Questioning circumcision (Re: “The truth about genitals,” Sophisticated Sex, Nov. 18.) Regarding Dr. Jenni Skyler’s response to “Concerned Mom-To-Be’s” questions about circumcision, it is great that the Boulder Weekly is addressing this issue, and brava to the mom who wrote in for educating herself. More and more expectant parents are coming to question this archaic practice and making sure to research circumcision during pregnancy. It is no longer acceptable to circumcise a boy just because the father was, when there is so much information available to show that circumcision is not only unnecessary but is, in fact, harmful, and that the foreskin is not merely an expendable nuisance, but a normal, healthy, functional and valuable body part. Parents need good information to counter the myths that abound.

Unfortunately, Dr. Skyler’s response tended to perpetuate rather than dispel the myths. For example, it is a myth that circumcision makes it easier to clean the penis (aside from the fact that removing any body part would make it easier to clean!). The intact penis is in fact super-easy to keep clean. In a young boy, the foreskin is actually fused to the head of the penis (it’s designed that way to protect the penis during the diaper years), so all you do with a child is wash off the outside. Later, once the foreskin separates and becomes retractable, all that’s

needed is for the boy to rinse underneath with his regular bath: easy to teach, easy to do, no big deal. Parents who circumcise for “hygienic reasons” may be unpleasantly surprised to discover that circumcision can in fact make the penis harder to take care of,

First comes the crime perpetrator, Martin Erzinger. A wellheeled wealth manager in Morgan Stanley Smith Barney’s Denver office, Erzinger handles more than a billion dollars in private assets and describes himself as “dedicated to ultra high net worth individuals.”

Now, Dr. Steven Milo comes onstage, and the drama quickly turns to tragedy. Milo, a surgeon and father of two, was bicycling in Colorado last July when — Wham! — he was struck from behind by Erzinger.

Instead of stopping to render aid, the money man sped away in his Mercedes Benz. But his car was damaged by the crash, so he finally had to pull over and call the Mercedes service center to have it towed.

But he didn’t ask for an ambulance to check on the poor guy he’d just run over.

Why? Because Erzinger is rich!

Noting that this money handler could lose his prestigious Morgan Stanley position, the compassionate DA said, “Felony convictions have some pretty serious job implications for someone in Mr. Erzinger’s profession, and that entered into [my decision].”

Wow, what a humanitarian! I’m guessing that a felony conviction would also have pretty serious job implications for any low-wage working stiff who nearly killed someone — though I doubt the DA would give a damn in that case.

This is thanks to the foreskin’s exquisite fine-touch sensory capacities and the mechanical advantages of the penis having a mobile skin sheath, instead of the taut, static covering of the circumcised penis. Furthermore, before and after surveys of men circumcised as adults are not a valid indicator of the sexual harms of circumcision, due to selection bias (i.e. men who get circumcised as adults do so voluntarily and therefore are already predisposed to being satisfied with the results).

Dr. Skyler, however, did hit the nail squarely on the head with her final advice to let the boy decide for himself.

It turns out that the vast majority of intact men are very happy with their foreskins and would never willingly part with them. Since there is no medical indication for the procedure in babies, the most ethical position is to respect the basic human rights to bodily integrity and self-determination, and leave children’s genitals the heck alone.

We would never tolerate non-consenting genital cutting in adults or girls.

Boys deserve no less.

TSA searches are absurd Americans of all stripes have apparently had enough humiliation, groping and intimidation at the hands of the TSA. Forget the occasional story about some petty authority-abusing flunky.

I’m talking about confirmed mainstream policy, which is, you go through the full-nudity imager, or you get groped. Or, if you refuse, you are detained, harassed and sued.

But what is most irksome is none of this helps. The TSA has never stopped a single terrorist. And even if everything works perfectly, a dedicated terrorist (who’s going to die anyway) will just move up to the “colon bomber” strategy, knowing that is nearly undetectable.

We will waste billions of dollars, billions of traveler-hours and every last shred of our dignity, for what?

Put this in perspective: the 9/11 hijacker trick will never work again because we the passengers will fight with everything we have. In the absence of that, we are down to saving a plane and a few hundred people.

When 600 people die and 6,000 are injured every week in their cars, and another 300 are murdered, this fantastically grotesque distortion of risk only serves to keep the drumbeat of fear 6 December 2, 2010

Bush smarter than Clinton?

The recent memoir by former President George Bush reveals an understanding of the political system not shown by his predecessor. Bush sought legal opinions from Washington attorneys he appointed to declare that waterboarding was not torture, irrespective of international and Geneva law. By the simple act of consulting government attorneys he appointed, he has been given a free ride in Washington.

Compare the George Bush legal defense to Bill Clinton’s. Put aside, for the moment, your feelings about how Clinton failed to exercise the mature judgment we hope to see in a president. He was impeached for denying he had sex because of evidence showing he had fellatio. I submit, had he asked his appointed Department of Justice attorneys to formally declare that fellatio was not sex, he would have never faced impeachment. He failed to play

s Sarah Palin smart enough to be president?

Good question.

Are you?

Come on now — no false modesty. No quips about being smart enough not to run for president, or any other dodges. The question is do you think you are smart enough to be CEO of the United States of America, and to, as the presidential oath puts it, “faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and … to the best of [your] ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States?”

That’s a pretty simple and straightforward job description — think you’re smart enough to handle it?

Or put the question another way: Do you think you’re too dumb to be president? Again, no false modesty. Fess up.

If it’s any comfort, I think it’s a good bet that you are smart enough to be president. This isn’t because you’re so damned smart; it’s because being president of the United States, although it requires some extraordinary personal attributes, doesn’t demand extraordinary intelligence and erudition.

The truth is that when it comes to running the United States, you don’t have to be much above average in terms of smarts. The genius of the Constitution is that it created a government that doesn’t require a genius to run it.

Academic credentialing, which supposedly says something about a person’s

smarts, hasn’t been much of a predictor of success when it comes to the presidency.

While it is true that most American presidents have had university degrees, the two greatest — Washington and Lincoln — did not.

Washington was home-schooled; his hopes for a formal education in England ended with his father’s death in 1743 when he was 11. (He eventually earned a Surveyor’s Certificate from the College of William and Mary.)

Lincoln had about 18 months of formal schooling. His legal education consisted of reading law books after he was elected to the Illinois legislature.

You would have to be pretty dumb to argue that the lack of formal education, never mind college degrees, rendered either Washington or Lincoln unfit for the presidency.

Between 1789 and 1869, seven of the first 17 U.S. presidents didn’t have college degrees. (Washington, Jackson, Van Buren, Taylor, Fillmore, Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.)

From 1869 to the present, only two presidents lacked college degrees — Grover Cleveland and Harry Truman.

History’s judgment of both has been “better than average.”

If you are going to run the United States, it certainly helps to be intelligent and reasonably well educated, but there are more important qualities to have.

question that a senior colloquium in American government could argue about all semester. However, my personal answer comes not from political science, but from poetry. It’s the list of character traits in Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If.” Here are some of them, cast as questions to a potential candidate and semi-delyriced (if that’s a word) to keep the poetry from distracting from the content: Can you keep your head in a crisis when all your advisers and political allies are panicking and blaming you?

(It’s something that can be a big plus when your finger is on the nuclear trigger.)

Can you trust yourself when everyone doubts you, but make allowance for their doubting, too? (Like Bush, ordering the surge in Iraq.)

Can you dream — and not make dreams your master? Can you think — and not make thoughts your aim? ( JFK and Theodore Roosevelt could.)

Can you talk with crowds and keep your virtue? (Obama may have a problem here.)

Can you walk with kings and not lose the common touch? (Reagan could and did.)

Can you wait and not be tired by waiting? (Truman, Eisenhower,

Do you have the inner strength and tenacity to keep going after you have nothing left in the tank physically, intellectually or emotionally except the will that says to you, “Hold on.” (Think Lincoln in 1864. Think Ulysses S. Grant’s entire life.)

Do all men count with you, but none too much? (The prime directive for any democratically elected political leader is to do the greatest good for the greatest number. In order to do that, all men must count with you, but none too much.)

And so on.

These “presidential” qualities are expressions of morality, integrity, character, even wisdom, but not necessarily of smarts.

