BEST OF THE REST
Once upon a time, Boulder was the only game in town for restaurants, entertainment and shopping. Those days are long gone, but Boulder still tends to dominate when it comes to our annual rankings of the best local businesses. That’s why we started Best of Boulder East County, so that the proud residents of Louisville, Lafayette, Longmont, Erie and everywhere else could shout out their favorite places to drink, dine and do business. Not all the competitors are actually to the east — Lyons is distinctly west of Boulder — but they are all places who can easily get out-voted based on population alone.
If there’s one thing we’re all about, it’s repping the little guy.
Not that any of the businesses on this page are underdogs. They are delivering some seriously tasty grub and topnotch services that can hold their own anywhere on the Front Range.
So whether you’re an East County local looking to celebrate your neighborhood joint’s big W or a Boulderite who seriously needs to leave the bubble once in a while, we hope these pages can direct you to the very best of what Boulder County has to offer.

OVERALL RESTAURANT THE ROOST
526 Main St., Longmont
Lafayette Winner: The Post Chicken & Beer (also in Longmont)
Louisville Winner: The Huckleberry
Erie Winner: 24 Carrot Bistro Niwot Winner: Farow
When all the ballots were counted, there was no doubt which eatery our readers love best. Once again, The Roost was voted the Best Overall Restaurant in Boulder Weekly’s East County Best of Boulder awards for 2024. The Roost’s secret sauce is consistency with a menu of well-made favorites, a welcoming bar and hometown service, whether you’re there for post-work drinks, date night or a family dinner.
The Longmont destination also took home top honors for its desserts, apps and service. The Roost owners Sean and Rebecca Gafner operate other award-winners including Jefes Tacos and Tequila, Swaylo’s Tiki Restaurant and 99 Saloon.
Other outstanding East Boulder County dining experiences range from the farm-to-table coziness of 24 Carrot Bistro and Farow to the hometown comforts of The Post and The Huckleberry.
AMERICAN THE ROOST
526 Main St., Longmont
Erie Winner: 24 Carrot Bistro
Lafayette Winner: The Post Chicken & Beer
Louisville Winner: The Waterloo
Niwot Winner: Farow
Lyons Winner: Oskar Blues Grill & Brew
When it comes to the wide and tasty scope of immigrant-influenced American cuisine, The Roost won our readers’ votes for everything from corn cobb salad and fried chicken to bourbon burgers and a brownie sundae.
At The Post, the flavors of these United States get showcased in crispy gluten-free fried chicken, hatch green chile mac-and-cheese and chocolate s’mores pudding jars.
Erie’s 24 Carrot Bistro and Niwot’s Farow each showcase elevated, ingredient-focused seasonal New American
preparations paired with American and international wines.
APPETIZERS / TAPAS THE ROOST
526 Main St., Longmont
Louisville Winner: /pôr/ wine house
Erie Winner: 24 Carrot Bistro
Frankly, we often skip the entrees and make a meal of our favorite starters and small plates. The Roost’s roster of appetizers includes tots smothered in goat cheese and mushrooms, polenta bites, crisply fried cauliflower, chicken wings and lettuce wraps.
At /pôr/ wine house in Louisville, top tapas treats — bacon-wrapped dates, blistered shishitos, dolmas and meatballs — are made to be savored with reds, whites, rose and bubbly.

