defeated the city. So the city changed the ordinance, found a new violation, and promptly appealed its appeal. The case continues to cost massive amounts of money.

It’s not the only battle the city continues waging against a dispensary owner. Michelle Tucker wasn’t informed of her alleged shady moral character until after she’d passed the first background check, “received a Tier 1 letter from the city to proceed,” and spent $250,000 making her dispensary compliant with city regulations. Then she was told to close. But a hearing officer decided that the city couldn’t use Tucker’s past legal trouble: It was a civil case; she’d never actually been convicted. So the city found a new violation in her paperwork. The case drags on.

Last week, her appeal was nearly cut short by city officials who arrived at her business bent on destroying all its marijuana. Then the court decision wouldn’t matter, Tucker and her attorney explained, because the business would be crushed anyway. If they do win in court, the city can also continue the battle by appealing the victory.

“No one can win against the city,” said one dispensary owner.

During one case, Haddock told a judge that if an appealing dispensary wins, the city’s rules will be viewed as “suggestions.” These dispensaries must be defeated — at any cost.

The increased license fees will help cover the cost.

Other changes in the latest version of the city’s ordinance will make shutting down dispensaries more cost-effective. The new draft includes the city’s “zerotolerance” policy: If your business violates any MMJ rule — if your manager leaves the dispensary for a minute, or you forget to lock up your edibles one see MARIJUANA Page 9

night, or you file paperwork a couple days late, or your employees put unopened beers in the fridge — it’s all over. Several Boulder businesses have been shuttered by the zero-tolerance policy — although the ordinance doesn’t officially include it yet.

How did the policy become Boulder law, before City Council ever voted on it? Sources say it was simply Haddock’s decision. In a phone interview, Haddock explained that a judge had asked “how many bites at the apple” each dispensary gets, and the decision was ultimately made by “the licensing authority. It was their discretion.

That’s a bad word, but they had to establish standards.”

In a later email, Haddock clarified that the judge was told that “the city had not set a number of violations that were ‘free’ before a license would be revoked.”

This led to the zero-tolerance policy. “Frankly,” says Haddock, “I do not remember if that first came from a witness or from a judge.”

On the phone, she’d been reluctant to credit anyone “because there was so much discussion.” It had been a group decision, “for lack of a better term.” So a decision by unelected officials, without any vote, became a law — a law that shattered the lives of several small-business owners.

Once denied, dispensary owners have little hope. “Boulder has eliminated any right to present evidence to a neutral hearing officer,” says Gard.

“This is the only area where government can take away licenses without the opportunity to present your evidence or make your case. So now with zero tolerance, the city becomes arresting officer, judge and jury.”

When I asked Haddock about the lack of due process, she forwarded me the decision from Boulder Kind Care v.

City of Boulder. She had represented the city; Gard represented the dispensary. The judge ruled that “the standards of due process are flexible” — dispensary owners should have “the opportunity to be heard” but not to testify. They don’t deserve “traditional

due process protections” because their business license is “not a constitutionally protected right or property interest.”

Marijuana business licenses will enter the constitution if Amendment 64 passes. (That’s why the City of Boulder officially opposes the amendment.) But medical marijuana business licenses won’t. “A medical marijuana business license is a revocable privilege,” the judge repeatedly said about Boulder’s MMJ ordinance. The new version of the ordinance strengthens that sentence, clarifying that your privilege can be revoked not just by the feds or the state — but by the city, too.

Changes to the ordinance are based on MMJ court cases the city has struggled to win, Gard suggested. The latest draft allows the city to use civil cases (like Tucker’s) to deny licenses. Even if it’s not approved in time to apply to Tucker’s case, it still helps the city defeat dispensaries.

It raises fees paid by the industry, funding the court battles. And it cements the zero-tolerance policy in local law.

Would the zero-tolerance policy apply to retail marijuana stores, too?

Amendment 64 proposes regulating marijuana “like alcohol.” Businesses that sell alcohol don’t permanently lose their liquor license after their first violation. And they’re allowed to make their case at hearings.

But marijuana isn’t treated like any other business. And Boulder treats MMJ businesses differently than any other city does, several attorneys agreed.

Regardless of how the city reacts, Amendment 64 will immediately allow adults in Colorado to possess and grow marijuana.

Yes, well-heeled oil and gas interests are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into defeating Question 300 so they can protect their pocketbooks, shelling out tons of money to pay for TV commercials and slick fliers.

But the other side, with all 12,873 of its dollars, has come out with a pretty slick little video of its own, making fun of the anti-300 flier mailed to Longmont residents. You know, the one featuring the seven Republican former Longmont mayors.

Well, take a gander at what they came up with. Not only does the singer have some pipes, there are some pretty clever lines and animated images of trampled children.

We like the part when they refer to themselves as “seven has-been mayors” and sing, “Since we’re white and we’re rich and old / You must believe what you are told.”

Trust us, this catchy tune will be in your head for days.

And look for Gov. Frackinlooper’s cameo at the end.

Scientists claim whales can talk

Scientists announced this week that it is possible that whales — one of, if not the, most intelligent mammals in the world — can vocalize human words and possibly even learn to talk to us.