So to return to the original question: Is Sarah Palin smart enough to be President? Yes, she is, and so are you.

But the real question is does Sarah Palin have what it takes to be president? It’s too soon to say, but I think if measured against the Kipling standard, she would stack up pretty well — probably better than a lot of those who have occupied the Oval Office.

Secret concert announced KGNU Community Radio is hosting a “secret concert” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9. The event will be held in the Odd Fellows Lodge at 1543 Pearl St., above the Boulder Army Store.

The show will feature an evening of acoustic indie music.

“We decided to have the artists be secret for two reasons,” KGNU officials said in a press release. “First, we like the idea of a secret show at a ‘secret’ location that most residents of Colorado have never had the opportunity to see. Wrongful secrecy Reading the headlines, it’s easy to get the impression that Wikileaks.org, the website that on Nov. 28 began publishing 251,287 leaked U.S. embassy cables, is on a mission to compromise the security of the United States and its allies. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, even accused WikiLeaks of having blood on its hands by exposing intelligence gathering techniques and combat techniques to “our enemies.”

But the harsh U.S. government reaction, which includes potentially going after the media for publishing leaked secret papers, is more likely the result of acute embarrassment than any true damage to national security or risk to our troops.

Among the published documents are reports on the partying habits of the Italian prime minister — certainly not the sort of thing that’s going to get anyone killed.

Daniel Ellsberg, a former Pentagon employee, points out that the same allegations were made when he leaked some 7,000 pages of classified government documents that exposed the behind-the-scenes history of the Vietnam War. But, in fact, the leak may have saved lives by helping galvanize public opposition to the war.

Ellsberg said during the interview that he admires whoever is behind the leaks.

(Army Pvt. Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst who is being held at Quantico Marine Base, is believed to be the leak behind these documents, as well as the shocking video of a helicopter gun crew attacking and killing innocent Iraqis, including a journalist.)

“It’s the wrongful secrecy of information like this that got us into Vietnam and Afghanistan and Iraq or has kept the war going in Afghanistan,” Ellsberg said. “So if there’s any chance of shortening that it’s worth a person’s life.”

Certainly, national security is important. But what we’ve repeatedly seen is a tendency on the part of the U.S. government to take advantage of its ability to hide “secrets” to conceal facts from the public. Especially when the hawks at the Pentagon want a war.

It would be wrong of any government to harass or prosecute Wikileaks for publishing documents it did not steal. If the U.S. government wants to deal with the real problem, it should start by looking at its lame security. When an army private can sit at his desk downloading allegedly sensitive documents, then the problem belongs to the government, not Wikileaks.

Pigskin preacher The University of Colorado is diligently searching for a qualified individual to run its most important program. No, it’s not the Nobel Prize-winning physics program. Nor is it the internationally recognized aerospace engineering program. It’s the football team.

With the departure of Dan Hawkins, CU is hoping to find someone who can turn those gridiron yawns to wins. And on the list of possibles is none other than former CU head coach Bill McCartney.

For those of you who are recent imports, McCartney is the one who decided that being head coach gave him duties beyond coming up with a winning game plan.

Somehow he felt being head coach also made him head preacher and gave him a pulpit from which to spew his sexist, anti-gay interpretation of Christianity. And he didn’t hold back.

He proselytized to his team members, causing some of them to complain. He proclaimed that homosexuality was an “abomination against almighty God.” He informed us that women should live “in submission” to their husbands because men are meant to be the undisputed heads of their households (and everything else). He founded Promise Keepers, an allegedly Christian men’s organization that initially seemed to exist to bash feminists and gays.

In the meantime, 24 Buffs were arrested on charges ranging from minor stuff like trespassing to major crimes like sexual assault and his daughter got pregnant twice by two different players — in 1989 by Sal Aunese, who shortly thereafter died of stomach cancer, and in 1993 by Shannon Clavelle.

But, hey, those were the glory days, right? McCartney brought 11-1 seasons, division championships and Orange Bowl glory to CU, which translated into big money, so who cares if he’s sexist and homophobic?

We do.

If the search committee brings him back, let’s hope they make him keep this promise: to remember he’s just a football coach, and not a minister.

The economic impact of undocumented

F

ew issues in our country are as heated and emotional as the topic of undocumented immigrants, especially those

from Mexico.

And here in Colorado, the issue is coming to the forefront as Republican lawmakers met this past week to discuss immigration issues, including plans for legislation similar to controversial SB 1070 in Arizona.

Many believe “illegal aliens” are taking Americans’ jobs, getting paid under the table and feeding from the public trough by relying on government services — services that are funded by taxes paid by “real” citizens.

But a closer look at the research reveals the issue is not that simple. While undocumented immigrants may have a negative financial impact in the short term when the economy is down, they actually have a positive economic effect at other times.

Still, dispelling deeply ingrained urban myths about the impact of undocumented Latinos on employment and economic conditions is akin to dipping a toe in an ocean of controversy or tumbling down a rabbit hole.

How many of the 3.9 million Americans whose jobs were lost from January 2009 to this past January remain resolute in their beliefs that undocumented workers were at fault? And given the state of the current economic conditions we face locally and globally, to what extent can the “American” public accept what economic research conducted in the past 10 years points to in terms of potential benefits resulting from immigration over the long run?

Impacts in the long and short term A report written in June 2010 for the Migration Policy Institute’s Labor Markets, titled “The Impact of Immigrants in Recession and Economic Expansion,” sheds light on long- and short-term economic implications of the immigration debate.

Author Giovanni Peri of the University of California-Davis writes, “In the long run, immigrants 12 December 2, 2010

do not reduce native employment rates, but they do increase productivity and hence average income. This finding is consistent with the broad existing literature on the impact of immigration in the United States.”

But what about the short term? According to Peri, in this shorter context, “immigration may slightly reduce native employment and average income at first, because the economic adjustment process is not immediate. The long-run gains to productivity and income become significant after seven to 10 years.”

In addition, he says, that shorter-term impact is dependent on the state of the economy. Peri explains that when the economy is on an upswing, “new immigration creates jobs in sufficient numbers to leave native employment unharmed,” he says, even in the very short term and even for native workers who are not as educated.

However, when the economy is on a downswing, and thus not responding as quickly, then recent immigrants seem to have a “small negative impact on native employment” in the near term, but not the long term.

“In other words, immigration unambiguously improves employment, productivity and income, but this involves adjustments,” Peri says. “These adjustments are more difficult during downturns, suggesting that the United States would benefit most from immigration that adjusts to economic conditions.

While immigration already responds to some extent to the economic cycle (particularly illegal immigration), the current immigration system makes legal immigration inflows particularly unresponsive.”

According to David Coates, a professor and the Worrell Chair in Anglo-American Studies at Wake Forest University and author of several books, including Getting Immigration Right: What Every American Needs to Know, the economic impact of having undocumented workers in this country is a huge question.

Coates has a website (www.davidcoates.net) dedicated to countering misinformation with accurate data and clear guidance to sources on numerous aspects of the immigration issue, so people can educate themselves.

“The broad impact is positive,” Coates told Boulder Weekly. “They raise GDP [Gross Domestic

Product], lower prices, thus raising living standards, and sustain industries that would otherwise struggle for labor.”

In his book, Coates goes on to specify that any downside immigration impacts on wages, work and welfare must be placed in the “context of the growth of GDP associated with immigrant-enhanced labor supply, the strengthening of U.S. competitiveness through the use of imported skilled labor, the positive impact of even unskilled immigrant workers on the prices of the goods and services they help to produce, and the associated increase in demand by the wages paid to undocumented immigrant workers themselves.

“There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of the positive contribution made by even undocumented workers to local demand levels: anecdotal evidence of boosted demand, and anecdotal evidence of fall in demand when illegal immigration is squeezed out of an area by tighter policing,” adds Coates. “And now we have a string of general reports — from the 1997 report of the National Research Council to the 2006 report of the Council of Economic Advisers to the President — all arguing that the long-term benefits arising from legal immigration outweigh the immediate costs associated with the new arrivals.”

Shedding light on urban myths Three particular urban myths circulate profusely in our community and nationwide around undocumented workers costing “American” citizens their jobs and costing government millions of dollars on public services and taxes: Myth #1: Undocumented immigrants are costing U.S. citizens jobs, and U.S. citizens are just as willing to do the menial jobs that some Mexicans do.

