About Best of Boulder by Stewart Sallo, Publisher

W

elcome to Boulder Weekly’s 22nd annual Best of Boulder™. As publisher, I find the comments our readers post to be the most interesting part of our annual survey. I personally read each one of them, which took some time given that there were more than 1,200 comments written by our readers in this year’s survey (which gives you a clue as to how many ballots were cast; hint: the number of comments is a small fraction of the number of ballots we counted in determining this year’s winners). I wanted to write the introduction to this year’s edition for a couple of reasons. First, to say thank you to you, our readers, for making this year’s Best of Boulder our most successful ever. And I also wanted to take some time to explain exactly how our selection process works. Best of Boulder is a reader survey. This means that our readers alone decide who wins the most highly coveted “Best Of” awards in the area. I personally certify the results, and I can confirm that the awards are given solely on the basis of who receives the most votes from our readers. Admittedly, it’s a little more complicated than that. As a number of you have pointed out, getting on the ballot (meaning, being listed as one of the multiple-choice options in any given category) is essential to winning a Best of Boulder award. So, how are these decisions made and how can one become a nominee? Once again, as a reader survey, getting on the ballot is also determined by our readers. Each year we go through the ballot, question by question, to add and subtract nominees on the basis of past support from voters. If a nominee received little support from voters during the previous year, we might decide to remove them from contention; if a nominee received significant support from voters during the previous year, they will remain on the ballot. Most importantly, we review the all-important write-in votes from the previous year and add nominees to the survey that received significant support. In fact, last year we

RED ROCKS AMPHITHEATRE

rolled out a new award: Write-In Winner, which is given to those businesses receiving the most write-in support in their category. This year’s Write-In Winners will automatically be listed in the 2019 survey. Our aim is to present the top nominees in each category, and we engage in a meticulous review in creating the survey each year. Given that this review is conducted solely on the basis of whom our readers voted for in the past, whether or not a nominee is an advertiser is not part of the equation. However, the very nature of advertising comes into play here. When a business advertises in Boulder Weekly, they enter into a relationship with our readers. More often than not, this relationship breeds good will and familiarity, and when our readers take the survey they are more likely to vote for a business they have a relationship with, just as they are more likely to choose a restaurant, café, summer camp or bike shop that they have a relationship with when making a purchase. That’s how advertising works, folks, and in all honesty, we cheer when our advertisers win these awards because it means that their efforts to build their relationship with our readers are working. But that’s as far as it goes. When it comes time to tabulate the results, we give the awards to whomever our readers voted for in the greatest numbers, and we construct the survey each year on the same basis. I want to conclude by explaining the “TM”

symbol that we often place after Boulder Weekly’s tradename, Best of Boulder. This is the symbol for “trademark,” and it is a legal designation which signifies that Boulder Weekly has earned the exclusive use of the tradename, Best of Boulder. There are other surveys conducted in Boulder County each year, but there is only one Best of Boulder. But along with the rights Boulder Weekly enjoys in connection with the use of our tradename comes an obligation to uphold the highest level of integrity in how we conduct our annual survey and present the awards. In all aspects of how we conduct our media organization, we take an enormous amount of pride in upholding the highest levels of journalistic integrity, which has made Boulder Weekly one of the most decorated media organizations in the Rocky Mountain region for the past several years. Our Best of Boulder survey follows suit with the care that we give to all of our content. In a dynamic media landscape, we continue to be humbled by the loyalty shown to us by our readers, and we feel a deep responsibility to reciprocate that loyalty by delivering the best damn publications we possibly can. We understand that you have more options than ever, and we truly appreciate that you continue to choose Boulder Weekly, Best of Boulder and our other brands as a valued aspect of living in Boulder County. Now, on to the awards!

ou can put pretty much anything between two pieces of bread and call it a sandwich... just ask the guy we once saw eating bologna and Cheetos encased between two slices of white bread. But just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. Thankfully, the folks at Snarf’s Sandwiches know just what to sandwich between slices of bread to make the perfect meal. They know that provolone goes best with chicken salad and Swiss cheese with turkey. They make a mean Italian sandwich, and there’s even one featuring a hot dog. And if you can’t find something you like, choose from a variety of options to build your own.

