About Best of Boulder

W

elcome to our 23rd annual Best of Boulder™ publication. Just a reminder to everyone, the winners on the following pages have been chosen by our readers via our reader survey, not by Boulder Weekly staff. Once again, we’d like to kick things off by thanking the many thousands of you who took the time to fill out this year’s survey because without your participation, BW’s Best of Boulder™, with its highly coveted “Best Of” awards, would simply not be possible. Every year someone points out that every business in Boulder County is not on the survey and they want to know why that is. The simple answer is there are far too many businesses — tens of thousands — to put them all on our survey. So we have developed what we think is a fair process for getting on the ballot (meaning, listed as one of the multiple-choice options in any given category). Just like winning, getting on the ballot is also determined by our readers. Each year we go through the ballot, question by question, to add and subtract nominees on the basis of past support from voters. If a nominee received little support from voters during the previous year, we might decide to remove them from contention; if a nominee received significant support from voters during the previous year, they will remain on the ballot. Most importantly, we review the all-important write-in votes from the previous year and add nominees to the survey that received significant support. In fact, we give out an award: Write-In Winner, to those businesses

SPIRIT HOUND DISTILLERY OWNER CRAIG ENGELHORN AND BARTENDER SARAH CURRENT

receiving the most write-in support in their category. This year’s Write-In Winners will automatically be listed on next year’s survey. Our aim is to present the top nominees in each category, and we engage in a meticulous review to create the survey each year. This review is conducted solely on the basis of whom our readers voted for in the past. And just to be clear, whether or not a nominee is a BW advertiser is not part of the equation. However, as our publisher likes to point out, the very nature of advertising does come into play here. When a business advertises in Boulder Weekly, they enter into a relationship with our readers. More often than not, this relationship breeds good will and familiarity, and when our readers take the survey they are more likely to vote for a business with whom they have a relationship, just as they are more likely to choose a restaurant, café, summer camp or bike shop that they have a relationship with when making a purchase. But that’s as far as

it goes. When it comes time to tabulate the results, we give the awards to whomever our readers voted for in the greatest numbers, and we construct the survey each year on the same basis. So that’s how it works, time to get on with the fun. You’ll notice a few staff picks mixed in with our readers’ survey results and they are clearly marked as such. These are thrown in to let us give a shout out to a great business for something that doesn’t fall into one of the established “Best of” categories or just to add a little humor. You’ll also notice reader comments sprinkled throughout this magazine. The comments are examples of what our readers had to say as they filled out their surveys. Yes, we read all 1-2,000 of them every year and then choose a few that tickled our fancy to publish. Congrats to all the winners. Boulder County’s quality of life is truly enhanced by the presence of your businesses and efforts.

More than two decades later, and Pete’s is still Boulder’s favorite burrito stop. With a variety of options from rice and beans to potatoes with green chili or queso, along with any choice of meat and other toppings, these burritos are stuffed to the brim, full of flavor, and the perfect antidote to society’s decay. And let’s not forget they mix all the ingredients together before wrapping them in a fresh tortilla so you get every ingredient in every bite. hen gluten absolutely cannot be in your meal, it’s heavenly to walk into a restaurant and know that you can order anything — anything at all — off of the menu. Fresh Thymes Eatery not only offers a completely gluten-free menu, they dish out gluten-free food with bold, exciting flavors. Try Fresh Thymes’ Dragon tacos, with blue corn tortillas, Korean marinated skirt steak, house-made kimchi, carrot cucumber slaw and Sriracha aioli. Or put that gluten-free menu to the test with a pizza… maybe the Calabrese Salumi, with Creminelli salami, marinara, fennel, onion, pepperoncini and whole milk mozzarella. Who needs gluten?

Blackbelly is the only whole-animal butchery in Boulder. That’s alright with us, because it has everything we could ask for, including a world-class charcuterie program. Head butcher Nate Singer is a maestro. His charcuterie includes dry-fermented salami, European-style whole-cured muscles like prosciutto and coppa, and plenty of sausages, paté and terrines. If you want exceptional cured and aged meats, or if you’re looking for hard-to-find charcuterie, Blackbelly is the place. And Singer’s commitment to responsible, local sources of meat means you’ll be doing your part in building a better food system.

