Channeling McCarthyism (Re: “The devil and Lenin in Delaware,” Danish Plan, Sept. 23.) In his efforts to support the candidacy of Christine O’Donnell, for whom the term “bimbo” would be a compliment, Mr. Danish has descended to an old and deplorable technique of ascribing Marxist leanings to her opponent, Chris Coons.

Unlike Miss O’Donnell’s public service record, solely confined to two failed attempts to win elective office, Mr. Coons has established a solid track record of capable service as county commissioner. If Mr. Coons had any Marxist tendencies, his policies and decisions would have demonstrated such influence. The total lack of any evidence of this influence demonstrates that the allegations coming from Mr. Danish are totally specious.

It is, indeed, a pity that the eloquent and well-read Paul Danish would go back half a century to adopt the despicable tactics of Sen. Joe McCarthy. It is even worse that Mr. Danish now appears to be channeling McCarthy’s late sidekick, Roy Cohn.

Perhaps in a future column Danish will explain how he arrived at this figure. If memory serves, the number has been associated with the John Birch Society and other ultra-right-wing tracts dating from the 1960s. That

Danish would resort to utterings damning what he considers the “Marxist” world should surprise no one. He has been writing bellicose, militaristic, antisocialist/anti-commie columns — much of it pure Democratic Party newsbabble — for the past 40 years. He has advocated violent military solutions to foreign policy issues on numerous occa-

Well, not to worry, Congress peoples, for I have the perfect cure for your job grievances: become coal miners for a while.

Talk about hard work, bad conditions, poor pay and unappreciative bosses! Then there’s that irritating thing about being killed on the job.

You might remember that 29 miners were killed in April in a horrific explosion inside West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch mine, owned by Massey Energy.

Massey, a $2 billion-a-year giant, is notorious for putting its workers down in inexcusably unsafe coal mines. Last year, it was cited for more than 500 safety violations — and it had just received two more citations at Upper Big Branch on the very day of the

and-death legislation to passage. Their shameful work stoppage is meant to stall any action until after the November elections.

Wealthy mine owners, you see, are pouring money into this year’s Republican efforts to win control of the Senate, in exchange for assurances that a GOP Senate would water down or kill these vitally needed safety reforms.

What a disgrace! And they wonder why the public has no respect for them. I say that every softhanded, pampered Congress critter who opposes these reforms should be sent to work in the mines for at least two years.

capitalist-oriented reactionary governments (include the UK and the United States here), have killed about 100 million people over the past 100 years. For example, about 20 million Soviet citizens were murdered by the German Nazis and their fascist allies during World War II. Massive atrocities were perpetrated by imperial Japan against the Chinese in WWII. The U.S. military committed horrendous atrocities against the Japanese at Hiroshima/Nagasaki and during the many firestorm raids conducted against Japanese cities. And these are just starters. I haven’t mentioned Vietnam’s anticolonial struggle for independence; the Anglo/American invasion of Iraq/Iran under the U.K./USA-installed Shah and SAVAK; the Nazis’ murder of some 500,000 of their own citizens; World War I and its ghastly killing fields as capitalist nations duked it out over territorial expansion and market primacy; the Armenian atrocities; and Africa’s anti-colonial wars of independence.

The list goes on and on, and very few instances involve Danish’s “Marxists.”

To describe his feeble attempt at comic writing as one-sided is an understatement of the first magnitude. It appears that either he is oblivious to world history or he has a proverbial ax to grind when it comes to “Marxists.”

Protect cannabis care When Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter signed House Bill 1284, he created a regulatory system to ensure safe access to medicinal cannabis and completely changed the business landscape of the medical marijuana community. This bill’s signing into law forced a marriage between growers and dispensaries. A marriage of inconvenience for some, it has served as a great opportunity for others to implement a highly efficient business model. The regulation passed requires each dispensary to cultivate at least 70 percent of its on-hand medicinal cannabis, thus vertically integrating the supply chain. Essentially, this shift in business model eliminated the inefficiency of buying medicinal cannabis from businesses operating as wholesalers.

While each medical marijuana center incurs substantial overhead in cultivating its cannabis, the overall net cost for the center is substantially less than it would be if medicine were purchased from wholesalers. As such, the overall inventory cost for each dispensary has significantly dropped. Unfortunately, the savings has yet to pass to the consumer.

As it stands, some medical marijuana centers have overextended themselves and face extraordinary debt interest, while others simply are operating as cash cow businesses. Rather than ineffi6 September 30, 2010

ciency in the market, it is this reader’s opinion that savings should be passed to the consumer. There is no reason an individual on a fixed income, struggling to pay for alternative health care, should subsidize dispensary owners selling a week’s supply of medicine for $100 when the true price is closer to $60.

Our country is already reeling to figure out how to control the cost of conventional health care, and there is no reason consumers should allow this industry to follow their lead.

County on wrong road Boulder County has money for certain projects that were agreed to during the years when people thought the county was using its normal tax receipts for maintaining all of its roads. There is now the issue of subdivisions forming special taxing districts to tax themselves in order to fix and repave these roads, the traditional duty of county government. As most of us now know, in 1995 the commissioners relieved themselves of the duty to maintain subdivision roads for other projects.

One of these projects is the resurfacing of Cherryvale Road. This past spring, the neighborhood had meetings with the transportation department and county commissioners about what is the best way to do this considering the residents of Cherryvale. The plan originally presented to the neighborhood was soundly rejected as too ambitious for a neighborhood where the houses and trees were close to the road. It includes a six-foot-wide path for the occasional use of a few families, which was never part of the original vote. Recently the transportation department sent us a letter saying that they had compromised on the plans. The letter indicated very little change from the original plan, this despite opposition to the majority of the plan by more than 95 percent of the people who live on the affected section of the road.

For some reason the county commissioners are letting the transportation department dictate this project even though the commissioners are not happy with the rural nature of the neighborhood being diminished.

One suggestion is to limit the amount of money to repave Cherryvale Road, adding, perhaps, commonly used three-and-a-half-foot-wide shoulders instead of five feet, remove the six-footwide path and use the savings to help pay for everyone’s subdivision road maintenance. I’m sure there are other projects that could be downsized or delayed until the county gets back on see LETTERS Page 9

A regent race that actually matters

ost people around the state don’t know what a regent is, much less what a regent does.

So when it comes time to elect one, they either skip that ballot item or choose someone based on political party.

During one election when I was in my 20s, I even voted for a regent simply because his last name was Beer.

And in most years, that’s OK. After all, the governing board of the state’s flagship university doesn’t affect the everyday life of most Coloradans.

But this year is different. This year, voters have a chance to give Democrats the majority on the University of Colorado Board of Regents for the first time in three decades.

Currently, the board is controlled by Republicans, 5-4. Three positions are up for election this November, and two of those seats are expected to stay with their current parties, given political dynamics in the First and Fourth Congressional Districts. The third race, however, a statewide contest between incumbent Steve Bosley, a Republican, and CU law professor Melissa Hart, a Democrat, is a toss-up. Hart says she and Bosley are in a statistical dead heat.

(Oh, yeah, and Libertarian Jesse Wallace is also running.)

If Hart wins, the board will turn blue for the first time since 1980, according to election results documented in CU historian Bud Davis’ Glory Colorado: Volume II. You might ask why it matters.

Surely partisan politics never rears its ugly head when it comes to simply running a university, right?

Wrong.