If you don’t like doughnuts, then we’re going to need you to go ahead and close this edition of Best of Boulder, rent a cabin outside Rocky Mountain National Park for a week, and plan to do some hard thinking about your life and the choices that led to you not liking doughnuts. Alternatively, you could stop by OAK at fourteenth, which offers doughnuts that’ll win over even the most ardent skeptic. Pillowy, bready and sweet, these doughnuts come in rotating flavors, including maple glazes, toasted marshmallow and chocolate pistachio. And OAK even gives you the doughnut hole. Now if that’s not worth embracing, then we don’t know what is.

On top of that, Sweet Cow makes all of its ice cream in small batches, hand-crafted on-site and served fresh daily. And the final ingredient, according to the company? Love. ired of driving five hours to the border of New Mexico just to get some red chile, adovada and frybread? Well, good news: now there’s Santo. Chef Hosea Rosenberg (Blackbelly) opened Santo last year as an homage to his native northern New Mexico. The place, like Blackbelly before it, took off like gangbusters, and it’s poised to linger. There are so many things to try, so we won’t try to persuade you on certain dishes, but be prepared to go three courses deep and try everyone’s items at the table. OK, just one rec: the stacked blue-corn enchiladas are insane. So is the apple and green chile pie. And so is — OK, enough.

hile the recipes at Aloy Thai Cuisine are closely guarded, there’s no keeping secret how great the food is. Since coming to Boulder Valley more than 10 years ago, the mother/daughters team behind Aloy Thai Cuisine has been serving up farm-to-table, slow-cooked dishes using traditional family recipes and Thai spices. Plus, they are committed to the Boulder County way: healthy options for people with particular diets. Every dish is MSG-free, with coconut, gluten-free and vegetarian options. Certain ingredients, such as lemongrass, known for its anti-carcinogenic and stomachache relief properties, have been incorporated into the menu in a variety of dishes and teas. This place is so popular, they just opened a sister store in Denver.

Hard-to-Find Delicious Food BASTA 3601 Arapahoe Ave., 303-997-8775 Listen, you’re gonna circle The Peloton at least three times before you find Basta for the first time, but don’t give up. You’re going to find it and you’re going to be happy. Really, really happy. You’re going to indulge in fresh, in-house made burrata smothered in allium butter, garlic and sea salt as you sip a mind-blowing Sangiovese from Tuscany. Do not skip the burrata, we beg of you. We’d suggest getting some shigoku oysters, too. This is a wood-fire eatery, so pizza is a must. There are small plates of duck confit and geoduck risotto, and large plates of lamb shank and whole fish. You can’t try every delicious thing Basta offers in one visit, so you’re going to have to go back. And you’re probably going to miss your turn again, but once you know what you’re in for, you won’t be so frustrated trying to find it. 14 APRIL 26, 2018

t’s hard to beat a vegetarian restaurant with its own local farm where fresh produce is grown. Which is why Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant is our readers’ favorite spot to find an extensive menu of meat-free food. Serving brunch, lunch and dinner, the creative folks at Leaf make a plethora of veggie-forward dishes like avocado tartare, jackfruit-carnitas enchiladas, and spaghetti squash peanut noodles, to name a few. But it all depends on the season, as the restaurant embraces “the cycle of cuisine from seed to plate.” These folks even started their own Three Leaf Farm in Lafayette, which supplies the restaurant with organic produce, herbs and eggs.