Moxie mills its own organic, heirloom grains and uses slow fermentation to produce prized crusty artisan loaves and a platter of buttery pastries including the celebrated sugary kouign-amann (QUEEN-ah-mahn).
Croissant geeks have recently discovered the buttery-good French pastries at Jeannot’s Patisserie & Bistro in Lafayette, while BW readers have sung the praises of Babette’s before.
BARBECUE GEORGIA BOYS BBQ
250 3rd Ave., Longmont
Louisville Winner: LuLu’s BBQ
Lyons Winner: Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ & Brew (also in Longmont)
Superior Winner: Wayne’s Smoke Shack
Westminster Winner: GQue BBQ
As legendary American foodie James Beard once proclaimed: “Barbecuing is an art, not just a matter of building a pyre and throwing on a piece of meat as a sacrifice.”
From smoke to sauces to sides, Georgia Boys has always taken barbecue seriously. This Longmont landmark perennially earns our readers’ votes for its craveable ribs, pulled pork, chicken thighs, hot links and sliced brisket. They love the mac-ncheese bowls, huge sandwiches and irresistible craveable Tennessee Sticky Pig — juicy, chewy, smoked pork belly cubes in maple bourbon glaze.
Louisville’s LuLu’s BBQ deserves a shoutout for its white oak-smoked BBQ tofu. Lovers of true Texas barbecue are thrilled that Wayne’s Smoke Shack in Superior has been reborn following the Marshall Fire. GQue BBQ is so good, our readers couldn’t stop themselves from voting for it, despite being well outside Boulder County. We can attest: It’s worth the drive.
When it comes to brunch, our voters still love to linger over platters of shrimp and grits and poached eggs served with red beans or hollandaise at Lucile’s Creole Cafe. The Boulderborn restaurant group perennially takes home top a.m. honors in the East County Best of Boulder Awards. Must-taste menu crushes are spicy sausage gravy over house-baked biscuits, creamy crawfish etouffee and for the finale: warm, sugary beignets nibbled with a cup of chicory coffee.
BURGER
99 BAR SALOON
449 Main St., Longmont
Louisville Winner: The Waterloo Erie Winner: 24 Carrot Bistro
99 Bar Saloon took home top burger honors for the first time in 2024. Credit the win to what’s between the buns: freshly ground, Longmont-raised, grass-fed beef – not frozen meat pucks. 99 Bar Saloon’s extensive toppings include grilled onions, beef chili and bacon-pepper jam. The Longmont marries pepperjack cheese with roasted green chiles, lettuce, tomato and house-made “burg” sauce. Grilled or fried chicken breast can be substituted. Another perennial burger favorite is Louisville’s Waterloo, serving beef, grilled chicken, a Beyond Burger or a bison patty with an array of extras. Their Weekend Brunch Burger is jammed with a patty, hash browns, bacon, fried egg and American cheese.

Two Jefes favorites are the Mariscos — stuffed with grilled snapper and shrimp — and the chile relleno middled with a crispy cheese-filled relleno
served with cheese, rice and beans. Jefes also offers any burrito as a salad bowl and ups the ante with its chimistyle deep-fried burrito topped with guacamole and pico de gallo.

Lafayette’s tiny Nok’s Donuts deserves a shoutout as one of the only local artisan shops making its doughnuts, fillings and icings strictly from scratch, not from a mix. A recent Yelp survey revealed that Nok’s is the most highly reviewed doughnut shop in Colorado.

The Heather layers fried chicken with ham, cheese, and plum jam.
Lines form early for dinner at Bee’s Thai Kitchen, Erie’s own hometown food truck. Bee Rungtawan Kisich prepares dishes she learned growing up in northern Thailand, including warming pumpkin curry, noodles, salads, samosas and sweet sticky rice.
From a single beloved scoop shop in Louisville, Sweet Cow has become the metro area’s first name in local ice cream. We love Sweet Cow’s smallbatch approach to churning out innovative flavors made using great ingredients. Don’t miss all-time favorites

KID FRIENDLY
LONGS PEAK PUB & TAPHOUSE
600 Longs Peak Ave., Longmont
Louisville Winner: The Huckleberry
Lafayette Winner: eats & sweets
Superior and Broomfield Winners: Noodles & Company
When East Boulder County parents look for a kid-friendly eatery, what they
Food BEST OF BOULDER - EAST COUNTY
really want is a place where they can relax, too. Longs Peak Pub & Taphouse — like all the Mountain Sun locations — welcomes diners of all ages and persuasions. The boisterous brewpub atmosphere means that kids don’t have to be shushed. The servers know to bring pizza, grilled cheese or chicken tenders asap to the antsy littles. Crayons and games are always available. All the eatery asks is that kids don’t race around when servers are carrying armloads of craft ales to the elders.
Oskar Blues has evolved from a single brewpub/eatery in 1997 to an acclaimed craft brewery producing classics like Dale’s Pale Ale. While the brewery was acquired by a national company, local locations are still operated by the founders. Voters revere the original Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons as an eatery, brewery and famous music venue, as well as a vital
community center. The menu retains Oskar’s famous burgers (served with garlic mashers) and many Louisianaaccented favorites like jambalaya, shrimp and crawfish etouffee, and bread pudding with whiskey caramel sauce.
MEXICAN RESTAURANT TEOCALLI COCINA
103 N. Public Road, Lafayette
460 Main St., Longmont
Longmont Winner: Jefes Tacos & Tequila
Louisville Winner: Old Santa Fe Niwot Winner: Raza Fresa
It’s not hard to find great Mexican restaurants in the L towns. Teocalli Cocina has gradually grabbed the attention of Boulder County diners with its upscale focus on Mexico’s diverse regional cooking styles. The eatery’s bud-blasting arsenal of salsas range from roasted tomatillo and X-ni-pek (with pineapple and habanero) to charred pasilla chile salsa. Appetizers include mango shrimp ceviche and pozole verde. The taco star here is the De Birria Tijuana Style: corn tortillas with short rib, avocado salsa and Oaxaca and Chihuahua cheeses plus
spicy consomme (like a French dip). First-timers tend to sigh over plates of seared adobo tuna and rich, dark chicken mole enchiladas. Teocalli’s classy finale is a bruleed banana split.
NEW RESTAURANT THE DEN ON ELEVENTH
1111 Francis St., Longmont
Lafayette Winner: Bucatino Trattoria Romana
Longmont Winner: Urban Field Pizza and Market
Dozens of new Boulder County eateries have debuted in the past year vying for diners’ attention. The Den on Eleventh won over our readers with its focus on coziness. From the seating and lighting to the service and the shareable bites, The Den is designed for getting together. Familiar appetizers include mussels and frites, grilled shrimp in garlic butter and French onion soup. Main dishes range from burgers and tacos to substantial platters of Buckner pork chops with tart cherry demi, butternut squash risotto or chicken marsala. For a meal-ending hug: Warm apple crumble a la mode.

