fter a long summer packed with adventure, it’s a little hard to believe autumn has finally settled into Boulder County. But it’s true, and we can prove it. Every fall Boulder Weekly publishes our Best of Boulder East County edition, and here it is. Hence, it’s fall. This year, as always, we’re proud to showcase the businesses our readers have dubbed the best of the best in East Boulder County. Your votes give us insight into a wide range of businesses, from the best place to grab a bite to eat or a cocktail after work, to where to go to dance your cares away, get a good set of tires, buy your kid an instrument, find a snazzy new pair of glasses or even get inked up by some of the best tattoo artists in the county. It’s clear that you, our readers, are an eclectic and educated bunch, and we love how you celebrate businesses old and new in your communities. Thousands of you voted to honor the many businesses that make this place special. Each year we step back and see what our readers have to say, and that’s what’s so cool about Best of Boulder East County — it’s not the Boulder Weekly staff but our readers who decide who’s best. Your votes allow us to not only crown a business as the best of its kind in all of East County, but also to highlight the best businesses within a particular category in each community. Here’s how we do it. We take the top five vote getters in each category — the business with the most votes overall is named Best of East County. The business with the most votes from a particular community wins best of that town. If two or more of the top five vote getters were from the same town, then those with the second and third most votes in that town are listed as honorable mentions. So the top five businesses are listed, but not every town has a winner in every category. In instances wherein the business with the second most overall votes is from the same town as the overall winner, that business is given the title of Runner Up for East Boulder County. We hope you enjoy our Best of Boulder East County edition, and we encourage you to use it to discover new places that just might become your favorites as well. Respond: letters@boulderweekly. LULU’S BBQ

701 Main St., Louisville, 720-583-1789 Longmont Winner: Georgia Boy’s BBQ Company Lyons Winner: Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ & Taphouse Honorable Mention: KT’s BBQ (Broomfield); The Rib House (Longmont)

T

here’s nothing quite like authentic Texas Hill Country style BBQ, especially when it’s cooked low and slow. Ideally over wood chips and coal blocks of mesquite and hickory. Beef brisket and ribs cooked so painstakingly that they fall apart at the lightest touch. Tangy and rich vinegar or mustard sauces plop onto the little meatstack you’ve assembled and when it touches your tongue, it’s like dipping into an alpine hot spring on a chilly evening or rubbing aloe on badly sunburned quadriceps. Deliciously tasty, Lulu’s BBQ is right for any occasion, with their down home sides like fried okra and a backyard picnic atmosphere that will remind you of old times, right in the heart of downtown Louisville. ometimes we all need an escape, but it’s easier said than done. Instead of dropping a couple of grand on a luxurious trip to India, maybe take a Tuesday evening and head to Taj Mahal III in Louisville and let their fine Indian cuisine delight your senses and give your imagination the fuel it needs to transport your metaphysical self to the white marbled mausoleum on the bank of the Yamuna River. Start your journey with some vegetable samosas or perhaps chicken pakora. Then dive into the smoky taste of a tandoori dish, hot out of the oven and paired with mint-cilantro and tamarind chutneys. It’s hard to choose from the list of curries, masalas, kormas, saags, vindaloos, bhuna dishes and biryanis. Most entrees have a vegetarian option as well. Perhaps before you start your mental journey back home you’ll take in a creamy dish of kheer sprinkled with almonds and pistachio. At the end you’ll feel relaxed, full, cultured… and you won’t have dropped a couple of grand.

ce cream is made from milk. Milk comes from cows. This ice cream comes from sweet cows and colorful cows, and smiling cows. Although Sweet Cow Ice Cream has expanded into Denver and Boulder, the Louisville shop is the original, with original flare. Featuring 22 daily flavors, with nine year-round staples and two unique sorbets for nondairy folks, it’s difficult to choose which one to fill your waffle cone with. But don’t worry, the servers are fun, nice and accommodating so you can taste them all before purchasing just the right one.

olterra springs from the passion its famed chef, Bradford Heap, has for using locally produced foods at the peak of their freshness and flavor. Trained in both classic French and Northern Italian styles, Chef Heap has developed a large and loyal following of foodies who seek out the simple, clean flavors of his always imaginative dishes. Colterra has a fantastic stone patio under massive 100-year-old trees that give the restaurant an ambiance to match its food. Our readers have chosen wisely with this pick, to be sure.