Bosley is probably correct when he says the majority of issues the regents deal with are not decided on party-line votes, but that doesn’t mean that faculty, staff, students and the public haven’t felt the effects of having a Republicandominated board for 30 years. Hart says the board should be focused on affordable education, not “weird, extreme political issues.”

In past years there have been numerous initiatives driven by rightwing agendas, many of which have trickled down from national conservative think tanks like the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.

There is the periodic questioning of whether student fees are used disproportionately to fund liberal guest speakers. Republican board members consistently ask whether the faculty’s teaching load is heavy enough, and their antisee REGENT RACE Page 8

One of the party’s biggest boosters, Boulder County Democratic Party Chair Deb Gardner, wants to fill Mr. Pommer’s seat in State House District 11. To do this would be more of the same failure this state and country has experienced in the last two years under almost complete Democrat rule.

It’s no mystery why Democrat candidates are running from their own party and leaders. But let us never forget that political operatives — including Ms. Gardner, who is basically Boulder County’s top left-wing political hack — couldn’t ride the coattails enough of the failed state and national administrations after the 2006 and 2008 elections. But now they want us to forget all that and pretend they are something new and better? Their “hope and change” has been abysmal.

But specifically with Ms. Gardner, her support of the hateful anti-religious group in Longmont who pushed the LifeBridge Christian Church

development plan into the hands of a neighboring and competing city can’t be easily forgotten. The church relocation this group fought will still move forward, except Longmont and HD 11 voters won’t benefit one iota from it.

And now residents, including even Democrats and independents, have about had enough of Boulder County’s endless harassment of Rocky Mountain Christian Church (RMCC), which shares some of the same detractors as LifeBridge — all political supporters of Ms. Gardner.

HD 11 is a terribly gerrymandered district, and Boulder can pretty much decide the race if they want to. I suggest you show a little independence from what is expected of you and ask yourself if voting the party line is such a wise choice this time around.

State women’s prison confronted by ACLU, changes policy on strip searches

s a result of pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of Colorado, female inmates in Colorado’s prisons will no longer be subjected to an invasive strip search procedure that many inmates found humiliating, overly invasive and even traumatic.

Boulder Weekly reported on the issue in July after receiving 10 hand-written letters from inmates expressing distress and outrage over the procedure, which required them to strip, part their labia and draw back their clitoral hoods while standing with one foot on a bench or chair or sitting back in a chair with their legs spread (“Stripped of dignity,” July 15). Inmates were required to hold this pose while guards examined their genitals at close range with a flashlight to make sure they weren’t hiding contraband.

Inmates can be strip-searched at any time, but strip searches are mandatory under certain circumstances — upon initial arrival at the prison; any time an inmate has been outside the prison; after contact visits with family, even children; and after working in a location inside the prison that includes items considered to be contraband in an inmate’s cell.

But this procedure, nicknamed the “labia lift” by inmates and put in place at Denver Women’s Correctional Facility (DWCF) by the Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) last January, was so extreme that it was “essentially unheard of,” according to David Shapiro, a staff attorney with ACLU’s National Prison Project in Washington.

Shapiro says he first read about the practice in Boulder Weekly, and the ACLU then moved quickly to end it, contacting DOC directly and putting out an online call to action asking the public to voice its outrage via e-mails to DOC. ACLU sent a letter on Aug. 24 to Ari Zavaras, director of DOC, charging that the searches were conducted even when guards had no reason to suspect an inmate was concealing contraband and raised “grave concerns” under the Fourth and Eighth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

ban on cruel and unusual punishment says that you can’t inflict unnecessary pain for pain’s sake,” Shapiro says. “In legal terms, there can’t be an infliction of unnecessary and wanton suffering. There are [court] cases that hold that certain types of strip searches can be unnecessary and wanton.”

For example, courts have ruled that having male guards pat down female inmates can violate an inmate’s constitutional rights. Although courts have upheld some kinds of strip searches, they might be inclined to find against a policy as extreme as the “labia lift,” he says.

“It’s not a policy that is necessary for security or really serves any sort of security function,” Shapiro says. “There are other forms of strip search that are not nearly as invasive, but are just as effective.

The Colorado policy was also an outlier among state departments of corrections.

It was essentially unheard of. All of that combined to make it very clear that this was really a policy that was inflicting a lot of pain on prisoners and just wasn’t necessary.”

An estimated 80 percent of female inmates have experienced sexual violence.

The single biggest indicator of future criminal behavior among women is childhood sexual abuse. Inmates with a past that includes sexual violence felt deeply traumatized by being forced to endure the “labia lift” search.

“These searches had a devastating impact on prisoners and threatened to undermine rehabilitation,” Shapiro says.

In letters to Boulder Weekly, some inmates described having panic attacks or feelings of extreme violation. One refused to strip and was threatened with pepper spray by a guard. Others curtailed visits from family and gave up other activities out of fear of being strip-searched.

The new procedure outlined by DOC Sept. 24 requires inmates to bend over, squat and cough, a policy in line with jails and departments of corrections across the U.S. Shapiro says he has received written confirmation from an inmate that the invasive searches have been eliminated.

The ACLU plans to stay in contact with DOC and inmates about the issue.

With its livelihood on the line, one Gold Hill family fought back

a hot Tuesday afternoon, and half of Colorado Mountain Ranch lies in ruins, one of many homes and businesses destroyed by the Fourmile Canyon fire that torched more than 6,000 acres in the foothills surrounding Boulder. The taste of ash is in the air as Mike Walker, whose family has owned the ranch for generations, repairs the blackened tractor he used to save many of his buildings from the fire that burned his home, barn and storage units to the ground. A team of volunteers from the East Idaho Southern Baptist Association picks through the rubble that used to be the Walker house for knickknacks, or anything at all that might have survived the blaze.

As Walker’s wife, Lynn, surveys the remains of her home, a volunteer approaches and presents her with a statuette of the Virgin Mary.

“Oh fantastic!” Lynn squeals.

She explains that one of her oldest friends, a Catholic, gave her the figurine decades ago. She places it on an ashy stump next to a small metal bull and a hammer salvaged from the ruins, and the volunteer returns to the pile of rubble that used to be the Walkers’ living room.

The damage to the ranch is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but it could have been worse. As firefighters fled the ranch when team-building course. “I always thought it wouldn’t be that quick,” Lynn Walker says. “I grabbed a few photos off the wall. I grabbed some underwear, and I loaded the dog [and the cat], and I think that was it.”

As his family evacuated, Mike elected to stay at the ranch and do what he could to fight the fire. For him, leaving wasn’t an option.

“As soon as I was 16 years old, I was told [by my parents] I could go up and live on the ranch year-round,” he says. “[The ranch] is like a family member. I’ve been working on this place since I was 16 years old. I’ve got my whole life wrapped up in it.

“I didn’t even consider leaving,” he adds.

Fire was blazing towards the ranch from the west and the south, and Lynn realized she had to leave immediately with her granddaughter. She drove her truck out through the ranch’s entrance and went to the family’s fall pasture up the road from the ranch, where Rosie and company were tying up horses.

But soon falling ash started hitting the animals, forcing the family to move the animals again. Then another problem arose: While the ranch has 35 horses, the family has only a four-horse trailer and a 16-horse trailer with which to transport them. So while Rosie helped load up the trailers, Lynn was frantically calling other liveries outside the burn area to see if they could help transport the horses.

