In 1976, Eco-Cycle volunteers led a grassroots effort to make Boulder one of the first communities in the U.S. to have a curbside recycling program. Today, working with every sector of our community, we have made Boulder County a Zero Waste model. We’re exporting this model to other communities to tackle resource depletion and the climate crisis.
“Consumption emissions,” generated from the production and disposal of our stuff and our food, account for more than 40 percent of the U.S.’s climate impact. Eco-Cycle works with communities in Boulder County and beyond to disrupt and redesign entrenched and wasteful systems so we may all live more sustainably and equitably on our one planet.

W
elcome to the 25th annual Best of Boulder™ publication. For the last quarter-century, Boulder Weekly has invited readers to vote for all their favorite restaurants, bars, gyms, schools and all the other businesses that make living here so great. While we at BW spend the year telling you, the reader, what to do around town, Best of Boulder is your chance to tell us what you think makes Boulder County the place to be. What follows are the top vote-getters, a resource for what to do and how to do it all year long. While we all spent last year coming to
terms with the scope of the pandemic, and the stress it was putting on local businesses, this year’s edition is filled with stories of hope and perseverance. By and large, the businesses that won awards this year found a way to make it through the craziness that was 2020, and now that we can see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, we’re excited for every business in Boulder County — not just the winners — to get back to normal. In the last year, we’ve seen businesses adapt, pivot, amend and improve their business models to succeed. We’ve seen the good folks in our community help those in
need. And after last year, we think it’s safe to say, now more than ever, we appreciate the local businesses that make life so full here. So use Best of Boulder as a resource the next time you’re in the mood for tacos or need a new mattress or want to set up a bank account. But be sure to check with the businesses themselves to see their hours of operation and find out any requirements to access their offerings (we’re not out of the woods yet, after all). And to all the businesses in these pages, and those that didn’t quite make the cut: Thanks for what you do, and we hope 2021 is a much better year for all of you.

loy Thai’s menu offers an array of popular Thai favorites that includes everything from meals once made for royalty to appetizers and noodle dishes often found in the carts of street vendors in the Southeast Asian nation. Aloy Thai serves everything from drunken noodles to flavor-filled curries and, of course, pad Thai. You can also get traditional soups, salads, fried rice and more. There’s a reason this restaurant is named for a derivative of the Thai word for delicious. No wonder it’s our readers’ favorite.

elieve it or not, there MCDEVITT TACO SUPPLY was a time before food CO-OWNER BRADFORD trucks. But we can hardly MCDEVITT remember such “before” times, as food trucks have become a staple in the Colorado brewery, festival and patio scene. McDevitt Taco Supply started a decade ago as a food cart on Pearl Street, then a traveling truck and now posts up permanently at Sanitas Brewing. Which means you know where to find their “Super Heady Tacos” any day of the week.

f 2020 taught us anything, it was to enjoy — really appreciate — outdoor spaces where we could still gather, imbibe, snack and talk. Good thing Boulder has the Rayback Collective, with its ample outdoor space, lawn games, full bar, fire pits and food trucks. Tucked away from busy streets, the Rayback has always been a respite from the busyness of life, but we’re pretty sure our readers appreciated it more than ever this last year.

riends and business partners Bobby Stuckey and Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson found themselves lured to Naples, Italy, time and again, savoring the acclaimed pizza of the region. Already known for their James Beard Award-winning restaurant Frasca Food & Wine, the duo began to envision something very different: a simple neighborhood pizzeria in the style of those they were inspired by in Naples. Enter Pizzeria Locale, a celebration of the lean, lightly charred Neapolitan style. No matter whether it’s a red or white sauce, vegetarian or meat-loaded, dairy- or gluten-free, Pizzeria Locale has your pizza needs covered.

raditional Vietnamese pho is served with piping hot broth, rice noodles and thin slices of rare beef (the broth cooks the beef down a bit more as you eat). At Chez Thuy you can also get it with chicken, shrimp, pork, duck or even lobster. And of course you can order veggies only as well. Regardless of what meat, or non-meat, option you choose, the measure of a good pho is in the broth, enhanced by the fresh basil, lime, bean sprouts and onions that accompany every bowl. And don’t be fooled — pho can (and should) be enjoyed any time of the year. So what are you waiting for?