T

his isn’t the first time Chez Thuy Vietnamese Restaurant finds itself in our Best of Boulder pages — since its inception in 1993, our readers have voted it one the region’s best Asian fusion restaurants plenty of times. That’s likely due to the expansive lunch and dinner menus. There’s a robust sampling of veggie- and spice-centric South Asian fare, with a menu large enough that you can try something new every time you go. When you go for lunch, try topping off your meal with a classic Vietnamese coffee, and for dinner, don’t shy from any of the traditional Vietnamese appetizers or soups alongside your stir fry, pho, hot pot or curry.

hen it comes to baking, ingredients matter. Moxie Bread Co. uses only organic heirloom wheat flour for its sweet and savory goodies because, according to the company, these heirloom grain varieties are digested more easily than other modern wheats. Good, because the more efficiently we digest, the sooner we can go back for more, right? Walk into Moxie and you might believe you’ve been magically transported to a patisserie somewhere in northwest France, where fig and chocolate croissants, egg pastries and bubbling-over muffin crumbles delight the senses. As our cuisine editor wrote in 2015, “It’s what would typically be considered a high-end Euro-style bakery in the U.S., turned casual and authentic.” But we’re not this bakery’s only fans: Moxie’s Andy Clark was a 2018 James Beard Award semifinalist in the category of Outstanding Baker. Think about that on your way to get your next baked-goods fix.

In 1958, the famous hickory sauce Sink Burger was created, and it’s been a mainstay ever since. Robert Redford was a janitor at The Sink a full eight years before John, Paul, Ringo and George ever invaded the States. The ’60s and ’70s still decorate the walls at this historic Hill establishment, and it’s been said that without The Sink, there wouldn’t be a Hill. Our readers must agree because they keep voting this place the Hill’s best year after year. So whether it’s burgers, pizza, a cold brew or an extra large portion of nostalgia, this place has it all.

oo-wee, we can’t help but whole-heartedly approve of our reader’s selection of Efrain’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina as a supreme vendor of Mexican cuisine. They serve everything you could want in a sit-down Mexican joint: gut-busting burritos, spicy chile verde, dynamite enchiladas and robust tacos. Seriously, the chile verde is so good and so hot, you’ll be on a roller coaster of heat-induced emotion. The drinks are excellent companions to the fare, with a wide selection of freshly made margaritas. And if you’re feeling like your sweet tooth needs a little attention, pillowy sopapillas drizzled with honey and cinnamon sugar are the way to go.

n Japanese, zanmai can mean “ambition” but it also translates to “indulgence.” At Sushi Zanmai, the ambitious chefs deliver indulgent sushi our readers continually say is the best. There are classics like nigiri (raw fish over rice) and sashimi (raw fish, no rice). There are simple maki rolls like salmon with avocado or the beloved California roll. But there’s also extravagant specialty rolls such as the Dragon-Z (eel and shrimp tempura) and the Galaxy roll (eel, spicy tuna and roe). No matter what direction you choose, you’re sure to walk away satisfied.

Place to Play Real-Life Frogger THE MEDIAN ON SOUTH BROADWAY AT TABLE MESA SHOPPING CENTER Nothing focuses the mind like the awareness that to trip or slip off of the tiny concrete ridge you’re standing on would likely result in death. So just what is this daily death-defying ritual being practiced by dozens of South Boulder residents? Is it some Mr. Miyagi experiment to prep us for our next match against the evil dojo down the street? Heck no. It’s the South Boulder migration for sustenance, aka real-life Frogger. Lucky’s, King Soopers and a host of restaurants and coffee shops are all located on the West side of Broadway in the Table Mesa Shopping Center, while a whole bunch of hungry folks live or work just a stone’s throw away on the East side of that bust street. If you want food, it’s either a three-block walk to the corner or a 150-foot sprint across Broadway that, when traffic’s heavy, could qualify as an American Ninja event. To be successful, the hungry participant waits for a small break in traffic then sprints to the two-foot wide median with a hump in the middle, jumping onto the ridge without flying past into the other two lanes of traffic. Next you balance on the tiny ridge while cars fly by at 50 miles an hour in front and behind you. And finally, when the traffic gods allow, you finish off the other two lanes as fast as you can. Repeat this Frogger game on your return trip and you are rewarded with a plastic container of tuna fish. Hardly seems worth it if you think about it. 28 APRIL 26, 2018

eally, truly, honestly: Lucky Pie Pizza & Tap House is as kid-friendly as a restaurant can get. Its Louisville location not only shares a building with Sweet Cow Ice Cream, but also sports a play area for kiddos to run around and, you know, be kids. There’s plant life and vegetables growing, so the value of local food can seep into their growing brains via osmosis as they chase their buddies. Not to mention Lucky Pie’s friendly staff, lively atmosphere and kid-friendly menu that make it a great place to take the whole family for a night out.

