What a difference a year makes.... I reflect on what real estate stock levels we had last year compared to now. We had approximately 18000 properties for sale this time last year – almost more than in the midst of the global financial crisis. Needless to say this wasn’t widely reported at the time, especially when equilibrium is approximately 12000. We were 50% oversupplied in the last year, the good news is that property stock levels have been selling faster than being listed. Currently there are 13990 houses, units and blocks for sale. We are back to sensible levels again, still a little oversupplied but the good news is that a well priced property sells quickly. The success story is the $400,000 $800,000 price range, with strong demand from first home buyers and trade up buyers. Many tenants are moving from rental accommodation to their first home as a result of high rents, affordable interest rates and confidence of job prospects in WA.

Launch of the Prominent Agents Network May sees the launch of the Prominent Agents Network with Alan Bourke as the founding Chairman. The group has started with 13 Member Agencies contributing to share ideas, improve service levels and to become the new benchmark in real estate. After the fantastic feedback from our first issue I am delighted to be signing off on Issue 2. Sicilian Pasta “Don’t be afraid when you see anchovies on the list of ingredients, by the time this has cooked, you won’t even know they were there, but they do provide a fullness of flavour.”

Serves 4 ½ cup good brand of EVOO 6 – 8 garlic cloves (fine sliced) 1 – 2 red chillies chopped, or 1 tspn crushed chilli 10 – 12 anchovy fillets 2 Tbspn (heaped) of baby capers 6 medium tomatoes diced Salt & freshly ground pepper Sliced Kalamato olives (optional)

Boil 400 grams fettucini/spaghetti according to directions. Prepare the sauce while pasta’s cooking. When cooked ‘al dente’ drain (reserve approx ½ cup of starchy liquid and add to the sauce), add to the main sauce pan and toss. Serve with shaved Parmesan cheese, rocket salad, garlic bread. Generous splash of olive oil in bottom of large skillet, gently fry the sliced garlic til golden (don’t burn or it’ll be bitter), add the chilli and anchovies and ‘melt’ the anchovies by crushing with back of wooden spoon. Add the tomatoes and cook for a couple of mins, until softening. Check the seasoning, add the capers, olives and rough chopped parsley, then add the reserved liquid from pasta (a Tbspn at a time) til you’re happy with the consistency. Add the cooked pasta, toss in the sauce, add crumbled fetta for that extra creaminess.

TABLET TRUTHS Critics were initially unsure about tablets prior to the iPad, however Apple has produced a ‘game changer’ which continues to break sales records. Although it was initially seen as somewhat of a toy, the iPad is now making significant inroads into the government, education and business markets. So apart from email and browsing the web, what does the iPad offer business users? Firstly, the iPad can be a very effective tool for taking notes while in meetings, as it’s much less obtrusive than a laptop and only takes a second to start up. The application we use the most is Evernote, which is free for the base version. It’s available for the iPad, iPhone, Android and PC. Evernote’s best feature; it will synchronise your notes to your PC making the chore of managing meeting notes much less painful.

Another instance where the iPad is proving its worth to business users is in managing what documents to take to a meeting. Most people print out a few copies for everyone just in case. An alternative is to have a set of documents ready on the tablet which can easily be referred to. Sugar Sync is an application that will allow you to synchronise files from your PC to your tablet or even phone. The file browser on the iPad is good enough for reference to documents. Again the base version is free. There are some applications in the pipeline that are designed for particular businesses. For example for Real Estate where, during an inspection, the property manager can take photos and notes while onsite. Tablets are definitely here to stay and are becoming the tool of choice for more and more businesses due to their ease of use, low purchase price and world of inexpensive ‘apps’ to drive business productivity.
