Someone spank these kids (Re: “Skatepark skullduggery,” News, June 23.) FYI, my kid had his board stolen from this park on about June 12.

He also said he saw kids that had guns with them. Never have we seen such thugs in Boulder County, and especially in a skatepark.

Two teens said some comment to me as we passed and I shrugged it off, even though someone should spank these children. Their parents are obviously guilty of having no clue in life.

Dumpster-diving dangers (Re: “Dumpster-diving for the poor,” News, June 23.) So, FNB [Food Not Bombs] is wondering why Boulder restaurants won’t donate the food that they throw away.

Seems to me that while they’re Dumpster-diving for food to feed people, they’re kinda missing one thing. It’s food in the garbage! Restaurants are required by Boulder County health codes to discard all food that is bad.

See, there’s this thing called foodborne illness. Restaurants don’t just throw away food willy-nilly. That’s money going right out the door. Same as grocery stores.

It’s not about not wanting to help, it’s about protecting the public from food that may not be safe for consumption.

That’s it. If a grocery store or a restaurant throws away food, it’s because they’ve deemed that it’s no longer safe to eat. So why would they be OK with giving away said un-safe food to feed others? Where the hell is the Boulder health depart-

Most of us would consider an annual income of $2.4 million to be a windfall, but it didn’t take Paulson a full 12 months of work to pocket his windfall — or one month, a week, or even a day. That’s how much he made an hour. Yes, Paulson could’ve worked one single hour in 2010 and hauled off a paycheck equal to what a typical household gets for a lifetime of work.

That’s more than wrong — it’s immoral. In Washington, Wall Street-backed Congress critters are working fervently to kill Medicare and defund everything from education to environmental protection — all on the grounds that the only way to cope with the growing federal deficit is to bulldoze programs that Americans count on. But look

If just these 25 guys were taxed at the 35 percent rate, Congress would have an additional $4 billion this year to use for filling the deficit hole, rather than gleefully throwing sick seniors into it.

Since 1995, the total income of the 400 richest Americans has nearly quadrupled, yet the real tax rate they pay has been cut almost in half.

America isn’t broke — it’s simply being gamed by super-rich tax dodgers.

Much ado about puffing Police worries about highway fatalities involving marijuana show ignorance of the fact that marijuana users are rarely responsible for highway accidents and deaths. Car accidents involving marijuana users are almost always caused by drunks or careless driving by the other driver.

Notions about lunatic behavior by pot smokers behind the wheel first appeared in the movie Reefer Madness. Like every other accusation in this scurrilous film, the idea that cannabis causes reckless driving is a lie!

It is a scientifically verified fact that marijuana users are safer drivers than teetotalers. The Drugs and Accident Risk in Fatally Injured Drivers study concluded that marijuana has a “negative risk factor” for fatal highway accidents: Cannabis Odds Ratio 0.6 (0.3-1.0) P-value 0.065.

By contrast, the odds ratio for alcohol was 7.6.

“Drivers in whom only opiates were detected had an odds ratio of 2.4, whilst marijuana cases provided a relative risk of 0.6. Drivers in whom stimulants were detected gave an odds ratio of 1.4, whilst benzodiazepines gave an odds ratio of 1.0. By contrast the odds ratio for alcohol was 6.8.”

“It was of some interest that cannabis tended to show a negative effect on relative risk when other drug groups showed an increase. This phenomenon has also been seen elsewhere [Terhune et al, 1992; Williams et al, 1985]. The most likely reason probably relates to the over-compensation of marijuana-using drivers on their driving skills. Over-compensation may be caused simply by slowing down and avoiding adverse driving situations.

These observations do not seem to be related to whether delta-9-THC or 11-carboxy-THC are measured in blood [Terhune et al, 1992; Williams et al, 1985].”

A “negative risk factor” means that pot smokers have a lower accident rate than teetotalers.

Several other on-road driving studies funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation prove that marijuana smokers are safer drivers than teetotalers.

“The THC-only drivers had [an accident] responsibility rate below that of the drug-free drivers, as was found previously

by Williams and colleagues (1986).”

All of the accusations made against marijuana, including reckless driving, are nothing more than lies dreamed up by Harry Anslinger in his insane crusade to keep marijuana illegal.

It was Thomas Jefferson.

“T.J., come in and kick back,” I said.

“Have some fudge and a cool one.”

“Don’t mind if I do,” he said, as he popped a piece in his mouth. “Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to god.”

His eye fell on Nixon.

“Richard, what are you doing here?

Bill Safire told me you were in purgatory for sticking the country with wage and price controls in 1971 — and for starting the war on drugs, of course.”

“They let me out on a pass to attend the Watergate reunion,” Nixon replied.

“They said I could stay through the Fourth.”

“Excellent!” T.J. said enthusiastically.

“I always come down a few days before the Fourth of July and stay for the fireworks. It’s an opportunity to chat about the state of the republic and of liberty.”

“We were just doing that ourselves,” I said.

“And what specifically are you talking about?” he asked.

“We were discussing gay marriage,” I said. “How do you feel about it?”

“There you go again!” he exploded.

“That’s all you latter-day newspaper men ever ask me — how do I feel about things. Why don’t you ever ask ‘What do I think?’ What’s wrong with you people? Did the age of reason pass you by?”

He sighed heavily. “Very well, I’ll tell you how I feel about gay marriage. Like a lot of things in your age, I find the whole concept bizarre, disturbing, selfindulgent and somewhat disgusting — I’m an 18th-century man, for god’s sake.

Now let me tell you what I think about gay marriage. I think the question of gay marriage is entirely uninteresting and unworthy of serious discussion — because the answer is self-evident: Gays have an unalienable right to wed each other if they so choose.”

“Wow, that’s a pretty radical thing to say,” Nixon said darkly.