Wow. While such a prospect sounds great at first, just imagine what whales might be inclined to say to us once they know the language. Here’s a list of possibilities.

1) Whale wars shmale wars, get the hell away from me before I Moby Dick your tiny human ass.

2) What’s wrong? I’ll tell you what’s wrong. That big blue guy in the Smithsonian was my cousin.

3) No really, it’s my pleasure. It’s not every day you get to meet the species that thought it was a good idea to hunt you to the brink of extinction so they could have perfume.

4) Don’t give me that Eskimo cultural sustainability crap. How would you like it if I stuck that thing in your back?

5) Could you introduce me to the guy who invented plastic? I think I have something that belongs to him.

Where are those crazy Italian courts when you need one?

Note to self: Don’t be a seismologist in Italy.

This week, an Italian court decided that seven scientists, including seismologists and other earthquake experts, were guilty of manslaughter for not having properly warned the citizens of the small town of L’Aquila that a quake was coming.

So it’s obvious that the Italian court system is pretty ludicrous. But wouldn’t it be great if we could use it selectively for things like prosecuting the CEOs of Goldman Sachs and their investment banking pals? “Guilty as charged” for not warning Americans that the banking system was about to collapse.

Or what about doling out 15-year prison terms to presidential candidates who make false promises? We can hear it now, “guilty for failure to actually create 12 million new, high-paying jobs.”

2nd Congressional District (Susan Hall). The reason can be found between the lines of your first paragraph, in which you give readers the go-ahead to vote third party, and you won’t even say they might be throwing their vote away. How generous.

I’ve written a novel that is in large part about the promise of independent voting and dislodging the two-party monopoly. It’s called Fools Poll (Amazon, iBookstore, Nook), and in it an underdog disabled candidate who’s never had a job takes on the two parties in a Congressional election. Even as his support builds, people are afraid they would be throwing their votes away if they vote for someone who might lose. And that’s the position Boulder Weekly seems to be taking.

Rather than lead us to progressive solutions, BW is afraid to throw its vote (endorsement) away. As the underdog character in Fools Poll tells people, the only time you throw your vote away is when you don’t vote as your conscious guides you. And as a matter of mathematical fact, the only time your vote actually matters is if you vote for a candidate who wins by only one vote, or you don’t vote for a candidate who loses by only one vote.

I wish BW had stuck with its conscious — not the Nixonian one, but the Naderish one.

Richard Wall/Lafayette I disagree with the Boulder Weekly’s failure to endorse Judge John Stavely for retention as Boulder County Court Judge.

I am a criminal defense attorney and practice primarily in Boulder.

Having appeared many times in front of Judge Stavely, I can attest that he does not favor the prosecution. An important part of being a defense attorney is to stand up for sometimes unpopular and maligned people and to give a voice for those who are accused, no matter the circumstances. Judge Stavely treats my clients with respect.

The premise of my job is to be skeptical and critical of law enforcement and government, so I don’t write a letter like this casually. Judge Stavely will not hesitate to suppress evidence and statements which were unconstitutionally obtained. If the test of a good judge is whether they are willing to uphold the constitution and whether they treat defendants well, then Judge Stavely passes that test. I will not hesitate to vote to retain.

Suspect in Ridgeway murder matches BW profile

s first posited in an Oct. 18 package of stories by Boulder Weekly, the suspect arrested Wednesday in the murder of Jessica Ridgeway not only lived in the same neighborhood as the 10-year-old girl, but has been implicated in the attempted assault of a female jogger at nearby Ketner Lake on Memorial Day.

Law enforcement officials announced on Oct. 24 that Austin Reed Sigg, 17, is expected to face charges related to the kidnapping and murder of Ridgeway as well as the attack on a 22-year-old woman who said her assailant tried to grab her and put a chemicalsoaked rag over her mouth at the lake on May 28.

ick Morgan is not your average military veteran.

He’s not your average University of Colorado student, either.

And it’s not just because of his long hair or the scar next to his right eye.

After serving in Iraq, and questioning the purpose of that mission, Morgan became an anti-war activist. During a protest prior to a 2008 presidential debate in New York, he was injured in what he says was a case of police brutality.

According to Morgan, he was trampled by a cop on a horse and suffered serious head injuries that required multiple surgeries.

He just left Boulder for Long Island, where his lawsuit over the incident will finally go to trial this week. * * * * Morgan joined the Army Reserves in 2002, during his junior year in high school.

His reasoning? To get money for college and, due to the 9/11 attacks, “there was a lot of patriotism in the air,” he says. “Maybe it was out of a sense of duty.”

He graduated from basic training on the day the U.S. invaded Iraq, and he was deployed in 2004.

injuries. It was held four years ago this month, outside the final presidential debate between candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. Morgan and his fellow Iraq Veterans Against the War wanted a question about veterans’ issues asked at the debate, but they were denied. At an anti-war protest organized outside the debate, several veterans crossed a police barrier and were arrested, but Morgan intentionally stayed out of that group.

He says he was trying to stay out of trouble; he had an important meeting with the Veterans Administration that week to discuss the continuation of his benefits.