hy fuss over dining decisions when Backcountry Pizza & Tap House is an option? They have everything you could want: fresh pizza with lots of options for toppings, well-made pub grub, salads, soups and of course, a world-class selection of beers to try. Seriously, that variety of brew is virtually unparalleled in the state, let alone the community of Nederland. Best of all, you can tailor a trip to Backcountry to fit your needs; pick up a slice on the go or stop in at happy hour to sample a few options.

ho doesn’t like tacos? They are the world’s most perfect food; some may even say they are a way of life. They are portable. They have the ultimate balance of meat, carbs, dairy and vegetables. You can indulge, eating more than one without feeling guilty. And you can find them almost anywhere. Still, our readers say that the tacos at T|ACO are the best around. Offering myriad combinations of tortillaencased ingredients, the menu is a smorgasbord of flavors. From traditional Mexican street tacos to creative combinations dubbed “north of the border,” find a taco and a good time for everyone at T|ACO.

O

ur readers know the story of how the beautiful Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse came to reside near Boulder Creek downtown; how more than 40 artisans in Tajikistan (including in one of our sister cities, Dushanbe) created the hand-carved and hand-painted ceiling, tables, stools, columns and exterior ceramic panels; and how the tiles outside depict a “Tree of Life,” and the central pool inside features seven hammered copper sculptures by Ivan Milashevich. But, honestly, our readers didn’t even have to know any of that to know that the Dushanbe Teahouse has the best ambiance around. You can just feel it when you walk in the room.

Maybe it’s because this community known as the “town with grit” since the 2013 flood is also synonymous with enjoying the great outdoors, be it wading in the river, hiking a mountain trail or taking in tunes at Planet Bluegrass. All that recreation works up an appetite and so both locals and visitors are thankful for Oskar Blues Grill and Brew. While the decor has changed over the years — it’s now an unpretentious classic Italian atmosphere — the principles that have always guided the restaurant have stayed the same: Food made with the freshest and finest-quality ingredients, served with exceptional customer service, equals success. here’s almost too much to like about Sushi Zanmai. The sushi, the atmosphere, the drinks... they’re all primo, a-number-one at this famed Spruce Street establishment. We heard it from a guy selling little umbrella hats, the kind with a band that affixes around your dome and then provides cooling shade for half of your face. We were heading out to Boulder Reservoir for a day by the water, and thought to bring a stupid old baseball hat. But, umbrella man said, “You can wear an umbrella hat not only at the Res, but at black-tie functions, job interviews, grand openings of zoos, empty playgrounds and, yes, even on the set of SlapChop infomercials.” What’d we tell him? “You had us at the Res.”

Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, right here in Colorado, offers all the frills (think white table linens and tiered serving plates) of an elegant afternoon tea. At all other times, they offer a long list of hand-plucked teas, with white, green, oolong and black varieties. Tea is a 5,000-year-old drink and drinking it in the iconic Dushanbe building imported from Tajikistan takes the cake.

