ightning’s flashing, winds are howling — and there’s a tempest in the tea party! Why it’s Dick Armey, the blowhard, former Republican majority leader, corporate lobbyist, Koch brothers’ retainer and commanding general of the tea party army.

Dick’s always been stormy. In 2002, he had an unpleasant split with his fellow legislative hucksters, Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay, so he spun through Congress’ revolving door right into the

Then, in 2009, when angry tea partiers exploded onto the scene, Armey immediately rushed out to co-opt them, diverting their leaders away from the group’s initial fury at Wall Street into a mob frenzy over Obamacare and “big government.” This corporate front man and lifelong Washington insider essentially conscripted the helter-skelter bunch of outsiders into the Republican Party by providing Koch money, FreedomWorks political operatives — and even writing their “Tea Party Manifesto.” Slick!

But, now, Dick’s dander is up again,

and he’s splitting from FreedomWorks.

He resigned with a testy email prohibiting the organization “from using my name, image, or signature in any way.”

Like other ugly divorces, this one had its petty oddities. For example, Armey’s email insisted that FreedomWorks must “deliver the copy of my official congressional portrait to my home.”

In case you’re worried about what’ll happen to poor Dick — don’t. To move Armey out as the general of today’s badly depleted tea party army, FreedomWorks will pay him $400,000 a year ... for the next 20 years! Like I said, “slick.”

When things got chippy in Gaza last month, I figured Israel could use an extra tourist. So here I am.

The last time I was here was almost 21 years ago.

When I flew into Israel on the night of Jan. 14, 1991 — 48 hours before the start of the Gulf War — the country was tighter than an overwound watch.

The streets of Tel Aviv were largely empty, both of traffic and pedestrians.

The restaurants that were open all had TVs on and tuned to the news. The people who weren’t watching the news were mostly talking about it. And not loudly, which was out of character.

Most people had prepared a “sealed room” in their apartments by taping plastic over the windows and keeping a roll of duct tape at the ready to seal the door in case of a gas attack.

When I checked into my hotel I was issued a gas mask kit. The kit also contained an injection of atropine (the antidote for nerve gas but a poison itself ) that you were supposed to inject yourself with if you were exposed.

There was good reason for the concern. Saddam Hussein had threatened to retaliate against Israel if the U.S.led coalition that was preparing to toss him out of Kuwait (of which Israel was not a part) actually tried to do so.

He had previously threatened to use gas against Israel and had previously used nerve gas in the course of putting down a Kurdish revolt. He was both militarily and psychologically capable of carrying out the threat.

The hotel I checked into had prepared a sealed room on each floor. Two days later I used the one on mine. No gas, but I could hear the Scud ballistic missiles exploding around town over the howl of the air raid sirens as I taped the door.

That was then.

I’m back in Tel Aviv at the same hotel — renamed and modestly remodeled — and things couldn’t be more different.

No sealed rooms, no gas masks in sight, no preparations for the end of days, streets full of traffic and people, cafes and coffee shops doing a brisk business, and more talk about the impending national election (set for Jan. 22) than about “the security situation.”

This is a bit odd.

Three weeks ago, Hamas was launching rockets at Tel Aviv and sirens were going off in town, and a force of about 100,000 was poised to invade the Gaza Strip and help Hamas’ excitable boys reach paradise (or at least room temperature).

Last week the Western press was full of stories about Syria’s Bashir Assad (who is increasingly looking like a short-timer) loading up assorted ordnance with sarin nerve gas in preparation for some sort of last-ditch defense of his regime, or maybe in preparation for a going-out-of-business Gotterdammerung.

Somewhat inexplicably, the Israeli press has been downplaying the story.

The big news (for three or four days) was the U.N. vote granting the Palestinian Authority non-voting observer status, Israel’s riposte authorizing construction of additional housing in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and Western governments crabbing about the latter. By week’s end the press was more interested in who the various parties had picked as their candidates in the election than in Syrian poison gas.

So what’s going on here?

Here are a few guesses.

1. The U.N. vote and the West Bank housing.

A few months ago I suggested in this space that it has been known for at least 20 years (but rarely said aloud) that the Palestinians could unilaterally declare a state any time they wanted and Israel could unilaterally draw the boundaries of that state.

The U.N. and the West Bank housing announcement represent the Palestinians taking a step toward statehood and Israel taking a step toward border-drawing.

ell, it’s time for another meeting with Boulder County commissioners as they try to move ahead with rewriting the oil and gas regulations that govern our backyards.

As you may recall, the last meeting got a bit rowdy, as anti-fracking advocates disrupted the meeting with chants and heckling aimed at an Encana employee who came to present commissioners with the industry’s take on things. After the meeting, a few activists followed Encana spokesperson Wendy Wiedenbeck and another company employee as they left the meeting to walk a few blocks to their cars. The followers were pretty worked up and screamed really ugly things at the two women and by all accounts pretty much scared the crap out of them. It would have scared me as well. To say the least, it was not the night’s brightest moment for those who oppose fracking and it did do some damage to the cause.

You don’t have to look any further than the piece that Denver Post columnist Vincent Carroll wrote on Dec. 7 to see the fallout. The Post is owned by the same investors who pull the strings at the Daily Camera and Longmont Times-Call as well, so such opinions tend to get around now that the three have become one big paper.

Carroll was apparently so offended

by what occurred before, during and after the commissioners’ meeting that he referred to those attending the meeting who don’t like fracking as “The anti-fracking goons in Boulder.” In other words, he used derisive namecalling to make his point and punish those who he believed were guilty of using derisive name-calling to make their point. It gets better.

So why is it that the Post’s columnist decided that those who were outspoken that night in their opposition to fracking, albeit by organized disruption techniques devised to create greater political impact, should be lumped into the “goon” category instead of just calling out the three or four post-meeting hecklers who were out of line following the two Encana employees? The answer came later in his column.

Carroll writes, “The vanguard of the anti-fracking movement needs to look in the mirror. In their crusade to demonize fracking, they’ve become wildly self-righteous, as if they were battling a great and true evil instead of an ubiquitous extraction technique that may deserve additional regulation in populated areas but which has meanwhile been a boon to consumers and businesses alike.”

because, although they won’t admit it, they both gave up on it a long time ago.

Netanyahu probably figures that there is no point talking peace with Abbas, because Abbas doesn’t have the clout to make a peace agreement stick, no matter how generous the terms. He can’t make the minimal concessions necessary to have a successful negotiated settlement — recognizing Israel as a Jewish state and renouncing a Palestinian right of return to Israel proper.

Worse, he can’t stop the “incitement,” which is Israeli shorthand for the Palestinian practice of wallowing in a poisonous mixture of anti-Semitism, glorification of Jihad and xenophobia, and marinating their kids in it, which all but guarantees than any peace agreement that might emerge would be stillborn. So Abbas finds reasons not to negotiate, and Netanyahu is relieved that he does.

Just guessing, but I suspect this process will before too long result in the emergence of a Palestinian state with an Israeli-drawn border without the two sides negotiating either. That will not result in peace, but it will result in the conflict being recast as a

border dispute, which may make it more manageable.

2. Why Netanyahu was so quick to end the war with Hamas.

Just guessing again – I think it’s because he wants Hamas to survive for now — for two reasons, which are contradictory.

Reason one: As long as Hamas is around, he is under no real pressure to negotiate a settlement with Abbas (as opposed to letting a Palestinian state and its border emerge from mutual unilateral actions). What’s the point of settling with Abbas if Hamas instantly rejects the settlement and continues the conflict? As long as Hamas doesn’t turn Gaza into a forward Iranian missile base that threatens Israeli’s major population centers and airbases (not in that order), I’m guessing Netanyahu can live with it. Lenin used to talk about “useful idiots.” Netanyahu may have decided Hamas is Israel’s useful assholes.