Coates told Boulder Weekly, “There is very little evidence of native-born Americans wanting to do the heavy manual work, particularly in construction and agriculture, that undocumented workers do and did.

Even now, in the depths of the recession.”

In “Chapter 6: The Economic Impact of Immigration” of his book Getting Immigration Right: What Every American Needs to Know, Coates writes, Boulder Weekly

“When low paying jobs done by immigrants are offered to native-born workers without significant increases in wages, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of limited take-up; and … when illegal immigrants are driven from employment by tighter law enforcement, replacing those workers often proves extraordinarily difficult.”

He told Boulder Weekly, “There is also, of course, a lot of hidden unemployment among undocumented workers in those industries — and in hotels and leisure — the other great area of concentration of undocumented workers. They are doubly hit, without work and without benefits. It is not just the nativeborn Americans who are suffering in this recession.

“There will be some casualties, people whose job security will be made worse by the presence of undocumented workers, particularly equivalent unskilled native-born workers and recent legal immigrants, but not the bulk of the U.S. labor force, which historically has benefited from immigration, legal or otherwise, by rising up occupational ladders, leaving the grunt work behind,” says Coates.

Myth #2: Government would save millions of dollars on public services currently offered to undocumented immigrants and their kids, including unemployment, Medicaid and education.

In Getting Immigration Right, Coates writes, “The fiscal burden of illegal immigration is easier to see, if equally easy to exaggerate. There are many claims made about the excessive pressure placed by illegal immigrants on health services and the penal system, when thus far at least illegal Mexican immigrants — and, indeed, legal ones — use health services and end up in jail at a lower rate than do native-born Americans.”

Gerald Prante is a senior economist at the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research group based in Washington, D.C. He has expertise in data analysis, including microsimulation models, as well as federal income tax distributional analysis.

“Obviously, there are costs to immigration, such as certain government services may have higher demands placed upon them. Traffic congestion increases. Crime may go up in certain areas,” he says. “But there are benefits, such as a greater labor pool that tends to raise living standards. Goods and services are produced more efficiently, which tends to make society, as a whole, better off.

“Are some people worse off as a result of immigration? Absolutely. But, on the net, society is better off, especially over the long term when government costs tend to subside due largely to the fact that secondand third- and fourth-generation immigrants earn significantly higher incomes than first-generation,” says Prante.

Coates shares his thoughts on this myth that addresses the family, education and Medicaid areas.

“There is no doubt that undocumented workers, particularly now that the wall is being built, are increasingly prone to come with families, and to stay.

So there are particular pressures on border states’ education systems. And not just border states, also North Carolina and other states as the undocumented flee Arizona,” says Coates.

“But undocumented workers do not get unemployment benefits or Medicaid,” he adds. “Even legal immigrants have to wait five years for health benefits.

And undocumented workers tend to stay away from hospitals and doctors for fear of deportation.”

According to Laurel Herndon, an attorney with the Immigrant Legal Center of Boulder County, “My Boulder Weekly

understanding is that the Social Security/Medicare money goes into a fund for payers who cannot be properly identified,” she says. “My understanding is also that this fund has accumulated past half a trillion dollars and is being used to pay government obligations to the same extent as the rest of the Social Security trust fund.”

In Getting Immigration Right, Coates writes, “Overall, the general consensus among professional economists does seem to be that immigration yields a modest economic surplus overall — one accruing to American consumers, businesses and GDP through the arrival here of a predominantly young overseas labor force imbued with a strong work ethic.”

Myth #3: Undocumented workers don’t pay taxes.

Not so, says Herndon, who explains that those not being paid “under the table” pay the same amount of federal, state and social security/Medicare taxes as all wage-earners.

Prante says that undocumented immigrants pay taxes both directly and indirectly.

“Directly, many pay federal income taxes and payroll taxes, such as FICA and Medicare, either using a TIN [Tax Identification Number] or a fake Social Security number.”

In a submission to his “Tax Policy Blog,” Prante says that in 2005 approximately 1.4 million individuals filed tax returns with TINs, representing an increase of 40 percent over 2004.

He also writes that empirical evidence tends to demonstrate that a large share of “economic incidence” (who actually pays) falls on these undocumented workers. And even in cases of individuals who are compensated “under the table,” where the income isn’t reported to the Internal Revenue Service by either the employer or the employee, undocumented immigrants pay other taxes, Prante says. “[Undocumented workers] often don’t get their refunds,” Prante says, “and furthermore, they don’t often get their Social Security benefits from payroll taxes paid. These illegal immigrants also pay sales taxes when they purchase products at retail stores, restaurant meals and then selective sales taxes like gasoline, tobacco, alcohol, etc. Some even directly pay property taxes, or indirectly through rent,” says Prante.

“Like everyone else, they bear the burden of indirect taxes such as taxes on businesses like apartment complexes or taxes on insurance companies, oil companies, etc. It is just not true that [undocumented] immigrants pay no taxes.”

According to Randolph Capps and Michael E. Fix, authors of a report by the nonpartisan Urban Institute, real estate taxes, which are also paid by undocumented immigrants whether they own homes or pay it through rent, make a variety of state, local school and other public services possible.

The employer-worker dilemma In 2009, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fined 2,900 companies $3 million after audits of employee files revealed that these companies were providing work to undocumented immigrants. This led to the deportation of 279,000 workers in fiscal year 2010.

Coates told Boulder Weekly, “[Employers] are now being regulated far more tightly than in the Bush years.” In fact, that deportation statistic represents a 10 percent increase over the same timeframe in the last fiscal year of the Bush administration. And ironically, despite the current administration’s purported focus on giving the boot to individuals with criminal

records, 51 percent of folks expelled in 2009-10 didn’t have a criminal record. And a hefty number of those with “records” had committed minor offences, like driving without a U.S. license or with faulty taillights.

So just how are these tighter reins around the necks of employers affecting the employer-undocumented worker relationship?

Despite this national tension, there is a dynamic among some employers in Boulder County that extends beyond the paperwork. In her legal immigration activities, Herndon has seen it firsthand.

“I have in the past met with employers who would like to help regularize the status of such [undocumented] persons because they find the [immigrants] to be excellent workers and wonderful people,” says Herndon. “It’s not possible to generalize, but many [companies] refuse to lay off such workers because of the human connection that has been established. Such employers fault the federal government for not providing a path for employers to help workers who may be undocumented.

“It’s interesting that the employment verification system set up in 1986, when employment eligibility verification began, placed two requirements on employers: 1) do not knowingly employ those who are not eligible, but 2) do not discriminate against those who are eligible,” adds Herndon. “These equally important and often conflicting requirements led to a federal system where employers could only look at the eligibility document the employee chose to provide, and decide ‘on its face’ whether the document appeared to be valid.

“Employers were federally prohibited from investigating the status of work applicants, and no ‘E-Verify’ system existed. As a result, many employers accepted documents, which, in fact, were not valid,” says Herndon. “But in the position of ‘guessing’ about a document’s validity, it was safer to decide that a document was valid. Back then, if an employer refused to accept a document as valid, and it turned out in fact to be valid, the employer could face federal civil liability for discrimination. The old I-9 forms even contained a bold-faced, large-print notice to employers regarding civil rights violations.

“As a result, many employers have built their businesses with the help of employees who are not in fact authorized to work in the U.S.,” she says. “While there’s concern about employers exploiting undocumented workers, there’s a parallel concern that good employers may have to choose between complying with federal law and losing their businesses — should they belatedly learn that workers they believed were authorized in fact were not.

“Anecdotally, employers in this position have expressed that they will not turn on their employees,” says Herndon. “Boulder is not a sanctuary city.”

She provided Boulder Weekly with a synopsis that she shared with the Boulder Human Relations Commissioners, a document that summarizes the areas related to Federal Comprehensive Immigration Reform that are strictly off-limits for states and municipalities.

“The problem is that the federal government doesn’t care about the ways in which the broken federal system is affecting cities across the nation,” Herndon adds. “In my opinion, a good way for cities to encourage the federal government to fix its system is to refuse to cooperate on voluntary federal immigration initiatives. I would equate such an effort to a parent saying ‘no ice cream until you finish your dinner.’”