“Radical?” T.J. said coldly. “Of course it’s radical! I am a radical! I am not just a radical; I am radicalism! I wrote the most radical document in American history. The second sentence of that document is the most radical sentence in human history. It cannot be taken from you by man or government; to even attempt do so would be a crime against nature and nature’s god. If gays choose to pursue their happiness by marrying their partners, that’s their business and theirs alone,” he said.

He looked directly at Nixon.

“Richard, your political party spends a lot of time talking about American exceptionalism. Well the proposition that all men — and all women; you latter-day patriots got that much right — that every member of our species has an unalienable right to pursue happiness is our most exceptional idea.”

“The Bible says gay love is an abomination,” Nixon protested.

T.J. snorted. “Ah yes, the Bible. It says that in the book of Leviticus.

Earlier it says eating pigs and working on Saturdays are abominations, but I’ll bet you don’t let that stand between you and a platter of bacon and eggs on Saturday morning. As long as you’re reading Scripture selectively, why don’t you ignore the parts that are hateful to several million of your neighbors and fellow citizens, and not just the parts that interfere with your breakfast?

“Not that there’s anything wrong with reading the Bible selectively,” he continued. “I once took a razor and edited the New Testament with it. I cut away all the myth, superstition, hate and humbug, leaving only the life and pure moral teachings of Jesus. There wasn’t much left, fewer than 100 pages.

“But to return to gay marriage, just as the phrase ‘the pursuit of happiness’ doesn’t appear in the Constitution, neither does the word ‘marriage.’ But that doesn’t mean they aren’t unalienable rights, and it doesn’t absolve government of the duty to secure them. Securing unalienable rights is the raison d’être of government, as I said in the Declaration.

“Marriage is a contract,” he went on, “and governments have a duty to enforce contracts — and to enforce them in such a way that they are consistent with and respectful of the unalienable rights of the contracting parties. If a marriage contract is perverted into an instrument of tyranny, oppression and abuse, then government has a duty to intervene.”

He paused and appeared reflective.

“You know, I hadn’t thought of this before, but given the tyrannous and abusive way Sharia law treats women, there is probably a stronger case to be made for banning Islamic marriage than there is for banning gay marriage. Perhaps I should take a razor to the Koran someday.”

Crisco stock plunges OK, admit it, we are all thinking the same thing.

Isn’t it perfect — or just wrong — that the man suspected of squeezing into a porta-potty to peep on women at a local yoga festival is named Chrisco?

Our first thought was that he needed some of that slippery stuff to squirm into such a tight space and maybe a bit more for what likely came next.

And how desperate does a guy have to be to sit in a pool of human waste to get a shot of some private parts? Hey dude, here’s a news flash: You can see it for free on the Internet without covering yourself in feces!

Now authorities have unveiled an unsettlingly long list of Boulder establishments that Chrisco allegedly admitted to peeping in. Makes you want to use the men’s room even when the line to the ladies’ bathroom isn’t that long.

And how does that thought process work? “Oh, this nice, clean stall with a peephole just isn’t smelly enough. I think I’m going to live on the wild side and turn it up a notch. And while I’m here in Target, I better pick up a tarp.”

In an interview with Fox 31 News, Chrisco describes “praising God” for the “animal beauty” he saw while peeping: “I don’t know, it seems kind of weird,” he says. (No, Luke, it’s not weird, it’s downright sick and deeply disturbing.) “But I would just find my peace and go away and just, you know, say thank you goddesses, and go about my night.”

And here’s another gem: “The women are sort of the highest creature of the universe, even higher than, like, an eagle.”

Wow. We’re sure the women of Boulder County are feeling flattered.

And violated.

Don’t get too fired up So, authorities say the Maxwell Fire in Lefthand Canyon this past week was caused by an unattended campfire.

Which part of this don’t you people get? There is high fire danger right now.

When you are outside, and you light something on fire, even if it’s just a spliff, make sure it is completely out before you wander off, OK? And this weekend, when you are lighting everything from sparklers to homemade pipe bombs to Really Rad Rockets with Report, try to remember that sparks and fire grow when they are provided with fuel and, um, air.

Oh, and by the way, it’s usually a bad idea to break the sticks off of a bunch of bottle rockets, tie them together with one long wick and light them near a field of tall, dry grasses. Learned that one the hard way, we did.

e hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The words — part of the Declaration of Independence — ostensibly unite generations of Americans behind a common set of principles, values so universally true that they are considered obvious.

And yet those words divide us perhaps more than any others. If vetted by an attorney, that simple sentence would produce pages of definitions, disambiguation and disclaimers. What do we mean by truth? What do we mean by “self-evident”? Does the term “men” include women? Does “all” truly mean all? What is an “unalienable” right?

What does “pursuit of Happiness” denote?

Are their limits to inalienable rights?

Much of the strife we’ve experienced in this nation in the 235 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed has revolved around the failure of American society fully to realize the potential of these radical and powerful words.

The fight to end slavery, the struggle of American Indians to retain their land and ways of life, women’s suffrage, the civil rights and women’s rights movements of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s — these social movements came about because disenfranchised people thought that they, too, were included in the phrase “all men are created equal.”

While we work still to resolve issues of racism and sexism in American culture, gays and lesbians have fought their way forward to demand equality under the law — the right to live and love and marry and raise families.

Each year in honor of the Fourth of July, Boulder Weekly takes a look at a key issue pertaining to freedom and constitutional rights. This year, we look at same-sex marriage and why conservatives ought to champion this fundamental right. And although Colorado has far to go to welcome same-sex marriage — illegal under state law — the country as a whole seems to have reached a tipping point with the recent vote that made New York the sixth state to legalize gay marriage.

American history has demonstrated repeatedly that once a group of human beings comes to believe the phrase “all men are created equal” applies to them, there is no holding them back. And so it will be with gay marriage.

he quest for equal social and legal representation has traveled from church to courtroom and everywhere in between — but in many ways, inclusion for the LGBTQ community begins and ends with the language we use to concoct social meaning.