We prefer the “The Beast of Burden,” mixing Tin Cup Whiskey with lemon juice in a way that is faintly reminiscent of our old college fare, but includes sophisticated additives such as agave syrup, smoked orange bitters and a splash of soda, all pre-mixed and easily served on repeat. Ingenious.

hat makes a great margarita? Well, it starts off with fresh lime juice, a bit of orange liqueur and a splash of simple syrup. Oh, then there’s good tequila. Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant is serving up our readers’ favorite margaritas because they stick to the recipe, simple as the syrup that goes in them. But they also add strawberry, mango and manberry (mango plus strawberry) if you want. Maybe a spot of muddled jalapeno to heat up your marg, or a bit of Grand Marnier and an olive for a martini twist. It’s hard to improve on perfection, but the Rio has done it with their Front Rangefamous margs.

he smoothie: As fun to say as it is to drink. The best part is, it’s a relatively nutritious snack or meal. Our readers say Jamba Juice is their go-to spot for smoothies and juices. Their expansive menu and unique creations likely call out to our local juiceheads. You can’t beat the consistency that Jamba Juice brings to the smoothie world. Whether you’re craving something after a workout, a light breakfast or a sweet treat, Jamba Juice is the place to go to have fruits, vegetables, grasses, powders and more put into a blender, blended, poured into a cup and then consumed.

n Sanskrit, Bhakti loosely translates to “devotion through social action.” When Brook Eddy, Bhakti Chai’s mastermind, stumbled across this concept while traveling in India, she was immediately attracted to its potential. Sharing cups of spicy Indian chai with local families and communities, she heard story after story about how such social action changed lives and communities. When Eddy returned to the U.S., she brought with her the idea of Bhakti, along with serious tea-brewing skills, and founded a tea company in the concept’s honor. A portion of all proceeds are donated to social action campaigns. Find concentrates, readyto-drink bottles or dry tea bags at grocery stores around the county, or visit one of the many cafes that carry Bhakti chais to indulge in the sweet-spicy drinks’ taste and feel-good social impact.

And one of the perks of having so much open space? Getting to experience the natural world and encounter wildlife on the regular. Contrary to popular belief, owls are most active at dawn or dusk, a great time of day to take a quick jaunt around the Warembourg Fishing Pond in Louisville. But what exactly makes Spirit Hound so good at what they do? According to the folks who own it, “Spirit Hound embodies the enterprising spirit of the old West, a passion for fine spirits, and our own discoveries in how to distill beverages with high quality and uniquely drinkable character. Our spirits are made with local Colorado ingredients such as freshly-picked juniper berries.” We’re not sure how you get the spirit of the old West into a bottle, but our readers tell us these folks have managed to do just that, and it tastes as good as it sounds.

The specially trained baristas and roasters working behind the scenes are clear leaders in the specialty coffee realm, and when you enter one of their cafes, it’s obvious they extend the invitation right out to you: Come on in, have a seat, sip, make a new friend and smile.

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company is a national award-winning company, staging regional and world premieres from some of today’s hottest playwrights. But what really makes this company awesome is its mission: to present “profound theatrical stories that inspire our audiences and enrich our community.” BETC believes storytelling only reaches its true potential when it’s enacted in the service of empathy, when it provides a way for people to explore others’ circumstances and face different perspectives. Stories about faith, honor, love, aging, jealousy... these are the stories that BETC brings to theater-goers. If you haven’t seen a BETC show yet, now’s the time.

Cemetery to Walk through COLUMBIA CEMETERY Ninth and Pleasant streets, Boulder There’s just something about walking through a cemetery on a hot summer night or a breezy fall afternoon. While a little macabre, cemeteries connect us to the past from whence we came and whither we all will go. Columbia Cemetery is the oldest burial ground in Boulder with graves dating back to 1870. Don’t believe us? Search the tombstones for the grave of Anna Eggleston, the first person to be buried there after her death on May 16 of that year. But why stop there? Covering about 10.5 acres, there are 6,500 graves to explore. Make sure to look out for a Jane Doe, a previously unidentified murder victim from the 1950s.

ames Lee, The Bitter Bar’s owner and operator, says the downtown cocktail joint isn’t named after aromatic alcohol bitters. Rather, the name comes from the intensity of early spirits. Original whisky, gin and rye were fierce, commonly diluted (by necessity) with water, sugars, citrus and medicinal bitters. From there the cocktail was born, and in that spirit the Bitter Bar continues. Enjoy a daily happy hour from 5-8 p.m., and choose from a handful of cocktails on tap or made to order, in addition to an array of wines and beers; charcuterie platters with savory bites like olives, meats and cheeses round out a full night out.

