t’s practically unanimous: Nine out of 10 establishment economists agree that America’s solid job growth and the low unemployment rate truly make ours “the land of opportunity.”

So why, they wonder aloud, is the state of labor today so morose?

Well, start with all those jobs.

Quantity is one thing, but quality is what really matters. As Jesse Jackson has pointed out, even slaves had jobs. While not in slavery, millions of Americans

today — from Walmart employees to school teachers — are paid so little that they have to patch together two or three jobs each to eke out a bare-bones living.

In fact, major corporations have made poverty pay central to their profit strategy, with giants like Amazon, McDonald’s and Walmart issuing such puny paychecks that their workers have to rely on food stamps and other public programs to make ends meet. That’s a corporate subsidy of roughly $150 billion a year taken from us taxpayers.

Miserly pay, however, is only one cause of the stunning fact that more than half of American workers now say they are looking to leave their current jobs.

The deeper issue is the overall lack of respect for workaday people.

After all, workers can see in their daily job experiences that the powers that be — from corporate chieftains to political leaders — consider employees a cost to be cut, not an asset to advance.

Working stiffs see the continued offshoring of their jobs and deliberate decimation of their rights and union bargaining power; they see leaders of both political parties go whoring for corporate dollars, while rigging the rules to gut everything from overtime pay to health care; and they see the power elite rushing to a robot economy that will leave them and their children out in the cold.

More than a “Labor Day,” America needs an all-out labor rebellion.

guest column Sessions slams the door on immigrants desperate to escape domestic violence

ecently, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan sharply criticized the government for deporting two ACLU clients — a woman and her child who had fled rape and other brutality by her husband and a gang in El Salvador — who are challenging the Trump administration’s draconian new policies applicable to the initial “credible fear” asylum screening system.

“This is pretty outrageous,” Sullivan said. “Somebody in pursuit of justice who has alleged a credible fear in her mind and is seeking justice in a United States court is just spirited away?”

Carmen (a pseudonym) and her young daughter were returned to the United States that same day after the judge threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt if they were not. But they are not alone in facing deportation while requesting protection from domestic violence. In its crackdown on immigrants at the border and in the United States, the Trump administration has endangered countless asylum seekers and immigrants pursuing justice under U.S. laws.

This summer, Sessions issued a disturbing decision that departed from decades of asylum law and especially harms women. He established a general rule against asylum for victims of domestic violence and gang brutality despite the numerous courts and other authorities that have held otherwise, and specified that those claims should be denied even in credible fear screenings. “Generally,” Sessions wrote, “claims by aliens pertaining to domestic violence or gang violence perpetrated by non-governmental actors will not qualify for asylum.”

Sessions further misconstrued the legal standards applicable to asylum and credible fear, making it much more difficult for asylum seekers to show they have a credible fear of persecution during their initial interview.

earlier are now likely to be deported, deprived of a fair chance to show they qualify for relief at the agency and through the courts.

These new policies align with other immigration changes that particularly impact vulnerable survivors of domestic violence. They follow, for example, a dramatic increase in immigration enforcement by officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection at courts across the country since 2017. These arrests have swept up victims of crime or witnesses who are appearing in family, landlord-tenant or traffic courts. A survey by the Immigrant Defense Project found that ICE arrests at courthouses in New York swelled by an astonish-

In both cases, it is believed that their abusive ex-partners filed reports that led to the women’s arrests.

The administration’s single-minded focus on arresting undocumented immigrants severely undermines law enforcement efforts to address and prevent violence. A survey of law enforcement officers released in May by the National Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project and the ACLU shows that immigration arrests in courthouses during the Trump administration have created a culture of fear that impacts community safety.

Sixty-nine percent of surveyed police officers reported that it was more difficult to investigate domestic violence

cases involving immigrants in 2017 compared with the year before.

Likewise, 82 percent of prosecutors said that since President Trump took office, domestic violence has become increasingly underreported and harder to investigate and prosecute. The survey also determined that more than half of the judges reported that court cases were interrupted due to an immigrant crime survivor’s fear of appearing in court.

The #MeToo movement vividly illustrated that far too many survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, in the face of serious retaliation, were and are silenced about their experiences.

For immigrant survivors of violence, the hurdles are that much higher as they navigate new deportation and asylum policies that concentrate on punishing — rather than defending — them.

When U.S. officials distort asylum protections to slam the door on women escaping persecution, they force victims to endure continued violence and the potential loss of their lives. When U.S. officials arrest victims of domestic violence pleading for aid at courthouses, they thwart survivors’ fundamental rights to due process and to request law enforcement assistance.

The Trump administration has sent a clear message. It values the deportation of immigrant domestic violence survivors over the laws and policies we have adopted to shield victims and their rights. Using the courts, advocacy and our own voices, we must ensure that these immigrants can secure justice before they are “spirited away” to lifethreatening danger.

UMAS remains as important as ever as it turns 50

henever the topic of civil rights is discussed, the conversation almost always revolves around relations between whites and African Americans. It is interesting that Latinos get forgotten since they are now the largest ethnic minority in the United States. They come from a wide variety of nations. Writing in National Geographic, Hector Tobar notes, “Among the major ethnic or racial identities in the United States — white, black, Asian, Native American — Latino is the most amorphous. Latino people can be African, Mesoamerican, Asian, or white. They are evangelical, Roman Catholic and Jewish.”

People of Mexican descent are the largest group of Latinos. Juan Gonzalez says in Harvest of Empire that “Not only are two of every three Latinos in the United States of Mexican origin, but only Mexicans can claim to be both early settlers on U.S. soil and the largest group of new arrivals.”

Some say, “We didn’t cross the border. The border crossed us.” That is, their families lived “here” before the Pilgrims landed in New England, before there was a United States or a Mexico.

You might not have heard of the war with Mexico from 1846 to 1848.

President James Polk believed that the United States had a “manifest destiny” to spread across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. At the end, the United States acquired about one-third of Mexico, including present day Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Colorado. Ulysses S. Grant was a general in the conflict but he would later say that the war was “one of the most unjust wars ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation.”

If you want to learn more, the University of Colorado Boulder chapter of United Mexican American Students (UMAS) is hosting a three-day series of events from Sept. 13-15 in celebration and reflection of the organization’s 50th anniversary. On Thursday, there will be a screening at Chautauqua Park of a documentary film Symbols of Resistance about the Mexican American movement from the 1970s in Colorado and Northern New Mexico. The film screening will be followed by a multigenerational panel. On Friday, there will be a photo exhibit on Mexican American history at CU’s Norlin Library. letters Nationwide prison strike Prisoners nationwide are on strike and many are fasting. This is a 19-day strike ending on Sept. 9. It is on schedule to be the largest prison strike in U.S. history, but have you even heard about it? Is it covered in the news or in our papers? This peaceful protest will include not doing their enforced labor, such as cooking, cleaning and generally maintaining the prison — as well as such dangerous jobs as fighting fires in California — for paltry wages, sometimes as low as 4 cents an hour. By speaking up for their human rights with this strike, prisoners risk the possibility of solitary confinement, extension of their prison time, loss of privileges such as phone calls or visitation, and even prison lockdowns.

What are they striking for? Their 10 demands include recognition of their humanity, a formal channel for grievances and violation of rights, more rehabilitation programs and financing of such programs statewide, the possibility of parole in all cases, an end to racial bias, reinstatement of Pell grants, a decent wage for their labor and finally, voting rights.

One in every 100 people is incarcerated in this country. This is the highest rate of any country in the world. With this strike, prisoners are taking great risks to change our dehumanizing system. Our awareness, voice and support are needed at this critical time.

ry term for Mexican Americans) and took pride in their indigenous as well as Spanish heritage.

They helped striking Carnation workers in Brighton and protested the Coors beer company’s discriminatory policies toward minorities. They were able to get a student referendum passed banning the sale of Coors beer on campus. They organized picket lines at Safeway and King Soopers to tell the public about the United Farm Workers’ grape boycott.

In February 1969, UMAS organized a caravan to Fort Lupton to visit the migrant workers’ camp. The migrants lived in one- to two-room shacks, which were arranged in two rows on either side of an open courtyard. The two-room shacks had a kitchenette and living space. There was a shower and an outhouse at each end of the open space flanked by the shacks.

Today, the chapter is known as UMAS y MEXA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan). They describe themselves as “a multifunctional organization that concentrates on political, social, educational and cultural issues surrounding underrepresented communities.” They concentrate on recruiting and retaining Chicano students and providing community services such as tutoring, tours of the CU cam-

pus, middle school and high school college experience panels, and outreach events presenting Chicano culture to the larger community.

The group has two co-leaders: Ashly Villa-Ortega, a senior majoring in international affairs and ethnic studies, and Adan Garcia, a graduate student getting his masters in education.

Garcia spent two summers as a counselor/instructor in an UMAS educational program for high school students. VillaOrtega helped organize campus protests when CU Boulder hosted a nationally televised GOP presidential debate (challenging the racist rhetoric of the candidates) and when Trump was inaugurated.

Trump is hard to avoid if you are a person of color. He claims to want to make America great again. Actually he wants to make raw racism safe again.

He and his administration have targeted Latinos with particular venom.

It’s an old con game. We white folks are told that a glorious national future awaits us if we crush the racialized others. In the 19th century, a prominent American businessman named Jay Gould said, “I can hire one half of the working class to kill the other half.”

Vote yes on 112 to protest Sand Dunes In “Too much to risk,” (Re: News, Aug. 30, 2018), Angela K. Evans highlights significant threats to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and surrounding local community from proposed oil and gas leases.

As an economics student at Colorado College back when the Great Sand Dunes was transitioning from National Monument to National Park, I modeled economic impacts of increased tourism on the San Luis Valley and studied the complex geology inherent to the integrity of the dunes formation.