Others immediately responded to her call for help, and soon there were more trailers than they could use. By this time, sheriffs had already blocked off some of the roads, and a deputy redirected the extra trailers to other stables in need of evacuation.

Rosie Walker and her boyfriend TJ were able to take all the horses up to Peaceful Valley on the Peak-toPeak Highway. When authorities declared that area to be in the evacuation zone, they again moved the horses, this time to the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. They’ve since moved most of the horses down to a pasture in Castle Rock.

Lynn dropped off Jade at her father’s place in Longmont, dropped off the animals, and turned back towards the ranch.

“I was thinking, ‘I gotta go back up there. I gotta get Mike,’” Lynn says.

She couldn’t leave her husband to fight the fire alone. Plus, she had his pain pills. Several years ago, her husband had knee replacement surgery in both

Lynn and Rosie drove up to the ranch to join Mike, who had spent the day fighting the fire with occasional help from various fire departments. The Walkers arrived around midnight.

“There was a lot of fire, little flame-ups everywhere,” Lynn Walker says. “So we drove around calling out the windows, ‘Mike, Mike!’ And when we got to the office he shouted, ‘Hey, I’m here.’ He had just sat down.”

Mike Walker had spent the day fighting the fire with the only tools he had: a small green tractor and his bare hands.

After his family left, Mike began doing what he could to keep the fire away from the structures. Firefighters from Gold Hill and Boulder were lighting protective fires — called “backburns” — to prevent the fire from spreading to the structures.

Chris Finn, chief of the all-volunteer Gold Hill Fire Protection District, arrived after the backburns had already cleared part of the area.

“There was almost no humidity, and the winds were 30 to 50 mph, blowing every direction of the compass,” he says. “A firefighter’s worst nightmare.”

He and his crew went up to the ranch to help manage the backburns. But when they arrived, the winds had changed directions, and the fire was too close.

Thinking of his people’s safety, Finn made the decision to pull back to town and leave the ranch to burn.

With firefighters in retreat, Mike stayed up at the ranch. There was a cabin surrounded by grass that was close to the lodge and in the line of the fire coming from the south. The fire tore up the hill and traveled around the cabin and ignited the porch, which faces the lodge. Mike realized the lodge was in danger.

“All I had to fight with was that doggone tractor,” he says. “If I’d had a big old front-loader, I would have just pushed that thing away. I was beating that thing with a rug.”

Lacking larger equipment, he took his tractor, only equipped with a small front-loader, and ripped the flaming porch off the cabin. Firewood they had stored underneath the cabin also caught fire, so he used the rug to beat that out as well.

Mike and Lynn, along with help from various friends and employees who snuck through the roadblocks, spent the next five days hauling water and fighting flare-ups around the ranch. When the flames died down, they had saved the office, the lodge, and two cabins from certain destruction.

Now, weeks after the fire’s containment, the Walkers again have unfettered access to the ranch. There’s seemingly endless work to do, and small clouds of ash gather around your feet as they crunch on top of the torched grass. But the Walkers are slowly beginning the clean-up process and are grateful for the help they’ve already received.

“Hey, you people are amazing,” Mike says to one of the Southern Baptist volunteers as the group leaves for the day.

“Well, we’ll be here tomorrow,” the worker replies.

The Walkers have hauled off numerous loads full of scrap metal and have salvaged what they could from the rubble of their house. Their possessions were “severely underinsured,” in Lynn’s words, so they don’t expect much help from their insurance company. There’s much rebuilding left, but the Walkers are upbeat.

“We’re absolutely doing camp next summer,” Lynn says.

Aquaponics sustains edible addictions

s a word, “aquaponics” was invented sometime in the 1970s, but as a practice it’s been around since ancient times among the Chinese, Aztecs and other cultures.

While it may sound like an aquatic exercise class, the only things swimming in this case could be your dinner.

Think of it as pairing hydroponics — growing plants without soil — with fish farming.

“It’s quite addictive,” says Sylvia Bernstein. “You start with one fish tank and find yourself adding another or stepping up to bigger ones.”

Bernstein and her husband, Alan, had two advantages when they started an aquaponics system in their north Boulder backyard in early 2009. Sylvia was one of the founders of AeroGrow International, a hydroponics company in Gunbarrel. And the Bernsteins had a small greenhouse already being used for hydroponic gardening.

But they insist that aquaponics is simple enough for even a novice to enjoy with a basic system.

“There’s not a heck of a lot to do once you’re set up,” says Alan, a retired computer science business consultant. “It does take some discipline and a few minutes a day to maintain.”

The Bernsteins use the mediabased style of aquaponics system, as opposed to the raft-based system common with large commercial operations.

Their tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beets, chard, strawberries and herbs grow in a layer of expanded clay pebbles. Plants filter water for the fish in a separate tank, and the fish waste is converted into fertilizer by beneficial microbes and red worms in the plants’ growing medium.

Feeding the fish and doing maintenance checks takes about five minutes a day, the Bernsteins say.

What you raise is up to you, although some things — particularly with the fish — grow better than others in such a system.

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, a starter aquaponic set-up can be very inexpensive. A worldwide aquaponic community makes it easy to get advice from sources as varied as the public library or YouTube. Sylvia is among many growers who share their experiences on online publications, blogs and forums.

“I’ve seen systems scavenged from old bathtubs and recycled barrels,” she says. “For less than $100 you can make one out of plumbing pieces.”

If you can spend a little more and want to get started immediately, the Bernsteins recently started The Aquaponic Source, a business that sells equipment and even fish chow.

The Bernsteins are hooked on their produce, but they admit the tilapia presented an unexpected challenge.

“We have yet to eat any of ’em,” Sylvia confesses. “We didn’t name them, but it just felt too personal eating animals we feed every day.

When they get to be too many, I have to give them away.”

Ads on tap for shattered DREAM Somewhat lost in the recent hubbub over the Republicans in Congress blocking the defense bill that would have repealed the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was that the DREAM Act was also attached to the bill’s fate.

For those of you who have been living under a rock, or simply prefer not to think about anything related to them dagburn “illegals,” the DREAM Act would allow green cards to be issued to undocumented immigrants who, among other things, have a clean record and agree to attend college or enroll in the military.

So now a handful of groups have pooled their resources to launch a Spanishlanguage advertising campaign to make sure all of those Latino constituents don’t vote for the jerks who blocked the dreams of their grown children who have graduated from high school but can’t go to college or get a job.

The Service Employees International Union, Mi Familia Vota Civic Participation Campaign and America’s Voice are launching a $300,000 radio ad buy in nine markets across the country, including Denver, where Latino voters will play a decisive role in contested races this November and two years from now.

There’s also a voter mobilization effort in several Colorado counties, including Boulder, in which organizers are urging Hispanics to vote — against Republicans.

“Latino voters must take stock in who is with us and who is against us,” says Jessie Ulibarri, Colorado state director of the Mi Familia Vota campaign.

Ouch. Good thing them illegals can’t vote, or them right-wing rednecks would really have a problem!

Corn sugar and death sticks Names matter. Just ask the Corn Refiners Association (CRA). They’re the folks who bring us high-fructose corn syrup, which can be found in everything from breakfast cereals to soda to processed meats.

Some health advocates believe that high-fructose corn syrup behaves differently in the body than sucrose and glucose and plays a role in the fattening of America and in the increase in diseases such as diabetes. As a result, health conscious consumers have shifted away from products that contain high-fructose corn syrup.