And don’t worry about getting your feisty puppy to sit still. Between the two of them, Calvin and Richey have decades of experience getting animals to cooperate for the camera.

“We have photographed everything from your typical dog-and-cat combo to a graduation photo of a chinchilla in a matching tuxedo with the woman who was graduating,” Calvin says.

And while pet products make great gifts, Calvin stresses that pets do not.

“It’s sort of scary around the holidays because people just don’t listen to the fact that you should never get a person a pet as a gift, because very often it’s not a gift. They don’t want it.”

If you really want to give someone the gift

of pet ownership, Calvin suggests a gift certificate to the humane society. Not only can the recipient experience the joy of choosing their own pet, but if he or she isn’t ready to take in a new animal, the money can be given back to the shelter as a donation.

But what do you get for that lucky dog that has everything? How about some peace of mind? According to Calvin, one of the most exciting products she’s seen this year is the Anxiety Wrap. A lightweight, modified blanket, the wrap uses a set of straps and buckles to gently “hug” Fido when he’s upset or anxious. Calvin says the constant pressure releases endorphins that calm the dog, which is perfect for dogs that suffer from fear of thunderstorms or general anxiety, like shop mascot Farfel, a bearded collie.

Calvin decided to give the wrap a try because Farfel’s anxiety was so severe he regularly injured himself when he became upset.

“I put it on. Within five minutes he laid down and went to sleep. It is a profound product,” Calvin says. “Farfel has a life now.

All we have to do is put it on and he suffers from nothing.”

here is nothing like holiday treats to create a festive mood in any home or office this time of year. Something about colorful cookies, fudge and other confectionary items truly make the holiday spirit more prominent. While it’s fun to bake at home if you have the time and ingredients, sometimes it’s not always possible amid holiday shopping, family visits and weekends on the Colorado slopes.

Numerous local bakeries and confectionaries are gearing up with the sweetest treats for your enjoyment this holiday season.

Boulder Baked on Broadway is more than a latenight destination after an outing on Pearl Street.

This bakery offers homemade desserts including cakes, cupcakes, pie and cookies made from family recipes. Their eggnog pie with brandy, rum and spice egg custard would certainly be worth tasting for eggnog-lovers, and their cranberry orange white chocolate pie sounds like a winning combination, too. Holiday cakes vary in price, but holiday pies are $19 each.

Tee & Cakes in downtown Boulder has been locally owned and operated since 2007 and offers a vast variety of cupcakes, cakes, coffee and pastries.

Keep your holiday dollars here BIBA declares December ‘Buy Local’ month

rom late November through December, “holiday shopping” takes center stage in business and economic news. Black Friday — one day of conspicuous consumption — can set the tone for the nation’s entire economic outlook. And if a single day of personal spending can do that, imagine what a month of holiday shopping could do for a local economy.

That’s exactly what the folks at the Boulder County Independent Business Association (BIBA) did — they imagined what a whole month of dedicated shoppers spending locally could do for our county. December is Buy Local month, and Boulder County residents are encouraged to keep their dollars closer to home.

BIBA estimates that for every dollar spent at locally owned independent businesses, roughly 80 cents stays in the community, instead of being siphoned off by out-of-state corporations. By comparison, for every dollar spent at chain stores, only about 40 cents stays in the community.

And with sales tax supporting everything from public libraries to trail maintenance, it’s more important than ever to keep your holiday dollars offline and in the community. Many online retailers don’t pay state sales tax, and while that might translate to a few dollars’ savings for you, don’t forget about all of the city and county services that need your support.

To kick off this month, BIBA is hosting its Local and Loving It Fest at the Boulder Outlook Hotel on Dec. 4. Admission is free and the event is open to the public, so come and check out all of the activities. Local merchants will be selling and giving away goods and services, local artists will display and sell their artwork as well as give demonstrations of their techniques, and local musicians will provide the entertainment. You can also sit in on the Community Forum to hear top local businesses speak about the importance of supporting your local community in a variety of ways. Kids will also have plenty to do, with activities like face painting, Ukrainian egg decorating and hoop silk screening.

Support local artists, get a great gift Find the perfect present at these artists’ markets

hen you think “unique gift,” chances are you’re not picturing a “Made in China” sticker. For most of us, unique is more along the lines of hand-crafted, lovingly made and creative.

Those words also describe exactly what dozens of local artists and crafters are producing year-round right here in Boulder County. And in the coming weeks, two special events are helping connect these local talents with holiday shoppers in search of something truly distinctive for that special someone.

The first events is the Boulder County Farmers’ Markets’ annual Holiday Farmers’ Market and Gift Show, taking place Dec. 4 and 5 at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. Now in its fifth year, this holiday show has proved so popular that for the first time ever it has been extended from one day to two.

“Every year it’s gotten bigger and bigger,” says Shanon Olsen, a member of the BCFM board of directors.

Food and produce vendors will include a number of market regulars, and the 40 artists and crafters were selected by a jury from more than 100 applicants. And because this event takes place indoors, you don’t have to worry about a sudden snow shower putting a damper on your shopping spree.

time offering from Firefly Handmade, an artists’ collective based out of Lyons and supporting artists throughout Boulder County.

The Firefly Handmade 2010 Holiday Market will be held Dec. 10-12 at 1904 Pearl St. in Boulder and will feature sandwiches and snacks from The Dish, kids’ activities sponsored by Clementine Studios and “eco” gift wrapping from Lysiwraps. And if all that isn’t enough to entice you, it will be a zero-waste event as well.

Because the three Firefly founders are artists themselves, they understand the hurdles that independent artists and crafters face in getting their work sold.

“It’s hard for people who are making things to make money,” says co-founder Kristin FitzGerrell, who also owns Studio 22. Even in Boulder, where the local spirit is alive and well, the market for local arts isn’t as strong as it could be.

While people are often willing to drop several thousand dollars on a new road bike, she says, they often balk at spending $200 for a painting by a local artist.

That’s why Firefly made it easy for artists to get into their first ever holiday market. Vendors pay a small, fixed fee for a table or a booth space, and no additional fees or commissions. This format allows a wide range of artisans, including those who can’t afford to quit their day

job, a chance to break into the local market.

Getting into Firefly’s market is easy, but not too easy. Like the Boulder Farmers’ Market holiday show, the Firefly event is also a juried event. From a pool of more than 100 applicants, only about 60 will have a spot at the market. Those 60 vendors, however, represent a huge range of arts and crafts, so there’s no need to worry about selection.

FitzGerrell says offerings will include natural wooden toys, handknit and felted goods, jewelry, recycled art, woodcut prints, homemade caramels and more.

“This is a great way to connect the area’s best local crafters with holiday shoppers,” FitzGerrell says.

“Handmade crafts are pretty cool. It does have more of a human touch, literally.”

And even though this will be Firefly Handmade’s first event, it is getting into the full holiday spirit.

On Dec. 4, Firefly artists will be marching in downtown Boulder’s Lights of December Parade with a float truly reflective of their DIY character.

These two holiday markets offer more than just a chance to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.

They also give you a chance to boost your local economy and support artists and craft workers who are doing something they really love.

“There is something very special

about buying an item from the very person who poured their creative heart and soul into it,” says Allison Bozeman, another co-founder of Firefly Handmade. “If everyone made the pledge to buy just one hand-crafted product for someone on their gift list this holiday season, think of the ripple effect that would have on the giver, the receiver and the livelihood of the maker.”

And the fun continues even after the holidays. Firefly Handmade is already planning its spring craft market, and the Boulder County Farmers’ Markets’ regular hours will start up again next April.

A third artists’ market, the Boulder Holiday Gift Festival, will take place every weekend in December until Christmas and wil be located at the corner of 9th and Pearl Streets in downtown Boulder. Colorado wines are perfect to give, serve and share

t’s time for your big holiday feast, and you’ve decided to go as local as possible. You have your ham from Fox Fire Farms, cheeses from Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy, desserts from Kim & Jake’s Cakes and your wine from — France? To make your meal truly local, try looking a little closer to home for your beverages.

Colorado is home to more than 90 vineyards. According to the Colorado Wine Industry Development Board, Colorado’s grape-growing regions range in elevation from 4,000 to 7,000 feet, making them some of the highest vineyards in the world, and during the past 25 years the number of licensed wineries operating in the state has grown from one to 42. You can find many of these selections right here in Boulder, either from local winemakers or merchants. These bottles make excellent additions to your own festive feasts, or a great gift to introduce friends and family to Colorado’s blossoming wine tradition.