In subsequent years since National Park designation, new visitors have provided an economic stimulus to local businesses in the Valley, but the benefits of tourism rely on responsible stewardship of the fragile ecosystems involved.

One important thing Colorado residents can do to protect the Great Sand Dunes, as well as other parks and water sources, is vote yes on Proposition 112 (formerly Initiative 97) this November, the ballot initiative requiring new hydraulic fracturing wells be set back 2,500 feet from schools, homes and sensitive areas like parks.

While we can’t directly control the Department of the Interior’s decisions to grant new oil and gas leases, Prop 112 offers us the opportunity to keep the air and water contamination inherent in the fracking process farther away from people and sensitive environmental areas. To help protect our economy, environment and public health, vote yes on Prop 112.

Vote Theresa Stets for community rights When the topic turns to fracking, Democrats keep turning out to be a lifeboat with holes already drilled into it. They continue to tolerate a state government with two conflicting legal mandates — protecting our health and environment while also promoting the toxic process of fracking.

For example, our Democratic Governor as well as the Democrats of the Boulder County Commissioners have always had the option of filing a federal legal action to cause the Oil and Gas industry to cease fracking until they prove it is safe, and of course all evidence points to it being unsafe. Such a federal lawsuit would be preemptive and very likely to succeed. This would have to be in federal court so that it bypasses our schizoid situation in Colorado. The Boulder Commissioners have instead concocted a lawsuit that gives us money after the damage is done. The Democrats on the Lafayette City Council similarly have had this federal lawsuit option available. It was recommended to them in candidate forums during the 2017 Lafayette Council election. Both the County Commissioners and the Lafayette City Council refuse to consider reasonable legal action that would be preemptive. Why is that?

In the midst of these sellout choices by Democrats we have a state representative race between Democrat Sonya Lewis and Independent Theresa Stets. Despite my urging, Lewis won’t step an inch beyond the sellout choices of establishment Democrats. Theresa Stets, on the other hand is promoting a community rights legal approach.

This is a new, preemptive legal strategy, which has not failed in courts where the decision was based upon the merits of the Community Rights legal argument. It should be noted that this strategy has failed where the court’s ruling strayed from the argued merits presented by the Community Rights side. I am tired of business as usual, which is taking us towards a climate disaster. I want to support a candidate who wants to align our Colorado energy policy with undeniable climate science!

For Theresa this would mean no new fossil fuel infrastructure combined with a program to transition fossil fuel workers into clean, fair employment. I am voting for Community Rights and for Theresa Stets for House District 12.

What does it really take to run for 29 hours and 18 minutes? by Emma Murray

y friend Aisha places a hand on each of my shoulders. “You got this,” she says. “You totally got this.”

We’re standing in a campground parking lot, in front of a folding TV-dinner tray table, a pyramid of snacks on top: bananas, coffee, coconut water, tortillas, almond butter, dried pineapple, chocolate-covered blueberries, potato chips, Coca-Cola, cooked vegetables, Red Bull. The thought of food makes me want to gag, so I force a bite of dry tortilla.

“OK. Four hours?”

“Four hours,” Aisha repeats back. I brush my teeth. It’s just before 6 a.m.

For the past nine or so hours, I’d been chasing the cutoff times at each aid station in the Leadville Trail 100 Run — trying to reach the food and water resupply locations (each between seven and 13 miles apart) before they closed the gates to the next section. I felt like Princess Peach trying to collect every coin before advancing to the next level, only with some type of tornado closing in on me by the second.

Now I was down to the final stretch: 12.5 miles to the finish line, right where Sixth Street and Harrison Avenue intersect in downtown Leadville, and I had just under four hours to complete it. Three-ish miles per hour doesn’t seem so horrible for a run, but I’d Boulder Weekly

already run/walked 87.5 miles over the past 26 hours. I was getting a little tired.

I swallow a second bite of tortilla and leave Aisha at the aid station with the rest of my crew — a handful of other friends and family who’d been sporadically waking up throughout the night to dry my swollen feet, refill my water bottles and make sure I was eating enough.

Altogether they operate not unlike a NASCAR pit crew.

Jordan, my fiance, follows behind me from the parking lot; it’s his turn to be my “pacer.” His job is to keep me on track to reach the finish line before 10 a.m., and also to listen as I grumble about the dull pain emanating from my shins. If I keel over, he’ll make sure I’m safe, and he carries my supplies, which at this point includes extra clothes, water and the only thing I’m capable of eating anymore, caffeinated gummies.

“OK, we’ve got four hours,” I say to him, smacking my trekking pole tips on the pavement.

“Got it.” He’s all bundled in two jackets and leggings under his shorts. Dawn, barely broken, had leveled a simmering fog over Turquoise Lake, the body of water we were about to circumnavigate. We break into an aggressive speed walk once we hit the trail again.

It wasn’t always like this, feeling like I was constantly chasing something (or being chased). At one point in the race I was a full two hours ahead of the cutoff times. But then, Hope Pass sucker-punched me on my second go-around.

•••• The Leadville Trail 100 Run is an out-and-back course, meaning you run 50 miles in one direction,

then turn around and come back the exact way you came. The finish line is exactly where you start, and the hardest section — Hope Pass — hits right before and again after the half-way mark. Per race rules, runners must do the first 50 miles alone, but once you turn to head back into town, you’re allowed one pacer at a time; for the rest of the race, they can carry the seven-ish pounds of water, food and gear you’ve been lugging on your back all day. Importantly, they also keep you company as you run overnight, where hallucinations and injury are known to peak.

When I told other runners that Leadville would be my first ultra-marathon (ever), most responded with mouths agape quickly curling into sadistic smiles.

Throughout the course, dubbed “The Race Across the Sky,” you run/walk between 9,200 and 12,600 feet above sea level the entire time, and you accumulate over 18,000 feet in elevation change (that’s only a little less than going from Everest’s base camp to its summit and back down). When you’re up that high in Colorado, the air pressure is so low, the oxygen is 30to 40-percent less abundant than if you were at the beach.

And when you’re slugging uphill, already on mile 55, oxygen is the one thing you want most.

I’d been huffing for what felt like eternity by the time my friend Kyle, my first pacer, and I plod up the final switchbacks on the backside of Hope Pass — placing down one foot, one trekking pole, one foot, one trekking pole. This was my second time moving through the section’s grassy alpine slope, this time watching the aspen grove below us shrink, not grow.

By the time we near the pass’s crest, Kyle had been with me for almost five miles, but those five miles had taken us three hours, and the sun was starting to set.

teeth chatter. I’m only wearing a long-sleeved shirt and thin windbreaker, and the alpine wind has no sympathy; I hadn’t brought more layers because I hadn’t thought it would take me so long to get back up the pass again. The first time up I’d chitchatted with other racers, pardoning my step around the wind-suckers leaning over trees, hands on knees. I’d smiled the whole way. Now, I’m scooting off trail at every switchback so they can pass me. Now, I’m trying not to hurl.

“At. Least. It’s. Downhill.

After. This.” I envision the swooshy six-mile descent that lay on the other side, the joy and freedom of downhill running.

Kyle, steadily behind me, says, “I know you feel like you’re moving like a snail, but you’re really crushing it.”

Just keep telling me that, I think. I am losing feeling in my fingers so I wrap them in my shirt sleeve and press my palms into the tops of my trekking poles, leveraging them now like canes. I stop replying to Kyle’s commentary.

The higher we get, the stronger the wind, and in the pass’s saddle I can hardly stand; the wind beats me side to side. Just a quarter-mile down the other side is an intermediary aid station, and I need to get down to warmth, to oxygen, to food. Fast.

I take my first step down the descent trail, relieved the hardest part of the race is finally over, and I nearly collapse in surprise. My left knee won’t hinge without a searing pain.

I pause, then stumble as I try stepping forward again, only awkwardly catching myself with my trekking poles.

What is going on? My leg can bear weight without issue, but the act of bending my lower leg back and forward, simply hinging at the knee, sends a shooting pain up from the back intersection of my knee and my calf.

We can see the next aid station down in the valley: dozens of people buzzing around, tents propped up sheltering food, a fire pit glowing. Behind me, Kyle says, “OK, just take it one step at a time.” If he helps me walk, I am disqualified.

“One. Step. At. A. Time.” I grunt.

At least I’m not fixated on being cold anymore. It’s just before 8 p.m.

At the aid station, I slurp a cup of warm broth and sit down on a log in front of the fire. Someone hands me a sleeping bag and when I push my feet and hands close to the flames, pins and needles bloom. Llamas, which I’m sure 12 September 6, 2018

I’m not hallucinating, are grazing or napping in the grassy slope behind me (they’d carried up all the station’s supplies earlier that morning). In the belly of a serene alpine valley, the contrasting human hustle makes me feel like I’m sitting at a camp on the Gold Rush’s Klondike trail.

Kyle breaks my daze. “Can you try eating saltines?” I take one from his palm, wary.

We continue down the rocky switchbacks after 10 minutes of rest. To mitigate the pain, I develope a breathing pattern. As my right foot hits the ground, I inhale. When I lower my left leg down, as straight as possible, I sharply exhale. The sun is long gone, and I try not to think about the upcoming river crossing that lies at the base of the mountain, being so cold already and not wanting to wade, again, through icy-cold water. What if I get hypothermia?

My plan had been to run this entire section, the swishy miles to the next aid station where Aisha and my friends and family waited. But, no, Kyle and I walk every step: down, ouch, down, ouch. I arrive at Twin Lakes, the next aid station, with less than half an hour to spare before they close the gates. It’s now 9:30 p.m. — 17-and-a-half hours after I’d started at 4 a.m. that morning.

We have at least another 12 hours to go.