Since 1999, annual consumption of high-fructose corn syrup has dropped from 45.4 pounds per person to 35.7 pounds per person. That’s a decrease of 21 percent, roughly the same decline over the same period of time as cigarette sales.

The CRA, which has contacted this paper in the past to explain why we should quit saying mean things about high-fructose corn syrup, isn’t taking this lying down. They’ve petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to permit them to call their product “corn sugar” rather than high-fructose corn syrup. Apparently, they hope this verbal sleight of hand will enable their product to appear on food labels without consumers realizing it’s there. Oh, sure, they’ll tell you that their product was named back at a time when consumers glommed processed foods and no one worried about having unnecessary sugars in their mac and cheese. They’ll tell you, too, that “corn sugar” is really no different than cane sugar or any other kind of refined sugar. (We don’t buy that.)

But what this amounts to is an attempt to trick consumers into eating something that many have consciously opted to eliminate from their diets. And that’s just dirty.

Let’s hope the FDA, which too often functions as an arm of the corporate food and drug industry, doesn’t permit it.

Or let’s make a deal. They can call their product “corn sugar,” but only if tobacco companies are required to refer cigarettes as “death sticks.”

ew people would have blamed the Deftones if the group’s new CD, Diamond Eyes, had been a dark and depressing album. The fact is, much of the past decade has not been kind to the group.

First there was the long and difficult ordeal that was the making of the group’s 2006 CD, Saturday Night Wrist, a project that began more than three years earlier and saw tensions in the band reach a point where the group nearly fractured.

Then in November 2008, bassist Chi Cheng was left in a coma from injuries suffered in a car accident. He has survived the accident, but his recovery has been slow.

“He’s out of his coma, but he’s still in a semi-conscious state, which means he wakes up and he sleeps, like a pattern that he opens his eyes and things like that. But he has yet to really communicate yet,” Deftones singer Chino Moreno reported in a recent phone interview. “That’s what we’re working on right now. We’ve got some really great doctors that are working on him, and we’ve kind

of tried some experimental therapies as far as trying to get him to fully wake up and communicate. The doctor actually that’s working on him now has an 85 percent success rate. But the thing is he’s actually on the east coast right now, and Chi is here on the west. That’s the next thing we’re trying to do is trying to get him out there so he can be under this doctor’s care full time.”

What’s more, a CD the band had nearly finished before Cheng’s accident — called Eros — was shelved and the band instead started from scratch on the newly released Diamond Eyes.

But despite the many tough times, Diamond Eyes doesn’t sound like the work of a dispirited band. In fact, it’s very much the opposite. The band sounds energized — perhaps even reborn — and the lyrical direction of the new CD is decidedly positive. And Moreno says that mood was not an accident, nor was it unintended.

It’s not just the attitude that seems similar in listening to Diamond Eyes. The music also in some ways recalls Around The Fur. The CD as a whole possesses the signatures that made Around The Fur (and the Deftones music in general) stand out in the first place — the mix of thick angular guitar riffs melting into melodic choruses, coupled with a fierce rhythmic attack and fierce vocals powering many of the songs through the verses. The group, though, sounds especially inspired on Diamond Eyes, delivering some of its strongest songwriting on tracks like “Royal,” “You’ve Seen The Butcher” and “Prince.”

The Deftones will have a prime tour to showcase the new material as the group fills the middle slot between Mastodon and headliner Alice In Chains on this falls “Black Diamond Skye” tour.

Moreno says it’s the rare perfect bill for his band.

“I still think it’s hard for me to kind of think who do we go and open up for that sells more tickets than us, and that we feel comfortable opening up for as far as does this really work for the fan who wants to come see us play?” Moreno says. “Do they really care about seeing this other band as well and visa versa?

And I think all the bands that are on there complement each other as far as being rock bands, but having different niches in the rock world, different decades even. It feels good. It feels like it’s going to be fun. Both bands are good friends of ours that we’ve known over the years, and we’re fans of both of their music, so I think it will be great.”

OK Go makes the best out of a digital situation

T

he day started with a press release chirping gleefully in our inbox that OK Go’s new video for “White Knuckles” was in its last hours of labor and heading for its cyber C-section.

Before long, The Atlantic writer Andrew Sullivan had embedded the video in his “Daily Dish” blog, with a bonus link to Gizmodo’s behind-the-scenes column.

Huffington Post linked it off its secondary sidebar by mid-afternoon. In a day or two, it was front and center at CNN.com, elbowing its way alongside Boehner’s Pledge to America and Lindsay’s perp-walk du jour.

The Chicago-bred, L.A.-hostaged power pop quartet’s assault on the YouTube empire pinged and slammed its way through the New Frontier like a crazy marble aimed at smashing TVs and fluttering umbrellas and bounding mannequins, and in less time than it took Facebook to put the mouse back in the wheel, the whole friggin’ world was enraptured by dogs and white buckets and standardissue OK Go weird-ass choreography.

And a goat, says Gizmodo?

“It’s a little past three quarters of the way through the video,” explains band co-founder Tim Nordwind.

“Damian [Kulash] and I are doing this walk-and-heel move with two German Shepherds … and if you watch closely, you see Andy, our guitarist, come out with a goat basically dragging him across the screen.”

This piece of video madness, of course, comes as the follow-up to the Rube Goldberg machine mix of “This Too Shall Pass,” released late last winter, a frenetic bit of (ostensibly) one-take, domino-effect, collapsing machine madness, one of the most engagingly ambitious music videos of all time. “White Knuckles,” by comparison, features the band doing synchronized choreography over buckets and cheesy swiveling

lounge chairs with a dozen or so canines, all of whom are brilliantly trained and eerily in on the joke. And one of the band’s favorite causes is rescued dog adoption.

“They were two very different experiences and two very different challenges,” Nordwind says. “The Rube Goldberg machine video took six months to make, and that was six straight months. The dog video, we had the concept for it five years ago, and we finally met some animal trainers who understood the vision and the sort of guerilla-style, DIY ethic that we make things with, about a year ago. And it took about six weeks to make over the course of a year.”

It’s been said that the band, now in its 13th year of tenure, is re-inventing the craft of the music video by chisels and wallops, in part due to its endearingly flowcharted geekiness, but also in its direct-to-tape DIY authenticity.

They eschew the sales-pitch commercial veneer gloss that has weighed down the art form since its adolescence and coax the art form past the big-studio/ MTV paradigm into the living-room (or treadmillColorado’s award-winning restaurant and music venue for adults of all ages. Consistent with this crusade, consciously applied or not, singer Kulash recently published an op-ed in the Washington Post in support of net neutrality, agitating for action on the part of FCC Commissioner Julius Genachowski to essentially declare, as a third and final vote, the Internet a public utility, legislating away Google and Verizon’s plans for a “tiered” Internet highway, where the big players — like movie studios, news orgs, Proctor and Gamble — would presumably have the fast lane to themselves, and little guys like power pop trios making dog videos are relegated to bumping along with three bad tires on the low-bandwidth

shoulder.

“While he was writing it, I would sort of read drafts of it and we’d talk about it,” says Nordwind of the piece. “It’s something we all feel strongly about. … I think the Internet is in real danger of becoming like cable TV or something, where people have to pay to have their content on there. Which sort of goes against what I believe the Internet is all about. … I think it should be left as a free and public space.”

And fair enough, these are the guys whose official videos, Nordwind estimates, boast easily more than 100 million views on YouTube.

