DESIGN BRIEF Project type: mixed-use workplace serviced-apartment research & development retail GFA: 291,000 m 2 Status: ACTIVE Location: City of Guangzhou, Guandong Province, China This project is located in the city of Guangzhou, in the new area of development science and technology. One of the most prominent features of the site is that most of it is located on a hill. The hill creates a elevation change

of about 20-25 meters from the street level to the top of the hill. This makes the design very challenging, but also brings a fantastic opportunity to create a unique proposal.

Yearly solar radiation exposure with the application of bris-soleil.
Because the climate in south of China is mostly humid and warm, and after doing climate analysis, we decided that natural ventilation is not really an option for this location so we decided to

focus mostly on solar radiation studies. What we found interesting that because of the high sun in this latitude, the eastern sides of the buildings will benefit the most from horizontal
EXCAVATION louvers and not vertical fins. To accommodate the program, including a large number of parking spaces (approx.. 2000), we spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how minimize the disturbance to the existing hill. We
placed all the building on the perimeter. Below are the diagrams that we used to illustrate to the client the cut-and-fill operations, on one of the three phases of construction.

In the concept behind this scheme we were looking to create links to the site’s unique topography. In order to accommodate all of the client’s retail and parking re-
quirements, almost half of this hill needs to be excavated. We were looking for a way to create the memory of the hill in using continuous shapes that emerged.

The city of Hangzhou is famous for its beautiful West Lake and rolling hillsides. Genshan West road is a very prominent site with great commercial visibility and connectivity to Zhejiang University to the south.

Beautiful riverside parks and lakes are all within easy walking distance to our development. The team envisioned to create a commercially viable development in harmony with the surrounding context and neighborhood.

DESIGN STRATEGY This project is in city of Hangzhou and is part of a large residential development that is located across the street on the south side of the site. The original program of this part of the development consisted of an office building, a serviced apartment building, a
hotel, and retail. Client wanted to keep all the parts of the program apart from each other so they could sell each building separately to different operators. The hotel was later dropped from the program due to some municipal restrictions.

After site planning was confirmed by the client, the client became attached to the idea of somehow integrating the idea of distinct luxury into the appearance of the project. One of our project architects proposed the idea of diamonds. Originally the client loved the diagrid, but eventually they wanted to have a more integrated facade. I wanted to

see if the rhombus could become more of an expression of the object underneath, rather than just an application or a screen. In Asian cultures it is not considered auspicious to have an “X” sign on the facade, but when “X” became merely the shape of space between the objects on the facade, client jumped on the idea and asked us to
develop further. Next few months we worked on trying to figure out how the rhombus shaped window-wall system could allow flexible tenants spaces, allow for operable windows as well as
for installation of VRF air-conditioning system on the exterior. The government also limits the use of glass to 50% of the exterior wall.

NANJING FINANCIAL CITY

Structure on Exterior.
Status: INACTIVE Location: City of Nanjing Jiangsu Province, China Concept: design director at the time, after a visit to Nanjing, was inspired by Yuhua stone. A very beautiful and distinct type of stone, particular to Nanjing area. Yuhua stone is embedded into the culture, history and spirit of Nanjing. For the main tower, the

premise was a series of oval shapes stacked on top of each other. The segmented and stacked nature of the design is inspired by the ancient Chinese towers. As we started sketching, I was looking for a way to stay close to the original idea, while exploring
concept in a more contemporary direction. The higher the building the more structure it requires, affecting the quality of spaces and the amount of available space at the lower levels of tower. As it has been done in many other tall tower projects, the
structure can be set on the exterior perimeter of the building, becoming part of the exterior envelope. This approach can offer savings in terms of construction materials and also in terms of the leasing space at the lower levels.

This project is located in the Southern part of China, in the city of Xiamen. In the program, client asked for an office building, a SOHO apartment building as well

as a commercial retail space. The simple massing of the of the office tower as well as the SOHO apartment were designed per the requirement of the client.
The client asked for a simple shape that could be easily constructed and later sold to different tenants.