Aisha sits me down in front of the TV tray table, which the crew has been carting around to every aid station. Her husband, Steve, takes off my shoes.

Jordan changes my socks. Mom, who flew in from Washington D.C. with Dad, takes my photo. Someone hands me a bowl of hot ramen. My grandma, who flew in from California, tells me I’m doing great. And I am. I’m all

smiles. Two friends who magically appear give me hugs. I eat some Fritos.

Jordan massages my calf. I down another Coke. I take my first set of ibuprofen. Within minutes I am, again, restored.

After a few more minutes, Aisha gently tells me it is time to go; I have roughly three hours to get to the next aid station before the next cut-off. Kyle and I speed-walk away, and I realize this isn’t just an overnight running mission anymore; if I want to finish, I actually have to race.

• • • • Ultra-runners talk about hallucinating, about rabbits that cheer and families that fillet fish atop mountains. It’s what happens when you deprive your brain of sleep and expend every ounce of energy. Your mind goes a little haywire.

I didn’t plan to run 100 miles this year. But in January, when I won a lottery ticket into the race and the requisite (non-refundable) $315 was automatically drawn from my bank account, I figured I had to at least try. I had eight months to prepare my body and my mind for something that I’d never had reason to think was possible: running 100 miles in fewer than 30 hours.

It wasn’t long before I learned that, even if I was the only one doing the actual running on race day, I couldn’t do it alone.

Early on in the race, I hear voices in my head. I’m not hallucinating, though; I think of them more like ghosts of my Athletic Past, each popping into my brain at an opportune moment to remind me of a lesson I’d learned, then forgotten. For a while it’s like recurring déjà vu, triggered by the familiarity of what lay before me, or the motions occurring in my body. Even if I hadn’t

been there before, I realize, actually, I had.

Around mile 14, the first voice enters my mind when the uphill section of Sugarloaf Pass hits and I shift into hiking mode up the gravelly slope. It’s my friend Sydney’s voice calling to me from the first overnight camping trip we did together, a few years back in Virginia’s Shenandoah Mountains — the first time I’d ever hiked a seriously steep hill. “Don’t straighten your knees when you go uphill,” she’d told me. “Just lift them already bent, like a unit.” I bend my knees and hinge at my hips all the way up.

A few miles later, on the flip side of the hill, my high school cross country coach’s voice rings in. I move down the trail like he taught me, like a snake zigzagging side-to-side. Takes the pressure off the knees, he’d say.

And as I grow closer to the halfway point, I think of my Grampy and his own marathon training, and how he told me he’d only ever run half the racing distance because, he believed, “I can always get back home.” Once I start back on the course toward Leadville, over the halfway point, I repeat, “Just get back home, just get back home,” like a mantra.

One of the strongest voices pops into my head at some point on the way down Hope Pass, in between my sharp and focused breaths. “It’s OK to hurt,” my friend and ultra-running mentor, Sunny Stroeer, whispers between my ears. “It will pass.”

It will pass, I tell myself. It’s OK to hurt, I repeat. These are the moments you prepared for.

That’s when I put my head down and decide I will keep moving as fast as I can until someone makes me stop. I decide the pain is temporary. I decide my willpower is my strongest asset, and what is most motivating is my desire to respect the time and energy that my friends and family have also put into this 100-mile endeavour.

There will be pain for the rest of the race, but I think instead about my best friend, Emma, waiting 15 miles ahead to switch pacing duties with Kyle, and Jordan, another 30 miles ahead, ready to see me through the finish. They’d See LEADVILLE Page 16

hen Jeanette Vizguerra entered sanctuary in a Denver church in early 2017, she thought she might have to stay for four years, the entirety of Donald Trump’s presidency. Acutely aware of how the new administration portrayed immigrants, especially those without documents like herself, she sought refuge while working on her legal case to stay with her children in the country she’s called home for the last 20 years. A few weeks later, the hate messages began. Some attacked Vizguerra personally, telling her to go back to Mexico, that she didn’t belong.

Some were physically aggressive, even going as far as threatening to bomb the church where she stayed. But the most hurtful were the messages attacking her children.

“That part was what bothered me the most because in my mind, people can talk to me and tell me things as an adult, but not to my kids,” she says.

“They called them bastards, and even one said that these kids should die.”

Vizguerra’s is just one of many stories documented in the new book American Hate: Survivors Speak Out, a collection of testimonials by people across the country who have experienced increased bigotry, discrimination and even violence since the election of Donald Trump.

“Hate is part of our country’s DNA. We have a dark and ugly history of racism, bias and bigotry in America that we routinely ignore and try to rewrite. So a book like this could and should have been written many times over again,” says editor Arjun Singh Sethi. “Nevertheless, I felt compelled to write this book in this moment in time.”

Sethi is a community activist and civil rights lawyer based in Washington D.C. He’s also Sikh American, with his own story of harassment, bullying and racial profiling, which in part led him to compile the testimo-

“There’s a lot of pain and grief across this country but survivors are rebuilding, enduring and leading by example,” he says. They are advocating for hate crime laws, suing white supremacists in court, having difficult conversations with their communities, and in some cases even working with the police.

Vizguerra for one worked with the cyberbullying officer at the Denver Police Department, and two people faced consequences for the hate messages they sent while she was in sanctuary. To this day, she still receives threats, although she does her best to expose the people behind them.

“We know that the Trump administration has woken up hate groups around the country,” Vizguerra says.

“Sometimes we have to ignore them simply so we don’t fall into their fire, but there are going to be times that we have to take action, probably legal, probably public, so that we can identify those people who are real risks to the community.”

There isn’t a one-size fits all solution to combating hate, however, Sethi says. What may work for one survivor or one community may not be the answer for another. But by sharing the stories in American Hate, stories like Vizguerra’s, Sethi hopes the country can confront its hateful past and move toward a more perfect future.

“We want to live in a world where we are not judged, as Dr. King says, on the basis of the color of our skin. We want to live in a world where our children can play freely, not live in fear that their parents are going to be taken from them by immigration authorities, or targeted by police violence or targeted by a member of the public because they don’t like the way they look. I certainly hope that future awaits us and many people are working hard to build that future,” he says. “If we do the really hard work that we haven’t done thus far, I can imagine a place where we are all free.”

For the project, he traveled the country, interviewing victims and their families, listening to not only their heartbreaking stories, but also their hope. The collection tells the stories of a Syrian refugee, a transgender man and a Jewish mother in their own words. Sikh Americans, Muslim leaders, student activists and Native Americans share their pain and their dreams of a better future. The book addresses not only overt hate crimes, like cyberbullying, arson and murder, but also what Sethi calls “state-sponsored forms of hate” from police brutality to the lack of access to health care for many in this country to the inability of the president to condemn blatant racism.

“They uniformly see that this administration has emboldened hatred and violence towards them and their communities,” Sethi says. And yet, through the process, Sethi was also struck by the survivors’ “optimism and resilience.”

My friends were ready to stay up overnight to cheer me on, not to mention how everyone had put up with months of my training schedule and its many subsequent hangry moments. I decide I can’t let them down. They’d all given so much to me over the years, and I decide, however cliché, that I want them to be part of the experience crossing the finish line just as much as I want it for myself.

Somewhere around mile 80 — when I’m amped up on Coke and my second dose of ibuprofen, pushing up Sugarloaf ’s backside in the middle of the night, my quads holding strong but my shins giving way — it becomes clear: I’m an amalgamation of my experiences. If we think of our lives like a slide show, where each slide is one experience, and you stack the slides all together, you can play life, or think of time, like a flip book.

Trudging under the inky black sky, between the ghoulish midnight aspen trees, I understand. I am the book. I am the eight months of physical and mental training. I am the 24 years of breathing. I am all the advice, all the failures, all the get-back-ups and sitback-downs. I am all that I have endured — the start and the finish. If I can take even the smallest lesson from each slide, I’ll have more than enough resources to get me through this race.

• • •• Emma takes over pacing from Kyle just after mile 70. It’s nearing 1 a.m. and it’s starting to drizzle. My sister gives me her rain jacket. At the next stop, I down another Jetboil full of ramen Aisha handed me, the ibuprofen from Steve, and I take a Coke for the road.

“You’ve got four hours ’til the next cutoff,” Steve says. “At the pace you’re going that should be alright, but you need to keep it up.”

Emma hands me an energy gu and makes me eat it. I nearly gag. We start moving again, our headlamps bobbing as we chat about the same things we’ve chatted about since high school — life, the future, adventures, aspirations, doubts — and she keeps me laughing as my blisters grow bigger. Whenever I need to pee or poop I simply pull down my pants and stick my butt over the side of the trail and let it out. No one cares; I see dozens of lady butts during

the race and can’t help but think we women have a sincere disadvantage here.

It’s just after 5 a.m. when the sky starts to lighten again. The blackness slowly dissolves to gray and fades to grayish blue. It feels momentous, like I want to drop to my knees and thank the heavens for life, for my strength, but I can’t. We only have an hour ’til the next cutoff. Emma is at my heels, reminding me my pace is on track.

I reach the last aid station shortly after dawn, where I can barely stomach tortillas and where I meet Jordan. We tackle the last leg together. At some point my watch discombobulated the distance, so we have no reference for how far or how close we are to the finish line.

All we know is we need to get there before 10 a.m. So we move, move, move, and I don’t let myself stop, ever.

I start jogging the downhills, ignoring the pain in my leg, and power walking uphill. I think I’m giving off a fierce soccer-mom-on-a-mission kind of vibe, but when I ask Jordan later to describe my gait, he says, “Um, I’d say it was more ‘determination and grit.’”

The last three miles are more or less uphill, which I don’t mind because it’s easier on the shins and joints and my muscles are still in relatively good shape. I visualize the finish line, which I can hear roaring with cheers long before I can actually see. I can’t help but smile at the surge of excitement; I’ve cultivated images of the finish line in my head hundreds of times, only this time it’s an actual experience being added to my book of being. “You got this,” Aisha’s voice rings, for real.