Reason two: Hamas probably has more legitimacy among Palestinians than Abbas does. It probably would be more able to make a peace agreement stick than Abbas ever could, if it chose to enter into one. Just guessing, but

Netanyahu may think that Hamas may ultimately be a more promising peace partner than Abbas. Hamas is adamant that it will be a cold day in hell before it makes peace with Israel, but then stranger things have happened — including the Oslo Accords, which were considered impossible until they were announced. And Nixon, of all people, went to China…

3. Why Israel is seemingly so relaxed about Assad’s poison gas.

To be sure, Assad poses a danger to Israel, but I’m guessing it’s not a very big one. Unlike Iran’s Ahmadinejad, who is into Islamic end of days theology, Assad is a secularist. He may be fatalistic about his personal chances of surviving Syria’s civil war, but I’m guessing he is not into gratuitously committing national suicide, which is what a gas attack on Israel would be tantamount to.

My guess is that Assad is hauling his nerve gas up to the Alawite regions of Syria to deter the soon-to-be victorious Sunni revolutionaries from massacring his sect. In other words, the move may be more desperately defensive than desperately offensive.

I’m also guessing that Israel’s real

concern is not that Assad wants to launch a gas attack on it, but that his gas might fall into Hezbollah’s or al Qaida’s hands — and those concerns may be taken quantum leaps upward.

Over last weekend, there were reports that Syrian rebels overran a “chloride factory” at al Safira east of Aleppo, which appears to have been the cover for a major chemical weapons and ballistic missile depot. On Dec. 10, an Israeli website, debka.com, reported that the rebels were from the al Nusra front, which is affiliated with al Qaida.

The website also said the rebels were pushed out of the factory, but that they had overrun a big government base at Sheikh Suleman to the east of al Safira, effectively cutting off the chemical weapons depot. There were also reports over the weekend (in the London Times) that Israeli Special Forces were operating on the ground in Syria to neutralize chemical weapons.

Just guessing here, but it wouldn’t be surprising if these events were related.

simply because it would cost the industry more money to be environmentally responsible. The tons of air pollutants that pour out from the industry’s tens of thousands of production platforms every year would never be allowed under the Clean Air Act if the oil and gas lobby — presumably working very courteously without raising its voice — hadn’t spread around enough cash to keep the platforms exempted. Closer to home, Colorado is finally going to create a groundwater testing system supposedly designed to make sure the oil and gas companies don’t contaminate our water. The Boulder goons should be happy about that, right? But wait, the ever-polite discourse between the industry and Colorado regulators appears to be getting an exemption for most of the Wattenberg Field that happens to cover Weld and Boulder counties and coincidentally has the biggest problems with spills and groundwater contamination in the state. I could go on and on.

The commissioners, politicians and, sadly, far too many journalists are acting like the playing field is actually level when it comes to energy extraction regulations. They want those who oppose fracking and other destructive, healththreatening oil industry practices to just

politely state their concerns into the microphone and then sit down and shut up and let the drilling commence. But it isn’t going to happen, because the playing field isn’t level.

Democracy is sometimes messy and loud and uncomfortable, particularly when those with the power and money are aligned in their opposition to those with nothing more than a voice and a single vote to defend themselves against people who would profit at their expense. Citizens have been doing it the polite way for decades, and all that it has gotten them is one environmental exemption for the oil and gas industry after another, exemptions that can destroy the quality of life of families and entire communities.

There are, of course, some counties that say they want the drilling, but look at them more closely. They tend to be the same counties that are so poor and cash-strapped that they also want meat packing plants, private prisons and nuclear waste dumps so people can work and schools can have a tax base. Such counties are often exploited by dirty industries such as oil and gas.

Boulder’s opposition to fracking is not a NIMBY issue. Those who oppose this practice oppose it everywhere, in

Boulder and Weld counties, in Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, California, Wyoming and anywhere else where the ill-gotten exemptions to the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts have created the potential for environmental and public health calamities.

Who are the real goons, Mr. Carroll? Are they those who are organizing to make their voices heard in an effort to protect their families and communities, or those who bribe their way to massive, never-before-heard-of profits by sidestepping the environmental laws?

Yelling at a PR flack from Encana is pointless and wrong. Getting personal, vulgar and overly aggressive with our county commissioners and other elected leaders is counterproductive and likewise wrongheaded.

These local politicians are trying, and they have a heck of a balancing act to pull off. We must appreciate their efforts if not their tactics and decisions.

But getting loud and being heard does not make anyone a goon. It is democracy in action, and it is often the only tool citizens have to combat the power of rich corporations that can politely and courteously buy all the influence they need to get what they they want, no matter the cost to the rest of us.

the Chamber of Commerce couldn’t have said it better. According to Carroll, the problem with those who oppose fracking is that they have the gall to act as if they are fighting against a “true and great evil” instead of the truth, which is that they are just Boulder jerks standing in the way of “a boon to consumers and businesses alike.” I guess Boulder County is just full of a bunch of goons who are too ignorant and self-righteous to understand that rainbows, bunnies and fracking all make the world a better place.

Can’t we all just get along?

Only if you want to get steamrolled by the real goons, the politically powerful oil and gas companies who have bought their way past many of the regulatory safeguards designed to protect our health and the environment.

Mr. Carroll, and apparently our commissioners, want everyone to play nice and be respectful and polite. Which would be a great thing to do if the playing field were actually a level one.

But it isn’t.

Working politely behind the scenes, oil and gas money was able to get benzene and dozens if not hundreds of other carcinogenic chemicals used in the fracking process exempted from the Clean Water Act. Because it’s safe? Of course not. It was exempted 8 December 13, 2012

BENSON’S GONE TO POT So Amendment 64 passes, and all of a sudden Republican CU President Bruce Benson gets up on his high horse when it comes to the morality of marijuana.

This from a man who, according to The New York Times, was arrested twice for drunk driving in the early 1980s and reportedly threatened his former wife.

So good for Rep. Jared Polis for calling Benson out on his claim that CU is going to lose a bunch of federal money due to the legalization of small amounts of marijuana for personal use.

We especially liked the part in Benson’s Dec. 8 message to alumni whining about the pot measure when he rips publications like Playboy and the Princeton Review for giving CU such high party school rankings over the past decade. He says the publications “use research methodology that would earn them an ‘F’ in any CU class.”

With all due respect, we don’t think good ol’ boy Bruce knows the word “methodology.” One of his PR hacks probably wrote this attempt at eloquent speech.

Unlike university presidents of yesteryear, who were actual academics who held Ph.D.s, Benson is an oilman who has a mere B.A. in geology, and his mishaps during his CU interview process include referring to people with disabilities as “handicaps” not once, but twice, according to The Denver Post.

So it’s hard to swallow when a guy of this caliber attempts to wax eloquent about the evils of weed and the financial harms it might bring. As Polis said when he rightly ripped Benson for fear-mongering, the legality of marijuana will not affect CU any more than the legality of alcohol.

Have a stiff drink, Bruce. Or even better, a puff. And chill out.

ANOTHER CARR WRECK Speaking of puritan stiffs who get their panties in a wad when it comes to marijuana, we weren’t exactly surprised to see Boulder City Attorney Tom Carr opposing the idea of retail pot shops in town proper — emphasis on proper.

Carr was basically lobbying for a ban against marijuana stores at a city council meeting on Dec. 4, and luckily he was suppressed, for now. Amendment 64, passed by Colorado voters in the Nov. 6 election, allows municipalities to exempt themselves from the legalization measure.

Carr’s reputation preceded him when he was hired, as evidenced by a Boulder Weekly story the month he started on the job.

He became notorious in his previous job as Seattle city attorney not just for going too far when it came to stifling constitutional free speech rights, but for battling bars and night life. A former city council member there called Carr’s behavior on a marijuana enforcement panel “shocking,” “inappropriate” and “very rude.”

Our city attorney obviously has an agenda, an ax to grind. We’re not saying he doesn’t have the right to his pious values, which likely came from his attending Catholic schools from grade school through college.

We’re just wondering whether Carr is a good fit for a community like Boulder and its progressive values.

I speak out on this issue because I have heard many stories of people who were so demoralized by trying to fight for their health and safety in the face of hydraulic fracturing that they stopped fighting. I am motivated by the stories of the people in Erie who were sold out by their city council and now sit in constant vigil of the impact fracking has and continues to have on their community. The City of Longmont went through the democratic process to ban fracking in their town and now face litigation from the oil and gas companies with support from Hickenlooper and the state. That is bullying and intimidation, not what we did at the Boulder County commissioners meeting.