We agree. We also wonder: Do you ever have to remind people you’re actually a band?

“What propels us out of bed every morning is the love of making things. …We’ve always had the tendency to kind of have these art projects that are spawned by the music we’re making, and that’s followed us our entire career,” Norwind answers. “And the music has always been the foundation to create the world around us.”

genres she plays in are varied — Drums & Guns was jazz-infused with some rock ’n’ roll, her solo piano shows are perfect for cafes and dimly lit lounges, and she also plans to write a pop musical — she is certain about where her future lies.

“I went to Burning Man, and that sort of completed everything because I was surrounded by art and music and all these amazing people, and I just came back with a completely new attitude,” she says. “I feel so free and confident that my music’s gonna work. I have no fear about that.”

The experience made an impression on her creatively, but she had a ball, too.

In fact, she still is.

“I had a gig the other night, and every minute of it was so much fun,” she says. “You don’t even keep track of

the time after a while.”

That sort of joy is one of the aspects of music that Jaworski treasures most and strives to evoke in her performances, which makes sense, considering her life sometimes feels like a musical.

“I have been singing — my mom says — since before I was 1,” she says.

“She has a recording on an eight-track of me singing ‘You are My Sunshine’ with her, so it’s sort of like breathing for me. I sing all the time and I don’t even notice. People will be like, ‘Ummm, you’re singing right now, Kate,’ and I won’t even realize it. It’s just natural for me. I almost feel like I don’t have a choice.

“I really get passionate about my songs. I am so in the moment when I play, and I feel like the whole room can feel that. The audience is part of the song in a way, and I believe they can feel my passion and my joy. I like to be genuine and feel every note I play and every lyric I sing, because people can tell when you’re faking it. It’s uncomfortable to be in the audience and realize, ‘Well, they sound good, but something’s not right here.’”

So being authentic and letting herself enjoy the moment seems to be the way to go for Jaworski.

She says, “When we finished writing that ocean song, Andy was walking out the door and he stopped and said to me, ‘Kate, I want you to know that I’m just flying right now,’ and then he just shut the door! And I was thinking, ‘Exactly!’”

Cavalia canters into Denver

ohn Elway walks into a bar. The bartender asks, “Why the long face?” No wait. I mean, a horse walks into a bar, and the bartender asks, “What’ll you have, Mr. Elway?” Nope, that’s still not it. Let’s see. Sarah Jessica Parker walks into a bar, and the bartender says, “The usual Cosmo, Trigger?” Damn it! How about, a horse walks into a bar and says, “Ow!” Hmm? Close, but no cigar. Oh yeah, I’ve got it. A horse walks into a bar, and the bartender asks, “Why the long face?”

Excelsior!

There’s nothing like a show that truly celebrates not just horses but the age-old and vital relationship between horse and man to remind one of some awesome equine humor. (And yes, those jokes in the first paragraph are, in fact, awesome. If you don’t think so, go back and read them again. If you still don’t think they’re the height of hilarity, you can make like a banana and fuck off.)

Cavalia, which is pronounced “kuh-vahy-uh” rather than the second grade, sound-it-out pronunciation “kuh-vail-ee-uh,” is the brainchild of former Cirque du Soleil honcho Norman Latourelle. Where Cirque eschews using any animals in its productions, Latourelle created Cavalia specifically to showcase the power and beauty of, arguably, man’s true best friend, the horse.

Featuring 52 horses of 12 different breeds — Arabian, quarter horse, pure Spanish, paint, Lusitano, Appaloosa, Belgian, Comtois, Canadian, Criollo, Percheron and Warmblood — Cavalia dazzles on multiple levels. For the horsey set, just seeing the various breeds performing up close is a treat. Each animal is a marvelous example of its type. For people whose only experiences with a

horse are ones with the words “saw” or “rocking” in front of them, Cavalia offers up thrill after thrill as the acts build in pace and intensity. You don’t have to know hoof from mane to be impressed by these animals as they perform at unbelievable levels of proficiency.

ing the 52 horses on stage are 40 human performers including, as with Cirque du Soleil productions, a group of live musicians who provide the soundtrack for the evening. Acrobats tumble on, over and around their four-legged co-stars. Accomplished riders guide the horses through choreographed routines, breakneck sprints and multiple jumps. One woman even commands eight horses at once in a series of intricate formations using only verbal cues — she has no whip, no ropes and no treats to tempt the animals.

Many of Cavalia’s acts date back to Will Rogersera, Old West-style antics. Riders vault back and forth over stampeding stallions or ride two horses at once, with one foot on each. Other acts feel more Ringling Bros., like the tumbler who does flips while standing on the back of a horse running in tight circles. Then, there are the more modern variations involving horse and rider interacting with counterparts suspended by bungees from the tent top.

What Cavalia does best — and far better than an earlier iteration I saw many years ago — is incorporate all the horsemanship with more traditional Cirque-type acts. The blow off, for example, features not only dozens of horses and riders tearing up the stage but a Chinese pole, a suspended hoop and five or six other spectacles all happening simultaneously, and all of the action is orchestrated to complement rather than compete. The audience’s eyes flow effortlessly from one astounding feat to the next.

Whether you’ve ridden English or Western since before you were old enough to reach the stirrups or you think dressage is the act of making fine ladies’ garments, you’ll get a kick out of Cavalia.

The slow lane on the dating highway

ast week we looked at meeting. This week we look at mating and maintaining, otherwise known as dating.

Dating is like microwaving a meal. Enter King Soopers grocery.

Peruse the aisles for best-looking and most healthy mac-n-cheese option.

Quickly make purchase in self check-out line. Drive home. Pop meal into microwave. Shovel it in semi-attentively. Toss cardboard dish into recycle bin.

If you are more of a planner, you might have picked up a few meals while at King Soopers and stashed them in the freezer for a rainy day. But the consumption is the same — instant gratification and fleeting amusement.

Dating has not always been this way.

Dating used to be called “courtship” and implied a search for long-term partnership and/or marriage. In the early 1900s, middle-class men would show up at a woman’s doorstep armed with flowers and pre-planned poetry. These were the days when romance signified heterocentric traditions of manly strength and womanly virtue. As gender became more fluid in the 1960s, women began to challenge cultural and social inequities and the sexist structure of power. By the 1970s and 1980s, traditional gender roles lost universal acceptance. Everyone was getting an education, and marriage became more and more delayed, if done at all. Add in the evolution of electronics, and now our social climate operates on the fast-forward button, as evidenced by how we instant message, instant e-mail, instant shop, drive, eat and meet.

But how did the deliberate courtship dance decompensate into an expeditious dating game devoid of deeper intentions?

Sociologist Anthony Giddens credits society’s rising emphasis on individualism and globalization. The conundrum is that we crave intimate connections, endlessly look for love, yet we simultaneously struggle with a high-speed culture centered on self-satisfaction. Thus, intimacy and dating are simply a means to an end, where the end goal becomes self-gratification. The lack of commitment creates an easily dissolvable relationship. Hence, dating simulates the microwave meal, a transitory activity done for fun. Two people hooking up only long enough for their erotic needs to be met.

nect worldwide without being physically proximate with one another, as seen by online dating. But people may feel easily disposable, as web relationships are easy to enter and exit, and individuals can be traded in for seemingly superior profiles.

As such, dating, particularly the online version, can feel like a casual commodity.