Aisha, Steve, Emma, Kyle, Maddie, my dad, and all my friends are waiting for me and Jordan at the street corner, a block before the finish line. They join in as we run (actually run!) the final quarter-mile, and we all cross the finish line together. In a photo my mom shares with me later, I’m smiling so wide my cheeks could pop.

The next day, my dad and I sit sideby-side in the bathroom, our feet soaking in epsom salt in the tub. I tell him how loved I feel, how supported I feel, how special the race had been because of all the people involved, not just over the 29 hours and 18 minutes it took me to run, but over the course of my entire life.

He takes my hand in his and squeezes it. “Share that love,” he tells me. “Plow it back into your community.”

More than 1.5 million people worldwide have participated in World Water Monitoring Day activities since the event was established in 2003.

he City of Boulder has had its share of issues with drinking water over the last few years.

Perhaps you read about elevated levels of chromium-6 (the contaminant discussed at length in Erin Brockovich) in a 2014 article in Boulder Weekly, or maybe you’ve seen more recent coverage of the elevated levels of haloacetic acids at Betasso Water Treatment Plant in the Daily Camera last year.

For the average citizen, it can be intimidating to read about what’s in our water. Most of us don’t have much science education beyond high school-level chemistry, so it can be difficult to understand just how much of a given chemical or compound is in our water — let alone how scientists and city officials go about monitoring those levels, and whether they’re high enough to have negative effects on our health.

That knowledge gap was the impetus for World Water Monitoring Day, which America’s Clean Water Foundation established in 2003 as a way to commemorate the 1972 enactment of the Clean Water Act. The event was originally celebrated on the law’s anniversary, Oct. 18, but has since been moved to its current date, Sept. 18.

“Turns out it gets pretty cold in October, especially up north,” explains Sean Russell, the Water Challenge Program Manager for EarthEcho International, which now sponsors the event. “It’s harder to monitor water when it’s frozen.”

To date, Russell says, more than 1.5 million citizen scientists from 146 countries have monitored their local waterways as part of World Water Monitoring Day activities, including more than 40,000 people last year. Participants have ranged from local environmental education nonprofits to school groups to families, and Russell emphasizes

City also “routinely samples nearly 100 locations in the distribution system for chlorine residual, bacteria, disinfection byproducts, lead, copper, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness.”

The City of Boulder “goes above and beyond regulatory requirements to ensure safe drinking water and monitors for potential changes in water quality,” Dunlap says, and points out that citizens can learn about the City’s findings on its drinking water quality webpage. “We are in the process of updating our drinking water website to improve and facilitate customer access to water information and data.”

In the meantime, Boulderites — or anyone, for that matter, around the globe — can sign up to volunteer on World Water Monitoring Day. Though the Sept. 18 event is a rallying cry for citizen scientists to get involved in local water quality monitoring, the EarthEcho Water Challenge and River Watch’s efforts are a year-round affair: they’ll happily take data from those monitoring their water at any time.

The publicly available water quality data collected by citizens, “may be used by local environmental education nonprofits for their own restoration efforts, or it could be used by government officials,” says Russell, who encourages citizens to look up historical data for their waterways as well.

Both organizations also provide tools for organizing your own water-monitoring group and protecting water resources.

In other words, Russell says, monitoring your local water quality is just the first step. “It’s a starting point to get people connected to these issues,” he says. “It’s that first step to learning more and taking action.”

“It’s something we’ve tried to make really accessible,” he says, adding that many families with young kids participate.

River Watch of Colorado also offers year-round volunteer water-monitoring opportunities funded in part by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and operated by Earth Force. Whether as individuals, school groups or other stake holders, the volunteer stewards monitor not only water quality but other indicators of watershed health in an effort to compile high-quality data that can be used for education efforts and to inform decision-makers about the health of Colorado’s waterways.

In addition to participating in World Water Monitoring Day, nearly 2,000 volunteers around the state collect samples each month through River Watch, monitoring heavy metals, pH, alkalinity, hardness, dissolved oxygen and temperature at designated sites. They also collect nutrient samples biannually and monitor the physical habitat of their site once a year.

That’s not to say the City of Boulder isn’t closely monitoring its water. “Overall, we conduct more than 25,000 drinking water quality tests in a year,” says Kate Dunlap, the source water quality program coordinator with the City’s public works department. The

What is CBD — and should I be using it?

F

A primer on the latest trend in athlete recovery

rom the front window of Runners High in Golden, Colorado, shoppers can see Lookout Mountain and the iconic “M” on Mount Zion. The tiny specialty retail shop is a five-minute run from the trailhead for lungbuster Nightbird Gulch. But the views and the access aren’t the only things bringing customers into the shop these days — they’re stopping by to pick up topical cannabidiol,

or CBD. “We’re selling out of it constantly,” says co-owner Deb Spence. “We were buying 10 jars at a time, but it never lasted. Now we’re going through a case of 24 jars every two weeks or so. And we’re not a big store,” she adds.

Longtime athlete and Runners High customer Kristie McNamara discovered CBD when she was sidelined for a back injury. She also happened to have a degree in organic chemistry and had started her own line of natural skincare products, Tilvee Superfood Skincare. Armed with her chemistry knowledge, McNamara started looking for solutions for her debilitating back pain.

“I searched high and low,” she says, “I was desperate.” Four years later, the solution

McNamara produced — Tilvee’s Hemp Sports Balm — is by far her best-selling product; it’s available online and at Runners High, and it’s part of a nationwide trend: Forbes reports that CBD sales are projected to reach the $3-billion threshold by 2021, and the supplement is getting attention among athletes, too.

Despite my initial reluctance, I’m one of those athletes. I’ve struggled with tightness in my IT band for years, and when nerve damage I sustained in a nasty tumble last fall derailed my 50K race training, I was ready to try anything. Amid recommendations for chiropractors, acupuncturists and physical therapists, one suggestion kept popping up: CBD. Frankly, I was hesitant to try CBD. As a freelance writer, I probably won’t have to take a drug test anytime soon, but I couldn’t imagine trying to work (or run!) while stoned. The more I heard people rave about it, though, the more interested I became.

Let’s address the elephant in the room first: like marijuana, CBD is part of the cannabis family. It’s one of doz22 September 6, 2018

ens of cannabis compounds, and it’s usually extracted from hemp — a fibrous marijuana relative that’s cultivated and used differently than its high-inducing cousin — or from the resin glands of the plant’s buds or flowers.

In topical form, CBD oil compounds are often used as an antiinflammatory agent. A recent study by HelloMD and the Brightfield Group found that 54 percent of the 2,400 users surveyed use CBD products to treat joint pain and inflammation.

Based on that information (plus plenty of anecdotal experience from friends and fellow runners), I was fairly certain topical CBD would help reduce the inflammation I was experiencing in my right IT band. Still, I needed a little convincing that I wouldn’t get an unintended high.

“That’s the first questions my clients usually ask,” laughs Jacob Corley, a therapeutic massage practitioner at Boulder-based Optimal Function and Wellness, who regularly uses CBD products in his practice. “The short answer is: nope, you can’t get high on

this stuff.”

McNamara — a mother who describes herself as “not a prude, but not ‘pro-pot’” — agrees. The longer answer, she explains to me, is that CBD binds to our bodies’ receptor sites differently than tetrahydrocannabinoil (THC), the cannabis plant’s bestknown derivative (it’s the psychoactive element). It’s like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole: by its nature, CBD simply interacts with different receptors in the human body than THC does; hence, no high.

Corley says some of his patients are long-haul truck drivers whose livelihoods are contingent on their ability to pass regular drug screens. They’re understandably worried, but he says the trace amounts of THC — less than 0.3 percent — in CBD products isn’t enough to show up in a test, especially when it’s administered topically.

These answers had me nearly convinced, but I’m reticent to use anything that isn’t FDA-approved — especially when there’s as little formal research available as there is about topical CBD. Manufacturers and practitioners of

sports medicine like McNamara and Corley are confident CBD products won’t result in failed drug tests, but there hasn’t been enough research to definitively guarantee that’s the case.

I needed to hear it from a medical professional, so I called Dr. George Sam Wang, who specializes in emergency medicine and medical toxicology at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

“There are a lot of hurdles,” he explains, adding that marijuana is a Schedule I substance, meaning that — although it’s legal for medical use in 29 states — it’s non grata, as far as the federal government is concerned.

“Despite state legalization [of medical marijuana],” he told me, “this makes research in this field difficult, due to federal and state disparities.”

This affects where you can legally purchase and use CBD, too. That 0.3-percent THC figure Corley mentioned to me is significant for CBD products: it’s the limit set forth by Section 7606 of the Agricultural Act of 2014. The “Farm Bill,” as it’s affectionately known, defines industrial-grade hemp as distinct from marijuana, and Boulder Weekly

Products derived from those legal plants, then — those that contain less than the 0.3-percent THC limit by volume — are federally legal. Still, it’s outlawed altogether in six states: West Virginia, Indiana, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska and Idaho.

If you happen to live in one of the other 44 states (and, to be sure, if you’re a Boulder County resident), you can legally possess CBD — and you won’t need to visit a dispensary to find it. CBD products are available not only at local retailers like Runners High, but also at a few well-known progressive grocery chains, like Lucky’s and Alfalfa’s. You can also purchase it online, directly from manufacturers or even via retail giants like Amazon. You’ll find pure hemp products at most health-food stores, but many don’t contain CBD — several of the experts I talked to advised me to look for the phrases “full spectrum” and “phytocannabinoid” to indicate that a product contains CBD. Armed with enough information to fuel my own small-scale CBD research, I was ready to make the plunge. I picked up a jar of Tilvee’s Hemp Sports Balm at Runners High. It retails for $44.95, so I had high hopes it would be more effective than the NSAIDs I’d been popping.