Joshua Raclaw, a sociocultural linguist and Ph.D. student at the University of Colorado Boulder says language is closely connected to culture.

“A lot of anthropologists view people’s language and the categories of that language as expressing viewpoints intimately tied to the culture of that language,” he says.

The American English language often adheres to binaries to articulate the world, which can be problematic for individuals who do not identify with one of the two normative or dominant descriptions.

“We have a society and culture that understands sex and gender in terms of only two,” Raclaw says.

In reality, there is a huge population of people who identify outside the male-female, heterosexual binary — whether it is an individual’s biological sex, sexual orientation, sex or gender identity, sexual behavior or gender expression.

“If you’re in that third category, it is really, really difficult to identify yourself in your everyday life, because your language does not accommodate for your gender identity,” Raclaw says. “So people in the U.S. who don’t fit into a binary gender — people who may identify as androgynous or gender queer, for example — when they don’t see themselves as being fully male or female, how do they talk about themselves using language?”

Gendered binaries erase, marginalize and ostracize individuals who do not identify as strictly male or female, Raclaw says. The fact that language reproduces archaic notions of normalizing sexual behavior or identity makes the fight for equal representation in society, or articulating one’s own selfexpression, an even more challenging task.

The gendered assumptions of the English language can be found primari-

ly in pronouns, formal salutations and references to romantic partners.

“It’s very limiting,” says Kevin Correa, the assistant director of CU’s GLBT Resource Center. “Language itself is limiting. It’s almost — I mean, we need new words, because the words that we have are so limiting.”

The creation of a gender-neutral pronoun has been suggested and is implemented in some circumstances.

The Queer Initiative, an advocacy group at CU-Boulder, released a pamphlet that explains and provides examples for usage of a third-person singular pronoun that includes the gender identity — or absence thereof — for all individuals.

Perhaps the most common substitute for the gendered pronouns “he” or “she” would be using “they” as a thirdperson singular. The Queer Initiative provides the following example in its pamphlet: “They laughed. I called them. That is theirs. They like theirself.”

Breaking and reconfiguring the English language is a suggested remedy, but Raclaw says the mainstream adoption of a gender-inclusive language will require an increase in social consciousness as well.

“I don’t know if you can do that just with language,” Raclaw says. “I think you need to start with a larger cultural change, which possibly is as impossible, but it’s a very difficult thing to try to change that.”

Adopting a more inclusive language starts small. By using the words “partner” or “spouse” instead of “husband” or “wife” in reference to intimate relationships, assumptions about the nature of these partnerships may steadily be erased, experts say. Asking people how they wish to be identified, regardless of their perceived orientation or gender identity, could help eradicate the asymmetry of language.

“Unless someone’s indicated their preference to me, it feels important not to scrutinize my assumptions on their experiences of gender,” says Aicilia Lewis, one of the executive directors of Out Boulder.

Weird sex laws in the U.S.

ack in the 1700s, U.S. law wasn’t too kind to people who were guilty of sodomy. The illegal act carried a maximum sentence

of death.

But in 1778, Thomas Jefferson rewrote the law to save people’s lives and, instead of death, the maximum sentence was castration. Up until 1962, sodomy was considered a felony and, in some states, oral sex, adultery and masturbation fell under the sodomy laws.

In 2003, however, a Supreme Court ruling invalidated all sodomy laws nationwide, upholding a citizen’s right to privacy. But even with that invalidation, there are still some strange sex laws across the nation: • Adultery is still illegal in many states, including Colorado.

• In Idaho, fornication (defined as sex between unmarried people) is illegal, and those guilty of it can pay a fine of up to $300 or serve a six-month prison sentence.

• Colorado has a law saying it’s even

illegal for an innkeeper to knowingly rent a room to unmarried couples if their intent is to have sex. It’s a class 2 misdemeanor. North Carolina has a similar law.

• In Oklahoma, if a man takes a woman’s virginity and doesn’t marry her, it is considered a felony, and the man can face up to five years in prison.

• Under a noise ordinance in Kalamazoo, Mich., you can’t sing in public. So serenading your lover on the banks of the river at Sutherland Park is a no-go.

• In some states, it is illegal for six or more women to live together because it would constitute a brothel.

• The sale of sex toys, specifically, vibrators, is illegal in Alabama and Mississippi. It was illegal in Texas until 2008. Apparently, there aren’t any laws against owning or using one.

• In Utah, first cousins can only marry each other if they’re both over the age of 65. If they can prove they can’t have children, the age drops to 55.

“I think honoring people’s own language is huge,” Correa says, “because there is not a universal language. Part of the problem is there’s so many ways of identification, of understanding, of experiences, so we try to encourage people to ask people how they identify and sort of what language they use, and to honor that and respect that, and not impose our own language upon other people.”

The movement to reclaim terms that were once seen as derogatory has caused a large shift in the way binaries constrain identity. An example of a word that has shifted meaning over time is “queer.” The word has been used as a discriminatory term against individuals who identify as homosexual, but has been reclaimed by many organizations and individuals in the GLBTQ community.

“Some people hate that word because it’s been used so often negatively against people,” Correa says.

“Others have reclaimed it — people who like the word, people who don’t like the word.”

Correa says that the first step is to ask a person how they self-identify, and what the word means to them, and then use the individual’s chosen language.

Raclaw says he sees reclaiming words like “queer” and shifting its meaning from negative to positive helps get around the binaries in language that stigmatize certain identities.

Lewis says that she is always the first to pick up the phone when legal forms or documents require checking a box for male or female.

“I always make a call, and that’s part of my advocacy,” Lewis says. “When we were flying — we all went to do a conference together — I called to ask if I have to identify gender as part of the TSA requirement.”

Speaking out and drawing attention to the gendered implications of language, as well as self-modifying, are some of the first steps to promoting inclusion.

“One benefit that we have, compared to some Romance languages, is that at least objects don’t have a gender, so I think that does make it a little bit easier for us, for English speakers,” Correa says. “We don’t have to worry about what to call the couch.”