But at one point during the protest, police in riot gear were trying to get a few hundred people to move off the street and back onto the sidewalk. Morgan says he was part of a line of veterans who were wearing their desert camouflage fatigues and standing at parade rest (hands behind back) between the cops and the crowd of civilian protesters. Cops mounted on horses began spinning into them, Morgan says, and he was knocked down onto the sidewalk, where a horse stepped on his face and he briefly blacked out. Morgan says he does remember subsequently being dragged across the street, blood pouring from his wound, some gauze taped to his face, and into a paddy wagon. The cops claim he initially refused medical attention.

“They should never have touched me while I was unconscious, with a head injury,” Morgan says.

“Secondly, I was not in the right state of mind to answer.”

Eventually, he recalls, a plainclothes officer took him to a hospital, where a doctor gave him motrin, amoxicillin and directions he couldn’t read due to blurred vision. Then it was on to jail.

He had his first surgery a week later to repair crushed facial bones. A titanium wire was inserted to keep his eyeball in, Morgan says. He needed plastic surgery a year and a half later to remove scar tissue because his incisions didn’t heal properly. Morgan suspects he still suffers from TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) as a result of the injury.

He was charged with disorderly conduct, as were other protesters who were arrested that day. According to Morgan, he was acquitted after completing a probation period.

Then he filed suit against Nassau County and several of the officers involved. Among his allegations are violations of the First, Fourth, Fifth and 14th Amendments to the Constitution. About a dozen defendants were named in the suit, including certain cops identified only as “John Doe” because they weren’t wearing nametags at the time of the See VETERAN Page 14

“At this point, it’s about getting as much money as I can for my troubles,” Morgan says. “But I’m not into wealth, just look at how I dress.”

In an effort to reduce the amount of paper and plastic bags used in the city, Boulder City Council approved an ordinance that requires shoppers to pay a 10-cent fee for each paper and plastic bag they use at the grocery store. The fee includes paper and plastic bags used at food retailers and grocery stores, convenience stores and Target, according to the ordinance summary. An estimated 120 million plastic bags were thrown away in Boulder County in 2010, which has contributed to higher operating costs at recycling and composting facilities as well as litter around the city, according to the City of Boulder’s website.

The city will be distributing reusable bags to low-income families before the fee goes into effect starting in July of 2013.

ENDANGERED TROUT POPULATION FOUND NEAR COLORADO SPRINGS

Using DNA from wild trout and museum specimens from as far back as 1857, CU-

Boulder scientists Jessica Metcalf and Andrew Martin determined that the only existing greenback cutthroat trout population exists in Bear Creek, west of Colorado Springs.

The species is native to the South Platte, but probably ended up in Bear Creek during stocking efforts between 1889 and 1925, when about 50 million cutthroats were moved to areas on the Front Range from the Gunnison and White River Basins.

The findings will likely have the strongest impact on the greenback cutthroat trout recovery program, established to help protect the species after it was designated as an endangered species in 1973. Up until now, populations of Western Slope cutthroats transplanted to the Front Range were mistaken as greenbacks.

The recovery team was on track to meet some of the plan’s benchmarks in the near future, but the finding that the greenback population is smaller than previously believed will force a reevaluation of those

benchmarks. The remaining greenbacks are also threatened because they live in a populated area.

With this new information, the Fish and Wildlife Service has created a protected brood stock of the Bear Creek cutthroats at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery so that new wild populations can be established in the future.

WEATHER LINKED TO GLOBAL WARMING

A new fact sheet released by Environment Colorado details the extent of the extreme weather conditions Coloradans have been facing all year. The conditions have been linked to global warming, and scientists warn of more extreme weather in the future unless carbon emissions are reduced, according to the release. The state has seen a 25 percent increase in extreme rain and snow between 1948 and 2012, and the average temperature between January and July is 5.3 degrees higher than in previous years.

“There are a lot of products that we grow in Colorado that go into California. If California did something like that, the cost of their regulation and the cost of their regulatory process would, in effect, probably impact Colorado ranchers and farmers in some way, shape, or form,” he says. “Chances are, it would be through the processors, so whoever our farmers and ranchers sell their products to, their raw commodities, they would be required to sign an affidavit or some sort of a record-keeping process that the processor can audit.

A report from the California Legislative Analyst’s Office estimates that somewhere between 40 percent and 70 percent of food products sold in grocery stores in California contain some genetically engineered ingredients, as do 88 percent of all corn and 94 percent of all soybeans produced in the United States.

“There is a lot of resistance from certain companies to be forced to change the way that they operate,” Daily says.

“GMOs are pretty prevalent in the current food supply.

There are groups out there that just want to see the status quo upheld and are not taking into account this really evident cry from Americans to see what’s in their food.”

Although Colorado has not seen any recent activity surrounding GMO labeling legislation or initiatives, it

is a topic the state has attempted to address in the past.

A bill that would have required the labeling of genetically modified foods in Colorado barely missed the ballot in February 2001 after being defeated in a 4-3 vote in a state Senate committee.

The process of how Proposition 37 got on the ballot in California could set an example for other states, including Colorado. Proposition 37 made it onto the November ballot with nearly 1 million signatures. The current signature requirement for initiative petitions in Colorado is 86,105.