The retail was placed along the edge of the site to create a courtyard public space that could be used by the shoppers as well as the members of the community. The opening on the west side, between the office tower and the retail was a way to bring metro users to the site and use it as a pedestrian corridor connecting to other areas of CBD.

21  Retail Strategy
The original contract asked the design team to create references to a dragon in our overall design. Although dragon is an imaginary creature, we tried to find refences to the dragon in other things that designers could relate to. Skins of dragons are usually covered in scales and we took it as a simple way to adress the concept. We experimented with the idea of continuous surface that wraped the massing.

The density of facade is a response to the government requirement of glass-to-solid ratio to be maximum of 50%.

Through use of wood on the facade on the retail we wanted to try to bring human scale back to the large scale building surrounding the courtyard. The stepped massing of the retail, created space for rooftop amenities such as pool and gym for the residents of the SOHO, as well as a green area for the office occupants to enjoy.

A Business Strategy: Each tower has the same efficient office floorplate. Tower heights increase towards the Class-A Office at the major road intersection.
27  Design Strategies
A Unique Experience: The retail podium defines a series of plazas that range from a public square, to intimate courtyards, to secured drop-offs.
Urban Context: Office towers are shifted in response to the urban green belt. As a result, each tower has an open passage through the site to the park.
Program Requirements: The design brief calls for 3 office towers with a retail podium. The future underground metro line 17 passes through southwest side of the plot, while the north of the site needs a substation placed somewhere along the edge.
Retail Courtyard
The podium creates two semipublic plazas that open up to the adjacent park. These courtyards condense social activity and complement the retail experience. Together with the public square and park, a series of experiences woven through the site will attract tenants while providing great outdoor spaces and amenities for the office workers. One of the things the team wanted to avoid was creating space that
would get fenced out, making an urban island where office workers would simply drive in and out of the property through a gate. We strongly encouraged the client to preserve the south-east corner as a public square. The organic retail scheme was a study that looked at how we could playfully respond to the park, while creating interesting spaces, with lots of potential to roof-top restaurants and public areas.

The process of designing an 780m super high-rise is complex - especially when situated in the context of Suzhou in Jiangsu, China. Suzhou is famed

in Chinese history as a nexus of the silk trade and as a water town of canals and bridges.
In the early concept study models of the Suzhou super-tall tower, we were looking to create a transitioning link between the a very tall shape and a very small podium. We experimented with the idea of smaller stepping volumes as a way to
approach this. Inspired by the Guggenheim museum in New York, I looked at another quick study where the ground plane spirals into the sky, creating an urban park, that intertwines with the program.

MAGNOLIA PROJECT P
DESIGN BRIEF Project type: mixed-use workplace serviced-apartment hotel retail GFA: 310,000 m 2 Status: ACTIVE Location: Bangkok, Thailand This is a mixed-use project in Thailand, where the Gensler office strongly collaborated with a local design firm. The development area was being purchased by the Magnolia Quality Development Corporation and it consists of residential, workplace, community

mall, public area, Magnolia headquarters, Whizdom recreation club, and sport club for Magnolia. The site is located along Sukhumvit, east of the CBD area of Bangkok in an area that is experiencing rapid development growth for both commercial and residential uses.
The site is aggregated from 3 parcels of varying sizes with the total area of 68,956m2. Maximum FAR of 5 is achievable which allows for maximum programmable area of 344,780m 2 including parking. The three sites are currently in use although certain areas of the sites are disused and have fallen into disrepair. All three sites have occupants with current leases none of which expire concurrently. This will require phasing, and may not all be part of any initial purchase.

The site is located in a predominantly low rise residential area although some high rise residential development has recently been completed to the north east of the site. The predominant adjacent areas are of three-four storey residential housing. The site is accessed from the main east west

Sukhumvit highway, the sites themselves have no address from Sukhumvit as the entire western boundary is lined with 3-4 storey shop houses and only two vehicular access points of the highway afford access to sites A & B to the south and sites D & C to the north.
The complex zoning laws of Bangkok created an interesting challenge for both local and international design teams on this masterplan project. With FAR 5, we tried to create plots that would create maximum open space while staying close to the target program area requirements. In the final plan, the residential was placed away from the main road, in a park setting with the front of the site reserved mainly for the multi-level retail, office, and entertainment program.