Sushi Chef GHANA GURUNG – JAPANGO 1136 Pearl St., 303-938-0330, bouldergjapango.com Sitting at the sushi bar at a Japanese restaurant is most often the result of a long wait for a table. But since discovering Ghana Gurung, we have started reserving our favorite spot at the north end of Japango’s sushi bar so we can witness up-close Ghana’s artistry as a sushi chef, enjoy the extraordinary service he provides and hear stories of his native Nepal. Ghana is not only a world-class sushi chef, but once you get to know him, you may find your sushi order arriving before you’ve had a chance to fill out the form. He has a knack for remembering your favorites and preferences, and he has a winning personality — and the smile to go with it — that serves to melt away the sometimes-intimidating aspect of ordering directly from the sushi chef.

ince the day in 1997 when OSKAR BLUES GRILL Oskar Blues Grill & & BREW BARTENDER ALEXIS BLAKELY Brew opened it doors and TAKES A NACHO started serving up homeBREAK. cookin’ in Lyons, this place has been a Northern Colorado dining destination. This restaurant and music venue was a hit with our readers from the start, but when the first batch of Dale’s Pale Ale got brewed up down in the restaurant’s basement, well, the rest is history. Oskar Blues may now be one of the nation’s premier breweries, but our readers still love the lively little restaurant in Lyons that launched the whole operation.

here’s a time and a place for everything in life — thankfully, in the case of Cosmo’s Pizza, the time is always and the place is anywhere. With options for dozens of veggie and meat topping combinations done up on consistently fresh and chewy crusts, a slice of Cosmo’s pizza is as perfect at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday as it is at 2 a.m. on a Friday. Enjoy a traditional topping configuration (Hawaiian, BBQ chicken, Greek veggie, among many more) or a custom-made pie hot out of Cosmo’s wood-fired ovens, and then savor it cold from the fridge the morning after. Any way, any day, Cosmo’s pizza delivers.

here are a lot of reasons Mountain Sun Pubs & Breweries are kid-friendly. For instance, parents get to drink great beer while their kids play board games, eat burgers and chow down on the best fries anywhere. OK, the beer isn’t really kid-friendly but parents get why Mountain Sun spots are so family friendly: it’s just the nature of the place. Everybody’s happy, and kids just add to the atmosphere. Sourdough Loaf THE DIAZ FARM 2818 Jay Road, Boulder, 720-454-5475, thediazfarm.com If you haven’t been out to The Diaz Farm in North Boulder yet, you’re missing out. The urban farm sells a variety of produce grown on-site, as well as eggs gathered from the chicken coop out back. There’s also a food truck parked in the driveway, which turns that produce and some choice meats into unforgettable burritos, tacos, gorditas and quesadillas. But amid all that goodness, you might forget to take home a loaf of sourdough bread, made on-site with local grains. The crumb is ridiculously moist, robustly flavorful and the crust is perfectly cooked and crunchy. The bread is baked daily on the farm, and you can even buy into a bread share, which gives you access to the original loaf plus jalapeño cheddar, rosemary potato, cranberry walnut and more flavors. he value of breakfast has never been lost on brothers Jon and Adam Schlegel. It’s the meal that marks a new day, a time to pause before reentering the world and, as many psychologists claim, the best time to be creative. It makes sense, therefore, for the Schlegel brothers to embody a familiar-yet-creative vibe throughout their Snooze: an A.M. Eatery menus. Such ingenuity manifests itself nowhere better than in their pancake line, a range that takes you from pineapple upside-down pancakes to sweet potato cakes, and from coco-nana cakes to blueberry Danish pancakes. Our readers say opting for the flight — where you get to pick three different Snooze pancakes — is the best way to start your day. FROZEN YOGURT

O

ver the course of 26 years, Carelli’s went from humble Italian sub shop to our readers’ favorite Italian food in all of Boulder. This place creates classic dishes with fresh ingredients, like hearty zuppa minestrone, perfect for warming bones on cold winter nights, and a caprese salad to cool down warm summer evenings. On that first crisp day of autumn, try the hearty, housemade spaghetti Bolognese. The point is Carelli’s has an extensive menu of traditional Italian small plates, salads, pastas, sandwiches, pizzas and desserts that’s perfect for any season.

