Welcome Message from the Originator

Plain black letters have no faces. They cannot make eye-contact with children, or speak to them. So, as I struggled to teach phonic facts to 5 to 8 year olds, I found myself creating humanlike characters within the abstract alphabet shapes. Suddenly an interpersonal element entered into the teaching equation, attracting spontaneous involvement from the children. I discovered I had tapped into a wide range of attention-holding strategies that helped to make teaching reading more effective – and more like play in a language-rich setting. I didn’t expect it to have so much teaching power, or the global appeal it now receives from children worldwide. 6

PRODUCT REVIEW

Letterland Grammar Pack Contact: letterland.com Reviewed by: John Dabell ‘Irony is when someone writes “Your an idiot”.’ When I trained to be a teacher, only one lecturer really made an impression on me – an effortlessly intellectual English lecturer with a brilliant sense of humour. One day, using a permanent marker, he wrote that sentence on the wall behind him. He got into trouble for making a mess of the wall, but his efforts to help us understand the importance of grammar left an indelible mark on our future teaching. In education, it seems as though grammar is the new black. But really it’s never gone out of fashion because it is so fundamental to English language teaching. Learning grammar is like learning to drive; you can learn all of the theory, rules and regulations, but you won’t be good at it unless you practice, and until it starts to become second nature. The problem with grammar, though, is there are plenty of potholes, speed cameras and unexpected obstacles to navigate. This is where Letterland Grammar comes in, offering KS1 pupils resources to help them on the road to better understanding. Letterland has been publishing resources to help children learn to read and write for nearly 50 years. Its latest release is a Grammar Pack that helps young learners comprehend grammar concepts, remember them and know how and when to use them when writing. The idea behind Letterland Grammar is that words become buildings and sentences become streets with punctuation as road signs. The pack contains a teacher’s guide with resource CD, grammar copymasters, grammar posters and letter sound cards, which all together makes a neat package of grammar goodies. Thankfully, Letterland Grammar is not just about learning the ‘rules’ of grammar, something that’s sure to make hearts sink and the learning fizz go flat. No, this resource is more about finding ways that learners can make their writing more interesting and exciting. It’s a child-friendly collection of activities and ideas designed for use in large class settings, although it could be adapted for smaller groups or 1:1 work.

The units Th it and d chapters cov cover over an iimpressive range of topics, from capital letters and full stops to present progressive and past tense. There is a quick key in the teacher’s guide with the some great analogies (all centred around streets, buildings and bridges) which form an important part of the programme. Each of the units is made up of lessons with objectives, resources, key terminology, tricks, an activity outline and examples, notes, further practice and next steps. The unit notes are very clearly written and have been thought through with obvious care and attention to detail, meaning children get to relate concepts, connect the analogies and recap previous learning. There are plenty of supporting resources that feed into the lessons, including examples to print out or project, 173 flashcards, photocopiable ‘I can do’ certificates, a free image bank for making your own grammar wall displays and songs too. There is also a collection of A2 posters featuring all the key concepts. This resource works, and it works hard. Its analogies cleverly help children on their grammar journey with plenty of pointers and travel tips to learn along the way. It focuses on a range of topics, which can be used either as stepping stones or as discrete or open-ended task tasks. There is so mu much scope for usi using the resources fle flexibly, and

children can b be challe challenged h ll d and d extended with ease. nic, Teaching grammar is no picnic, y, whether at primary or secondary, but it can be creative and fun without the migraine-inducing focus on rules. Children using this resource are more likely to acquire a very healthy education in rammar sentence building by learning grammar in context, in steps, playing with parts of xercising speech and punctuation and exercising both sides of the brain.

Verdict: Punctual arrival

Letterland Grammar helps children at Key Stage 1 learn how language works and how parts of speech create meaning. It teaches them that they have choices about how they write and speak, and it will make significant contributions in helping them become confident speakers, readers and writers. Grammatical terminology is best explained through real examples in sentences and texts, which is where Letterland excels. It promotes discussion and critical conversations, offers models for pupils to play with and helps them become reflective readers and writers. The whole Letterland Grammar pack is £79, and for that you are getting the highway code, driver’s license and rapid roadside recovery. All Letterland needs to do now is produce Key Stage 2 grammar activities and everyone in primary school will be happy.

Introduces grammatical concepts in KS1

Grammar Teacher’s Guide

Letterland Grammar introduces the grammatical concepts in Key Stage 1. The emphasis is on bringing these concepts to life so children can understand them, remember them, and use them in their own writing. Letterland Grammar is an interesting world to explore, where words become buildings and sentences become streets. The punctuation we see is road signs on those streets, indicating what is happening. As a child is reading, all they have to do is think of their little finger as a car going along a street looking out for signs along the way! A4. 116 pages. Includes CD. Key terminology Conjunction; joining word; clause

Activity outline

Notes

Introduce the analogy. People like to live together. Houses, or little avenues, like to be joined together to form communities. We need a way of joining those little groups of houses together. A little bridge would do the trick! There are words that act as little bridges. These words are called ‘conjunctions’. Use the ‘conjunction - and’ flashcard to help children visualise it from the GRCD.

Introduce the word clause here to describe a group of words, if appropriate. However, ‘group of words’ works just as well, as long as children understand that these don’t make a complete sentence.

Discuss the Examples 2.1. Look at the words and clauses standing alone. They need to be joined with other words and phrases to become full sentences. Demonstrate how and can make a difference by joining appropriate examples together. Show how the words or clauses work better together as they create a full sentence. Ask children to do the same with other examples. Working in small groups or pairs, they could come up with other sentences using and, then feed back to the rest of the class.

Children must also add the appropriate capital letters and punctuation.

and

Additional notes Practice and extension activities Next steps

Grammar Resource CD includes:

You can also refer to and as a ‘joining word’ if that is easier for children to grasp than ‘conjunction’ at this stage.

As you are creating full sentences, use this as an opportunity to recap on children’s learning about full stops and capital letters.

Further practice • Use Letterland Grammar Copymasters 2.1 to practise joining clauses using and to create sentences. • If appropriate, ask children to complete their own sentences, with and as the conjunction. • Encourage children to look out for where and is used as a conjunction when they are reading.

Next steps When a child feels confident in using and as a conjunction, they can progress to using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions (Unit 2.2). Unit 2: Writing sentences

As well as the Letterland ELT series, Letterland publishes a comprehensive programme for ESL children called Fix-it Phonics. So what is the difference between the two programmes? Letterland ELT is simply a starter-level course for introducing the alphabet and some basic oral language. Fix-it Phonics is an all-inclusive, step-by-step programme. It has four structured levels that help children to quickly master all the English letter shapes and sounds as well as reading, writing and communication skills.

ELT or Fix-it Phonics?

Age 2 - 7+

How does Fix-it Phonics differ from your non-ESL programmes? In Fix-it Phonics, the tried and tested Letterland principles have been specially adapted to help children learning English develop language and vocabulary. Sounds and shapes are taught with all you need to consolidate learning in one place. Less teacher preparation time is needed as children work sequentially through the books with audio guidance and regular listening checks. Vocabulary is introduced gradually and the introduction of the phonic concepts is systematic, so learning English is fun and easy to remember. Simplified language

Topics

Speaking & listening

Just 3-5 key words are taught for every sound. Stories are simplified to aid comprehension.

Topics such as colours/ numbers/shapes are integrated into the programme and role-play forms part of those lessons to encourage oral communication.

Audio CDs are an essential resource for delivering the lessons in the Letterland Fixit Phonics course. Pupils hear correct pronunciation models and follow the clear, friendly instructions throughout.