I can’t speak for anyone else’s experience, but rubbing a generous helping of topical CBD on my tight spots — which, in my case, was my entire right IT band, from glute to ankle — had a pretty immediate effect. I felt those muscles relax for the first time in months. Combined with regular use of a foam roller, diligent stretching, and occasional visits to a chiropractor and acupuncturist, I credit this stuff with helping me finish my first 50k, which I did this May, mostly pain-free.

As I’d come to realize, I’m not alone in turning to CBD (or in finding that it works). “We’re seeing a lot more distance runners — who in the past would have reached for ibuprofen — now using full-spectrum hemp products,” says Ret Taylor, CEO of Ned & Co., which manufactures natural supplements including hemp derivatives, and who is an ultrarunner himself. “This is happening both during races and long training runs and afterward, for recovery and maintenance.”

Still, Wang reminded me that CBD is similar to other non-FDA-approved supplements. “People take various supplements for a lot of different things,” he explains. “A lot of those aren’t FDA-approved for content, efficacy or safety, so whether they help or not, you’re doing it at your own risk.”

McNamara also points out that individuals react differently to CBD, and that it should be part of a complete training and pain management program. That’s Corley’s outlook, too — his clients range from 20-somethings to a client in his mid-80s, and most are comfortable with his using topical CBD during their sessions.

“He always tells me,” says Corley of his 85-year-old client, “‘If I have 20 years left on this planet, I want to make sure I can move.’”

I couldn’t agree more.

Never for money, always for love Mountain Sun celebrates 25 years with Colorado Kind Festival at Planet Bluegrass

y its second anniversary, back in 1994, the Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery already needed

a bigger space for its birthday bash — the restaurant just wasn’t big enough, so the crew headed to Boulder Theater.

And it kept going like that; Mountain Sun got more popular, opened more locations and had bigger and better parties, all the while donating to local nonprofits, supporting bands on the local music scene and helping us all get through the endlessly dark, cold days of Top: Mountain Sun February with the much co-owner Kevin beloved Stout Month.

The Colorado Kind Festival will feature bands that all credit Mountain Sun with helping them build momentum early in their careers: The Motet, The Drunken Hearts, Yonder Mountain String Band and The String Cheese Incident.

“All of the bands that are playing at the Kind Fest have played at our pubs at some point,” Daly says. “Everyone is friends and colleagues so it’s gonna be a real family union.”

Susan France That family reunion vibe is something Daly and the team at Mountain Sun have always worked to cultivate.

“From the beginning we wanted to create a pub that embodied the feeling of a parking lot at a Grateful Dead show or a bluegrass festival, that feeling you get,” Daly says. “That community of sharing and egalitarian spirit.”

The Mountain Sun crew captured that spirit immediately by making their first pub — and the four that would eventually follow — places where people were encouraged to socialize. There are no televisions on the walls, just music memorabilia and other odds and ends that Daly picked up on his travels around the world. There’s a shelf of board games for community use and good music on the speakers or playing live in front of you. Throw in a lineup of handcrafted brews and a menu full of pub grub and the Mountain Sun family of restaurants starts to feel like a good house party, replete with comfortable couches and a patio where you can catch some fresh air.

“The vibe is killer,” says Dave Watts, drummer and frontman of The Motet. “[Mountain Sun has] always embodied the Boulder spirit of positive energy.

Everyone that works there is happy to be there. The employees are enthusiastic — you can just feel it. The artwork and vibe they’ve created is consistent. There’s a Boulder Weekly

certain scene that feels like home, that feels like Colorado.”

Watts moved to Colorado in the early ’90s and came up in the music scene with The String Cheese Incident, even sharing a house with members of the band out in East Boulder. The Motet played their first show together at the Mountain Sun’s Halloween party in 1998.

“Mountain Sun was the place to play on Sunday nights,” says Watts. “I can remember coming home from those Mountain Sun gigs on Sunday nights and feeling so happy.”

A big part of the Sun’s appeal, Watts says, is its support of the local music community “on sort of a grassroots level.”

“Boulder has lost some of the midlevel venues,” Watts says. “That’s where bands get their start. But Mountain Sun has always supported that. It’s never been about the money; it’s always about supporting the local music scene.”

“The Mountain Sun is a reflection of the Colorado music scene,” says Andrew McConathy of The Drunken Hearts. “I think that’s kind of the core idea behind [the Colorado Kind Festival]. All these bands have a really special connection.”

Beyond the music, McConathy says, there’s an ethos of trust that’s hard to come by in a corporate, profit-driven world.

“They have a system where if you forgot your wallet you can leave an IOU,” McConathy says with a laugh.

“That’s pretty special. You don’t see that in many places.”

Employees love Mountain Sun as much as the customers, perhaps because of that same level of trust.

“We keep people around a long time because one of our missions was to make this place as fun to work at as it was to visit,” Daly says. “We always worked at making it a fun job where people feel empowered. At our pubs, [employees] can do what they need to do to get the job done. We have a real team system.”

2016’s This Path Tonight, his first solo studio outing since 2002’s Songs For Survivors.

Like much of his music, the songs on This Path Tonight are primarily acoustic and seamlessly blended folk and pop. Some, like “Myself At Last,” “Back Home” and “Target,” are near solo, while others, such as “This Path Tonight,” “Another Broken Heart” and “Cracks in the City,” feature judicious full-band backing that adds color to the songs without sacrificing the intimacy that characterizes the album. The closest it comes to rocking is on “Fire Down Below,” a moody mid-tempo track accented by some sharp electric guitar.

Many of the songs on the album, such as “Myself At Last,” “Fire Down Below,” and the title track, find Nash taking stock of his past, pondering the decisions he’s made and trying to figure out where his life is going. The closing song, “Encore,” puts his future into musical terms, asking “What’re you gonna do when the last show is over?”

Nash is clear about the impetus behind this latest collection of songs.

“I was married for 38 years and was not in love the last decade or so of that marriage, and realized at 75 I need to be as happy as can be for what is the

rest of my life,” he explains. “And the universe continues to smile on me, and when my marriage broke up, I fell in love with this beautiful, talented, spiritually, wonderfully educated bright woman here in New York City.

Her name is Amy Grantham and she’s a fabulous artist.”

Nash says he was introduced to Grantham, a photographer, at a Crosby, Stills and Nash concert through the personal assistant/road manager for Stephen Stills, and the attraction was immediate. The relationship, Nash says, has energized him not only personally, but creatively.

At the three-quarter century mark, Nash has no intention of slowing down.

With former Bruce Springsteen sideman Shayne Fontayne (who produced the latest album) as his creative partner for the last handful of years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is intent on looking forward — although in June he released a two-disc anthology, Over The Years..., which features some of his best known songs and more than a dozen unreleased demos and mixes.

Nash is currently on tour, playing theaters and auditoriums with Fontayne and former Crosby, Stills and Nash keyboardist/vocalist Todd Caldwell. Nash perks up when asked what fans can expect when they come to see him at an intimate space.

“The truth is, with these smaller theaters, I can see the audience. I can look in their eyes and know if I’m making a connection. It’s important,” he says. “I don’t want to be some performing puppet up there. I want to interact with the audience and let them know how I want to be there and how great this moment is tonight. I’m tired of seeing people where it’s obvious they don’t want to be there. I saw The Police on their last big tour, about five years ago, and it was obvious that they didn’t even like each other, and you can’t fool an audience, they’ll pick up on that immediately.”

t’s hardly an exaggeration to say that in his 75 years on this mortal coil, Graham Nash has lived the equivalent of multiple lifetimes. As a musician, he’s made his mark as a founding member of The Hollies, Crosby, Stills and Nash and its various permutations, in addition to having a respectable solo career.

The native of Blackpool, Lancashire, has also indulged his creative impulses via a lesserknown, but equally lauded foray into photography. All this on top of being a proudly liberal social activist who has penned songs that railed against everything from nuclear waste dumping (“Barrel of Pain”) and what happened at the 1968 Democratic National Convention (“Chicago”) to overlyaggressive defense policies (“Military Madness,” “Soldiers of Peace”) and injustices within the justice system (“Prison Song”). And given what’s currently going on in our nation’s capital, Nash is just as outspoken as ever.

“I think this administration is setting America back at least 50 years. I think they are incredibly stupid. I don’t see how you get a head of the EPA that doesn’t believe in climate change.

That’s insane. We deserve better than this,” he angrily points out. “What are we teaching our children about this?

That you can [sexually assault women] and think it’s alright and kiss them whether they like it or not? You can’t normalize this presidency. A lot of people won’t even call him president and that’s a good but small way to resist and we must resist.”

On the personal front, the last few years have been ones of change. A public falling-out with David Crosby has essentially signaled the end of Crosby, Stills and Nash reuniting, with or without Neil Young.

Nash’s 38-year marriage to Susan Sennett ended in a split in 2015, on the heels of his 2013 memoir Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life. It also spurred his return to the studio for

adding that recent research has led to a resurrection of the instrument in period instrument performances.

Carrettin introduced his own custom-built cello da spalla to BBF audiences two years ago, and has performed on it occasionally since then. Its use for this concert is part of his wide-ranging exploration of Bach’s music. “I’m way more interested in the questions than the answers,” he says. “I’ve played this suite on electric violin, modern violin, Baroque violin, modern viola, Baroque viola, and cello da spalla.”

The harpsichord that Hill will be playing was built by his brother, Keith Hill, one of the most prominent harpsichord builders today. His instruments are unique in the way that he shapes the bottom of the soundboard, the wood piece that sits below the strings and reflects the sound upwards. He shapes the bottom of the soundboard with various thicknesses that are nonsymmetrical.