The top participant in Optibike’s annual weight loss challenge has lost 25 pounds since January.

“I think it makes exercise fun for everybody so they want to do it, and the weight just drops off,” says Craig Taber, sales and marketing manager for Optibike.

hen Jim Turner founded Optibike, a local electric bike manufacturer, he initially geared marketing toward the environmental benefits of swapping a car for a bike — even one powered with electricity. Turner looked to his own experiences and his own life, and decided people often balk at biking to work because it’s too far, the terrain is too steep, or arriving at work sweat-soaked is too unappealing.

The Optibike was sold as an ecofriendly choice for distance commuters.

It runs 50 miles before needing a recharge and provides motorized assistance at the flick of a wrist to cut down on time and sweat.

Then he started getting phone calls from customers. Yes, they loved their bike and, hey, they happened to have dropped 20 or 30 pounds.

They’d made a lifestyle change and lost weight in the way a study released June 23 in The New England Journal of Medicine showed is often the most effective method.

The published results combine a series of three studies beginning as early as 1976 and checking in with a total of 289,916 participants, mostly female, and all health professionals. amuel Avital speaks many words about the art he has spent his entire life perfecting.

Strange, because Avital’s art is practiced wordlessly. He is a mime, practicing, as he once wrote, “the ultimate language of silence.”

The Moroccan-born Lafayette resident is celebrating 40 years as the director of Boulder-based Le Centre du Silence, a mime school he opened in 1971. He is also the founder of the nowdefunct Boulder Mime Theatre and host of the International Summer Mime Workshop. He has performed all over the world and studied under the masters of mime: Etienne Decroux, Marcel

Still spry at 79, he hasn’t performed since 2000, and he focuses his energy on teaching Kabbalah and his craft, which have intertwined into a discipline he teaches called BodySpeak. “[Avital] has, for me, the most focused and the most inclusive artistic point of view that I’ve encountered,” says Mark Olsen, a close friend and former student who now heads the graduate acting program at Penn State University. “A lot of artists seem to be dogmatic and territorial about their art.

It’s as if the boundaries of what they’ve chosen to be their artistic expression is what defines them. Samuel is different.

His artistry, his gift, is inspiration, in igniting that fire within.”

Avital was born in Morocco in 1932 and left his family for Israel when he was 14. The transition from a very traditional lifestyle in Morroco to a more modern one at an Israeli kibbutz was very abrupt and difficult for him, and he found solace in theater and other performing arts. It was in Israel that Avital discovered the man whose work would open Avital’s eyes to the possibilities of mime — Charlie Chaplin.

me. So I looked for an avenue,” Avital says in the documentary The Silent Outcry. “Somehow, the words seemed very inadequate to express myself. I had come with such fantastic luggage [the culture shock] that needed to be expressed. There was one fabulous thing that I saw at that time in the early ’50s, the Charlie Chaplin film Limelight. ...

Limelight made me think that there was more to theater and this new medium that I was discovering than just talking, because this man, with silence, could express very deep human emotions.”

Avital’s interest in wordless theater led him to move to France in 1956. He lived the starving-artist life as he dedicated himself to studying mime. In 1964, he came to the United States. He performed off-Broadway in New York and began teaching at Southern Methodist University in Texas in 1969. Two years later, he moved to Boulder.

In 1971, Avital started the Boulder Mime Theatre, and he led his students in flamboyant, silent parades from the Boulder Public Library to the courthouse every week through the mid-’80s, when the city informed him he would have to purchase insurance for his students and permits to perform on the mall.

Avital saw his performances as an artistic service to the community, and he did not take kindly to the sudden-onset bureaucracy.

“Thirteen years, I didn’t have a permit!” Avital exclaims, gesturing strongly and frequently as he talks. “I was bringing tourism here, and now, suddenly, they wanted a permit! You know what, thank you. I know now that is the end of this activity, that the Boulder Mime Theatre is no more.”

What most people think of as mime — the guy in white face paint and black beret stuck in the invisible box — is actually pantomime, Avital says. The difference, he explains, is that though pantomime is performed in silence, it still performs with words.

“In pantomime, you’re still talking,” Avital says. “I’m translating the word that you have in your head through mime.”

He demonstrates what he means.

With wide, expressive eyes, he points to his chest, then presses his palms together, brings them up to his shoulder, lays his head on his hands and closes his eyes.

“I. Am going. To sleep,” he explains, adding that it was his former teacher, mime master Etienne Decroux, who told students, “If you want to sleep, sleep!

Don’t tell me about it. Sleep! Take the position. Do it! Instead of talking about it with your movements, do it!”

The craft Avital spent his life perfecting and teaching is mime in its purest form, a physical performing art relatively unknown outside the circles of its practitioners. The simplest definition is that

mime is storytelling without words.

Avital hasn’t performed since 2000, and the few videos of his performances, with sharply defined movements and bluntly conveyed meanings, appear akin to modern dance, albeit modern dance overtly concerned with storytelling.

But mime and dance are not the same.

“I want you to think about heaven and earth, gravity and counter-gravity,” Avital says. “I want you to think that the dancer, mostly, wants to reach the heaven, to escape gravity to express emotion.”

“The mime brings it to here, the clown brings it to here, right here,” Avital says, pointing to his heart.

After disbanding the Boulder Mime Theatre, Avital focused on his teaching.

He began teaching Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism, in the ’90s, and he saw parallels between what he was teaching and his art. He intertwined the two and created a discipline he named BodySpeak, which he calls the “summation of my life, spiritual and artistical.”

BodySpeak tries to make artistic expression easier, to clear the mental blocks that can hinder creativity, to erase the gap between thinking and doing.

“This is an artistic principle, the actor, the musician, the painter, this is one of the great challenges of any artist. I have an idea, and I don’t know what to do with it! I have this thing, I paint, and I sculpt, and it’s not the idea I meant it

to be. If they adopt [BodySpeak], they will quicken this creativity.”

