e at Boulder Weekly love putting together our annual Best of Boulder East County issue because the restaurants, retail businesses, entertainment opportunities, and interesting people and places are all chosen by you, our readers — except of course for the categories identified as staff picks. Every year, folks from around the county log onto our reader survey and select their favorite places to eat, drink, shop, exercise and do just about everything else. We tally the votes and award a Best of East County winner for myriad categories in food, drink, fitness and health, entertainment, and retail. We also recognize the top vote-getters in individual cities in East County. This year, we imagine the choice for the best people and places in East County was harder than ever — never have there been so many options for fine and casual dining, craft beer, exercise and recreation, shopping, and nightlife as there are today. As the communities in East County grow, so does the abundance and diversity of cultural and business offerings that enrich our lives. So, take this issue home and store it in a safe place. If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to check it often the next time you need, say, new tires, a great place to eat Thai food or a night of live music. Happy exploring.

here is an art to sushi-making, as anyone who’s seen 85-year-old sushi master Jiro demonstrate in the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi. But it can take decades to perfect the craft. “I do the same thing over and over, improving bit by bit. There is always a yearning to achieve more. I’ll continue to climb, trying to reach the top, but no one knows where the top is,” Jiro says, rolling another seaweed tube of rice, fish and vegetables. The chefs at Sushi Hana, our readers say, possess a similar commitment to perfection, but don’t take their word for it. Head there yourself and ask for the chef’s choice special. You’ll be pleasantly surprised every time, guaranteed.

o, first, the bad news: You can only get LaMar’s donuts in five states across the U.S., so if you’re thinking about planning a LaMar’s Donuts-fueled road trip, you shouldn’t plan anything west of Arizona or east of Missouri. Eh. Now, the good news: Colorado has more LaMar’s donut shops than any other state. Something tells us Boulder Weekly readers are proud of that, especially since the specialty donut shop’s headquarters are now located in our Rocky Mountains, too. Pop into the shop every day of the week to try the exciting, rotating flavors and you’ll probably realize, again, Colorado’s got every ingredient you’d ever need for happiness.

MOE’S BROADWAY BAGEL

W

hen our readers want the baked dough perfection of the round ring that we call bagels, they head over to Moe’s Broadway Bagel. Its 20 flavors of bagels are timetested and richly flavored — the Italian (everything) bagel explodes in the mouth with herb and spice, and the cinnamon raisin is perfectly flavored and weighted, for example. But the offerings don’t stop there; get a Manhattan bagel loaded with cream cheese and lox, or choose from the ample selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches and variety of flavored cream cheeses. These bagels stack up against the best that New York has to offer.

ust say “lunch buffet” and we’ll be over to Taj Mahal III before the word “naan” can even leave your mouth. Why? Because our readers tell us it’s the absolute best place to go for spectacular Indian cuisine. For lunch, choose between an array of curries and masalas, saags and vindaloos, plus piping-hot naan and aromatic Basmati rice. Stop in to this elegantly decorated restaurant for dinner, be on the lookout for dishes from the tandoori oven — Taj Mahal III’s specialty meals baked to order in a clay oven over mesquite charcoal and served with mint-cilantro and tamarind chutneys.

or Sarah Ingraham, general manager of Lafayette’s The Post Brewing Company, this fun dining and drinks hotspot is not just a place to “get some delicious food or catch up with friends over a refreshing beer.” For her, it’s a place that’s more than the sum of its parts; it’s “a home-awayfrom-home to anyone who walks in the door.” That’s exactly the kind of sentiment you’ll experience across all Post establishments: Friendly service that makes you feel right at home as you nosh on crispy bone-in fried chicken or the famous chicken and waffles, with a cold one nearby. Head there for brunch, lunch, dinner, happy hour or any other time you want quality food from quality people in a quality place.

hat can we say about Moxie Bread Co. that hasn’t been said already? Lousiville’s heirloom wheat bakery has earned the accolades of probably every local and state publication, and owner/baker Andy Clark earned a prestigious James Award nomination for his efforts. The magic starts with a commitment to using delicious, nutricious ancient grains, which are manipulated into a variety of breads, pastries and sandwiches. The king egg is a local favorite — think about a buttery, dense popover loaded with a fried egg, cheese, and meat or veggies. But get anything — really get anything — from the tartine with lox and herb to the avocado toast on blackened crusty bread and you’ll see what all the fuss is about.