The New American cuisine at Flagstaff House also boasts four-course and a la carte options, along with a world-renowned wine list and a spread of freshly spun ice creams or sorbets to pair with its other desserts (or enjoy all by themselves.) Sitting atop Flagstaff Mountain at 6,000 feet with breathtaking views, there’s no place quite like Flagstaff House to experience fine dining in Boulder County, according to our readers.

ew things in life are as satisfying as breakfast or brunch at Lucile’s Creole Cafe. First, the homey dining area (Lucile’s is literally in an old home) makes for a comfortable place to eat. ounded in 1993, AVERY TAPROOM Avery Brewing MANAGER practically came out CATE SCOTT of the gate winning awards for its beer (a Great American Beer Festival gold for Out of Bounds Stout in 1994). Surely you’ve been to the “new” brewery and taproom in Gunbarrel, but if you haven’t, go and get the full Avery experience. With a stable of classics like Colorado Kind, Annapurna Amber and Java Porter, plus rotating small-batch beers and guest taps, there’s a beer for every preference. And these are award-winning beers: Mountain Sun’s beers have won medals across the globe, including six at the Great American Beer Festival.

ith our readers’ favorite selection of both CBD and flower products, maybe it goes without saying that our readers think The Farm has the best selection at a dispensary hands down. It’s hard to argue: The Farm carries edibles, extracts, vape rigs, topicals, flower, tinctures and pre-rolls from some of the best brands in cannabis. So whether you’re looking for a sublingual oil to help with anxiety or a topical cream to ease pain or a pre-rolled joint to cap off an evening with friends, The Farm’s got you covered.

n the world of legal marijuana, concentrates are all the rage. Why? Because the effects are immediate, and the potency is high. A marijuana concentrate is a product that is nothing but trichomes — the sticky, amber, translucent hairs that contain all of the cannabinoids and terpenes that give marijuana its effects and flavor. e’re sad to say 2021 brought the passing of McGuckin cofounder Dave Hight at the age of 91. Hight joined his father-in-law Bill McGuckin in business just five years after the store opened in the city’s first shopping center. This family-owned and independent business outlasted big-box competitors like Sears and Montgomery Ward by supporting family-owned wholesalers around the state of Colorado. ing Soopers is a quintessential piece of most Colorado communities. You get to know the different stores around town, their layouts, the discounts... the staff. Sometimes you and the cashier chat about plans for the holidays, the deli manager knows exactly what kind of turkey you like, and there always seems to be an attendant in the parking lot ready to take your cart when you’ve finished loading groceries in the car. There’s comfort in the routine of going to your neighborhood King Soopers — it’s easy to take for granted. But in the face of so much tragedy this year, we know we’ll never take that comfort for granted again. ver the course of a life, you’ll accumulate some stuff. But sometimes you need a safe place to put that stuff, and our readers say Guardian Storage is the place to stash it. Guardian’s climate control units are great for delicate things, like paintings, upholstered furniture and stereo equipment. Interior units are great for big items like cars, boats, RVs and home appliances. And Guardian’s not just for personal use: With convenient, well-accessible locations across Boulder County, 24-hour security, conference rooms, free wi-fi, packagereceiving services and more, Guardian Storage can even give you a hand up in running your business.

o we all can guess what kind of cars Flatirons Subaru is known for, right? Those adventure vehicles are perfect to keep us all going in Colorado’s four seasons, in the city, in the mountains, in the high deserts and even the eastern plains. But that’s not all Flatirons Subaru has to offer. They also are committed to sustainability and since 2018 have been working to keep hard-to-recycle trash out of landfills (5 million pieces of trash to be exact) So when you go to Flatirons Subaru to find your next Subaru Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, know you’re helping out the environment too.