Since the attempt to get legislation passed in Colorado failed, if California’s initiative passes, it may be wiser to create a petition for an amendment rather than relying on the legislature to take up the issue.

Cast with a mixed bag of eclectic characters, the audience follows in their quests for brut champagne powder, which, during an underwhelming 2011-2012 ski season, takes them to exotic locations around the world.

placing a heavy emphasis on their characters’ stories. Just as much time is devoted to crusty backcountry veterans as is devoted to the big names in freestyle skiing.

In the film, we meet a fresh-powder pilgrim who has paid homage at almost every mountain where snow has landed on Earth. He says he has been skiing at least one day a month for 178 months, including when he was briefly hospitalized with a neck injury.

When my wife and I first visited about three years ago, after participating (in our capacity as SpiritBear Paranormal, our part-time ghost-hunting franchise) in an investigation at a haunted Manitou B&B, the first thing we saw was a bloody deer leg lying on the main driveway.

Welcome to Crystal Valley, indeed.

But the deer legs were all intact last weekend, and they were joined by the legs of several dozen locals, all participating in a nighttime cemetery tour, hosted by Stephanie Waters and Colorado Ghost Tours. Waters, a writer, cancer survivor and Manitou resident, has made a cottage industry of guiding cameraphone-armed locals through some of the most legendarily haunted areas in the Colorado Springs area for a decade. She is also the author of a couple of books on haunted Colorado history, including Haunted Manitou Springs, and she is well-versed in the local lore of weird doctors, famous Indian fighters and shot-dead ne’er-dowells that make up the early days of the area’s history.

She was also joined by The Spirit Chasers, Christopher and James, a successful and energetic duo of ghost hunters from the area who have gained some local media notoriety for their abundantly documented investigations and their appearances on 26 October 25, 2012

radio programs and syndicated TV programs such as My Ghost Story. Set up with a portable DVD player, they reviewed and narrated some of the visual and audio evidence they have collected on their investigations, taking questions from the tour participants.

We were introduced to the group as both ghost hunters and local media, as we told Waters we were doing a story for a Boulder newspaper, and we followed Waters and her crew around for a spell, listening to the stories. There was the somewhat demented Dr. Isaac Davis, who had

donated the land for the cemetery and was a leading city figure (Manitou’s coroner, to be precise), but who also decided to practice embalming technique on the unclaimed body of a murdered gambler, and displayed his handiwork publicly on summer days to the horror of the Victorian civilians. There was the sad story of Emma Crawford, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 19 in 1891 and whose remains cascaded down from her requested resting place on Red Mountain in a rainsoaked muddy torrent after the railroad undermined the mountain’s slope. And there was the enterprising Austrian immigrant Theresa Kenny, who purchased her own plot 14 years before her death and who built her own mausoleum in her spare time, finally occupying it for good in 1943.

As iPhones blinked away against the night’s darkness, the guides took questions about spirit orbs and apparitions, told a few jokes and generally breathed life into the motionless headstones, reminding their patrons that stories lay beneath the cool, grassy soil, and that cemeteries are the places that join the present with the past, legend with fact and, tonight at least, the living and the dead.

For all the creepiness that cemeteries evoke at night, this one didn’t particularly feel haunted. It was pretty well lit from the lanterns, plenty of ambient streetlight, flashlights and the cityinstalled cemetery lighting, and the Boulder Weekly

three or four roving groups of cemetery tourists leaked plenty of voicenoise through the cemetery, which isn’t much bigger than, say, Boulder’s Columbia Cemetery on the Hill.

But we wandered off anyway, finally finding a darkened area by the grave of Charles Adams, U.S. Army Civil War veteran and allegedly a member of Col. John Chivington’s notorious Sand Creek detachment. Adams died in 1895, and his headstone is said to exude uncharacteristic warmth at night.

We ran our voice recorder for a few minutes, addressing the late Mr. Adams, and decided to fire off a few flash-lit pictures. Like a lot of ghost hunters, we tend to be pretty clinical and process-focused on the techniques of gathering evidence. It’s easy enough to slip into a certain frame of mind, standing at the headstone of someone long dead, in the dark, surrounded by headstones, with little but the whisper of wind in the trees. But the mind plays tricks on the senses in the dark, and the latent desire to hear a voice or see the shape of a spirit can easily coax the sensory-deprived mechanisms of the brain into actually seeing and hearing them. If you think there’s something to all this ghost stuff, and plenty of people don’t, you have to find a way to separate wishful thinking from actual evidence.

And thus, the camera and the recorders and the IR light. In pixels we trust.

I reviewed each of my snaps as I took them, and one in particular caught my eye. A nebulous cloud of light appeared at the right edge of the frame, with a brilliant orange orb in the center of the frame, and I immediately raised the camera and took another in the same direction. The shape and the orb were both gone in the second. The orb was not of much interest to me, but the vaporous cloud off to the side was.

I showed it around to the hosts and they found it interesting — “proof ” is a word rarely tossed about in ghost-hunting circles; even the most ardent believers concede that proving the existence of ghosts with technology is a very dicey proposition, even if thousands of Ghost Huntersinspired amateur groups around the country keep trying.

We packed up and headed home.