Augustina Winery, Colorado’s only “one-woman winery,” is owned and operated by Marianne “Gussie” Walter. Walter uses grapes from family-owned vineyards in Grand Junction and Palisade. The winery is located at 4715 N. Broadway, in Boulder, and you can call 303-545-2047 for hours of operation.

Ciatano’s Vineyards in Lyons (16858 N. St. Vrain Dr.) uses Colorado-sourced grapes for its selection of whites and reds. The winter hours for their tasting room are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Monday, through

While turkey is a game bird by origin (or in the general fowl category if you’re buying conventional versus heirloom or heritage birds), you’re not limited to just white wines. The rich gravies, stuffings and side dishes served alongside the main course allow you to uncork a nice red with light fruit and a fuller, longer finish. This also provides options for those among us who actually prefer the dark meat on the carving platter. The flavors of turkey are really determined by the ingredients of the stuffing or the seasonings and the sauce. If your stuffing is seasoned with oysters, look for that dry, crisp Sauvignon Blanc. If you add sausage into the mix, go with an off-dry Gewürztraminer.

And if you’re looking for a red wine to match a rich brown gravy, the Pinot Noirs from the West Elks area are ideal.

Vegetarian dishes pair well with the soft, fruity notes in Merlot, a perfect complement to Colorado-grown butternut squash or a dried-cherry sauce.

For those of you who prefer mead to traditional grape-based vino, Redstone Meadery in Boulder offers free tastings of its honey-based wines. Breaking the ice without guilt

hopping for the most responsible tools for our chores can be challenging unless a knowledgeable merchant is already ahead of the game.

At McGuckin Hardware in Boulder, for instance, customers will notice that the varieties of snow shovel greatly Charmaine Ortega Getz outnumber the kinds of deicer, or ice-melting products.

That’s because there are many products that say “safe for lawns and pets,” but it’s not much of a choice if they’re all offering the same thing. “‘Environmentally friendly’ is just a marketing label for some manufacturers,” says Steven Wilke, representative for the McGuckin garden department. “People here value their pets; they want something that won’t harm animals.”

Or their lawns, gardens and the environment, in general.

So Wilke will show you the one ice-melting product McGuckin carries that will chemically bust up ice in a powerful hurry if you’re not fussy. But he says a high enough residue of that stuff left on the ground will actually sterilize your soil, so he’ll be happier to explain why there are better choices.

For many kinds of deicer, the melting magic comes from some combination of a salt — chloride — with calcium, magnesium, potassium or sodium.

Sodium chloride — rock salt — promotes rust, which eats away the steel in vehicles and the rebar in concrete walks and structures. It also kills plants, and it poisons pets and wildlife attracted to the taste.

while melting ice. But since it has to be applied heavier as a deicer, it can actually burn vegetation. As with rock salt, it doesn’t work below 20 degrees or so, leading to frequent freeze/thaw cycles that are hard on surfaces, including cement.

Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are often presented as “greener” alternatives to the previous options, because they don’t require as much to do the job and freeze at far lower temperatures. But when mixed with water, they produce a Steven Wilke of McGuckin high level of heat Hardware that can harm plants and irritate skin.

Chlorides don’t evaporate or disintegrate. Their corrosiveness builds up and is washed into our vegetation and groundwater, picked up by animals and tracked into our homes. At best, they should be used minimally.

McGuckin carries Safe Step, a deicer without corrosive salts, which Wilke says is a step up in environmental safety. An even better option is Safe Paws, which uses an amideglycol combination that absorbs solar heat to melt ice, without harming animals.

Deicers are meant to break ice up enough to make scraping it off easier, not make it disappear.

For a chronic traction problem with a stair step or spot on a walkway, try an ice-breaker mat, which can be glued to most surfaces. A good stomp on it will break up ice.

And, says Gene Smith, a McGuckin manager who lives in the mountains, there’s a simple green solution to bigger traction problems.

“Scattered sand often works, but today I made it all the way down a long, steep, slick driveway on pea gravel,” he says.

’Trane John McLaughlin’s dimensional travels

I

t may not matter to most listeners that John McLaughlin’s latest CD To The One is a tribute of sorts to a virtuoso of another time.

And, truth be told, probably only the most deeply schooled jazz archivists are likely to find much tangible musical commonality between this and the object of McLaughlin’s tribute, saxophonist John Coltrane’s seminal A Love Supreme — an album recorded 44 years earlier, with a different lead instrument played by a man almost three decades McLaughlin’s junior (Coltrane was 38 when he recorded A Love Supreme; McLaughlin, 67 for To The One), in a different era and a different world where jazz music and jazz musicians were still learning languages McLaughlin has now long since mastered.

No, the echoes of Coltrane’s soul-baring masterpiece resonate now through contemporary musicians as faint but unmistakable calls to higher spiritual channeling, and genuine technical expertise in the service of challenging convention. In this regard, one might suggest McLaughlin has been channeling Coltrane for much of nearly 50 years in music.

While his band — The 4th Dimension — has been an erstwhile touring entity for a handful of years, To The One is the band’s first proper studio release. Pivoting around McLaughlin’s still-fleet guitar and guitar synth playing, and the lithe drumming and nimble keyboard work of longtime friend Gary Husband, the CD may just be McLaughlin’s most coherent and satisfying in decades, equal parts post-bop swing, fiery fusion workouts and touching, elegant balladry.

Some have characterized this as his best band since the electrifying original Mahavishnu Orchestra left the stage in the early ’70s.

When we interviewed McLaughlin a few weeks back, we suggested that we found the band a seamless and endearingly symbiotic unit completely in control of its destiny — not the kind of virtuoso-with-a-

band-trying-to-keep-up kind of scenario we’ve heard on other McLaughlin electric projects over the years.

But he did speak highly of this outfit.

“Absolutely!” McLaughlin says.

“Though I’m not sure about the line ‘fully in control of its destiny’... But it is a group that has been developing over a number of years now, and it’s no secret that the quality of any venture is proportional to the amount of dedication to it. The CD was recorded quickly, but the advantage of studio recording is that you have the chance to record different versions of the tunes, and select the best performance.

“A wonderful band. ... Gary Husband is an exceptional musician.

We’ve been friends for years even prior to playing together. He has always been one of my favorite drummers, but he really blew me away when I heard his piano recordings. That he can play both keyboards and drums in performance is wonderful. It’s also true he has an innate sense about my music that puts him in the best place for interpreting.”

As for the material — all McLaughlin originals — we asked the guitarist how the pieces came to be.

“I’m sorry to tell you that I’ve no idea how this or any music comes to me,” he says. “It’s a big mystery. It was only after writing the music that I realized the connection between the two recordings. Of course, there is the spiri-

tual connection.

“Coltrane is, in a certain way, a guru to me, like Miles [Davis] and even Sri Chinmoy. But with Coltrane, the impact of his Love Supreme recording on me cannot be underestimated. I believe that my own recording is a kind of subconscious expression of that musical and spiritual impact. I should remind you that the impact from this recording was at first spiritual, since the music was way over my head. It actually took me nine months of continuous listening to finally ‘hear’ what he was playing. Some of us develop slower than others.”

One wonders if what Coltrane was playing — or trying to express — on A Love Supreme still has the power to reach across the generations to younger listeners today, so far removed from the communities, and in a very real sense the personal suffering, that gave them voice.

“The great players of the past will always remain great,” McLaughlin says.

“The inspiration they generate goes beyond any particular time or fashion.

The question of finding a voice will always be difficult for some and easy for others. For me it was not so easy.

“Plus, we are evolving continuously and as a consequence our concepts are evolving with us. Regarding your question about jazz music and its power, it is not the music that speaks; it is the musi-

cian and the soul of the musician. It is self evident that if the musician is shallow, the music will be correspondingly shallow and not satisfying to the listener.

I would also add that the blues is not the sole domain of jazz. I’ve heard other kinds of blues from Indian musicians, from gypsy and flamenco musicians. It really comes down to the person and his depth of feeling. To have profound music you need profound players.”