This technique “creates a longer resonance” rather than the sound stopping abruptly as on most harpsichords, Carrettin says. Consequently, “his harpsichords have a more lush sound than many others.”

The new CU professor’s playing is remarkable too, he says. “To hear Robert Hill live is something I’m really excited to be able to offer our audiences. You get a resonance and clarity of counterpoint in his playing that is just phenomenal.”

In fact, Carrettin is always excited about the BBF’s programs, and this one is no exception: “Two artists, four instruments, plus wine, tapas, performances in the lobby, two great acoustic spaces,” he enthuses, ”all in one night.”

In his elaborately constructed, colorful photographs, Jason DeMarte explores the unsettling intersection between the natural world and consumer culture. KAEPERNICK ENDORSES TRUMP, SUBSEQUENT SPONTANEOUS IMPLOSION CAUSES SINKHOLE IN BETWEEN KENTUCKY AND MISSOURI; OKLAHOMA REELING This week, Nike came out with an ad that supported former NFL player Colin Kaepernick and his decision to take a knee during the national anthem before games to protest police brutality and racial injustice.

Well, this caused a bunch of people who had bought Nike products and who disagree with Kaepernick’s protest to destroy their own clothes and products.

When told about the counter-protests, Public Domain Nike owner Phil Knight is likely to have said, “That’s pretty stupid.”

But now meteorologists in the Midwest are reporting on a multi-state and Swoosh-shaped sinkhole after Kaepernick, “Just for shits” decided to publicly express his support for Donald Trump.

“If there’s one person who stands for everything that I stand for, it’s Donald Trump,” Kaepernick allegedly said in a press release. “Not only do we look alike, talk alike, care for our bodies the same way, but we also think exactly the same. Bet you didn’t know that.”

A local researcher we contacted said the news of Kaepernick supporting Trump created what’s known in the scientific community as “the old switcheroo.”

“It’s sort of like — and please, stop me if I’m being too technical here — when you drop Mentos mint into Diet Coke. The Mentos sinks deep into the body of the soda, but then it fizzes out and destroys the whole thing from inside in a magnificent foam show,” the researcher said. “When Kaepernick supported Trump, it was like a giant Mentos was dropped into the Diet Coke souls of all his deepest supporters, and the pressure was too much for them to remain.”

‘Searching’ is sad, weird, stupid

very few years, somebody gets a weird bug up their ass to make a movie that doesn’t look like a movie, from Hardcore Henry, a first-person-perspective vomit encourager, to the new flick Searching, writer/director Aneesh Chaganty’s immersive “Watch a dad misspell tumblr on his daughter’s laptop” experience. Innovation is vital, especially given the stagnant water in which cinema belligerently swims. But a format that’s relentlessly unpleasant to watch and that handcuffs the performance of all actors seems, I don’t know, bad?

Maybe it would have helped for Searching to not also sport a schlocky murder mystery so implausible that it makes USA’s The Sinner look like a meticulous documentary. Actually, everyone should be watching The Sinner this season, if only for Carrie Coon playing a rock-worshipping cult leader. I know this is a review of Searching, but I believe the old adage is, “If you can’t say something nice, talk about how rad Carrie Coon is.”

Fine.

Searching is a movie that takes place entirely on screens (mostly computers and smartphones).

After an opening that asks, “What if the first scene in Up was a Facebook commercial?”, the film FaceTimes its A missing-person mystery way into a missing persons movie. We watch as that plays out entirely on computer and smartphone David Kim ( John Cho) clicks through online screens, this gimmicky noncontacts and social media to find his missing sense is filled with implausible twists and frustrating daughter, Margot (Michelle La), with the help visuals. It’s also been tried of Detective Vick (Debra Messing). Exciting before, so it doesn’t even get points for innovation. developments happen almost entirely off-screen, as we are forced to watch a freaked out dad who uses his computer as a phone more than anyone ever has in history.

The twists in Searching are, let’s go with “ambitious.” None of them work, but kudos to Chaganty and co-writer Sev Ohanian for being unafraid to go with the kookiest possible multiple-choice answer to every question. Cho does everything he can to ground the film in some form of grieving plausibility, but it turns out that acting on, at most, half of a laptop screen doesn’t do performers any favors. It also doesn’t help that Messing turns in a performance so awkward and awful that Will & Grace is re-cancelled as retribution.

The question is: Would Searching have worked as a regular old movie and not as a gimmick-fest tickled with preposterous plot developments? No. But it may have stumbled into the kind of pulpy Dateline NBC-ish pseudo-true-crime garbage that can be satisfying in the proper doses. Instead, the twists bump against the constraints of the premise, leading a few tense moments to actually become profoundly embarrassing. I don’t think I’ve laughed as hard at an intentional beat of comedy in a theater all year as I did at one particular scene intended to be climactic and gripping here.

Experimentation is to be applauded, but this whole schtick was attempted four years ago with Nacho Vigalondo’s Open Windows. So the nicest thing I can say about Searching is that Carrie Coon is really, really great in everything she does, like her turn in Fargo last year, and that you should watch her in The Sinner.

hose words, uttered by Orson Welles at his American Film Institute lifetime achievement acceptance speech in 1975, rang true this past weekend across hockey rinks, elementary school gymnasiums and the open-air theater of Telluride, Colorado. It’s an annual tradition, going back 44 Labor Day weekends now, where the small mountain town transforms into a moviegoer’s paradise. The hockey rink becomes the Werner Herzog Theater with the best sound you’ve ever heard. The gymnasium pays homage to magician Georges Méliès. The movies in the park play under a canvas of stars so bright it almost draws your eyes from the stars on the screen.

But for the 45th festival, no star shone brighter than Welles. As Jean-Luc Godard once said, “All of us will always owe him everything;” a proclamation several filmmakers cash in on: from producer Frank Marshall to historian Joseph McBride; from documentarians Mark Cousins and Morgan Neville to Welles’ most loyal apostle, Peter Bogdanovich.

Their offerings: three documentaries and Welles’ unfinished final film, The Other Side of the Wind.

Welles started Wind — about the making of a movie — in 1970, but the production was troubled.

Money dried up fast; Welles filmed in fits and starts over the course of six years, compiling 100 hours of footage. Then, in 1985, Welles died, You can catch Orson leaving the negative and production notes scatWelles’ final mastertered across Europe. piece, as well as two documentaries about What happened next is a movie in itself. And the filmmaker, on Netfit is — in They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead, the lix Nov. 2. documentary from Neville, and A Final Cut For Orson: 40 Years in the Making, produced by Marshall — now a legend of the business. But back in 1970, he was just another acolyte trying to bring Welles’ vision to fruition.

Blissfully and, somewhat surprisingly, The Other Side of the Wind is nothing short of a masterpiece. Dense in content, melancholic in tone and downright demonic at times, Wind is a confrontational film, as funny as it is perverse. Welles must have known it was to be his last film because he put every last idea he had into it.

Like his best work, Wind demands multiple viewings, bolstered by They’ll Love Me and A Final Cut. Both docs will be released on Netflix, along with Wind on Nov. 2.

Yes, all three celebrate the “lone male genius,” but none are content to leave it at that. Wind, They’ll Love Me and, particularly, The Eyes of Orson Welles — which explores Welles’ little-seen graphic work — don’t merely take their subject warts and all. Nor do they fixate on one man’s lone Freudian fall from grace. Instead, they look to see what drives the pleasures of obsession and the follies of failure.

It’s been more than 40 years since Orson Welles made a film — and more than 30 since he drew breath — yet, cinema’s first wunderkind feels as present as he’s ever been. They always said Welles was a filmmaker ahead of his time. It looks like they were more right than they could have possibly imagined.

I

n Tuscany, there’s a regional delicacy called tonno Photos by staff del Chianti, or Chianti tuna. It’s not tuna; it’s pulled pork marinated in olive oil, resulting in a decadent, juicy, unctuous morsel of meat that resembles, well, tuna fish. There are American barbecue producers who get a similar moistness out of their pulled pork, but we hadn’t come across too many outside the Southeast until we stopped at Whitewater Wraps. What a surprise it was to find that same uber-moist, flavor-concentrated pork in the carnitas burrito. It’s shredded finely and rolled with lime rice, black beans, shredded cheese, salsa, radish and fine repollo slaw (a basic vinegar slaw). Altogether, it made for a magnificent bite, with the cheese providing bursts of rich fat and the slaw bringing pops of crunch, but wow, that carnitas. $9.

he mobile operation of Zeal serves up a rotating menu of the same types of health-conscious, vegan-friendly and delicious foods you’d expect from its brick-and-mortar shop. The truck’s recent creation of rainbow curry was a triumph of texture, color and flavor. Cabbage, carrots, turnips, sweet potato chunks, coconut and rice were mixed together, and we topped it off with the bright orange Diablo sauce. There’s bitter bites from the cabbage, sweet bites from the potato and savory bites from the carrot and turnip. The coconut melds it all together. It’s one of those vegan dishes that leaves both your taste buds and stomach satisfied. $10.

h, what joy. It is the season for brewers to turn their attention to German-style beers, Oktoberfest brews, and pumpkin ales and lagers.

Malt gets put on its rightful pedestal this time of year.

We decided to check out Prost Brewing, one of several Front Range breweries specializing in German-style beer. Its take on märzen is spectacular. It’s warm orange in color, and the nose invites a sip. Rich malt consumes the palate, and yet it finishes with a lightness that begs you to have another taste. Prost imports all its ingredients from Germany for the märzen (except the water), so drinking it might be the closest that those of us who can’t swing a trip to Munich this year will get to real Oktoberfest brew.

here are few restaurants that invoke the happy vibe that Oskar Blues’ locations do. The Longmont post is a great spot for afternoon or evening drinks, live music, lunch with the family or, in our case, a quick bowl of posole. The serving size is massive, and the bowl teems with savory chicken chunks and well-processed bits of hominy. Onions float throughout the flavorful broth, giving it a bright sweetness.