The silver lining is that while individualism may encourage people to act in a more self-focused fashion, intimacy cannot exist without the authentic development of the self. And though globalization may make dating feel like windowshopping for love, it does provide connections across oceans. When people only interact face-to-face, sexual intimacy tends to be the focus. Online exchanges, however, encourage other types of communication, such as emotional and intellectual intimacy. This can create a more meaningful and genuine connection, especially in a climate where dating can be an informal endeavor.

But whether you date online or off, whether you are single and searching, or whether you have been tied together for the past four decades, developing deeper bonds and interacting with intention can still be accomplished in today’s climate.

The challenge is making casual connections more intimate.

Our individualized human nature often creates a strong, solid shell that is intended to prevent others from wounding our core. But when we hold love at arm’s distance, we never really love at all.

If each of us is an artichoke, the goal is to allow ourselves and another to slowly peel back the layers of those prickly, protective leaves until we arrive at the soft, juicy interior. We do this by communicating and sharing pieces of ourselves.

Yes, we can easily pop in the microwavable mac-n-cheese meal, but it takes more time and courage to create new cuisine from scratch. The end result may be a butternut squash and black bean enchilada with mango salsa. When you grow your own ingredients and combine them in creative ways, the meal melts in your mouth and is more satisfying.

So go ahead and date. But if you want deeper intimacy, be willing to shed some layers of your inner artichoke.

ver the past five years, fueled by concerns about sustainability, global warming and environmental footprints, and fed by the recent collapse in the real estate-fueled resort economy, skiers and snowboarders have started to become activists, creating a variety of nonprofits that seek to change the way that winter sports enthusiasts interact with both the environment and the surrounding resort communities.

One of these individuals is Jamie Schectman.

Schectman is the founder of the Mountain Rider’s Alliance, and he’s taking an aggressive approach to how ski resorts are operated. As Schectman says, “One ski area has decided that us riders want heated chairlifts. I would rather that money be spent on clean energy development or something else dedicated to sustainability, not my behind.”

Schectman’s vision is powerful. He wants resorts to become energy-generation centers via solar and wind installation. He wants them to be community-based, with a focus on the long-term viability of the towns that surround them, and he wants them to offer up an affordable experience for all. A pipe dream? Maybe.

But as sales for $2 million second homes dry up, and a dearth of affordable housing leads to a lack of a reliable workforce to staff the resorts, Schectman is starting to find people, including community leaders in places like Alaska and Canada, listening to him. Boulder Weekly caught up with him to ask him a few questions and find out more about his bold new vision for the mountains.

Boulder Weekly: What is the Mountain Rider’s Alliance?

Jamie Schectman: Mountain Rider’s Alliance is a group of skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts who are concerned about the environmental and economical future of the ski industry. For many of us, sliding on snow is much more than a sport, but rather a lifestyle.

BW: How did you get the idea for the MRA? JS: My wife and I have both been involved in the ski industry and had yearly season passes since the 1980s. During this time, we have increasingly felt that the general operating model was focused on a shortterm profit, instead of focusing on the local community, treating the mountain and employees with respect, and appreciating the skiers and snowboarders who love rid-

ing the mountains so much.

In our opinion, unfortunately, skiing has mostly become a rich person’s sport.

Additionally, climate change and fossil fuel dependency are real challenges that society is realizing it must face. We believe that if drastic actions are not taken, the future of our beloved pastime is in great jeopardy. We think that ski areas should co-exist with their environment, not depredate and exploit it.

We decided that instead of just complaining about the situation, we would become proactive by collaborating with others that share the same concerns and vision.

Thus, Mountain Rider’s Alliance was created.

BW: Tell us a bit more about the ski industry. What are the problems you see in how the business has evolved?

JS: Relatively speaking, the sport of skiing is a young industry. In the earlier years, the industry focused on the ski experience. I love looking at those old school ski shots of people skiing powder with big grins, wool trousers and big, straight boards. In the ’90s, ski areas began developing more non-skier-centric amenities and evolved into real estate developers. During this time, in many locations, the actual ski experience didn’t improve, except for faster chairs, more extensive snowmaking and increased mellow terrain for the second- and third-home homeowner. In fact, at many ski areas, there were more people skiing the same terrain, resulting in what I consider to be a declining overall mountain experience.

Fast forward to 2010, and the correction of resort real estate values, as well as rising operating costs (electric, insurance, etc.), have forced ski areas into having to

generate more income to pay the bills. I think Hal Clifford’s Downhill Slide: Why the Corporate Ski Industry is Bad for Skiing, Ski Towns and the Environment was not only an amazing prediction of things to come, but a must-read for every ski area executive.

Focusing on profit margins from two primary sources (skier visits and high priced real estate) is placing the industry in a dangerous position in today’s financial climate. By working together as a community, we have the power to create positive change. Like cooperatives have shown in the past with food co-ops or price-conscious access to good outdoor clothing, collaboration can provide the platform needed to create healthy ski areas. By involving the community, the riders, and clean-energy economic principles, our community of snow lovers has the chance to make a real difference.

BW: Can you talk a bit about the state of the economy and the obvious issues surrounding real estate development as an economic driver for resort communities?

JS: Well, I am no economist, but I feel that much of the current financial crisis is as a result of over-consumption, i.e. people living outside their means.

This transcended into the ski industry in the form of trophy homes and an abundance of slope-side accommodations bought on credit. Since credit is no longer readily available, interest rates have reset. And many areas have over-leveraged as resort property values have plummeted, so there is now a serious problem. We believe that many ski areas need to rethink their outdated business model, as it’s a whole new world these days. If you look at a place like Whistler, which just hosted the Olympics, they either need to expand to make more money, or downsize, which seems unlikely. The status quo isn’t working anymore.

We believe that MRA will greatly assist in the lifestyle of skiing and snowboarding succeeding because it steps back from large loans being the only source of financing. By involving clean

energy creation, offering reasonably priced shares to the global ski and snowboard community, having minimal infrastructure that will reduce operating costs, MRA is promoting a new type of sustainable ski area model. By including multiple revenue streams, involving tax deductions and grants promoting green businesses, removing typical high overheads and developing partnerships with the ski community and townships, MRA is hoping to erase the question that many in the industry are beginning to ask, “Will we even have a ski industry in 50 years?”

BW: What projects and solutions is the MRA working on right now?

JS: MRA is currently evaluating projects in Montana, Washington, Alaska and British Columbia. Criteria include being located in a reliable snow belt, having steep and exciting terrain (the ski industry doesn’t need another intermediate ski area), offering solid clean energy options and being surrounded by a community excited about the project. Each project has its own set of pros and cons that will be assessed in order to make the selection. We expect to announce which location will be the first project in December of this year, with a detailed report describing the various aspects of the proposed location.

MRA is also developing partnerships with like-minded organizations and corporations to build long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships.

BW: How do these projects address the needs of the communities they are located in?

JS: MRA believes a ski area should service the immediate and surrounding communities. MRA will work with local nonprofit organizations to better the lives of the locals. One example of practicing social responsibility is working alongside one of our partners, SkiDUCK. SkiDUCK’s name is derived from Skiing for Disabled and Underprivileged Kids. They are dedicated to enriching the lives of disabled and underprivileged children by sharing the joys of skiing and snowboarding.

MRA also believes it is crucial to involve the community in the planning process. If you look at some successful ski areas, public input was a big part of the process. We believe the foundation of a successful ski area is including the teachers, firefighters, waiters, ski bums, instructors, patrollers, etc., into the mix.