This project is located in the southern, and one of greenest cities in China - Zhuhai. As part of the larger master plan, the city government mandates most of the new development to be pedestrian

friendly with lots of public spaces. One of the major requirements for this retail center is that all of its commercial spaces need to be under ground. The only exceptions were the entrances.

In this proposal we were looking at how to create a link between the two large parks on opposite sides of the site. One park is located on the sea side, the other is on the mountain side. We looked at how to bring playfulness of nature into the proposal while also

maintaining a viable retail infrastructure. Creating a variety of open spaces that transform the idea of an underground mall into a pleasant shopping experience with links to public transportation, community spaces, performance spaces, etc.
The design team was looking to establish a place of civic importance: a gateway into Zhuhai’s city district. We explored ideas for a place of public gathering, aiming to create a development consistent with and framed under an overall city masterplan. We considered a strategy into Phase II and beyond, as well a strategy as an independent site. We focused on creating a flexible and successful retail program with a flexibility for expansion into future phases.One of our goals was to establish a model development and hence an identity for Zhuhai’s commitment to sustainability.

A high-end residential villa designed in collaboration with Michael Rotondi of RoTo Architects. This private residence is part of a large resort was designed to be a place of meditation and serenity. One of the concepts for the design was the idea of duality. The ground level of the house was placed SCHEME 1

The main house is split in two down the middle making it easy for its occupants to be able to find peace even during a noisy reception. The canyon that is created as a result, adds a unique feature to the house, marking the entrance to the two houses.

HALF-LIFE OF THE THIRD SKIN
DESIGN BRIEF Project type: community residential GFA: 15000 m 2 Status: ACTIVE Location: Pripyat, Chernobyl, Ukraine
The project site is located in the abandoned city of Prepyat, found on the path of the radioactive fallout from the nuclear disaster that occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Station in April of 1986. This young city was evacuated few days

after the disaster as the levels of radiation became extremely dangerous. This nature of the environment plays a major role for the location of this project. The extreme hostility of the environment makes it unlivable for humans.
In the last sixty years, Nuclear Power Production has increased substantially as has the research and knowledge base from experience, now is the time to begin an Integrated Nuclear Research Think Tank to further the knowledge on the consequences of nuclear disasters. The events after the earthquake in Japan, make this proposal even more relevant.
With time, lower levels of radiation will allow to inhabit the ground.

PRIVATE HOUSE “M”
DESIGN BRIEF Project type: residential GFA: 120 m 2 Status: ACTIVE Location: West Hollywood, California, U.S.A. The challenge of this project was to design a private residence on a very narrow lot in West Hollywood. We approached this design trying to lift the main house functions to the second level, trying to save land

for the garden and parking. The bedrooms were placed along the main stair that also functioned as a library and a multi-purpose space.
By lifting the main building above the ground floor, and opening it up to the sky, we also brought the building out of the narrow canyon that is being created by the two neighboring structures. The dynamic form was the result of a series of iterative design studies. We have built a large set of sectional positive and negative models and looked for attributes that would benefit our design goals.

This project is driven by the idea of path as well as the use of our bodies to measure the spacial qualities of a place. It is the goal of this exploration to study the experiential nature of a pathway and how different spacial qualities along the path influence the person who occupies it. What is mostly important

to me in this project is how people experience the space. The form is important but it constantly in flux to accommodate the above. I think that the spacial experiences, just like music and art, will trigger thoughts and emotions, provide comfort and provoke.
At the site scale, the site experiences are deeply connected to the natural flows of the site. The pathways relate to low and high spots. They cross the topography creating steep climbs while in other places, the paths climb slowly, at a small angle to the slope. Abundant growth on the site allows to use trees as a way to play with space and create a variety of spacial
transitions. Trees surround some buildings to isolate them, while the expose the others to welcome visitors. At the building scale, spacial experiences are emphasized in sections. A building’s entrance narrow, in attempt to pull the visitor in. The elongated properties of most buildings pull people through emphasizing movement, but also the tempo-