The green chile in there will get you after a while, but sip on a craft brew and you’ll be back at it in no time. Served with grilled flatbread and robust guacamole, it’s a satisfying lunch. $5.50 cup, $8 bowl.

anted: Young, energetic food, beverage and music entrepreneurs to revive a one-of-a-kind, historic Boulder County venue. The location virtually oozes rustic, mountain town charm and gorgeous scenery year-round. This cool fixer-upper has tremendous potential as a destination experience for locals and visitors alike. How many opportunities like this are available locally?

Truth is, there’s no rush. The “For Sale” sign in front of the Gold Hill Store and Pub has been hanging there for several years. According to Hugh Moore who has owned the Store for the past 22 years, many folks have inquired, but the perfect person has yet to present themselves.

It had been at least 10 years since I stopped in, but I had heard they served a decent slice of pie.

The address is 531 Main St., but it’s not hard to find since there are only two or three unpaved Boulder Weekly

Stumbling upon Gold Hill’s odd, cool General Store/Café/Pub

streets in Gold Hill.

Walk into the weather-beaten historic site and the floorboards creak like well-timed sound effects. This small, one-room space is many things: a pastry-filled kitchen counter, a bar, a gift shop with odds and ends for sale and mismatched chairs and tables.

The Store has long been a rest stop for hikers and bikers after visiting Bald Mountain, Brainard Lake or the Switzerland Trail. Tourists are fascinated by this lost-in-time, one-roomschoolhouse village of about 200 souls, while scared by the guardrail-free ascent to Gold Hill and shocked at the nonexistent cell phone service.

All things considered, the brunchlunch menu is impressive, with everything from sausage gravy and biscuits, quiche and chicken pot pie to breakfast burritos topped with chicken green chile. Most of the homey desserts, including pies and cookies, are locally baked and served with Silver Canyon Coffee and organic Bhakti Chai.

The “bar” includes one bottle of each kind of spirit with a cooler full of canned beers including Avery IPA, Upslope Craft Lager, Dale’s Pale Ale and PBR. You can sit on the front porch using their WiFi while sipping a Glenlivet on the rocks and feeling every drop of it at Gold Hill’s 8,300-foot elevation. On occasion, the store is open in the evening to host folk and other acoustic musicians. It is the only place except the nearby Gold Hill Inn for many, many miles to grab any food and drink.

For transparency’s sake, you should know there may be a few challenges in becoming the proprietor of such a place. Built in the 1890s and now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, it is badly in need of restoration and renovation and perhaps some insulation. It is heated in the winter only by an old wood-fired stove. Speaking of winter, steep Sunshine Canyon can be harrowing when it is snow-packed, impeding locals, tourists and delivery trucks alike.

Gold Hill doesn’t have city water. Most homes in Gold Hill are supplied by wells. The Store gets its City of Boulder water delivered every month, but at a price. Water is necessarily restricted for normal things like bathrooms, kitchens and dish-washing.

One more catch: At the moment, at least, food and drinks are warmed in one microwave, one item at a time.

While I’ll pass on most pumpkin spice-flavored foods (except maybe Dairy Queen’s Pumpkin Pie Blizzard with chunks of actual pumpkin pie in it), there are some seasonal local treats worth checking out like supercreamy Noosa’s caramel and apple yogurt and Helliemae’s Harvest Apple Cider Caramels (cooked-up in Wheat Ridge). According to a recent NDP Checkout analysis, 60 percent of frequent purchasers of (pumpkin-free) pumpkin spice lattes have a household income of $75,000 and above and do not have children under 18 in the house.

Unfortunately. Starbucks has added to the PSL epidemic with its Teavana Pumpkin Spice Chai Tea Latte, a trendy conglomeration that manages to insult tea, chai and lattes simultaneously.

I read about the pie at the Gold Hill Store and Pub in 2003 in the roadtrip/ memoir American Pie: Slices of Life (and Pie) from America’s Back Roads (Harper) by Pascale Le Draoulec. When I finally got there, I went with a pie that’s hard to get right: strawberry rhubarb pie. It’s often too tart, too sweet or too strawberry. This strawberry rhubarb pie was Goldilocks-right with a reasonably flaky bottom crust, a toasted crumb topping and a fruit-packed filling that didn’t hide the rhubarb.

tory time: A tried and true Boulder craft drinker peruses the shelf at his favorite liquor store. With a tongue for hops and a yen for what’s new, a bright blue can catches his eye. He reaches, and what does he find?

Boulder Beer Company’s Due East, a New England-style India pale ale.

Our drinker, born and bred in Boulder 51 years ago, is nothing if not familiar with Colorado’s first craft brewery; though, it’s been some time since he’s knocked a few Boulder brews back. And yet here he is, with a Boulder Beer back in his hand. Funny how those things happen.

New in brew: Boulder Beer Company

Colorado’s first craft brewery wants you back by Michael J. Casey If you’ve ever wondered why breweries, or any business for that matter, change and update their logo/artwork/theme every five or so years, the above should illustrate why. New sells, and new is what Boulder Beer has: packaging, that is.

Check your local liquor stores and you’ll find six Boulder Beers sporting the new art: Due East, Mojo IPA, Pulp Fusion Blood Orange IPA, Buffalo Gold golden ale, Shake Chocolate Porter and Feistbier, a helles-style lager.

Of the six, Due East and Feistbier are new to the lineup while the other four are familiar favorites. According to Boulder Beer brewmaster David Zuckerman, the recipes inside have remained the same; you’ll still be able to enjoy Buffalo Gold’s malt-forward drinkability, Mojo’s piney hops, Shake’s delectable chocolate malt and Pulp Fusion’s brunch-like citrus. For those who are hunting around for the IPA du jour, Due East offers plenty of juiciness while maintaining a firm backbone of bitterness. It may not have the cloudy haze its New England-style brothers sport, but one does not drink beer by sight alone. Due East is one of the best in Boulder Beer’s lineup, along with Feistbier, a slightly sweet helles-style lager perfect for September and October.

The rest of Boulder Beer’s standards will also be getting artwork upgrades in the coming months. Hazed, a hoppy session ale, will even get a recipe tweak when it hits shelves next month.

And if the new packaging doesn’t trip your trigger, how about a couple of new brews to try? Over at the Pub on Wilderness, Cold Hop, a British pale ale is pouring from carbon dioxide, nitro and cask taps. Considering its British roots, Cold Hop seems to play best on cask, which gives the brew a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, highlighting the maltiness of the beer — particularly on the finish, where the cereal grains shine — while maintaining a balance of bright citrusy hops.

And when Boulder Beer on Walnut switches over to Squared Pizza + Beer, Cold Hop will pair nicely with those Detroit-style pizzas. Helmed by Frank Day, Squared Pizza + Beer takes over the Walnut brewpub in September. The brewing operations will still function as Boulder Beer’s research and development, which means there is no end of new brews to try along with the classics.

Bhakti Chai’s Brook Eddy on using chai to share stories and create change

W

hen I first visited Boulder more than a decade ago, a friend of a friend invited me into her home and let me stay the weekend. I read Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha on her sunny daybed, sipping this spicy, milky, hot beverage called chai that she made on her stove. One morning, I watched my friend of a friend slowly swirl crushed clove and cardamom pods into black tea, add fresh ginger then milk, and let the mixture froth delicately in its pot. I was hoping I could take the recipe with me on my travels, but, alas, no matter how faithfully I followed the preparation, nothing I created thereafter came close to the experience of sipping homemade chai in the home of a friendly stranger, while I listened to my head-voice tell Hesse’s tale about a curious seeker age into a humble servant.

Where I failed, Brook Eddy succeeded.

Eddy, too, fell in love with chai in the homes of friendly strangers, while also hearing stories about how service can be an act of devotion — to god, to community, to your self.

Eddy was traveling around India — from metropolises like Mumbai to small villages like Kali — studying a movement of people volunteering as acts of faith. What

It’s a recipe that falls in the lineage of women. They pass down those recipes in the family. One would have mint leaf, one would have saffron, one would have cardamom or ginger.”

It was there, over hundreds of cups of tea and just as many conversations about service, that Eddy came to realize the Bhakti movement — “the idea that no matter your station in life, you have a responsibility to contribute to your community and create lasting impact in ways large and small.”

So, armed with both a message and recipes, Eddy returned to Boulder eager to share with her own local community. She tinkered with ingredients and proportions, ultimately settling on a fiery blend of chai with ginger she hand-pressed herself. It was a robust type of blend that hadn’t before graced many American tea shelves. The hope was that by selling the concentrate in farmers’ markets and cafes, she could begin to grow a product that would let her tell the stories of servitude she had heard in India, while giving people a chance to take a moment for themselves every day. That started with the name.

“I decided to name it Bhakti to make sure it was a mission-driven company. It’s not chai, it’s Bhakti Chai,” Eddy says. “It’s spicy, it’s good for you... a shot of fresh ginger. We kind of stood apart.”

As you might have guessed, Bhakti took off. In 2011 came individual servings in glass bottles made with non-dairy milk, which Eddy says she chose because she didn’t want any barriers to people trying the chai.

As the company grew, Eddy had to pull back from the production side — time constraints mandated it. No longer was she pressing ginger and brewing every batch like she had in the beginning; instead, she focused on marketing opportunities and growing the company. But it also allowed her the chance to finally put Bhakti, the movement, on a pedestal. In that sense, Bhakti Chai has transitioned from a tea company into a lifestyle brand.