T

he Kakura family, which launched 95a Bistro & Sushi in 2011, knows appetizers — they spent 18 years growing The Mediterranean Restaurant into the award-winning tapas bar and app haven it is today. So it’s no surprise that our readers chose 95a as their favorite place to eat small plates. The menu of tapas and appetizers is extensive and features fan favorites like house-made coconut shrimp, lamb skewers with zucchini-potato pancakes, crab cakes with lemon dill aioli and Korean BBQ ribs with a sisho apple slaw. Don’t miss Italian staples like prosciutto and melon, caprese salad, and pork and ricotta meatballs.

here are people who haven’t been to one of The Post Brewing Company’s three Boulder County locations to sample the world-class fried chicken and American cuisine and to glug down the housemade brew. Two people, to be exact: Frank and Lisa. Frank and Lisa don’t like humanely raised, all-natural chicken brined for hours and dipped in buttermilk, then dredged in gluten-free flour and fried to crispy perfection. They don’t like it served with waffles, they don’t like it served Nashville hot. They won’t eat it in a bed, they won’t eat it in a cot. They don’t like The Post’s impossibly savory oven-roasted pork shoulder with caramelized onion marmalade, nor do they like wood-fire-roasted squash succotash with sweet and sour peppers. Don’t be like Frank and Lisa. Listen to our readers and indulge at The Post.

That’s probably why our readers say Morning Glory Cafe has the best gluten-free offerings, because these folks sweat the details and use only fresh, organic and sustainable ingredients. Head there for a tasty brunch experience, with gluten-free pancakes, an array of omelettes and skillet scrambles on the menu. Or, pop in for lunch or dinner, where you’ll find vegan and vegetarian dishes of every shape, size and color, in addition to seafood and meat options that round out an international menu.

This Louisville establishment is named after the City of Parma, Italy, known for all sorts of food (Parmigiano Reggiano cheese ring a bell, anyone?), but especially filled pastas like tortellini, ravioli and anolini — which you should definitely order when you go. Well, that and something off the mozzarella bar, where you’ll find a selection of cheeses and condiments like pesto, salami, grilled vegetables and so much more. JAPANESE

oes a more exciting gastronomical destination exist than the Japanese islands? The cuisine at once comforts, challenges, surprises and soothes, and we suspect it has something to do with the country’s access to the ocean. Fresh fish, fresh air and high spirits are all things that come along with living near the beach — and Sushi Hana captures that essence in its fresh sushi, sashimi and nigiri, its light and fun atmosphere, and its friendly staff.

hat do sea monsters eat?” Reelfish Fish & Chips asks on its website (psst, “Fish and ships” is the answer). It’s this kind of humor and good charm that has prompted readers’ to yet again choose Reelfish Fish & Chips as the best place to get seafood in all of East County. Each day is themed at this family-friendly restaurant. On Mondays, you got kids eating for free; Tuesdays bring tacos; Wednesdays feature Cajun-style catfish and hush puppies (mhmm); Thursdays have oysters at every table; Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays rock “Walleye Weekend” like no other. Or how about the Famous Penicilin, made with Famous Grouse Blended Scotch, ginger, honey and lemon? PLACE TO GET PSYCHOLOGICALLY CONDITIONED

GEORGIA BOYS BBQ

250 Third Ave., Longmont, 720-999-4099

SUSAN FRANCE

E

veryone in East Boulder County knows that Georgia Boys BBQ makes some bad-ass barbecue. But when these meat-smokin’ wizards decided to move the Longmont location from its original tiny white house to the new, larger location up the street, there was another benefit beyond more seating; it now has a great little bar in the middle of the dining room with an always-friendly bartender. The best part is, you can walk in, place an order to-go, sit at the bar and drink exactly two beers before your buzzer goes off telling you your order is ready. It’s crazy, like they have cameras or something. Check it out for yourself, it’s truly Pavlovian. As soon as you pour that last delicious swallow of your second beer into your mouth, the buzzer goes off and someone hands you bags of amazing food. This is just the kind of psychological conditioning we love, and we think you will too.

efore /pôr/ wine house came around, what in the world did everyone do when they wanted a glass of exceptional wine, served in an exceptional atmosphere? We’re not quite sure, to be honest, but we are sure our readers were quick to point to /pôr/ as soon as “wine” appeared on the Best of Boulder East County questionnaire. Just off Main Street, this Louisville establishment does a great job at transporting you to a place far, far away from the hustle and bustle of life. Take a seat in the charming bar, swirl the goodness in your glass and give thanks the wine-experts are here to stay.