usaba has been satisfying Boulder County residents with exquisitely prepared Southeastern Asian cuisine since 2010. In fact, we don’t need to tell you that — this is Busaba’s second consecutive year as reigning champ in the Best of East County Asian fusion category, so you’re well aware of the colorful delights Busaba has to offer, from chicken satay to tom yum to pad Thai to masaman curry. Wanna turn up the heat on that curry? Well, order it Thai hot and prepare to sweat like a bottle of Coke at an August barbecue in Atlanta. We warned you.

irst of all, let’s get this out of the way: The Roost is a great place for a business lunch. With its downtown Longmont location and a crazy wonderful menu that takes you from polenta to a spicy Thai salad to a short rib sandwich and all points of flavor in between, The Roost is a great way to impress a client or reward an employee. But more importantly, this restaurant represents the dream of its owners and that comes through loud and clear. It’s a place where creatives can shine and 10 percent of profits go to charity. In short, The Roost is good for business because it is anything but business as usual.

Locally known as a reliable place to get a timely sub, cheese steak or a variety of specialty sandwiches, the sandwich joint uses the freshest ingredients, meats and cheeses. They always manage to produce sandwiches quickly and accurately, made even more delicious by their homemade bread. uckleberries, if you’ve never had one, are quite tasty. They are related to the blueberry and taste much the same, especially the blue and purple varieties. hundred years ago, the ankle-high trees sprouting up along Franklin Street in downtown Niwot could never have imagined their future. They could never have predicted that one day they would be massive, six-story-tall, hundred-year-old trees looking down on the flagstone patio of Colterra, one of the state’s finest restaurants, watching patrons as they browse the extensive wine list at the tables next to the gardens. Inside, the historic old home that outdates the trees has been renovated into a contemporary white-tablecloth setting that has kept its multi-room coziness with earth tones and obvious attention to every detail. hat’s better than hot chicken and cold beer? Apparently nothing for our readers. That’s why they voted The Post Brewing Co. this year’s best overall restaurant in all of East County. Maybe it’s the fried chicken stacker for brunch, the chicken and waffles for lunch, the fried chicken biscuit for happy hour or the chicken bucket for dinner, all mixed with a plethora of brews, that convinced them. Or maybe it’s the assortment of non-chicken dishes and other adult and non-alcohol beverages that got their vote. More likely it’s a combination of all of the above, plus the authentic atmosphere and friendly, professional service. Regardless of the reason, the people have spoken, The Post Brewing Co. is a must visit in East County. 14 October 29, 2015

The Shack in Longmont hosts events ranging from 10-200 people, serving up Southern comfort food that would leave Paula Dean questioning her life’s work. The Boys will build a BBQ menu to suit the needs of your specific event, whether it’s a company picnic, wedding or charitable affair. Seriously, ya’ll, it’s some dang good barbeque.

But that’s not what this award is for. No, no. This gold star is for the food — the delicious grub that delights not just the taste buds, but a little thing Oskar Blues Brew & Grill likes to call the soul. What is the soul, you ask? It lives deep inside a smothered pulled pork sandwich and in the meat of smoky, slow-cooked ribs. It’s carried on the waves of live blues drifting through the air as you dip your deep fried pickles into some darn good dip, and it bubbles up inside as you sink your last bite of perfectly cooked burger with a gulp of Dale’s Pale Ale. Don’t let life suck your soul, keep it living large at Oskar Blues Brew & Grill.

ating outdoors, or “al fresco,” is a great way to spend an afternoon. In the open air at an accommodating bar or restaurant, you’ll get to hear the sounds of the wind, the bustling street and take in deep breaths of fresh air. No place is better to do that than Lucky Pie Pizza & Taphouse, according to our readers. With a great outdoor section to match their food and drinks, Louisville folks and those from around the County hail their family-friendly and happy outdoor space. It’s perfect for a lazy afternoon or summer lunch; a dinner under the stars or a quick drink at happy hour.

amples World Bistro in downtown Longmont is the perfect choice for a first date. It has stunning rooftop seating that screams you know all the cool places to go. It has a great happy hour menu that will let you be frugal while demonstrating you know what makes a great dining and dating experience. The next great feature for a first date is the fact that Samples specializes in small plates. If the date is going well, you can stretch it out indefinitely by just ordering another small plate to share. If the first date is clearly meant to be your last date, you can scarf down that first round of small plates and call it a night by 7 p.m. But most of all, Samples World Bistro is a fun place to go that will make a great first impression. And the BW staff guarantees that the martinis are most definitely up to snuff.

