder County and wrote the book Moving Windows about teaching poetry to children. This exhibition is a tribute to his work, in conjunction with the BVSD showcase in the Canyon Gallery.

Learn about the artists working to resurrect ancient Japanese pottery traditions from the Jomon period–a peaceful era that lasted for ten thousand years and is making a revival in modern Japanese art. This exhibition is in collaboration with Studio Arts Boulder, coinciding with a special program series with visiting Japanese Jomon artists.

Note: The Maker Made: Works Presented by BLDG 61 (February-March) and the Boulder Valley School District (April) will also be displaying some work during the exhibitions at the Meadows Branch Library!

BLDG 61 TOOLS & EQUIPMENT The following tools are available during BLDG 61’s scheduled Drop-In events: Lulzbot 3D printers, Othermill CNC machine, vinyl cutter, sewing machines, sergers, embroidery machine, looms, spinning wheels, electronics bench, soldering irons, airbrush, and more depending on availability. The following woodshop tools are available during Shop 61 events: table saw, jointer/planer, drum sander, bandsaw, chop saw, oscillating spindle sander, edge sander, track saw, vacuum press, workbench, clamps, various jigs, and hand tools. The Shopbot CNC Machine and Epilog Laser Cutters are available during their respective tool orientation and guided practice events.

Thursdays, February 21 & March 7 (none in April), 9 a.m.–12 p.m., Canyon Theater/Digital Foundry Alert for all filmmakers – the library has facility and software to convert digital motion picture files to DCP format, so you are festival ready. This monthly workshop includes time for creating DCP files and screening your short full-size in the Canyon Theater, as well as access to 8 & 16 mm projectors, editors and splicers. Select Sundays, 2:30–5:30 p.m. Learn to sew, mend, and alter garments in this monthly event hosted by the Colorado Sewing Rebellion. Materials and equipment are provided to complete a beginner level sewing project each month. Ages 10+. Join the Rebellion!