The next evening, my wife showed me another odd photograph that she captured at dusk, before the event got started. The dimming crescent moon hung behind some of the cemetery’s tall and mature trees, and to the left is an irregularly shaped light anomaly.

At first glance it suggested a bit of lens flare, but lens flares tend to markedly mirror the primary light source, and this one clearly did not.

We’ve shot thousands of photos on ghost hunts, and we’ve never seen anything quite like this.

gor Stravinsky: mashup artist?

Indeed, the great Russian composer was mixing up styles long before the term “mashup” was invented. And one of the best examples of his eclectic mixing is the opera The Rake’s Progress, which is being presented by the CU Opera this weekend (performances Friday and Sunday in Macky Auditorium: www.cupresents.org/events/rakesprogress).

Based on a series of engravings by the 18th-century satirical artist William Hogarth, the opera chronicles Tom Rakewell’s descent from rural pleasures into the decadence of London society, lured along by the satanic Nick Shadow, ending in madness and despair.

Dark Dark Dark’s indie rock makes for a cinematic experience

D

uring the 2011 Communikey Festival, a few hundred local hipsters packed the obscure and highly under-used Odd Fellows Hall on Pearl Street to see why Dark Dark Dark — a poignant Minneapolis-based indie-pop and chamber-folk group that plays old-world instruments — was playing an electronic music festival.

It turns out the band had been deeply involved with former bassist Todd Chandler’s incredible film Flood Tide, which found the musicians (as part of the artist Swoon’s Swimming Cities of the Serenissima project) building giant rafts out of found materials and living on them for a time as they sailed down the Hudson from Troy to Long Island City. At Odd Fellows, Dark Dark Dark played a live soundtrack to Flood Tide, which songwriter, singer and

multi-instrumentalist Marshall LaCount calls “part document of Swimming Cities, part fictional narrative, with a twist of environmental activism.”

According to LaCount, “All of us were involved in the Swoon project on many levels. Different incarnations of that project and community are one of the catalysts for Nona [Invie] and I starting this band, and significantly expanded our experience, our ambitions and our community.”

Dark Dark Dark, which debuted in 2008 with The Snow Magic, has always created exceptionally cinematic music, much of which would not be out of place in Tim Burton’s movies, although thus far the band’s songs have instead surprisingly appeared in the background on Grey’s Anatomy and see DARK Page 30

original instruments — acoustic banjo and accordion — reading Klezmer, wedding and traditional songs from Eastern European countries, and American folk,” LaCount says. “We’d play that stuff on the street or in loud bars. We’ve definitely spent a lot of time redefining and personalizing our sound, but people still hear these influences, for sure. There are also classical influences, punk bands, spoken word projects, really all kinds of influences happening.”

It’s almost impossible to point to another modern musical artist that Dark Dark Dark can aptly be compared to, although Joanna Newsom and others have recently also, as LaCount describes, brilliantly made “classical and world instruments fair game in indie and folk music.” He cites the soundtracks to films like Waking Life and Amelie as partial inspirations for that movement toward progression via antiquity.

LaCount, who told me he has “no idea” how his stormy relationship with Invie has informed Dark Dark Dark’s music, has said that the two made a pact at the beginning of their romance to make the music survive no matter what happened between them. Despite some fairly brutal Invie-penned lyrics on Who Needs Who that touch on the breakup and have been described by her as hurtful but honest, LaCount says the strong friendship within Dark Dark Dark is “one of the reasons we can last.”

“Sometimes we may go eight hours without talking, and then spend two hours laughing our asses off about nothing,” he says. “Somehow we generally know how to create the personal space we need when there is no space at all.”

American Idol. Dark Dark Dark’s original Flood Tide score saw the band growing, or simply discovering, its musical capabilities.

“As far as sound,” LaCount says, “I think we did start expanding our dynamic range and some of the improvisation we were ‘allowing’ ourselves to do in [our] usual live setting, in working on the film. We did it in a very Neil Young Dead Man scoring kind of fashion, at least from our understanding [spontaneously composing music while watching a film with very little dialogue]. Noisier and more textural things carried into our songs a little more quickly from working on accompanying the film.”

Dark Dark Dark’s new album, Who Needs Who, isn’t exactly Neil Young shredding away on Old Black. But its intermittent smidgens of distorted guitar bursts are surely a departure from the deeply intimate, spooky and almost baroque sensibility of 2010’s Wild Go, which singer-pianist Invie nods to on Who Needs Who’s title track.

Invie — whose romantic relationship with LaCount ended just before Who Needs Who was recorded — is most comfortable and powerful conveying her bold poetry with just a piano and her wispy voice, or when also accompanied by slow, buoyant bass and gently brush-stroked drums. NPR correctly described her voice as “flexible, penetrating, shedding both light and shadow on the meaning of her lyrics.” And both are necessary when contemplating lines like “I have the memory of trust / I try to keep it close / I swallow it whole / from the mouth of you.”

LaCount says that he and Invie, who have been close for many years, share a musical upbringing.

been really liberating for us, because it has this feeling of from a long time ago, yet present, yet future. We’re not tied into certain body movements, [and] we can use a lot more modern expressive tools in our gestures.”

Carthy explains that The Rake’s Progress, first performed in 1951, was the climax of Stravinsky’s fascination with neo-classicism.