Rotisserie chicken, portobello mushrooms, hot dogs, mortadella, artichokes, smoked brisket and creamy sesame shiitake dressing are but a few of the items you can put on a sandwich. he food at The Sink is so good, Barack Obama made a surprise visit to the 96-year-old establishment in 2012. He ordered the Sinkza Pizza, loaded with pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers, black olives, red onion and mozzarella. That was a fine executive decision if you want our opinion. Barry had possibly heard tell of The Sink’s signature Ugly Crust. This big, thick, floppy pizza crust is so popular, the folks behind Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives even made a stop by Boulder to have a slice of the Buddha Basil pie, with pesto-marinara sauce topped with fresh basil, artichoke hearts, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, tofu and mozzarella. It featured a live bluegrass band, led by Forster, and a projection of song lyrics to help folks participate, even if they weren’t familiar with the song. This community sing along went over so well, Forster hosted another Hippy Bluegrass Church on Easter Sunday, 2019. With voices rising up together, young and old, it was clear that the community was hungry for a chance to connect and celebrate together in song. We hope Forster makes this a staple event on eTown’s calendar. Times are dark; let’s sing together more.

t Ozo Coffee Company, coffee is more a way of life than a morning beverage. There’s an art to roasting the perfect cup of coffee, and it starts with sustainably sourcing expertly grown and harvested coffee beans. Ozo sources beans from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, Ethiopia and more, and offers roasts that range from the welcome and approachable to the lively. Ozo’s Lab and Training Center even offers business trainings for industry newcomers with their staff and wholesale accounts, as well as public coffee education courses. These folks know coffee.

To the undiscerning palate, it might not sound appetizing, but bloody marys are special, bringing back memories of late nights requiring this classic hangover cure, or memories of long brunches with good friends. BW staff can’t help but recommend the Cajun bloody marys at Lucile’s Creole Cafe in both Boulder and Longmont. The spices are just right, especially when paired with a meal off the stellar menu. It’s also truly an all-around entertainment venue featuring live music of all genres, comedy, spoken word, conferences and private celebrations in addition to films. And now, The Lounge next door is serving McDevitt Tacos. So, head on over for a few tacos and a drink during happy hour before the movie, and you’ll know why our readers call this their favorite movie house.

But in 2018, the band had to make a difficult decision: with pressing family matters making it hard to tour and carve out time to make new music, the band decided to put family first by taking a hiatus from Elephant Revival. They still individually continue to advocate for public lands and other social justice causes, and they still participate in their annual Trail Revival project, which works in conjunction with the state of Colorado to clean up and restore trails within the state’s public lands. The Media Archeology Lab (MAL) has a pretty woke motto: “The past must be lived so that the present can be seen.” Whoa, right? This research lab and hands-on museum uses fully functional vintage technology to answer questions about what the future of media might look like. Ever wonder what the world’s first portable computer, the Osbourne 1, looks like? Well, it weighs 25 pounds and you can find it at the MAL. Are you an audiophile? The MAL has a wicked collection of audio materials ranging from a 1914 Edison Diamond Disc recording of “Medley of American War Songs” to a cassette tape of R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People from 1992. The lab hosts artist and scholar residencies and exhibitions, and visitors to the museum are encouraged to play. Check the website for visiting hours.

hat a treat it is to have the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder County. Our readers love checking out the Dairy’s various cultural offerings, such as films, theater, speakers and art exhibits. The space is welcoming, the talent level high and the galleries and films are carefully curated. our core beliefs have defined the Dawson School since its inception, namely the values of respect, compassion, courage and integrity. In offering an array of challenging courses, a robust selection of after-school programs and initiatives and a competitive sports environment, students return to these four pillars every step of the way. Dawson School’s supportive educational environment encourages students to pursue their dreams. And the sports programs build community while teaching fairness and responsibility. he Colorado Athletic Club — Boulder is much more than a gym — you might think of it more as a social club. Sure, they’ve got executive locker rooms that’ll make an NBA player say, “Niiiiiiiice,” and yeah, they offer expert personal training, top-of-the-line equipment, the hottest fitness classes and not one but two heated saline pools, but what sets the Colorado Athletic Club apart from other gyms is the environment. When you’re a member, you’re family, so why not go to one of their happy hour outings, or on a hike up the Royal Arch Trail? You’ll make new friends and find your growth edge at Colorado Athletic Club. BEST OF BOULDER COUNTY ’19

Get Salted Breathe Easier Skin Conditions

• Acne • Eczema • Psoriasis Salt Therapy works wonders for the skin. The particles increase movement in the skin ion channels, which encourages regeneration of the skin. It also balances skin pH, reduces inflammation, and kills bacteria.

