by Linda Wright In my years as a real estate agent I have helped countless people in the process of downsizing and understand the very particular emotions experienced during this period. “Even the term downsizing sounds a negative word! I prefer the term “free-upping” – freeing up time, (often) freeing up money and having the opportunity to enjoy a different lifestyle”. It is never easy to leave a home you love, filled with years of happy memories and momentous family occasions. I promise you though, there will be time when you will drive past your old house and smile - rather like remembering an old love - it will always have a special place in your heart, but you will be very glad you moved on.

Sometimes what people feel they will miss most is their garden. Put some of your favourite plants in pots and arrange to take them with you. You can still enjoy them! Smaller low maintenance outdoor areas can be cosy and pretty as a picture.

Start talking about it, share your desire to move with those closest to you. It makes it real. Downsizing does not mean downgrading. Ask your friends, family and agent to help you find a house you are delighted with. Start to sort your belongings as soon as possible, it always takes longer than you think. Divide everything into ‘Give, Save, Sell’, it’s easier to let go of an item if it is going to a good home. Hire a handyman and cleaner to help. The cost can be well worth the stress and time you save. Leave before you have to. Don’t wait until you might be struggling physically or financially. Be positive! You are moving onwards, not downwards!

Zucchini Slice Jess is a huge fan of simple, easy to make, tasty food. She handles Bourkes reception with the same simple approach to good service and customer care for everyone. Ingredients 2 zucchini, grated 1 large onion finely chopped 3 rashers bacon finely chopped 1 cup tasty cheese grated 1 cup self-raising flour ½ cup of oil 5 eggs salt/pepper Handful grated cheese Salt and pepper to taste

Method Preheat oven to 170°C. Grease and line a non-stick lamington tin. Combine zucchini, onion, bacon, flour and cheese in a large bowl. Add oil and lightly beaten eggs, and mix. Season with a little salt and pepper. Pour into lamington tin. Bake for 35-40 mins until golden and set. Allow to cool slightly before cutting. Note: the vegetables can be substituted or added to – try corn kernels, grated carrot, shallots, shredded beans, and leave out the bacon for a vegetarian version.