ere’s the thing: Life really wouldn’t be complete without the presence of lattes. Think about it, they’re everywhere. Walk any main street block in Boulder County and you’ll be called in by signs advertising this version of latte with coconut cream, or that version with nutmeg spice. Lattes are sort of like the measuring stick of a coffeehouse’s prowess. Taste a shop’s best latte and odds are you’ve tasted a pretty good representation of its skill. At Ozo Coffee Company, our readers say, you take one sip, and you know you’re at the best of the best. With options ranging from classic to matcha varieties, Ozo’s creamy concoctions not only call you in, but they keep you coming back again and again.

eander right down Sleepytime Drive, past the dozens of prairie dogs poking their heads up with a kinda-cute, kinda-creepy “Howdy-doo?” Soon you’ll arrive at the best teahouse in all of East County. The fine folks at Celestial Seasonings serve 105 different varieties of tea (OK, pause: those suffering from multiple-choice-induced anxiety, stop reading now and just go visit with someone whose opinion you trust). One hundred and five! And they claim to serve up 1.6 billion cups of tea each year to the 2.1 million visitors that tour the Celestial Seasonings factory. Open nearly every day of the year, take your own spin through the production center; it’ll give you enough time to sift through the 105 options so when you sit down in the tasting room, you know exactly what you’re getting.

verything in this microbrewery started with Kristin and Ryan Scott. They put their heads together one day and decided, “Aha! Our very own microbrewery with a fun and eclectic personality. Genius!” Then they called a fella named Jesse Glenn, one of Ryan’s childhood friends. They convinced him to style up some artwork for the cans and bottles, adding a real quirky touch. But he couldn’t do it all himself, so they called up Kyrie Webb, asked her to design some more fun labels, and she said yes. Then Matt Peck got on board with some photography, and Ryan’s cousin Joshua Gerics, too. Some very understanding family members filled in all the other gaps of beer production, and voila, Odd13 Brewing, our readers’ very favorite small batch brewery in East Boulder County, was born.

30 S. Main St., Longmont, 303-772-9797

very Friday night something beautiful occurs in Longmont. McCarthy’s Pub turns on the karaoke machine and a room full of total strangers consisting of folks from every walk of life from bikers to students to working stiffs are transformed into a tight-knit crew of lounge singers shedding tears together while belting out old hairband ballads as if their significant other just left them yesterday. So next time you find yourself bemoaning the fact that there isn’t anything new to do, just shut-up, drive on over to McCarthy’s, get a pitcher of Bud and belt out a duet with a biker. It will be the best time you’ve had in years. Or just order another round of Malbec and sit and stare at each other. Your choice.

f Starbucks were a high school senior, we’re pretty sure we know what would be written all over its yearbook. It’d be a dozen variations of: “Hey Starbs, you’re great; don’t change.” The consistency of this mind-bogglingly expansive coffeehouse network is more than commendable. Order a latte in Peru and it’ll taste like one in New York; sit down at a cafe in Japan and it’ll feel eerily similar to one in Berlin. This goes for the Wi-Fi, too, making the Starbucks megachain a magnet for people needing not only a caffeine fix, but an internet fix. MARTIAL ARTS

I

T

here are few things more powerful than when the “Yes I can!” mentality comes knocking on a person’s brain. And this is the exact mental attitude that the Louisville TaeKwonDo Family Center wants to help cultivate in anyone that walks through its doors — it’s a place where everyone can go (children, women and men of all ages and physical abilities) to participate in either private or group martial arts training exercises. With nationally ranked instructors leading the charge, Louisville TaeKwonDo Family Center strives to go beyond the physical aspects of martial arts and help each student reach their full potential. As their motto states, the goal is to instill “knowledge in the mind, honesty in the heart, and strength in the body.”

uring a LASIK treatment, a laser is beamed at your eye and can manipulate the eye’s refractive errors — things that lead to nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatisms — in order to get you seeing crystal clear again. At Colorado Eye Center, they know this can be a bit of a scary procedure at times, which is why they’ve launched a co-management program that ensures consistency of care throughout your entire eye-care journey. Building relationships and consistency are values the 55-year-old establishment holds near, and it’s something our readers love to applaud. You’ll get the same doctor that helped during your consultation to perform your surgery and then follow up with you and your eyes, indefinitely. Now that’s a difference maker. I