I refuse to sit back and be polite when I think about the future my children will inherit if I don’t do something. It is like watching a bulldozer poised to raze my home with my children inside. So yes, I feel a sense of urgency and responsibility to step up and speak outside of an allotted threeminute time frame that will be largely ignored anyway. It will continue to happen until the issue of hydraulic fracturing can be dealt with in a truly democratic fashion that is decided by a vote of the people rather than concessions made out of fear of litigation.

The fossil corps want to frack ‘em all, creating millions of ways for fracking poisons to get into our groundwater — and the ever-shrinking Ogallala Aquifer, which is keeping the heartland from becoming a dust bowl again during the current drought.

After Occupy Boulder relinquished control of the Dec. 4 county commissioners meeting, Commissioner [Cindy] Domenico started off by lecturing us on being democratic. Democracy means “government by the people.” That’s exactly what Longmont’s ballot initiative banning fracking is. We don’t have ballot initiatives in Boulder County, the real, direct democracy which Occupy has as both goal and strategy. We employ the commissioners to represent us. It’s clear from the 60-40 victory in Longmont, the most conservative part of the county, that the vast majority of us want fracking banned.

Instead, the commissioners have hired expensive consultants to tell them that they can’t represent the people, that they must bow to the Colorado Oil and Gas Commission, but they can prettify the damage by re-arranging the deck chairs on this titanic fossil fool’s errand.

The commissioners have held three lengthy hearings packed with minutia about the rearrangement, apparently hoping to exhaust and distract citizens.

Occupy short-circuited their performance piece for 30 minutes.

I suspect careerism on the part of the commissioners. They want to be “team players” so they can push their policy-purveying to new heights. So they “kiss up and shit down.” There’s no limit to their cravenness: They will sac-

rifice their own children. Scientists know that greenhouse gases being emitted now will keep the climate in catastrophic condition for 1,000 years, sealing the fate of 40 generations!

I

’ve been building things out of wood for a long time,” Chris Connor says when Boulder Weekly finally tracks him down. Connor, you see, is on a roll. A high-tech consultant who calls the Front Range home, he’s also a master craftsman.

And then there was Thanksgiving with family in Idaho to attend to. Not to mention he also needs time to ride his bike.

Connor is about to become a lot busier. The unique bikes he creates are wooden pieces of art, combining the functionality of two-wheeled travel with the building techniques of instrument making, creating a fusion of form and function that is, ultimately, all about fun.

Cruiser bikes are, by their very nature, the kind of adult toy that makes everyone smile. Functional, practical and easy to ride, the cruiser is the ideal leveler. From hardcore endurance mountain bike racers to the middleaged neighbor down the street, everyone can ride a cruiser.

“The bike is a hot rod cruiser,” Connor says of the unique wooden cycles he hand-manufactures in Colorado.

“They’re stylish and fast,” adds Brian Wilson, a bike shop veteran who has spent the last 15 years commuting 23 miles to work each day on a bike (unfortunately, he says, it’s not on a Connor bike).

The ride is, says Wilson, “a lot like skiing.”

“It is real smooth,” he says. “The wood absorbs every single vibration in the street, I’ve never felt anything like it

“I always wanted to build things out of wood,” says Connor, who admits to ending up in Colorado because he “chased a girl out to Boulder,” and who worked in high-tech marketing before deciding to pursue what he calls his true passion.

The opportunity didn’t come until 2006, when he moved to Massachusetts to assist his brother, Stephan, with a growing instrument manufacturing business.

“I convinced my wife to leave her job, sell the house, and we moved,” says Connor.

In Massachusetts, Stephan Connor was making high-end wood classical guitars, a business that he launched in 1994. With Chris’ experience in communications and business processes, the

company was able to streamline processes and overhaul communications, becoming more profitable and efficient.

But most importantly, Chris was able to work with wood.

Despite the burgeoning success of the guitar business, the Colorado lifestyle kept calling.

“After a couple of years of living back east, I knew I couldn’t stay there,” he says. Connor moved back to Colorado in 2008, looking to get sawdust up his sleeves.

“I was infected with the bug,” he says. “I knew that I could do consulting for high-tech companies in Colorado, but the real intent was to build, design and create with wood.”

Connor had already been building his own custom furniture, and his work with his brother had taught him that

wood could take on more intimate relationships.

“I enjoyed making furniture,” he recalls. “But I had been searching for the same level of interaction that I had enjoyed with instruments.

“The wood took on a second life,” he says and laughs. “You can only interact with a chair or table so much.”

An enthusiastic cyclist, Connor started thinking about making bikes.

“When I was in Boulder, I had been an avid mountain biker,” says Connor.

“About a year ago, I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to build a wooden bike?’ The idea flickered into my mind and passed on. Then I remembered it.”

The wooden bike idea was the kind of technical problem wrapped in artistry that appealed to Connor. He also liked that the solution to the problem had the potential to be one that allowed for an intimate relationship between the object and the user.

“Bikes have to be built to exacting standards, similar to guitars,” says Connor. “They are very precise, and there is also the same element of taking things out into the world with you. It’s not something that sits passively, you go and ride it around, and so the idea of building a bike intrigued me. And the idea also of building something that’s beautiful, with flowing lines. So it started making sense. You can make it strong, not everyone thinks that with wood you could build things that are very strong, but I knew I could make something beautiful and strong technically and precise, a culmination of all See BIKES Page 14

my interests.”

As Connor started to delve into the concept, he discovered that his skill set and interests — from cycling to woodworking to business acumen — were uniquely suited to solve the design problems and bring the concept to market.

“There are a lot of people who have done these things as novelty projects or design experiments, but only a handful of people are trying to do something for a market,” says Connor.

“There are examples of these things as art,” he adds. “But I want to reach a real-world audience.

“If you are going to call something a bike it has to be able to be ridden, has to be able to survive normal riding conditions, and be capable of being taken into the elements. It must function as a bike if you are going to call it a bike.”

There’s no doubt that when you look at a bike from Connor Cycles, it is meant to be ridden.

Using a combination of ash, Kevlar and epoxy, Connor steam-bends the wood, laminates the handlebars and creates a bicycle that is as tough as it is beautiful.

“I decided max strength is in [the rider’s] best interest,” says Connor. “I don’t think anyone is doing wood composite laminations to build bikes, and I was able to create incredibly strong assemblies. The wood flexes, but won’t come apart.”

Some people look at the handlebars, says Connor, “and they say, ‘That will turn into splinters in my hands.’ But I can drive my car on the handlebar. It supports the weight of the car. These assemblies can be incredibly strong, and to complement the strength, I tried to capitalize on the beauty of the wood, and make the curves flow together.”

The experiment, by anyone’s mea-

sure, has been a success. Connor’s bicycles are unlike anything you’ve ever seen. And they have a ride like no other.

“The ride is what you wind up with,” says Connor. “You get this incredible ride. It feels solid, it feels secure, but it is exceptionally smooth, unlike anything else. Every time I get on it and ride around with a big smile on my face, it is so smooth.”

“The intent is that it is someone’s second or third bike,” says Connor, who adds that a built-to-order frameset starts at $2,500, with ready-to-pedalout-the-door-and-down-the-street models starting at $3,200.

“A high-end cruiser bike is $500,” says Connor. “But this is a different animal. It is art and it is function, so the price tag reflects that.”

And, according to Wilson and Connor, people know you’re riding something special.

“You’ll get a lot of questions,” says Wilson. “The bike really turns heads.

The color of it is just a beautiful wooden color that you don’t see on a bike.”

“You get stares, comments, call outs,” adds Connor. “People see it and they know it is something special.”

Connor laughs. “They are not for someone who is shy. You will be noticed. The bikes are the red Ferrari that pulls up to the curb.”

he last time Ashley Weber turned her head to look to the side, it was to watch the drunk driver who had just wrecked the truck she was a passenger in walk away from the car. He’d said he was going to take her on the ride of her life, and refused to hand over the keys to the car, let her out at her house or even buckle his seatbelt.