These are the people that really depend on our ski areas succeeding. They are also the people that know what is best for our mountain communities.

Besides assisting in stimulating the local economy, we will also concentrate on participating in clean-energy economic strategies, which will help the community to become more environmentally conscious and reduce our national carbon footprint.

BW: Who are some of your other partners?

JS: Besides SkiDUCK, another nonprofit we are working with is Protect Our Winters, which will be an invaluable asset for environmental awareness issues, developing community-based projects and assisting with grant writing.

Another partner is Winter Wildlands Alliance, which also believes that the snow-sports community needs to reduce our carbon footprint, especially when accessing the backcountry. They support ideas such as alternative transportation, ride share options and carpooling. As well, they have a robust climate initiative that will be implemented into the MRA business model.

BW: Are you finding a receptive audience in the ski industry for your vision?

JS: Yes, most definitely! It’s been very exciting, as we have been contacted by people from around the world. We are receiving lots of positive responses and e-mails from skiers, snowboarders and companies interested in becoming more involved. Some of the ski message board discussions have included skepticism, which is to be expected, and is appreciated. We need devil’s advocates; it helps to identify possible future flies in the ointment.

Additionally, the website is only

meant to outline the beliefs and vision, and to allow people to get an understanding of what the movement is all about. The nuts and bolts, financials and more specific details will be included in the actual business plan for each project that will be available to review before investment shares will be offered.

BW: Give us a bit of background on how you became involved in skiing.

JS: After I graduated high school in 1987, I decided to take a year off before college to go skiing. I moved to Lake Tahoe and started skiing daily at Squaw Valley. That year turned into 18 before moving to Argentina with my wife and dog to explore the Andes. From my beginnings as a lift operator to my years as an auditor and manager for one of the resort hotels, I always wondered if what we were seeing as the “ski industry” could become more values-based; a more involved and uplifting part of the community that depends on it.

BW: And you live in Argentina right now. What’s that like?

JS: It’s been a great five years. Being fully immersed in another culture has taught me many valuable life lessons. We started several international businesses here, in both Mendoza and Patagonia, and have learned the far-reaching power of the Internet. I have met some topnotch, quality people and developed some lifelong friendships. Not to mention some of the best skiing I have enjoyed is here. Argentina will always be close to my heart.

BW: Future plans?

JS: We plan to relocate back to the U.S. next month to aid in the development of Mountain Rider’s Alliance. We will initially be based out of Tahoe. This upcoming winter we will be checking out perspective project locations, initiating feasibility studies, making contacts and developing partnerships and, most importantly, skiing a lot.

A gentler Gekko

t’s a pleasure to have Gordon Gekko slithering among his lesser capitalists once again, and Michael Douglas — one of those rare movie stars who, with each film in his recent career phase, has grown more and more interesting — turns the domestication of a very famous greed monger into a source of amusement, pathos and genial duplicity.

The movie itself, just OK. But Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, director Oliver Stone’s sequel to his 1987 melodrama, has its satisfactions, thanks mainly to a cast skillful enough to finesse what is effectively two films sharing the same screen. One concerns Gekko’s comeback, after doing time for securities fraud and related crimes. The other is a romance involving a hotshot Wall Street trader played by Shia LaBeouf and his “lefty Web site” lover and fiancée, Gekko’s estranged daughter, played by the formidable British actress Carey Mulligan.

For more than two decades, Stone has professed astonishment at how the original Wall Street turned Gekko into a sleek pop culture symbol, beloved, imitated, one-upped in real life by young bucks messing with other people’s money everywhere.

How much of Bud Fox (the original’s Charlie Sheen character, who appears briefly here) do we remember from that film, really? He was little more than a narrative conduit to a seductively oily world. Gekko, thanks to Douglas’ Oscar-winning turn, ruled that world, sucking skulls (or threatening to) all the livelong day.

The mood is different, more rueful in Wall Street 2.

The script by Allan Loeb, rewritten from earlier drafts turned in by Stephen Schiff, begins in October 2001 with Gekko’s release from the pen. No one’s there to pick him up after he collects his effects, which include “one gold money clip with no money in it.”

isney’s effort to turn Kristen Bell into America’s Sweetheart reaches its tipping point with You Again, a flat romantic comedy that packages her in a funny setup and surrounds her with

funny people.

That the experiment tips over backward isn’t wholly Bell’s fault. She’s certainly more interesting to watch here than she was in When in Rome. But the laughs are few in this variation on a Mean Girls theme. And not surprisingly, most of them come from the supporting cast.

Marni (Bell) was mercilessly bullied in high school, which was the last thing a kid with acne, braces, glasses and a really bad haircut needed. Her chief tormentor was J.J., the hotheaded cheerleader played with a cruel verve by Odette Yustman. J.J. was the girl who turned Marni’s initials, MOO, into a final humiliation. “Moo” she was and “Moo” she might have remained.

But Marni has grown up to be a successful public relations professional, a vice president at age 26. But a summons home for her brother’s wedding brings back the ugly old days. Brother Will ( James Wolk) is marrying Joanna, an adorably sweet nurse the whole family adores. But Joanna used to be J.J. She can’t for the life Boulder Weekly

But he has a gleam in his eye and money-making skills in his bones. His new book, Is Greed Good? makes amends for his former rapaciousness. After a university lecture one day, Jake (LaBeouf ) introduces himself as the legendary Gekko’s future son-in-law.

Gekko strings him along, feeding Jake valuable, dangerous information regarding enemies of Jake’s mentor, the embattled scion played by Frank Langella. In return, Jake paves the way for Gekko’s reunion with his daughter. Josh Brolin is the snakelike rival investment house guru, one of Gekko’s old adversaries. In Platoon terms, Wall Street 2 presents Jake with a good father figure (Langella), a bad one (Brolin) and the inbetweener with the name like a lizard.

of her remember Marni, the “loser” she scorned — or so she says.

Marni can’t accept “Satan’s spawn as my sister-inlaw.” But before she can confess her fear and loathing to her family, Mom ( Jamie Lee Curtis) discovers her own wedding nemesis. She and Joanna’s aunt

string” organization, although when Stone gives us the establishing shot of the palatial loft filled with extras, it’s like the rebirth of journalism. Why is she hanging around with a Wall Street slicko like Jake? Because he’s an idealist who believes in alternative energy sources and the money they can generate. And he rides a motorbike. And there’s something of her own slippery father in him.

This being a Stone picture, when someone sees something on television she doesn’t like seeing, she doesn’t merely turn off the TV via remote. She throws the remote across the room. Seasoned performers such as Langella and, as Jake’s financially strapped real estate agent mother, Susan Sarandon, tear into their respective scenery-chewing stereotypes as though they haven’t eaten in days. Yet there’s an old-fashioned, slightly cheesy swagger to the picture that carries it to the two-thirds point, at which time the two competing pictures start having serious trouble being in the same frame.

Its success or failure in the marketplace, I suppose, will depend on how audiences will take this new, more “approachable” Gekko. Certainly audiences should respond to the quality of Douglas’ work. He overplays not a single moment, or look, or zinger. Douglas has been in the news lately for his battle with cancer, and that offcamera fact has a way of informing Douglas’ on-camera achievement. I wish the film hadn’t turned Gekko into such a sweetie; the script goes dangerously soft on its most valuable commodity. But a valuable commodity, in this market, can never be underestimated.

(Sigourney Weaver) also had high school issues.