It seems to be a little rare that you meet a true Colorado native, but the Martinez family is one of the lucky few. Their family tree can be traced back to the first settlers in the San Luis Valley in the 1700s. Even after a 30 year stay in California, they couldn’t shake their roots, returning to Colorado 1994 and choosing Longmont as the perfect spot to grow their family and business. They invested themselves in the community and their family grew that investment. Their three sons have gone through the stages of doing chores around the store as kids, to learning installation and leading their own crews as they got older, moving on to selling the product and now two of their three sons are equal owners with their parents. That means they know every single aspect of the business from

BEST CARPET STORE the bottom up. So customers can be comfortable in knowing that they understand every detail of what they do and that Family Carpet One Floor & Home Inc. is truly a family business. They don’t keep that sense of family to themselves, though. They treat every customer that steps through their door as one of their own. And just as they would for any family member, they provide only the best in products and services. Flooring consultants will help you get started on choosing the right type of flooring for your home, family lifestyle and budget. They carry exclusive brands like Lees, CORETEC Luxury Plank, Invincible and Innovia that you can trust to be

durable and fashionable. From high quality vinyl tile and laminate, stain-resistant carpets and trendy tiles, to the latest styles in hardwood flooring, the largest inventory in town is their claim to fame. They’re so sure you’ll love it that they offer The Beautiful Guarantee on select items. If you aren’t happy with your qualifying floor for any reason, they’ll replace it at no cost to you. When it comes time to install the flooring they don’t abandon you to a subcontractor they may or may not know. Their installation experts stand behind everything they do with a “Life of Floor” warranty. They know your home is your palace and flooring is an investment that you consider carefully and you can rely on them to take care of it. A large national presence may lend them buying power and brand name associations but their local ownership lets them get to know their customers and community personally. The Martinez family invests in their town both as a business and in personal endeavors. They believe that enriching the lives around them is a privilege and an honor. “When we say ‘Our family, serving yours,’ we truly mean it,” Martinez says.

They now offer hands-on workshops for anyone looking to get crafty (with wood, paper and other craft practices), and they also sell boutique and unique retail items for you to take home with you. Pop in and odds are you’ll leave inspired to start following your own crafty passion.

et’s start with the golf course: 27 holes at the foreground of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Then there’s the Mokara Spa, where you can treat yourself to a relaxing getaway through massages, facials or other services. Oh, and the two outdoor heated pools right next to the whirlpool promise a whole new level of deep relaxation after the spa. With elegant meeting venues, nearly 400 guest suites and rooms and the Meritage Restaurant, it’s not hard to figure out why the Omni Hotels & Resort (Interlocken) is our readers’ first choice for a night away from home.

O

nce upon a time, in 1955, Glen and Dee Anspach were sitting around, admiring a Chamber of Commerce brochure from Boulder County, and they decided to pack up all their valuables and what little money they had and move straight to Lafayette from where they were living in Bozeman, Montana, at the time. When they arrived, the community took them in and essentially crowd-funded their startup watchmaking and jewelry business now known as Anspach’s Jewelry. Fast forward more than six decades, and here we are: The Anspach’s children and nieces and nephews are still running the business, which has remained a favorite in the community since its founding.

t Art Cleaners, dry cleaning experts are standing by to clean, press, fold, hang or otherwise take care of all your clothing needs from simple dress shirts (light starch please) to wedding gowns and everything in between. Heck, even if you’re a Harley rider and that wedding dress is leather, the folks at Art Cleaners can handle it. And best of all, they’ll do it using a silicon-based GreenEarth cleaning solvent that’s easier on the environment than traditional cleaners. No wonder Art Cleaners is the first choice in dry cleaning for the Green Biker Motorcycle Club of America. Okay, there’s no such thing, but if there were, they’d love Art Cleaners as much as our readers do.

ohl’s has a huge selection of women’s clothes. Just how big is it, you ask? Kohl’s is that place where every mom’s heart has skipped a beat or two when she couldn’t find one of her kids because little Suzie or Daryl decided to climb into any one of the three hundred or so round racks of hanging clothing and hide because all kids instinctively know that round clothing displays make really cool forts. On the upside, chances are that if mom just continues to shop until she drops, at some point she’ll pull the perfect skirt or blouse from a rack only to be greeted by her kid’s smiling face. And we all know such a reunion is almost as big a relief as finding our new favorite jacket on the 40 percent off rack. Winner! All kidding aside, our readers tell us that Kohl’s has the largest and best selection of women’s clothes in East County. So, grab a kid leash and have a stress-free day of shopping. CAR WASH