This project follows up a successful run, and a Grammy award, with Five Peace Band, a quintet McLaughlin formed with fellow Miles alum Chick Corea a couple years ago. For his part, Corea had just wrapped up a worldwide reunion tour with the essential Return to Forever quartet (with Lenny White, Stanley Clarke and Al DiMeola), and while the shows were generally well received, the reunion splintered at the end of the tour, with DiMeola dropping out from any further participation amid some tensions.

We wondered if the whole notion of reforming old bands was a subject of discussion between McLaughlin and Corea while on tour, as McLaughlin himself had tried in vain some years ago to reform the original Mahavishnu Orchestra.

“Bands can only succeed if the players are inspired, have great discipline, have profound admiration and affection

for their fellow musicians, and love to play! Five Peace Band had this in spades,” McLaughlin says. “As far as reforming old groups, in my opinion it can only work if there is real affection and respect amongst the players. If it’s not based on love and only on money, it’ll never truly work. In the ’80s I tried over an extended period of time to reform the first Mahavishnu. I failed because there simply was not enough love between us all. In this case it’s better that we didn’t!”

So we wondered if the book on Mahavishnu, that audacious and irreducible hydra of an electric jazz-fusion band, is finally closed for McLaughlin.

No way.

“The book on that band and those days will be open till I die,” he says. “I don’t know how you can ask such a question! That band and that music is an integral part of my history, and if you listen to To the One you will even see allusions — musical — to Mahavishnu.

There are Mahavishnu influences in Shakti and even in the guitar trio with Paco and Al. I love the music from that era as I love the music from others.

“In a way I’m like a painter. I never know what I’m gonna paint next, but whatever it is, it will be influenced by what I’ve done in the past. It’s impossible to avoid.”

Brother Ali thinks recent personal turmoil will inspire his music

rother Ali’s two-day stint at the Fox Theatre this Sunday and Monday is bound to be a good time. Just don’t be surprised if the rapper seems pensive rather than celebratory.

The Minneapolis hip-hop artist is part of the famed Rhymesayers collective along with Atmosphere, P.O.S. and MF Doom. He’s collaborated with The Roots, played the late night TV circuit, and was featured as “One to Watch” in Rolling Stone. He’s also an incredibly devout Muslim who just returned from the most intense experience of his life.

However, it wasn’t merely the emotions that took over but the terrifying physical elements as well.

“There’s a lot of terrifying aspects,” Ali explains. “People get trampled. For me, I’m legally blind, so that’s also a challenge. I don’t speak Arabic either. I can read and write the Qur’an, but I can’t speak it conversationally. I got lost one time when I was there in this tent city where there’s four million people sleeping in tents on the ground. There’s no cabs or telephones. I already had blisters on my feet covering the bottom of both, and I ended up walking for eight hours not knowing where I was going or if I’d make it back to my group.”

For an artist already so attuned to his spirituality, it might be difficult to perceive Ali taking his craft to another level — yet that’s exactly what he believes will happen as he moves forward in 2011.

“I’ve rededicated myself across the board to not do anything at all contrary to my craft,” Ali says. “I’ve made a commitment to myself and to my spirituality that I wouldn’t do, feel, say, think anything that doesn’t serve my purpose in life. I just refuse to think thoughts and make gestures that don’t serve what I believe I’m here to do in this life.

“I kept praying, ‘Either show me that this isn’t right or help me to dedicate myself to it completely so I can do it the best way possible,’” he continues. “It’s gotta be one or the other. There’s no more questioning it. I either have to walk away from it completely or just give myself to it completely. So I’m completely rededicated to this artistic calling.”

Lucero brings in help to fight genre labels

F

or years, Lucero has been considered by some to be an alt-country band. But ask Lucero frontman Ben Nichols about the label, and it’s obvious he always saw his band in a different light.

“When we started we got lumped in with the alt-country stuff,” Nichols says. “And for sure there’s a Southern accent to what we do, and I think that’s the main reason. And we’re not offended by being included with that genre, but I think from the very beginning there was always something else in there. We say punk rock, which [guitarist] Brian [Venable] and I definitely were fans of before the band, but we’re also huge indie rock fans.

At least in my brain, there’s just as much Archers Of Loaf in there as Johnny Cash or Ryan Adams or whatever.”

The talk of stylistic labels is timely these days because 1372 Overton Park, the seventh and newest CD from Lucero since the band formed in 1998, shows that the group is not going to be limited to a genre and isn’t afraid to steer its music in new directions.

The Memphis-based band decided to explore the music that most defines its hometown, bringing a strong dose of classic soul into its rocking sound.

One way the band did this was by adding horns, which were arranged by Jim Spake, one of the leading figures on the Memphis music scene, a musician who has worked with Al Green, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis and a host of other notable artists.

But to Nichols the soul influence goes deeper than the use of horns. The B-3 organ work of Steff also gives several songs a soulful accent. And Nichols credits producer Ted Hutt for helping to bring out some of the more subtle soul elements on 1372 Overton

Park by pushing the band to add bridges and other song structure elements that enhanced the soulful feel of some songs.

The presence of a proactive producer like Hutt was something new for Lucero as well. While the band has worked with producers before — notably the late Jim Dickinson on the 2005 CD, Nobody’s Darlings — the band gave Hutt (who’s known for his work with the Gaslight Anthem) plenty of latitude to offer his expertise.

“He was always very opinionated, and it was a new experience for us,” he says. “Everybody had to give up a little bit of control and have a little bit of faith in kind of going with Ted’s direction. That was a new thing for us that me and guys had to get used to.

Everybody is really happy in the end with the results.”

Nichols and his bandmates, Venable, drummer Roy Berry and bassist John C. Stubblefield, have plenty of reason to be happy with 1372 Overton Park, which is named after the address of a house that until this

album had served as headquarters for the band, as well as the residence for all four group members at various points over the years.

But for all of the talk about Memphis soul, 1372 Overton Park is still primarily a rock ’n’ roll album in the gritty tradition of past Lucero albums, as songs like “Sounds Of The City,” “What Are You Willing To Lose” and “Smoke” set the tone for the album — along with Nichols’ gravelly vocals.

The horns, though, are a major presence, adding a layer of soul to the many more rockoriented songs and deepening the soulful feel of songs like “The Devil And Maggie Chascarrillo,” “Goodbye Again” and “Sixes And Sevens,” a strutting track that is steeped in soul from top to bottom.

“It’s territory that we hadn’t gone into before,” Nichols says of “Sixes And Sevens.” “But you’ve got that crazy B-3 sound on there. Then combined with the horns, it’s a rock ’n’ roll song definitely rooted in kind of jump R&B in a way, at least as close as we’re going to get to it.”

Lucero is able to recreate the soulful tones of 1372 Overton Park in its live show. The group has a pair of horn players for its current tour. Also on board are Steff and pedal steel player Todd Beene, who have essentially become band members.

Nichols likes the way the band’s live show has progressed with the additional musicians.

“It’s been really freeing, I guess, adding these other elements. It allows us to go to different places musically than before,” he says. “Yeah, we’ve got Rick Steff on the piano. The addition of him alone, it really made the band more confident overall. And it definitely added another layer to what the show does, so it’s worked out really well live.”

How bad ’80s music shaped Rob Sheffield’s life

or some, the bulk of popular music in the 1980s is looked back upon as a mere punch line. Flock of Seagulls? Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney doing “Say Say Say”?

Poison? Bob Dylan hamming it up in a tacky video that found him earnestly singing, “What’s a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this / A woman like you should be at home / that’s where you belong / taking care of somebody nice”?

But fluff aside, for many crotchety music geeks, the ’80s equals epochal LPs like the Clash’s London Calling and Sandanista!, the Talking Heads’ Remain in Light and Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation; the birth of The Pixies, Ween and others; and countless unforgettable hardcore classics such as Black Flag’s “Rise Above” and Bad Brains’ “Sailin’ On.” While the gluttonous mainstream record industry made millions proving Americans are dumb enough to giddily consume anything with a sizeable promotion budget, underground music in the ’80s thrived — and was subsequently responsible for influencing the post-’80s popular music we can be proud of, from Nirvana to Radiohead to Arcade Fire.