here’s nothing better than an oldschool bar. There’s no pretense. You’re there for cold libations, interesting people and maybe some foosball. The Sundown Saloon — known lovingly as the Downer — has all that and more. But not too much more because it’s old-school and we’re not looking for fancy gimmicks. Conveniently located on Pearl Street, you can stroll the mall during the day then head to the Downer for some evening shenanigans. Make a new friend when you accidentally gouge them with your pool stick or puncture them with a misfired dart. Make sure to buy your new friend a drink to apologize for your clumsiness.

he sprawling 107-acre campus at Dawson School is perfect for activities befitting kindergartners to 12th graders. There’s fencing, a student-tended garden, woodworking and ceramics. But those experiences do not come at the expense of a full theater, engineering programs, two gyms and six sports fields. The school also offers a great internship program for high school seniors, who get a chance to learn the ropes in the working world before graduation. At Dawson, students are not just another face in the crowd, everyone is valued for their distinct personalities and abilities. enturies ago, our forefathers (and mothers) went to sleep with the sun, unable to do much of anything productive in the dark. Then came the candle, and we humans started reading after sundown. Then came electricity and our predecessors could take care of business way past dusk. Fast-forward a century or so and our productivity is soaring with faster and smoother Wi-Fi. We can buy groceries, pay bills, correspond, interact with the government, watch cat videos and do just about anything else thanks to the internet. Which is why we all need a comfortable and reliable place to Wi-Fi. Our reader’s say the Boulder Public Library is the place to be, whether you just want to relax and read a good article online or get important stuff done. But no sleeping.

That’s why our readers named Colorado Mountain Ranch the best summer camp around for yet another year. Place to Fix a Flat Tire DAVIDSON MESA SCENIC OVERLOOK Westbound U.S. 36 between the McCaslin and Table Mesa exits. Here’s the thing, getting a flat tire while out biking sucks. It’s never fun. Ever. Unless you’ve got a great view, right? Or maybe a taco stand right nearby. But if you can’t wrangle your flats near a taco truck, try at least breaking down in a view-worthy place. Around Boulder County, that’s not that hard to come by. Our recommendation? Pop your tire or loosen your screws right around the Davidson Mesa Scenic Overlook on the U.S. 36 Bikeway — you know, that big hill on westbound U.S. Highway 36 between the McCaslin and Table Mesa exits. The little bike station has a pump and a few useful tools to make sure your ride is back up to speed real quick. Bonus: There’s also a bench (great for eating snacks) and a water fountain (great for taking a drink). I

BOULDER EYES/BEYER LASIK

here was a time when the idea of an indoor climbing gym seemed like a crazy notion to folks in Boulder County who lived in the shadow of some of the world’s best rocks to climb in the great outdoors. At first, these indoor facilities, with their colorful resin holds, were treated like a training facility for climbers during inclement weather. But my, how things have changed! Indoor climbing has become a wildly popular sport and a workout all on its own. On any given day you can find climbers from 6 to 86 making their way up the creative lines on the overhanging walls or working on the boulder problems closer to the ground. Climbing is climbing and when it comes to doing that vertical dance indoors, and our readers say that Boulder Rock Club is their favorite spot. Whether you’re a beginner looking for instruction or a world class pro in search of competition, this club truly has it all.

That’s right, when it came time for Mr. Waterworld himself to have lasik surgery, Costner chose to have his procedure done by acclaimed lasik expert Dr. Craig Beyer of Boulder Eyes/Beyer Lasik. Obviously, celebrity clients are not the best reason to choose a particular lasik clinic, but knowing that our thousands of readers also chose Boulder Eyes/Beyer Lasik as the best does start to add up. If you think lasik could be a good fit for you, then drop by and have a chat with Dr. Beyer and his knowledgeable staff. Until then, tatonka.