Respiratory Issues • Asthma • Allergies/Hay Fever • Chronic Bronchitis • Cystic Fibrosis • Emphysema • Sinus and Ear Infections Salt therapy has many positive effects on the respiratory tract. The salt particles break apart congestion in the airways, reduce inflammation of the bronchial tubes, and kill bacteria in infections. These benefits help to treat respiratory symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

e’ve said it before, but we can’t stop feeling starstruck: Kevin Costner loves Boulder Eyes/Beyer LASIK. He heard Dr. Beyer was one of the best LASIK surgeons in the country, so he flew out from California to have his surgery right here in Boulder. He even recommended his son do the same (which he did). But the best testimonial of all is from our readers. They’ve crowned Eyes/Beyer LASIK the best LASIK in town for years now. They’ve been in business for more than 20 years, and they don’t just do LASIK. Boulder Eyes/Beyer LASIK has licensed optometrists on staff who treat many patients for years before they decide to have LASIK surgery. It’s a big deal for your doctor to truly know your eyes before recommending LASIK.

EACH YEAR WE METICULOUSLY REVIEW THE WRITE-INS AND UPDATE THE LIST TO INCLUDE THOSE BUSINESSES THAT RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT WRITE-IN SUPPORT IN THE MOST RECENT SURVEY. SO, IF YOU WANT TO SEE SOMETHING ADDED TO THE LIST, WRITE IN YOUR SELECTIONS AND THEY WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR. IT’S THAT SIMPLE. WE SHOULD ALSO MENTION THAT IN 2018 — AND THIS IS THE CASE AGAIN THIS YEAR — WE INITIATED A WRITE-IN WINNER FOR MANY CATEGORIES, WHICH SERVES TO RECOGNIZE BUSINESSES THAT RECEIVED A LOT OF WRITE-IN SUPPORT.

ou’ve got to love a law firm that has a stated philosophy of: “It is only worthwhile practicing law in a firm to which we would enthusiastically refer our parents, children, and friends. We must provide high quality legal services at reasonable rates. We are committed to remain on the cutting edge of technology to better serve our clients.” And at Boulder’s Frascona, Joiner, Goodman & Greenstein, P.C., clients come with all kinds of legal needs. If it requires an attorney, chances are these folks can help you out. They handle all aspects of business law, real estate law, civil litigation, estate planning, divorce and family law, trust and estate administration, employment law, taxation, foreclosure, association law, construction law, water law, oil and gas law, and intellectual property law. And if it isn’t listed here, our readers tell us chances are this firm can still help, so give them a call and find out. BEST OF BOULDER COUNTY ’19

TAYLOR MOVING AND STORAGE, LLC

T

here are a few things — like all-inclusive hourly rates, professional disassembly and reassembly teams, and interstate travel — that we suspect our readers are impressed with in regards to Taylor Moving and Storage, LLC. Its fleet of hard-working, experienced and reliable movers eases the stress of transition that would otherwise be mentally and physically exhausting. Allinclusive packages are available for folks looking to have movers take care of everything, but for the do-it-yourselfers out there, there are a few tiered options, too, like renting trucks, equipment or requesting guidance.

Place to Shop to Kill a River VARIOUS LOCATIONS AROUND BOULDER COUNTY

ATLAS FLOORING INC.

T

here’s something endearing about a decades-old local business that’s still at the top of the game. Atlas Flooring Inc. has been providing Boulder County homes, businesses, stores, restaurants and everything in between with quality carpets, tiles, wood floors and more for over 50 years. The go-to place for contractors, designers and do-it-yourselfers, its inventory is hard to beat along the Front Range, and the store displays thousands of samples with unique options and styles for special order projects. There’s a reason Atlas is our readers’ choice for best flooring once again.

BEST OF BOULDER COUNTY ’19

You know the old saying: “Kill two birds with one stone.” Well, that saying has never been more applicable than when you shop at Walmart. (Editor’s note: If you’re reading this blurb and struggling to feed your family and pay rent or medical bills, please ignore this political commentary that is aimed at those whose lives afford them the luxury of actually choosing where they spend their money. You do what you have to and good luck.) Now, where were we? Oh yes, shopping at Walmart. Not only does giving this place your money kill off local businesses, it’s indirectly on its way to wiping out the Colorado River. The Walton Family Trust (the people behind Walmart), which obviously exists because so many people have given their cash to Walmart, is currently impact investing (along with other billionaire opportunists) in Colorado River water and infrastructure. The intent is to make sure cities along the river will continue to have enough water to grow, even if it means others who don’t have the money will lose out on this water sweepstakes for profit. So why haven’t you heard about this? Because the Walton’s are smart. They are giving money to all the newsrooms, academic centers and environmental groups who should be sounding the alarm. The hundreds of millions the Trust is spending to buy this silence is a penance to the profits they hope to eventually make. Shop wisely. I