However, as Yale-educated Rolling Stone writer Rob Sheffield states in his new book Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man’s Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut (Dutton), making sense of the ’80s is much more complicated than all that.

by Adam Perry it, Talking to Girls About Duran Duran details the suburban (and in Sheffield’s case, Irish Catholic) upbringing of a young man who falls deeply in love with stereotypically ’80s music, never really outgrows it, and never really feels the need to apologize.

“Loving Duran Duran has been one of the constants in my life,” Sheffield writes in the book’s introduction. “They’re Zen masters on the path of intimate sluttiness … and there’s nothing about them that would evoke the dreaded words ‘guilty pleasure.’ As Oscar Wilde said, no civilized man ever regrets a pleasure, and no uncivilized man knows what a pleasure is.”

In other words, enjoy it or listen to something else, but don’t waste energy trying to make Sheffield feel ashamed.

Sheffield does have his own moments of fevered, frivolous interpretations of drivel such as his beloved Duran Duran’s “Rio” and Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” (which Sheffield claims is just “sensible advice” in pop-song format). But the Massachusetts-raised writer brilliantly discusses his undying passion for ’80s music as a mere backdrop for eminently readable — and often hilarious — coming-of-age anecdotes set to Madonna and Culture Club.

Chapter six details Sheffield’s summer as a teenaged exchange student in Madrid, where he embraced then-revolutionary European techno-pop and had 100 percent platonic relationships with sexy Spanish girls, who took Sheffield to discotheques and welcomed the

idea of an American boy “twirling as one of the ladies of the night” while they made out with other guys.

Sheffield succeeds in making the music of Depeche Mode and other ’80s euro-pop greats ring in his readers’ ears during the latter passage, but what’s more attention-grabbing is that a teenage male really has to love ’80s music to not only fill a role Sheffield admits in hindsight is usually served by gay dudes who don’t know they’re gay yet but to also go on to publish such a memory three decades later.

For those of us who were born in the ’80s but didn’t become conscious consumers of music — using our own paychecks to buy albums — until after MTV was playing videos for songs like the Screaming Trees’ “I Nearly Lost You” and Rage Against the Machine’s “Freedom” instead of Warrant’s “Cherry Pie,” it’s admittedly easier to look back on popular music from the ’80s with unequivocal contempt. For Rob Sheffield, however, the sound of “Livin’ On a Prayer” and other ’80s swill is now permanently attached to his recollection of becoming Rob Sheffield, for better or worse, and the writer’s apparently ongoing Catholicism is forever attached to gravitating towards decadent pop music.

Sure, I think that’s unfortunate, but I also think believing a man named Jesus rose from the dead and then ascended to heaven is unfortunate. As Lemmy sang, “I’m in love with rock ’n’ roll / it satisfies my soul / and if that’s all there is / it ain’t so bad.” But along with preferring the ’80s recordings of the Misfits to those of Hall & Oates, that’s just my opinion. In the end, growing up Christian and remaining so, as long as it’s not your M.O. to convert others, isn’t a condemnable offense. Neither is coming of age in the ’80s and still unabashedly loving Duran Duran when you’re 44, as long as you’re not hurting anyone — and especially if you’re good at making people laugh by telling them about it.

He’s not very good at it. Is there a nice way for me to tell him that?

Female Eager For Good Oral Sex Dear FEFGOS, Great question — and a common one! Many men believe that oral sex means a bunch of desperate tonguewagging. But if you want to remain in your relationship, the last thing you want to tell your man is that he is bad in bed.

Instead, start by asking if there is anything you can improve on. He may give you some pointers, then he might ask how to better his skill set. At that point you can suggest how you like to be warmed up, how you prefer the speed and pressure, and what kind of rhythm he needs to sustain for maximum pleasure or orgasm. If you don’t know these answers for yourself, you can propose doing an exploratory date together to find them out. You can also read and reiterate the tips below … or surreptitiously plant this article next to the toilet for bathroom reading.

Pre-Game: Tell your man that you find him sexy when he comes to the playing field freshly mouth-washed, stubble shaved and ready to make a little love with his tongue!

Start-Time: Exclaim to him that you love it when he arouses you with gentle caresses on your thighs, butt and breasts (or other erogenous zones you prefer). Tell him to hold out on genital caress until you are aching for it. Once you are teased towards higher levels of arousal, then moan to him about how you want his tongue to slowly wander around all areas of your vulva.

Interested In Anal Exploration Dear IIAE, If you want your woman to try anal play, you need to be open to the idea of equal reciprocation. Once you are willing to take an initial risk, she may be more likely to follow suit. Keep in mind that because many heterosexual men are hesitant to express interest in receiving anal pleasure, many women also assume the activity to be unattractive.

If you want her to try things outside her comfort zone, invite the conversation, but don’t push the activity.

For instance, because the anus contains numerous nerve endings inside and out, for men and women alike, you can chat about how anal play can be a pleasurable opportunity to expand your sex life. The red rock desert landscapes surrounding Grand Junction seem an unlikely backdrop for a ski resort, but those red rocks hide a secret known as Powderhorn. Featuring 1,600 skiable acres served by four lifts, the ski area is located on the Grand Mesa plateau, high above the moonscape that surrounds Grand Junction. Powderhorn doesn’t attract too many out-oftowners, but you can change that fact by heading west yourself.

The ski area’s proximity to the desert makes multi-sport weekends a reality: this is the only ski area where you’d be advised to take your mountain bike along with your skis, due to the nearby singletrack Mecca of Fruita.

Spend a day exploring the twin peaks of Powderhorn, hitting the powder stashes off of Mudslide or Yoo Hoo and then mix it up the next day with some riding on Prime Cut or Mary’s Loop outside of Fruita.

Finally, there’s Loveland. During frigid January days, when the Continental Divide is windswept and ugly, it’s easy to drive past Loveland to the bigger resorts on the Western Slope. But in March and April, those cold days give way to the warmth of spring, when the lateseason storms pound the ski area, leaving in their wake crystal clear skies and untouched snow. A mere 1.5 hours from Boulder, Loveland comes into its own during the latter part of the season, especially in April, where it’s not uncommon to enjoy two feet of snow in the morning and be able to soak up the sun wearing a T-shirt at the base at the end of your day. Soak it up because Loveland has one of the longest seasons in the state, and once you’re finished there, the powder is probably also finished, too. But don’t worry.

The storms will be back next winter, when you can hit the road again in search of your own private stash.

Local organic brewery celebrates first anniversary

“Like a lot of brewers today, it’s Charlie’s fault,” Turner says. Charlie, in this case, refers to Charlie Papazian, the man who founded the American Home Brewers Association in 1978 and in 1984 wrote the “home brewer’s bible,” The Complete Joy of Home Brewing.

“We both started out as home brewers,” Turner says. Now these two former home brewers are trying to establish a legacy of their own.

on tap in more than 20 locations in Colorado, including The Kitchen and the Chautauqua Dining Hall in Boulder. They also offer tours and tastings at the brewery and rent out their recently expanded tap room for parties and events.

While its brewery and list of clients have expanded, the company has largely stayed within the family. Turner’s wife is an accountant and keeps the company’s books, and the only other full-time employee is Alyson Duffey, the “admin and fun coordinator.”

As far as the popularity of organic beer, Turner says it’s really a three-part equation.

“It’s better for the consumer, it’s better for the environment, and it’s better for the beer,” says Turner.

In addition to making organic beers (several of which are also vegan-friendly), the brewery is also completely run on wind power.

With one year under their belt, Turner said that it has been an interesting experience, but one he has enjoyed.

“It’s almost taken a specific kind of pride,” says Turner. “It’s been exciting, but there were a lot of sleepless nights, wondering if this was going to work.

This first year has just gone by so fast.

“We’re lucky. We’ve gotten a great reception in the area. We’re doing better than we anticipated, and we’ll keep doing this as long as we can.”

The one-year celebration will take place from 3 to 10 p.m. at the brewery, at 4699 Nautilus Court., Suite 104, Boulder. StrEat Chefs will be serving food from 4 to 8 p.m. 21 and over only, and IDs are required.

hew, I survived Thanksgiving and dessert-a-palooza 2010.

It’s nice to be the dessert diva, but can’t someone just ask me to bring the green bean casserole sometime? Not only do they want an extraordinary pumpkin pie, they want a variety of pumpkin desserts, and then for me to “surprise” them. Here’s a cheesecake my friend Sara Lee made ... Surprise!