She buckled it for him. But speeding down country roads near Wiggins ended in a rollover accident, and Weber says she knew, immediately, she had broken her neck. At 18 years old, Weber was already working full time in the emergency room at the hospital in Fort Morgan and studying to be a doctor, so she knew she shouldn’t be moved. She Ashley Weber says she pleaded with the driver to just leave her where she was. Instead, she says, he picked her up like a sack of potatoes. And when she asked him to call 911, he refused, and called her parents instead. She spent six months in the hospital recovering from surgeries to stabilize her neck, where one vertebra had exploded, two had broken and one fractured. Weber, who grew up riding and roping horses and once won a saddle in a barrel racing competition, would have to shift from her active lifestyle to a bedridden one.

Over the past decade, she’s had to relearn how to do everything as a quadriplegic with limited mobility in her arms and almost no use of her hands.

“I didn’t know it was wrong for me to turn in my medical [marijuana] expenses when they asked me to — because they tell you not to be fraudulent,” Weber says.

“We run a federally funded housing program that is paid for by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the federal regs have a very defined drug related criminal activity list that includes the marijuana issue,” says Michael Reis, executive director of the Longmont Housing Authority. “So our policy translates to denying assistance and terminating assistance for participants who commit drug-related criminal activity. That is where we are right now in our admin plan and the current direction from HUD. And I think as we go into the next year, we have to get some better direction from HUD on how we’re supposed to run this federal program in the state of Colorado.”

The Department of Housing and Urban Development, in response to medical marijuana laws passed in 15 states since 1996, did issue a memorandum in January 2011 saying that while it was still the federal policy not to permit the use of marijuana, medical or otherwise, whether local housing authorities decided to evict someone on the basis of marijuana use was at their discretion. Public housing authorities and owners of houses leased to housing voucher recipients, the memo says, “have the discretion to evict, or refrain from evicting, a current tenant who the PHA or owner determines is illegally using a controlled substance. … Thus, while PHAs and owners may elect to terminate occupancy based on illegal drug use, they are not required to evict current tenants for such use.”

“Marijuana is a controlled substance under the federal controlled substances act, and this is a federal program,” says Janice Rodriquez, division director for the Denver Office of Public Housing. Public housing authorities, like Longmont’s office, have to establish standards that allow them to terminate benefits to a household that demonstrates a pattern of illegal drug use that’s interfering with the health, safety or enjoyment of the property by other residents.

housing authority needs to have a policy that provides for what to do in those sorts of situations,” Rodriquez says.

Unfortunately for people like Weber, the Longmont Housing Authority settled on a zero-tolerance policy.

“We adopted a more stringent policy than probably other housing authorities,” Reis says, while acknowledging that it is likely time for the administrative policy on medical marijuana to be revisited.

Medical marijuana was approved in Colorado in November 2000 and began operating in June 2001. As of September, Boulder County had some 9,344 patients using the drug.

Any changes to the administrative plan will be subject to hearings and review by the Longmont Housing Authority board, a process Reis estimates will take about 90 days to complete.

Meanwhile, Weber has been asked to follow the protocol of the current system — to request a hearing to review her case — and it’s been suggested that she request a hearing delay until June, well after the new administrative policy has been crafted.

Boulder County staff are also currently researching and planning how to handle these intersections of state-run programs and federal drug-use laws, and expect that process to be completed

by April.

“In general, we do look to the federal guidelines because it’s a federal program, so all of our users sign a drug free lease addendum,” says Willa Williford, housing division director for Boulder County. That said, there hasn’t been a marijuana-related eviction in the past three years. Though medical marijuana helps with her pain, Weber says she is willing to give it up to avoid eviction.

“We’ve dealt with this sort of discrimination against medical marijuana patients for years,” says Brian Vicente, lawyer, executive director of Sensible Colorado and chair of the Denver Mayor’s Marijuana Policy Review Panel. “The important thing to know here is these local Section 8 offices have absolute discretion over whether they’re going to enforce that provision of the federal law or not. So it is totally within the control of that office over whether they’re going to boot someone out.”

Two constitutional amendments legalize marijuana, and now it’s up to the federal officials to be reasonable about enforcement, he says, and called Weber’s story “nothing short of tragic.”

At this point, Weber says she’s worried the hearing she has to file a request for by Dec. 19 won’t be delayed while those policies are revisited. The messag18 December 13, 2012

es she’s heard from the Longmont Housing Authority have changed in the days she’s been on the phone with them, she says, and she’s concerned they might not let her delay the hearing date. Should she lose the voucher, according to the current policies from the Longmont Housing Authority, she’ll be ineligible for a housing voucher for at least three years.

If the timing for the hearing doesn’t work out in her favor and Weber loses her housing voucher, it wouldn’t be the first time she’s just barely missed receiving assistance because of a date, a dollar amount or bureaucratic oversight. The accident that left her a quadriplegic, in need of surgeries and a six-month hospital stay, occurred the month before her father’s new job added insurance benefits that would have covered her medical expenses. Had she worked and paid into Social Security for just a few months longer, she’d qualify for full disability payments. And if she made $.25 less from her Social Security Disability payments, she could draw Social Security Insurance as well.

Although the drunk driver spent three years in jail and Weber was promised restitution, she’s never seen a dime.

She says the only time he apologized to her was when she appeared in court to testify at his parole hearing.

But Weber doesn’t seem to be letting any of it drag her down, and is keeping up on stem cell research that could one day help her. She even saved the umbilical cord blood when Collin was born.

Although she is looking to the future, she says she is beating herself up these days over how she dealt with her housing form.

Using medical marijuana edibles has let her reduce her daily dose of Oxycontin to handle the pain and spasms, while not leaving her feeling lethargic or mentally clouded, she says — which means she’s got more attention and energy for her son.

Having just enrolled Collin in preschool, she’s determined to learn how to drive so she can take him to school. She was also looking at taking some classes herself at Front Range Community College, starting a nonprofit for parents with disabilities and creating a book about parenting from a wheelchair.

Those projects are on hold until she sorts out where she’ll be living this time next year.

“I was finally getting in a position in my life where I can move forward,” she says. “Every time I try to go forward with something, I’m set back in some way, and I just want to go.”

Sticker shock nixes Republican’s recount effort

Republican candidate for state legislature requested a recount of Boulder County’s election results last week in an effort to give election integrity activists an opportunity to examine concerns about how the election was run.

But now Ellyn Hilliard, who ran unsuccessfully against Democrat Jonathan Singer for state representative from District 11, has withdrawn her request after being told by Boulder County Clerk and Recorder Hillary Hall’s office that the recount would cost her nearly $28,000. (Candidates requesting recounts must pay for them unless the recount is automatically triggered by margin of victory of 0.5 percent or less.)

That dollar figure is about twice as high as it should be, according to Andrew Cole of the secretary of state’s office. And Boulder County canvass board members, who would have to do the recount, estimated the pricetag of a four-day recount at $4,770.

But Deputy Clerk Molly Tayer told Boulder Weekly that the cost estimate is accurate, given the amount of overtime pay that would have had to be shelled out over three days to conduct the recount before the deadline.

Hilliard acknowledges that her motivation behind asking for ballots to be retallied is not to reverse the results (Singer won by a significant margin, more than 5,000 votes). She says she requested the recount after learning about claims of election irregularities from members of the canvass board.

“I submitted the recount request so that the canvass board could gain some transparency,” she told BW. A four-person majority on the canvass board, two Republicans and two American Constitution Party members, began meeting without Hall’s blessing in late September and have been at odds with the clerk about the extent of the board’s authority ever since.

In her Dec. 7 request to the secretary of state’s office for a recount, Hilliard cites the canvass board’s $4,770 cost estimate and notes that Douglas County paid $800 for a 21,000-ballot recount after the primary election last summer. Using that cost model in Boulder County, which had about 180,000 ballots, would generate a recount pricetag of about $7,200.

Cole says “was a little too high, to put it generously,” and represents “about twice as much as the historical average that counties have charged.” The secretary of state’s office asked Hall’s office to break down the costs further, but Hilliard decided to drop the request, realizing she could never raise even half that amount from her campaign supporters before the deadline. She suggests that there might be political motivation behind recent actions by the clerk, who is a Democrat.

