Named in honour of architect and WWI soldier, Lieutenant General Sir Joseph John Talbot HOBBS. During WW1 he served in the Middle East and Gallipoli. Hobbs was a humane commander who cared deeply for the welfare of his men, often commuting prison sentances handed down by field officers.
Named after WWI and WWII soldier, Brigadier General Alfred Joseph BESSELL-Browne. Born in Auckland he attended Perth High School, enlisting in the Perth Artillery Volunteers. In 1914 he was appointed to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and given command of the 8th Field Artillery Battery.
When he retired from the army in 1927 he took an interest in the erection of memorials, he designed the Western Australian War Memorial at Kings Park.
He served in Egypt and at Gallipoli, for which he was made a Companion of St Michael and St George and mentioned in dispatches.
RYRIE AVENUE
BIRDWOOD AVENUE
Named after WWI Major General, William Granville de Laune RYRIE. In 1914 he was appointed commander of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and posted to Egypt. He attacked and captured Gaza, fought near Beersheba and took part in the capture of Jerusalem. In 1918, he took command of the ANZAC Mounted Division.
Named in honour of WWI Field Marshal Lord BIRDWOOD affectionately known as ‘Birdy’. He became the first leader of the ANZAC’s and was promoted to full General in 1917. Like many other senior officers at Gallipoli, he was scornful of danger and once made a point of not relocating his headquarters to safer ground, despite being under fire. He was a frequent visitor to the front line.

Barramundi with horseradish
and lemon mayonnaise

¼ cup yoghurt ¼ cup good quality mayonnaise 2 tblsp horseradish 1 lemon, zest and juice 2 tblsp dill, chopped
Fish
750g barramundi 1¼ cups flour 1 egg yolk 1 stubbie of beer Vegetable oil for deep frying Dill pickle to serve
Combine yoghurt, mayonnaise, horseradish, zest, juice and dill in a bowl and set aside. Heat your deep trying to 180C. Cut fish into finger-sized pieces and toss in quarter cup of the flour. Whisk egg yolk and beer together until well combined. Sift remaining flour into the egg mixture and whisk to a smooth batter. Dip floured fish into batter and allow excess to drip away. Deep fry in batches until golden brown. Serve with dill pickle and mayonnaise.