Hurdle’s Jewelry has been making and/or selling jewelry in this County since 1947. That’s 72 years-worth of gold, silver, diamonds, watches and other sparklies for you math-challenged folks. In all seriousness, since Chester and Bernice Hurdle moved to Boulder from Missouri and bought the local jewelry store nearly three quarters of a century ago, folks around here have been buying their fine jewelry from any one of three generations of the Hurdle family. If you drop in these days, be sure to say hello to Keith Hurdle, the current gem-stone patriarch. SEE WHAT OUR SATISFIED CUSTOMERS SAY... Since Bestway Insulation came to my home and insulated it, it’s been much warmer and there are no more drafts. My heating bill for the month of December was under $60, where before it was at least 3 times more. They were very professional, courteous, respectful, and polite. I would highly recommend Bestway to everyone wanting have their home properly insulated. We love this company! Wonderful customer service, good prices, and family owned too. Always available to talk to and willing to offer advice and multiple options. Bestway did a great job on insulating our older home in Denver. There has been a big difference in heating costs! I would highly recommend them for your insulating needs! Bestway insulation is the BEST! Reliable, trustworthy, cost effective and very knowlegeable. he age of #MeToo and the Women’s March has brought greater awareness to the gender gap and workplace discrimination that a lot of women experience every day. While these movements have shed light on the fact that we still have a long way to go, it’s important to highlight the success of women when we see it, showing what’s possible when women are given the chance to lead, and the vital part they play in creating a thriving community. The “Blissful Sisters,” triplets Jessica, Jill and Jennifer Emich, have long contributed their wit, wisdom and talent to the Boulder community through their restaurants. Their latest iteration, Shine Restaurant & Potions Bar, offers extensive menus, community events, Shine potions and herbal tonics. The future is female.

T

he story of The Natural Funeral begins with Karen van Vuuren and Daniel Ziskin. While collaborating on ways to bring natural burial options to Boulder County, Karen, who is a natural deathcare educator, realized what the area really needed was a “green funeral home.” The two decided to create just that, a process more natural and sustainable than other funeral models currently available. It wasn’t long before Prescott Knock joined the team, adding more knowledge about end-of-life service possibilities and how to keep a sustainable, compassionate funeral ethos flourishing well into the future. 108 APRIL 25, 2019

BEST OF BOULDER COUNTY ’19

We recently discovered this huge store that has nearly everything you need for less money than what those items would cost nearly anywhere else. There are bicycles and toilet paper, lettuce, coffeepots, chairs, vacuum cleaners, shotguns, cameras, jewelry, lawnmowers, tools, guitars, clothing and lots of weird Japanese candy plus another 500,000,000 or so other products. It’s awesome, and it’s called Amazon.com. The only downside to this place is that the more you shop here, the smaller the tax base where you live gets. Shop a little more and our local schools get worse and unemployment goes up. Keep on saving pennies and shopping at your convenience and pretty soon there won’t be any place left to shop in your own hometown. But what the hell, who needs local businesses, tax revenues and jobs when you can have cool, big-ass drones dropping boxes of crap you don’t need on your porch? But aside from all that, it’s really a great shopping experience.

here’s an old saying, “Hydroponics is America’s future.” OK, we admit we just made that up, but the way this amazing process for making things grow is expanding and becoming more popular, it won’t be long until somebody actually makes that statement... and when they do, tell them you heard it here first. As the need to grow and produce plants and crops sustainably increases, hydroponics’ valuable role in that green process will continue to expand. And if you keep reading the word hydroponics in this blurb and you have no idea what we’re talking about, that’s just another reason why Way to Grow is such an important member of our business community. So whether you’re a beginner or an expert with a green thumb, Way to Grow has everything you need to be successful with hydroponics, including a friendly and really knowledgeable staff. So you’re biking up that hill, you know, that giant hill that hits you every time you try to bike southeast on the path adjacent to Highway 36, and you get a flat. A flat! Thankfully, we live in Boulder, where bike maintenance stands are as ubiquitous as kombucha taps and crystal shops. Just roll your wheels up to the top of the hill, and a set of bike tools and a pump await you, ready to help your ride stay alive.