he baker is an integral part of any community. The breads, sweets, cookies, pastries and cakes they bake and sell signify happy occasions and allow us to take a second out of the day to make time for joy. Bakeries can transport us to our past by way of the familiar smells of baking dough or the memories of grandma’s favorite pie and mom’s special cookies. or millions of years, Colorado was covered by an ocean swarming with tropical fish — the long-lost ancestors of today’s shrimp and mahi-mahi. It’s easy to close your eyes and imagine those prehistoric waters lapping at your feet — especially with an icy rum punch in hand. Tortugas opened its doors 20 years ago and for two decades this Caribbean-style fish house has been serving up five-star paradise in the form of its famed jambalaya, Cuban mojo and etouffee. This place also boasts the best Jamaican Jerk this side of Kingston, crab and potato enchiladas to die for, and daily specials featuring mahi-mahi, grouper and other delectable fish all served with some combo of plantains, greens, potatoes and fresh fruit salsas. f pancakes are what you’re after, The Huckleberry is, well, your huckleberry. Located on the corner of Main and Pine streets in Louisville, you can’t miss The Huckleberry’s purple façade. Step inside and feel your cares melt away as the smell of fresh baked pies and pastries fills your nose before eventually filling your belly. Start off with a cup of tea, or perhaps an espresso, and then waste no time in ordering a king-sized stack of flapjacks loaded with wild-picked blueberries — that’s what you’re here for, after all.

f ever there was a reason to stop hitting snooze, The Huckleberry in Louisville is it — so wake up and greet the day with a funky country breakfast in this beloved Louisville restaurant. Nestled into bucolic Main Street, you’ll feel right at home in the bed-and-breakfast-like setting of The Huckleberry’s historic 1884 home. Once inside, the mingling scents of coffee and fresh baked pastries carry wholesome memories of home-cooked meals made with that all-important secret ingredient: love. The toughest decision you’ll face here is whether to order fluffy buttermilk pancakes, classic potato latkes or ol’ fashioned shrimp and grits — topped with farm fresh greens from the restaurant’s own farm, of course.

he people have spoken. In the land of microbreweries, our readers voted Left Hand Brewing Company the best microbrewery in East County, and for good reason. Dedicated to sustainability, this local microbrewery offers a variety of beer from their famous Nitro beers (Milk Stout, Sawtooth, Wake Up Dead) to their IPA staples to their seasonal and limited selections. It’s worth a flight tasting or even a brewery tour, trust us. In addition to the plethora of beer choices, this brewery is entrenched in the local community. Although the company has always donated a portion of their profits, they established the Left Hand Brewing Foundation in 2013, “committed to brewing a stronger community where we live, work and play.” What’s better than great beer and big hearts? here’s a lot you can say about The Post Brewing Co. that will get people in Boulder County to pay attention. For those in the know in these parts, just hearing that The Post is the brainchild of restaurateur extraordinaire Dave Query will get them excited. For those less foodie, knowing that The Post boasts about having the best fried chicken in the country should get you worked up, especially when you find out they searched the world over to find just the right hops to brew beer that matched their chicken perfectly. Take that Paula Dean, you amateur. But even with all that attention to detail, our readers picked The Post as best bar in East County because of its modern design and attentive bartenders. Voters give the big No. 1 foam finger to Pumphouse Brewery, which consistently has the sports playing and the food coming. Provide an environment in which each student is known, respected, and valued as an individual of great potential and promise. Our readers were smart enough to figure this out which is why they still chose Louisville Downtown Street Faire as their favorite East County festival/event. Now we all know that live music is at the center of the street faire events, but they are also far more than that. They are community in action. As the webpage likes to boast, it’s a place to spend a few summertime hours where “babies don’t cry, dogs don’t bark and wise elders feel nineteen again.” Can’t say it any better than that.