He encourages his students to embrace what makes their artistic approach unique.

“That’s why it’s both dangerous and fantastic, this approach, because I don’t allow the person to allow me to tell them what to do. I want them to be the authority, to write their own script. But I give them the tools,” Avital says.

Avital himself is uncompromising in his vision, even eschewing nonprofit status for his various endeavors in order to avoid the meddling of a budget-conscious board of directors. He says he has never received grant money from any institution. His approach to art is spiritual, but he refuses to be anybody’s idol, instead insisting they create their own fiercely independent artistic identity.

“By no means is he that weirdly guru kind of cult-like mystic,” Olsen says, recalling the end of the first Avital workshop he attended. “I felt so blessed to be a part of his life and work and all that I had learned from him. … I attempted to kiss his hand, and he gave me a quick slap on the arm. He said, ‘Don’t ever do that. What the hell do you think you’re doing?’ He really stopped me from the kind of guru-worship. He wouldn’t stand for it. He didn’t want that kind of cloudy, moon-faced adoration.”

Romeo and Juliet filled with the angst of the irrational

he 54th Annual Colorado Shakespeare Festival kicked off last weekend with the ultimate tale of tragic teen love, Romeo and Juliet. The festival features four plays this year. In addition to the brawling Montagues and Capulets, the idyllic outdoor Mary Rippon Theatre also hosts The Comedy of Errors. In the indoor University Theatre, you’ll find The Little Prince, based on the existential classic by Antoine De Saint-Exupery and written by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar, as well as Nikolai Gogol’s The Inspector General.

The sleeker schedule and 50/50 Shakespeare to non-Shakespeare ratio are not the only changes Shakespeare Festival patrons will notice this year.

Anyone who has ever missed one of ol’ Will’s masterfully crafted bon mots or mots juste due to a low-flying helicopter (damn hot-shot Flight for Life pilots) or an ill-timed car horn intruding from Broadway should rejoice, because each and every one of the actors on stage in the Mary Rippon now has his or her own handy-dandy personal microphone. That’s right, the CSF is now wired for sound. While some purists might decry mic-ing the cast, most will welcome this innovation, I’m sure.

As one of the most well-known and oft-produced of Shakespeare’s plays, Romeo and Juliet poses a challenge to any director. How does one remain true to the letter and spirit of the piece while keeping it vibrant and relevant to today’s audience?

Often, the director will rely on an unexpected setting. Romeo and Juliet … in space! Or, Romeo and Juliet … on ice! As Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet proved, swords may be replaced with guns and Mantua with a trailer park and the end result can be astounding, but it’s always nice to see a more traditional take on the material. If you’re unfamiliar with this tale of woe then get thee to a library! Better still, get thee to the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, for this is one well-done Romeo and Juliet. All right, I relent. The Montagues and the Capulets, two wealthy families in Verona, hate each other. Their younger, male members itch to fight every time they pass in the street, and they’ve scratched that itch so often that the Prince of Verona

has forbade any future breaches of the peace on pain of death. Despite starting the play in lust for a girl named Rosaline, Romeo (Benjamin Bonenfant), a Montague, falls deeply and quite madly in love at first sight with Juliet ( Jamie Ann Romero), a Capulet.

Romeo and Juliet’s love is so pure and true that it extinguishes the feud between their parents, and they all live happily ever after. Or, the young lovers needlessly take their own lives in the throes of the kind of romantic passion only found in grand tragedies and junior high school. I don’t want to spoil the ending for any first-timers who want to go in fresh, but it’s definitely one of those two options.

Jamie Ann Romero and Benjamin Bonenfant imbue their characters with credibility. Their performances bring out the youth in Juliet and Romeo that is often missed by actors that insist on playing young teenagers as if they were in their late 20s. Though Romero and Bonenfant acquit themselves nicely, as is often the case with Romeo and Juliet, certain supporting actors buoy the leads and come close to stealing the show.

In the role of Juliet’s nurse, Leslie O’Carroll is a comic powerhouse. I noted Ms. O’Carroll’s performance in last year’s Reckless, and now I can say without doubt that she is one of the funniest actresses working in the Denver-Boulder area these days. In the more sober role of Friar Laurence, Erik Sandvold once again delivers in spades. The man just doesn’t know how to give a bad performance. And as Mercutio, Geoffrey Kent makes it look easy. His performance is by far the standout of the show. His take on the Queen Mab speech alone, hesitating just often enough and in just the rights moments so that he legitimately seems to be making it up as he goes along, is genius.

Umphrey’s McGee looks to odd inspirations for new album

We were also interested in the band’s Mountain Jam gig a week or so later, when they brought up The New Deal’s Dan Kurtz. Kurtz and the Umphrey’s guys go way back, of course, kicking off their careers at just around the same time in the late 1990s, but Kurtz is out on the road for the last time with the groundbreaking Canadian trio, who decided to call it a day after one last tour, appearing at the Fox Theatre the night before Umphrey’s plays

“Yeah, I know,” Cinninger laments. “We’ve been good buddies with those guys for about 10 years. It hurts to see them go. Some of my favorite driving music has been The New Deal, so yeah, they go way back for us.”

Every band has a different sell-by date, and as touring becomes more or less the only way to make a decent living in the music business these days, we wondered how Umphrey’s has managed to hold it together well into its second decade.

“Basically, the time off is just as important as the time on. So we really make sure that we allow the time and feel normal and recharge the batteries. Go back and see our families, and then after a few weeks we’re excited to go back out and hit it again for three or four weeks. It’s kind of an oddball schedule, but it works for us. You can only beat a horse so hard before he gets tired and doesn’t want to plow the field anymore.”

ed Rocks Amphitheatre is about to host a slam that will leave electronic music fans, and their glowsticks, spinning. The Glitch Mob is coming to take over with an allstar lineup Saturday, July 2, bringing together friends and sounds that range from psy-dub to post-rock.