“Neo-classicism was a reaction against the over-emotionalities of the Romantic period,” he says. “Stravinsky very much embraced neo-classicism. He was a magpie, he would steal the jewels of others just to make them shine more brightly in his own firmament.

“So there are dozens and dozens of

quotes, but it’s not just quotes from classical music. It’s styles. There’s the Baroque da capo aria with its variations, there’s the harpsichord used for the recitatives, there’s the (19th-century) bel canto aria, and then right at the end he reaches way back into Greek drama, where the chorus is the collective commentator on the proceedings.

“The whole thing is enormously clever,” Carthy sums up. “This is a fantastically complex, wonderful piece. It has great words, great music and a great story — and it’s a spectacle, as opera should be.”

hen people find out that Ralena Gordon spends her time photographing abandoned mental institutions, often the first question they ask is about ghosts.

The old hospitals are haunting, she agrees, but mostly sad.

“My desire was to sort of remove that stigma that was attached to these places. Yes, they’re haunting, they’re spooky and they’re big, they’re architecturally stunning,” she says. “I’ve definitely had experiences that have thrown me off and it makes me believe the spiritual realm of this place. But it’s more tragic. You feel sadness more than the scariness of it.”

Gordon’s first visits to an abandoned mental hospital were like so many other people’s — she went to get a little scared. But as she was finishing her bachelor’s degree at Goddard College in Vermont in 2007, the Nederland native started photographing them as a part of a senior project. She took photos of eight institutions for that project, but was met with enough questions about her work she decided she was on to something that needed to be explored further.

Now, she’s photographed 56 of them, in 28 states. She started by trespassing on the grounds, photographing only the building exteriors. At this point, she works where she can get approved access, and superintendents will open the doors or staff will give her guided tours. Her photos show a similar move from voyeuristic shots through leaves and branches to more intimate images, quiet and familiar. She works alone and yes, she says, sometimes it’s kind of spooky, but the initial shock of what she finds in these abandoned places has mostly worn off.

Visiting a haunting history

Photographer captures abandoned mental hospitals

by Elizabeth Miller that surrounds the way the mentally ill are treated in America. As she dug more into the history of the buildings, reading books and newspaper reports, she unearthed stories about the institutionalization of people for everything from being a menopausal woman to being an immigrant with foreign customs that looked, well, crazy.

“It’s a sad history. There’s a ton of misunderstanding of mental illness,” she says. “There were a lot of experimental treatments that were done inside these places that look more like torture than care, and it’s all part of the history.”

The remaining emptied buildings, all built before the 1920s, are huge, their architectural touches often startlingly graceful and ornate, considering they were meant to house a population that people wanted shut out of sight.

Demolishing the buildings, which are

often riddled with asbestos, would demand funding from an already financially strapped system. So, as the decades have rattled by, they’ve been reclaimed by plants and wild animals. Walls of brick have become walls of creeping vines interrupted only by a door to a dark interior, where paint curls away from the walls and stray furniture lingers in empty rooms.

“There’s just so much stuff inside of them,” Gordon says. “It’s as if people just got up and left, like, calendars still on the floor and patient records and things that should have been taken care of but weren’t.”

She doesn’t move these items, and works quickly to capture what she finds in the few hours she has access to the building. She’ll emerge with as many as 600 photos. Her visits are squeezed into two- or three-week trips in which she

She’s been back to only a couple of them. Mostly, there hasn’t been time to revisit the institutions she’s already photographed. The work to get photos to represent instititions in every region of the country is a continual project that still consumes all available time and money.

Though she’s often faced with low light, she says a flash ruins the feel, and there often isn’t time or space to set up a tripod.

“It’s a good challenge. It forces you to be creative,” she says.

Some of the hundreds of former institutions around the country are being or have been repurposed, turned into jails or schools. A couple in the Midwest are shopping centers.

Some have been demolished. Some will simply languish until more affordable forces than a demolition crew take them down.

As her work has gone deeper, she’s met with former employees and former patients of these institutions to record their stories. She’s started putting together a Ken Burns-style documentary to record their stories.

“People just want to be heard,” she says. “A lot of them came from families where they’ve never had an outlet.”

One in four adults over 18 is afflicted with some form of mental illness, from anxiety to depression to schizophrenia. With mental illness being so prevalent, she says, it’s just not something we can afford to ignore.

“Institutions may not have been the answer, but is the alternative better?” she asks.

A fundraiser Oct. 26 at which she’ll sell images and screen a teaser of the documentary will support her ongoing travel to visit these institutions and work on collecting interviews.

Only the Keeper of Memories has access to them through the knowledge of the world as it once was. Periodically, the old Keeper must act as the Giver and transfer all of this knowledge to the new Receiver. Looking much like Donald Sutherland, Denver Center Theatre Company veteran Philip Pleasants plays the Giver. His portrayal is masterful yet understated.

In an apotheosis of sameness, the citizens of the future even control the weather, keeping things presumably at a nice 70 degrees and sunny all the time.

So when the Giver gives Jonas the memory of snowfall and sledding, the boy’s mind is quite nearly blown. Snow is followed closely by rainbows and extinct animals like elephants, but for every feel-good memory Jonas must also take in a negative one. The pain of hunger is a new experience, but it is far

less uncomfortable than the reality of warfare.