That music is often live, though sometimes it’s your favorite recorded tracks blasted over the speakers. Either way, get your dancing shoes on, and go to Nissi’s the next time you need to “boogie” down.

hat would life be without our furry family members? Cats and dogs bring us immense joy and comfort — they sleep by our sides at night and cuddle with us when we cry. n a world where success is measured by the amount and size of stuff hanging on the walls and from ceilings, Oskar Blues Home Made Liquids & Solids is surely the most successful place in the world. No really, it is. This giant, hoppin’ restaurant/bar/venue is best known as the place with the giant Oskar Blues silo and the always-full parking lot… and it’s a big parking lot. This constant popularity helps to explain why this establishment is the favorite spot around for an open mic night. What musician with his or her eyes set on the prize of making it to the top wouldn’t want to play before a packed house of fun-loving folks who love their music? ee-ya! Martial Arts are a way to stay in shape, learn self-defense and have fun all at once. Plus, nothing is cooler than going into a party and hustling poor saps named Todd into fighting you. Though, that may be against martial arts code of conduct. Anyway, you can learn the details of that code and, oh yeah, how to train your body to be a martial arts prodigy at Scornavacco Martial Arts Academy. he world is full of bad people. And heck, everyone has a bad day now and again. The woes of the world get twisted, turned, knotted and clustered in our bodies. But think of where we’d be if massages were a daily mandate. It’d be a world filled with relaxed and happy people. If you’d like to start creating this daily massage trend, our readers tell us that Massage Envy is the best. Make the world a better place, and go get massaged. Just think — we’d finally be able to achieve that world peace all those beauty queens have been talking about.

erbal Wellness claims to be Boulder County’s premier recreational marijuana dispensary and our readers agree. It has a vast assortment of strains and infused products to go along with more cool glass than you can shake a stick at, not that you would want to shake a stick at it. That would make no sense, but you get the point. Unless, of course, you have recently been recreationally using an Herbal Wellness product in which case this whole “stick” thing makes no sense at all, which is the point. In all seriousness, stop by and have a chat with the wellinformed, helpful staff of this year’s RMJ dispensary winner and they can guide you to exactly what you’re looking for.

Family Carpet One Floor & Home Ltd. 1401 Ken Pratt Blvd., Suite B Longmont 303.651.2011 familycarpetonelongmont.com Pictured are brothers John Paul and Jason It seems to be a little rare that you meet a true Colorado native, but the Martinez family is one of the lucky few. Their family tree can be traced back to the first settlers in the San Luis Valley in the 1700s. Even after a 30 year stay in California, they couldn’t shake their roots, returning to Colorado 1994 and choosing Longmont as the perfect spot to grow their family and business. They invested themselves in the community and their family grew that investment. Their three sons have gone through the stages of doing chores around the store as kids, to learning installation and leading their own crews as they got older, moving on to selling the product and now they are equal owners with their parents. That means they know every single aspect of the business from the bottom up. So customers can be comfortable in knowing that they understand every detail of what they

do and that Family Carpet One Floor & Home is truly a family business. They don’t keep that sense of family to themselves, though. They treat every customer that steps through their door as one of their own. And just as they would for any family member, they provide only the best in products and services. Flooring consultants will help you get started on choosing the right type of flooring for your home, family lifestyle and budget. They carry exclusive brands like Lees, Invincible and Innovia that you can trust to be durable and fashionable. From high quality vinyl tile and laminate, stain-resistant carpets and trendy tiles, to the latest styles in hardwood flooring, the largest inventory in town is their claim to fame. They’re so sure you’ll love it that they offer The Beautiful Guarantee. If you aren’t happy with your qualifying

floor for any reason, they’ll replace it at no cost to you. When it comes time to install the flooring they don’t abandon you to a subcontractor they may or may not know. Their installation experts stand behind everything they do with a “Life of Floor” warranty. They know your home is your palace and flooring is an investment that you consider carefully and you can rely on them to take care of it. A large national presence may lend them buying power and brand name associations but their local ownership lets them get to know their customers and community personally. The Martinez family invests in their town both as a business and in personal endeavors. They believe that enriching the lives around them is a privilege and an honor. “When we say ‘Our family, serving yours,’ we truly mean it,” Martinez says.

Nissan/Subaru put you behind the wheel of a great new car that will get you down the road for another 250,000 miles. And don’t forget to ask about their most eco-friendly rides. They’ve got plenty of them. Optical Store

nly three things in life are certain; taxes, death and a new set of tires at some point. Since we can’t fight them, we might as well figure out how to make all as painless as possible. According to our readers — who made no suggestions for the first two inevitabilities — the painless solution to buying that next set of tires is to head on over to Discount Tire and let their professional staff guide you to the best decision for your family’s safety and your pocketbook.