“It feels appropriate that we’ve played all the places that are close to our hearts,” drummer Darren Shearer tells Boulder Weekly. “We feel good about where we’ve been in the last 13 years, and we feel good about leaving it where it is.”

Learning the wrong lessons

A

n employee of the Chicago public school system, ha-cha seventh-grade educator Elizabeth, portrayed by Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher, blows most of her classroom time showing her students (whose names she never learns) movies such as Lean on Me, Stand and Deliver and Dangerous Minds while she nurses a hangover or longs for her next bong hit.

Dumped by her fiancé, this craven schemer has returned to the job she thought she’d left behind. But a darling substitute teacher with money (played by Justin Timberlake, highly amusing in his nerdiness) gives Elizabeth a clear goal. She must raise $10,000 for a boob job designed to bag the new guy, even if the likable gym teacher ( Jason Segel) presents a more simpatico match.

So goes director Jake Kasdan’s moderately funny chronicle of misbehavior, written by two alums of The Office, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, and clearly influenced by Bad Santa. Bad Teacher offers considerable talent in its supporting ranks. Besides Timberlake and Segel, there’s Lucy Punch as Elizabeth’s rival, an aggressively chipper instructor by the name of Amy Squirrel, haunted by an unspecified breakdown in her recent past.

Phyllis Smith of The Office mutters some bone-dry asides as Elizabeth’s teacher colleague, a doormat so thrilled to spend time with this glamorously trashed-out character that she doesn’t care how badly she’s being patronized.

This leaves Diaz, for whom this role presents a welcome break from the sunny SoCal emblems she often

inhabits. She has her moments. At one point she comes up with a great, “what tha?” expression when Timberlake zooms up north of her lips and goes in for a chaste forehead kiss. But neither the script nor the performance ever quite gets around to making Elizabeth the kind of moral slob you love to hate. Diaz holds the screen, especially in motion, but rarely does she surprise you with a line reading, or her timing. Nor, for that matter, does director Kasdan (whose previous work includes TV’s Freaks and Geeks and the film Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story). His rhythms tend toward fits and starts.

On the other hand, at least Bad Teacher shows some nerve. It’s raunchy without constantly resorting to a game of “Can You Top This?” And it’s Diaz’s show, for better or worse, yet the strongest laughs are earned by Segel (he’s a prime reactor, though I wish he weren’t stuck doing quite so many B-grade reaction shots) and by Timberlake. Seduced, with purpose, by Elizabeth on a field trip, the gullible sub played by Timberlake has the film’s best single bit. It probably shouldn’t be detailed beyond mentioning that it involves two people, fully clothed, on a hotel bed. Timberlake is not afraid to make himself look like an idiot. He is, in fact, already the comic actor Diaz may yet become: a looker who knows how to use his looks to get away with murder.

Merchandise in lieu of a movie

C

ars 2 had every chance to improve upon the leisurely 2006 animated feature from Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios. Yet here we are, stuck with a merchandising assembly line in lieu of a movie. Despite its technical and design finesse, this ranks as Pixar’s weakest project to date, as well as the first from the animation powerhouse that can be described as craven.

Twelve films into the life and times of Pixar, it’s clear the Cars pictures are best assessed as the Disney stockholders’ pals, skewing young and younger, the ones that pay for masterworks such as Ratatouille, Wall-E and Up. Director John Lasseter’s sequel smooshes the vehicular ensemble of the first Cars into a nefarious James Bond universe, heavy on the missiles, ray guns, Gatling guns and electrocutions. Sound peculiar? It is peculiar.

by Michael Phillips It is also gabby. For a film so clearly dependent on its racing and chase sequences, which have their moments, certainly, in 3-D, Cars 2 never seems to shut up. Yet it’s virtually joke-free, beyond the sort of easy cultural stereotypes that recall the live-action road-rally outings of my youth: The Great Race or, lower down

the quality pole, Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies.

Lightning McQueen, once again voiced by Owen Wilson, spends much of the chaotic screenplay idling in the corner,

while his Radiator Springs pal Tow Mater (Larry the Cable Guy, delivering every line with the exact same cadence) takes the story lead. McQueen competes in three separate World Grand Prix races, one in Tokyo, one along the Italian Riviera coast and one in London. Meantime, Mater — a good ol’ boy embarrassment to his friend — is mistaken for a cunning American secret agent by Aston Martin superspy Finn McMissile, voiced by Michael Caine. McMissile and his field operative Holley Shiftwell risk their steering columns trying to crack a global conspiracy set up by the Thunderball-like prologue, set on a series of petroleum derricks at sea.

The tone and emphasis of Cars 2 veers off course from the start. Too many guns, for one thing. The whole thing is too weapons-dependent to be charming.

There’s plenty to watch here, and preteens who found the first Cars a bit pokey won’t

have the same reaction to this frenetic, globe-trotting follow-up. But I got little pleasure from seeing these cars (plus boats, and a plane) thrown into the spy thriller genre. It’s an intriguing story risk at best, a protracted stunt at worst. The greatest Pixar films have sampled, freeform, an unpredictable variety of moods and styles. Here the mash-ups refuse to jell, and even Michael Giacchino’s score sounds like someone less talented than Michael Giacchino composed it.

Cars 2 is preceded by a zippy Toy Story cartoon, “Hawaiian Vacation,” in which Woody and Buzz and friends treat Ken and Barbie to a faux-tropical getaway. In sharp contrast to Cars 2, it reminds you how durable and ingratiating the Toy Story gang remains well into its franchise.

Television Tour” was O’Brien’s answer to a contractual stipulation that banned his appearance on television, radio and the Internet for six months following his last show. Filmmaker Rodman Flender’s resulting documentary, Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, is an intimate portrait of an artist trained in improvisation, captured at the most improvisational time of his career. Local favorite fixin’s for the Fourth

But as you plan out your menu for the Fourth, Hosea Rosenberg, chef and owner of Bacon, Inc., a catering and consulting service, says to keep things simple.