“We really wanted to be able to tell potential candidates that everything’s great and above-board at the election office, it’s nonpartisan, that they’re going to help you out just as much as they’d help the Democratic candidate, but I’m not so sure that’s true,” Hilliard says. “I don’t understand, with their advantage, why they need to do it. I would think they would want to be as transparent and above-board and cooperative with all the other parties as possible.”

“I really think they were price-gouging,” says canvass board member Mary Eberle of the American Constitution Party. “You really have to be a multimillionaire to buy election integrity.”

Aspen-based election integrity activist Marilyn Marks of the Citizen Center describes it this way: “Obama and Pete Coors are going to be the only ones who could afford a recount.”

But Tayer defends the cost estimate, citing the 120 hours of overtime pay that would have been needed to do the recount before the Dec. 13 deadline.

When asked whether the high cost was intended to discourage Hilliard from pursuing the recount, Tayer replies, “No, this was our ability to communicate what we consider to be really accurate costs for what it would take to get it done within three days and not charge the taxpayers of Boulder for an optional recount. … If we had all the time in the world, and could sit down and task it across days, it would have been probably a little less.”

Regarding the canvass board’s low estimate, Tayer says she doesn’t know where their bid came from.

“I don’t know how much experience they have running an elections division,” she says, adding that she hopes there can now be some closure on a tumultuous local election season. “I think it’d be good for us to all close out this election, celebrate how well it went, and move on.”

ach year that the wind Production Tax Credit has been allowed to expire, the wind energy industry has seen major declines. This year, wind energy faces that possibility for a fourth time in the credit’s 20-year life span.

While proponents of the tax credit cite its effects on reducing carbon dioxide and creating jobs, those who would like to see the credit come to an end say that it is time for wind power to stand on its own and prove itself, rather than sucking money from an already overdrawn government bank account.

The tax credit was established as part of 1992’s Energy Policy Act, which updated a 1978 Investment Tax Credit that made awards based on investments in operating wind facilities, rather than on the kilowatt hours of power produced by those facilities.

The credit was allowed to expire on schedule in 1999, having shown little effect on the wind and biomass industries. Just a few months later, the Production Tax Credit was retroactively extended through 2001, a year that saw a record-setting 1,700 megawatts of wind power added nationwide.

In both 2001 and 2003, the tax credit was allowed to expire, only to be retroactively extended in an energy policy bill and an omnibus package on tax credits that addressed the economic downturn following 2001.

by Alyssa Hurst ly — by 93 percent in 2000, by 73 percent in 2002 and by 77 percent in 2004, according to the American Wind Energy Association. Since 2005, the annual wind capacity installed has grown, minus a brief lapse in 2010.

Now, it’s once again up for renewal, and the fear among those who support the renewal is that if the tax credit expires, 2013 will see the same kind of dramatic setback.

As it stands, existing wind ener-

gy projects receive a tax credit of approximately 2.2 cents for every kilowatt hour of energy that is produced, an increase adjusted for inflation from the 1.5 cent rate from 1992.

“With reductions in capital costs and increases in capacity factors, wind power technology has improved since the introduction of the [Investment Tax Credit] and [Production Tax Credit],” the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in a 2005 outlook

on the Production Tax Credit. “It is likely that the installations spurred by those incentives allowed the industry to ‘learn by doing’ and thus contributed to improvement of the technology.”

In 2011, 2.9 percent of America’s energy needs were met by wind power production, but a report from the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that with some aggressive increases in installation, by 2030, 20 percent of the nation’s energy will come from wind.

In Colorado, 9.2 percent of energy needs were met with wind power in 2011, making the state the sixthhighest producer of wind-generated energy, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

A 2010 alteration to Colorado’s Renewable Portfolio Standard requires that 30 percent of the state’s energy needs be met through renewable sources by 2020. The American Wind Energy Association reports that installed wind power displaces 3.5 million tons of carbon dioxide each year in Colorado alone.

Jeanne Bassett, senior associate at Environment Colorado, says that recent events like Hurricane Sandy are warnings of what’s to come should renewable forms of energy take a hit, like the impending expiration of the Production Tax Credit.

GREENPEACE CONTINUES TO DETOX RETAILERS

The presence of toxins in various clothing brands has met its opposition, and it is growing by the thousands. Greenpeace’s Detox campaign, launched in 2011, was created in an effort to get the fashion industry to eradicate toxins from its products by 2020.

Last month, the world’s largest fashion retailer, Zara, as well as its parent company Inditex, became the eighth brand to commit to the elimination of hazardous chemicals in its supply chains and products since the Detox campaign began.

Shortly after the Detox campaign launched its report, “Toxic Threads: The Big Fashion Stitch-Up,” on Nov. 20, the campaign has gained more than 315,000 supporters committed to demanding toxic-free fashion from retailers around the world.

In October, Vestas Wind Systems laid off approximately 500 workers at four Colorado plants. The company attributed the decision to reduce its manufacturing workforce by 18 percent to uncertainty about the extension of the Production Tax Credit. Its workforce, including jobs in manufacturing, sales, service and research and development across the U.S. and Canada, was cut by about 20 percent because turbine orders for 2013 were down, despite the fact that 2012 was the company’s busiest year, Vestas said in a press release.

Between 4,000 and 5,000 people in Colorado were employed in 2011 directly or indirectly by the wind power industry — information that is among the stats cited by wind energy advocates to argue for another exten-

sion for the Production Tax Credit.

“I’m very sympathetic to the argument that this creates jobs,” says U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado Springs), who opposes the extension.

“A job is wonderful thing. However, if a job is dependent on a government subsidy and goes away when the subsidy goes away, then that doesn’t strike me as a very reliable job.”

Lamborn is the only Colorado congressperson who doesn’t favor a renewal of the tax credit.

“Renewable energy in and of itself can be a very positive thing,” he says.

“What I’m concerned about is our growing national debt.”

“I would love to see wind energy become commercially viable,” he says.

“When you prop up something, you might be delaying the day that it becomes self-sufficient. I say, let’s put it on a level playing field and it will either come through or it will prove not commercially viable.”

Though those in favor of the extension agree that wind energy needs to become viable, they say that the subsidy is necessary to level the playing field with fossil fuels. Independent oil producers can deduct 70 percent of the costs of drilling and developing an oil and gas well or mine the first year, and the additional 30 percent over the

following five years, as well as 15 percent of their gross revenue on their first 1,000 barrels a day as percentage depletion.

“If you look back at the money spent to build up the fossil fuel industry, it’s just as much, and they are still receiving subsidies,” Bassett says.

According to a research paper put out by DBL Investors, a venture capital firm created from the Bay Area Equity Fund from JP Morgan, the fossil fuel industry received an estimated $447 billion in government subsidies over the 90-year period between 1919 and 2009. That’s about $29.8 billion every 15 years.

In the 15 years between 1994 and 2009, the renewable energy industry received an estimated $6 billion in subsidies.

In

a small African village off the coast of Senegal, where medical care and supplies are scarce and disease and infection abundant, death is an all-too-familiar event.

Unless you happen to be an American seventh grader who traveled there with your mother, a midwife.

“The one day I go to the clinic with my mom, I was just visiting her and there was a baby that came into

the clinic and it was really, really pale, and it had an infection in its lungs and my mom had to do CPR on it, but eventually, after about a half hour … the baby died. It was really sad,” says seventh grader Alessandro Lauria. “I was standing right there. She was only 3 days old.”

What he learned started before they even left home, when he decided he wanted to do something to help the people in Africa, and settled on the project of distributing mosquito nets treated with insecticide as part of the Malaria Defense Project: Nets in Action.

“I realized by the time he was 3 that he was becoming more aware of the world around him,” Lauria says of her son. “I didn’t want him growing up thinking how we live in the U.S. was all there is to the world. So when he was 4, we moved to Ghana for a year, where I volunteered on a maternal/ infant health project. … I want him to know the world, see the world and how it is, not how it is portrayed in movies or even books.”