Whatever that setup promises is lost in Moe Jelline’s joke-starved script. The clash of the older women has little sting, and aside from the money moment — when Marni figures out that Joanna does remember her — neither do the slings and arrows of the younger pair.

Director Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain) tries the tricks of the desperate — karaoke, food fights and star cameos by Dwayne Johnson, an unfunny Kristin Chenoweth and an Oscar winner in the finale. He even trots out America’s granny, Betty White. What’s it say about your movie when even Betty White can’t find a decent laugh?

You Again has wonderful messages about second chances — making mistakes is part of life; “how we fix them is what matters.” Those could be warm interludes if the comedy surrounding them worked.

Bell is as hapless as ever. She can be funny, as a supporting player, as a mean girl. She proved it in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. But she will never become America’s Sweetheart, even if you give her better scripts.

— Landmark Theatres Inception Blithely summarized, Inception’s plot would seem confusing and impenetrable. Confusing? No doubt, and that’s what makes the film so enjoyable, as we try to tease and puzzle out what is really going on.

Impenetrable? Hardly. Simply put, mainstream moviemaking just doesn’t get any better than Inception.

What begins as an odd and awkward encounter quickly blossoms into what appears to be a romantic late-life love affair that takes us on a heartfelt and wonderful journey which takes an unexpected turn. Father-son team launches local jerky joint

f you are like most people, you buy your jerky while strolling down the supermarket aisles or at a gas station stop on a road trip. It’s something you see at the checkout stand and buy on a hungry whim to gnaw on, but it’s never something you go out of your way to get. But one store in Boulder is making jerky the focus rather than something to toss in your cart at the last second.

Tom Henson and his son Tim are the owners of T & T Jerky Outlet in the Table Mesa Shopping Center, and to say they carry a wide variety of jerky is a bit of an understatement. The walls are lined with every type of jerky you could ever imagine, as well as a few varieties you probably hadn’t.

They carry everything from the basics (beef, turkey and hunter’s sausage) to some more unusual game (venison, buffalo and elk) to the downright exotic (alligator and kangaroo anybody?). They also carry a wide array of flavors, from their best-selling peppercorn to cherry maple and teriyaki, and, of course, the good old original.

While an entire store devoted to jerky may seem like a strange idea, Tim Henson says that there are similar stores everywhere, from Texas to Florida.

Henson says that he and his father first got the idea from a jerky store in Michigan where they used to live.

“My dad became really good friends with the owner, and he got excited and wanted to do it himself,” Henson says. “He would take some jerky and help sell it on the side at the airport where he worked.”

When Tom moved to Westminster five years ago to take a new job, he kept the idea of opening his own store in the back of his mind. Several years later, Tim moved to Broomfield to get out of Detroit and be closer to the rest of the family. When he found him-

self looking for a job, he told his dad that they should give the jerky store a try.

“I told him if he financed it, I would run the store,” says Henson, who kept up his end of the bargain and is the store’s only worker. “We thought it would be a really good investment, because there are a lot of jerky-lovers out there.”

After looking through countless locations in the area, they finally settled on Boulder and opened their shop on July 1 of this year.

“The price was right, and it seemed like a busier area,” Henson says. “There were pros and cons.

Everyone said, ‘Why Boulder?’ We took a gamble.

But not everyone here is a vegetarian. Wendy’s and McDonalds haven’t gone out of business, so there are meat-eaters out here. Being close to the college also helped. It’s brain food, and what college student doesn’t like jerky?”

While the store sells prepackaged jerky, it also has

barrels full of jerky from which customers are encouraged to fill up a bag with whatever flavors and varieties they want and pay by weight, sort of like a jerky-lover’s candy store. The barrel idea came from that first jerky store owner in Michigan, who gave them lots of advice on opening up their shop. The Hensons also use the same supplier, which is based in Michigan.

“People love to be able to mix and match,” Henson says. “With packaged stuff you are stuck with one flavor. I’ve had people come in here and get some of everything, and it didn’t break the bank.

“It’s just cheaper to buy than prepackaged jerky. The more I buy, the cheaper it is for me, so I can sell it cheaper.”

Of course, meat isn’t the only thing T & T Jerky sells. They also sell deep-fried peanuts, as well as something that sounds like it was created just for Boulder: vegetarian jerky, made from pressed and flavored soy.

“It is still Boulder,” Henson says. “I think everyone knows at least one vegetarian. I just started carrying it, but I’ve gotten good reviews from some vegetarians.”

Henson added that jerky fits right in with the Boulder lifestyle. Because most of the fat is stripped from the meat before it is dried, jerky is low in fat but high in protein. It also has a long shelf life, doesn’t need to be refrigerated and is easy to carry, which makes it the perfect snack for bike rides or hiking trips through the Boulder wilderness.

“It’s the healthiest thing for the meat-eaters out there,” Henson says. “There are a lot of jerky lovers out there because it is good for just about anything.

“Boulder was a bold choice for us. But we definitely haven’t lost money, and we’ve had a lot of repeat customers, and word of mouth is getting around.”

Dessert Diva Toasted Walnut Carrot Bread

ow that my foray into fall is in full force, autumn desserts activate!

So exciting this time of year. Every treat smells so good; yet unlike summer, nothing seems fattening, and every bite you take seems better than the next.

Word to your mama!

This week on the menu is Toasted Walnut Carrot Bread with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Spread.

Yes, the name is a tad long, but the recipe itself is easy, with great results. I always associate carrot cake with fall — the quick bread version is a tad lighter and more portable.

I make a cream cheese spread so you can use it if you want, or not. It is just as good without the cream cheese frosting. However, I find that when I make anything with carrots, people always assume frosting will be present. I don’t like to let the peeps down, so spread it is!

This recipe is made with applesauce instead of oil, so it has the healthier aspect to it, and being that I like to eat the whole loaf in one sitting, applesauce makes for happier arteries, and grating the carrots is almost like exercise, so between the two it is really slowing down my express train to chubbyville.

It has all the spices you want in your fall treats, and therefore turns your kitchen into smellapalooza. No need to light the fall candles when baking this sweet treat. Toasting the walnuts adds to the comforting aroma and gives that crunch you desire in a bread.

I love that it is more than a dessert, but great as breakfast, too.

What’s not to love about a dessert with dual roles?

So I suggest grating extra carrots and baking your heart out.

They freeze well, and once your family, friends or foes get a slice, they will be coming back in loaves, I mean droves.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Toasted Walnut Carrot Bread with Cream Cheese Spread 1 3/4 cup flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. nutmeg 2 eggs 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup shredded carrots 1 cup toasted walnuts Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Lightly grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan.

Combine flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in bowl. Set aside.

In large bowl, mix eggs and brown sugar, add in apple sauce and vanilla, stir until well combined. Fold in carrots that have been peeled and grated.

Combine flour mix with carrot mixture and stir well. Fold in walnuts, reserving a tablespoon to put on top.

Spread mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle on reserved walnuts.

Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. Take out and let cool. When ready to serve, cut into slices and spread a little cream cheese frosting on.

Cream Cheese Spread 8 ounce package cream cheese (softened) 1 tbsp. milk 1/4 cup powdered sugar (more if you prefer sweeter) 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Mix all ingredients in small bowl. It will be thick. Add more milk if thinner frosting is desired.

One standout is the special Sichuan Braised Beef noodle, a mix of melt-in-your-mouth meat and impeccably prepared pasta.