The Top Chef season five winner says that whether he’s hosting a backyard barbecue or bringing a side dish to one of his friends’ houses, it isn’t July Fourth without hot dogs, potato salad and watermelon. Rosenberg also suggests corn on the cob as an easyto-prepare vegetable alternative for vegetarians and an ice cream sundae bar for dessert.

“I like to keep it simple,” Rosenberg says. “On the Fourth of July you want everyone to be happy, but it’s not like you have to be gourmet. Keep it simple so you can spend time with friends and family and not be chained to the stove.”

Michael Drazsnzak, executive chef at Colterra Food and Wine restaurant, says that he tries to do some of the food and drink preparation the day before so that he’ll have more time to spend with his guests.

Drazsnzak likes to serve pork ribs on the Fourth of July, and he usually smokes the meat overnight so that the next day he can just grill them on the barbecue alongside the bison burgers he prepares. This chef also grills chicken breasts for his guests who don’t eat red meat, as well as for children — Drazsnzak says kids love when this dish is paired with grilled vegetables or potato salad.

When it comes time to prepare beverages, Drazsnzak makes either sangria or margaritas.

“Sangria is a good way to go and really light and refreshing,” he says.

If he chooses the sangria, he prepares a mass quantity of the drink the night before his celebration by soaking fruit in red or white wine.

If he decides on the margaritas, Drazsnzak makes a big pitcher of the drink the morning of July Fourth and sets out glasses and ice so people can serve themselves.

Drazsnzak also likes to have some Izze sparkling juices on hand as a non-alcoholic option and beers made in local breweries.

“Beer in the cooler is an absolute must,” he says.

“There are so many great local microbreweries. Odell in Fort Collins is my favorite brewery.”

If he can find peaches that are firm enough, Drazsnzak grills them and serves them with homemade ice cream for dessert; other variations on this dish

include grilled apples or grilled pears with ice cream.

Other prominent Boulder County residents, even the non-chefs, have distinctive flavor preferences on the Fourth.

CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn says he likes to keep things simple on the Fourth of July so that he can enjoy spending time with his family, friends and the Boulder community at Ralphie’s Independence Day Blast.

Celebration attendees get to watch Ralphie the buffalo run, participate in a traditional sing-along, and witness a fireworks display.

Bohn says he has been attending the celebration at CU’s Folsom Field since he was a child.

“It’s always been a great celebration and way to celebrate our community and our patriotism, and see a good fireworks show,” Bohn says.

Before heading over to Folsom Field, Bohn says he attends the Wright Kingdom Real Estate’s July Fourth barbecue at Millennium Harvest House in Boulder. Bohn enjoys an Arnold Palmer and some hot dogs and hamburgers at the pre-fireworks barbecue, which the real estate company hosts every year for agents, clients and their families.

Like Bohn, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle also partakes in community-wide celebrations on the Fourth of July.

“Given my job, we normally participate in at least a couple of different parades — the one in Superior and Niwot,” Pelle says. “We ride our horses, and after that’s over we go home and relax on the patio and do a cookout.”

he most enjoyable meals aren’t just about the food — they’re also about the company, and in some instances, a sense of common purpose. Such is the case with Boulder’s Bácaro Venetian Taverna’s combination Sunday bike ride, lunch and fundraiser.

The ride is a monthly event that pulls together an amiable collection of cyclists of differing ages and abilities.

The experience began at 9 a.m. as riders gathered and enjoyed free-flowing cups of coffee and platters of warm pastry. I was particularly partial to the bitesized helpings of strudel and buttery croissants. Once participants fueled up on light breakfast, the ride began in earnest, with multiple mileage options to accommodate varying fitness levels.

It’s a no-drop ride, so trip leaders stop at strategic points to ensure no cyclist is left behind. This approach is reassuring to a dawdling recreational sort such as myself, especially since slowpoke best describes my riding style. On rides that aren’t nodrop, I irrationally fear my absence wouldn’t be noted for quite some time, until someone spotted a flock of raptors circling my motionless body.

Fortunately, my morbid fears were unwarranted, as the ride itself was a pleasant 37-mile jaunt through the plains, with a trek up Lefthand Canyon to the Ward turnoff. Upon returning to the restaurant, riders discovered that staff had prepared communal tables, complete with ample carafes of water, in anticipation of a family-style Italian meal.

The eagerly anticipated repast opened with slightly doughy slices of bread, which were redeemed by authentic sourdough flavor and crisp, pencil-sized breadsticks. Balsamic vinegar and olive oil made for a traditional and satisfying dip. Olive oil is an indicator of restaurant quality in my book, and Bácaro’s is best

he Bácaro lunch and ride benefits a variety of cycling-related nonprofits, with an emphasis on those that draw upon the sport as a tool for personal empowerment and growth. Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures (SMBA), a local nonprofit providing cycling summer camps for youth, was the beneficiary of the June ride. One of its initiatives is the Cycling Sisters camp, which pairs young girls with experienced female coaches.

described as delightfully full and fruity. But most importantly, an attentive staffer kept my water topped off, which was a welcome effort, given post-ride rehydration imperatives.

A steady procession of plates soon arrived, beginning with a refreshing salad of baby greens accented by slivers of flavor-packed grape tomatoes and a subtle vinaigrette with a hint of lemon. Given the communal nature of the meal, the best approach was to take small portions of each dish. The sheer number of choices guaranteed one’s cycling-induced hunger would be sated, and the constant introduction of dishes could be described as nearly relentless.

Standouts included fried calamari, crisp and delicately battered, and served with luxurious aioli and tangy marinara. Impeccably al dente tubular pasta came sauced with tomato, zucchini and silky eggplant.

Proteins included tender pulled pork and delicately

sauced white fish. Bruschetta featured fresh diced tomatoes to excellent effect, and rosemary-scented potato wedges contributed hearty heft to the meal.