While in Ghana, Alessandro contracted malaria, and he describes having horrible headaches and hallucinations. Lauria says she and Alessandro slept under mosquito nets and used a mosquito spray if they were out at night, but those preventive steps are not 100 percent effective. She decided against using medication to avoid the two of them being on antibiotics for that long.

Malaria is responsible for the deaths of more than 655,000 people worldwide each year, with 91 percent of those cases occurring in Africa. The sickness is transmitted by a type of female mosquito called Anapheles, which is most active between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One of the most effective

methods to protect against mosquitos during these hours is by placing mosquito nets treated with insecticide above and around a bed.

Since he experienced the effects of malaria himself, and had seen others who were just as miserable as he was, Alessandro says, he was motivated to “make as big a difference as possible” in preventing malaria in Mboro, a village of 10,000.

“I saw lots of people there with malaria, including a baby that had a seizure because of malaria. There was one baby I saw that had a temperature over 105,” Alessandro says.

Pregnant women and children under 5 are most affected by malaria and are the most vulnerable, according to the CDC, which is why Alessandro decided to distribute the nets to them first.

Alessandro and his mother took a seven-hour cab ride to Dakar to purchase as many mosquito nets as he could afford with the money raised for the trip — a total of 481 nets.

“The day after I got the nets, we loaded some of them onto a donkey cart and then took them to the clinic by the beach,” Alessandro says. “All the women in the town lined up for the nets and came up one by one, and I

handed out nets. I handed out about 150 nets in an hour’s time.”

By the end of the next day, Alessandro had handed out the rest of the nets, then was swarmed by pregnant women and women with young children who were still in need of a net.

“It was pretty hard. They didn’t look very happy,” Alessandro says. “A lot of them didn’t understand what I was trying to say, so there was just this mob of women encircling me, and I’m like ‘I’m sorry, I don’t have any more.’”

“It was difficult and I was disappointed, but it made me more determined to expand my project so that I can distribute even more nets next year,” Alessandro says.

With the net distribution completed, Alessandro had time to get to know the culture and the people of Mboro while his mother worked at the medical clinic.

be in Senegal. The school proved to be an especially challenging experience for Alessandro. Classes were taught partly in the native language, Wolof, and partly in French. Neither language was one Alessandro was very familiar with.

“There were some words [the teacher] wrote on the board that were really similar to English,” Alessandro says. “But a lot of the time, it was hard to understand the teacher. He would teach in French, but give directions and stuff in Wolof, so it was really hard being there for six hours and not understanding most of what the teacher was saying.”

Alessandro says he hopes to learn the Wolof language at some point, but is more likely to learn French to start with, and says there are some people in the village who speak French.

Alessandro’s mother is fluent in several languages, but she says none compare to the native Wolof language of Mboro.

“It’s a really difficult language to speak. I’ve traveled to a lot of places and that’s probably the most difficult language,” she says.

The language barrier wasn’t the most difficult part for Alessandro in the classroom, however. He was the only student of a different race in the classroom and quickly became the object of bullying.

“A lot of the kids at the school there were just like kind of mean and were singling me out and stuff,” Alessandro says. “It was kind of annoying. … They threw trash at me.”

Alessandro explains that the problem was that the teacher didn’t show up on time, leaving a room full of unsupervised students with nothing to do.

But after the first week in Mboro, school suddenly wasn’t the problem anymore.

During one of Alessandro’s frequent visits to the beach just outside of

the huts where he and his mother stayed, he stepped on a large piece of glass in the sand.

“When I stepped on it, I had to hop all the way up to the house, which is a long way to hop while a bunch of blood was pouring out of the cut, and when I got to the house I could see the tissue coming out of the cut,” he says.

“It was really gross.”

His mother immediately treated and stitched up Alessandro’s foot at their hut. The cut was severe enough that it prevented Alessandro from attending school for the rest of the time he was there.

Despite the challenges, he says, he has returned from his trip to Mboro with greater motivation to continue with his project.

“I want this project to be ongoing so that I can make it bigger and help more people,” Alessandro says. “I’m going to focus just on one village and just focus on them to help. … I was thinking about going to other schools for fundraising because my school’s really small and they raised $470. Since my school’s small, then bigger schools could raise more money so that I could get more nets.”

Alessandro also received a $1,000 grant from the Mountain Forum for Peace to help fund his project. Lauria says they will be looking into getting more grants as well.

“It’s really important to Alessandro that people know that every dime of their donation goes toward the nets,” Lauria says. “When Alessandro was born, I had hoped he would someday go out into the world and make a positive difference. I believe he already has.”

hat do you do when you finally make it? Most artists are perpetually scraping by and innovating just to get by, and when you finally break through that barrier and find yourself no longer a struggling artist but a successful one, where do you go from there?

Britt Daniel is one of those few artists. Now 41, Daniel started his band Spoon in his early 20s and then built the band into an indie rock juggernaut. Daniel has what all musicians strive for — a creative outlet that provides a living. together, that was cool and it was not something that I could have predicted.”

Touring with Divine Fits is a new experience for Daniel when you consider that Divine Fits only has 10 original songs and one cover recorded.

The lack of material makes for shorter sets, too, with Divine Fits playing 13 songs or so per concert versus 20 or more with Spoon. (With Spoon, the challenge is to “whittle” down 19 years of material into a 25-song set list, Daniel says.) The group has been covering a variety of songs by various artists, from the Rolling Stones to Tom Petty to Wipers. One cover stands out though, and that’s R&B singer Frank Ocean’s “Lost,” a seemingly odd choice for a minimalist rock band to cover.

“The first time I heard it, Dan played it for me and he said, ‘This sounds like an R&B singer doing a Spoon song,’” Daniel says. “So I kind of listened to that with that reference point. It did seem like something rhythmically, arrangement-wise and spacial-wise, that I would do. I didn’t really think about covering it though until much later, until someone suggested it to me.”

Perhaps the strangest thing about covering “Lost” (and the song absolutely does sound like an R&B version of a Spoon song) is that the song came out in 2012. In this era of strict copyrights you just don’t see many artists covering songs that came out in the past decade. It’s almost coming full circle from the early days of rock ’n’ roll, when artists would cover each other’s hits with impunity.

“I think any song that’s a great song is potentially a great cover,” Daniel Boulder Weekly

says. “In the ’60s they used to cover current songs a lot more often. That was a cool deal. I like the idea of musicians sharing a song, making something into their own, and the song sort of morphing. It happened a lot more often in the past.”

Speaking of the past, Daniel has a surprisingly sharp memory of past shows. Spoon hasn’t played the Boulder Theater since 2005 or 2006, but Daniel remembered eating at a Nepalese restaurant close to the venue (probably Himalayas, which moved to North Boulder) and a group of hardcore locals.

“For awhile there whenever we would play in Denver or Boulder, there were this group of youngsters that would come to all our shows,” Daniel recalls. “I don’t know, they were just funny people. You would look out in the audience and they would be there. I don’t know, they were Boulder’s approximation of New Wave-looking? They were cool, we ended up being friends with them.”

Whether the same group will follow Daniel from Spoon to Divine Fits remains to be seen. But Daniel is willing to take that chance, to walk away from the immense success of his past to strike out on a new venture. Most music fans are skeptical of groups like this — even if supergroups are extremely successful, they rarely stick together for long — but Daniel and Boeckner are adamant that the group is for real.

“The idea was to put together a band, not a record, so we’re going to keep on doing it,” Daniel says.

ired yet of “Frosty,” “White Christmas” and “Jingle Bells”?

Boulder’s classical musicians have the answer for you: whole concerts of Christmas music that avoid the inescapable standards currently flooding the airwaves and suburban malls. No sleigh rides, roasting chestnuts or reindeer shouting with glee. Just classical music written over the centuries for the celebration of Christmas.

In the case of the Ars Nova Singers (7:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 in St. John’s Episcopal Church), “written over the centuries” is literally true. “In 27 years of Ars Nova holiday concerts,” director Tom Morgan says, “we have revived many unusual works of the distant past and presented literally ‘Ars Nova’ (new art) as well: music of living composers.”