“We’ve done that by with aligning our beliefs,” Eddy says. “(Our customers are) like-minded people, who want to go to India and appreciate we give back to women and girls and talk about things that brands are too shy or fearful to talk about. We came out with Barackti Chai for Obama’s inauguration, and it uses Kenyan coffee. I thought it was super funny.”

With growth comes exposure, and with exposure comes critics, particularly for a brand as bold as Bhakti. One recent article from a decently sized online publication accused Eddy of cultural appropriation — capitalizing on Indian culture as a white woman.

“I definitely took offense to that,” Eddy says. “It’s not cultural appropriation when you’re inspired by a culture. We buy our spices from India. We have relationships with people in India.

We use only organic and only fair trade. It wasn’t a recipe taken from someone.”

It was particularly frustrating for Eddy because it seemed to undercut her original goal of sharing the Bhakti movement with a Western audience. The success of Bhakti Chai has allowed Eddy to launch GITA Bhakti con(Sanskrit for “share your story”), which helps promote, centrate was fund and operate more than a dozen service missions the company’s original product around the globe, while highlighting the individual stories before expandof people of lesser means — many of whom produce the ing. products we consume in the U.S. The projects include giving access to secondary school to young women in Peru; providing clean water to families in Central America and the Caribbean; a camp for orphans and vulnerable children in Rwanda; providing a platform for women in Nigeria and the Philippines to sell hand-made bags; and many more.

That’s the ethos of Bhakti, and what Eddy has hoped to accomplish in growing her company — giving back to the communities that give to others.

Sourcing ingredients from these global communities does present some challenges for Bhakti Chai. Subtle changes in spices and tea can occur due to weather changes or handling at facilities on the other side of the globe. There are variances even during the final production stages. That requires Eddy and the Bhakti team to make sure every batch is up to standards.

“It really is an art, and it is craft-brewed, so sometimes not every batch is exactly the same,” Eddy says. “There are fluctuations with ingredients, or maybe the tea was steeped two minutes longer because someone was on their break. ...

We’ve thrown out a lot of batches.”

For those who get hooked on the unique taste of Bhakti Chai, there’s good news — Eddy says the company will continue to tinker with new creations, like a Bhakti ice cream and the recent launch of cashew milk blends.

No matter how you drink Bhakti, though, the hope is that the stories Eddy wanted to tell from the get-go linger on the tip of your tongue. Chai as storytelling. Chai as a force for good. Whether you’re in a stranger’s small kitchen in India, or in a friend of a friend’s in Boulder, Eddy hopes chai can make you stop and think about the stories outside the cup.

n the past week, more than 12,500 people (as of Sept. 4) have signed a petition urging the popular social media app Instagram to update its terms of service to allow cannabis accounts to post content without censorship. The campaign has been led by Bess Byers, a cannabis influencer who had her instagram account, @imcannabess, disabled twice in the past month.

Byers is not alone. Dozens of cannabis brands are now saying that Instagram targets their content and deactivates their accounts without warning.

Earlier this summer, cannabisrelated companies, regulators and trade groups around the world reported that they were being “shadow banned,” which means their posts on an online social community such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram became invisible to users searching for them.

Currently, Instagram does not allow accounts to promote the purchase or sale of illegal or prescription drugs, even if those drugs are regulated by the state. It does allow cannabis businesses and related entities to maintain pages, as long as they don’t violate the platform’s community standards. And even though Byers’ account, with over 90,000 followers, is up and running again, her campaign to change those standards has just begun.

The petition asks Instagram to: 1) Update its terms of use to reflect changing cannabis laws.

2) Stop targeting legal cannabis businesses and influencers.

3) Allow cannabis-related pages to promote posts and be verified.

4) Provide more transparency around its terms of use.

I’ve seen hundreds of accounts sharing the now-viral petition, and it’s cool to see this community rally together around a cause, but at the

same time, it sort of makes me cringe.

As a content creator, I get it.

Maintaining a presence on social media is an important part of my job, and I would be upset if I lost my platform without notice. However, this is where the petition started to lose me.

“It seems the only place legalization is not happening, is on Instagram.

Today, legal cannabis producers, pro-

cessors, retailers, ancillary businesses, advocates and influencers are all targeted by Instagram’s Terms of Service,” writes Byers.

Then she goes on to give some numbers: “The legal cannabis industry employs an estimated 165,000 people in the United States and Washington alone has generated $686 million in excise tax revenue since i502’s implementation. We aren’t a community of criminals.”

OK, I’m sorry, but absolutely not. Cannabis only became a billion-dollar industry where cute hipster girls like myself and Byers could be celebrated online for posing with giant bags of weed in the past few years, so I think we need to take a step back and check our privilege.

First of all, “it seems the only place legalization is not happening, is on Instagram,” is the whitest thing I’ve heard all year. Did you know that according to FBI data, in 2016, more people were arrested for weed than for murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery — combined? Cannabis possession remains one of the single-largest arrest categories in the United States: more than one in 20 arrests involved a cannabis possession charge, amounting to more than one cannabis possession arrest every minute. So technically, we are a community of criminals.

However, it’s definitely not white people on Instagram who are being tar-

geted. According to a 2016 report by the Colorado Department of Public Safety: “The decrease in the number of marijuana arrests by race is the greatest for White arrestees (51 percent) compared to Hispanics (33 percent) and African Americans (25 percent). The marijuana arrest rate for Whites and Hispanics is comparable, but the marijuana arrest rate for African Americans is almost three times that of Whites (348/100,000 for Blacks and 123/100,000 for Whites).”

Legalization did a lot of things, but one thing it didn’t do is address the racial disparities within the cannabis industry. Only 10 percent of cannabis business owners/founders identify as black or Hispanic. So the communities that have been the most devastated by the war on drugs are the least likely to profit, and that doesn’t seem to be a priority for the people at the center of this lucrative industry.

I don’t want to be negative because I know we can care about more than one thing at a time. It’s just disheartening to see so many people passionate about a petition concerning cannabis accounts on Instagram as opposed to a petition for the thousands of federal prisoners who are still incarcerated over the same plant.

However, criticizing is easy, but creating a movement is hard work. I would love to see, plan and be a part of a campaign where the white cannabis influencers of Instagram show up for the true victims of cannabis policy.

The Evil Empire strikes back, gets caught

his just in! The Evil Empire is plotting to launch a massive propaganda offensive against marijuana.

Fortunately, Dominic Holden, a journo at BuzzFeed News, has discovered the plot and exposed it.

Holden, in a fine piece of investigative reporting that deserves to be in his highlight reel, revealed that earlier this summer the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (aka the Office of the Drug Czar, aka the Evil Empire, aka the Cesspool of the Swamp) has told 14 federal agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration to send over “data demonstrating the most significant negative trends” about marijuana and the “threats” it poses to the country.

The denizens of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, perhaps knowing that they don’t have much credibility left on anything — the opioid epidemic blew up on their watch — have opted to create a front group to conduct a new war on pot: The Marijuana Policy Coordination Committee.

The Coordination Committee sent out a memo to the 14 federal agencies stating “Departments should provide ... the most significant data demonstrating negative trends, with a statement describing the implications of such trends.”

A summary of one of the committee’s meetings added: “Staff believe that if the administration is to turn the tide on increasing marijuana use there is an urgent need to message the facts about the negative impacts of marijuana use, production, and trafficking on national health, safety, and security.”

The committee followed up by sending instructions to a number of federal departments — including Defense, Education, Transportation, Veterans Affaris and the EPA — telling them to submit twopage, bulleted fact sheets that identify marijuana

threats and issues with various state legalization initiatives by Aug. 10.

The agencies were also told they should provide an example of a “story, relating to an incident or picture, that illustrates one or more of the key areas of concern related to use, production, and trafficking of marijuana.” They were also asked to describe how pot poses threats to their department and the consequences of marijuana “on national health and security.”

The committee says that its work product is to be used in briefing President Trump “on marijuana threats.”

Just guessing, but they probably are also planning to use it to campaign against legalization initiatives in Michigan, North Dakota, Missouri and Utah. Putin isn’t the only latter-day czar who likes to meddle in American elections.

The BuzzFeed News report elicited swift and tart responses from Colorado’s two U.S. senators and Democratic gubenatorial candidate Jared Polis.

Republican Senator Cory Gardner’s communications director, Alex Siciliano, issued a statement saying that Gardner expects Trump to keep his promise

to support Gardner’s bill to prevent the federal government from enforcing the anti-marijuana provisions of the Controlled Substances Act in states that have legalized recreational or medical marijuana use.

“Forty-seven states have now acted in a way that is contrary to the Controlled Substances Act and there are more initiatives on the ballot this year,” Siciliano said. “Whatever their decision, these states ought to be respected.

Regardless of the accuracy of the story, Senator Gardner remains confident in the commitment the President made to him to support a states’ rights solution to the current disconnect on marijuana law.”

Democratic Senator Michael Bennet sent a letter to James Carroll, the acting drug czar, calling out his office for collecting only negative information on marijuana.

“The only way to ‘turn the tide’ on any issue with the public is to be a credible voice,” Bennet wrote.

“By cherry-picking data to support pre-ordained and misinformed conclusions on marijuana, the Trump administration has further eroded any credibility it had on the issue.”

Polis, who has been a leading advocate of marijuana reform in Congress, charged Trump is “flailing” on marijuana policy, “sometimes saying the states should decide, while also allowing the Attorney General and other prohibition supporters in his purview to run amuck.”

“If the White House is actually spreading misinformation about marijuana to undercut states’ rights, it’s appalling but not out of the ordinary for President Trump and his gang of prohibition supporters,” he added.

Chances are Polis will be riding this horse from here to November. And if Trump doesn’t tell the acting drug czar to stop acting out, so will a lot of other Democrats.