The total cost of the experience was $35.79, including tax, tip and a soft drink. While not inexpensive, it’s a reasonable tariff considering the quantity and quality of the food and ride. Additionally, a portion of the receipts went to support Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures, a local nonprofit promoting youth cycling.

The brainchild of Executive Chef Fabio Flagiello, who also wore the hats of genial host and ride leader, this unique experience earns itself the culinary equivalent of the King of the Mountains leader’s jersey. une, where in the H-E-doublehockey-sticks did you go? You took so long to grace us with your presence, then, just like that, you disappeared faster than a bottle of whiskey at Charlie Sheen’s breakfast table.

Now that summer is officially here, we need a tasty treat to refresh and remind us to slow down and enjoy the season, to take us back to a time when ladies wore big hats and sipped lemonade on the front porch all afternoon. All right, I don’t know why this dessert has conjured up those images for me. I guess I’m imagining myself in an episode of Designing Women, and I like it.

This week’s treat is White Chocolate Raspberry Lime Pie. Can’t you just picture Suzanne Sugarbaker digging into that little gem? I realize these references only make sense if you actually watched the show, but if you didn’t, because you were running, hiking, biking or doing anything better than watching TV, well, don’t worry about it, you will still enjoy this delectable recipe.

I think there is nothing more refreshing than lemon or Key lime pie in the hot summer days. This pie is just a little twist on Key lime — maybe a big twist, as it isn’t really Key lime at all. I use regular limes, but I use the same type of recipe as you would for Key lime.

It leaves it a tad less tart, and they sure are easier to squeeze than those other little fellas.

After it cools, we pile on the fresh raspberries and drizzle with your favorite type of white chocolate. All this in a graham cracker crust just screams summer, patios, good conversation and champagne.

I do hear the screams for champagne all year, but something about summer nights just makes it taste better. While you do need your oven for this, your house should survive the temperatures. I suggest making it in the morning before the heat sets in, as it tastes better when it is thoroughly chilled all day, anyway.

This dessert is also great for a lazy Sunday brunch treat, or after a nice summertime salad. A real all-around winner.

So, go grab your big hat, pour your-

self a glass of champagne, and lounge the day away. And, yeah, enjoy a nice slice of the best pie you’ll have all summer — until my next pie recipe, of course.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it, and invite me over when it’s done.

White Chocolate Raspberry Lime Pie Graham Cracker Crust 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1 tbsp. granulated sugar 6 tbsp. unsalted butter (melted)

Filling 4 egg yolks 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14ounce can) Zest from one medium lime 1/2 cup lime juice (about 3-4 medium sized limes) Pinch of salt 1 cup fresh raspberries 3.5 to 4 ounces white chocolate Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In medium bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs and sugar. Pour melted butter over top and mix. Pat down evenly over bottom of 9-inch pie plate, going up the sides. Bake for 7-8 minutes. Take out, set on wire rack to cool. Keep oven on.

In medium bowl, whisk egg yolks.

Add condensed milk, whisk until well combined. Mix in lime zest, lime juice and salt. Combine well. Let set about 15 minutes.

Pour into slightly cooled pie shell.

Bake for 15 minutes, until pie filling is set, but center still a bit jiggly. Take out and let cool on counter. Place in refrigerator for three or four hours, until well chilled.

Take out and top with fresh raspberries. Melt white chocolate in double boiler over low heat, or slowly in microwave. Drizzle over top of raspberries.

Place back in refrigerator until set.

When ready to serve, take out and cut into slices. Enjoy!

Note: you can use lime juice in a bottle, or Key lime juice if you prefer more of a tart flavor. If using the limes, roll on counter first to help with the flow of the lime juice.

“One of my favorite things to do is make shish kabob with steak and peppers and potatoes and marinate them overnight, and when we get home, toss ’em on the grill,” says Pelle. “It’s kind of like a ready-to-go barbecue meal.”

“All of the guests bring something, so it’s always a feast,” Osborne says. “My sister and granddaughters make an amazing red, white and blue jello mold and an American flag cake with whipped cream frosting, blueberries for the stars … and strawberries for red stripes.”

Osborne says other Fourth of July dishes include her own barley salad, the turkey her friend Crystal makes, and homemade peach ice cream that the Osbornes make at their cabin. She says that while there’s typically lemonade, beer and wine on hand at the party, her son-in-law’s mint iced tea is her favorite beverage.

Heavier, bulky gear is being eschewed in favor of lighter, sleeker gear. The bomber gear that can withstand anything Mother Nature throws at it is being looked at as overkill for mountains that don’t have “Everest” in their name. And clunky and expensive stoves are being ditched for stoves made out of soda cans (or, Boulder being a college town, ones made from PBR cans).

This change has been given many names: lightweight backpacking, ultralight backpacking, dirt bagging, minimalism, fast packing and more.

But whatever name this trend goes by, it means taking lighter gear and not being burdened with heavy loads. Backpacking is not looked at as a slow and plodding way to enjoy the outdoors, but rather a way to get deeper into the backcountry with packs not much heavier than a day hiker’s.

Backpacking is not seen as a trudge, but a joy.

Getting lighter does not have to be synonymous with expensive gear, though. A few simple changes can lighten your load without lightening the wallet.

Why take a Nalgene bottle? At 6 ounces each, they are heavy. Take a sports drink bottle instead.

Only 1 ounce empty, and it comes with a drink.

Remember those blue foam pads you used on your first camping trips? Well they still work. At $10 or so from discount and army surplus stores, they are lighter and more durable than the inflatable foam pads.

If mainly hiking on trails, check out DriDucks brand rain gear. A suit with a jacket and pants costs $20. Waterproof and breathable. Not really meant for off-trail hiking or rougher outdoor pursuits, but just fine for climbing to Pawnee Pass. see ENLIGHTENMENT Page 48
