S E T A R B E L E C E G E L L BOURNVILLE CO N IO T A C U D E IN S R A E 100 Y 2013 is the year when Bournville College is celebrating its centenary anniversary – 100 years since it was set up. First established by Sir George Cadbury in 1913 (then known as Bournville Day Continuation School), the function of the school was to provide young people with a sound general education which initially included English, Maths and physical education.

Over the hundred years, we have seen a lot of changes and exciting developments. In terms of our campus, we saw our first relocation in 1973 to a site on Bristol Road South in Northfield. Then in 2011, we relocated once again to a purpose build £66 million state-of-the-art campus in Longbridge.

Our offer of courses has expanded from general English, Maths and PE to a wide variety of qualifications including A Levels, BTECs, NVQs and apprenticeships in many different subject areas such as art & design, media, music, sport, business, hairdressing, beauty therapy, catering to name just a few.

CHARLOTTE’S CAREER DRIVEN FORWARD THANKS TO APPRENTICESHIP Charlotte Blunn has become the first winner of the Bournville’s new initiative ‘Apprentice of the Month’ through the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration with Trans-logic UK Ltd. Trans-logic UK Ltd is a vehicles solutions provider that works with businesses of all sizes across the UK to help them reduce the cost of their fleet operation and increase fleet productivity, specialising in helping companies that operate vehicles that are not core to their business.

As well as offering vehicle solutions, Trans-logic UK Ltd also offer a number of other services including livery, light fitting, locks, as well as boats and aeroplanes throughout Europe.

Charlotte, 23 from Monkspath started with Trans-logic UK on the Apprenticeship in Level 2 Business Administration in 2011 and has now progressed onto the Level 3. Charlotte came across the apprenticeship scheme due to wanting a change in career in administration, realising that her previously chosen career choice wasn’t for her.

‘I really enjoy the apprenticeship scheme and after completing the Level 2 I knew that I wanted to progress

onto the Level 3. I am happy that I decided to change career as I’ve enjoyed learning something different. I also receive regular contact from the assessors at Bournville College and would recommend to others to look for an apprenticeship.’

Bournville College have been working with Trans-logic UK Ltd since 2011, when the organisation first employed Charlotte on the Level 2 programme. Although initially looking for a short term solution, the organisation has been impressed with the work ethic from Charlotte and the apprenticeship scheme in support with Bournville College.

Steve Nicholson, Director of Trans-logic UK Ltd commented: ‘I originally looked into the apprenticeship scheme for a light administration role to help with the workload in the short term. However, Charlotte has taken to everything and has been a huge help as we look to grow our business.’

‘The apprenticeship scheme has been brilliant for our business – Charlotte has come on leaps and bounds and fitted in well with the team. She is constantly improving, her confidence has come on during her time here and she has been a calming effect on the team. I would certainly recommend the apprenticeship scheme to other employers,’ concluded Steve.

JAMES MARTIN JUDGES A COMPETITION HELD AT BOURNVILLE COLLEGE Bournville College recently held a regional heat of the Red Tractor beef and lamb Make it with Mince Challenge in its commercial restaurant of Urban Flavours. Competition judged by the celebrity TV chef James Martin saw six pupils from the region prepare a dish of their choice made from beef or lamb and fight for the place in the final.

The Red Tractor beef and lamb Make it with Mince Challenge is a cookery competition for 11-16 year-olds who are passionate about food or pursuing a career in the catering industry.

The Challenge was developed by Red Tractor beef and lamb to engage, educate and inspire young people to get hands-on cooking experience.

Entrants were asked to submit their own original, nutritious and creative

recipes using beef or lamb mince, together with a photograph of the finished dish. They also supplied a cooking method, time plan and cost breakdown within a strict budget of under £10.

Speaking about the event James Martin said: “It is now more important than ever before to inspire young people to cook properly and the Make it with Mince Challenge is a perfect platform for them to learn about food, cooking and nutrition. I hope that the competition will encourage more young people from the local area to get cooking and try out new and different recipes.”

Jo O’Connell, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality and Catering at Bournville College commented: “We are delighted with the opportunity

to be able to host this prestigious competition at our new campus, showcase our fantastic facilities to James Martin and the Make it with Mince Challenge organisers as well as champion the talent of our own students.”

Bournville College’s catering and hospitality facilities include several training kitchens equipped with industry standard equipment, commercial restaurant Urban Flavours open to public to use, computers and text books for theory and assignment work and expert tutors, giving students a chance to learn in a realistic working environment whilst being supported and guided through their studies.

S T N E D U T S E G E BOURNVILLE COLL Students and staff from Bournville College had a unique opportunity to mix with royalty, when Princess Anne visited the College’s stand at the Skills Show.

Her Royal Highness was full of compliments for the activities that the College had put on, especially praising the Batak – a co-ordination game, which attracted over a thousand visitors during the three days.

It was a great honour meeting the Princess, she had visited our college in the past, but this is the first time I met her. The students were really pleased that she took the time to stop and chat, it gave them a real buzz. e said.

The Skills Show is the UK’s biggest skills and careers event and over 200 students at Bournville College enjoyed being part of it.

Theatrical make-up and hairdressing students showcased a head-turning Lion Transformation, whilst painting and decorating students demonstrated how to wallpaper a room.

Visitors also had an opportunity to join a couple of chefs from Bournville College in an attempt to make the longest pasta in Birmingham – reaching 13 meters on the last day of the show. The chefs also demonstrated how to make fresh pasta using a variety of unusual ingredients, including chocolate. Catering students supported competition entrants in the Confectionery area, acting as commis chefs and gaining valuable industry experience.

Hundreds of visitors walked away from the Bournville stand with their photos, taken by our dedicated art and design students.

Several tutors from the College inspired many young people with spotlight sessions on their careers in fields ranging from law and marketing to mechanics and hairdressing.

The College also ran a ‘Have a Go’ session on how to design your own iPhone app, which was a big attraction.

Meanwhile, Paris Scarlett joined students from other colleges and Dragons’ Den star, Theo Paphitis, on stage to present a combined cheque of £7,220 to Children In Need.