This year’s “Midwinter’s Collage” concert offers “the austere beauty of medieval music; the flowing polyphony of the high Renaissance; a set of particularly American works that trace the history of our country; modern works from British composers; and some familiar carols in new and unusual arrangements,” Morgan says.

The medieval portion of the program reaches all the way back to the 12th century with music by the mystical Benedictine abbess Hildegard of Bingen, a cult-like figure who has a wide following within the New Age movement for her natural healing, among feminist scholars as one of the earliest known creative women, and among music lovers who just like her soaring, chant-like melodies.

Coursing on through the centuries, Ars Nova will perform a double-chorus setting of the Christmas hymn “In dulci jubilo” (In sweet joy, a tune known to many as “Good Christian Men, Rejoice”) by the underappreciated Renaissance composer Michael Praetorius. Among the American works will be a suite of Appalachian carols, “Star in the East,” featuring hammered dulcimer, played by Denver’s “Dulcimer Lady,” Lucille Reilly.

Hildegard and Praetorius show up on the program of another local ensemble, the Boulder Renaissance Consort of instruments and voices (7 p.m. on Dec. 15 at St. Thomas Episcopal in Denver).

Gift of Music,” a holiday program featuring purely orchestral music. Together with flutist Cobus du Toit, the BCO will perform concertos by Bach, Handel and Vivaldi at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church.

“Handel always reminds me of Christmas, because I’ve played Messiah so many times,” the orchestra’s director,

Bahman Saless, says. “The concertos are going to be like a showcase of all of our talented string players. And I always think baroque music fits the season very well.”

Not to stray too far from the season, though, Saless and the orchestra will present a suite of carol arrangements by Leroy Anderson. Be assured, though, there are no reindeer or snowmen, or other hits from Hollywood. Instead, the suite includes the non-top-20 carols “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella” and the “Wassail song,” among others.

Saless and the BCO recognize that the holiday season does not end with the last concert before Christmas.

Instead, like the Colorado Symphony and many other orchestras around the country, they will present a New Year’s Eve concert of Viennese polkas and waltzes (6:30 p.m. in the Lakewood Cultural Center, Lakewood). The program will feature “The Emperor Waltz,” “Tritsch-tratsch Polka,” and similar musical bon-bons by Johann Strauss, Jr. “It’s a celebration of New Year’s Eve, Viennese style, with a twist,” Saless says. The twist is the inclusion of music from across central Europe, including a Czech overture, a Hungarian dance, and “all sorts of fun, crazy stuff,” Saless says.

There is more traditional holiday music aplenty as well. The Boulder Symphony (Dec. 14 and 15 at First Presbyterian) and the Longmont Symphony Orchestra (First United Methodist in Longmont) both partner with choirs to present annual holiday concerts.

And even if you’ve heard their carols dozens of times already, it is always rewarding to hear good music played live by good musicians.

Of course, many Coloradans are “dreaming of a White Christmas” this year — skiers and non-skiers alike. And they have their very own song: “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!” It should be easy enough to find if you are so inclined.

But whatever your preference for seasonal music, be it Hildegard, Handel or Hollywood, may your holidays be filled with music!

e’re not sure who observed once that “timing is everything,” probably someone somewhere whose timing sucked at exactly the wrong juncture, but Mike Dillon’s timing is pretty good. Not just because he’s a drummer/ percussionist/vibraphonist — with a resume that includes Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade, Dead Kenny G’s and Garage A Trois and side stints with Ani DiFranco — but because he’s also a dedicated snowboarder, and his latest tour takes him through Colorado preMike Dillon, far right, with his band members cisely on the heels of a handful of north Pacific storms that have thankfully cured the high country of a month’s worth of the dry ’n’ warms.

“Or when I’m playing with Claypool, he just wants me to solo until my arms fall off. With that big bass amp of his, he’s always going, ‘C’mon man, gimme more, gimme more,’ and I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m playing a fuckin’ marimba man! You’re killing me.’”

To a large extent, though, it’s the outside groups that give Dillon a perspective and appreciation for playing with, and mentoring, the younger members in his own group.

“That’s what is really cool about this band, though; watching the growth of these young players. Like Adam, our drummer, who went to Denver School of the Arts. He just came into this situation, and I’ve been watching his growth, playin’ every night. And that’s a part of the old jazz tradition, y’know?

Guys would do several sets a night, sometimes two or three gigs a night, and that’s why they all played the way they did.”

Dillon references another of his early heroes when he talks about younger players.

“People compare my music to Zappa all the time, but the most important thing about Zappa was that, yeah, he was quirky and had a lot of humor in his music, but he also demanded musical excellence from his players.”

Playing Zappa’s charts turned good musicians into great ones.

“Yeah, absolutely right,” he says.

or many people, a white Christmas is the be-all and end-all of holiday cheer. Going to bed on Christmas Eve with flakes filling the air and waking up on Christmas morning to a world softened by a blanket of new-fallen snow simply can’t be beat. But even with all the bits and bytes of the Interwebs at our disposal, there’s still no predicting the weather. USA TODAY claims there is a 90 percent chance Boulder will have one this year, while Stormfax.com gives us a 50-50 shot at best.

Returning to their roles as the Haynes sisters, Bodnar and Marilley dazzle. In particular, Marilley’s dancing skills and Bodnar’s combination of vocal prowess and comic timing are exquisite.

Denver Center Theatre Company veteran Hartman makes for the perfect grizzled General, and his end-of-show speech brought tears to the eyes of many audience members. As the General’s concierge and sharptongued, right-hand woman, Dorothy Stanley steals more than a few scenes as well.

As much as the actors accomplish, another star of White Christmas is the costuming by David Kay Mickelsen. Using the original designs by Carrie Robbins as a base, Mickelsen’s wardrobe choices are nothing short of sumptuous. Each musical number and scene change brings forth another set of periodperfect, gorgeous outfits. His costuming choices not only reinforce the 1950s setting but also further define each character and fill the stage with holiday cheer.

Judging from Boulder’s most recent meteorological history, the odds of a white Christmas this year seem iffy at best. That’s all the more reason to take in a performance of White Christmas. But even if you don’t celebrate Christmas and would rather be in Hawaii than anywhere with even a chance of flurries, this show will undoubtedly put you in the holiday spirit.

The black market meets the stock market ‘Killing Them Softly’ shorts a promising premise

K

illing Them Softly is an ambitious mashup of black market and stock market politics, wrapped in the guise of a straight-up crime movie. If that sounds like it’d be hard to pull off, it is. If you think it’s too much for one film, you’re right.

Killing Them Softly executes its premise clumsily, with neither the main plot nor the overarching allegory ever really getting going convincingly.

The movie tells the story of how two moronic junkies, Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn), conspire with the elder Johnny Amato (Vincent Curatola) to rip off a gangster poker game hosted by Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta).

Normally, pissing off a bunch of mobsters would be suicide, but Amato has an angle — see, Markie recently confessed to his poker buddies that he once had his own game robbed. If the game gets robbed again, everyone’s going to blame Markie.

So they rob the game, make some money, and everyone blames Markie.

But if there’s one thing stupid criminals need to learn, it’s that “loose lips sink ships.” One of the parties blabs about ripping off the game to an acquaintance who works for the wrong guy, and suddenly all three of them have contracts out on them. And the man hired to take care of them is Jackie (Brad Pitt), aided by Mickey ( James Gandolfini).

Director Andrew Dominik works in his allegory by setting the film right at the heart of the financial collapse sometime in pre-election 2008. We are treated to scenes of characters doing something mundane — like finding a park-

ing spot or walking through a train station — while a radio or TV plays a speech by then-Sen. Barack Obama or President George W. Bush. It’s through these speeches that the parallels between Wall Street and the mob are hammered home. The government had to restore confidence in the mortgage and financial markets in 2008, and the confidence issue is mainly psychological. The government took steps not just to fix systemic problems but to assuage troubled minds.

The mob economy works the same way, it seems. To restore confidence in the black market, as Pitt’s character says, someone’s “gotta go.”