Place to Swim Outdoors OUTDOOR POOL AT MEMORY SQUARE 801 Grant St., Louisville, 303-666-7909 Colorado is known for its outdoor beauty: majestic peaks, pristine meadows, wild landscapes and flowing rivers. But one thing Colorado is not known for is places to swim, even though we do have a few good options. On a hot summer day, there’s nothing quite like jumping in a swimming pool to cool off, splash around and have fun. And since we’re also water conscious in Colorado, community pools are way better than filling up inflatable pools in your backyard or, worse yet, digging a pool to keep all to yourself. So during Colorado’s swimming season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) the outdoor pool at Memory Square in Louisville is the place to be. You can get your laps on in the swim lanes, let your kids run wild in the splash pool, whizz down either of the facility’s two water slides or take brief dips in the shallow end between sun-tanning sessions on the pool deck. UNIVERSITY BICYCLES

LARRY H. MILLER TOYOTA BOULDER

I

t all started in 1985. Doug, a Boulder cyclist, secured a small basement on the west end of Pearl Street and began repairing any bike he could get his hands on. It only took eight months before his business grew so large he had to move the operation to a ground-level brick and mortar on Pearl Street, where University Bicycles still resides today. Now, more than 30 years later, it’s our reader’s favorite bike shop. In addition to repairs, accessories and rentals, you can purchase a new bike and enjoy free adjustments forever, as in, you know, forever — not a bad life cycle.

T

hey say buying a new car is the second most important purchase a person makes in their lifetime (the first is buying a house). With the stakes so high, you want to make sure you’re getting and giving the attention the purchase deserves. Our readers say Larry H. Miller Toyota Boulder is the best place to get personalized care and advice on your big buy. Making big life decisions is hard, but between Boulder Toyota’s easy scheduling platform and their stellar auto servicing offers, car-buying is a little bit easier for residents of Boulder County.

e are blessed with a plethora of farms right here in our beautiful county. And they provide an abundance of fresh food ideal for any and every meal. When it comes to which of these great farms is best, our readers have spoken and they chose Munson Farms. Munson Farms has a lot to brag about. For more than 40 years they’ve been providing Boulder with fresh produce, including tomatoes, peaches, pumpkins and their famous sweet corn. In all, they boast more than 100 acres of locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Best Place to Watch the Sunrise SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN (40.02689°N, 105.41854°W) You’ll probably have to wake up a bit earlier than you normally do... but trust us, it’ll be worth it. Set your alarm about an hour before sunrise, hop in the car, drive up Boulder Canyon and take a right onto Sugarloaf Road. Then follow signs for the Switzerland Trailhead, which takes you to a little dirt cul-de-sac. Take the trail on the east side of the parking lot. You’re looking at about a half-mile of trail in front of you to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain — a little steep, yes, but it’s short and you’re going up to an impressively vast view, after all. By the time you start hiking, first light should already be upon you, so have no fear of hiking in the dark. Once you crest the summit, pick one of the boulders stacked atop the hill, park your view east, and let the golden sun ray show begin as the sun peeks over the horizon. The best part is you can still be at work on time. BOULDER WEEKLY

It could be true; as far as we know nobody’s actually tried it yet. But the point is, McGuckin transcends its assigned category as a hardware store. It’s like calling a Stradivarius a fiddle. It seems bizarre that in a well-traveled, well-educated, wellhealed place, a hardware store in Boulder, Colorado, can be held in such high esteem. But it’s not bizarre at all. Seriously, people love to just go in and walk around. And when you do need to find that exact this or that, McGuckins probably has it... and in several colors. Hardware store? So, yeah, this one was hard. Trails have personality, you know? It’d be like picking your favorite child, or your favorite flavor of gelato, or the one thing you love most about your Mom. Just one answer is hard! All contenders running for spot numero uno are great in some way or another, and usually in very different ways. So, we tried to reframe the question: What is the one trail we could hike every single week and never grow weary of? The answer is the Lion’s Lair, a 2-ish-mile trail that winds up the backside of Mt. Sanitas, and connects to the Centennial Trailhead via a 1.25-mile trail called the Sunshine Canyon Trail. It’s got the rugged feel of a backcountry experience, a killer view once you nail the summit and multiple options for your descent: Head back down the way you came, walk the southern ridge, or descend the eastern slope toward the valley floor. Just don’t forget where you parked.