As his eyes are opened to a much wider and more varied world than he has ever dreamed existed, Jonas begins to question all the sameness. Why, he asks, can’t everyone share the memories, see the colors and feel the joy and pain of life?

Control, of course, is the answer. And for the play, the final question becomes how will Jonas use the memories with which he has been entrusted.

From the opening, dissonant minor chords composed by Gary Grundei to the use by Charlie I. Miller of projections to communicate the memories, every production aspect of The Giver draws the viewer into this quietly oppressive future. The actors all manage their roles well.

For me, though, The Giver felt more like a cautionary tone poem than a fully realized play. If I were still a YA, I think I would have connected with it on an emotional level, but as a full-blown adult I couldn’t get past some of the internal inconsistencies and plotting stumbles.

Though it may not thrill parents, The Giver should get rave reviews from their offspring. It certainly presents a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a night out at the theatre.

econciling the public’s fascination with Emma Watson’s blossoming sexuality with realizing that the first time she was on screen she was 11 years old is really difficult.

Doing so in a movie where her character’s sexuality is fundamentally warped because of an experience at 11 years old feels like a pretty clear indictment of said fascination. So if we could take a second from obsessing over the emerging womanhood of someone who grew of age in the spotlight as we do with every starlet, maybe we’d notice that Watson’s performance is the sole reason The Perks of Being a Wallflower works more than it doesn’t.

Based on writer/director Stephen Chbosky’s massively popular comingof-age novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is either brilliant in its accurate portrayal of high-school life in the 1990s or clichéd to the point that it feels like freshman-level creative writing, depending on your perspective. Logan Lerman plays Charlie, a psychologically damaged freshman prone to a nebulous and undefined condition wherein he blacks out, sees things and sometimes gets suicidal or violent based on an array of psychologically damaging experiences. Friendless, he is embraced by a step-sibling pair of semi-social pariah seniors: Patrick (Ezra Miller) and Sam (Watson).

Patrick is punished for being a flamboyant and fearless gay teen, while Sam is somewhat shunned for having

able until Watson, Lerman and Miller bring their exceptional talents to bear on the never-original material.

Lerman, who was once rumored for Spider-Man and would have been a better choice than Andrew Garfield, resists the urge to overact and mostly nails a shy leading role. Miller sizzles as the type of brazen and inspiringly self-accepting gay teenage character that is simply not fictionalized enough.

And then there’s Watson. Boyhowdy, is she something. Even fighting through a sometimes badly concealed accent, she demonstrates her ability to be a non-derivative object of desire while fleshing out a three-dimensional character based on the type of girl we all remember. She is luminous and nuanced, sincere and show-stopping in a performance sure to be overlooked because of her age and the generic J.D. Salinger delusions of the author.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is the sort of film that will destroy angsty teenagers and new twentysomethings who can still taste their introduction to adulthood. For the rest of us, there’s only a vague sense of appreciation.

While this will be the best film of the year for certain folks, for the rest of us, it’s just decent nostalgia fueled by a great performance.

As dating is wont to do, romance quickly produces fissures in this gang of buds, all the while each of the three main protagonists deal with supremely disturbing levels of psychological trauma.

The first half of The Perks of Being a Wallflower is trite and rather stupid. Films like Super 8 get blasted for trafficking in nostalgia, while coming-of-age stories peddle it wholesale, none worse than the first act of this high-school drama. Indeed, things look nigh-irredeem-

‘Seven Psychopaths’ is worth the risk

ith massive mainstream media marketing rollouts and the box office boons reaped by free social media, movies so rarely surprise us these days.

Shock cameos are spoiled in the space of a tweet, while most trailers render buying the proverbial “movie cow” moot when you got the “third-act milk” for free in the preview.

Guess what? You’re so not ready for Seven Psychopaths.

And don’t worry about it being spoiled for you. It’s virtually unspoilable in its originality and scope. Telling you that one of the best scenes involves Tom Waits as the bunny-stroking half of an interracial serial killerkilling duo doesn’t dampen the experience. Even revealing that the whole flick is more Charlie Kaufman than Quentin Tarantino won’t ruin the surprise that’s in store. Now, by no means is it perfect, but just like in gymnastics, when you start with this high a degree of difficulty, you don’t have to stick a perfect landing to light up the scoreboard.

Having to write a synopsis for this feels mean.

Okay, so Colin Farrell is Marty, an Irish screenwriter with a drinking problem still in the denial stage. He’s working on a screenplay called, wait for it, Seven 42 October 25, 2012

Psychopaths. His friend, Billy (Sam Rockwell), wants to help him but is also busy dognapping pooches with Hans (Christopher Walken), who is also tending to his cancer-stricken wife (Linda Bright Clay). When Billy steals the canine of a bad, bad man (Woody Harrelson), Hans, Marty and Billy wind up on the run in the middle of the desert, camping and doing peyote.