As a crime tale, Killing Them Softly is just average. The mob elements just aren’t that fresh, and without the political undertones, the story just isn’t all that interesting. The one redeeming quality of the film is the acting. Pitt’s performance is absolutely riveting; the speech he gives at the end of the film is one of the most impactful scenes I’ve seen in recent memory. Gandolfini, though he has virtually no real role in the film beyond comic relief, nearly steals the few scenes he’s in. McNairy’s character is so pathetic you want to kill him yourself to silence his suffering.

The best way to describe Killing Them Softly might be as a political think piece wrapped in a mob story. This is not a bit of escapist fun. In the end, it’s a pretty good film that doesn’t quite execute its ambitions properly. It’s just not a game-changer.

t’s 3 a.m., studying isn’t going well, and your eyes are starting to feel heavy. If you could just find a nearby place to grab a snack, drink some latenight caffeine and focus, all would not be lost. Unfortunately, you live in Boulder and the pickings are incredibly slim.

For a college town full of night owls, procrastinating students and late workers, it is hard not to notice one glaring gap in the local food scene. There are just shy of zero 24-hour food hotspots in Boulder.

Places like the University Hill Market and Deli, Lolita’s Market, Yellow Deli — and, of course, Denny’s and IHOP — have found ways to make the 24-hour schedule work, but before your entrepreneurial gears start turning, other local restaurants like Boulder staple The Sink say that logistical issues are the reason that the city lacks this niche hangout.

Only one of Boulder’s three 24-hour spots truly offers that hangout atmosphere that draws in studying students and people looking for a cozy late-night spot. However, West Pearl Street’s Yellow Deli isn’t open quite 24 hours. It closes at 3 p.m. on Fridays and opens up again at noon on Sunday. Though the hours eliminate Yellow Deli as a late-night weekend gathering spot, one of the store’s managers, Matthew Sohn, says that the Yellow Deli offers a muchneeded experience for Boulder customers.

says. “We’re open 24 hours because the people need a place to go.”

According to Sohn, the Yellow Deli sees most of its business between about 8 p.m. and 1 a.m., but it sees an interesting mix of students studying and people looking for a place to relax well into the night.

“You really just can’t tell. It’s so unpredictable and diverse,” he says. “For us there’s a lot of times at night that we have waiting lists and nowhere else for people to sit.”

Though it would seem that students looking for a quiet study space away from noisy roommates would be the primary customer base, other 24-hour restaurants in Boulder say that this isn’t necessarily the case.

Ruba Wahdan of the University Hill Market and Deli says that while

college kids make up a good part of their late-night business, the market sees other types of people trickling in at all hours.

“We see a lot of people from the Fox all the way up until 5 or 6 in the morning. People are starving late at night, and we are the only place on the Hill they can go,” says Whadan.

The University Hill Market and Deli used to close around 4 a.m., but has changed its schedule within the last few years to accommodate all of the customers that would stop in right before or right after closing.

“We noticed people coming in after close and there wasn’t that big of a gap between close and open, so we just decided to stay open,” Whadan says.

“People who have to go to work early, like at 5 or 6, like having a place to stop

in before work and pick up cigarettes, coffee and a sandwich. We really are a one-stop shop, and that’s why we get so many people during those hours.”

At Lolita’s Market on Pearl, the working crowd is one that manager Lesley Perry says they cater to.

“People are getting off work at the mall and people [are] coming back from the bars,” she says.

According to Perry, the late hours of the night don’t tend to be the busiest, especially during the winter when people aren’t out and about, but she says that the people who do stop in are glad to have the option.

“Everybody is so happy that we’re the only ones open on days like Christmas,” Perry says. “We get people who don’t have family around, people who forgot to get eggs, people heading up to the mountains who need snacks.”

For the Alley Cat Coffee House, a popular 24-hour coffee and study spot in Fort Collins, being the go-to late night spot is a source of pride.

“We’re not open 24 hours because we make money. We don’t. We do it for the community. Our regulars really appreciate the fact that we are open all the time,” says manager Rick Newman.

Like the University Hill Market and Deli, the Alley Cat didn’t start out as a 24-hour operation, but management noticed a demand and met it, though they describe it as an act of fate.

hile verde, a.k.a. green chile, is a stew traditionally prepared with pork and peppers, and can be eaten on its own or as a sauce atop items like burritos or eggs. Unlike its red cousin, most versions rely on whole, roasted chiles, versus dried. The type of chile is what gives each preparation its distinct character and heat. The Big Jim variety, developed by New Mexico State University, is a mild to medium pepper, and a green chile staple. But relative newcomers like the Barker and Lumbre varieties up the spice ante, coming in with significantly higher Scoville heat ratings.

ne sip of chai too many, and colleague Carin plunged into a caffeine-fueled burst of manic energy where she was seemingly channeling the obsessive Carrie Matheson from Homeland (or as I like to call it, “My So-Called War on Terrorism”). She was bouncing off the office walls. “Get your coat,” I barked, doing my best Saul Berenson. I’m no doctor, but I believed that prescribing a lunch of ethnic comfort food would get my friend’s feet back on the ground.

Our destination was 3 Margaritas, a self-described family Mexican restaurant that’s part of a Colorado-centric chain. It’s located at the intersection of 28th and Iris in Boulder, in what used to be the Sol Azteca Mexican eatery.

3 Margaritas maintains much of the lively color scheme of Sol Azteca, augmented by efficient, low-key and welldressed servers — Carin felt their ties added a touch of class. The lunch menu here shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s ever set foot in a Mexican-American restaurant as there’s plenty of combo plates with various permutations of enchiladas, tacos and burritos.

As we perused the bill of fare, our fresh, crisp tortilla chips arrived with a bowl of thin tomato salsa with peppery accents. It didn’t particularly stand out as salsas go, but it seemed par for the

course for reasonably priced family Mexican — I didn’t expect much more.

Returning to the menu, I couldn’t help but reflect on the comforting familiarity of such offerings as carnitas and asada.

Then it struck me like a diamond bullet, that these combo lunches were the Latino equivalent of the Chinese-American midday special.

Swap out chips and salsa for egg rolls, rice and beans for fried rice, and pollo asado for sesame chicken, and conceptually, you’ve got the same meal! Now you all have an idea of how unexciting my life can be.

Carin inquired about a fair number of gluten-free choices and the staff was more than willing to accommodate special requests. In the end, though, she decided to throw caution to the wind and order up the non-gluten-free $8.75 chicken mole. Adhering to the classic

presentation template, it came with refried beans rendered silky by fat and winningly textured rice. While the complex, earthy sauce, with its tones of cinnamon and chocolate, was sweeter than usual, Carin was still content with this complement to tender, bite-size slices of chicken.

Likewise, my $8.45 plate of chile verde came sided with the workhorse beans and rice. While the spicing wasn’t mouth-searingly hot, the green chile’s subtle fruit flavor nicely stood up to the hefty chunks of pork. It was also a fine foil to the piping-hot stack of corn tortillas that accompanied the meal.

By meal’s end, in no small part due to the restorative properties of chicken mole, Carin had returned to a semblance of her normal self, much less frenetic and much less Claire Danesesque. While 3 Margaritas didn’t stake any new claims regarding Mexican fare, what we had, like a plate of sesame chicken, was predictable, reliable and reasonably priced. And sometimes there’s no better simple lunch prescription than that.

So we are left with a bit of a head scratcher. With such a notable void in the Boulder cuisine scene, it’s difficult not to wonder why so few have swooped in to fill it.

According to Mark Heinritz, coowner of local institution The Sink, the restaurant hasn’t seen a demand for it.

“We used to have a sizeable menu through close, but now we’ve just got some easy late-night options for quick snacks,” he says. “The market isn’t that big for it.”

Aside from that, Heinritz says that from a logistical standpoint, there are difficulties.

“From a business economics point

of view, it’s pretty expensive to pay utilities to be open that late and to staff it.

You basically have to bring in something like $200 to $300 at night, and that’s a lot of coffee,” he says.

For the Alley Cat, staffing is less of an issue than figuring out times to take care of the business aspects of owning a coffee house or restaurant.

“We have someone here anyway because they have to clean, so we train them to be baristas,” he says about staffing. “But when you never shut down there’s some maintenance things you have to deal with that would usually happen [while] you’re shut down.”