Starters range from chicken wings to Irish “nachos” — chips topped with corned beef and cheddar. All-day entrees include everything from chicken pot pie to mac-ncheese with pulled pork and a big bowl of udon noodles with edamame. The blackened salmon sandwich comes
with a choice of freshly-fried chips, French fries or mashers.

Lafayette Winner:
Morning Glory Cafe
Louisville Winner: The Huckleberry Niwot Winner: Garden Gate Cafe
Our readers appreciate Tangerine’s chef-driven devotion to perfect scratchmade flapjacks. Tangerine’s fluffy buttermilk cakes can come topped with blueberry sauce, blueberries and lemony ricotta or with strawberries and salted caramel sauce. Whole grain — wheat, oat and corn — pancakes arrive with pear sauce, cinnamon butter and bananas. For a change of pace: Belgian waffles with organic maple syrup and puffy brioche French toast. On the savory side are tall waffles with fried chicken breast and cinnamon butter.
Rosalee’s Pizzeria is celebrating its 10th anniversary in business with a win for its East Coast Italian-American pizza slices. Far removed from those pre-warmed, limp, lukewarm dough triangles, Rosalee’s dishes crispy, cheesy, thin-crust Neapolitan slices as well as chewy squares topped with top-notch cheeses, meats and housemade sauces. Slices are available at lunch, and Sicilian pizza squares are served when the pizzeria features live music. Hearty breakfast pizza squares are on the Sunday brunch menu.
Louisville Winner: Lucky Pie Niwot Winner: Abo’s Pizza
It’s no surprise that Urban Field has won over the picky pizza fanatics of Boulder County despite serious competition. Dough nerd and chef Nick Swanson has won international pizza competitions with a perfect, slow-fermented crust used in round Neapolitan pies as well as Detroit-meets-Sicilian squares. Urban Field’s cacio e pepe square pizza topped with creme fraiche, fontina and gorgonzola cheeses boasts a moist middle and an addictively crispy crust with caramelized crunchy cheese edges.

Beyond the spectacular view and patio fun and games, guests can glimpse Stem Cider’s production facility. Fledgling couples can relax with a tasting flight of various sweet and dry ciders paired with Acreage’s menu of comfort food dishes. RESTAURANT SERVICE THE ROOST
526 Main St., Longmont
Lafayette Winner: The Post Chicken and Beer (also in Longmont)
The food served at The Roost is well-prepared, and the cocktails are spot-on, but one big reason our voters are regulars at this Longmont eatery is the way they are treated. Rather than a changing cast of severs, bussers and hosts, customers find familiar faces when they return to the restaurant. The service in the dining room and bar is attentive and friendly no matter the meal occasion.
For special occasions, Boulder Weekly readers also gave a winning nod to the contemporary, wine-savvy, fine dining service at Erie’s 24 Carrot Bistro and at Farow in Niwot.

Subs can be personalized with mayo, mustard, hot peppers, onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, herb seasoning and oil. Off-menu combo winners include the German Dog middled by a beef hot dog with bacon, melted Swiss, mustard, horseradish, sauerkraut and pickles. It’s made for Oktoberfest.

Lafayette Winner: Morning Glory Cafe
Louisville Winner: The Waterloo
The menu at Longs Peak Pub & Taphouse features great meaty dishes, but the Longmont destination has many fans for its meatless burger options that don’t sacrifice anything in the flavor department. Like its sister Mountain Sun Brewpub eateries, Longs Peak offers a grilled plant-based Impossible burger or a vegan black bean patty with the standard gar-
nishes on a griddled bun or glutenfree ciabatta roll. Burgers can be topped with cheeses from blue to Swiss, spread with pesto or crowned with roasted poblano chilies. The top combo is sautéed mushrooms and onions with melted Swiss cheese. The burgers are served with house-fried potato chips, but it’s always worth adding the eatery’s fresh-cut crunchy fries.