That’s the best that can pass for a synopsis of writer/director Martin McDonagh’s latest one-third violent, one-third hilarious and one-third philosophical endeavor. What’s sad is that Alan Arkin’s casual turn in Argo is likely to obliterate the chance for Walken to win best supporting Oscar in what is so easily the finest performance of the second half of his career. Even Farrell is downright great; somewhere there’s a mathematical algorithm that proves when he doesn’t have to mask his accent, he’s pretty brilliant. And if you don’t like an unchained Rockwell performance, you may have damaged the part of your brain that feels joy.

That said, McDonagh isn’t quite as seamless as Kaufman in the “meta moments.” Having his characters all

but announce “the second half of this movie is going to be totally different than the first” isn’t really clever so much as a bit lazy. And there may be one or two extra plot diversions, like Harrelson and Farrell’s girlfriends. But that’s somewhat forgiven because their inclusion allows McDonagh to make an on-screen admission about the role of women in film through Walken that is absolutely vital.

Look, it’s hard to go wrong when you have Tom Waits stroking a rabbit while talking about cutting people’s heads off. Combine that with a not-subtle-atall indictment of this culture’s obsession with revenge fiction and brutality mixed with a rather sizable amount of laughs and you have one of the more brazenly original films of the year. This is to say, if you see only one movie where Harry Dean Stanton plays a throat-slitting Quaker this year …

A new kind of crawl

Dishcrawl is Boulder’s latest culinary adventure

W

hile Boulder’s infamous Halloween “Mall Crawl” was discontinued many years ago, the community is getting a different kind of “crawl,” one that is more about getting tasted than getting wasted.

Dishcrawl is similar to regular bar crawls, except instead of drinking, participants savor dishes from local chefs and restaurants. It will descend on four Pearl Street restaurants on Nov. 13.

Dishcrawl is an idea that originated in the Bay Area of California. Tracy Lee, the founder, says that the idea for the business came when she began to feel unhappy about working 40-hour weeks at her corporate job. What came out of that was an innovative food adventure.

“I just decided to start my own company and I wanted to do a tech startup and a food blog at the same time,” says Lee. “So everything sort of came together when we decided to do a food startup.”

Since its launch two years ago, the business has expanded to more than 30 different cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Vancouver and Toronto. She

says that the business centers on bringing people together with good food and giving them the chance to know their local restaurant businesses better.

“Things like that are so lost these days,” she says. “People get so busy, everything is so much online, and what we realize with doing these events is we actually bring the community together, and we’re allowing them to get to know their local restaurants and local businesses in their own backyard.”

The first Dishcrawl event was held in Santa Fe, where 80 people came out and “crawled” their way through restaurants downtown. Lee says that she was quite overwhelmed by the size of the group and has since decided to organize Dishcrawls on a smaller scale.

“Typically Dishcrawls are anywhere between 20 to 60 people,” she says. “We decided to make the Dishcrawls a little bit smaller, you know, more intimate, but we do a lot of larger events and for different markets.”

The larger events that Lee talks about are referred to as Dishwalks or Beerwalks, which are self-guided food and drink

adventures through multiple restaurants.

Dishwalks consist of eight restaurants, while Dishcrawls typically only have about four, making them more intimate.

A local Dishcrawl event usually happens on a monthly basis, and can be anything from dining at a gluten-free or vegan restaurant to visiting a number of restaurants and trying a multitude of different types of cuisines.

During Dishcrawls, Lee says, restaurant owners and chefs are able to step out of the kitchen or office to talk about their food and mingle with the group of customers, giving businesses a chance to connect with the community.

“We spend so much time helping them promote their local businesses as well, from social media,” she says. “We invite bloggers out as well and encourage the whole community to help explore these businesses.”

Lee says that the expansion of Dishcrawl came with the help of what she calls an “ambassador program” where locals from different places can sign up to

Peter Likins is Boulder’s ambassador for Dishcrawl. He wanted to engage with the community after hearing that Boulder was named one of the “foodiest” towns in America, and Dishcrawls were a good match for his natural foodie side.

“I found out about it online and it looked really interesting, and I thought of it being sort of a social phenomenon … kind of like engaging the locals, getting people together and co-mingling,” says Likins. “And then I noticed the other aspect of it is doing a lot to promote the restaurants and local business, and that aligns with my goals pretty well.”

Likins is putting the finishing touches on the first Dishcrawl Nov. 13 event, which begins at 7 p.m. However, he isn’t allowed to disclose the names of the restaurants that have agreed to participate.

“I’m not allowed to tell actually, until 48 hours before the event,” he says. “But that’s part of the allure, it’s kind of a mystery, like you know the neighborhood, but 46 October 25, 2012

who in the neighborhood is participating, so that’s kind of the fun of it too.”

Like Likins, Jennifer Roos of Boulder considers herself a foodie. She runs Boulderfoodie, a personal food blog that details her experiences from attending food events and farm dinners as well as serves as a repository for personal recipes.

Roos says that she is looking forward to attending Dishcrawl Boulder because it sounds different.

“I’ve gone on a local downtown tour, but this sounds really cool because it’s a bigger group,” she says.

Roos believes events like these are a great place to meet people who share similar interests and also a chance to get to know more about local food.

“When you’re obsessed with food, you kind of think you’re a little weird sometimes,” she says. “It’s so fun to find somebody that’s as into it as you are.”