or a whole generation of Boulder County folks, Lucky’s Market feels like an old friend. It was all about “local” before such a concept was considered cool. While other stores feel corporate and fast paced, Lucky’s feels personalized. Samples are abundant, there’s always something new and interesting, and somebody who can answer your questions about food or health remedies is never far away. And the lines at the register, when they do exist, seem more like a chance to mingle and joke around than a wait to be endured. While there may be three Lucky’s Markets in our county these days (two in Boulder, one in Longmont) it’s still fair to say that each one is truly a neighborhood market and reflects the values that such a description implies. We understand why our readers chose Lucky’s as their favorite grocery store.

s there anything quite like a great music store? A place where you can go in an and noodle around on an instrument or shoot the breeze with an affable store employee and discuss how much Eric Clapton sucks? Clapton notwithstanding, Woodsongs is a great place to pick up an instrument and explore sonic avenues. They have guitars, amps, ukes, band instruments and more. They also sell used instruments, rent out instruments and teach lessons. It’s one of those places you can step into and not come out for hours.

here’s a reason people in shampoo commercials always look so happy: Getting all cleaned up feels great. You’ll feel even greater when you take your car to Puddle Car Wash to get it all spruced up. Drop your wheels off and opt for the interior detailing, and you’ll return to a car with freshly washed carpets and seats, clean and conditioned leather and vinyl, cleaned ashtrays, mats and windows, a vacuumed trunk, and a bonus exterior car wash. Add on the full exterior detailing, however, and you’ll see a paint and clear coat restoration and wax, along with clean fender wells, rims, tires, bumpers, trim and windows, too. It won’t be hard to look happy as you drive away.

e live in a crafty day and age; Pinterest has turned many of us into DIY warriors, inspiring us to make everything from the centerpieces for our own weddings to our first child’s baby blanket. So when you’re looking to get the best supplies for your project, whether you need glitter for your Halloween costume, an air brush kit to decorate out-ofthis-world cakes, or just-the-right fabric to patch up your great grandmother’s appliqué quilt, our readers say you should head to Michaels. At Michaels you’ll find everything you need, plus have access to the store’s knowledgable staff so you can make a project you’re proud of.

Unsurprisingly, this isn’t the first time our readers have celebrated Mike’s knowledgable staff, extensive selection of camera and video products, and in-depth education services. Take a video production class, buy a new camera, find help with your device or print your photos at Mike’s.

hen you live in Colorado, you know the weather can be… unpredictable. It may be a great morning for a bike ride, but we’ve all seen the winds pick up and the clouds roll in by mid afternoon. Let’s not even get into those 75-degree days that end in an evening dusting of snow. That’s why our readers’ favorite spot to shop for men’s clothing is Recreational Equipment Inc., where they can get stylish clothes to handle whatever Colorado’s weather throws at them. REI has clothes for all activities under the sun, and probably even the moon. Plus, most of their clothes are multifunctional and stylish enough to be worn out to social events. Two birds, one store.

A group of wise Teachers, who have long guided humanity from behind the scenes, are now returning to the everyday world to help us solve our most critical global problems. At the center of their group is the World Teacher, Maitreya, the Eldest Brother of the human family. He embodies the expectations of all spiritual traditions, but is not a religious leader. He comes as an educator in the broadest sense, to point the way into a new era of sharing and justice - leading to right human relations, self-awareness, and peace. Soon his words will galvanize into action the highest aspirations of all men and women of goodwill. All will be called to play their parts in the great work of planetary restoration.