All right, I’m exaggerating. I don’t mind it; I’m just happy the pumpkin baking is done for the year.

On to other holiday treats. How about a Fruitcake Cheesecake?

I know what you are thinking, but I think you will like the twist on this fruitcake concoction. I think fruitcakes get a bad rap, to be honest.

I have had many a tasty one in my lifetime, but heaven forbid bringing one to a party or giving one as a gift.

It turns into the pass-from-familyto-family game or the beloved regifting game.

I’m a re-gifting champ (sorry friends, I’m sure I’ve never done that to you), but no one will want to get rid of this creamy cheesecake filling combined with the candied fruit and spices. I use gingersnaps for the crust, which helps bump up the spice factor and complements the chewy fruit to a T. The real complement to this tasty treat is a nice snifter of brandy. Many fruitcakes are soaked in brandy or rum, but I find it more enjoyable to drink the brandy than have it in the cheesecake — there’s a shocker — but I have had a fruitcake from the Caribbean where I could smell the rum from my mailbox, and brother, it was delicious.

So feel free to soak your fruit in some spirits before you add it to the filling. This might just guarantee your cheesecake fruitcake does not become the re-gifting joke of the season. And if it does, well, drink your brandy and don’t share; that oughta hit ’em where it hurts. Ahhh, my sharing holiday spirit is in full swing.

Now follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Fruitcake Cheesecake 1 1/2 cups crushed gingersnaps (about 20-25 whole gingersnaps) 3 tbsp. sugar 3 tbsp. butter, melted 3 (8 oz.) packages of softened cream cheese 3/4 cup of sugar 1 tbsp. lemon juice 3 large eggs 2 tbsp. flour 2 tsp. vanilla 1 1/2 cups candied fruits (you can find in produce department) 1 cup walnuts Mix gingersnap crumbs, butter and sugar, press into 9-inch springform pan (wrap bottom and side of pan in foil). Bake in preheated 325-degree oven for 10 minutes.

Take out and set aside. Keep oven on.

Combine cream cheese, sugar and lemon juice, mix until smooth.

(You can use hand mixer or food processor.) Add eggs one at a time and mix. Add vanilla and flour. Make sure batter is smooth and creamy. Fold in candied fruit and walnuts. Pour over top of baked crust. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until edges just start to crack and center is still jiggly. Take out and let cool five to 10 minutes. Run a sharp knife gently around edge of cake to loosen from pan. Let cool completely. Refrigerate to keep nice and firm.

When ready to serve, set on serving platter and release spring form.

Dust with powdered sugar. Serve with whipped cream and garnish with bits of the candied fruit if desired. Enjoy!

Lunch money Local nonprofit Community Food Share, now in its 29th year of providing meals to the needy, has received a $25,000 grant from the Amgen Foundation for general operating expenses.

“The Amgen Foundation has been generously supporting Community Food Share since 1996,” says Jim Baldwin, CEO of Community Food Share. “We have experienced a 15 percent increase in food distribution over this period in 2009, as unemployment remains high. For every dollar donated, we can distribute four meals. This funding from the Amgen Foundation in Colorado will help us provide 100,000 meals.”

Community Food Share distributes food to those in need in Boulder and Broomfield counties through a network of more than 50 member agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and emergency food box programs, as well as through several direct service programs targeting at-risk populations.

All food is distributed free of charge.

Food drive on the parkway Meadows on the Parkway Shopping Center is joining Community Food Share in helping to end hunger in Boulder and Broomfield counties by hosting a Community Food Drive.

On Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the merchants in the Meadows on the Parkway Shopping Center are asking the public to join their efforts to make a difference in the lives of those struggling to feed their families this holiday season.

High-octane hit

aster is a throwback to the action films of the 1970s, from the production color schemes to the film stock and camera angles utilized by cinematographer Michael Grady. If you’re not familiar with classics like Shaft, The French Connection, Dirty Harry, Enter the Dragon and the original Walking Tall, however, you might find yourself a bit confused by the unrelentingly serious and aggressive feel of the film.

There are no humorous interludes, not much of a love interest, just a story of revenge.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays Driver, a tough-as-nails hoodlum we first meet on the day he’s being released after 10 years in a maximum security prison. Upon release he runs a few miles into town because there’s no one at the prison gates to meet him. From his first minutes of freedom, he’s focused on tracking down the crooks who double-crossed his gang, killing his much-loved kid brother and leaving him bleeding to death.

Billy Bob Thornton plays the policeman trying to track down Driver, a role he’s played in countless films.

He’s an imperfect slob, creatively named Cop, but his relationship with Driver proves surprisingly complex as their cat-and-mouse game defines the tension of the film.

er genre trope), and it’s his younger partner, Cicero (Carla Gugino) who is the most straightforward, unambiguous character in the film. She’s tough, persistent, and furious that she’s been saddled with lazy slacker Cop on her case due to department politics.

Plot isn’t the strong point of Faster, with some gaping issues like the puzzle of how a two-bit hood assembled his neatly typed list of the group that killed Driver’s beloved brother.

Deathly boredom

fter six successful films in the Harry Potter franchise, the setup for the final showdown between Potter and his archenemy, Voldemort, should have been an easy winner. That’s why Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 proves such a disappointment.

Prior to Deathly Hallows: Part 1, one of the best things about the Harry Potter films was that they worked as standalone movies, entertaining, exciting and with stories that let Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) overcome challenges and mature as a courageous young man. If you’d seen the previous films in the series, the story worked even better, as you could share the adolescent journey of Potter and his pals Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) as the epic tale of good vs. evil progressed.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, however, is a tediously slow chase film where the heroes hide from Voldemort’s minions by camping in various isolated locations while trying to track down the magical objects that make Voldemort indestructible.

The film is about the challenges of the adolescent characters, including the still-unresolved, complicated romantic triangle between Harry, Hermione and Ron. As actors, they’ve all grown in their craft and their performances are nuanced and thoughtful, but weak material makes for a slow film.

Adding confusion to the story, movie-star handsome hit man Killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) has been hired to track down and kill Driver. Killer is a perfectionist hit man who does the work for the excitement of the chase, and he’s shocked when Driver proves hard to kill, whining to his gorgeous girlfriend Lily (Maggie Grace) when his attempts fail.

The film is ultimately a three-way chase between Thornton as Cop, Jackson-Cohen as Killer and Johnson as Driver, and it’s satisfying in that light. There’s no deep meaning, no romantic interest, and barely any time for character development, but as in the ’70s action films, Faster is about the chase, about the protagonist unraveling the conspiracy and avenging the murder of his dearly departed brother.

This is not a complicated film. I’m an unabashed action film fan. I like the genre and the simple storyline, revenge and redemption, earnest criminals caught up in difficult situations, forced to find their own solutions. If there’s some collateral damage along the way, all will be forgiven as the ultimate denouement is unveiled. If that sounds appealing, you’ll definitely want to catch Faster on a big screen.

The world has become a far more dangerous place, with Death Eaters taking over both the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. At times there’s an Orwellian sense to the film, particularly in the scenes where Harry and pals sneak into the Ministry to encounter Nazi-like thought police.

One of my favorite parts was a rather odd animated sequence that told the story of the Deathly Hallows, a series of three magical objects (the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone and the Invisibility

Cloak) that are Voldemort’s ultimate goal, even as Harry and pals seek the Horcruxes to try and defeat him. Animated by Ben Hibon, the shadow-puppet sequence still seemed like it’d be a better fit in a Don Quixote film.

How much of the blame for Deathly Hallows: Part 1 lies with director David Yates or screenwriter Steve Kloves, and how much should be assigned to J. K. Rowling, whose series peaked prior to the release of her last book? Just as The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was the weakest book in the Narnia series and produced a weak film, the overly long 784-page book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is also slow, often boring and unsatisfying (with an unnecessary epilogue that this reviewer and fan dearly hopes they omit from the second part of the film).

If you’re a Potter fan, you’ve already seen the film and probably found it a delightful opportunity to catch up with not just Harry, Ron and Hermione, but the Weasley family, Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) and Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson) and hiss at evildoers Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), the over-the-top Bellatrix (Helena Bonham Carter) and Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). From a purely cinematic perspective, however, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 just doesn’t work as a standalone film and won’t be enjoyable to anyone other than Potter fans.

In 2009 NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system.
